from

thepuplishers We’ve been here a few months now and I must say, not only are we the best beagles yet to hike their legs on this place, but we are incredibly good looking. And agile. We scrambled up this boulder. All. By. Ourselves. The kids call it Mystery Rock. I’m not sure what the big deal is. It’s just a big rock. No mystery. That Peyton sure is something. We are so sorry we make her squeal sometimes because we’re still jumpy and our nails are a bit sharp. And Adam. He can be a little too into us. But that’s okay because we’re dogs and every little boy needs a dog, right? But here’s what drives us crazy: the grill. We’ve seen our parents put some amazing pieces of meat on that thing, only to keep most of it for themselves. Grilling meat is such an unnecessary step because baby, we like it raw. We’re trying to establish diplomatic relations with the layer flock but I’m not sure they trust us. We can’t help it if our noses are drawn to the smells of their coop. Your Sharpie marker smell is my chicken litter smell. Intoxicating.

Just a few hours ago, momma came home with a box full of chicks. We hear they’re going to the freezer when they’re bigger but goodness gracious watching them go Cheep! Cheep! in the brooder is fun. It’s like watching fish in a tank at the dentist’s office. The kids spent at least an hour handling those fuzzy things. We weren’t allowed to do that, our momma made sure of it. I’m not sure she realizes we’re believers in attachment parenting and establishing the beaglechicken bond is so very necessary to our physical and psychological development. Pfft. Humans. Humans who’ve been publishing this priceless rag for 11 years. Enjoy! Otis and Martina 2.0 Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Sense of Smell and Wine One whiff of nutmeg. It was enough to transport me to Christmas festivities of yore, eggnog concoctions and the like. Or the smell of burning leaves to zap us into instant autumn. Now, out my open window, there is the smell of the viburnum, that fleeting, once-ayear, springtime aroma, whose power of evocation I forget every year… until it blooms again — big, white and poufy — and I smell it all anew. Smell is our most primal sense. Anyone who has caught a whiff of a woman’s perfume in a busy city, only to be reminded of first love or perhaps grandmother’s house, will agree. We call these experiences Proustian, after that great master’s descriptive powers, especially as he recounts the experience of dipping into tea a single Madeleine, which then sets afloat a river of childhood recollections. In wine tasting, smelling (or “nosing” if you want to hobnob with the Soms) is the most essential step, if not the most pleasurable (which is left to the palate). If you consider that we only have a mere 10,000 or so taste buds in our mouths, compared with some 100,000 olfactory sensors,

you begin to see why we can discern more about wine from its smell than from its taste. Sniff and let your nose tell you if the wine reminds you of something else, be that something else another wine you’ve tried or perhaps something altogether different like green peppers, a wet dog, a stable, or a bowl of cherries. When the wet dog enters the stable, the smell is due less to fermentation than to maturation and aging. Cellaring adds further layers of scent, or what we call the wine’s “bouquet” versus its “aroma.” Bouquet then refers to tertiary aromas developed through aging (think woody scents, truffles, barnyard), while aroma is the more immediate and forward smell you receive, varietal characteristics like cherries or berries. It’s no wonder that words are poor descriptors when it comes to something as subtle and subjective as smell perceptions, or as exciting and mysterious as a good bottle of wine. A grape that’s easily identifiable by smell, and a good place to start, is Sauvignon Blanc. With its hallmark grassiness or grapefruit notes, it can leap from the glass announcing itself. Reverdy Sancerre, 2015 – Softer

SPECIALIZING IN

than some Sancerres, yet still offering the flinty minerality for which we long when sipping Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect pairings? Oysters on the half shell, or pair with an aged and crumbly chèvre. $22 For another smell experience, try a rosé Sancerre, made from Pinot Noir. Reverdy Sancerre, rosé, 2015 - Wine lovers have all probably heard enough descriptors about the wine’s aroma of “plum, cassis, fill in the blank.” I know, because I use the fruit analogies too. I once had a wine tasting student ask, “Are there really cherries in the wine?” Well, no, it’s just fermented grape juice. The Château Latour and the $5.99 white Zinfandel. Both the same. Well, sort of. But when there are thousands of wines, we seek to describe and differentiate, often mentally reaching for everything under the sun by way of comparison. This actually makes sense because grapes contain hundreds of compounds found in other fruits and vegetables. This Sancerre is a wine I feel truly merits my description of “aromas of strawberries and raspberries.” Not sweet, just elegant and luscious. $22

Tucked away in a garage workshop in the Belmont neighborhood of Charlottesville, Blanc Creatives is a small operation where founder, Corry Blanc, and his team of six, make hand-forged carbon-steel cookware. The products shot to fame last year after winning a best cookware award in Garden & Gun out of thousands of nominees. With orders coming in from across the country, Blanc and his team are working around the clock, but keeping up with demand is tough. The pans are currently on back order until August. “I guess that’s what people want, just that story behind it,” Blanc said. “Knowing that someone put some care into it and it wasn’t just a machine or a robot stamping it out.”

The Blanc Creatives workshop is a robust operation, where beardtrimming among employees is optional. Blanc, along with five employees, work arm’s length away from each other, hammering, sanding, welding, and using a hydraulic press to transform a 1/8”-thick piece of steel into a custom pan. “It takes about six man-hours per pan,” said Ezekiel Atwell, the manager of pan production. “In theory, we are getting about a pan an hour, which is still pretty slow.” The team repeats the process 40 to 50 times a week. Atwell says the repetition is the worst part of the job. “It definitely gets old making pans all day every day.” But the finished product makes it worthwhile.

Ezekiel Atwell smooths out the edges of a pan forged at Blanc Creatives. With each pan taking about six man hours to produce, orders are backlogged until August.

“It’s definitely rewarding work because we put a bunch of hours into a pan and come out with something that’s going to last a lifetime,” Atwell said. continued on page 12

As business continues to grow, so does Blanc Creatives’ product line. Carbon-steel cookware is the business’s bread and butter, but there’s also hand-shaped spatulas and cutting boards made from local wood, and a lifestyle line of handkerchiefs, bottle openers and cocktail muddlers. It’s all part of Blanc’s grand vision for life. “The ability to have everything in your life created by hand, that’s my grand goal,” he said. “This is just my start to get there.” A blacksmith by training, Blanc grew up in Georgia and worked for his uncle’s welding and metal fabrication business after graduating from high school. He followed a girl to Charlottesville, and while that relationship didn’t last, his love for art and working with his hands flourished. Blanc Creatives opened in 2007. A coalescing of his experiences working with metal, and training as a blacksmith, plus his time in a restaurant kitchen, led him to carbon steel and cookware. He started experimenting with carbon-steel skillets. “It’s nice to be able to have handcrafted tools while I’m cooking at the same time,” Blanc said. “It completes the lifestyle.” Blanc said the carbon steel is lightweight and nonstick. The casual cook isn’t the only one who appreciates Blanc’s cookware. Chefs at Brookville Restaurant, Mas Tapas, The Local, and Tavola all use the pans. Blanc says the more you use the handmade pans, the better they get. “You build up that seasoning,” he said. “After a few uses you can just throw a couple of eggs on there with just a tiny bit of butter and they will flip right over, nonstick.” As far as care goes, Blanc says less is more. “As soon as you’re done cooking, wipe out the grease and run it under some water and dry it off. You’re good to go.” No washing dishes ? What cook can’t get behind that? There’s also the lifetime guarantee that comes with each pan. “I think people are starting to realize that quality over quantity is a lot better,” Blanc said. “You can only throw so many things away. Why buy ten things and throw nine of them away when you can buy one thing and it’s going to last for years and you can use it over and over and over and it gets better with age.” BRL

BBQ&A

Less than half-a-mile from one of the Blue Ridge’s most fascinating natural attractions, Luray Caverns, lies one of its most mouth-watering eateries: Triple Crown BBQ. Since cutting the red ribbon in 2011, the secret heirloom methods, techniques, and recipes of husband and wife super-team, John and Joanne Coleman, have managed to generate a near-religious local following, and inspired the finger-licking contemplation of thousands upon thousands of tourists.

Blue Ridge Life: So what’s the story behind Triple Crown BBQ? Joanne Coleman: Well, we’d always had our own business—my husband still does custom woodwork—but in 2008, as the economy shifted, we started thinking about diversifying. Meanwhile, we’d always had this habit of cooking barbecue on the smoker at home as a hobby. How this developed was: My husband and I met in college, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. At the time, he was working as the manager of this really amazing, old-timey, ‘world famous’ barbeque place, Herlocker’s Park Drive-in. Thus, we’d go on picnics and he’d bring food that was always just amazing. When we got married, we got a little smoker, and, as kind of a nostalgic family activity, we’d spend a couple of days doing pork butt, chicken, ribs—you name it—and, by the end of the process, wind up with so much food we couldn’t eat it all. As such, we started having a lot of cookouts, that or we’d bringing baskets of leftovers over to the homes of friends and family members. At first, when they’d tell us how great it was, we just thought they were being cordial. However, over time, they started telling us that we needed to open a restaurant. We’d sort of shrug it off, but, as they kept saying it, and getting more and more serious about it, we started thinking about the idea ourselves. Eventually, John was surfing Craig’s List and saw a trailer with a smoker for sale. The unit looked like a food truck and he asked me if I thought we ought to go pro making barbeque. I thought, sure, let’s do it! And we did. The Triple Crown literature makes much of the fact you all are a family operation. Could you talk about where your recipes came from? Well, beyond the fact that John had a lot of experience in the business, I’d been spending quite a bit of time perfecting my sauces. My grandfather was a volunteer for the Lions Club in Washington State and was a Pit Master for many, many years. So, when John and I started getting into this, he got together with us, passed down his recipes, and told us some of his secrets. Also, we took some time getting in touch with older family members seeking out those delightful old church recipes from our mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and great aunt on either side—our recipes for coleslaw, baked beans, and corn bread came to us in this manner. And then there was a lot of tweaking on the both of our behalves. I’m from Washington, otherwise known as the apple state, so a personal twist I like to put on a lot of our recipes is through the use of apples and apple products. That’s one of my things. But really, generally speaking, I guess all those years of experimenting in the backyard and in the kitchen pressure-free sort of paved the way! Beyond the recipes themselves, you both put a lot of care into your food. What’re some of the things Triple Crown does that makes its barbeque so radically above and beyond? My husband has been making furniture for over 30 years, and, as an artisan, understands how important it is to provide the best product you possibly can. That’s a concept that we both take to heart. We take pride in making the best food we can—if it’s not right, it’s not going out the window. Along those lines, we use as many Virginia products as we possibly can. And we do small-batch cooking… During the high season, 75 percent of the time we’ll sell out by the end of the day, because we cook fresh, and we’d rather run out than sell old food. Everything that is cooked—except for our corn muffins—is cooked in our Southern Pride smoker. So there’s always that extra special burst of flavor. And then, John has his own special secret blend of wood that he uses, as well as a variety of rubs he’s worked very, very hard to develop. Furthermore, we do a lot of behind the scenes work over the course of the week prior to opening on Fridays. We spend full days in the kitchen together—we get the meats and spend time applying the rub, allowing them to marinate overnight; and we have to make sauces. What does the future hold for Triple Crown? We’ve talked about branching out one day. However, if we do that, we want to make sure we bring the same level of customer service and personableness to that venture. Right now, our customers make special trips to see us and we’ve developed great relationships—we know such-andsuch will be here on Saturday at 11:30 am, and if they don’t show up, we may send someone to find them, it’s that regular! So, whatever we do, we want to be sure to remain true to that bond with our customers. BRL

NELLYSFORD

[ nelson county ]

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

It seems like the Nelson Farmers Market has been here forever, but folks who have lived in the county for more than 19 years will tell you that’s not actually the case. “When we started, it was just for fun and there were maybe 10 or 12 vendors. We were all one of each - one mustard person, one bread person, one flower person,” said Foxie Morgan (the flower person). “And then it just grew from there.” Foxy, who was one of the original vendors in 1997, is still selling her plants and flowers as part of the Nelson Farmers Market Cooperative today, but stepped down from her position on the board a few years ago. She said that despite all of the changes that she’s seen over the years, the market is still a great place to be - for her, for the vendors and for the people who support it.

IN SEASON Nelson Farmers’ Market kicks off 19th year

“It’s a different ball game now,” she said of the market that now has 70-plus vendors and a waiting list every year. “But ti’s still fun. I really enjoy it. I love getting to know my customers. People are very loyal to the market and I think they really enjoy being there.” Dickie Brothers’ John Bruguiere, another founding member of the market, agrees. He’s quick to point out that they’re still a producer-only market (all vendors must produce their own good not more than 75 miles from Nellysford), but that while the new version of the market is indeed different, it’s for the better. “The market has morphed a bit,” said John. “The number of crafts people and artisans has increased and it’s quite a social atmosphere. Diehards come early to get what they want and leave, but there are folks who come to socialize mid-morning and they stay and chat and listen to live music.” This year’s market opens for the first time on April 9 with a brand new tent and a handful of new vendors. Staging your home to spring ahead of the competition

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Spring can breathe new life into the housing market. With the April showers and May flowers come more buyers… and, oh yes, more sellers. If you are planning to sell your home this spring, you need to differentiate your home. How? Consider price, marketing, and condition. Set a market-driven price, hire an agent who will aggressively market your home, and make sure that your home is in tip-top shape. Here are a few staging tips that can help your home spring ahead of the competition. Give priority to these first three tips, some of which cost nothing more than a little time and energy: De-clutter! Have a yard sale or rent a storage unit. Remove books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear the countertops. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnish-

ings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. If your house is jam-packed, it may not appear spacious enough to the buyer prospect. Fix it! Minor repairs and/or renovations can have major payoffs. Leaking faucets, squeaking doors, torn screens, un-caulked tubs, scuffed walls, and dated wall wallpaper or fixtures can dampen a buyer’s enthusiasm. Fix those problems, so the buyer feels excited about the possibilities, rather than overwhelmed with deferred maintenance. Spring-clean! A clean home is refreshing, rather than the depressing alternative. Go beyond dusting and vacuuming, and truly deep clean everything from floor to ceiling… yes even the cobwebs and dust gathered in the fans and those other hard to reach places. If you don’t do windows, than hire someone!

Marlo Allen

Other staging considerations: Create positive focal points. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight key rooms. Kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Even if these rooms are not the most modern, they can appear “newer” and more inviting with the right touches. Consider replacing light fixtures, faucets, or drawer pulls if needed. Otherwise, dress the rooms with a splash of color to accent the space. Kitchen: fresh flowers, bowl of fruit, new sink mat and towels. Bathroom: Fresh flowers, fragrant candle, new bath mat, towels, and shower curtain. Cultivate curb appeal and accentuate outdoor living space. Buyers may never get inside if the

434-996-3525

outside doesn’t have curb appeal. Power wash, paint, landscape, and mulch as needed. Makeover the deck, porch or patio; cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Strive for cheerful and bright. Turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing heavy, light-blocking window coverings. Appeal to all the senses. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. Buyers have options; make your home “The One”! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Students at Amherst County High School are busy as bees preparing for the first Amherst Honey Bee Festival this April. “It all came about as a way to connect with the community and also raise funds for education here in our area and also give real-world practical learning experiences to our kids,” said Steve Wilder, a teacher at Amherst County High School and the festival coordinator. Students in his entrepreneurship class are responsible for organizing the entire festival, including tasks like building the festival website, recruiting vendors and sponsors, and managing the different events. Christopher Tomlin is an eleventh grader at the high school and has been charged with creating the layout for the festival. With more than 100 craft and food vendors signed up, dozens of community sponsors, performers, and bee observation hives, that’s no easy task. “We’ve constructed a layout of the parking lot where the vendors will be and a layout of the gym where crafts will take place,” Tomlin said. “It’s been an interesting experience getting involved with the business world.” Wilder said the class decided on giving the spring festival the honey bee theme to highlight its importance in the local economy. “The honey bee is an incredibly important creature for our economy because we have so many orchards, with the apples and peaches,” he said. “All the fruits are pollinated by honey bees.” Along with several vendors dedicated to bee keeping, starter kits will be available. Glenn Clayton hopes to pass some of his knowledge about honey bees onto future generations at the festival. A beekeeper since 1964, or “for a few days now” as he describes it, Clayton retired to Nelson County from New Jersey and brought his bees with him. He will be manning the stand for Hungry Hill Farm at the festival, where festivalgoers can buy honey and bee keeping supplies. There will also be an observation hive for people interested in learning about bee keeping. “Most all of your beekeepers are like me, whitehaired - if they have any hair-and we need younger blood in the beekeeping industry,” Clayton said. “The only way you’re going to get that is by getting the word out and indoctrinating some of these youngsters interested in beekeeping.” BRL

You’ve probably heard the term “Power of Attorney” or “Durable Power of Attorney” in the context of aging loved ones. It is important to know what these terms mean and how they might affect you or someone you care about. Giving someone “Power of Attorney” or “Durable Power of Attorney” over your affairs allows him or her to make financial decisions on your behalf. A traditional “Power of Attorney” authorization ends when the principal becomes physically or mentally incapacitated. A “Durable Power of Attorney” remains in force even if incapacity occurs. Both are great legal tools that we should all consider using—at any stage in life—so our financial needs are handled for us when we’re too busy to handle them ourselves or when unfortunate things happen. If you have a Power of Attorney authorization in place, whomever you designate as your agent can pay your bills, sign checks, manage your investments, and make other important decisions that might otherwise be overlooked as you focus on other things, like your health. Notably, Power of Attorney does NOT apply to medical decisions. For that, you’ll need an “Advance Directive,” which is a separate but equally important legal tool. Usually, agents given Power of Attorney act prudently when managing their principal’s affairs: Mortgages get paid on time; cash is safeguarded; and expenses are monitored. But what happens if an agent abuses his or her powers? Unfortunately, this happens more than you’d think. Too often, the agent mismanages their principal’s finances, leaving loved ones feeling helpless to prevent further waste and diminishment of resources. This usually occurs under a Durable Power of Attorney when the principal is incapacitated. When this happens to someone you care about, you have options. Close relatives and anyone else with “sufficient interest in the principal’s welfare” can ask a court to modify the Power of Attorney authorization. If good reason is shown, a judge can limit the powers of the agent, require a detailed accounting of their actions, and even terminate the agent’s authority. In extreme cases, the agent may be required to repay any money they may have lost or squandered. Do not hesitate to take action if you suspect your loved one’s agent is not carrying out their duties properly. Talk to a local lawyer about Powers of Attorney. Doing so can provide great peace of mind for you, your family, and your friends. They can evaluate your situation and create a customized authorization tailored to your specific financial needs, and help you choose the right person to handle your affairs. They can also help if you believe your loved one’s current agent under a Power of Attorney authorization is abusing that position. Get in touch today!

Dr Livingston, where’s Indiana? The “Adventures of Mystical Paul’s Creek;” the source has been discovered and it’s amazing! Neil Richardson and I took a new approach on our quest to find the source of Paul’s Creek. True to the spirit of Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark – with whips and hats a blazin’ – we approached from Wintergreen’s Crawfords Knob Preserve (Top of Crawford’s Climb behind Stony Creek. Take the fire road to the right.). Fortunately, no natives were close on our trail with only a few squirrels to fend off. But if the natives were restless, this would be a great trail run as well since fire roads of moderate grade make up this trip. With a few zigs and zags at the beginning, the majority is straight-on fire road that comes in and follows Paul’s Creek to its source. And in true Indiana Jones style, you begin to hear the Falls of Pauls

in the distance as the fire road makes its turn to higher elevations. Again, a short lived moderate gain in the fire road is all we are talking. Thick underbrush kept us from discovering the mystical Falls of Pauls. We will return! Above the Falls of Paul’s, our long lost source of Paul’s Creek was discovered! Tap dancing across the rocks much like Indiana did in his lair, I found myself dangling from a vine with Neil screaming “Give me the idol!” Paul’s Creek’s source is a meeting place of many smaller creeks and springs. All flowing from slightly higher elevations, we were pretty close to the Lost Ark at that point.
The final twist to our expedition was a yellow gate across the fire road to the left of the intersection (Sorry, no FR numbers were found). We headed higher with provisions running low, we continued as daylight was still on our side in hopes of finding the Blue Ridge Parkway,

Much to our amazement our expedition concluded at an overlook across from Wintergreen Resort’s slopes. It’s a fascinating view this time of year because the slopes were the only source of white stuff called SNOW! Shifting gears, March 5th marked our first race of the season out at James River State Park, a 3-hour adventure race. We had teams of three and four scurrying around the park searching for our markers trying to win an entry for the upcoming Happy Mutant Adventure Race in early July out at Lazy Days Winery. Richmond ASR won an entry in the Happy Mutant’s 300-mile/72-hour event with a time of 2:05. Team CYS takes the entry into the Happy Mutant’s 100-mile/24-hour event with a time of 2:32. For more info, visit the Happy Mutants online at www. theHappyMutant.com. April 23rd, the Adventures on the James continues with the Adventure Triathlon:

Early Spring Work = Better Gardens So we have turned another corner of this Blue Ridge life and winter fades into the history books. Now comes the time to whip your landscape into shape with a handful of quick fixes that Mother Nature and your snow plow driver may have left for you to fix up. Bare spots in the lawn from the plow, leaves and limbs in the grass from blustery winter days, leaves and debris in the drainage ditches from a host of leaves that hit the ground in November – now is the time to jump start your summer landscape and get things off to a positive mental attitude. Mainly, this is YOUR landscape – own it! Snow plow cuts in lawns can be severe when snow piles are deep and operators have no clear distinction between lawn and drive. First rake out the area and add high-grade topsoil where appropriate. Sod is the best but seed works as well. When using sod, cut out squares or rectangles in the damaged area(s) so that it fits well and then pack the added topsoil with your feet, leaving the grade about 1 inch shy of the existing lawn (this will allow for the sod to be at grade with the rest of the lawn). Water well. If you decide to use seed, add the topsoil flush with the existing grass and gently pack the area with your feet. Rake the area to get good soil to seed contact and then add turf-type tall fescue to sunny areas or red creeping fescue/bluegrass to shady areas. Gently rake again to get good coverage of seed and soil. Add a cover of straw (not hay) and water well. To both, add pelletized lime and fertilizer according to bag instructions. Remember, water is the key to both. A client of mine once said, “If you see a leaf in your lawn, grass is not going to grow there.” Truer words could not be spoken. This also

applies to limbs and other debris. A clean strong growing lawn is the result of frequent blowing and raking (when necessary). Now is the perfect time to both blow and rake the lawn of litter to allow for maximum coverage of new grass roots and seedlings. Most grass grows from modified shoots or rhizomes that creep under the soil and emerge as new grass. Keeping the lawn free of litter is imperative to not choke out these new seedlings. No matter the grass program you are under with a lawn professional, omitting this key step spells weeds and bare spots in summer. Drainage ditches are under assault in the fall due to falling leaves. Add in winter’s snow and ice weight and limbs find there way into the same area thereby creating a dam that will undoubtedly clog drainage areas and cause them to fail. Spring and summer downfalls are just around the corner and water can cause thousands of dollars of damage in minutes. Clean all debris from your drainage areas and replace any stones that may have been twisted or turned – the smoother your drainage area, the more litter and soil that rains will carry off. Early season weeding is imperative to a beautiful landscape. Weeds that are growing now will sink deeper roots and create a haven for the next batch of spring and summer annual weeds that are just around the corner. By weeding now, you can effectively remove the tender and shallow roots more easily and, with a small shot of mulch, repair the beds to cover the wound. Add pre-emergent herbicide if you are into such. I personally have two young-uns running and digging around (most of the time barefooted and scantily dressed) and I just bank on mulch, good plant coverage and a little elbow grease.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My child gets a lot of sore throats. How do I know when she has Strep throat?

Route 151 Near Wintergreen 434-361-2121

TuckahoeAntiques.com

Good question. As any parent knows, the sore throat is a very common symptom. I think every day I see at least one patient that has one. Most times it is caused by a virus. Also, especially this time of year, allergies can cause a sore throat. Strep, however is an important consideration. Strep throat is caused by a certain bacteria called Group A Streptococcus. It is most commonly found in kids aged 5-18, but can really occur in any age group. If left alone, a patient with strep throat will usually be sick for about a week, and the worst of it will last for the first few days. One might ask why we bother treating strep with antibiotics if it will get better on its own? If left untreated, it is possible for rheumatic fever to follow a strep infection. But if we destroy the strep, then that risk goes away. Common symptoms of strep throat include very sore throat,

Discover Why fever (often above 102), no cough, swelling of the lymph nodes (glands) in the front part of the throat, swelling of the tonsils, redness of or pus on the tonsils, and sometimes nausea. Mothers often can hear a difference in their child’s voice or even smell a difference on their breath. Sometimes the patient has a rash as well, red and sandpaper-like. When there is a rash with strep throat we call it scarlet fever. The treatment for scarlet fever is the same as that for strep. So, if you or your child has a sore throat and a fever that lasts more than a few days it is time to come in to the doctor. Sometimes it is possible to decide whether to treat or not just based on symptoms, but often we do a quick test to be sure. The treatment is antibiotics for 10 days. After 24 hours the patient is no longer considered infectious. Hope this helps! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
