from

thepublishers With the recent rash of dogs and grandparents dying, Peyton’s gotten quite pensive lately. Who will take care of me and Adam if you and daddy die? Can I take my ponies with me to heaven? Is it dark in the grave? I don’t want to die because I love my farm and my room and my things. These questions don’t creep me out but I wasn’t expecting them to come from a five year-old. I answered them as best as I could. The next week, her line of questioning changed. If I have babies, where will they sleep? “You and your husband will make a home and you’ll find a place that’s cozy for them,” I told her. I want five babies. And I hope my husband has a bunk bed because I’ve never slept on a top bunk before. Mental note: Forget the coffee maker wedding gift. Spring for the bunk bed. “Muffins! I want muffins!” Adam shouted as he bounced into the kitchen and saw a spread of ingredients laid out on the table. “What’s that?!” Peyton asked, pointing at the jar of Cheese Whiz. “It’s poison,” I told her. “But it’s

in your grandma’s recipe for Sausage Bites.” (Turn to page 31 if you can read cursive). “It looks like peanut butter!” she noted, as Tommy scooped some out and started mashing it into a bowl of browned sausage. I slit the English muffins in half and started spreading the sausageCheese Whiz mixture over them. Almost in unison, the kids asked to have their English muffins plain, without the spread. “Want one?” Tommy asked through a mouthful? This is when adoring wives smile nice and wide, nod and say “No, thank you.” They’ll taste better in heaven.

Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford MARCH 2016 Blue Ridge LIFE

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Biodynamic wines The earth has music for those who listen. Remember the Bionic Woman? If you were born after 1978, you’re too young. Protagonist, Jamie Sommers (Lindsay Wagner) put her bionically built body to work for the good of the country, and for much too long a time afterward, whenever I heard the term biodynamic, my mind was inclined to think of some form of bionic do-gooding. Only now do I see that perhaps the do-gooding part was valid, for biodynamic agriculture does do us good on many levels. Biodynamy is the oldest organic agriculture movement dating from 1920s and the philosophy of Rudolph Steiner. It’s a holistic approach that looks beyond the vine and its profit to the land, even the cosmos, in a concept of interconnectedness and respect that encourages biodiversity, and works with nature not against it. When it comes to biodynamic wines, sometimes I think it’s only the name that puts people off. That, and the

usual demon of what we don’t understand, we tend to misunderstand and fear. Planting in harmony with nature not only makes beautiful sense, but it seems also common sense that we treat the vines, trees or plants and their soil with respect. When we do, they thrive. But the proof is in the wine. In the wine business what matters is taste. Do you like it or not? When asked if I believe in biodynamic wines, my answer is an emphatic yet conditional yes. I do seek out organic wines, for if we are what we eat and drink, then do we really want to be a bunch of pesticides? Still, if you don’t like the taste of a wine, no amount of chemical-free grape juice will convince you to buy. I can’t force you to believe in biodynamy, but maybe your conscience or taste buds can. Smell, taste, then savour. And keep an open mind. Remember, once we all believed the earth was flat and the sun revolved around it. In the end, what is perhaps most magical about wine is that it’s alive, and it continues to evolve in the bottle, even more so when poured

and shared. It’s about the pleasure wine offers, which is as different for each wine as it is for each gullet guzzling. I mean tasting. Guillemot-Michel, Viré-Clessé, 2014 (biodynamic) – Viré-Clessé is an appellation in France’s Mâconnais, which is known for steely, lighter whites. Guillemot-Michel’s wines are superlative examples of what the Chardonnay grape is capable of producing when treated with respect. Husband and wife, Marc and Pierette, both oenologists, grow biodynamically and when I first tasted this wine years ago, I couldn’t quite believe I was tasting Chardonnay from the Mâconnais, so fragrant and fruit-driven is their the wine. Notes of passion fruit, pineapple, white peach, lime and honey. $36.99 Pont de Gassac, Mas de Daumas Gassac, 2014 (biodynamic) – Called the Lafite of the Languedoc, Daumas Gassac’s high-end wines wear big price tags, but the Pont de Gassac offers not only great fruit (think blueberries, raspberries, and spice) but also great value. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. $15.99

But instead of filling them with colored plastic eggs and jellybeans, he filled them with eggs from his farm that just happen to be beautifully – and naturally – multi-colored. “About three years ago, I saw a picture of a green chicken egg on the internet and I thought, ‘How in the Hell does someone do that?” said Paul. “And that’s how I really got started breeding birds in earnest for the aesthetic beauty of the chicken eggs.” From the obvious colors (like white and brown) to the more rare (like a glossy gold, a matte pink, and an olive green), Paul’s chickens’ eggs really span the rainbow, which is why he sells them not as “cartons,” but as “palettes.” Paul’s been a self-proclaimed backyard chicken hobbyist since the early 2000s. But after 15 years with just 15-20 birds, he decided it was time to grow the flock. So in May of 2014, he started building. First a new coop and then a 5,000 square foot pen, breeding pens and a 300 square foot dusting pit. And then an automated watering system so he wouldn’t have to carry enough water for 200 birds every single day. But after living with his pet chickens for so long, Paul wasn’t ready to treat his newest chicks and anything less than the feathery friends they are. “My chickens have always been pets,” said Paul, who was an engineer with Apple for many years before becoming a registered nurse and then a semi-retired chicken hobbyist. “People who have backyard flocks, we know their names and personalities and know when they’re doing well. That aspect never changed for me. These are still my pets.” These days, all of his birds are banded and identified, but even still about 100 have names and all of them have personalities – like Rob, who was born with a defective eye and no depth perception.

“He had no feathers so I started calling him Zombie and that turned into Rob Zombie which just became Rob,” said Paul. “And that bird will chase me down as I walk across the yard. He adores me.” And the feeling is mutual. “I love everything about my birds,” he said. “The interactions and politics between the chickens - you’re watching these little baby dinosaurs do their thing!” Paul just started peddling his palettes at farmers’ markets and a few local spots, but he’s been gifting eggs to neighbors and selling directly from his farm for quite a bit longer, including to folks like Max Trombly. Max and his wife met Paul while hiking the Appalachian Trail and staying at the chicken farm while it was just getting started. “I was just incredibly impressed,” said Max, who calls himself a local foodie. “It’s just the most beautiful place. If I was a chicken living in that place, I would be the happiest chicken in the world - although I guess I don’t know if chickens appreciate mountain views.” Max said that in addition to the views, he loves being able to see the chickens - Paul welcomes customers at his farm - and how they can roam free through Paul’s 11 acres. “Seeing happy chickens roaming around was a big part of what impacted me and made me say I wanted to support this kind of business,” said Max, who eats eggs almost every day and buys 4-6 pallets at a time from Paul. “And I think one of the things that draws me to him is that Paul is such an enthusiastic guy and he’s so passionate. I try to seek out people who are passionate about their art, their craft, their livelihood.” Plus, says Max, the eggs are gorgeous. “Everything Paul’s ever handed me has been perfect and just wonderful.” BRL

Carl Gardner says art is his way of communicating, and with close to 90 paintings hanging in his tiny cabin in Tye River, there’s a lot of chatter. “I like painting realistic things with a little twist to them here or there,” Gardner said. His art is inspired by his every day encounters and the walls of his home are covered with landscapes and portraits of all sizes. It’s not that Gardner couldn’t get rid of his paintings, plenty of people would like to buy them, but Gardner just doesn’t want to sell. “I feel as if they are all my children. That’s one reason why I’m not crazy about selling them because I’m attached to all of them,” Gardner said. “As time goes by, I get more and more attached.”

Gardner made a living as a beekeeper in Nelson County but says he “got too old for that.” Now the 84-year-old focuses on his art. His honey house has been transformed into his painting workshop, where he spends most of his time. Gardner paints with acrylic and oils and dabbled recently in pastels. He sketches each idea on masonite and then paints it. Some pieces take a few weeks to complete, others take a few years. Gardner has also experimented with stained glass. “I look at stained glass as a way of painting with light,” he said. “You’re always keeping in mind the light that comes in the back.” Gardner said the texture and transparency of the stained glass work is a challenge he embraces. Along with his dozens of paintings hanging in his house, Gardner has about ten stained glass windows. Through a fellow stained glass artist, Gardner met Christi Saunders in 2014. “He has an incredible imagination,” Saunders said. “He gets up and goes into the shop and the way he talks about his work, he talks about all of his pieces like he has a relationship with them.” Saunders joins Gardner in his former honey-house turned workshop to paint. Gardner made her an easel and brush holder to use and Saunders paints in an old beekeeping apron of his. “I couldn’t believe in this teeny little cabin in the woods of Nelson there were all these beautiful works of art,” Saunders said. “All of them have a story. He has something to say about all of them and he cared about all of them.” All of the storytelling on the walls of the Gardner home can make things crowded. Gardner said his wife wishes he would get rid of a few of his paintings. “But she humors me and lets me keep them.” BRL

Interesting facts for Wintergreen Resort

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Sometimes you live in a special place, but don’t truly appreciate how special it is. We may get so accustomed to the beauty (and offerings) around us that we take it for granted… until it gets recognized as one of “The Coolest Places on Earth!” Wintergreen Resort was just featured on the television show, The Coolest Places on Earth, which highlighted the best skiing and mountain retreats on earth. If you missed the segment, all you have to do is visit a Facebook page of any proud local and you will probably find the shared link. If you want to explore a little more, here are a few interesting facts for Wintergreen Resort. (Information from WintergreenResort.com) Overview: Wintergreen Resort is a four-season mountain retreat on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Wintergreen logo is a rendering of the wintergreen plant known as the Teaberry or Checker-

berry; when pinched, the plant has a distinct wintergreen fragrance. Location: Situated on 11,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains southwest of Charlottesville and minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Wintergreen Mountain Village is located on two mountains – Devils Knob and Black Rock Mountain. Black Rock Mountain is named for the granite outcrops most prevalent on the mountain’s southern side. Devils Knob most likely got its name from a nearby mountain pass known as Devil’s Gate. The dangerously tight pass existed before the parkway was built and posed a risk for travelers and early settlers. At an elevation of nearly 4,000 ft, the resort is bounded on two sides by the George Washington National Forest. Snowsports: Wintergreen offers skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing, and ice skating. There are 24 slopes

from beginner to expert terrain; 14 slopes lighted for night skiing. The Plunge is a 900 ft multi-lane snowtubing hill. The automated snowmaking system involves 40,000 linear ft of pipeline, 400+ snowguns, and 45 weather stations. Theoretically with optimal conditions, the system could blanket a football field with over 50 ft of snow in just 24 hours. Golf & Tennis: Wintergreen has multiple golf courses rated among Virginia’s top courses. The Devils Knob Golf Course, designed by Ellis Maples, is the highest in Virginia at 3,850 ft with 50-mile views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valleys. The Stoney Creek Golf Course, designed by Rees Jones, is a Par-72 course with 27 holes. The tennis facilities and academies are nationally recognized and consist of 22 courts - 15 outdoor mountaintop courts, 3 indoor courts, and 4 poolside courts in the valley.

434-996-3525

Additional Recreation: Hiking – 30 miles of marked hiking trails thread through the resort with connections to the Appalachian Trail. Lake Monocan Park – 20 acre lake in Stoney Creek. Discovery Ridge – adrenaline-pumping activities with bungee, trampoline, and climbing walls. The Spa at Wintergreen – therapeutic massages and treatments. Aquatics & Fitness – indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, exercise facility, and more. Wintergreen offers many opportunities to come join the fun. Cole Chambers-Smithson may be a fourth grader, but he’s also a businessman. The nine-year-old is the sole owner and operator of Cole’s Hot Cocoa & Coffee. His mom, Nikki, helped him build the stand on the front porch of the Ski Barn in Beech Grove last winter and business has been booming ever since. The steady stream of customers renting gear from the Ski Barn on their way up to Wintergreen Resort can stop to grab a cup of coffee or cocoa from Cole. It’s the best deal in town, as Cole only charges $0.75 a cup. On a good day, Cole says he will make about $50. On a great day, he will net $100. Cole’s mom has managed the Ski Barn for the past 15 years, which means Cole has spent a lot of his time hanging out at the store. “He’s stuck at work with me so I built it for him,” Nikki said.

Nestled on a private wooded lot on one of the most scenic holes of the golf course, well set back from the street and the course for privacy. HOME AGAIN Janice R. Stafford November 20, 1933 – January 23, 2016

Indulge me for a few minutes. I think what you will read here might help. Especially if you are facing losing someone close to you. I walked away from this experience less afraid, more centered and proud I’d stayed the course to the end. I’ve contemplated for weeks now what exactly I’d write as an epilogue to the past several days since my mother’s death back in Northwest Tennessee in late January. As many of you know, the past six months have been quite a ride: I lost my dad in August 2015 and I feared it wouldn’t be long before my mom went as well. When you’ve spent more than 60 years together, it’s understandable that you’d want to leave together. The most recent journey started with a phone call from my sister, who said that I might want to head back home to West Tennessee. My mother had already been through hip surgery twice in one month and, amazingly for an 82-year-old, had done just fine. And it wasn’t her hip that ended up being too much; it was a rupture in her intestines that was the final blow. After the previous surgeries, mom was tired – plain and simple. She didn’t want surgery again and I couldn’t blame her. She said if antibiotics didn’t work (and they rarely cure this sort of problem) then that would be that. I drove all day and into the night that Tuesday to stay ahead of approaching winter weather. I drove through some of it in Western Kentucky, but pushed on so I could be there the next morning. My mother was still fairly with it and she was so glad to see me. Right when I saw her, the tiredness of the 11 hour drive seemed to fade away. We laughed and talked. She told me of her decision not to have the surgery. Four powerful antibiotics were coursing through her body as a last-ditch effort for beating the developing infection. For two days, lab results stayed stable, but on the third, a clear indication came that the infection was winning. The doctor told mom to prepare for the end and she was ready; she had written out a do not resuscitate order years ago and she was tired of fighting. 30

MARCH 2016

Our conversations switched to the type of funeral she wanted. Surprisingly she didn’t want the ceremony to be held at the church; a simple graveside service was all she needed. (Though we ended up having a small service at the chapel in the funeral home so that her older, more fragile friends who couldn’t make a graveside could come.) I spent the next three nights in my mother’s room at the hospital. The first two, she more or less slept. She was on some pain meds, but nothing excessive. Occasionally awaking as the nurses came and went, I watched the snow and ice fall in Tennessee that would eventually become Winter Storm Jonas, the big blizzard that hit the majority of the east coast. Back home, Yvette had already prepared for the storm at our Virginia farmhouse with our two children. She was ready. And though I hated to leave her and the kids at such a time, I knew that beside mom was exactly where I needed to be. Though none of us expected it to be so soon – she had just entered hospice care in her same room that afternoon – that third night would be her last. I arrived late in the day, as I usually did. I sat with her for a few hours and then went for a brief supper break as she slept. My friend, Joe, picked me up at the hospital and we headed for the local Cracker Barrel. Joe warned me that the road to her death could be long. He’d watched his mother linger for days and days in hospice care after an already long stay of more than 100 days in the hospital. I told him at supper I didn’t think this would be the night. But I was wrong. When Joe dropped me back off, I walked back into mom’s hospital room and found her still asleep. Pain and comfort meds had been increased so that she was taking some every couple of hours, in rotation. When my mom started talking to her mother (who had been dead for years), I began to think this might be the night. An old high school friend – and an angel here on earth – Pennie Hill Cutler, happened to be chatting with me on Facebook that night. She wanted to send good thoughts and prayers. I told Pennie that it looked like mom was ready, but holding on.

Billie and Janice Stafford pose in front of the Walton’s Mountain Museum in Schuyler during a trip to Virginia some years ago. The Waltons television series was no stranger to your living room.

“She’s worried about you and what she’s leaving behind,” said Pennie. “You have to tell her it’s okay. It’s okay to go and all will be okay.” Pennie talked me through the next few hours. She’d done the same thing with her own grandmother as she died. Another friend and a neighbor back in Virginia, Suzanne Wood, a hospice nurse, also kept advising me. She was so crucial at such a crucial time. “Advocate for your mom,” she reminded me. In one of her more coherent moments, mom looked at me and said, “Don’t leave me alone.” I assured her I would be right by her side. “And don’t let me hurt,” she said, turning to the nurse. Her facial expressions began showing she was seeing things that weren’t there. Her increase in pain became more and more obvious, as she was already suffering from congestive heart failure. I asked her nurse, Lisa (a living angel), if we could increase the meds. My mom felt as though she was drowning and after a call to the hospice people, we were able to increase to hourly injections. Then it was just me and mom. I rubbed her hair. I hummed one of my dad’s favorite choir songs he used to sing back in church, “Go Tell It On The Mountain.” I played video clips on my phone of my daughter Peyton talking about her “Little Ponies.” I held her hand and told her it was okay to go.

“We would all be fine,” I said. “We love you.” I reminded her that she brought us here and that I would help see her out. I held her hand and talked about letting go and flying over the farm, seeing the beautiful flowers and cows and horses and those beautiful sunshiny days where all of us as little kids would play during the endless summers. Sometime around 4 a.m. that Saturday morning, mom’s nurse came in and gave another injection. She was sitting up halfway so she could breath better and she wasn’t comatose, but she was sleeping. I took a break from rubbing her hair and sat in a chair by her bed, where I briefly nodded off. For no reason at all, I glanced over at her bed and I could see her lifting her hand and motioning me to come closer. She turned to look at me and I went to her bedside. It was apparent that she was about to cross over and she wanted me there. She stared straight into my eyes. Her breaths were so very shallow. I held her hand, rubbed her hair and through my own tears, I spoke to her. “You are not alone,” I said. “I am here. I love you. We all love you. You can go. Go see daddy. He’s waiting.” She smiled at me, looked straight up and took her last gasp of breath. With that, she was gone. During those final minutes, I’d been frantically trying to text my sister and cousin to come see mom one last time, but I couldn’t reach them. Once mom was gone, I was able to call them. While I waited for them to arrive, I just sat and held her hand. Eventually, I walked out and told the nurse she was gone. “Honey, what a blessing,” she said. “Sometimes it can take a long time. She was blessed to go quickly and easily.” She was right. My time back in Tennessee was filled with all sorts of emotion. But, as I told both ministers at the funeral, along with her many friends, my mother’s passing was beautiful and it was an honor for me to be there. It truly was.

Many people sacrificed for me to be able to be with mom during her final hours. First and foremost, my beautiful wife Yvette, who knew I needed to go and to go fast. She also knew we had an approaching blizzard and all of the normal chores to take care of. With chickens and other farm responsibilities, a magazine on deadline and two children to keep entertained (and safe), her wagon was loaded. But she did it beautifully. Our neighbor Justin bladed the driveway and got it cleared of snow while I was away so that Yvette didn’t have to worry about that. Joe Markham, who took me to Cracker Barrel, was a light in the darkness. Not only were we high school buddies, we were also cops together back in the ‘80s. Joe lives in Ft. Lauderdale, but has a home back where we grew up. Years back, he and his wife Dana gave me the key and said anytime I was in town to stay and rest. As if that wasn’t enough, when I called Joe to let him know I’d be there the next night he told me that had just left town and was on a layover in Tampa. He told me without hesitation that he would go back to Ft Lauderdale, clear his calendar and return the next day. He flew all the way back to Memphis, rented a car, and was with me for the next several days and straight through to the funeral. Just having him there was so comforting and it allowed me some time to leave the hospital and chat with a buddy who had already gone through this with both of his own parents. He was there every step of the way; I’ll never be able to repay what his presence meant over that week. My cousin, Millette, lived in town and helped keep mom company as she cared for her. She and my mother had a very special bond. Her mom (my mother’s sister) died last year, which left Millette with only my mom (her dad died more than 20 years ago and her only sibling passed away just a few years ago). Millette, without complaint, was always there for my mom and, after her death, prepared all of the meals for our family and opened her home to all of us. We were best buds as kids growing up and we’ve rekindled our relationship over the past year.

Obviously, my sister and brother – who have been keeping it together for my parents as they aged over the years – were a major part of my personal support group. For them, the feeling of loss is going to be a huge life change. While they will get to breathe now, it will be a new day moving forward without our parents. I was scheduled to be on air for CBS-19 in Charlottesville the weekend of the blizzard because one of their chief meteorologists was out of town. I was on call to act as relief for David Reese and James Gilbert, two top notch meteorologists, but they knocked coverage out of the park after they told me to go home and be with my family. There are so many other people that I will get to eventually; you all mattered. All of the friends and family like Joe Larkins, my former WREG-TV news anchor colleague from Memphis, who drove up 80 miles just to give me a hug at the funeral – just like he did at dad’s last year. “It sometimes helps just to see a familiar face from the past in a sea of people,” he said, telling me that a friend had done the same for him years ago. He’s right. It does matter. My journey home to my family back in Virginia was welcome, but different this time. As the road passed behind me, I realized that I had no physical parental presence. We’ve each taken things from their old homeplace that are uniquely special to us and what’s left will be sold at an estate sale. My memories back there will always remain, but it will be different. But I’d be a liar if I didn’t say it was good to get home to Virginia and back on our farm; to hug my wife and children and to continue making memories. Goodbye Mom and Dad. You mattered. And today I am able to raise my kids live my best life, all thanks to you. When you see family and friends going through a loss like this one, take a minute to write a note or give a hug. Just do it. It may be just the thing needed to get through that 60 seconds. Tommy

My mother, Janice Stafford (the woman on the left; I’m in front of her), penned the popular “Houdini in the House” food column for our local paper, the Dyersburg Mirror. We inherited piles and piles of her treasured recipe cards, like the one she handwrote for Sausage Bites. MARCH 2016

Winter of the Monkey The Chinese New Year is here and this Monkey isn’t going to sit around this house. So we’ve had some great adventures so far this year.
Utah & Idaho for New Year’s hitting up Boise, Sun Valley, Salt Lake City and Park City for some incredible snowboarding and trail running. It was my first time to Boise and well worth a thought for your next Western Adventure. They have a Spud Drop for their New Year’s Celebration! Ponderosa Pine Scenic Highway is a must. Sun Valley is so cute and Park City ... Well, words won’t cover that place. Let’s say one wipeout on the snowboard and I was up to my waist in powder. Sweet!
Back in the Nelson Zone, we hiked the Priest in about 3 inches of fresh powder for training. Yep some friends were getting fit before hitting a 17,000 ft mountain down in Ecuador. We left from the Rt 56 trailhead with light flurries. As the hike steepened, the snowfall

continued with us on the entire journey. The final ascent was a bit of a trick with the rocks and rocks getting a little hard to see every step. The top’s view was totally fogged in and surreal in silence. Our return trip should have been done on ice skates! By the time we made our back to the trailhead, sun was out and most of the snow was gone. Perfect trip wrapped up with a lunch stop at Devils Backbone. Check out the hike online: https://www.strava. com/activities/472746025

And a special treat, Happy Mutant Adventure Races (www.thehappymutant.com) will be throwing in some entries to their Happy Mutant Adventure Races being held at Lazy Days Winery in July! Event details are online at Trireg.com. Details are still coming together for Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series presented by Bold Rock Hard Cider. Keep an eye on this article or under #EmbracetheAdventure for final Series details as well as here in the magazine and via Wintergreen Resort’s social media channels. It’s sure to challenge and reward you. These are the three main weekends of events:

MARCH 2016

A Taste of Spring Nothing screams spring like color. No, not the usual Forsythia, redbud and serviceberry show that runs across the valley and on the slopes of the mountains in the spring; I mean mindboggling, Easter-egg like pastel colors scattered around your landscape like some sort of horticultural eye liner that you adorn your lawn with in the spring; pansies. Unfortunately for the industry, pansies are not as tough as they make them out to be. A fall planted pansy has a terrible time with both dry cold and wet conditions that frequent this area each and every winter. Yes, some make it, but their color is spotty and their habit is loose and damaged at best. Early spring, however, is a wonderful time to make that trip to the garden center for color that will start in March and finally succumb to the planting dates of your favorite summer annuals around the 15th of May – 2 ½ months of color that just keeps getting better and better. Compared to the October 15th pansy, a spring planted selection of cold tolerant annuals and pansies will make them look like silly and a complete waste of time and money. Here is what I would look for: The size of the pansy’s face is as important as the color: too large and you will have just a few blooms and they take longer to recover from winter & spring frosts/freezes; too small and they just don’t have the impact that you would be looking for. We shoot for the 1 ½ inch blooms found in a number of ‘series’ (or groups of pansies with similar genetics) easily located in most garden centers in the central Virginia area. The Skyline, Delta and Matrix are series that we tend to like quite a bit. We typically avoid series with excessively large blooms (like Majestic Giant) or with too small of blooms (like the Viola series). Our color pallet is comprised of pastel colors that you would find on Easter eggs – mostly

light yellow, light orange, light and dark blue and apricot. Other plants that should be considered to work with these are both cold tolerant annuals and early perennials, both of which can be installed around the same time as these spring pansies. I like Alyssum, Bachelor’s Buttons, poppy’s, snapdragon, dianthus and stock in the annual department. Most all of these require adequate drainage as spring rains will inundate them with moisture if you do not prepare for it. From the perennial side, I really like both creeping and woodland phlox, candytuft (requires adequate drainage), Trillium, Hellebore and Alyssum ‘Mountain Gold’ (with its light yellow color). Of course, if you forgot your daffodil bulbs this past fall, tie a ribbon on your finger for next year and plan to make an investment that will reward you each and every year. No deer, vole or other varmint will fight you for this one. When planting all of these items, you don’t have to go ‘all in’ and spend a ton of money to make a big splash. By paying attention to the corners and focal points, your landscape will echo the effects of warming temperatures on our native species and start off the season with unparalleled color for very little capital. The ‘corners’ refers, just as it sounds, to areas where your landscape beds either naturally turn or where they are forced to turn in relation to driveways or structures. By highlighting these areas, your guests’ eyes will quickly gravitate to the color and get maximum bang for your buck. Focal points would be referring to smaller structures like birdhouses, birdbaths and the like where both the structure and the color work in concert to highlight both your landscape and reward the eye. All in all, you really can’t go wrong. Try a few; try a lot. Add some color and get the 2016 landscape off to a rewarding and gratifying start.

Discover Why

Dear Dr. Cole, I have heard about Zika Virus on the news. It sounds frightening. There is a lot that we don’t know about Zika, but we do know that Zika is spread by mosquitoes. My son recently asked me what the world’s deadliest animal is. I thought of animals like lions and tigers and bears. The answer is the mosquito. It has been estimated that mosquitoes transmit diseases to almost 700 million people annually resulting in 2 to 3 million deaths every year. Some of these illnesses are well known, whereas others are less known. Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop complications and die. In 2013 an estimated 198 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 500,000 people died. About 1,500 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year, mostly in travelers returning from countries where malaria transmission occurs. In late 2013, chikungunya virus was found for the first time in the Americas. Symptoms of chikungunya

virus infection include fever and joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash. Dengue virus is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics. As many as 400 million people are infected yearly. The symptoms of dengue are high fever, severe headache and eye pain, joint pain, muscle pain, rash, mild bleeding manifestations. Yellow fever currently occurs only in tropical areas of Africa and the Americas. It is a rare illness of travelers anymore because most countries have requirements for yellow fever vaccines. Every year about 200,000 cases occur with 30,000 deaths. There are many mosquito-borne illnesses, with Zika being the newest one. The best prevention is to avoid mosquitoes. Use insect repellent and wear loose clothing with long sleeves and long pants. Avoid standing water where mosquitoes breed. If traveling to malaria endemic areas, use appropriate preventive medications. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
