This beautifully remodeled slopeside villa, with year round mountain views, offers the ultimate in convenience. Due to its unique location, it offers both a short and level walk from the parking area to the building. On top of that, it also happens to be an end unit. And there’s more…in addition to the main deck off the living room, there’s a second deck located off the master bedroom. This is a feature that only end units offer. The association even stacks the firewood right at the door. Unit has a history of producing strong rental income for those interested in generating cash flow. It’s highly unusual to have it all, but here, you can.
Located in the very first building of Diamond Hill neighborhood this condo is almost at the top of Dobie and Diamond Hill ski slopes. Often Diamond Hill slope is not open at the beginning of the ski season so being close to the ski lift is crucial to be called “ski front” all season long. This condo is also an end villa which means better privacy and better views. The master bedroom walks out onto Romeo and Juliet balcony overlooking the ski slopes. Beautiful open and bright floor plan with amazing views of the ski runs and the Blue Ridge mountains. Furnished. On a rental program with steady rental income. Many building upgrades in the last few years- trex decks, new plumbing, hardiplank siding, new doors and windows. Well priced.
This is a beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo located at a short walk from the ski slopes, The Market and all other amenities in the heart of Wintergreen Village. The condo interior was nicely renovated a few years ago. No stairs from the parking to this condo. Laurelwood community pool is only a few steps away. The condo is on the resort rental program and generates a steady revenue. Very attractive and cozy property, ready for you to move in and start enjoying exciting mountain vacations.

from
thepublishers There’s a big part of me that wants to put the winter clothes away. This will be two years in a row I haven’t had an opportunity to break out the snowshoes. “Mommy, when can we go get a new slip-n-slide?” Peyton asked me the other day, as she was shedding her fleece jacket. Her brother was quick to correct. “Peyton, it is not spring or summer yet. It is still winter!” Never mind he’s wearing short sleeves and shorts. The onions and garlic have ignored the calendar and are starting to come up. This is our first year planting them in raised beds and though I want to pull one, something tells me the minute I do, our weather radio will start squawking its belligerent cry of an impending snow storm. There’s a spot in the yard under the old maple where I planted some bulbs a while back when a winter heat streak coincided with a nursery clearance. There’s nothing like poking around in the dirt only to feel something squishy. I had interrupted a happily hibernating toad. His neighbor has yet to emerge (do toads spoon with daffodils?) but a few yards away, the creeping phlox
I planted around the porch last year has allowed one of its fuchsia flowers to erupt. Probably because the peepers have been telling everyone else to go ahead and do it. Back to the slip-n-slide. The stores are in that awkward transition between red cupids and green leprechauns so it’ll be a while before we see the familiar boxes of sewn-together sheets of plastic. But we have a garden hose, a frost free spigot and two children who think “cleaning the patio” and floating toys in a wash tub are the greatest things on God’s peculiar Earth, where toads and daffodils get more action than snowshoes. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Many Ways To Say Vouvray Or maybe just one way, really. Voo-VRAY. But this jack of all trades can seem like many wines at once, delighting your taste buds in varying styles from pétillant (lightly sparkling) and mousseux (fully sparkling) to sec (dry), demi-sec (off-dry), doux (sweet), moelleux (sweeter still and sometimes botrytized) and finally liquoreux (quite rich and sweet, indeed). Perhaps I love the wines of the Loire because they’re the very first wines I learned, but I hope my heart would have found its way to them without the Parisian introduction for they offer so much, not the least being an understated elegance and complexity, dependent largely on terroir. With Vouvray, a wine unmatched in its chameleon capacity to change itself, this is due primarily to its grape variety, Chenin Blanc. Because Chenin is a neutral enough grape, it takes its cue from climate and soil. The majority of Vouvrays are demi-sec, luscious creatures that make insanely good partners with food. If the S-word scares you off, remember these wines have the acidity to balance their sugar. Touraine, Vouvray’s home and a sec-
tion of the Loire Valley where history relives itself visually in its countless châteaux, offers some of the most idyllic countryside in France. The garden spot of France it’s called, home to graceful Chenonceaux and majestic Chambord, birthplace of Rabelais and immortalized by Ronsard, where a wide, languid Loire River plays center stage, supported by the Vienne, Cher and Indre, and where the climate is gentle and mild, and the vineyards abundant. Yet the Loire is considered the northern limit of viable viticulture, which means acidic wines. Still, the combination of balanced acid and sugar is not only what makes these wines ideal dinner dates but also what allows them the longevity for which they’re lauded. Vouvray and its brother (or perhaps rival) Montlouis across the river Loire are revered in French wine bars as exemplar food pairing wines, yet little appreciated or known in the U.S. They’re subtle wines, perhaps in this respect more European than American. Don’t look for the fruit of Chardonnay, and certainly not the oak. With food: Pair your dry Vouvrays with oysters, chèvres or anything other whites work
with; the off-dry versions can take on creamy sauces, chicken livers, river fish and stronger flavours. Remember to contrast. You don’t want sweet with sweet, but rather sweet with salt. That means pair your sweet Vouvray with something salty, like the classic Roquefort. François Chidaine, Vouvray, Les Argiles, 2014 (dry, biodynamic) – There is not enough space to write about this great and humble producer. François Chidaine makes impeccable, nuanced wines. While he’s best known for Montlouis, his Vouvrays also shimmer. Old vines and low yields help showcase the Chenin Blanc grape at its finest. This example, Les Argiles, named for the clay soils, shows yeasty, bready brioche notes due to lees aging, combined with dried orchard fruit and bitter lemon. $32.99 Benoit Gautier, Vouvray, 2015 (off-dry)– A light edge with persimmon and quince notes throughout. 90 pts. Wine Spectator. $14.99 Domaine de Clos de l’Epinay, Vouvray, 2014 (off-dry)– Crisp, with aromas of verbena and lime blossom. $18.99 Monmousseux, Clos de Vigneau, Vouvray, 2015 (off-dry) – Rich texture and mouthfeel. Honeysuckle and peach notes. 18.99

Blue Ridge LIFE
MARCH 2017
Rob Mezzanote – (“Bobby Midnight” his band members whisper in a huddled circle) – is the leader of the locomotive that is the Bobby Midnight Band. Brian “Sometimes the Brick” Wahl – Bass, Paul Rosner – Drums, and Nick Cardoni – Piano and Wrangler of the Butterflies, form the fervent and steadfast support system that has accompanied Rob for over two years now. We met on stage in the empty, half-lit Charlottesville High School Auditorium for a private band practice/photoshoot. I had, admittedly, never heard any of them play before in any capacity, even though I’ve known Rob for many years. Never did I expect a sound with such sultry complexity to hit me right in my funky soul as I took photos around them, but that’s exactly what happened. “We started in the Trees on Fire for ten years, the three of us (myself, Brian and Paul), then took a little bit of time for ourselves. Then me and Paul got together and started playing in this space, in this room. Brian pretty quickly after, and then Nick joined fairly shortly after that,” explained Rob as we all congregated cross-legged on the floor of the stage after practice.

15 May Apple Ln. The Bobby Midnight Band has one album called, “All I Ever” and you can find it at BMBalbum.com and RockfishMusic.com. The boys teamed up with Rockfish Music, a local music company compiled of Dave Stripe with Little Rhodie Productions and Peter Agelasto of Monkeyclaus Recording Studio, whose focus since its inception in 2014 has been to highlight independent bands and musicians in the area. “I listened to their sound and was in love with it. They’ve got these great musicians and multiple styles and they’re fusing it all together,” says longtime friend and fan, Dave Stipe. “Initially we just intended on recording a couple singles. When Nick came into the band, it pushed things further, and we said, ‘Man we got a record on our hands now’”. It took me a total of thirty seconds to reach this website while writing this article and start playing their music, and it took less time than that for it to have an effect in the form of some serious swaying and finger-snapping. continued on page 14

Rob explained further that, “One of the reasons I think it’s such a special album is that most of the elements are live. We try to record vocals, bass, drums, and keys all at the same time and get that chunk live… We can get in there and roll with some stuff.” This act is no small feat, especially for musicians who have full time jobs and lives outside of the band. Paul (drums), who actually works the lights and sounds in that very high school, stated as a united consensus that, “None of us are in the position to just drop everything and hit the road, so it’s a bit of a slow burn.” Musician/Carpenter/Computer Programmer, Rob is also a Husband/New Father to the cutest thing in Carhartt, five-month old, Owen. “I’m on low sleep, but my life is good,” Rob said grinning. “It’s been amazing to have a kid and a total inspiration. I’ve been writing a lot of music with him, and that is pretty cool because he’s sort of like a mirror. He’ll just sit in his chair and I can play and write music and he will just sort of react. “Lindsey’s an amazing mom and a very supportive wife for my musical endeavors. She’s the first one to be like, ‘Go do that!” She wants me to keep moving on it. It’s a good asset to have.” The only thing more inspiring than Rob, his family, and his passion would be the band that stands beside him, their talent, and the trust they have in Bobby Midnight. “For us, it’s the fact that we’re creating original music, and we have a guy who’s just prolific as hell and just keeps crushing the songs,” Paul explained. “So as a band, we’re way behind him in terms of trying to catch up to all the songs that he has, trying to get all these songs arranged and in band format. And right now there’s no way for us to keep up with him.” 14

Pianist, Nick added that where there is value in the repeatable sound that comes with an album, live music can cultivate unparalleled connections. “I like to perform,” admitted Nick. “I think that right now and where we all are in life, in terms of that work-life balance, we can all easily get out to several gigs a month and connect with a lot of people in the area – and that’s a natural high, just getting out there and having a crowd respond to what we’re doing.” The past couple years for this group has been about finding their rhythm and building up a momentum. That, plus the verve that comes with dropping your first album, leaves 2017 wide open for new opportunities. “We’ve played a variety of genres for a variety of age groups with great results, mainly focusing on vineyards west of town. We’re looking forward to bringing that energy and diversifying our geographical approach to rocking out and getting down,” stated Brian (he slaps the bass). New for Rockfish Music is a monthly event at Starr Hill to feature the bands under their label, with hopes that it intertwines audiences and culminates new relationships. “Beer and cider go great with music,” said Peter Agelasto, who’s energy and passion is undeniably contagious. “Dave Stipe was able to connect with Starr Hill and they’ve been so supportive in creating a few different nights for Rockfish Music. We’ve really enjoyed Crozet to being the sister city to the Nelson County mothership”. Take it from me – there’s a gravitational pull that occurs once the BMB train passes through town, (whether it’s Nelson, Crozet or Charlottesville), and it’s best not to fight it. Just get on board. STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD
AGING WINE IN FRENCH OAK MAY BE THE STANDARD, BUT AFTON MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS IS MAKING ROOM FOR
VIRGINIA OAK With bottling just days away, winemaker Damien Blanchon steps away from the array of test tubes in his office set up to conduct a free sulfur analysis, to show me the new barrels in the cellar. While most of the wine at Afton Mountain Vineyard is being aged in French Oak, Damien has rolled into production two barrels crafted from Virginia white oak. “We grow our grapes here, we make the wine here so it made sense to use more of the Virginia ... It’s the first year we are using it.” To the untrained eye, you can’t really tell apart a local barrel from a French. But look up close and below the winery logo you’ll see the brand that gives it away: Virginia. “The main difference between the French oak barrel that we use and the Virginia barrel is what it’s going to give to the wine after a long period of aging time,” Damien explains. “Microoxygenation is different because the density of the wood is different. The French is denser and the Virginia is a bit looser, I would say. It develops a little bit more of those notes of coconut, of vanilla, a bit more [of a] sweet feeling to the wine.” In theory, it’s the perfect finishing touch to add to high structure wine like Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The branded initials “MT-TH” provide additional clues: “MT” stands for Medium Toast and “TH” is Toasted Head. The toast – or the level of charring of the barrels at the cooperage – also affects the flavor of the wine. “It gives a higher volume of toasted oak barrel so it gives more influence, more impact to the wine.” But crafting good wine takes time. Damien is hoping to release the Virginia oak aged Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon in 2018. BRL 16

Lou Boden’s CD, “For the First Time” is available through cdbaby.com . For every CD sold Lou gives one to a patient.
THE PIED PIPER “This what I’ll do as long as I can breathe and my fingers will move.” Lightning struck Lou Boden’s downtown Staunton Victorian manse in 2008. The spacious three-story was home to three generations of family. Nearly destroyed by fire and water damage the just completed restoration had to begin anew. Sitting by a mellow fire in my living room sipping coffee, Lou reflects on the devastation of a one in a million tragedy. Lou says of his wife, “Ellen buried herself in the project of getting the house rebuilt. Ellen is a projects person.” Of himself, Lou said, “I’m a people person. My father-in-law died in my arms; my favorite dog died a month later.” The aftertrauma of the fire was intense. Lou felt “There was nothing I could do, I was in shock. I was so stressed the mantra, the prayer I said every day for God knows how long, I couldn’t get the words out in order.” “For some unknown reason” Lou picked up a Native American flute and held an extended note, then another, after some practice serene melodies formed and helped Lou calm down. “I realized if it works for me it might work for somebody else.”

Fast forward to the present and about ten more flutes later. The same flute, in the same tuning, made of different wood will have a unique sound given the cell structure of the wood. At one point there were some 700 Native American tribes with flutes as diverse as their makers and indigenous trees. Lou transports these flutes in a protective fleecy bag most importantly to Augusta Health the community hospital in Augusta County. “My belief is it’s just my turn. I think all of us need help in our lives getting through everything. Yes, if you have belief in a spirit -which I do- then you have help there. Nobody gets through life without other people helping them. Given a choice I would always rather play for people in the hospital.” Particular to Lou’s intensive ten-year studies in alternative healing, Augusta Health welcomed him to play for patients. Oft times health care facilities require certification or a music therapy degree, a goal Lou, and Chairman of Augusta Health Foundation Cheri Moran, are looking for ways to fund for other musicians. Cheri says, “Lou is the backbone of the program. He provides patients and staff with music that is peaceful and relaxing. He is just a kind and wonderful man.” In rebuttal to this statement Lou says, “It’s not about me, it’s about the music, it’s about helping people.” Frequently Lou will walk into one of the seven wards he plays in and have a doctor direct him to a patient for a specific need such as lowering blood pressure. Patients come out of comas not knowing who Lou is but recalling the sound of the flute. Lou spends extra time with those who have no friends or family to reassure them in their time of transition. Comfort Care requires lower slower notes. Pediatrics calls for a spritely flute. “It’s intuitive to me which flute I reach for.” The prayer Lou couldn’t recall transcends words. “A cancer patient, who could no longer speak, yet weakly raised one little finger trying to mouth ‘just one more,’ every time I thought it was time for me to go to the next patient.” The Pied Piper of the Spirit. When opportunity knocks ... Don’t slam the door on a buyer!
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Are you being flooded with prospective purchasers? Probably NOT! While the Nelson County real estate market is showings some signs of improvement, it can still take time (currently an average of 185 days on market) to attract the right buyer. The spring market is right around the corner. Sellers, be prepared when opportunity knocks, and avoid these major turn-offs for home buyers. Dirt: Nothing turns off a buyer quicker than a dirty home. Roll up the sleeves and get to work to eliminate dirt and grime. Go the extra mile from scrubbing to steam cleaning. Cleaning may take a lot of effort, but very little financial investment. Cleaning is time well spent! Odor: Homes are bought on hearing, sight, and smell! Avoid cooking fish and other odorous foods. Make necessary lifestyle changes such as only smoking outdoors. Eliminate pet
odors. Half of the population doesn’t even like pets and will immediately be turned off by lingering pet odor. Clean carpets and upholstery; if the odor persists, consider replacement.
the return on the investment. Change dated cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and even extremely old kitchen appliances.
Clutter: Less is more! Clear from counter tops to closets. Room to room, make sure furniture and accessories are minimal. Leave items that accentuate a room and remove all obstacles to pathways and focal points.
Wallpaper: The masses don’t appreciate wallpaper! Wallpaper is extremely personalized and can be a pain to remove. Most buyers want to enjoy the high of owning a “new to them” home and not have the immediate buzz kill of another item on the move-in to-do list.
Personal items: Decorate to sell not live. Remove eccentric décor and colors, including paint. In addition, don’t distract buyers with walls and tables full of family photos. Buyers should envision themselves, not you, living in the home.
Popcorn ceilings: From floor to ceiling the home needs to be appealing. No buyer will look up to admire that popcorn or cottage cheese ceiling. It may have been fashionable in the ‘60s or ‘70s, but it is no longer hip. Restore it to a smooth surface.
Old fixtures: Dated fixtures can be left for the buyer to change, but they may impede the sale process. Fixtures are inexpensive relative to
Curb appeal: Curb appeal is that critical first impression. Buyers will judge a book by the cover. Weed, edge, trim, and mulch the flower

beds. Make mildew, dirt, spider webs, and other debris disappear, so that the buyers won’t. Misrepresentation: Beauty or the Beast? Highlight the home’s strengths, but don’t exaggerate. Be sure that dreamy description truly matches the reality. Sellers: Run errands, go for a walk, or just vacate the premises. Allow buyers the freedom to see and discuss your home with their agent. Attract the buyer with marketing. Wow the buyer with price AND condition. Avoid these showing pitfalls and turn the buyer “on,” not “off.”

Blue Ridge LIFE
MARCH 2017
Lee Graves of Albemarle is an author highly-qualified and wellversed in the world of beer, and if his glass looks half empty in the pictures, it’s because he drank the other half. Call it a celebratory beverage, due to the fact that beer drinkers alike now have the ability to tap into the resource of his newest book, “Charlottesville Beer: Brewing in Jefferson’s Shadow.” “I love beer,” Lee states enthusiastically as we chat by the bar at Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, Nelson’s first brewery which opened back in 2007. “We are now in, what I call, the Golden Age of brewing and craft beer.” And if there’s anyone who’s been riding that frothy wave since the beginning, it’s Lee. “I started writing about beer in 1996 for the Richmond Times Dispatch. I was on the staff as an editor and a columnist, doing different kinds of writing,” he explains. “The editors came out of a meeting one day and they said, ‘We’ve noticed this craft beer boom, micro-breweries, and we’d like somebody on the staff to write a weekly column.’ I landed that and for six years was writing a weekly column.” Fast forward more than a decade to a new city, a new job, and a new writing opportunity, but with a similar after-taste.

Saturday, March 18 Apple Tree Grafting Workshop with John Hoskins and Tom Burford “History Press, who is the publisher of this book, contacted me about doing a book. They are doing these kinds of books all over the country.” Lee started this project by writing a beer book about Richmond in 2014, and subsequently moved on to Charlottesville’s version. These informative paperbacks contain a healthy dose of hoppy historical knowledge while keeping tabs on the current local buzz, including photos of brewers along the Brew Ridge Trail. “I learned a lot about the history and there’s some fascinating stuff in both books that I was surprised to find. In terms of beer history, the importance of woman and slaves – I think those are two sectors that are underappreciated, underrepresented.” A third beer book of a slightly larger scale is already in the works. That combined with the steady stream of narrative story-telling and the unbroken melodies that flow through his mind, and you could consider Lee Graves a busy man. One thing’s for certain; he’ll always be the Beer Guy. BRL

BACK ON THE SLOPES STRICKEN BY A STROKE, A BELOVED SKI COACH GETS BACK ON THE SKIS
28
Blue Ridge LIFE
MARCH 2017
As best as he can remember, April 3, 2016 was the day Andrew Bullis’ life changed. “We think. We’re not really quite sure.” A full time ski coach and race administrator at Ragged Mountain in Vermont, Andrew had been in Virginia and was headed back north for a job interview on the 4th, a Monday. The details are fuzzy but at some point, Andrew had a stroke and he didn’t get to the hospital until the 6th, a Wednesday. On a Friday afternoon months later, as dozens of skiers slide and spill on the slopes outside the Wintergreen Adaptive Sports building adjacent to the beginners’s area, Potato Patch, Andrew is starting over with a team of physical therapy students from Shenandoah University. “We’re working on gait. We’re working on skiing. We’re trying to get him back into a normal posture,” says second year PT student Kayla Buechner, her red hair pulled back as she guides Andrew through some balance and movement exercises. The progress is slow and measured but it’s progress. Andrew still has the slow and stiff walk of a man who’s had a stroke, but he’s got the gaze of a man who doesn’t see himself as a helpless victim. “His attitude has just skyrocketed,” Kayla adds. “Watching him on the slopes is really cool. This is something that was very special to him and so being able to bring that in to the therapy means a lot to him.”
“I’m making progress but I’m having to relearn how to ski. It’s like learning how to walk again,”
WINTERGREEN
[ nelson county ]
Andrew admits. He’s wearing a pair of black Carhartt bibs with a strap dangling off his shoulder. Simple things like straightening it up are tough when the left side of your body is rebelling. “It’s something that I used to take for granted and do every day and didn’t think about. And now I think about it all the time.” You might say Melissa Wolff-Burke is now coaching the students coaching the former coach. An assistant professor at Shenandoah University, she heads up the clinical Physical Therapy program, mentoring students at Wintergreen Resort in a weekly program that combines an integrated clinical with an adaptive sport activity. She speaks with enthusiasm when she describes the program and the real time learning she witnesses in her students. Shifting her attention to Andrew, her voice slows. “It’s pretty emotional for someone who was so ... so capable,” she says as Andrew stands up with the help of her students. “But what’s amazing from what we’ve seen so far is the skill that he had prior to the stroke is transferring to what he can do now.” continued on page 30

“Keep on going. Don’t give up. Every day is a little bit better so I gotta keep telling myself that.” – Andrew Bullis continued from page 29
Cassie Ringstaff is the other second year PT student helping Andrew. “I’m telling you the past two weeks, it has been phenomenal to see his progression in this short amount of time. He’s highly motivated and a hard worker and it’s great to work with a patient like that. After some time working on land skills indoors, Andrew has earned some slope time. With the help of his therapy team, he slowly makes it outside, navigating to a safe spot free from zooming snow boarders and newbies wiping out. “It’s just good to be out and sliding around again.” The trick is to transfer what he knows in his mind to the parts of his body yearning to do what they used to do. “What we have seen outside – his innate ability to stand and balance – has to be from what’s in there, plus what it is we are trying to reintroduce,” Melissa explains. “The knowledge is there and I know what I’m supposed to be doing but I can’t get my body to cooperate,” Andrew adds. “This whole experience has been like I’m in a body I don’t have any control over, that I used to have a lot of control over and I used to look at that as my biggest asset.” He now finds himself coaching himself. “Keep on going. Don’t give up. Every day is a little bit better so I gotta keep telling myself that.” BRL

TURNING
After spending 30 years in courtrooms as a criminal defense and domestic relations attorney, Kathy Bonham is quite content being off the docket and behind a display counter at her gallery, where she’s just finished off a lunchtime banana. “I have never lived anywhere – and I’ve lived all over – where there is such a concentration of incredible talent. From music – there must be 100 bands in Nelson County – and then from crafts and painting and fine art. It’s just amazing and what I have in here is just a tip of the iceberg.” That tip of the iceberg – the first room on your right as you enter the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Greenfield – is the Rockfish River Gallery, a venture celebrating its second year in business. It started out as an offshoot of the Valley Green Gallery which was located in Nellysford. “About 15, counting myself, came and we now have 54 people showing in the gallery.” A full docket? Not really. Though Kathy is proud to have served low income people who needed her help, those days and the stress that came along with the job are long behind her. Her days are surrounded by local artwork, wooden crafts, pottery, jewelry, to name a few. There’s very little that would drive her up the wall these days. “Very little, actually. I always get a little nervous when I’m doing the books each month but then that goes away. I really love doing this and I always remind myself if I’m getting a little anxious that this is so easy. I shouldn’t say easy: not stressful.” And that includes planning the gallery’s second anniversary celebration. It’s set for March 4, which coincides with the RVCC Community Market. Store items will be marked down 10% and the ninth shopper will be bonused with $50 in money to spend in the store that day. BRL

Tripped Up Well, you wrap up one season and the next thing you know you’re planning the next! Last year was a blast and super busy. It felt like every weekend was in Sprint Mode. We had more than 30 races on the books and not one inch of Virginia was left untouched by foot or mountain bike. The Virginia Off Road Series hosted over 24 race weekends with over 2,000 athletes. Our races with James River & New River State Park’s went well-received. So what do you for an encore? You do it all over again! With the Virginia Off Road Series, we’ll have the same number of race weekends but with a few new twists. For one, the season will kick off at Pocahontas State Park with the Tour de Pocahontas. If you haven’t heard, Pocahontas is Virginia’s largest state park with more than 8100 acres to play in. So we take a good portion
of the park for mountain bike racing and camping. Day one, we will host Endurance Racing with 50 and 25 mile mountain bike races. The day will wrap up with camping and other evening festivities. Day two, there will be time trials and XC-style racing to wrap up the day. It’s gonna be off the hook! A few extra highlights that will appealing to some mountain bike racers is that the USAC National Championships will be held at Snowshoe, West Virginia for the next two years. Some athletes have the desire to make a national name for themselves; having these races so close to Virginia will stir the pot in our local races this year because they will need to qualify in our to participate. Well, we have the USAC Nationals Qualifier/Virginia State Championship in our series and they will be held in Woolwine, Virginia in late May. Another addition to the Virginia Off Road Series this year will be our
James River State Park’s Adventure Triathlon! This race, as described below, is really gaining traction this year and will probably fill to capacity with 60 participants. Plus, James River also becomes the first race in the new Virginia State Park’s Adventure Series. For the first year of the VSP’s Adventure Series, we will connect six races taking place in James River, Smith Mountain Lake, Hungry Mother, Claytor Lake, New River Trail, and Pocahontas. These races will be traditional and non-traditional triathlons. For the Adventure Series, we will track each participant’s number of races and total accumulated miles raced. When a participant completes 3 races, they will receive a Virginia State Park Annual Pass. For the male and female who achieve the most raced miles, they will receive a Grand Prize Package that will be full of prizes from the Virginia State Parks, Appalachian Power, REI and
our other sponsors. It’s going to be a blast. Stay tuned for details! So that’s just scratching the surface of the iceberg for the activities we are planning. On the flipside, I’ve been running 30-40 miles a week for the last few months and am going to find some time for me to actually participate in some races of my own. I’m excited as it’s been a while since I’ve stood on the right side of the start line. See ya at the races ... One way or the other! March 25/26, 2017 – Virginia Off Road Series launch Pocahontas State Park with the Tour de Pocahontas ( www.VirginiaOffRoadSeries.com ) Saturday: 50 & 25 mile endurance mountain bike races Saturday PM – Camping & other activities Sunday AM – Mountain bike time trials Sunday PM – Mountain bike XC featuring the lake view trails

A Shade Garden You’ve tried several plants in that shade garden that claim to be hardy, love the shade, and are mostly care free. Now, a few years later, not a word of that is true. The problem is you’ve already invested money and time in them and you can’t believe that you are considering gassing up the chain saw and starting over. The problem is that many salesmen and designers alike are prone to opt for the new. New species just sound, well, new. And sales people feel that choosing the newest species goes a long way in showing off the ribbons and brass decorating their apron. In reality, you can provide a wonderful, 12-month delight in a shade garden with species that are 20+ years old that still perform quite well in the shade garden and yes, are quite hardy and involve minimal care. Let’s take a look at ones that work well for me. For the backbone of a shade garden, I don’t have to go further than Vardar Valley boxwood. Offering a blue cast in an otherwise relatively boring family of plants, Vardar Valley stands out as a neat offering. Growing to around 36 inches in height and around 42 inches spread, this plant makes its way well around the foundation of a house beneath windows. Being extremely hardy, drought tolerant and resistant to just about anything that Mother Nature can throw at it, Vardar Valley ranks pretty high on my list of options in shade situations. The only key is to get them started and then, the magic begins. If the words Lenten Rose are still Greek to you, its high time to Google that plant and raid the coin jar near the washing machine. Lenten Rose, or Hellebore, have been around for a while now and continue to show why they remain at the top of the list for shady areas due to their drought and insect tolerance and bloom period that can last for months. Aggres-
sive breeding has yielded countless cultivars that offer single and double blooms, variegated foliage and varying bloom cycles. Don’t try to over think this one; just buy some and enjoy the show starting around February 15 every year. My favorites are the Winter Jewels mix. Everyone has a favorite shade plant and mine is one that can sometimes be difficult to establish but once rooted in and happy, the magic begins. Daphne odora ‘Aureo Marginata’ is one of those plants that just makes its presence known in the landscape with a powerful fragrance that can be detected for great distances, a mix of sweet and almost spicy (in a good way). Being an evergreen with green foliage with a yellow band around the exterior, Fragrant Daphne can help to anchor down an area and provide yearround color and interest. With a slow growth habit, Daphne are also very low on the maintenance list when it comes to pruning. One thing is for sure: once this guy is established, you will never even consider gassing up the chain saw on him. Before you buy, however, know what you are working with and what they require. Dry shade and wet shade have different options in the fern world while the end result is still the same: awesome. With their fine, tall foliage and distinct appearance, ferns offer a grace that is totally all to themselves. No other group of plants can match a mass of ferns in the shade garden. With the aforementioned plants holding down the base, ferns just seem to fit in about any garden motif that one seeks. Don’t go for the multi-color ferns; just choose the simple green. My favorites are Christmas, Cinnamon, Ostrich and Interrupted. Don’t buy just three; ferns work best en masse and lose the effect mentioned here when they are lonely. Best to load up the trunk ...
asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have heard about recent outbreaks of mumps but know nothing about the disease. What can you tell me? ‘Mump’ is a 16th century word meaning grimace or miserable expression! When most people think about mumps they think of puffy cheeks in kids from swollen infected salivary glands. These are usually preceded by fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite. Symptoms usually occur 2-3 weeks after infection and most people get better in a few weeks without any problems; but there are potential complications, especially in adults. These can include inflammation of the testicles, ovaries, breasts or pancreas, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or the lining of the brain (meningitis) – yikes! Deafness can also be a complication – double yikes! There is no treatment for mumps other than symptomatic care. The mumps virus is spread through respiratory secretions and saliva coughing or sneezing, sharing drinking glasses and eating utensils or touching infected surfaces. The virus may be spread before the symptoms start and for several days after the onset of
Discover Why symptoms. Although mumps are no longer very common in the United States there are periodic outbreaks. This year there have been significant outbreaks in Arkansas, Washington State and even in Virginia and at UVa. Mumps vaccination began in 1967. Since that time the reported cases of mumps decreased from almost 200,000 a year to about 1000. The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is usually given at 1 year and 4 years of age. The vaccine prevents most cases of mumps and complications caused by the disease. In many parts of the world mumps is still a very common infection and unvaccinated travelers should get the vaccine prior to travel. Good hygiene practices, such as hand washing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, cleaning potentially infected surfaces and keeping infected kids home from school can help prevent the spread. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
