thepublishers The snow fairy must have read last month’s column because we are on deadline with half a foot of the white stuff on the ground! And since it’s a dry snow, we haven’t had to deal with cracking branches and tangled power lines. The kids haven’t been able to make a snowman with it yet, but I’ve been keeping a bundle of carrots all winter. The last time Peyton saw me chop some up for a roast, she flashed her you-are-betraying-me eyes and dropped a truth bomb: “You are cutting up Frosty’s nose.” My reply? “We have more noses in the fridge.” But even dry, unpackable snow can’t keep the kids from playing outside. As both waged wars with piles of Goretex in the mudroom, I climbed up to the loft in the shed to bring down the sleds I had put up just days ago when temps had spiked to 73°F. And I heard a rooster crow. Yes, we’ve done the chicken thing. And let me tell you something: These birds do not play in the snow like my kids do. As I opened the little door to let the chickens range, one brave hen bounced out, only to flutter back in when she saw the rest of her clan

staying inside. So I shoveled a track between the coop and the old tractor shed, a poultry speakeasy of sorts where the hens discuss global events of no importance as their two roosters, um, display their dominance. They most recently were likely talking about the passing of one of their own. When Peyton saw the limp bird she said, “She needs to wake up. Her friends don’t know where she is.” Adam was sailing the feathers in the air (there had been a scuffle) and watching them float back down to the grass. And then another truth bomb from Peyton: “Adam, those feathers can fly high up in the sky and land on a rainbow.” That’s exactly where chickens go to die. They get on a sled, and ride rainbows. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Intangible Joys It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all. ―Laura Ingalls Wilder

aimed at celebrating the most important moment in the lives of people.” The reference goes on to point out that the Gallic meal emphasizes “togetherness, the pleasure of taste, and the balance between human beings and products of nature” and instructs that it should include, “the purchase of good, preferably local products whose flavors go well together; the paring of food with wine; the setting of a beautiful table; and specific actions during consumption, such as smelling and tasting items at the table.” And it doesn’t stop there but suggests aperitifs before dinner and digestives after, at which point you may be thinking either: “driver” or “nap.” So there you have it, the French gastronomic meal is now an intrinsic part of the world’s intangible heritage. Who’d have thought? Well, apart from the French ... Perhaps no other beverage more than wine offers such complimentary tangible and intangible pleasure. This month, to aid in your practice of the leisurely gastronomic meal, try one of the following wines chosen for their very intangible and somewhat elusive qualities. Domaine Le Roc des Anges, Seqna

While I consider wine a pleasure, I consider the experience of sharing wine with friends or family over a home cooked meal a joy. I love the taste of wine (pleasure) but the experience of uncorking a special bottle, whether that bottle be $10 or $50, and smelling it, sharing it, watching it change with food and evolve over time involves something more intangible. The sniffing, tasting and sharing may be the tangibles, but the emotions begin to slip into that nebulous other world much harder to pin down. You’re probably familiar with UNESCO World Heritage sites like Stonehenge or Easter Island, but did you know that the folks at UNESCO’S headquarters in Paris have also come up with a list of what they consider the world’s intangible heritage? Making the list are experiences like Mexico’s day of the Dead, Askiya, or the art of wit, and now, the French gastronomic meal―an activity described as “a social custom

de Cor, 2012 (organic) – From Roussillon, a region on France’s Mediterranean coast just before Spain, prized for its naturally fortified wines. Here, vines grow on terraces looking out to the sea, while receiving the soft, salty sea breezes. The name means “rock of the Angels” after a particular white quartz rock on the property out of which a single Carignan vine grew. A rich smooth, rich blend with notes of black raspberry. $24 I Custodi Pistus, Etna Rosse, 2012 (organic) – For millennia the vines of Mount Etna have been the central focus of the local farmers, but recently Etnean viticulture has caught the media’s attention. Perhaps it’s the special microclimate and mineral-rich volcanic soil that give the wines such uniqueness. Not unlike a forest that burns and renews itself, the lava flow both helps and causes suffering, but suffering is a stimulus: Not too sweet or overly concentrated, just great balance. Pistus is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, two grapes that tend toward scents of fresh cherries and roses, and have earned the reputation as being slightly Burgundian or Piedmontese. $24.99

A teacher was making cheese in a TEENY TINY TRAILER when Relay Foods helped her solve the FARM TO FORK riddle.

Jorge Hernandes walks the cows into the barn for the afternoon milking at Mountain View Farm Products in Fairfield. The Hugers are currently milking 75 cows on their 250 acre farm.

Christie Huger started making cheese eight years ago in an old school trailer on nights and weekends. She was a schoolteacher passionate about her family dairy farm with some free nights and weekends and a 150-gallon cheese vat. That was then; this is now: “I have a 5,000 pound cheese vat, which is about 581 gallons,” said Christie, who is has a few employees and is making cheese four to five times a week. “Now it’s a full time job.” In 2000, Christie and her husband, Fred, took over Mountain View Farm, a 250 acre dairy farm in Fairfield. Fred grew up on a farm, and even though the dairy farming business was new to Christie, she fell in love with it almost right away. “I’m working more and my hours are longer, but it’s different,” she said.

Fred Huger sharpens a chain saw in preparation for clearing fence lines. he and his wife, Christie (opposite), have been producing cheese on their farm since 2006.

“You’re working for yourself so you feel like you’re building equity in your farm. I also like the fact that it makes me a little bit more flexible to do things with my children. I can do field trips or be there to pick them up and do things with them and I like that.” continued on page 14

JOHN ROBINSON/RELAY FOODS

When the Hugers took over the dairy farm in 2000, the price of milk was (as it always is) fluctuating. Christie was still teaching and her three kids were still just a glint in her eye, but she ended up taking a class in Floyd County to learn how to make cheese and butter at home to supplement the income from the farm. “We started doing stuff as inexpensively as I could,” she said. But the cheese-making quickly became a main source of income for the farm, not to mention something that Christie loved doing. “I took a leave of absence from my job and then I took another year. At the end of the second year I sent in my Dear John letter and quit my job altogether and we built a new facility.” These days Mountain View Farm Products produces a variety of cheeses (including cheddar, gouda, colby, baby swiss, jack, feta, and mozzarella) as well as fresh butter, which they sell at three farmers markets, directly to customers at their farm store, and through distributors into grocery stores and restaurants. But one of their longest lasting relationships has been with local online grocer Relay Foods.

“We started with Relay when we were still making cheese in the trailer,” said Christie. “As we’ve grown, Relay’s also grown. It’s been a good growth together.” continued on page 16

Relay Foods is a grocery store based out of Charlottesville that specializes in local and organic produce, gourmet edibles, and specialty foods. There’s no annual commitment like a CSA, and unlike a trip to the farmer’s market, you can order national brands and non-edibles, like trash bags and laundry detergent. Customers order online and then the groceries are delivered directly to their doorsteps (if they’re in the delivery zone) or to a pre-determined pick-up location. “The idea is that everything is moving online,” said Grisha Kramer, the Local Market Manager in Charlottesville. “Groceries is one of the last holdovers, but online grocery shopping is really common in places like England. in the local food aspect: Relay Foods is not just online groceries, but online groceries and farmers markets: you can buy bulk farm beef, you can buy confectioners sugar, you can buy dish soap, you can buy food from local artisans. And it’s much faster than the grocery store.” Relay Foods takes pride in its local producers, like Christie and Mountain View Farm Products, and makes sure to pay them accordingly. “We pay our producers 60 cents on the dollar, which is a pretty good margin,” said Grisha. “They get the best margin at the farmers market, of course, but up until we existed, whatever you couldn’t sell there you had to sell to a distributor which is more like 10-20 cents.”

Grisha’s favorite thing about the Relay model, though, is the food and the community that comes from it. “I think local food is one idea that’s actually such a good idea because it’s apolitical,” he said. “Food travels less far, so it’s fresher. Money stays in your local economy and helps out people next to you. And a lot of the food is just better.” Christie agrees. She said the best thing about working with Relay is that your neighbors are getting your products. “With distributors, they’re just selling to everybody and you have no idea where it is,” she said. “When I sell to Relay, it’s going to individuals.” BRL

Identifying with home buyers and sellers

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

As reported last month, the Nelson County real estate market continues to face some challenges. With inventory of homes for sale remaining relatively high at 318 homes currently for sale, compared to 328 this time last year, buyers need to navigate through their options and sellers must position their property to stand out in the competition. Statistical findings from the 2014 National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers may help market participants better understand one another and develop a more customer centric approach to buying and selling. Here are the report highlights. Characteristics of Home Buyers; 8 in 10 buyers believe their home is a good financial investment and 40% believe it is better than stocks; 33% of all home buyers were first-time buyers which is down 5% from a year ago; the median age of

the first time buyer was 31 compared to 53 for the repeat buyer; 65% of buyers were married; 13% of buyers purchased a multi-generational home due to cost savings with adult children or aging parents moving in; buyers expect to live in their home for 12 years. Characteristics of Homes Purchased; the typical home purchased was 1,870 sq ft with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; 79% of buyers purchased a detached single-family home; new homes accounted for 16% of sales; the main factors influencing location choice were quality of neighborhood, convenience to job, and overall affordability of homes. The Home Search Process; 92% of home buyers used the Internet and 50% used a mobile website or application; 43% of buyers started their home search process by looking at properties online; buyers searched an average of 10 weeks (compared to 12

Marlo Allen

weeks the previous year) and viewed 10 homes. Home Buying and Real Estate Professionals; 88% of buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent; 40% of buyers found their agent through a referral from a friend or family member and 12% used an agent that they had previously used. Financing the Home Purchase; 88% of buyers financed their home purchase and on average borrowed 90% of the purchase price; 26% reported the loan process to be somewhat more difficult than expected and 18% said it was much more difficult than expected. Characteristics of Home Sellers; The typical seller lived in their home for 10 years (back in 2007 the typical tenure was only 6 years.); 17% of sellers have had to delay selling because the value of the home is less than the amount mortgaged; sellers typically sold their home for 97% of

434-996-3525

list price and 45% reported at least one price reduction; 36% of sellers offered buyers incentives such as home warranty or closing costs. Home Selling and Real Estate Professionals; 88% of sellers were assisted by a real estate agent; 38% of sellers found their agent through a referral by friends or family; 22% used an agent that they previously worked with to buy or sell; 70% of home sellers only interviewed one agent prior to listing. Understanding the market participants can lead to a more successful buying and selling experience!

STUARTS DRAFT

[ augusta county ]

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

When Terry quit driving trucks for a living, he went

OFF THE HOOK Terry Caricofe spent the first half of his adult life driving trucks for his food distribution company. As he logged those miles, he collected recipes from all over the state. “I heard about people doing this, that, and the other - different recipes,” said Terry. “I got a recipe for my cornbread from out in Bath County. This lady here did taco taters and I’ve never heard of them but once I tried one, it was great. I get all of my recipes from my travels, and some from my mom. Like my cinnamon biscuits – I got that recipe watching mom.” Terry’s gathered up all those recipes and closed down the distribution business to focus on his new passion: serving up homemade Cajun and southern food at Off the Hook Cafe in Stuarts Draft. continued on page 26

ADVERTORIAL

Know How Your Assets are Titled By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC

How an asset is titled will determine who gets that asset when you die – even if your Last Will says something entirely different. Since titling of an asset will determine ownership of that asset upon death, a close examination of titling is essential to make sure your estate planning goals are met. Some common types of title are briefly explained below. Sole ownership is the simplest of the ownership types, as it is simply property with a single owner. The sole owner may make a Last Will & Testament or a Trust directing the asset to anyone they wish upon their death. However, a serious problem may exist if an asset is titled solely in a person’s name and that person is married. The spouse of that person may or may not have a full claim to that property upon the death of the sole owner. This is a common problem in second marriage situations and should be considered carefully. Tenants by the Entirety is a common way for married people to own real estate together in Virginia. In addition to certain advantages during life, upon the death of the first spouse, there is normally no probate and the surviving spouse will retain full ownership of the property. The classification of the property may also change for capital gains tax purposes if the surviving spouse then decides to sell the property later. Upon the death of the first spouse, the property loses its classification as tenants by the entirety and becomes the solely owned property of the surviving spouse. Joint Tenants with Right of Survivorship, often simply referred to as “joint tenants”, usually exists in Virginia between non-married people. There may be more than two parties in a joint tenancy; I have seen as many six joint tenant owners on a single piece of property! When a joint tenant dies, that person’s interest in the property simply transfers to the surviving joint tenants. The last surviving joint tenant will eventually own the asset completely. If there were only two joint tenants, then upon the death of the first owner, the other owner will become the sole owner of the property. I usually see this when a parent adds a child to a bank account, inadvertently creating a jointly owned account with that child. When the parent dies, the child owns the account, no matter what the parent’s Last Will may say! Tenants in Common is a way for multiple individuals to own property wherein each owner’s interest does not extinguish upon death. It is similar to solely owned property in that each owner may do whatever they like with their share of the property in life and at death they can leave their share in the property to anyone they wish. The other owners of the property do not automatically receive the share of the deceased owner, as is the case in joint tenancy (above). Property titled this way can create challenges for the other owners, since they do not usually have any control or influence over who the new owners might be. Improper titling can have serious implications upon death. A discussion about how your assets are titled and the impact upon your estate planning goals should be discussed with an estate planning attorney you trust.

Terry’s mom passed away when he was 12 years old, so he started cooking young, but didn’t become passionate about it until much later in life. “I didn’t cook big meals like that. It was pretty much when we wanted something to eat we had to make it,” he said. “We usually just made something quick and easy. I guess that’s why I like cooking now.” Off the Hook Cafe is just a tiny brick drive-through with Terry inside, cooking, cleaning, taking orders, serving customers, and inventing new recipes – usually all at the same time. But he says it has never felt like work and he’s surprised (but proud) of how successful his little restaurant has become in such a short time (he just opened full time on January 2). He knows it’s his food that has people coming back and he’s not surprised that people love it. A bacon sandwich at Off the Hook isn’t just a couple slices of bacon on a biscuit, like you might get at some other drive-through establishments. “When I do my bacon sandwiches, I put 4 or 5 pieces of thick bacon on it. It’s the best bacon out there. Around town, I’d have people pulling up asking for ‘one of them bacon sandwiches,’” said Terry, who’s other top-seller is the BBQ chicken with his Kickin’ Sauce. “Last Saturday I did 70 half chickens and sold out by lunchtime. It is unreal.” Off the Hook Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch Monday to Saturday. There’s no website (but there is a huge following on Facebook) and no place to sit inside. It’s just great food - everything from alligator and crawfish to meatloaf and biscuits and gravy - served by a great guy with a great collection of recipes. And that cornbread from Bath County? “It’s just about the best cornbread I’ve ever had,” said Terry. “A friend of mine came down and got some and gave it to her husband and he said it was the best he ever had. She came back and bought three or four more loaves.” BRL

One of the best things about living in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains is how quiet it can be. But when there are groceries to buy and children to herd and chores to do, a trip to the library can be perpetually pushed off to tomorrow. And for grown-up and little readers alike, a new book is sometimes just absolutely needed today. And that’s where the Little Free Library comes into play. “It’s actually a movement that’s happening all around the country,” explained Sandy Gallagher, the person behind the Afton Little Free Library. “It started with a young boy who decided he had a lot of books and he should give them away, so his dad made him a little box, much like a postal box, and he put it out on his street with a sign that said ‘Little Free Library’ and people could take a book and leave a book with no obligations.” Sandy loved the idea and brought it up to the Afton Book Club (Also known as the ABC. Ha!). Everyone was immediately on board, so Sandy bought a book case at an old consignment shop, got permission from the Postmistress in Afton to create the library in the post office (she belongs to a book club, too!) and made a little sign. “I found a neat little bookcase and I thought it would work in the post office,” said Sandy, who thought that since so many people go into the post office every day, the location was perfect for a Little Free Library. “But now the Postmistress tells us people are coming in just to get a book, never mind to buy stamps. People are coming in to just leave some books. It’s a success!” Everyone in the Afton Book Club has donated a few books to the library (and most have taken a few off the shelf, too). The idea of sharing books just comes naturally to many voracious readers. “It’s a great place to share your books with people,” said Mary Dudley Eggleston, a member of the Afton Book Club. “It’s just sort of a sense of community … books are warm and welcoming and they make you feel like home.” Ann Miller-Wachtel said she definitely agrees and loves having a Little Library closer to home than some of the (certainly much bigger) public libraries. “Even if you don’t know who brought the books or who’s taking the books, it’s sharing because we’re a

community,” said Ann. “I have a lot of books that I’d read before. I thought I’d pass them on to somebody, but why do you have to know someone to pass them a book? You can just take it down to the post office and somebody will pick it up and hopefully they’ll pass it on. How many times do you read a book more than once?” Even more than a sense of community, Sandy is proud that the new Little Free Library (or LFL, for short) is instilling a sense of literacy. “So often now, people get so used to their videos and their machines and their laptops and their tablets that to read a book - a real book - is something that might not be around forever, and I think it’s a lost art. This stimulates some reading and some good books,” she said. “It doesn’t cost anything. You don’t have to sign any papers. It’s just a pleasant little piece of Americana.” BRL

STORYTELLER New documentary centers on Nelson County native Earl Hamner. STORY by WOODY GREENBERG

Ray Castro of Boonton, New Jersey, grew up watching The Waltons in the 1970’s and like many kids then, just wished he could have been a member or neighbor of the Walton clan. Now he’s about to unveil Earl Hamner Storyteller, a documentary he has co-produced about the creator of The Waltons. It’s the culmination of a dream that has led him to produce numerous Waltons-related events. “Never could I have imagined that one day I would be organizing a Waltons Cruise to the Caribbean, hosting Richard Thomas’ 47th birthday party in Hartford, CT., a Waltons Mothers Day reunion with Patricia Neal and Michael Learned in New Jersey, producing both The Homecoming & Waltons 40th Anniversary reunions in New Jersey and LA and now this documentary film,” he says. “ I owe it all to Mary McDonough (Erin on The Waltons) for giving me my first opportunity, to the cast for always supporting and believing in me, and to Earl for giving a boy from New Jersey the moral guidance of his family and to live out his dream of being a Walton.” Castro initially had the idea for Earl Hamner Storyteller when he watched the Entertainment Weekly segment on ABC’s Good Morning America. “I noticed that Earl was there but was placed in the back and wasn’t even acknowledged. That bothered me immensely because without Earl Hamner and his family, The Waltons would never have been.”

Leslie Winston (opposite, left) who played ‘Cindy’ on The Waltons, and Kami Cotler who was ‘Elizabeth’ In the series, join Waltons creator Earl Hamner, Jr. in Los Angeles for a private screening of Earl Hamner Storyteller. The documentary is nearing a final cut and will be submitted to film festivals and pitched to networks and distributors.

RAY CASTRO

A few days later, Michael McGreevey had visited Earl’s boyhood home in Schuyler, VA. McGreevey, a writer, producer and actor whose father John had been one of the chief writers for The Waltons, shared on Facebook how his visit there had really humbled him. “All the stories he heard growing up when Earl would vacation with his father and the family, now all made sense. I was moved by Michael’s post and immediately called him with the idea,” Castro remembers. “Mike loved the idea and was actually contemplating retiring, but decided that this film would be his swan song if Earl would agree.” Castro also hooked up with Tim McAbee, whose company First Class Productions is based in Tennessee and books primarily classic country artists for a yearly concert series. “I first met Tim 16 years ago. At the time he was producing reunion events that featured cast members from The Andy Griffith Show. Tim and I first met at a performance where Don Knotts and Tim Conway performed together. I was happy to reconnect with him in 2011 for The Homecoming reunion in New Jersey. I admired Tim’s professionalism, eye for detail and complete honesty. I knew then that he was a person that I wanted to work with. Since then, our friendship and business relationship has grown and led to our next event which was The Waltons 40th Anniversary Reunion in Los Angeles and now the Earl Hamner Storyteller documentary film.”

A private screening was held in early February back in Los Angeles where Hamner has lived since the late 1960’s. “All of the people that have worked with Earl, his family, his friends, his neighbors. They all came out in gratitude for all that he has given us. When the movie was over everyone waited for the very last credit to be shown before they all got up and gave him a standing ovation. At this point Scott, his son, turned him around where he could face the audience and helped him stand up and he was just so touched by it. He just started blowing kisses and thanking everybody in the audience. Very moving. I’ll never forget that moment,” Castro continued. A portion of Earl Hamner Storyteller was shot in Schuyler in April. “It was exciting to film in Schuyler,” Hamner says, “not only for its sentimental value but to discover Schuyler is coming alive again.” The documentary includes a church service at Schuyler Baptist Church that featured Jimmy Fortune, Nelson County’s other nationally-famous native son, singing old hymns accompanied by members of both Hamner’s and Fortune’s family. “Tim has worked with Jimmy in the past and originally invited him to be a part of The Waltons 40th Anniversary Reunion in LA. When we began working on the documentary, Tim noted all the connections with Earl and Jimmy being from Nelson County and the fact that Jimmy co-wrote a song with Justin Peters called Virginia Dreams.

Tim asked Jimmy if he would be a part of this film honoring Earl. I must say this was a brilliant idea because it has been one of the highlights for me,” says Castro. The production crew also filmed Hamner at the old Alberene soapstone quarry, where his father and grandfather had worked. “Just to be in the same building where my grandfather polished stone and my uncle, a carpenter, had boxed up the stone for shipping, well, it was a very personal trip back,” Hamner says. Other scenes were shot in the old Schuyler Hospital, now a residence, and the old Schuyler School, now a community center and home to “The Waltons Mountain Museum.” It was a busy threeday schedule that left Hamner wishing he had had more time. “I wanted to visit the old spring box and the creek where I was baptized, but we didn’t get there.” “At 91, to have such a tribute brought to your attention…well, writers usually are kept in the background. I’ve been lucky enough to function in several areas, drama, soap opera, biographies,” Hamner says of the documentary. Indeed, Hamner’s credits as the author of a number of books also extends to three screenplays, Spencer’s Mountain, Palm Spring Weekend, and Charlotte’s Web, and at least 15 teleplays, eight of them episodes of The Twilight Zone, a series that ranks with The Waltons for its lasting popularity and impact on television history. He also produced the long running series Falcon Crest, as well as Apple’s Way and Boone. The list of actors and family members interviewed for the documentary is extensive. It includes Richard Thomas, Michael Learned, all the actors who played the Walton kids, as well as Earl’s siblings, his daughter and son Caroline and Scott Hamner, Susan Sullivan, Lorenzo Lamas, Mary Badham, Bill Mumy, Veronica Cartwright, Ronny Cox, Jimmy Fortune, Jan Smithers, David Selby, Vince Van Patten, Charlotte Stewart, Morgan Woodward, Belinda Montgomery, Ronnie Claire Edwards, “just to name a few,” says Castro. And the Hamner legacy? “Earl senior and Doris Hamner gave the world a great gift in Earl Hamner Jr.,” Castro says. “His ability of putting pencil to paper and sharing his family and stories is his legacy.” Whether it was a boy in New Jersey escaping for an hour every Thursday night for a sense of family, or a family overseas longing for the American dream, Earl Hamner and The Waltons brought the world into their homes and then bade them “Good-Night!” Soon, a documentary will remind us of the power of those dreams. The Devil is in the ‘Stone’ Detail For years my company has been involved in stone projects – patios, walls, chimneys, fire pits and outdoor kitchens. During the course of that time, you begin to develop many styles, details and ‘eye candy’ that often go overlooked as even being an option. However, it is these options that truly set apart a stone project – taking it from a mere ‘oh’, to an ‘ahhhh!’ The best part is that some of these options often add nothing to the bottom line. The patio floor stone is typically just an option of either patterned (squares/rectangles) or irregular in shape. However, the patio that blends a stone that is used in vertical work as a 12-16-inch outline outside of the patio, walk or landing can truly add a level of detail that can draw the eye down a walk, to the center of a large patio or encapsulate a landing near a driveway. Near driveways, these 3-6 inch thick stones aid in ‘locking’ the landing bluestone thereby allowing for that occasional UPS tire that drifts from driveway to patio/landing with no ill effects. Our sitting wall ‘cap’ or top typically has a 2-inch overhang and is constructed of a more flat stone, like bluestone, to serve both to hide the joint where the vertical work of the wall meets the horizontal work of the sitting wall and is nicer to sit since it has less cleft or irregularities, respectively. Typically the thickness of this cap should be around 1 ¼+ inches in thickness. Recently a client asked if we could design a lip or ledge that would hold a seat cushion in place on the sitting wall around a patio. The end result was a 6-inch extension added to the back of the wall (of the vertical stone) and an added ledge to the front of the wall capped by bluestone to maintain a 20-inch seat. The end detail served the utilitarian purpose sought after and added a

level of aesthetic detail to the sitting wall that we had never done before. In reference to the sitting wall or even retaining walls in general, the addition of columns adds a level of height and detail that elevates the overall attractiveness of the wall. The construction of such a column can be done in a number of ways but our signature column is 4 inches thicker than our wall (2 added inches on both the inside and outside of the wall), has a 1 ¼+ inch cap of bluestone on it and is 1 foot taller than the wall. The end result adds detail, a touch of height that does not overwhelm the wall and a lighting opportunity that really takes the party into the night. Of course the cap for the column can also be a stone cap like what was used in the construction of the column. We use a 2-inch tall by 2-inch deep lip on columns if we use the same stone as we used in the vertical work (very similar to the bluestone dimensions). Fire pits and chimneys have so much opportunity for detail, I could write a separate article on each. The bottom line is that both will be eye candy for over 90 percent of their life – yeah, just objects you look at and, hopefully, admire instead of actually use. For that reason a tremendous amount of time and planning should be placed in mantels, caps, shoulders and other aspects of fire pits and chimneys so that their visual statement is strong no matter if they are blazing or softly coated in snow. Particular attention should be paid to fire pits which traditionally are very 2-dimensional – mostly a circle of stones with a pit in the middle. Functional? Yes. Aesthetically pleasing? Not even close. My take is to merge a round fire pit with a straight (or even curved) wall that is 3 times taller than the fire pit walls ending in a modified ‘P’ shape. Now the fire pit offers vertical height and eye candy whether burning, smoldering or stone cold…

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I took a flu shot this year and still got the flu. Why would I ever take it again! It is very frustrating to get vaccinated and still get influenza, but that happened a lot this year. The viruses in the yearly vaccine are chosen many months in advance so the vaccine will be ready. The vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that are expected that year. Flu viruses change constantly so there is always the possibility of an incorrect match between circulating viruses and the vaccine. This year one strain of circulating flu viruses is different than the vaccine virus. However, the vaccine should work well against 1/3 of this strain of virus. It’s important to remember that the flu vaccine contains three or four flu viruses so that even when there is a lower effectiveness against one virus, the vaccine may protect against the others. It’s possible to get sick with the flu even if you have been vaccinated with an effective vaccine. It takes about 2 weeks to develop protection

after vaccination and you may be exposed to a flu virus in this period. And not everyone gets the same protection from the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine works best among healthy younger adults and older children. During seasons when there is a less than ideal match it is still important for everyone 6 months and older to get flu shots. Getting a yearly flu shot can protect you, as well as those around you. Children less than 6 months of age are at high risk of complications from the flu but cannot get the flu shot. But vaccinated family members can reduce their risk of exposure to influenza. You can also reduce the risk of grandparents getting exposed to the flu. This year the flu shot was about 33% effective against the most common strain of the flu. This may not be great, but not getting the flu shot gives 0% protection. I encourage you to get your yearly shot. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Exercise with a Purpose There are all sorts of exercisers and the type you are may coincide with your personality type and that is fine. What is important is that you have a purpose and goal for each workout and that you use the time constructively. Many people make the mistake of doing long low intensity workouts that consume a lot of time and they see little results. Eventually, they become bored with their routine and stop exercising. Working with a personal trainer to establish parameters and exercise intensity can be very useful. The body adapts to activities so if you have been doing the same routine for six months, a year, two years or more; the chances of you getting the maximum benefit from your routine are not great. For example, three days a week you may choose to work on cardiovascular training. Do you choose the treadmill, bike, elliptical, or walk/run outdoors. Does it depend on weather? Will you be doing a long or short workout? Will you be doing interval training? Will you mix in core exer-

cises with your interval training? Take your strength program. There are so many options: free weights, core exercises, closed chain kinetic exercises, stacked weight systems, tubing, exercise balls, TRX system. Will you be working on legs, arms, back, abdominals? Or a combination? It is helpful to keep a work out log. There are many apps, devices and programs to keep track of workouts depending on how much you want to invest. However, it can be as simple as writing a brief note on the calendar. Reviewing your workouts so you can change the routine improves strength and stamina. The demands on your time are significant so get to the gym, stay focused and then get on with enjoying your day!
