from

thepublishers Had things gone as planned today, I would have been about halfway through a pig fence project under a bright and beautiful not-quite-spring sky. Instead, I shall write why this didn’t happen. I’m a weirdo when it comes to planning. When Tommy first met me, I scheduled everything – yes, everything – on a tidy list written on a yellow square sticky note. A sense of calm would wash over me as my mechanical pencil would check off each item. Tommy urged me to loosen up and I tried that lifestyle for a while. It’s easy to do when your off day is a Monday and you learn that the bladder inside of a cheap box of wine fits nicely inside an Igloo Playmate. But box wine was so 20 years ago and my listmaking is back, better than ever. I’ve traded little yellow squares of joy for backed up-daily digital lists and productivity apps that live in the cloud. But I have hung on to the mechanical pencil. So when I decided to plan the pig fence, I (ahem) scheduled time to design it on a graph composition book. After researching all the tools I would need to complete the job, I ordered the posts and the tractor-

driven post hole digger, assembled it, ready to receive the big black bit. But sometimes, in spite of proper planning, the big black bit is too long for your tractor and you’re back to square one. “I’m going to name one Annabelle!” I hear Peyton shouting as she prances up to the job site. If I remember correctly, Annabelle was one of the names she used for a pig last year, but that’s Peyton. “The other one is Wilbur!” Adam declared, knowing full well my name is not Fern. So we might as well take our monthly picture, on a stack of posts that should be standing vertically in the ground. Erase this: pig fence. Check off the following: family photo. Insert this: box wine. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine tasting terms: Acidity As a wine connoisseur friend of mine liked to say, most things acid aren’t on your “let’s do” list: acid stomach, acid rain, acid reflux, dropping acid. But with wine, acidity is what keeps our drink of choice tasting fresh and zippy. A wine without acidity is like CocaCola that’s gone flat. Acidity is what keeps you smacking your lips and asking for more. It’s crucial to wine paired with food, and aids its aging capability. Think of acidity as your friend, cleansing your palate from one sip to the next, cutting through fat and protein alike. Wines lacking in acid become, in wine speak, flabby. And anything but flab, sweetie-darling. When pairing white wine with food give me a good Chenin Blanc or Riesling, and for red, it’s hard to find better than Barbera. What do Chenin Blanc, Riesling and Barbera all have in common? Lively acidity. With high acidity and low tannins, Barbera is one of the most foodfriendly wines in the world, although often overlooked in favor of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo-based wines (Chi-

anti, Barbaresco, Barolo). Once upon a time, wines made from Barbera, a grape that adapts easily and well to varied climates and soil, were simple, uncomplicated wines made for quaffing with pasta and pizza, and not taken very seriously. But at the end of the 20th century, many Piedmont growers saw Barbera’s potential, and began producing age-worthy wines of quality. Barbera’s hallmark is a burst of red cherry fruit up front and its acidity. If on first sip, any wine is too acidic for your palate, try it with food, and notice how the acid (and tannin) mellow and also how the flavors of the food intensify. Cantina del Pino, Barbera d’Asti, 2016 D.O.C.G. (organic) – One sip and you see why Italians consider Barbera the official wine for food. There is a school of thought that says Barberas from Asti tend toward more seriousness than those from neighboring Alba (you’ll do the taste test and decide for yourself) because around Alba, the best terroir, i.e. higher slopes, are reserved for the king and queen, Barolo and Barberesco. Barbera gets relegated to the flatland. Not so in Asti, where

Barbera is planted on the higher slopes and allowed to reach its full flavor potential. Plum and cherry notes. Pair with Taleggio, pastas with tomato sauce, pork, grilled vegetables or rice dishes. $21.99. Cantina del Pino, Barbera d’Alba, 2015 D.O.C. (organic) – More time aging in French barriques rather than the larger botti gives the Barbera d’Alba an added depth, softening its tart acidity just a bit and adding complexity. Elegant with notes of violets, incense and plum. Pair with braised meats. $28.99. Barboursville Barbera, Reserve 2015 – Textbook red and black cherry notes, with focused fruit and low tannins. One of the best bottles of Barbera locally. Pair with pizza, pasta Bolognese. $26. Barbera del Monferrato, Scarpetta, 2015– Barbera likely originated in the Monferrato hills around Asti. “Scarpetta” is the local term for dipping bread in sauce, from Scarpa (shoe) and Scarpetta (little shoe). Tart, with layers of dried strawberry. 21.99. And the bargain: Casteggio Barbera, 2015 – From Oltrepo Pavese, smooth cherry fruit with spice notes. $9

Behind a rumbling cement mixer, stands a slender Brit mixing up a cocktail of lime, sand and goat hair. “The old techniques went out for a reason,” Henry Orton says, as he reaches into a bucket for another lump of hair. “It’s a lot more labor intensive, it takes a lot longer time but at the end of the day, you’ve got a much better product.”

Undergoing renovations at presstime, Poplar Forest re-opens to the public March 15.

Henry is a plasterer, like his father was, and to Thomas Jefferson’s getaway he brings his brogue and skills, both of which hail from Leicester. Restoring a home built by our country’s third president – the guy on the face of a nickel – may seem like a big job for a young man. But Henry is 33, and the task is in the capable hands of a master tradesman. Big things can happen when you’re that age. For Jefferson, he was drafting the Declaration of Independence. “Sometimes I have to sort of forget the history about it because it can make you nervous sometimes,” Henry admits. “At the end of the day, you’re just doing some ceilings, you just got to go on and do it.” Go on and do it. Like the Declaration, great things take time. Restoring Poplar Forest to its original Jeffersonian vision is no different. Vincent Fastabend is overseeing the project. “We started peeling back layers and we were able to look back at different mortar colors and composition, plaster,” he explains as he takes me into the octagonal building, currently gutted and teeming with workers. The goal is to restore the structure in the

same chronological order in which is was constructed. We walk inside, navigating our way around a network of scaffolding to find a pile of wood strips. “This particular one is oak but sometimes it could be chestnut,” says Henry’s sidekick and fellow Englishman, Mark Smith. Brought over from England, the lath is riven, which means it was hand split along the grain of the wood to optimize its strength. “This gives the better key because it’s kind of wobbly … What would happen years ago, the plasterers would lath everything, the buildings, in the winter and then plaster spring, summer.” We climb a scaffold to reach the ceiling Mark has been working on. He used to work with Henry’s father so the two share some history, not to mention a meticulous drive for detail, craftsmanship, as well as a collection of naughty jokes. A helper shuttles buckets of Henry’s plaster mix to the bottom of the scaffold where they are then hoisted to the top and dumped into a trough. Mixing it with a long-handled rakelike tool ensures the hairy batter a proper consistency. Mark has been performing this ritual since he was shy of 16.

“In the very beginning your arms are aching. I remember being really young. We go to work, work all day, come home and go to bed. That was it. I was so tired. But when you get older you learn different techniques and tricks — pushing as opposed to pulling — it’s just not so much of a stretch.” Loading a lump to his trowel, his shoulder and arms — could he have been a boxer? — muscle the mud forward and above his head, spreading it across the strips of newly-nailed lath. This is the first coat and it looks coarse. But after a curing time of several weeks, it will receive another coat and yet another until the surface becomes solid and smooth. Back outside, Henry is helping empty another batch of plaster where it will be wheeled over to the inside. And if you carry a full pail of plaster, your muscles are talking to you. continued on page 14

“It’s very satisfying. I feel worn out at the end of the day. You’re active, you can see the progression at the end of the day … You get to work in historic buildings. You can be threshing stuff up on the wall, then you can be doing delicate, fine decorative sort of stuff. It’s a good mix of different skills.” But those are the words of a free man and Poplar Forest — as with Jefferson’s other plantation properties — would not have existed without slave labor. Jefferson inherited the nearly 5000 acre property and its slaves in 1773 from his father-in-law. According to the Poplar Forest web site, members of seven extended slave families lived on the plantation by the 1820s. Vincent says the farm’s biggest cash crop was tobacco, but the plantation also grew wheat and raised hogs. Bricks were made on-site and that was typically slavework. Archaeologists have so far unearthed five slave cabins. For the slaves who died on the property, their final resting places remain a mystery. Jefferson’s heirs inherited some, but most were auctioned off and left the plantation. Though Jefferson managed the affairs of the farm from afar, Poplar Forest became an important part of his life in his later years. He began construction on

the home in 1806, three years before his term as U.S. President ended. “It was kind of his hideaway retreat because so many visitors were going to Monticello … this was the end of his life and he came here as a getaway,” Vincent adds. Jefferson’s last trip to Poplar Forest was in 1823, and he died in 1826 at Monticello. His grandson inherited the property only to sell it two years later to the CobbHutter family, which held it until 1946. The property changed hands a few more times before eventually being bought by the nonprofit Corporation for Jefferson’s Poplar Forest in 1984, and just months later, Henry Orton arrived on this Earth, presumably born with a trowel in his hand. “The views here ... it almost reminds me of home.” Or a getaway fit for a president. Little VICTORIES The method behind a folk singer’s music.

Bill Staines was busy setting up an array of CDs when I met him. He’s been making the yearly pilgrimage to North Branch School from his home in New Hampshire for nine years; It’s one of several events the school organizes to raise money. Development Director Bonnie Holiday led us to a bright and colorful early primary classroom so we could chat in private. Leaned up against a chair was a well-traveled guitar case. “It’s been lots of miles with me.” He’s had it since 1966, the year after he fell in love with the folk scene at the Newport Folk Festival. It was a Sunday afternoon and this Boston-area teenager got to hear Gordon Lightfoot, among others. “I came away from that concert knowing that I wanted to be songwriter.” Before that, he and some friends had been messing around in the basement as a 3-piece rock band. One of their moms interrupted the jam session with an album in her hand: The Weavers at Carnegie Hall. continued on page 18

“I listened to that and suddenly our electric guitars turned to acoustic guitars and banjos. We just fell in love with the music. My rock and roll group became a folk group.” And if you ask people who’ve followed Bill’s decades-long career, they might tell you the man is a poet with a guitar. His description of himself is more humble. “I really sort of consider myself a country folk singer without being country and western.” A country folk singer who has logged thousands of miles gigging it on the road (3,200,000 miles by his count). He pulls out a plump leather wallet and fishes out a neatly folded piece of paper. “Hillman Husky, 1959,” he reads. “44,000 miles to 92,000 miles” Cocking my eyebrow and retuning my ear to make sure I understood his words, I scribble some notes. “A British car,” he explained. “The Hillman Husky was a British car.” “So what are you driving these days?” I ask him. “A RAV-4, actually.” Unassuming and red, it could pass as a ride belonging to a North Brancher’s parent. “It’s my 21st car.” You don’t drive – much less log — more than 3 million miles on the folk circuit unless your heart’s in it. And though the stage is where Bill shines, there are always lonely stretches of road and creativity. “There have been times when I haven’t written a song in two years and then I’ll write a really good song in ten minutes.” Ballads and sing-a longs, songs about the outdoors – that’s the kind of stuff Bill likes to write about. “It’s kind of magical, actually. There are two stages to it. The first stage is what I call the conceptual stage which is basically you figure out what you are going to write about … That’s the hardest thing.” It’s what some people call inspiration. Thomas Edison was more likely to call it perspiration. 18

“The melody itself and the words just kind of happen at the same time. I kind of sing stuff to the wall and eventually something sticks.” The moment when a song comes together is like the moment when Edison’s glass globe shines. “Every day to me is like a new adventure,” Bill explains, shifting a bit on his seat. “I have these things called little victories. It’s not necessarily material or anything like that.” I ask him to explain. “This woman came up to me and said, ‘You know, I heard one of your songs on a Russian icebreaker in Antarctica.’ That’s a little victory.” And there was the time a fan approached him after hearing a song he had written about aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne. “Someone came up to me and said, ‘You know my dad was their preacher during the time the Lindbergh baby was stolen in New Jersey, and I really like this song that you wrote about them, and here’s this book.” It was signed by Charles Lindbergh. Little victory turned instant treasure. There’s a song he’s been chewing on, called “My Jenny,” Based on the little known and now obsolete U.S. Airmail Beacon System, the song is about flying the airmail in the ‘20s. Picture large concrete arrows positioned over flyover country, directing pilots to their routes. “Nobody knows this story so why not bring it to people?,” Bill says. “That’s where a song comes from for me.” Little victories. Sold! Make Your Home Steal the Show

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

I know I may sound like a broken record. Every spring I focus on how you can stage a home because I know sellers will come out in droves at the expectation of buyers being out in swarms. The spring forecast is more favorable for increased buyer activity. However, the spring market also means more competition which requires your home to be priced appropriately, well marketed, and in tip-top showing condition. There are currently more than 226 residential properties for sale in Nelson County, so if you plan to list, follow these tips to increase your odds of seeing the “sold” sign in your yard! Spring clean – A clean home appears to be a well cared for home. Before staging, a house must first be thoroughly cleaned and painted or repaired as needed. Strip to the bare essentials – Remove or thin books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear

the counter tops. Depersonalize by packing away the wall of family photos, so buyers can envision the home as “theirs” and not “yours”. Remove your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. Create positive focal points – Take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of passthru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight the key rooms – Kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter, clearing counter tops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets.

Marlo Allen

Thoroughly clean the entire kitchen and then add the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and freshen a bathroom with new towels, shower curtain, bath mats, candles, and flowers. Don’t forget the outside – Outdoor living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat your deck, porch, or patio like another room in the house. Power wash the exterior and stain or paint as needed. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Spruce up the appeal and arrange fresh flowers – Room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets, soft fabrics, and especially flowers. Fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good; consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk, or in-

doors on a foyer stand, dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser. Strive for cheerful and bright – Turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing bulky drapes or window coverings to bring the outside indoors. Appeal to all the senses – Make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. Buyers have a multitude of options. If you want your home to steal the show, you had better get to work!

The basement is open and spacious and can serve as a family, media, or rec room with mini-bar. Hate going to the gym? No problem; exercise at home. Work from home? Great; use the home office with high speed internet. Don’t want your treasured car in the rain? Park it in the 3 car garage. Need a little R&R? Recharge on the private back screened porch or deck overlooking the woods adjoining the nature preserve. Many extras!

YAK MEETS WOLF A nano brewery gets a taste of Tibet.

MARCH 2018

Donning the appropriate attire of a University of Virginia student pursuing a PhD in Education (grey sweater, khakis and a pair of Blunnies), this son of a Tibetan yak herder is making beer. “They don’t understand,” Tsehua says of his parents, chuckling. “’I thought you had graduated already. Why do you need to go to school again? Nobody goes to school [at your age]. We also don’t know why you need to go so far away?’”

Born in his grandparents’ home 34 years ago, Tsehua didn’t have formal schooling until age 9. Learning English gave him an edge, which is why he’s at UVa as part of an exchange program introducing young Tibetans to entrepreneurism and the region’s wine and beer industry. Danny Wolf, the brewmaster at Wild Wolf Brewing Company, was part of a 4-person American delegation that spent two weeks in Tibet last spring. continued on page 26

“I was in a barn brewing beer in Tibet with really old equipment but we made it happen,” he said, taking a break from the collaborative beer the group is brewing. “One of the things I insisted on doing when we were there was using some of the authentic Tibetan barley that they have everywhere. None of them actually thought of putting their barley into a beer.” That’s because barley in Tibet carries an entirely different meaning than it does here in the States. “For yaks we use milk, and with milk we create cheese, butter and then with the barley we roast it and grind it,” Tsehua explains. “The flour is called tsampa. With that we eat butter and the cheese. That is our main diet.” “Their barley is different,” Danny adds. “They hull all of it so it doesn’t have any husks, so we can’t really malt it. What we did is we milled it up and pre-cooked it so it was gelatinized and then we put the rest of our grain on top of it.” There are smiles and laughter as the Tibetan students stir and selfie their way to a collaborative brew oceans and continents away from home. For Tsehua, you can take the boy out of the yak herd, but you can’t take the yak herd out of the boy. “We have a lot of traditional knowledge that gives us support but formal schooling is a new phenomenon in our area,” he says. “I have a hard time explaining what a PhD is. They are nomads. They have their own culture, their own skills, their own knowledge system.” He hopes to return to his homeland armed with new knowledge to advance his country’s educational system knowing full well that such a paradigm shift can be an acquired taste. It’s the kind of heady stuff best discussed over a beer or two. “Yak Meets Wolf” Danny says, revealing the name of the batch bubbling away in the tank. “It’s a beer based on friendship and dreams.” BRL STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

Bobby Solar may be from New York where the soldiers wore blue Union garb, but he moved to Virginia as a youth and these mountains are his home. He makes a living as an arborist, and Noah Greene of Arrington is his apprentice. There’s an unmistakable 4-sided stone wall enclosing a family cemetery where Old Sand Road intersects with Route 6 in Albemarle, and Bobby lives just beyond it. The chain saws are silent as he gives me a brief tour of the graveyard. “You’ve got the Revolutionary War, the start of America. You’ve got the Civil War, which is an ugly bruise of America, and you have a World War in here too.” But the one Bobby is drawn to sits on the lower left corner of the plot. “This is my favorite. The Revolutionary War,” Bobby points, the leaves crinkling beneath us. “BENJAMIN HARRIS,” the marker reads. “CAPT CONTINENTAL LINE REV WAR.”

“I mean, that’s the start of America. That’s the start of us. That’s the start of freedom, right here.” An empty tractor trailer zooms by, on its way to US 29. Capt. Harris was at Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis and his General, none other than this country’s first president, must have made an impression on him. His son bears his name: George Washington Harris. “He’s the one that started it all,” Bobby says, referring to the Captain. “His grand kids died at 20 and 21 in the Civil War … there’s his wife.” We crouch down to read the inscription: “BUSHROD W. & GEORGE N. HARRIS, Twin sons of Col. G.W. & M.M. Harris, Born Jan,. 11, 1842.” Two Virginia boys who shared a birthday, a war and a tombstone.

Though some of the tombstones are difficult to read with the naked eye, charcoal rubbings reveal the inscriptions. Bobby Solar of Solar’s Custom Arbor Care, along with apprentice, Noah Greene, are cleaning up the overgrown cemetery outside Esmont. continued from page 31

The 1868 writings of Rev. John E. Edwards describe the Harris’ idyllic upbringing in a devout Christian family. “Mountains, in endless chains, swept around them.. Landscapes of unrivalled beauty, made up of cultivated fields, dotted with clumps of stately trees, skirted with forest-crowned hills, and inlaid with flowing streams, lay near at hand; while, in the background, the many-colored mountains, with their ever-varying hues of blue and purple, formed the framework of a picture that would have fascinated the eye and thrilled the heart of a Claude Lorraine [sic], a Church or a Turner.” In other words, the Harris boys grew up in paradise and their home near Howardsville was known as Mountain Grove. They had both landed teaching jobs in Rockingham County when the war broke out. Grandsons to a man who served under George Washington, and tethered as they were as twins, Bushrod and George enlisted with the “Howardsville Grays,” which later became known as Company D, of the 19th Regiment of Virginia. J. J. Hopkins of Albemarle was their captain. “I certify that on the 17th April, 1861, I enlisted, among others, George N. Harris, and his brother, Bushrod W. Harris, in my company which was preparing to repel the invader of our soil. I was in command of the said company about one month, during which time I was particularly struck with the soldierlike conduct of these young men, who gave great promise of usefulness to our cause, and was not at all surprised when I heard of their chivalrous bearing in the hour of battle. They deserve to live in the hearts of their countrymen. (Signed) “J. J. Hopkins.” That all Civil War soldiers died on the battlefield in a blaze of glory is a misnomer. After going into camp at Centreville, the brothers came down with measles. George got it first and was sent to Culpeper to heal where he didn’t stay as long as he should have. The day after George returned to camp, Bushrod was stricken with the disease and died four days later. In spite of a subsequent relapse, George lingered on, only to die on the battlefield at Frazier Farm, from a bullet to the heart, exactly one year to the day of his brother’s death. 32

A woman wearing a University of Maryland sweatshirt walks up the lane, and introduces herself as Diana Currier. “It used to look like this,” she says beaming at Bobby and Noah’s work, “until it had gotten overgrown and everything.” There’s a big cedar that Bobby says is mostly dead but if they can salvage the trunk, the wood would make a nice bench for the cemetery. But a stories-high tree doesn’t come down gently unless its arborist knows what he’s doing. “Targets,” Bobby says, surveying the array of aging slabs before him. “Targets that you can’t replace in this situation. If it was a bench or a bird feeder or a light, you can go to Lowes and get something. Some of these you can’t even read anymore.” The men get back to work. Bobby shimmies up the generous tree and starts sawing off limbs at the top, working his way back down. This way, the tree comes down as a thick pole, free from branches that can damage anything underneath. As thick as Bobby’s hands are from years of handling logs, today they prove that they can be patient and precise. With Noah’s help, the stump goes down, its roots forever interred among the fallen. “It looks wonderful,” Diana notes. Bobby agrees. “You drive by a lot of cemeteries but this is different. I don’t know how to describe it.” History buried, but not forgotten. BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

The Courtyard Many moons ago, while my Spanish was crude at best, I lived in Sevilla (or Seville) Spain for just over three months. Perhaps one of the most beautiful regions I have ever visited in my life, Sevilla is a land impacted by centuries of wars, invasions and is host to some of the most wonderful architecture I have ever seen. In my mind, I still enter the courtyards of Sevilla, loaded with stonework, a fountain or pool, the smell of Jasmine in the air and flowering Bouganvilla enveloping a tall adjacent wall. Courtyards are very focused – architects frame areas with structures, a stone arch in Sevilla, allowing guests to only see a small aspect of the garden as they enter. Once you enter, the courtyard opens up often to a water feature, either a slow flowing, very symmetrical/rectangular pool or a large multi-tiered fountain with water falling from a small basin into increasingly graduating ones. The plants flanked the architecture in a very formal manner, often times small oval boxwoods and upright (fastigiate) evergreens along with roses and various other flowering shrubs. Travel back from Spain and envision a courtyard, yes perhaps a distant ancestor to those Castilian ones, but nonetheless something that will be a sanctuary for you and guests alike for years to come. Perhaps one of the most important and appealing aspects of the courtyard is that it must be compact or intimate in size – often times only a couple hundred square feet. The shape can be just about any shape, ranging from formal squares and rectangles, to the more free form round or oval shapes. Typically there is a stone walk that originates at the entrance and draws the eye to either an adorned exit or a structure that is worthy of some ‘show and tell’. The frame for the exterior of the courtyard is imperative. By not allowing the eye to venture further than the courtyard, the ambiance inside

creates a feeling of solitude and invites the designer to choose carefully the species of plants that are on the inner boundaries since their multi-season interest will be on full, up-close display. Large evergreen shrubs, a fence or a mixture of upright, fastigiate evergreens and small trees will create the space for the courtyard. Remember, it is not necessary to completely enclose the area, however, it is optimal to keep the area as secluded as possible. Hardscapes (i.e. estuary, fountains, figurines, etc.) within the courtyard are not optional. Within the boundaries of your new hidden garden will be focal points that will need something besides plant material to anchor them down. Choose areas that will impact a guest as they enter, as they turn (corners), and even perhaps around a small seating area like a bench or patio table. I like to tuck figurines in amongst low growing ferns or similar perennials beneath a small tree. Fountains are nice either as central focal points, visible as you enter, or flanked to one side where the flow of water aids in canceling out any competing traffic and pedestrian noise. The plant list should not be extensive and be reliable growers that offer multi-seasonal interest. From a growth standpoint, these plants should mostly stay relatively small in size since space is limited. Dwarf evergreens should be used to flank walks while perennials mixed in offer seasonal interest. There will be spaces where unique species that have distinct foliage or bark can be sprinkled in since guests will have the ability to appreciate these fine details. When it comes to perennials, don’t be scared to let a taller species that doesn’t grow large, like a fern, be in very close proximity to a Helleborus or hosta as this will aid in the overall landscaping effect. Larger perennials can be pushed more to the back with adequate space to grow.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine March 17 is the Feast of St. Patrick and is a cultural and religious celebration to commemorate St. Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. St. Patrick lived from 385 to 461 AD and according to tradition was actually born in England. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave; while there he “found God”. He made his way back to England where he became a priest, and returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. Legend has it that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland, although Ireland never had any snakes and this probably symbolizes his efforts against the druids. He is supposed to have died on March 17 which is why we remember him on that day. In some places - such as Ireland, some parts of Canada and in Montserrat - St. Patrick’s Day is an official holiday. It is widely celebrated in other countries, such as the US, UK, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. The celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, Irish traditional music

sessions, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Traditional Lentin restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are often lifted on St. Patrick’s Day. As a result, drinking alcohol, especially green beer, has become an integral part of the celebrations. So what does this have to do with medicine? Nothing really, but in the middle of winter we all need something to look forward to. The weather is cold, there may be snow on the ground and spring may still seem like a long way away. Whether you are of Irish descent or not, most people recognize St. Patrick’s Day and wear some green clothing. Some people purposely don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day and risk getting pinched. However you chose to celebrate, have fun, be responsible and remember that spring is not far away. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
