from

thepublishers I may live to regret my decision to let the kids binge watch Pee-wee’s Playhouse DVDs as I lay out this issue, but for now, I’ll think about my vegetable garden. It’s not that I’m wishing winter to end, but if we’re not going to get snowed in, build snow men and make snow cream, I might as well start flipping through these seed catalogs that have started to arrive. I still would very much love to see some significant accumulation, but I’m afraid I may have jinxed it by scoring some used snowshoes a few months back. So I’ve got my mechanical pencil out and my grid paper and Peyton slithers into the office, ditching her stuffed animals once she sees the seed catalog. She’s been wanting to plant strawberries but her eyes widen when they land on the bright fuchsia balls on page 40. “What are those?” “They’re radishes,” I tell her. I don’t tell her I can’t stand the things though I apparently used to eat them as a tot. “We can plant radishes if you want.” “We must grow some more vegetables,” she told me. “What else would you like to plant?” “Dinosaur carrots. We need green dinosaur carrots.”

Peyton’s ready to plant that garden.

Green carrots. They don’t have them in this catalog. But if I imagine myself as my four year-old girl, the carrots must be green for the dinosaurs because the orange ones were for Santa’s reindeer. Makes perfect sense. Off she went with my catalog and a crayon to help me plan our plot. I’m not sure Adam even noticed his sister trample through his Legos as she settled into to the couch. And then inspiration struck. Looming protectively over my perfectly planted rows will be a scarecrow sporting a grey suit and red bow tie. Because there’s nothing scarier than Pee-wee Herman. Enjoy! FEBRUARY 2015

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

For the love of small businesses If mid-February has been designated the time we humans revive romance, I’d like to aim a cupid’s arrow somewhere untraditional. The closing doors of Stone Soup, a beloved bookshop/restaurant, together with the Valley Green Gallery in Nellysford is what prompts me to write in support not of the romantic human bond that traditionally gathers its share of cards, chocolates and hot house roses, but instead of local businesses and small wine producers. At Basic Necessities, when asked over the years if we wanted to expand or franchise, we’ve always said a polite “no.” We feared expansion would diminish the charming, quirky or, as one journalist recently put it “corky” atmosphere. Customers tell us that the small shops are what help keep them human. Amazon may be convenient and cheap, but Amazon is a monster who gobbles up smaller in the food chain. Similarly wine may be cheaper and easier to buy on-line, but do we want a world made up only of internet automation? Do we

Upland Hunting In The Blue Ridge

want to see the Walmartization of the world, a world of identical albeit cheap chains? Do we want a world devoid of small mom and pop shops, the kind of place where staff knows your name, as well as your taste in wine and books? A world with no Basic Necessities or Stedman House? Some families may of necessity need to shop at Walmart or its internet equivalent. Do you? Ask yourself if you can really afford to see your local shops disappear. Supporting the small farmer in your area helps guide the world away from factory farming, which is responsible for some of the world’s most large-scale animal suffering. The big chains and their ilk make it impossible for small shops to survive without your support. And while the big chains may offer wines for less money, they don’t carry the Elena Pantelionis, Ariana Occhipintis, Eric Bonnets and Anne & Frederic Grassets of the world. These are the humans I want to support. These are the small wine producers who grow their vines not only with great passion, but also with great love. Show that you care, and

Come warm up with one of our

that money doesn’t have to rule, but rather integrity and yes, “Bing,” feel that cupid’s arrow?... love. Château de Segriès, Côtes du Rhône, 2012 – It’d be hard to find a better Rhône for the price, and harder still to come up with two kinder or more generous winemakers than Château de Segriès’s Anne and Frederic Grasset, who have opened their home to me many times. Their wines reflect their humble hard work and passion. Notes of blackberry jam mix with soft cinnamon aromas to make this the perfect wine for a wide range of foods. Medium-bodied and smooth. $12 Montescondo, Chianti Classico, 2011 (biodynamic and unfiltered) – Typical of many Italian reds, Chianti Classico offers a blend of both sweet and bitter flavors. It’s the same sort of contradictory nature that makes many-dimensional people interesting. A blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino, this Chianti has beautiful balance with very fine tannins and, true to biodynamic farming, no herbicides or pesticides used. Looks for sweet cherries tempered by espresso and cedar notes. $29.99

Blue Ridge LIFE

FEBRUARY 2015

I met Jerry Fretwell last spring when I dropped by his shop in Staunton with a rattling, Cremona double bass. We shared stories about the Bluegrass scene, and I learned he used to jam with my grandfather, Kenneth Taylor. I hadn’t made an appointment, but Jerry gave me a lesson in bass repair. With surgical precision, he reset the sound post inside the bass. Then he attacked the fingerboard with a hand planer, and I shuddered as shavings fell to the work bench. But within an hour, the fingerboard was perfectly arched, smooth, and stained with a new finish. He finished by placing the bridge with fresh strings. No more rattle.

Every time I return to Fretwell Bass, I get lost in a forest of banjos, cellos, contrabasses, dulcimers, guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, and violins - a Virginia string player’s Mecca. But Jerry’s signature can be found penciled under bass bridges all over the world. Since opening his shop in 2008, he has become a go-to luthier for beginners and touring professionals. And like the most striking notes, it was accidental. Jerry began as a bass collector, but after retiring from Valley Building Supply in 2006, he and his wife, Mary Jane, began buying, selling, trading, and repairing instruments out of their home in Fishersville. continued on page 14

They needed to expand, and after two years they moved the basses to West Beverley Street in Downtown Staunton. The shop is now lined with about thirty American-made Engelhardt and Kay basses, spanning from the 1930s to current models. The Fretwells also have four aluminum basses made in the 1930s on display. Quite a find, considering The Aluminum Company of America built just 500. Jerry laughed, “They belong to my wife. They’re not for sale.” Mary Jane runs a tight ship at Fretwell Bass. She manages the books, and she’ll greet you with a smile at the front desk under a canopy of Eastman jazz guitars. Sissy Hutchins is the “ukulele expert,” and she manages the website at fretwellbass.com. Rod “Chip” Jaeger repairs and refrets guitars. Jerry is the bass man. I remember FEBRUARY 2015

“Yours truly” playing with the Hackensaw Boys at Veritas Vineyard & Winery with the Cremona double bass brought back to life by Staunton-based luthier, Jerry Fretwell.

talking with him back in the summer about careers and such. As I lamented the idea of a day job, he said, “I love my work. I get to spend everyday with these basses.” But after work, he may be found jammin’ in the valley with The Last Minute Band. I called him from a show in Falls Church back in October. After a rough soundcheck with my old Cremona, I realized I needed one of his basses. Jerry said, “Don’t worry, we’ll make it right.” I didn’t get to his shop until two weeks later. As he worked with another customer, I tried every bass in the store, some more than once. I wanted an old Kay. But a new, merlot-stained Engelhardt caught my ear. The action was perfect, and the tone had a kick drum punch. When Jerry was ready to help, he sent me right back to that bass. “You don’t need an old bass. You just need a bass that sounds good.” He lifted it from the rack - “This one will last the rest of your life.” As he played, I listened for a quick lesson in Rockabilly slap. I bought the bass, and for weeks my fingers smelled of fresh stain. My friend and fellow musician, Bobby Campbell, commented after a recent show, “That Jerry Fretwell sure knows how to set up a bass.” As the smell wears off and the wood ages, the tone will just get sweeter. 2014 year end residential real estate summary for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

In 2014 the Nelson County residential real estate market put in a valiant effort to rebound from the sluggish first and second quarter sales. Even though sales in the second half of the year were up by 24%, the slow first half of the year resulted in an overall decrease in sales of 17% from 2013 to 2014. When emerging from a decade long real estate recession, any positive milestones are worth noting; improvements were made in average price and days on market. Here is a market summary for Nelson County. Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Countywide Overview; 190 residential properties sold in 2014 which represents a 17% decrease from 2013 when 230 properties sold. (Keep in mind that the benchmark was high since sales had increased by 27% in the previous year.) Statistical Comparisons; Q1-

Q4 2013 recap: 230 sales, median $245,950, average price $267,153, Average price per sq ft $140.42, Days on Market (DOM) 187. Q1-Q4 2014: 190 sales, median $238,875, average price $278,216, Average price per sq ft $142.28, Days on Market (DOM) 169. While the number of sales and median decreased, the average price and average price per sq ft increased (marginally) with fewer days on market. There is also a little less inventory competing for buyers at basically the same asking price per sq ft; 318 residential properties are currently on the market at $166.81 per sq ft compared to 328 at this time last year at $166.27 per sq ft. With many more homes for sale than there are buyers, it is important to note that the properties selling are the ones that are priced appropriately for the market conditions. Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 92 sales at an average price per sq

ft of $155.92, Stoney Creek (valley) with 21 sales at an average price per sq ft of $135.18, and all other nonresort or county properties with 77 sales and an average price per sq ft of $128.45. When comparing 2014 sales with 2013 sales, all 3 markets saw a reduction in sales; the most impacted area was Stoney Creek with 30% fewer sales, followed by Wintergreen with 18.6% less. The county fared the best with a decline in sales of only 11.5%, but an increase in price per sq ft of 8%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 92 properties sold representing 36 detached homes and 56 attached/condos. Hence, 61% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the county locality with the most sales was Afton with 19 sales representing 25% of the county/nonresort sales. Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; Monthly Sales: January-13,

Sarah Shelton and Maria Morgan-Cooke were just acquaintances when they began working together in 2006 at Nellysford eatery Basic Necessities. But the duo became fast friends and now they’re taking their relationship to the next step — business partners — in their new venture, The Hungry Fox, “What brought us together was our love of cooking,” said Maria, who was the Thursday night cook at Basic’s,who along with Sarah, has catered events at Pharsalia and sells baked goods at the Nelson Farmers’ Market. The Hungry Fox has been cooking out of a borrowed kitchen for a while, but they’re finally ready to open the doors of their “Fox Den.” The cute little farm house in Tyro has been refitted to suit their baking needs and, as Sarah’s husband says, it gives off the feeling that your “grandmother’s inside baking cookies” — a perfect fit for the gourmetto-go wholesale bakery and dessert catering business. They hope that the Fox Den will one day be home to full-service catering, but for now Sarah and Maria are starting off with their mutual love of desserts. “I fell in love with pastry,” said Sarah, who worked at the Boar’s Head Inn in the pastry department after leaving Basic Necessities. “I really, really enjoy cake decorating and beautiful pastries. Right now I’m having fun making gluten free stuff: gluten free lava cakes, tortes. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!” Beverly Lacey, who owned Basic Necessities when Sarah and Maria worked there together, said she is pleased but not surprised that the duo has come together to bring great-tasting, beautiful desserts to the community.

“I think both of them, the thing they have going for them, is their energy, their creative abilities. They’re good cooks and they’re dependable, thoughtful people,” she said. “They’re both being very creative in doing vegan desserts and gluten free and things that are not necessarily available elsewhere.” Neither Maria nor Sarah are afraid to get elbow deep in flour and sugar, but both say they’re looking forward to learning from one another. “Maria’s done catering a little bit more professionally and hopefully I’ll be able to pick up some things from her,” said Sarah. And Maria (who can’t wait to delve into the packaging and the visual aspects of the business) said she looks to Sarah for managerial experience. “We kind of divide and conquer,” said Maria. Starting a business revolving around the creation of food is a dream come true for both Sarah and Maria, but the real benefit may be to local restaurants and foodies. “My big goal is really trying to get on the menu locally,” said Sarah, noting that her Virginia Apple Pie (one of Maria’s faves) is already on the menu at Basic Necessities. Basic is also serving as a pick-up location for Hungry Fox orders. Sarah said she wants to make what people want - they’re trying out a lot of great gluten free, vegan, and allergy friendly recipes. “I’m just super excited to put a beautiful product out that a restaurant will feel good about plating.” The fact that Sarah and Maria are both local and well-known in the community is something that Beverly says will set them apart from the Costcos of the restaurant world. “I think especially for smaller restaurants, they need to have something that separates them from the run of the mill,” she said. “This is how we keep a community together — by supporting each other.” BRL

ADVERTORIAL

A Good Estate Plan Once upon a time, where you grew up was where you would plan to live for most of your life. These days, moving around the country — or even the world — is easy enough that most young people dream of leaving home to get out on their own at least for a few years. But just because they want to test the waters outside of the Blue Ridge, doesn’t mean they don’t love where they come from. “Nelson has been home to my family on both sides all the way back in my family tree for 10 generations or something,” said Katie Wood, who plans to travel to Venice, Italy soon for an artist residency position. “A couple hundred years my folks have been living around here. And as I continue to change, part of my identity that I draw from being here and this being my home is going to continue to change with me, but I wanted a way to connect with it that felt permanent.” And what’s more permanent than a tattoo? Katie’s tattoo is about the size of four quarters on her foot. The outline of her home county helps remind her where she comes from. “My feet are the first things coming out of the ground when I’m standing up and it’s important to me and I love to show it off and I think it’s really interesting and exciting and beautiful that I get to share this mark of my heritage,” she said. Katie’s friends Sami Cunningham and Danyelle Phillips also have Nelson County tattoos — each of theirs is on an arm and about 3 inches square. Both left home for college but wanted a way to stay connected to Nelson while they were gone – and for the rest of their lives. “For me, it’s just a way to have home close to me even if I’m not there,” said Danyelle. “Currently I’m in Nelson for a while, but I can foresee in the future I won’t be permanently.” Sami is quick to say she doesn’t believe that tattoos must be meaningful (they can just be an aesthetic way to decorate your body), but that hers is definitely meaningful to her. “I have lived in Nelson [County] since I was five years old and it’s one of the most beautiful places to live in the world and I really think, and my whole life I’ve felt very blessed to live here,” said Sami, who wants to work in advocacy. She said she went to college far away from home to give herself something new and put herself in uncomfortable situations. “I went [to college out of town to] get out, but I was still incredibly proud of being from Nelson. The friendliness and the genuine respect that Nelson County folks share with each other is really beautiful. I wanted to have this tattoo because I was about to graduate and the idea of graduating without marking myself with where I’ve come from ... I just couldn’t have done it without a bit of Nelson County with me.” Katie said she knows a lot of people with Nelson tattoos, but that she and her friends didn’t go together to get inked or get them done as part of a pact or anything like that. “I think it says something about us but also about Nelson County as a place,” she said. “It’s so inspiring and beautiful that people feel the drive to commemorate their identities as Nelsonians by getting permanent marks on their bodies that tell people where they’re from.” BRL

Did you know that everyone has an estate plan? Even those who do nothing to plan for their death still have an estate plan. Every state, including Virginia, has a “built-in” estate plan for you if you have done nothing to plan for yourself. These are called the laws of intestacy. Unfortunately, many people will choose to do nothing, leaving their loved ones in a mess and confusion. It is important to understand that a good estate plan actually begins by addressing potential issues that could arise during life and then gives clear direction to your loved ones after your death. Lifetime issues addressed by proper planning are issues of control and benefit. If you are in the majority of the population, you will experience a period of incapacity prior to death. Upon incapacity, you are no longer legally in a position to make decisions regarding your health care choices, financial decisions, or possibly even your living arrangements. By creating good powers of attorney, you are appointing the person or people you trust to make decisions for you when you are no longer able. Powers of attorney are the foundation of every good estate plan. Powers of attorney come in two main kinds: the healthcare power of attorney and the financial power of attorney. These documents each address the legal area in which their name implies. But, surprising to many people, powers of attorney are only legally valid during your lifetime. At death, your powers of attorney expire and are no longer legally valid, leaving your family to then rely on the rest of your planning. After life, a Last Will & Testament or a Trust will form the centerpiece of a good estate plan. The goal of either instrument is: first, to eliminate confusion about who is in control after your death, and secondly to clearly direct the distribution of your assets to those people or charities of your choosing. Far too often, poor planning causes fighting and hard feelings by leaving these questions unanswered. Using a Will or a Trust as a central component of your plan will provide significant clarity and a smooth transition after death. A good estate plan addresses your particular concerns and goals. A cookie cutter approach to estate planning most often leads to confusion and fighting. By taking the time to address your family’s unique relationships and situation, you are setting your family on a course to avoid many of the issues and fighting caused by improper planning or no planning at all. Depending upon your particular goals, a good estate can be drafted to suit your personalized needs and goals. Seeking the counsel of an attorney well versed in estate planning to assist you in creating a solid plan will likely provide a firm foundation for your family for generations to come.

Even Melissa is sometimes surprised that she and her husband are living the dream. “That we did it is honestly the most surprising thing. You always have these dreams and we actually followed through,” said Melissa, who (with Aaron) owns Seven Arrows Brewing in Waynesboro. “People are in here and … it just makes you happy to know you’ve done something you love to do and people are happy here.” Aaron, a chemical engineer by trade, decided right after college that he wanted to work at a brewery. And after several years working at a veterinary pharmaceutical company, he was offered a position with Coors Brewing, which brought him and his wife out to Virginia in 2008 — always with the full intention of starting a brewery of his own one day. While working at Coors, he got a diploma in brewing and completed one of his master brewer exams. Melissa, who’s been in on the idea of running a brewery with her husband from the start and got her MBA to help learn about running a business, lets Aaron do the brewing while she mans the back end of the business — everything from hiring bartenders and scheduling food trucks to balancing the books… all while working full time with her other job as a software engineer.

Oh yea, you read that right. There are food trucks. “We toyed with the idea of doing a restaurant, but quite frankly that’s not our passion,” said Melissa, who loves beer, but doesn’t know much about the food industry. She said she loves working with the food trucks because their level of excitement for food is on par with her and Aaron’s excitement for beer. “So we’ve been looking at partnering with food trucks, because food is their passion.” Between her gig as a software engineer and the time she spends at the brewery, Melissa is clocking in at 80 to 100 hours most weeks, so her passion is evident. Aaron’s passion shows through in different ways - like the name of the brewery and his beers. Seven Arrows is a nod to a Native American blessing (Aaron is part Native American) that recognizes the creator, the earth, the four directions, and back to the creator. Their logo, the compass rose, also points north, south, east, and west.

“The naming of the beers reflects my journey into craft beer,” said Aaron.

Now is the time to jumpstart your health & wellness.

To some, it may seem like a strange route to take for a trained scientist like Aaron, but he says that’s exactly why he loves beer. “I really like that brewing is a science and an art at the same time,” said Aaron, who’s been working full time on Seven Arrows since September 2014. “You can technically make a beer to what you intended (that is, you hit gravity, bitterness, alcohol) but that doesn’t mean the beer is going to taste good. You have to have a relationship with the raw ingredients to understand how all these tastes go together to articulate a flavor profile. But you also have to have the science and math background to know how the ingredients have to be processed.” BRL

The Luke Effect In the early morning of December 20th, I was awakened by my wife Joanie to the words, ‘don’t panic, but we have to go to the hospital right now’ referring to an apparent complication in her pregnancy and our unborn child, still 6 weeks from an estimated due date. We quickly rushed to the hospital where they performed an emergency C-section thereby aiding in the birth of my second son, Luke. Due to Luke being pre-term, he was forced to stay in the hospital receiving special care for 13 days. As I stared at him behind a thick glass wall during the later hours of that fateful morning, I was amazed how the hypnotic and mundane movements of such a simple and usually subconscious act had suddenly become the center of my entire focus. Drawing upon my recent theme of simplicity in the landscape and the above reminder that sometimes the most ordinary task is the most important for the foundation in the grand scheme, I will apply that consideration in the landscape. Jumbled, congested landscapes are not the exception, but are a sobering reminder that most gardeners and their attitude towards ‘that next plant’ more closely resemble the plight of a drug addict and ‘that next fix’ than some sort of all encompassing grand plan formulated and studied well before the first shovel hits the dirt. The end result can sometimes be a myriad of amazing species assembled through years of toiling through garden centers and trade magazines but all buried in the spotlight of the encroaching preceding plant and overshadowed by the anticipation of the next. In layman’s terms; “your landscape is too busy”. The bottom line you ask? 1) Plants need space to breathe, perform and strut, 2) specimens need other plants that are grouped en masse in order to really be, well, specimentacious and, 3) specimen grade plants and even

structures need real estate so their uniqueness is truly unique and can be thoroughly appreciated. For example, a Japanese Umbrella Pine alongside a Nootka False Cypress and a lighted stone column screams ocular terrorism while a Nootka False Cypress (specimen) associated with a winding line of dwarf boxwood and masse of variegated liriope would, well, Ahhhhh!!! Yeah, like that; put a one “Wow!” beside a mass of “yawn” and it works every time. Specimens are qualified by unique characteristics with noteworthy form and/or texture being the primary distinguishing factors. They typically have strong colors (deep greens, Carolina blues, golden yellow, etc.) and notable detail (unique branching or foliage, exfoliating bark, vivid blooms, etc.) thus beckoning us on the path to linger and pause more so than to accelerate and fast forward. Fragrance is not typical with a specimen but can be an interesting association since it brings a whole new sense into the experience. You’ve seen them; a specimen anchors Monet’s Giverny bridge (weeping willow); one sits on an open pasture against an Arrington sky on Oak Ridge Road (white oak); two stand like soldiers as you enter Pharsalia (stone columns). No, they are not always plants but yes, they are always picturesque and should leave a strong impression. As plants, some can be used en masse…some. The location of that next “Wow!” in your landscape should be thought studied and examined carefully. Specimens, whether that next Chamaecyparis ‘Nootkanensis’ or that next outdoor chimney, are typically not cheap and demand elbow room and attention. Pay attention to areas where people naturally want to congregate, where guests walk or outside your favorite window. And please, control the urge and let it breathe … By the way, mom and Luke are both home and fine. Life is good.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My knee hurts. Would a cortisone shot fix it? Cortisone (or steroid) shots can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal pains. Cortisone is a steroid chemical that the body naturally produces. In a shot, we use a man made version. Its purpose is to reduce inflammation. Often a joint or bursa hurts a lot when there is inflammation from an injury, overuse, or arthritis. The steroid is put directly into the joint where the inflammation (and resultant pain) is by a shot. This allows us to use a high dose of steroid into one specific area so that there really aren’t many side effects in the body overall. The following are a few situations where a steroid shot may be considered. A painter who works with his arms overhead starts to get shoulder pain. We try exercises and medicines by mouth, but he is still having a lot of trouble. A shot of steroid in the shoulder may cut down inflammation enough to both stop his pain and allow his joint to heal. Another example might be a runner with knee pain. After careful determination that there

is no broken bone or torn tendon, a steroid shot placed into the knee may give great relief. Or, an otherwise healthy person starts to have hip pain every time she lies down on her left hip. There is a bursa there that can get irritated and does quite will with a steroid injection. Cortisone shots can be used many other places as well, these are just a few examples. Certainly there are risks from a steroid shot, but they are generally minor and rare. It does hurt a little as it is a shot! But we use a numbing spray before inserting the needle. Skin color change in the injection area is possible. On occasion people get a “steroid flare” where the pain gets worse before it gets better. Finally, joint infection is possible (but very uncommon). Doctors use careful sterilizing techniques to prevent this. So, if you have joint pain that is not going away, see your doctor. Perhaps a steroid injection would help you. Dr. Stephen Schmitzis a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Building Leg Power It is winter and snow sports abound whether it is snowboarding, downhill or cross country skiing. The crisp air and beautiful scenery beckon us outdoors. Even winter hikes are invigorating and on clear days, the view is long and breathtaking from the top. If you are feeling as if your legs are not quite up to par for outside activities, try these exercises that will increase strength and power. Wall Sits: With your back and arms against the wall and feet approximately 18” away from the wall, slide down to a “sitting” position until you have a downward slope to your thighs. Contract your abdominal muscles so your low back is flat against the wall and press your shoulder blades and arms into the wall to activate your back muscles. Hold the position for 20-60 seconds depending on your fatigue point. Rest 30 seconds between reps. Repeat 6-8 times. Caution: if you have knee issues, limit how far you slide downward. Lunges: Stand with tall posture, take a large step forward with your right leg bending the right knee to a 90 degree

bend. The back knee will also bend as you keep your spine upright and tall, pulling in your core muscles. Hold 10-15 seconds, then repeat leading with the left leg. Repeat 10-15 times on each leg depending on your fitness level. Single leg balance: Start first by balancing on the floor with your right leg. The balancing knee must be slightly bent. Keep your eyes focused on a nonmoving object to assist you. If you can do that for 60 seconds, then progress to balancing on two sofa cushions that you place on the floor. If you can do that easily for 60 seconds, then progress to balancing on your bed. Try to challenge yourself but be near something to hold onto for safety. Time yourself and when you have reached 60 seconds easily, move to the next level. Repeat four times on each leg. Everyone benefits from stronger legs and these exercises are one method to build power without using any equipment. Incorporate them throughout your day to energize you. To view pictures of these exercises and for technique tips, see our website under “fitness”. Good luck!
