thepublishers Shortly after we went to press, we lost our second dog. After Martina’s passing we were worried about ol’ Nick, who had come to us as a rescue from Almost Home. He had been dumped there on Christmas Eve some years ago, hence his name. This old beagle was loyal to us, but mostly to Martina. Where she went, he followed. He may have been the male but Martina wore the pants in the house. So when she died, we began looking for a companion. But dogs can be smarter than we think they are. A few days after Martina’s passing, Nick’s breathing became labored and he started to swell. The diagnosis was cancer. He had apparently had it for a while but after his best friend left, he threw in the towel. His soul had already left us and his body was slowly catching up to the departure. Tommy’s father died last summer and since then, we’ve worried about his mother. As I write this, Tommy is rushing to Tennessee to beat a snowstorm so that he can be with Mama Staff in her final days. He’s grabbing a quick bite with Peyton, and Adam is in the shed recording a video of Otis and Martina 2.0. So yes, as luck would have it, a friend guided us to a sweet young
couple in Palmyra whose dog bore a litter late last year. “Save us two,” I told her. “A boy and a girl.” Over the hills and through the woods to the puppies’ house we went. Adam decided to name his pooch Otis (after the movie) and Peyton, who still very much misses Martina, wanted “another Martina.” “No, Martina is in heaven. Your dog should be Violet!” Adam insisted. “I miss Martina and I want Martina!” Peyton explained. Martina 2.0, it is. May I one day achieve the honor of becoming a Mama Staff 2.0. Love always. basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Sustainable and natural wines “Man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard.” ― Chief Luther Standing Bear Trends come and go. Some trends that feel new have in fact been around for eons. Just like much of the New Age spiritualism that is actually old-age, so too with the very popular movement of “natural” wines. Note that this is different from the labeling of foods as “natural”. On grocery store shelves across our country, “natural” takes on a catholic embrace that means little. It’s confusing to consumers at best, and a marketing gimmick at worst. Yet when referring to wine, the word “natural” won’t appear on labels. The natural wine movement is simply a trend toward less manipulated wines. Many wine drinkers have no idea just how many artificial additives are put into conventional wine. Do we want to put those chemicals into the earth and into our bodies? In Vouvray François Pinon says, “I see guys in the vineyard wearing space suits to protect themselves from the chemicals they’re spraying on their own land. If they’re taking those precautions, then
Upland Hunting In The Blue Ridge
www.priestview.com Nelson County, VA
they know it’s bad. Yet they’d still sell you their wine.” The natural movement is an inevitable reaction to wines that are too concentrated, too sulfured, over-filtered and over-extracted. The difference, in other words, between the wine maker as magician, pulling forth wine from his hat and taking most of the credit, and wine that is “made in the vineyard.” Proponents of natural wines say, let the vineyard produce the wine and don’t mess with it. Keeping your vines and vineyard in the best condition is the priority opposed to practices such as micro-oxygenating the wine or adding sugar, all tricks of the winemaker as magician. For more, watch the documentary Mondo Vino (it’s not hard to tell the bias here) that juxtaposes an estate I adore, Mas de Daumas Gassac, with the powerful conglomerate, Robert Mondavi. There is also Natural Resistance introducing the natural wine movement, and featuring Arianna Occhipinti about whom I’ve written before, and Elena Pantelioni, a friend, and I can’t count the times I’ve written of her exceptional estate, La Stoppa. While natural wines are often organic or biodynamic, they may or may
not be sustainably produced, though usually are. Sustainably-produced wines are made with the intention of having as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Sustainablemethod wineries often opt for solar power, water reclamation systems and recycling programs. Les Grimaudes, Costières de Nîmes, 2013 (Natural, biodynamic) – Emmanuelle Kreydenweiss makes this Basics’ favourite with her Alsatian husband. Farmed biodynamically without SO2 additions. Aromas of blackberry pie, stewed prunes and cardamom. $15.99 Château Suau, blanc, 2013 (organic) – Hidden behind a row of 100-year-old oaks, Château Suau was once the hunting lodge of the Duc d’Eperon. It was restored in the 16th century and in 1687, during the reign of Louis XVI, the château was owned by the Suau family of Capian. Monique Bonnet bought the estate in 1986 and is now the current wine maker, lending her great style and elegance. Look for notes of citrus, honeysuckle and pineapple. Sublime with shellfish and seafood. $12.99. Next month: Biodynamic wines.

THESE GUYS KNOW HOW TO DELIVER A VALENTINE continued on page 14
Scott Price and another member of Breezeway, a barbershop quartet, ride an elevator as they go to sing two love songs on the day before Valentine’s Day last year. Nick Kozel and Jim Bell warm up in the car before a performance (above). They are part of the Harrisonburg Harmonizers, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Four men in matching red blazers and bow ties hopped out of a car and headed into the Little Peoples Preschool in Penn Laird on Valentine’s Day last year. Katie Oates, a teacher at the school, had no idea what was coming. The four men walked into the room, where Oates and her students had gathered. They began to sing, Let me Call You Sweetheart.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” Oates thought. 12
Blue Ridge LIFE
FEBRUARY 2016
The men were members of Breezeway, a barbershop quartet, and they were there to surprise Oates with a singing valentine orchestrated by Oates’ husband, Kenny. As the quartet sang, Oates’ three and four-year-old students sat quietly, mesmerized by the performance. “It was lovely and beautiful,” she said. Along with their stop at the preschool, the Barbershop Quartet performed at a doctor’s office, James Madison University, a few restaurants, and a nursing home. In all, the quartet delivered about three dozen singing valentines that day. “We have a lot of fun doing it and people are pleasantly surprised when we go,” said Jim Bell, a local minister who has been performing with the quartet for the past few years. “We’ve sang for just about every kind of person out there.” Bell and the rest of the quartet are part of the Harrisonburg Harmonizers, a group of about thirty men who gather each Monday night to practice their “barbershop style” of a cappella songs arranged for male voices in close fourpart harmony. Bell, at 60, says he is one of the youngest members.
Jim Bell gives a last minute adjustment to Nick Kozel’s bow-tie before a performance at the JMU health center. At right are Tom Hoover and Scott Price (above). The barbershop quartet also sang to Gail Noble at Sunnyside, a retirement community in Harrisonburg (below).
The singing valentine is the group’s largest fundraiser, allowing them to travel and participate in competitions throughout the year. Anyone can book the Barbershop Quartet to deliver a singing valentine to a spouse, family member, colleague, or friend. The group travels “from Staunton to Mount Jackson and any place in between,” said Mike Calhoun, another member of the Harrisonburg Harmonizers. Each performance includes two or three songs, a rose, and a card for the lucky recipient. “That’s the most fun, just seeing how people react,” Bell said. “The person we sing to, nine times out of ten it’s a surprise. Sometimes they are rather embarrassed or quiet.” continued on page 14

Bell said the most awkward performance he has been apart of took place at a doctor’s office, when a woman hired the group to sing to her husband. “I think he felt kind of awkward having a men’s quartet coming and singing for him at his doctors office,” Bell laughed. A special performance was for an 85-year-old grandmother who’s birthday fell on Valentine’s Day. “That was real special for her,” Bell said. But his favorite performance so far, was in the atrium of the rec center at James Madison University. Bell and his quartet members had been hired to deliver a singing valentine to woman who worked there. “There were hundreds of students there,” Bell said. “Everybody came out of the balconies…we had a lot of students taking videos with their

phones. We usually throw in two or three extra songs for everybody if they are enjoying it.” One year later, Katie Oates still has the rose and card she received from her singing valentine. She said the performance was so unexpected because she and her husband don’t usually celebrate Valentine’s Day. “We just decided ourselves that we love each other all the time and we don’t have to show it one special day. It’s always there. I know he loves me and he knows I love him.” Still she said the singing valentine made for a marvelous day. The only problem, she thought as the Barbershop Quartet finished their performance, “I said, wow Kenny, I got you nothing.” Perhaps she could call Bell and the Barbershop Quartet this year. BRL

BRENT MANOR
Starting a vineyard from scratch is a labor of love. Opening it on your wedding anniversary is pure genius.
The traditional anniversary gift for 17 years of marriage is wine or spirits. Most couples splurge for a great bottle of Scotch. Some even make a trip out of it and head to wine country. But the Raposos took it to the next level. “We bought the property in 2009 and over the next several years we planted the vineyard. Then began working on the winery building itself,” said Jorge Raposo, owner of Brent Manor Vineyards, the newest varietal of wineries in Nelson County. “I’ve been doing most of the work myself on the weekends so we finally opened the tasting room on October 10.” “Our 17th wedding anniversary!” Interrupted his wife, coowner and business partner Tracie. They never intended to open their new vineyard on their anniversary (that best weekend for that was just super coincidental); having a winery has been a long-time dream for the couple, who still lives a few hours away in Stafford and makes the weekly trip to Nelson on weekends until they build their new homestead down here in Faber. Jorge’s love of wine is deeply ingrained. As a young kid in Portugal and then the United States, he remembers his dad making wine. “So when I grew up and got married, we kept that up for our own personal consumption,” said Jorge, who pronounces his name in the Portuguese way (like a soft pronunciation of George), even though it’s spelled exactly like the Spanish version of the name. After years of hosting wine dinners at home together, the pair visited Carlton, Oregon in 2008 and were inspired by an awesome B&B and its innkeepers. They decided on that trip that they knew what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives. continued on page 18

“I drafted the rough plans that were to become the B&B on the plane on the way back,” said Jorge. “That was January 2008 and we spent the next year looking for property. The more we looked at sites, the more we knew we wanted to be in Nelson.” The B&B is still a few years out, but Jorge’s lifelong love of winemaking made the first half of their dream a quick reality. The wines on hand are what he calls “old world meets new world,” and he’s stocking two of his own 2014 varietals (a Chambourcin and a Viognier) along with a few other Gabriele Rausse Virginia wines and several tastes from Portugal. Last year, he ramped up production, though, so next season visitors can expect eight Brent Manor Vineyards originals. Not at all farmers by trade – Jorge’s a software developer and Tracie’s a system supervisor, both for Geico in Fredericksburg – the most surprising thing to Jorge has been the speed at which the deer gobble up his new vines. For his wife, however, the surprises have been much more pleasant. “I love the interaction with the people that come in tasting wines; sometimes they’ve never experienced this wine area so I really enjoy that,” said Tracie. “And the fact that a lot of people get refereed to us by other wineries. A lot of people have supported us throughout our journey and the support and openness that Nelson has given to us, I couldn’t expect anything more than that.” BRL

2015 year end residential real estate summary for Nelson County
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
The greater Charlottesville area, encompassing the city of Charlottesville and five surrounding counties including Nelson County, experienced tremendous growth. In fact, home sales increased in all jurisdictions with Nelson County leading the pack. Nelson may have been the area leader in number of sales, but price and days on market did not end the year on a positive note. Here is a market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Countywide Overview; 248 residential properties sold in 2015 which represents a 28% increase from 2014 when 194 properties sold. Statistical Comparisons; Q1Q4 2014 recap: 194 sales, median $238,875, average price $277,062, average price per sq ft $141.50, days on market (DOM) 169. Q1-Q4 2015: 248 sales, median $199,900, average price $240,746, average price per sq
ft $130.66, days on market (DOM) 203, median DOM of 119. While sales had an impressive annual gain of 28%, the median price is at a ten year low with an annual decrease of 16%. With price declining and days on market increasing, sellers must be diligent at setting a market driven price to even achieve a sale, and especially if targeting a timely sale. On a positive note, the absorption of properties from the current inventory may enable “future” price growth based on the principle of supply and demand. Countywide, there are currently 280 active residential properties for sale compared to 318 at this time last year; the average asking price per sq ft is relatively unchanged at $163.69 today verses a year ago at $166.81. Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 128 sales at an average price per sq ft of $144.59, Stoney Creek (valley) with 23 sales at an average price per sq
Marlo Allen
ft of $133.97, and all other non-resort or county properties with 97 sales and an average price per sq ft of $111.50. When comparing 2015 sales with 2014 sales, all 3 markets saw an increase in sales and a reduction in price. The greatest sales growth was in Wintergreen at 39% followed by the county at 20% and Stoney Creek at 10%. The deterioration of price per sq ft was greatest in the county at 12% followed by Wintergreen at 7% and Stoney Creek at 1%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 128 properties sold representing 44 detached homes and 84 attached/condos. Hence, 66% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the non-resort county locality with the most sales was Shipman with 17 sales followed by Afton with 16. Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; 2015 Monthly Sales: January-18, February-15, March-18, April-16, May-24, June-18, July-21,
434-996-3525
August-24, September-22, October-34, November-15, December-23. The strongest month was October and the slowest months were February and November. 2015 Quarterly Summary: Q1-51, Q2-58, Q3-67, Q4-72. Q4 recognized the highest number of sales while Q1 achieved the fewest. Historically the second half of the year consistently outperforms the first half. Percentage increase in sales when comparing the second half of the year with the first half: 2013 - 32%, 2014 - 26%, 2015 - 28%. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. LOVE IN EVERY STITCH
FEBRUARY 2016
When Anne Williams’ daughters were both in college, she found herself with a lot more time on her hands than she was used to having. As somewhat of an empty nester, she knew she was going to have to find a hobby - and fast. “I wanted to be doing something productive with my time besides helping them, since they just weren’t going to be needing my help quite the same way,” she said. “I knew there was going to be a void.” Her daytimes were covered – she’s been the morning host of WNRN for 16 years – but she knew she’d have some time to kill after work. But Anne wasn’t sure what to hone in on until she remembered a long-ago interest in quilt-making. “When I moved here to my house eight years ago, I thought I wanted to make T-shirt quilts; there are a lot of T-shirts that are part of the process of public radio and I had bins and bins of them,” she said. “My mother-in-law gave me a sewing machine, but I put it away and it was dormant for six years.” After attempting an apron and a dress, she found herself at Cottonwood, a quilting store on Barracks Road. She knew she’d found her niche. “The store had books, they had friendly people and I ended up taking a beginning quilting lesson there and then regular classes,” she said. “Here was an environment that was focused completely on quilting and I had access to everything.” These days, she’s working part-time at Cottonwood and has extreme insider access – from getting
tips from experts to early access to patterns and fabrics. She even makes some of the display quilts for the store. Anne said it had been a couple of decades since she felt that passionate about anything.
“It was the same feeling that I had when I was 18 or 19 and walked into a radio station for the first time as a volunteer,” she said. “I just wanted to know everything about it.” One of her most recent quilts combines her two favorite things - she made a custom quilt for her radio station, WNRN Charlottesville. She customized a quilt originally designed to have appliqué baseball bats, gloves and mitts that she saw in a magazine and designed an appliqué version of the station logo to use instead. Usually Anne quilts her own projects, but she decided to send this one to a professional quilter who has a computer in her machine and was able to stitch in musical elements like treble clefs, a G-clef and eighth notes. When she got it back, she put a sleeve on the top like a curtain rod and now it hangs from the ceiling at the station. “It’s interesting to see people’s reactions to it because some people are like ‘Whatever,’ and others are like ‘Oh my gosh how much time did this take?’” Anne said of her first original design. “It was a lot of work, but I’m glad I did it. There’s love in every stitch.” BRL

FEBRUARY 2016
Located in the heart of historic downtown Staunton, unlike other commercial breweries and taprooms, Redbeard is pretty much a one-man show, run by owner, entrepreneur, and Brewmaster extraordinaire, Jonathan Wright. Cooking up around 150 barrels a year, Wright’s operation is what connoisseurs would call a “Nano Brewery.” Which, in terms of product, means Wright gets to personally focus on crafting a duplicity of artisanal varieties, in a plethora of different ways. In turn, Thursdays through Sundays, patrons of Redbeard have the privilege of hanging out in the brewery’s homely furnished taproom sipping from freshly brewed, truly local beer. And, as the man who does the brewing is nearly always available, returning customers have the not-so-fringe benefit of putting in requests for the upcoming beer menu. In an effort to bring you the inside story behind one of the Blue Ridge’s most delectable secrets, Blue Ridge Life dropped by Redbeard and talked with Jonathan Wright about the art of brewing nano, his entrepreneurial roots, and much more.

Could you enlighten our readers as per what exactly a ‘Nano Brewery’ is? How does the approach differ from a typical commercial operation? A “Nano Brewery,” loosely defined, is a brewery producing less than 500 barrels annually. I interpret the idea as follows: “Small Batches of Big Beers.” Here at Redbeard, this means 1.5 barrels brewed at a time, with an annual output of around 150 barrels.

What’s the story behind Redbeard’s opening? How’d you guys get started? JW: Both sides of my family have a multi-generational history of making alcohol in Virginia, both legally and otherwise. So that spurred the interest in brewing originally. After doing some home brewing and getting positive feedback from experienced palates, I decided to begin working on putting a business model together. At the time, VA Senate Bill 604, which would allow breweries to sell their products onsite, was being debated in state legislature. I took a gamble that the bill would pass, and decided to work on opening a small local brewery — the kind you would have seen all over the country prior to prohibition. At that point, I’d been self-employed for a number of years as a Certified Real Estate Appraiser, so while I continued to run that business, I began putting together Redbeard Brewing. Over the course of a year, I acquired the bits and pieces necessary to build the brewing equipment, engineered and built said equipment, found and leased a space, dealt with the assorted federal, state, and local regulatory hurdles, and finally opened on June 21, 2013.

continued from page 29
What are the merits of running a brewer of this size? I don’t know there’s any particular merit to running a small brewery rather than a large one. In my case, I just can’t work for other people. Since I’d been self-employed for some time when I opened Redbeard, in a field that was completely autonomous, it made sense to me to run the entire brewery, back to front, soup to nuts, by myself. So starting as small as was reasonably possible was a necessity. What’s your tap schedule and rotation like? We have anywhere from six to ten beers on tap at a time at Redbeard, depending on the time of year. During peak-time, demand exceeds the supply I’m able to produce, and we get down to six taps for a few months. During those periods, we stick with an approachable but varied selection (i.e., an American Pale Ale, English Brown Ale, Belgian Saison, IPA, Black IPA, and Blueberry Wheat). During slower periods—such as the early fall—I add taps and push things a little more style-wise. (For instance, we just added a Sweet Potato Pie Porter, Belgian Tripel brewed with Wild Blackberries, and an English Dark Mild Ale.) Typically, we change the tap-list every three weeks. Sometimes that’s one tap swapping out for something I’ve made

before, sometimes its three or four new beers. Again, it depends on the time of year. Additionally, we do seasonal beers that only get released once a year, like a Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout called Moriarty, and a Peppermint Stout. Our X-mas Beer [was] released on Black Friday (November 27), along with a one-day-only menu featuring 11 big dark beers—including a 2014 Moriarty aged 15 months in Van Winkle 10-year barrels, a few of our black flagships, and cellared kegs of one-offs made throughout the year. With so much brewing freedom, how do you decide what to make? As in, what’s the rationale behind your deciding to brew this or that beer now? While it was torturous to begin with, deciding when and what to brew has become easier with each success and failure. Sometimes, the decision is based on what’s popular in the market or the time of year. Other times, I want to showcase an under-appreciated style. Still other times, a regular will drop by with 20 pounds of blackberries from their backyard garden. Ultimately, my decision-making is based primarily on what I feel will be received best in the taproom, by our customers. BRL

As a means to avoid the subject of dying, or maybe just to avoid lawyers, many people do no estate planning at all, or try to use a DIY source to write their own estate plan. If you feel like the whole thing is too complicated or may somehow put a hex on you, rest assured that spending some time to do it right is worth it! Approximately 55% of adults in America have done no estate planning (they have no Last Will, Trust, or any dispositive plan), and for people under the age of 35 that percentage increases to an estimated 92%! If you are one of those people without a plan, please consider the consequences before it’s too late! If you have no Will or Trust to control the distribution of your estate, then at death the Laws of Intestacy will govern your affairs. This body of law constitutes a “default” estate plan written by the State for everyone who dies without taking care of it during life. The Laws of Intestacy create different outcomes for different people depending upon their situation when they die. For example, in Virginia there are different results for those who are single (whether they were ever married or not), those in a second marriage, those who have children or not, those who’s spouse had children that were not their biological or adopted children. In my experience, most people would not ever want their estate distributed the way the Laws of Intestacy force it to go. The do-it-yourself, or DIY, sort of planning is very appealing to some who want to have something in place and feel like they can handle it with a “trusted source” for pre-written documents. But be warned, while I believe every person should have an estate plan, I have worked with some DIY documents which have created a legal nightmare for their loved ones after death. In some cases, the DIY documents were legally invalid altogether. In other cases, the primary distribution of the estate went to the wrong person (or so it appeared from conflicting beneficiary designations, which over-ride the Last Will). Often when I sit down with a client, they will have a preconceived idea of how to achieve their desired goals. But, a significant role of the attorney is to spot issues and help the client realize their goals in the most cost-effective and simplest manner possible. Attorneys are sometimes accused of making mountains out of mole hills, but I think that attorneys actually just blow the smoke off the mountain that already existed. Simple is good - when it is done right. But, don’t make the mistake of creating a DIY legal mess for simple or doing nothing as the simple way. In both cases, simple is simply a potential disaster waiting to happen. Speak to an attorney that practices estate planning for guidance and help today!

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure
Put Adventure into your Resolution We’re about a month into the Year of the Monkey and adventures abound. We hope your New Year’s Resolution(s) included getting out the front door and checking out more of those trails nearest you. We’ve already bolted out the door and hit the trails and the not-quite-trails-yet trails over at Paul’s Creek. Recently, I was visiting my buddy, Neil, who lives near Paul’s Creek over near the Rockfish Valley Community Center. After one of Trager Bros. Coffee’s great Quad Tall Lattes (they are awesome!), I decided it was time to find the source of Paul’s Creek. A quick study of the maps and figured this would be a great morning’s adventure and as all adventures go, you never know. So, out the backdoor and to the creek we go. This adventure starts off easy with a dirt road turn to singletrack trail to follow up stream. As anyone that’s done something like this before, that’s the easy part. After
about 30 minutes, I reached the slides and the trail came to an end. There were no traces anyone had ventured any further. Neither side of the creek offered any easy solutions to continue upstream. So I figured I would scramble on up the mountain side to get a better view for route selection from above. The terrain wasn’t the easiest because of the steepness but not too incredibly tough with just deadfall and leaf coverage. After about 50 yards up the mountain, that’s where everything changed. As I made my way up the slope, I noticed just up above the terrain looked to level off a touch. Well, it just so happened to be an old fire road. This made travel easy and I was able to keep Paul’s Creek in sight. ‘Oh, this will be easy,’ I thought. Well every adventure has this moment just before the floor falls out from under you. Not to be overly dramatic but the fire road came to an end. My Easy Street fire road comes to
an end but in the leaves I discover an old timber trail. My adventure has grown new legs as I begin marching through the knee deep leaves with my new old timber trail, still following Paul’s Creek. One timber trail then connects with another and crossing confluences along the way. I can see why Paul’s Creek rages when it rains in the area. Well along the way, I came across an area that I’m sure you’ve heard of: Crawford’s Knob Natural Area Preserve. This is definitely a great local adventure worth taking when time is not an issue. And when you arrive at the source of Paul’s Creek, take a picture and share it with us at #EmbraceTheAdventure. We can meet over at one of Nelson County’s many fine watering holes and discuss our findings. If your New Year’s Resolutions involve any outdoor competitive adventures, keep an eye on Wintergreen this summer. Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series
presented by Bold Rock Hard Cider is getting ramped up and final details will soon be released. In the meantime, below are some upcoming events sure to challenge you. Stay tuned to our social media channels for details. Cliffhanger Challenge – Memorial day weekend: featuring music, cider, beer and BBQ fest, and vendors Summers End Fest – Labor Day weekend: featuring music, F&B, and vendors Trail Rodeo- Columbus Day weekend: Exciting new event, details to come for this stage race Also, right down the rural road, stay tuned for James River State Park’s Adventures on the James Games starting with an Adventure Race (Scavenger Hunt) on March 5th. So, get planning or just set out your front door and Embrace the Adventure.

FEBRUARY 2016
sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC
Go Plant a Tree With winter in full swing and your landscape in complete dormancy, now is a great time to find those holes in your vertical landscape and begin the thought process of adding in some trees. Fall is a good time to plant, but late winter is not too far from being just as good – in particular for a few species that seem to just take the transplant shock better in the dead of winter (Crape Myrtle, Oaks, etc.). The ground could be hard, but moisture levels are ever increasing and most garden centers are stocking thereby guaranteeing you a fresh ball. Here are some tips and things to consider. The biggest fallacy of planting trees is incorrectly judging distances in relation to overall mature size. Best rule of thumb is to take the mature size and divide it by two to get the radius and then measure that distance from structures and view sheds that you wish to preserve. No, most of us will never experience the mature size of a tree that is planted now from a 10 foot specimen, but the ultimate height and width must be a consideration. Equally important is understanding the branching structure of certain species and how they can be trained to allow for under canopy pruning to open view sheds. Oaks, maples and other large species can give you 10 feet (+) of under canopy area where dogwoods, Japanese snowbells and other mid to small sized trees do not offer this same luxury. Evergreens are perhaps one of the trickier groups since the under canopy pruning should be avoided like the plague. Very few plants in this group allow for pruning without leaving a nasty wound that will remind you for the life of the plant (or you – which ever comes first) that you mistakenly misjudged their ultimate size. Included in this
group are magnolias, spruces and arborvitae – plants whose complete skirt shape should be heralded as an asset and not ever see the blade of a lopping shear. Again, taking the overall width and dividing in half will at least give you a barometer as to where to plant in relation to structures, driveways and view sheds. Tipping (or cutting a portion of the lower limbs) is acceptable but complete removal of a limb is unadvised. Once the location is found, the hole and planting plan are straightforward – dig the hole at least 1 ½ the size of the ball and the same depth. Soil should be amended accordingly and should never be frozen as it goes back into the hole as this will cause air gaps around the ball. The first watering should commence before the soil is placed back in the hole to thoroughly wet the ball, and then again after it is planted. A winter feed of an organic fertilizer (like chicken manure, Tree Tone) should be applied at the time of planting along with at least a starter mulch to prevent desiccation. Remember, all newly planted trees, not just evergreens, need water throughout the winter season depending on available moisture – in particular just before a hard drop in the mercury. Alas, if you haven’t figured this one out yet, I am a huge proponent of planting trees. Trees are great for the earth, for our feathered friends and, when properly placed, for both the cooling/ heating AND resale of your home. Every tree I plant around my current home is but a short term pleasure for me; however it give me a sense of fulfillment thinking that a future generation, maybe even unbeknownst to me, may bask in the grandeur of their canopy on a warm summer’s day and thank the author for its existence.
asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, I am tired all the time and I think I have hypothyroidism. What do you think? I see lots of folks who think there is something medically wrong with them because they are tired. Often, when I hear about their life and schedule, it is no wonder they can’t keep their eyes open! They are up with the kids early, running around all day, working, playing, watching TV, exercising or not, shopping, and not sleeping a whole lot. I certainly fall into a pattern like this some days too- “well if I stay up a little later tonight I will get it done...” What to do about that I don’t know, but it is certainly clear that most of the time people who are tired have a good reason to be that way. But, there are some people who have medical reasons to feel run down, tired, sleepy, or out of energy. Anemia, sleep apnea, depression, and hypothyroidism are some of the possible causes. I think the most common thing people think of when they consider whether they have a medical cause for feeling run down is hypothyroidism. The thyroid is a gland at the bottom of the neck in the If you are ready for a faster internet connection, you are ready for Exede Broadband.
front that makes thyroid hormone. Thyroid helps to control all kinds of things like: heat and cold tolerance, mood, alertness, hydration, hair and nail health, muscle strength, and weight management. If the thyroid quits working (which can happen for a variety of reasons such as infection or a person’s own immune system destroying the thyroid gland) then all of those systems the thyroid controls can go haywire. Generally people become tired, down, constipated, cold sensitive, achy, and they gain weight. A blood test is usually all that is needed to diagnose the problem. Once found, it is fairly easy to treat by using medicine to replace the missing thyroid hormone. So, if you have several of the above symptoms, and can’t think of a good reason in your lifestyle to cause them, it probably is worth talking with your doctor about it to see if the testing is warranted for you.
