thepuplisher Well, my oh my. It’s been 10 years. 10 years since my owners bummed around town with a hot pink flex binder (so professional) telling people they’d be launching a magazine on April Fools’ Day. Contract after contract began trickling in. Back in those days, mom and dad would take every picture and write every story that went in the magazine, then called Nelson County Life. And mom would lay out the issue on a bubble-shaped iMac with a tiny monitor. I remember when that thing died. It sounded like a ping pong ball bouncing up and down. Mom said some naughty words that night. Right before the real estate bubble began bursting, my parents decided it would be a great idea to start having kids (incredible family planning!). Here came Adam and then two years later on the nose, we welcomed Peyton. Even though I predate their existence, and even though my ears are softer and floppier than theirs, those kids took over our little world in that farmhouse in Greenfield. There were toys everywhere and all of a sudden, the monthly family picture on this page included them. A kid in a diaper. A kid in a onesie. Oh look, Adam’s crocs are bright orange! Oh wow, Peyton’s Pinky bear is more brown

than pink! I’d sneak in a shot every now and then, usually when one of the kids would let me lick one of their sticky jelly sandwich fingers. Then my folks decided to expand the magazine and change the name of this magazine to Blue Ridge Life. To me, it was a big ol’ “meh.” But it turned out to be a good move, actually. More stories from our nearby neighbors in Amherst, Albemarle, Augusta, Rockbridge, and Rockingham counties. And, a fabulous team of writers and photographers who give my mom and dad a break and let them concentrate on raising these two rug rats. So as I raise a glass to this priceless rag, I also hike a leg to this proposed pipeline some people want to ram through our beautiful land, without our permission. I may be a news hound, but I’m also a guard dog. Happy April Fools! Nick Stafford APRIL 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Are You What You Drink? If we are what we eat, I suppose equally that we are what we drink. Therefore our specialized team of researchers, scientists, gourmands, gluttons and drunks has devised the following list, revealing what your wine choice says about you. You prefer: Châteauneuf-du-Pape – You love the way the name sounds when you order, except sometimes after more than two glasses it comes out sounding more like “Shag enough da pop”. Zinfandel (red) – You choose your wine based on alcohol content. Oaky Chardonnay (women) – You long to go back to your college days. Pouilly Fuissé spritzer – You’re eager to learn about wine, reluctant to let go of the past; time to let go. Cabernet Sauvignon (men) – You hark back to your pre law days; you called it “Cab Sav”. Chianti – You love all-you-caneat pasta and think Italians have sexy accents. Burgundy – You spent a semester in France; you gained 15 lbs... and a new wisdom of life. Moscophilero – You spent a se-

mester in Greece studying infectious disease. Ruby Port – You’ve been known to drink syrup. Malt wine – You daydream about the good old days when you frequented the 7/11 for fine wine. M.D. 20/20 (known in elite circles as Mad Dog) – You daydream about the good old days before you knew better… if only you could remember them. Wine with dogs on the label – You don’t want your dogs to feel left out when you’re home alone having a dance party with yourself. Wine with cats on the label – You’re trying to make your cat jealous because she turned her rear toward you when you started your dance party. Wine for $3.99 (or less) – U R not old nuf to drink but U want 2 lrn. Ssshhh. PLOS. Pinot More – You’re a senior citizen; you take a sip (or many sips) of this particular wine before bed. We have no excuses, except that it’s April, that time when we all get a little silly. Okay, stupid. Perhaps our brains turned to slush with all the snow and we’re excited for spring. Jumping past

Democracy Vineyards will be open Thursday through Monday starting in April! Noon to 6 pm

the April 1st mark, here is what we think the following organic favorites say about you. Jean-Paul Bruno, L’Ancien (old vine) Beaujolais – You’re happy, fluid, and easy-going. You have no hard edges and love a simple alfresco picnic. This Beaujolais is juicy and compliments charcuterie, cheese, cold chicken and other picnic fare. It’s smooth, with no harsh tannins. Think raspberries in the sunshine! $18.99 A. Jaume Vacqueyras, Grande Garrigue, 2012 – You’re strong on the outside, with a heart of gold inside. You do everything with gusto, and from your heart. And you’re a little crazy. Vacqueyras is like the younger cousin to Gigondas and Châdu-Pape. Smooth and lush with notes of spicy black pepper and blackberry jam―a wine to fall in love with again and again. $25.99 Naranjuez Más P’acá,2010 –You’re iconoclastic and think outside the box. In fact you live outside the box. You’re a deep thinker, a free spirit and act with integrity. Here is a dark, heady, concentrated (raisins and prunes) wine that evolves in your glass. Like stepping into another world. $14.99

ARRINGTON

[ nelson county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

The Purvis family homestead predates the Declaration of Independence. Virginians to the core, John and Ruth are waging an historic battle to preserve their farm.

SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS

Blue Ridge LIFE

Purvis family roots run deep in Virginia, as this framed genealogy chart shows. Ruth and John’s Arrington farm could lie in the path of a proposed 42-inch pipeline should an energy company get its wish. The Purvis family says the project is unconstitutional.

10

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2015

Tucked back in the midst of a 400-acre Arrington farm, on the front porch of the house his grandfather built in 1904, John Purvis sat waiting for me in his rocking chair. Donned in a pair of overalls and a trucker hat, he appeared genial, honest, and hardworking in nature. Before jumping right into the sensitive issues of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline – a roughly 550 mile, 42-inch pipeline originating in West Virginia and terminating in North Carolina – John first brought me inside his home to meet his wife of 61 years, Ruth. Then he introduced me to the rest of his family, starting more than 200 years ago with Englishman George Purvis. “My ancestors came to Fredericksburg in 1739 and they settled in Nelson County in 1768. I was born and raised here; my father and grandfather lived here,” he told me. “I have four children and my daughter lives about a mile down the road and teaches in Nelson County. Three of the kids went to UVa and the other to Virginia Tech. And they’re all gonna be affected by the pipeline because I’m leaving all this land to them. We’re trying to keep people lined up that would live on this land.” Like many Nelsonians, Purvis found the original proposed pipeline route inconvenient and invasive. “It was to come down close to my family cemetery. I have 400 acres total here, and they wanna go right split down the field. My biggest concern is the safety factor, and the next thing I don’t want to desecrate my family cemetery or the land that’s been in the family so long,” Purvis explains. “I’m mad and sad. I’m concerned for my family, I may kick the bucket anytime and be planted in that graveyard down there, and my concern is for the children and grandchildren.” In addition to the cemetery set just down the hill from their home, the Purvis property has multiple plots and burial grounds where their ancestors have been resting for centuries. “My daughter and son are coming tomorrow to spend the night and they want to look at another family cemetery we got on the top of the mountain. And they wanna go to Dutch Creek, kinda north of here, there are a couple of cemeteries over there, maybe three, they wanna visit, because Dominion [Resources] doesn’t know anything about them.” On the grounds of eminent domain, which states the government or its agents have the right to encroach on private property for public use, Purvis said Dominion – one of four energy companies involved in the proposed pipeline project – offered little warning, nor just compensation to his family for the proposed pipeline construction. Furthermore, land owners are challenging in court the constitutionality of Virginia’s Rightto-Trespass statute (Virginia Code Section 56-49.01).

continued from page 11

“They came on to us with no calling really, they sent us letters that they were gonna come on to our property in two weeks time, and attached to that original notice was a copy of the law that gives them the right to enter the property.” While Dominion also tries to prove that this pipeline is being constructed for the best interest of the public, Mr. Purvis points out more negative aspects of the project. “The safety factor bothers me. To flush those lines out they gotta have water, a lot of water, and to get that water to start with is bad, but what you gonna do with it after? It’s got agents and chemical stuff in there that we don’t want that can get into our drinking water and for cattle and anything else. And also the blasting they have to do, we’re concerned for our wells and homes, anywhere close to them.”

12

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2015

Obviously ignoring environmental impacts due to the pipeline construction and showing little remorse for the personal heartache associated with the project, Dominion may also have neglected to consider the strength of the Nelson County community. With groups such as Friends of Nelson and Free Nelson, and with members of society such as John Purvis defending their property and their heritage, this rural hamlet has proven it won’t be rolling over quietly. And while the Purvis family hopes the rerouting of the pipeline will avoid violating their family line, John also has higher hopes for the whole project. “Hopefully they’ll just leave Nelson County alone, leave me alone, as far as I’m concerned the state of Virginia.” BRL

John Purvis says his family settled Nelson County in 1768, and the proposed pipeline could desecrate several family cemeteries scattered throughout his farm. Though alternate routes have been proposed, Purvis says he hopes the energy companies bypass the county entirely.

CLIFFHANGER This year’s Wintergreen Cliffhanger Challenge takes place May 24 and Blue Ridge Life Magazine is a sponsor. For registration info, visit WintergreenResort.com and for noncompetitors, the mountain bike trail will be open to pre-ride as soon as the snow is melted.

Now that the snow is finally melting, it’s time to break out the bikes! The Wintergreen Cliffhanger Challenge, part of the Virginia Off Road Series for the third year in a row, is a five-mile cross-country loop situated on the ski slopes at Wintergreen Resort to take place May 24. “It is a true mountain bike trail with about 1,200 vertical feet per loop,” said Chris Faunce, the Challenge event director and alpine rental manager for the resort. A lot of mountain bike trails in Virginia just don’t have the elevation that the Blue Ridge Mountains offer, he said. But the Cliffhanger? “It’s actu-

It’s truly on a mountain.” The Cliffhanger Challenge (which is part of Wintergreen’s Blues, Brews, and BBQ Festival Memorial Day Weekend) will have a bunch of categories and divisions including a Beginner’s Ride (one five-mile loop), the Sports Ride (two five-mile loops) and the Pro/Open Division (three five-mile loops with cash prizes). New this year, the Cliffhanger will feature a group of junior racers from elementary, middle, and high schools as part of the national intercollegiate cycling association’s effort to encourage high schools to have cycling as a school sport. Each frame bag starts with a template. For a custom fit, buyers submit their own cut-out.

Paul then takes that shape and gets to work sewing it together by hand, allowing room for attachment straps and other accessories.

Paul took his first sewing class in 2008, putting together a pin cushion and a pencil case.

Paul sells his bike gear online but also offers some of his stock bags locally at Shenandoah Bicycle Company in Harrisonburg.

Paul Hansbarger has been riding and touring on bicycles for about eight years now and has discovered a couple of things: First of all, he loves bikepacking (that’s like backpacking, but atop a bicycle). And secondly: It’s hard to carry a tent on a bike. He started making bags to custom fit his own bike when he realized there was a market for him.

“I just kind of started messing around and trying to make a run at making them to sell them,” said Paul, who runs his business out of a room in his home in Harrisonburg. “Bikepacking is a new growing trend, or sport, within mountain biking and bicycle touring and so that’s where a lot of interest came from in Wanderlust.” Wanderlust (www.wanderlust-gear.com) is Paul’s company that sells durable, lightweight bikepacking bags and cycling gear - all designed by Paul. He offers standard insulated bags and handlebar bags as well as completely custom frame bags. Each frame bag is designed specifically for the rider’s bike because all brands, styles, and sizes are different. continued on page 20

“Basically I ask them to make a tracing - a to-size tracing - on a piece of posterboard or cardboard,” he explained. Then he makes the bags (which hold anything from tools to cooking gear) from scratch. Other more standard bags (like the handlebar bags) hold lightweight tents and sleeping packs. “You can’t really bring the whole kitchen sink with you.” A creative person by nature (he studied fine and studio art at VCU), Paul had never sewn before until a few years ago and took to it quickly. “I have kind of always been good working with my hands and making things so I took a sewing class at our community arts center in Richmond back in 2008,” he said. “It was sort of like a Home Economics class: super basic. We made a pin cushion and a little pencil case but that’s where I learned the basics of sewing and eventually ended up buying a sewing machine.” And it all took off from there. These days, he’s gotten orders from people all over the globe - Europe, Asia, Australia, and all over the U.S. and Canada. “They’re using the bags that I make on some pretty extraordinary trips,” he said. “Next month there’s a guy I’ve made some bags for doing a trip into the Sahara Desert. I have a guy I’ve made some bags for that did a race on the Iditarod Dog Sled Route … he actually placed third out of 50 cyclists. I’ve got a guy who’s heading down to Ecuador with some bags I’m hurrying to get done for him. It’s been pretty extraordinary making bags for people’s trips; I never imagined that something I made in the spare bedroom in my house would be used on the other side of the globe for someone’s crazy mountain bike adventure.” BRL

In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the glare just a little bit, adding our 3M™ window tinting to your current windows will give you more crisp high definition views. Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. In addition, these rays also cause serious harm to your skin and eyes. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Our 3M™ window tinting is a sun filter. We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They work well for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They filter 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. This new tinting is not dark, won’t bubble or fade, and will literally improve the quality of your views. Installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting, they come with a lifetime warranty. Make your home steal the show!

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

I know I may sound like a broken record. Every spring I focus on how you can stage a home because I know sellers will come out in droves at the expectation of buyers being out in swarms. The spring forecast is more favorable for increased buyer activity. However, the spring market also means more competition which requires your home to be priced appropriately, well marketed, and in tip-top showing condition. There are currently more than 300 residential properties for sale in Nelson County, so if you plan to list, follow these tips to increase your odds of seeing the “sold” sign in your yard! Spring clean; a clean home appears to be a well cared for home. Before staging, a house must first be thoroughly cleaned and painted or repaired as needed. Strip to the bare essentials; remove or thin books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear

the countertops. Depersonalize by packing away the wall of family photos, so buyers can envision the home as “theirs” and not “yours”. Remove your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. Create positive focal points; take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of passthru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight the key rooms; kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter, clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets.

Marlo Allen

Thoroughly clean the entire kitchen and then add the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and freshen a bathroom with new towels, shower curtain, bath mats, candles, and flowers. Don’t forget the outside; outdoor living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat your deck, porch, or patio like another room in the house. Powerwash the exterior and stain or paint as needed. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Spruce up the appeal and arrange fresh flowers; room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets, soft fabrics, and especially flowers. Fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good; consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk, or in-

doors on a foyer stand, dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser. Strive for cheerful and bright; turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing bulky drapes or window coverings to bring the outside indoors. Appeal to all the senses; make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. Buyers have a multitude of options. If you want your home to steal the show, you had better get to work! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

GOING PLACES

Inching closer to the brewpub at Devils Backbone, the old train depot’s relocation is part of a larger expansion plan. Seven years into the biz, the brewpub that started at Devils Backbone Brewing Company has got a new name: Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub and Meadows. And with the new name, comes some pretty spectacular changes. “We started realizing last winter that we were having a little bit of trouble where we were having more people coming into the restaurant than we could manage, in terms of seats,” said Devils Backbone founder Steve Crandall. There were 250 seats and people were still sometimes waiting hours to get some of Devils Backbone’s awardwinning beer (and fried pickles). “So we designed this beer garden to accommodate more folks that would want to come and be able to not be turned away.” The Backbone is expanding in two phases. Phase 1 entails moving the old railroad depot (once Java Depot) to make it the anchor for the new outdoor event park area, adding 300 seats, an outdoor bar, outdoor bathrooms, and a fire pit. Phase 2 will add a distillery and about 200 more seats. Phase 1 should be done in the next couple of months. Steve said that with the restaurant and beer gardens together, Devils Backbone Base-

camp Brewpub and Meadows will be able to accommodate 700 to 800 people. Though the menu will be a bit different (and more self-serve than the restaurant), the award-winning beer will be available indoors and out. And Brewmaster Jason Oliver has been taking classes in distilling to make sure the harder stuff will be just as tasty. “We’d like to lean a little more heavily on local stuff that’s been made here forever up in the nooks and crannies of the mountains,” said Steve,” but we’ll probably make some vodka and gin also. Joe Richardson, Devils Backbone Assistant Manager, said the amount of popularity the brewery has garnered is fantastic, but never stops being surprising. The new expansion, he says, will not only help give locals a larger place to grab a Vienna Lager, but also help the county to continue to bring people in. “When we started this business, we envisioned a restaurant that made its own beer,” he said. “I would love to tell you that everything we’ve done has been well planned but that would certainly take the kismet out of it and we have truly enjoyed this whole etherial feel. Things have been really marvelous; going way beyond our expectations - way beyond.” BRL

HOT GLASS APRIL 2015

“Glass is kind of a tricky material because it’s not something that people typically think of when they think of artists,” said Daniel Scogna, a hot glass artist and featured artist at the 2015 Virginia Hot Glass Festival. The Virginia Hot Glass Festival will take place this year at Sunspots Studios in Staunton on April 25 and 26. The collection of artists will not only be selling and displaying their work, but also doing nearly continuous live demonstrations. “Other festivals there are people selling their work, and they do that at the Hot Glass Festival, but at the same time during the entire festival there are various glass artists down in the studio making stuff,” said Daniel. “I think that’s really what separates us - you’re not just looking at the work, but you get some insight on what it takes.” Caroline Sheridan, the festival’s organizer and coowner of Sunspots Studios, said that there will be a big glowing studio as well as flame workers, who create small sculptures and jewelry out of fire and glass - not to mention a performance by the Judy Chops after a special glass demonstration at the end of the day Saturday.

Beneficiary Designations in Estate Planning By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC

Did you know that your Trust or Last Will & Testament may not control all your assets? Your Trust or Will may direct that certain people or charities are to receive a portion of your estate, but they might never actually receive anything. Such mistakes are preventable and can be corrected by a careful review of your overall estate and financial planning. Beneficiary designations are the “wild card” in estate planning. Primarily, the problem with beneficiary designations (including POD and TOD accounts) is that the designation on file with the financial company or bank holding the asset will control the distribution of the asset – no matter what your Trust or Will might say. For example, if you have a Will that states your children are to receive your estate in equal shares, but you have your favorite charity listed as the beneficiary on your bank CD, at your death, the charity will receive the entire bank CD and your children would not get any part of it. Since beneficiary designations “trump” your Trust or Will, the Trust or Will take second place to the beneficiary designations. Recently, I had a client who was leaving her estate to a niece who had faithfully cared for her over the years. At least, that was what her Will stated. However, when we began to review her investment accounts and bank CD’s, we quickly noticed that every single asset had a different beneficiary designation and none of the beneficiary designations was the beloved niece. If the woman had deceased at that moment (before we could fix it all) the dearly loved niece would have received nothing from her aunt. Of course, the woman quickly coordinated her beneficiary designations with her Will. Daniel Scogna fastens a handle to a vinegar cruet (above) before smoothing it to his liking (below).

Beneficiary designations are also known as transfer on death or payable on death designations, often using the acronyms TOD or POD. Beneficiary designations can be made on those assets that can be transferred to any beneficiary you desire upon your death. These types of assets are epitomized by life insurance but can include checking and savings accounts, retirement accounts (like IRA’s), 401(k)’s, bank CD’s, mutual funds, many kinds of investment accounts, and even possibly real estate (through the use of a Transfer on Death Deed). The use of beneficiary designations has become so prevalent that a person’s estate may almost entirely pass to their beneficiaries via this method! Unfortunately, many people will pass away leaving a Trust or Will that will never really do what they thought or intended because they failed to coordinate their beneficiary designations properly. Changing a beneficiary designation is easy and free with the company or bank, but should be done to dovetail with your overall estate planning goals and intentions. If you have questions or concerns about your overall estate planning, seeking the assistance of an estate planning attorney you trust may be very beneficial.

continued from page 33

The festival was started 13 years ago by Caroline and her husband (who runs Sunspots with her and is the glassblower of the family). Since there are so many art shows, the couple wanted to make sure there was a festival specific to glass art and was sure to create an even that featured an open studio to share their art with local families. This is the first year Sunspots will feature entertainment on their live stage.

Daniel said that he’s glad there’s a festival just for glass artists like himself. Not only do members of the community have the opportunity to come learn something new about glass blowing and glass art, but it’s a chance for him and other glass blowers to get together and learn from one another. “It becomes almost this fun experimental activity,” said David, who has been working with glass for 28 years now. Caroline, who isn’t a glass blower herself, says that there is something intriguing about an art form that has to be done in, essentially, one sitting. She said that coming to the festival is eyeopening to many people unfamiliar with the art because they can sit and watch a piece be completed out of nothing. “It’s just the art of glass blowing is really a fascinating type of art that goes back thousands of years,” she said. “I think people are drawn to it; there’s a magic to it - jus to watch the formless molten shape become a beautiful, crystalline, colorful piece. It happens right before your eyes.” Admission to the Hot Glass Festival is free and special activities include the Kid’s Challenge (where glass artists make pieces based on drawings by children at the Festival), the Flaming Ray Gun (where artists build a ray gun that shoots flames), and the Fire-Breathing Dragon (which features Josh Ries from Art of Fire making a fire-breathing dragon), plus wine tasting and stone carving. PEOPLE ACTUALLY PAY TO DO THIS. And judging by the growing crowds each year, the Mad Anthony Mud Run at Coyner Springs Park is catching on. This year’s 4+ mile obstacle course race challenged competitors’ minds and bodies, taking them across snowy field, over 8 foot walls, through ice cold storm drains, all for the chance to guzzle down a couple of beers at the finish line. You know, just typical stuff one might do on a Saturday morning. See ya next year!

Setting Off 2015

adventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com

Congratulations to Blue Ridge Life Magazine on 10 years of incredible reporting on the community. I also want to thank Tommy & Yvette for offering me the opportunity to bring back their outdoor column that we are calling ‘Embrace the Adventure’. Over the last 20 years, I have had many great adventures around the area and look forward to sharing these stories and the many to come with you all. I would like to start off with two stories that really strike a chord with your community.

I made my way in and found myself talking with then GM Chris Trotter and owner Steve Crandall. We discussed possibilities of creating trail running and mountain biking events for the new brewery. A follow up call one month later started what would be the next 5 years of adventures in creating fun challenging events at the brewery and surrounding areas.

Adventures with Devils Backbone Brewing Company: In the Fall of 2008, I happened across Devils Backbone Brewing Company after a trail run over in Sherando Park’s Slacks Trail. A phone call from a friend alerted to the new brewery. I found myself over by Ski Barn at Rt 151 & 664 and made an incredible discovery of a brewery that reminded me of places out West.

Adventures with Sherando Park: ‘Not your ordinary mountain bike ride’ Step back a few years to 1994 when we were new to mountain biking and starting to discover the Sherando Park area. It was sunny winter day and all seemed good to go. This adventure would teach me the unpredictable nature of the weather in the area to use for years to come. We would start this looped ride from the Mill Creek trailhead off Coal Road.

To make a long story short, our climb up Kennedy Ridge would lead us into a winter storm of snowy conditions and frozen components. Once we finished our ascent, the real adventure lied ahead. We raced down the rugged switchbacks leading into the Mill Creek Valley forgetting about the frozen tundra we left behind. Upon my first creek crossing, I found myself going over the handle bars into the freezing water with my bike racing quickly downstream. A quick chase and I was back on board riding again. After 2 or 3 more crossing without further fanfare, we were back at our cars attempting to thaw our bones. Experiences like these are what I look forward to sharing with you all over the months to come. You never know where a day may lead you. Remember adventure is everywhere. You have to embrace it. Check out the BRL Events page for some of my upcoming adventures

with my Virginia Off Road Series and events over at the James River State Park. Come on out! April 18 is our newest adventure over at James River State Park near Gladstone. See below: Virginia Off Road Series The Series is a statewide network of mountain bike races. Each race carries a unique point scale for gauging the competition. Virginia Off Road Series’ events offer varying styles of mountain bike races for all skill levels, genders and ages. www.VirginiaOffRoadSeries.com Adventure on the James Games The Adventure on the James Games are a great way to come out and explore one of Virginia’s great State Parks. These events offer a competitive and fun way for you and your family to come out and enjoy the James River State Park. www.virginiaoutdoors.com

Plants to Avoid (while still on paper) Deep in the bowels of just about every landscape architecture class, there resides a professor who has more experience on LandCAD than in good ol’ fashioned dirt. For that reason, his preferred list of plants is based more on a nursery description than your typical gardener’s reviews/ experience. Yes, his design looks fabulous on paper/a Google search and may even be admirable 1-2 years out, but once the warranty is over and the plants are truly yours, the nursery description will only be realized there in the void of cyberspace where just about anything grows. Found here are the top plants that I tend to steer my clients away from after the architect’s ink is dry. For some reason I see a lot of designs with Rainbow Leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana ‘Rainbow’) in them. Yes, this one has some interesting foliage flaunted on every description from every nursery in the US but my thoughts can be summed up with 1 word – reinstall. Good on paper and the wholesale nursery where it glows at night from fungicides to prevent root rot but terrible or dead 3-5 years out. Opt for bamboo shoved under your fingernails in lieu of this plant. I have installed this one once in my professional career but regretted it about every time I drive by it. Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea ‘Crimson Pygmy’) has unusual maroon foliage on a semi-dwarf, deciduous plant. However, it was the plant that you stumbled into half intoxicated in college while you attempted a short cut across a landscape bed – a shortcut you paid heavily for the next day due to its thorns. Loaded with 1/2” thorns, you have zero chance of encountering this plant and coming away unscathed. Yes, great for gas stations, colleges

and your evil neighbors’ border, but terrible for your average homeowner. How garden centers and nurseries continue to sell Leyland Cypress (X Cupressocyparis leylandii) with a straight face is truly beyond me. Yes, they grow like they are on steroids early and make even a brown thumb have subtle shades of green. However, once you are clear of the warranty and have already invested a tremendous amount of time and effort into the new outdoor room that anchors on this hedge, they blow over (after they have been decimated by bag worms). Oh, and not to mention the issues with root rot. Pass. Some of those specimen trees featured in some magazines seem just too tempting to resist. A couple of these are the Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) and the Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha). These are two that you truly will look up on Google after your meeting with your garden professional and say, ‘Wow honey, look at what we got coming in that spot off the garage!’ Meanwhile death awaits impatiently at your garden gate. Trust me, I’m batting 100% - all to Mount Phooey (or my compost pile). I think it is safe to say that each of these is best to enjoy at the botanical garden. There is not a nursery in this Plant Zone that is not attempting to shove this one in your car via the garden center. Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides ‘Chuck Hayes’ or similar) have a truly mystical power in the garden; the smell closes your eyes and beckons a deep slow inhale of a fragrance coveted by Chanel #5; the foliage possesses a sheen found only on plants manufactured with petroleum products. Unfortunately, the hardiness cowers under the first whisper of an Arctic blast from old man winter. Remember the one from last year? Skeleton at best…

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, What’s this about a new pneumonia shot for adults? There is a mean little bug named Streptococcus pneumoniae that makes a living out of causing nice humans like us serious diseases: most notably pneumonia (lung infection), meningitis (brain/spinal cord infection) and sepsis (blood infection). Thankfully some very smart person has come up with a way to protect us from this terrible little villain. No, not a bacteria killing antibiotic to use once someone is infected-- we have something better―a vaccine to keep us from ever getting sick with it in the first place! If you are someone who keeps up with such things you already know about the “pneumonia shot” called PPSV23 which has long been recommended for 19-64 year olds who have heart disease, lung disease (including asthma), diabetes, liver disease, and those who are alcoholic or smoke. This shot is still the go-to for that group of people. Others with decreased immune systems, or that don’t have a spleen, should get this

vaccine too. The PPSV23 is also recommended for everyone age 65 and over as this is the age where Strep pneumoniae really likes to wreak havoc. Now enter the new recommendation for a second pneumonia shot, the PCV13! This is the one kids on the routine immunization schedule have been getting for a long time starting at age 2 mos, but there are new studies suggesting it is a good idea for adults to get it too. A few adults younger than 65 years old may qualify for it (again, low immune systems), but the most widespread group it is recommended for is all adults aged 65 and older. It is given in addition to the PPSV23, so if you are over 65 and have had one it is a good idea to get the other. If you are over 65 and have had neither, I recommend you go see your doctor to get immunized and stay healthy!

theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center A Little Bit Goes a Long Way We delay, procrastinate and can find more excuses to avoid exercise than we find to avoid cleaning the toilet. The decline in physical activity has profound health issues that cumulate over your lifetime and it is a significant financial strain on the health care system because many chronic ailments can be prevented. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued ten facts about physical activity because it is now a global issue. The Ten Facts: 1. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk of death globally. 2. Physical activity is not a substitute for sport. 3. Both moderate and vigorous physical activity offer many health benefits. 4. Regular physical activity maintains a healthy body (cardiovascular, strong bones and muscles). 5. 5-17 year olds should have 60 minutes of physical activity daily. 6. 8-64 year olds should have 150 minutes of activity moderate to vigorous activity each week. 7. 65 years old and over should

also have 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week. 8. These recommendations apply to all races, genders and those with medical conditions. Each individual may have a different starting level of exercise or activity. 9. Doing some physical activity is better than nothing to improve your health and ten minute increments are acceptable. 10. The environment has an impact on physical activity. For example, places where there are sidewalks encourage folks to walk. Parks and recreational facilities provide places where individuals and families can meet for physical activity. Physical activity is as simple as walking in your neighborhood daily, timing yourself and challenging yourself to increase that time each week. It can be as challenging as training for a marathon. You may fall somewhere in between that spectrum. Often, taking the first step is the hardest. There are many obstacles ranging from time constraints to body image. Let us guide you through the process.
