thepuplisher I write to you in the dead of Sprinter with some breaking news. The main mommy car is in the ICU after a deer decided to cross the road, presumably to get to the other side. Though beagles can’t drive, that maroon Jeep Cherokee 4x4 was my favorite. There’s nothing more liberating than riding shotgun with the windows down, letting your ears flop around in the wind to the invigorating sounds of a Metallica ballad. Don’t hate. I’m just glad the car wasn’t totaled. I mean, momma’s put more than 268,000 miles on that thing since getting it in 2001. So when she brought it home, with the deer’s tufts of fur still stuck in the grill, I was convinced it was a goner. But as they say, old Jeeps die hard. I overheard the conversation momma had with pop after the accident. “Dude, that deer came out of no where!” she said. “It came from the left and the deer broke the Jeep,” Adam clarified. “Did it go boom?” Pop asked. “No. It went BAM!” Adam said. Peyton nodded. “It went BAM. Deer bwoke the Jeep.” As they went out with a flashlight to inspect the damage, I noticed a piece above the front wheel dangling.
As pop went inside to get some wire ties, Adam shook his head to say, “Daddy, it needs a fix bolt.” The Jeep needs a “fix bolt.” Well, you know what dear family? I need my dinner! A while later, as the moon pie rose over the horizon, I heard one of my favorite sounds in nature: Pop dumping a cup of food into my metal bowl. As I slipped into my doggie food coma, I stretched out on my bed and released a few beagle sounds. I dreamed I was driving my maroon Jeep to a venison chili cook-off, air drumming to a beloved beagle anthem: Wherever I May Roam. April Fools! Nick Stafford APRIL 2014

basicnecessities By Chance Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Levity I was completely confused when I heard a human describe a wine as “a racing, bright river of red fruit intensity, with pleasing notes of berries, violets, star anise, cassis, sandalwood and just a touch of…wet dog. Really? Wet dog? The implication was a bit frightening, but then optimist that I am, I saw the silver lining: more reasons to avoid the bathtub. I was invited to try my paw at this piece, not to express my pet (no pun intended) peeves, but because of the acuity of my nose, and to me the wine smelled nothing like the above descriptors, but simply of fermented grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon to be exact. And since my nose is a thousand times better than your best Master Sommelier, do you think maybe the wine bottle bears its berry scent the way the emperor wears his new clothes? People say the monks were behind fine wine, but really it was the dogs; it was Châteauneuf-de-Pup before the church, as usual, poked its…figurative finger into things. And let’s not forget two breeds, now extinct, bred
to guard the vines: The Deerfordinner hound and the Déjeunerauxrodents terrier. My human speaks glowingly of wines that smell of “barnyard.” I too like the smell of a barnyard quite a lot but then why am I scolded when I roll about or trot in with a big mouthful of barnyard animal by-products? Kay’s pick: Jean-Michel Guillon, Gevrey Chambertin,1er Cru La Perrière, 2006 – Why do I like this wine? Jean-Michel is a consummate producer whose wines offer an example of terroir in a bottle with seductive berry and barnyard aromas. For something truly special—to savour or cellar—but always to reserve for an occasion you wish to cherish forever. $62 Chance’s picks: Faithful Hound, Mulderbosch, 2010 – Why do I like this wine? Because of the big white hound on the label. Okay, my snout actually did detect the slightest hint of star anise. See if you can too. And if anyone knows where this handsome fellow lives, pop my person an e-mail. Discreetly. They told me
specifically not to use this space as a virtual dog park. $24 M.D. 20/20 – (known in elite circles as Mad Dog). Aromas of red fruits, brake fluid and high fructose corn syrup, complemented by black berry Nyquil and funnel cake accents. I’m learning quickly…old dogs can learn new wine tasting terms. Pair with Spam, Slim Jims or Vienna sausages. Why do I like this one? The name. It adds a certain risky quality to the virtual dog-dating scene…. Chance is the resident sage at the Pfaltz household, currently working on a book, Wet Dog: Debunking Outrageous Wine Tasting Terms. On this earth for well over a hundred years, in people years, she spends her days sleeping and reflecting. And this is what she has to tell us: Help others, even animal-others. Adopt from shelters, support local farms. Get up early and go to bed when dark. Slow down. Ban multi-tasking and take lots of naps. Leave the i.pad and get outdoors to smell the air. Feel the sunlight on your face and the breeze on your skin. Take long walks in nature. Let go of the little things, and love each other more. She says humans spend too much time accumulating stuff, and on things that don’t matter, when they should just love each other. If drinking wine helps us to do this, she’s all for it.

[ nelson county ] STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER
The year was 1814. An 18-year-old William Massie had a wife and he decided to build their home at the foot of dePriest Mountain. 200 years later, a bicentennial bash awaits
Pharsalia.
A cookbook of Maria Massie, one of William Massie’s wives sits in the kitchen at Pharsalia. Pharsalia is celebrating it’s 200th birthday with a Folk Life Festival in May 2014.

WALK THROUGH THESE GATES AND PREPARE TO STEP BACK IN TIME 200 YEARS WHEN COOKING WAS DONE IN AN OPEN HEARTH IN THAT BRICK BUILDING ON THE RIGHT. NEED HAM FOR THAT BISCUIT? THE SMOKEHOUSE IS THE WHITE STRUCTURE STRAIGHT AHEAD.
In celebration of the antebellum plantation’s 200th birthday, Massie’s great-great-grandaughter, Foxie Morgan, has planned a year’s worth of events, including offering up her home to host this year’s Folk Life Festival. “I just hope that whether people have been here or not, they’ll come back and celebrate with us,” she said. Foxie and her husband have lived on the planta-
tion since 1974, but have recently (2006) opened up parts of the historic home and grounds for special events. In addition to hosting the Folk Life Festival in previous years, Pharsalia is a working flower farm and is open for special occasions like weddings. For this, the third time Pharsalia has hosted the Folk Life Festival, the focus will be on learning about the past: Ever vendor has to demonstrate or teach a craft of some kind from the early 1800s.

A TWENTY FOOT DEEP, HAND-DUG PIT SITS IN THE ICE HOUSE AT PHARSALIA. ONE REASON IT IS SO WELL PRESERVED IS IT SITS BENEATH THE LUMBER HOUSE. ICE WAS CHOPPED AND STORED IN THE PIT FOR SUMMER TREATS OF ICE CREAM AND ICED TEA.
STRAIGHT DOWN a hand dug ice pit for a glass of single malt whisky STRAIGHT UP.
So in the ice house, there will be ice cream - oyster flavored just like Thomas Jefferson ate. In the smokehouse there will be meats smoking. There will be someone hand-cutting tombstones and someone else hand-pressing cider. And in the outdoor kitchen, Rachel Deddens will be cooking up a storm - and explaining how and why. “I have studied open hearth cooking; the hearth is the early term for the workstation in front of the fire,” explained Rachel, who has been an integral part in planning the festival this year. “One of the things I think people are going to see is more old culture; frontier culture: what happened in these areas, not just at Pharsalia but all over the country.” One featured demonstrator will be Judi Harvey, an expert in something most people don’t think about these days: mourning. “Simply speaking, death was a part of daily life,” said Judi, who has spoken throughout Virginia and even discussed the history of mourning on the Discovery Channel. “Mourning is simply your outward show of respect for the ones you loved; women showed it with a black dress and men wore black armbands or removed buttons from their jackets. Grieving is an internal experience but mourning is your outward show of respect.”
Judi will be interpreting the mourning process of the plantation’s original owner, William Massie, who had quite a bit of experience - he lost three wives due to various reasons throughout his life. Judi will also discuss how his fourth and final wife, Maria, expressed her mourning at the loss of her husband in 1862. The festival, which takes place rain or shine on May 17 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and 18 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), will have a little bit of something for everyone. From plantation-style open-hearth cooking with Rachel, to Oprah Henfry, the prize-winning chicken who inspired Chicken Tractor: The Permaculture Guide to Happy Hens and Healthy Soil by Patricia Foreman, there will be plenty to do and plenty to eat, not to mention plenty to learn. “We’re kind of kicking it up a notch,” said Rachel. “When Foxie first asked me about this, we talked bout making it a festival that’s not so much just crafters, but an opportunity for educating the public about lifestyles of the past and looking at the early 19th century lifestyle, which is what Pharsalia is.” And Pharsalia seems to be more than happy to share it’s past with everyone willing to listen. “There’s something about Pharsalia that is just very peaceful,” said Foxie, who’s family has owned the plantation since it was built in 1814, aside from a short time in the early 20th century. “I feel like I’m just the caretaker at this point of it’s life. I feel very, very fortunate to be able to call it home but it’s been 200 years in the making and I would love to think it will be here another 200 years. We’re doing our best to keep it preserved and be able to share it with the public.” BRL APRIL 2014

AS THE SUN BEGINS TO RISE OVER THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, BE READY TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING.
Love, sweat and trails.
Francesca Conte from Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports may not be able to participate in the races she coordinates, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t run the trails. “Both my boyfriend and I have been living in Charlottesville for the past thirteen years now so we’ve been running these trails forever. When we decided to put an event on in the area, we really wanted to put it on in the area where we train all the time.” Francesca and her boyfriend, Gill, started up the company in 2001 with one major concept in mind: ‘Exceptional Races on Exceptional Courses.’ On April 19 the Bel Monte Endurance Runs will feature a 25K, a 50K and a 50 miler, with a start/finish
location at the Royal Oaks Resort in Love, Virginia. “It’s really the perfect location. It’s very accessible, it’s close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, it’s the closest location to the trail system – we want to run as much trail as possible,” Francesca continues. “It’s perfect because it has a lot of cabins, so the runners can stay in the cabins the night before. It’s low-key, meaning it’s a fun family-friendly atmosphere where people can come with their family and their kids and just hang during the day and wait for the runners.” Royal Oaks Resort Owner, Keith Smith, is happy to host the annual race on the property, which is equipped with cabins, country store and covered stage. continued on page 17

“This is my third year of hosting Bel Monte Race. We’ve got a good thing going. I really like Francesca; she’s very together, she’s well organized,” says Keith. “We’re all about getting groups and organizations like Bel Monte and were getting more and more of those all the time. The words getting out there and that’s certainly a positive.” With such a strong support system behind the event, there’s even more incentive to make each year better than the last. “Keith has been wonderful and super supportive. He’s always excited about the event,” says Francesca. “He’s made changes to the resort just for the event. For example, He’s even added a hot shower for the campers.” And with the expected number of participants so high, that’s an upgrade everyone will appreciate. “We expect about three hundred people up there so we’re really happy. We get people from all over Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Carolina’s, even as far as Canada. We’re excited to see it all come together this year,” says Francesca. BRL

Spring Ahead!
athome
Showcase your home to stand out from the competition.
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
If you are like me, you probably couldn’t be happier this year to be out with the snow and in with the daffodils. Spring is in the air and so buzzes the spring real estate market. If you plan to sell this spring, you may be pondering “What can I do to help sell my home?” The key word here is “help.” While you may have enlisted the assistance of a real estate professional, never lose sight that achieving a sell is a partnership requiring action from all parties. Perhaps the best thing you can do to ensure success is to prepare your home for showing. A properly showcased home can spring ahead of the competition! Spring clean; a clean home appears to be a well cared for home. Before staging, a house must first be thoroughly cleaned and painted or repaired as needed. Strip to the bare essentials; remove or thin books from shelves,
pack the knickknacks, and clear the countertops. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. Depersonalize; pack away anything that makes the house “yours” instead of “theirs.” Take down the wall of family photos and put away the heirlooms and collectibles. Create positive focal points; take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight the key rooms; kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter,
Marlo Allen
clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets. Thoroughly clean the entire kitchen and then add the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and freshen a bathroom with new towels, shower curtain, bath mats, candles, and flowers. Don’t forget the outside; outdoor living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat your deck, porch, or patio like another room in the house. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Spruce up the appeal; room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, flowers, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets and soft fabrics. Arrange fresh flowers; fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good. Consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk, or indoors on a foyer stand, dining
434-996-3525
room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser. Strive for cheerful and bright; turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing bulky drapes or window coverings to bring the outside indoors. Appeal to all the senses; make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. In Nelson County there are currently about 326 residential properties for sale. Should you abide by these tips, the buyer may have eyes for only one! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Anya Stronova is not your typical bull rider. But then again, she’s not riding your typical bull. Anya is the 10-year-old mechanical bull riding champion of Discovery Ridge Adventure Center at Wintergreen Resort. “I think it’s because of all the legwork I use,” said Anya who spends two or three days a week riding actual horses, too. “Because when you’re riding horses, you have to use your legs a lot; if you don’t there are a lot of unexpected surprises and if you’re not prepared you’ll come off, so I really have to train how to do that. I squeeze really tightly with my thighs and my grandpa says I’m Velcroed to the seat!” Anya can’t even remember the first time she sat on the bull at the top of the mountain, but knows it was her grandpa, who lives in Stoney Creek, that took her up there. He was also the first one to get her on a horse. “She seemed to have a natural ability with animals,” said “grandpa” Marty Simon. “So I thought, ‘well, put her on a pony!” But he says he never pushed her to try mechanical bull riding - that was all Anya. “Anya you don’t encourage,” he said “Anya doesn’t need encouragement.”

One day after playing on the trampoline at Discovery Ridge, she just hopped on the bull – and surprised everyone by staying on. And today, everyone up there knows the little girl who mastered the mechanical bull – and doesn’t let her ride the easy settings anymore. “It will start spinning and bucking. I have to squeeze really tight and hold onto the rope and shift myself into position: if the bull is turning right than I turn left,” said Anya, who wants to work with actual horses (who she says are nothing like her friend the mechanical bull) when she grows up. “Horseback riding is, like, my life now. My goal is to do my best and learn as much as I can,” she said. “I’m still trying to learn my occupation, but I know I want to teach horseback riding.” She’s already practicing her teaching skills by helping others stay on the mechanical bull: “I know they can’t do exactly what I do, but I told one girl to hold on with both hands to the robe and just use your hips. And when it starts spinning around and around and around you just have to stay on.” BRL

Going MAD
WAYNESBORO
[ augusta county ]
STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER
In its third year, the MAD ANTHONY unites muddy obstacle goodness with people who love it.
Running through a park covered in mud and climbing over obstacles in the middle of winter seems like it could be the introduction to a low-budget Hollywood thriller. But it’s actually something that 500 people paid to do - for fun! - during this year’s Mad Anthony Mud Run in Waynesboro. Mud runs have been growing steadily in popularity over the last few years, so Waynesboro Director of Parks and Recreation Dwayne Jones said it was almost a no-brainer to add one to the Run the Valley series three years ago. It’s just that most mud runs tend to happen in what some may consider the warmer months. “The spin on ours was to do it in the middle of winter,” he said. “First, we didn’t have a race in February and second we wanted to start off with something that’s fun. Fun is our main goal on this race.” continued on page 30

The first year of the Mad Anthony, there were about 200 runners. Then 368. And this year about 500. The Waynesboro Parks and Rec Department is already planning for more runners next year - even as they’re working on finishing touches for the rest of this year’s races (the Park to Park Half Marathon on April 26, the 10K & 4K Race/Walk Summer Extravaganza on July 12 and the Fall Foliage Race 5 & 10K on Oct. 11). The annual Mad Anthony is just short of 5 miles and while it’s timed for the Run the Valley series, it’s not a traditional timed race. Covered in mud and jumping over walls and running through mud pits, runners have the tendency to get slowed down. But the real killer for a lot of people has nothing to do with a physical obstacle. “The other twist to our course is we actually ask a history question on the course and if you get the question right about Mad Anthony, you get to proceed quicker,” said Dwayne. “And if you get it wrong you have to do a different challenge that will slow you down.” BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC
5 Ways to Get Rid of a Long Winter I think it all started back in November as temps plunged into the teens and most of us moved inside for a long, long winter’s nap. A cold winter is welcomed by most plants as it satisfies the chilling requirements, kills some insects (yes, beneficials too) and delays flowering of many fruit crops so late freezes don’t kill blossoms. It will uncover some less than accurate info you may have received from your local garden center or other plant resource referencing cold tolerance of plants and your local plant zone. And yes, judging from the skeletons of Zone 7 plants in my personal landscape, Lovingston is a true Zone 6, still, perhaps even to the dismay of Al Gore and his ‘Inconvenient Truth’ theory – which now, after this winter’s data is tallied, more closely resembles another Big Foot sighting than actual science. So now it is time turn the proverbial winter’s page and get your landscape whipped into shape. Nothing says spring like color. Yes, it is April and yes, pansies won’t make it much past June 15 but that gives you a whopping 3 months of color – try and get that from your azaleas, forsythia or other flowering shrub. You will still be shopping for your summer annuals around May 15, so keep that in mind regarding the planting location of each. Buy the midsized bloom varieties (2” blooms) in a full 6-inch container since instant color is a must. Instead of pushing the color out to all areas of your landscape, keep this shot of color very concentrated in high visibility areas – front center, if you will. Leach the salt. Plantings that border roads or walks are susceptible to salt damage. The salt is applied and ends up in unwanted area after pushing and melting of the snow. Lucky for you, salt is easily leached
from the soil. Irrigate thoroughly and repeatedly all plantings that border roads and walks (where salt was applied) - in particular those plantings that show burning on the tips of the plant. Clean up your lines. A long winter and more than average snowfall has a way of distorting and erasing those crisp landscape lines. It does NOT mean mulching the entire landscape. It just means grabbing your spade (or hiring a landscape contractor) and rounding those lines out and then blending in a bit of mulch to clean up it all up. Remember, long flowing lines that you can drive with a SUV – no zig-zag or abrupt lines that make things look busy. Heavy snow means spells certain doom for a whole host of landscape plants – in particular broadleaf evergreens. Boxwood, Laurels, Andromeda and other bush evergreens are certain to need some clean up after our 16 inch plus snow in February. Sharpen those pruners and make a nice clean cut below the break point. For the vast majority of cases, if you remove the broken material now, masking the scar will be almost done by year’s end. Get back to the tried and true. My Gardenia and Eucalyptus lasted just under two years. Yes, I knew it was a stretch from the start but I really was trying to believe. Meanwhile, back in the border my creeping phlox, candytuft, hellebore, daffodils, dogwood and company are all budding up and blooming as if to say, ‘I told you so’. Everything this year will be late – but at least you know they are coming. Take a look back in time as to what was in grandma’s yard and duplicate. The list is short but they are the blue chips that many landscape designers reach for year after year…They work. Period.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine
A member of Sentara Healthcare.
Discover why people trust Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, I am getting terrible heartburn from eating my favorite food: PIZZA! What can I do? You have eaten a great meal of pizza with extra sauce (I, too, love pizza!), but then that evening you can’t sleep. Awful heartburn strikes and an acid or bitter taste keeps hitting you in the back of your mouth. Heartburn or acid reflux is also called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). A way to think of it is as if there is a door between the esophagus (feeding pipe) and stomach. It ought to stay closed and keep stuff down in the stomach, but certain things tend to force it open and let acids into the esophagus causing the familiar and dreaded symptoms. Common causes of GERD are tomatoes, citrus fruits, coffee, alcohol, onions, chocolate, peppermint, fatty foods, aspirin, ibuprofen and its cousins, smoking, stress, and being overweight. Simply overeating or wearing tight clothes can sometimes aggravate heartburn symptoms.
Also, lying down within a few hours of eating can produce GERD, as gravity is no longer on your side in keeping stomach juices in the stomach. So, steering clear of the foods that cause GERD, not lying down within a few hours of eating, avoiding tight clothes and overeating, and even raising the head of the bed on some bricks can all work wonders at controlling GERD. Weight loss, of course, can really help as well. If you attempt the above suggestions and can’t fix your symptoms, try some of the many over the counter medicines available for GERD. If a couple of weeks go by and your medicines aren’t helping, it is probably time to visit your doctor. Sometimes you just need a prescription medicine for a while, but occasionally there is something more going on that should be checked. Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. GOLF FITNESS CLASS Make the right choice.
Strategies for Health: Setting Goals So far this year in the BRL columns, we’ve discussed the value of health (January), return on investment (February) and mental discipline (March). The next strategy is appropriate goal setting. I have heard a variety of goals ranging from, “I want to decrease my pants’ size,” “I am hiking in Nepal in a month and want to be ready for it,” or “I want to lose 100 pounds.” Why is goal setting important? Just like financial planning, it guides us in our decision making and choices each day. If you have a certain family financial budget, you will make daily decisions about what to purchase based on available funds and funds you wish to save or invest. It is the same with your health. If you have health and fitness goals set, it guides you on food choices, sleep and exercising- basically making conscious decisions. What is an appropriate goal? 1) It must be measurable and objective. For example; lowering your blood

pressure, exercising three days a week, lowering body fat, decreasing your girth or completing a five mile walk or completing a marathon. 2) It must be achievable. Establishing goals that are not achievable result in failure. 3) Set one goal at a time. Sometimes, when starting a fitness program, folks are very enthusiastic and make many lifestyle changes at the same time. This usually leads to rebounding, a stop in exercise and a return to the previous lifestyle. Our behavior and habits are the most difficult aspect to change. Choose one change per month and avoid adding a new change if you haven’t mastered the previous one. 4) Post your goals in the bathroom, kitchen and workplace so you and your family can see them daily. This is a constant reminder to stay on track and your friends and family are your support system to help you meet your goals. Start slow and be patient with yourself yet be firm in sticking to goals and your program; remem-
