thepublishers We are some lucky April nimrods. Not only did we launch this priceless rag 13 years ago on April Fools’ Day, but when spring roared in like a lion this year, we dodged significant catastrophe. Our home was built by a Confederate soldier during Reconstruction, a period spanning about a dozen years in which the South literally rebuilt itself. For John Cheatwood Turpin, that meant building a home, starting a family, and somewhere along the way, planting a maple tree. Judging by the looks of it when we moved to the farm, the stately maple had battle scars of its own. The survivor of an apparent lightning strike, the maple had grown gnarly over the years, shedding bark off of one side, its lumbering limbs leaning away from the house, favoring the driveway. It’s the perfect tree for a swing that our kids could enjoy. Their kids likely wouldn’t. The winds began after the sun went down and the moon came up. Adam and Peyton slept soundly but the howling kept us up. The chickens were safe but the pigs were roughing it. We had crankstrapped their shelter to t-posts and rebar just in case. It worked. The winds were still gusting the

morning after as I gathered scattered limbs from the driveway as I left the farm. Tommy texted me within the hour with the news. The kids were in our bedroom when they heard something move outside. Stepping out of the shower in a sounded-like-a-freight train towel, Tommy looked out the window: The massive maple gave it up like Lee at Appomattox. Men with chainsaws swarmed the fallen tree that afternoon, including one with bulging biceps larger than Popeye’s, no lie. We’ve already burned some of the maple logs in the wood stove (Virginians know what it is like to experience the seasons in the span of a week). The creekside campfire now has new seating and the Staffords are merely doing what Southerners do best: Reconstruct. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford APRIL 2018

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine tasting terms: wine txtese With technology whizzing at full tilt, there’s an app for everything including, or especially, wine. And with today’s texting generation, there’s a way to chat about it. Feeling old? Feel free to refer to our Basics friendly Txtese Guide whenever you feel clueless. FODBDWC – Fear of dying before drinking all the wine in your cellar afflicts the older than 65 crowd, the phobia intensifying as the age increases. The antidote: Invite over all your friends every night to help you drink it until that fated day arrives. FONHLWA – Fear of not having the latest wine app is the creepy feeling that comes over you when standing before the Charles Shaw Pinot Grigio in Trader Joe’s wondering what the predominant grape varietal is. The antidote: Read the label. FOMOW – Fear of missing out on a wine is a common phobia among wine connoisseurs. The remedy: Develop your own taste

and style and stick to it (even as it changes) no matter what he wine gurus say. FODBW – Fear that others are drinking better wines than you are. The remedy: See above, and ask yourself, “Does it really matter?” FOFWWG – Fear of forgetting where you put your wine glass. This can afflict the old and young alike. The antidote: Classes in mindfulness. Practice presence. Awareness: Be aware you’ve drunk a glass. A bottle. ODISWIMP – Oh drat, I spilled wine on my device. No explication necessary. The antidote: Turn off your device; you’ve ruined it. Pour yourself a glass of consolation wine. FOMAT – Fear of morning-after texts. Therapists have been noticing an increasing number of Millennials who fear checking their phones in the morning. Wine. The remedy: Drink wine or text. Don’t do both. FOWGGIH – Fear of wine guzzling ghosts in your home. A phobia that occurs after you’ve poured the first glass and you go to pour a second (or third or fourth, who’s

counting) but the bottle is empty. The remedy: Set up video cameras around your wine racks. Or use your fingers to count glasses. FO2MW – Fear of too many wines you haven’t tried and will never be able to try them all. That’s life. Just drink what you like and enjoy. Ah well, to paraphrase the Tappet brothers, you’ve wasted another precious moment reading rubbish. Happy April Fools Day. Perhaps a fast-paced, tech driven world is inevitable, but if you know us here at Basics, you know we’re decidedly low-tech. The remedy the Basicsway? Gather your friends, pop the cork and throw out the mobile phone. Or at least turn it off for a few sunlit hours. Pour yourself a glass and soon you’ll forget to worry your latest worry. Warning: the surgeon general has determined that the consumption of wine is excellent for the moral if not for the memory. Drinking during pregnancy can cause your baby to think he/she knows more about wine (and life) than you do.

“Top of the hill is the best place to park,” reads the message Salena Hitzeman sends to my phone after telling her I am on my way to her farm in Arrington. With the morning’s chores done and little Rowan not due back for a while, we are seizing the peace of a quiet hour with a quiet woman. When it comes to verbal economy, Salena is frugal. Volume and verbosity aren’t inspirations. “Being self sufficient. It’s always been a goal, I guess,” she shares as she hands me a cup of freshly made coffee poured into a mug made by a local potter. “Making as little impact as we can I guess, although it’s always a challenge … especially when you are trying to make the land arable. You do have to massage it to how you want it to be.” Gardening on a wooded rocky hill isn’t easy and Salena knows that. And she knows that if you’re going to think long term and live a self sufficient life, you have to work with and make peace with the land, not go to war against it. A recent wind storm that downed trees all over the county spared

this mostly hardwooded parcel, though sizable drifts of leaves have banked up against her fencing. The optimist would say the compost pile just moved closer to her vegetable beds. “When you build up the health of the soil in your environment, then things can fend off diseases and pests that way. The more I work here every year it gets a little bit better. I see more life in the soil and I have fewer problems. I see a lot more insect diversity too if I start looking.” It’s the little things that matter. Both in Salena’s farming and in her art. “Seeing the exactitude and attention to detail that an artist like Salena does is always so inspiring and it makes you look at the natural world in a different way,” remarks Elise Lauterbach, the executive director of the Nellysford-based Rockfish Valley Foundation. “And you notice details and shading like hairs on plants that you don’t notice in the real world. That’s what botanical art can really teach us as observers of the natural world.” continued on page 14

After Salena’s husband, Ezra, helped build a play area at Spruce Creek Park — complete with a mud kitchen for kids who like getting messy — Salena approached Elise about creating artwork for kiosks along the adjoining trail system. “Three months later she emailed it and it was done and totally beautiful and that’s inspired us to ask some other local artists to create other pieces of art for kiosks,” Elise says, her face beaming. No stranger to brush and canvas, it’s always a treat when fellow artists like Elise and Salena can collaborate on “official business.” “There are lot of spring ephemerals that you would commonly see in March or April and then going into the summer jewelweed and fire pink, bloodroot, wild geranium, Solomon’s seal, wild ginger,” Salena notes. These native plants, along with trout lily (erythronium americanum) adorn the 22 x 30 inch gouache on paper original sitting in her studio. “There’s a micro focus but it also makes you realize the enormous complexity of the smallest living thing, the smallest bit of a flower,” Elise adds, sounding more art appreciator than executive director of a non-profit. The irony isn’t lost on us that as we focus attention on the small

Soon after local builder Ezra Hitzeman helped build a play area at the Spruce Creek Park in Nellysford, his wife, Salena, suggested adding artwork to kiosks along the adjoining trail system. Her “Wildflowers of Virginia” poster will be one of several works artists can share with the Rockfish Valley Foundation. For more information, visit rockfishvalley.org.

things inhabiting this county, people living near Wintergreen woke up this week to the sound of chainsaws and trees falling in preparation for a controversial pipeline. Salena and Elise are both parents who are drawn to the land, hopelessly tethered to it in art and in motherhood. “We’re not here for very long,” Salena says when I ask her about the pipeline, which if completed, will put the trail kiosks in the blast zone of a potential man-made catastrophe. “The Earth is ambivalent to our existence and if we have a short sighted view of how we want to treat it then we’re not going to be here very long either as a species.” Elise, whose farmhouse sits on a hill overlooking the proposed pipeline route, agrees. More reason to pause and appreciate the little things. “It does seem important to stop and mark the things that matter. And they’re the things that are going to persist after the devastation up the road … they’re going to come back. It’s nice to contemplate the things that nature is making instead of the things that people are making right now.” Like impatiens capensis, that delicate orange bloom known as jewelweed — a natural poison ivy and bug bite reliever — that thrives along the streams our children have rightly claimed as theirs. “Seriously?!” “Yes, back up.” “That’s it?” “Uh, huh.”

Through Lois’s eyes I’m seeing Martin Harness Shop for the first time, again. It is in fact, a long, low, ‘50s-vintage chicken house. The only indicators that this might be the place: the handpainted sign back at the end of the lane that points “Harness Shop”, the old pile of scrapped leather by the unmarked door, and the little marquis indicating hours of operation that, upon reflection, might actually pertain to the defunct chicken house. Stepping inside the first sensory perception is the scent of leather. Eyes adjust to the sunlight coming through time-dusted windows. On the left, a wall of bits and horseshoes, to the right, a rack of bridles and halters. Ahead, an enticing jumble of leather, tools, and specialized machines. One more deep breath of the richly scented air before diving in. David Rhodes, the owner, approaches us smiling. He is a young man with a gentle, open countenance beneath a shock of shorn black hair. His accent is less of-a-place as it is that of a man who chooses his words thoughtfully. Rhodes bought the business in 2013 from Lewis Martin after working as an apprentice for Martin for over three and a half years. Martin started the business in 1962. “Lewis, he just sort of shooed the chickens outta here and started making harnesses,” explains Rhodes. The Dayton community, population about 1500, has many Mennonite residents. Therefore, a harness shop is as necessary as a gas station is to most communities. Although Martin Harness now does primarily harness repair, as the call for tack made of synthetic materials has outdone the want for leather. Still, leather repairs are needed as evidenced by the lady who stops in for a quick fix to a rein.

However, the demand for quality custom leather goods is on the rise. When asked what his most popular item is, Rhodes replies without hesitation, “Belts. I sell at least 2000 a year.” Sure enough, there’s a rack of belts in all sizes, widths and leathers. They’re simple, practical and reasonably priced. “Solid brass buckle. Can’t wear that out in a lifetime. Unless sometimes they get used as a tow strap or something,” says Rhodes. I’m trying to picture one of his Northern Virginia customers deploying a belt as such. Lewis Martin returns from his lunch break. In his early nineties, Martin is anything but elderly, he’s trim, spry, and unfaltering in his facts. His admiration and deference regarding the 25-year-old Rhodes is a forgotten elegance. We are told to respect our elders, a much easier obligation when the elder respects the younger with equanimity. Martin says, “For this work I needed an apprentice who must enjoy working with his hands, not just like today’s kids who can only work with their thumbs,” he jabs at an imaginary cell phone. But he and Rhodes are quick to acknowledge the desire for custom-crafted phone cases makes reliable work for them. As well as a mini-toolbox that affixes to a belt. These compact totes are made to snugly carry flashlights, knives, Leatherman tools, wrenches, whatever that particular farmer requires. continued on page 22

There are three tools required to work leather: a round knife, a draw knife, and a stitching horse. The round knife, with its half-moon blade, is used for cutting and shaping leather, as important to the artisan as a hammer is to a carpenter. The draw knife is a blade with a guide to cut strips of leather precisely. The stitching horse holds the leather fast while the craftsman secures and embellishes designs with hand stitching. Our hosts demonstrate all of these with enthusiasm that belies decades of repetition. The stitching horse is sort of a wonky saw horse with a seat. This particular one has been in use for about 150 years to the best of Martin’s knowledge. He conveys the story of the Old Order Mennonite minister, like himself, who kept a stand for his Bible next to his stitching horse. While he stitched he memorized Scripture. At first this seems impossible until recalling knitters who chat away as if their hands are controlled by some alternative energy source. Aside from the necessary tools there are some that are adjunct to the practice, such as the “bark spud.” It looks a bit like an over-sized Medieval butter knife. It was used to peel the bark from chestnut. Now extinct, American chestnut, along with oak and hemlock, barks were once the primary source for the acidic tannins required to tan leather. Today there are only two major tanneries in the US. Although the effluent from the tanneries was traditionally organic material, its concentration made it highly toxic to the waterways the tanneries were situated on, hence their demise. Lois says, “You could stay in here a week and not see everything,” as she switches lenses. She asks Rhodes, “Do you ever take pictures of what you do? Maybe put them up, just for inspiration?” Rhodes laughs, “I’d like to, but we don’t have cameras.” Nor, as Old Order Mennonites, are Rhodes or Martin, the focus of a camera.” An aspect unique to this photo shoot. Recently, Rhodes, his wife, and Martin, visited Chuck Pinnell, world-recognized leather crafter in Crozet (BRL 12/2013). Pinnell conveyed the story of visiting an esteemed leather shop in London, having made the trip abroad for the purpose. The owner was cordial but denied Pinnell a glimpse of the work space, calling a cab for him. Chuck Pinnell told the Dayton enclave, “I didn’t even get to see his workroom at all!” Martin says, “It deflated his (Pinnell’s) balloon terrible! But I really admire him for absorbing that disappointment and using it to advantage. Instead of letting it destroy him, it was a stepping stone for him. We visited for as long as we wanted to. He didn’t seem anxious to call a cab for us. He is humble is what he is.” After a few hours Lois and I pack up to leave, not that we feel pressured to, or have run short of material. It’s been an immersion in graciousness. I had wondered where this thought from Rhodes might fit? “We’re awfully small packages when we’re wrapped up in ourselves.” BRL

Expired to Inspired! Change the outcome of an expired listing

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

The market has been improving and beginning to favor sellers as inventory of homes for sale dwindles. However, even with fewer options for buyers, there are some homes that continue to be overlooked. Within Nelson County there are currently 68 properties that have been listed for at least a year. 13 properties have actually been listed for more than 1000 days! Many of these listings have expired and been relisted. If you are a distraught home seller facing an expired or soon to expire listing, evaluate your circumstances and get inspired to turn a depressing situation into a positive outcome. Check Motivation – If you are simply testing the waters, you may not have the proper motivation to attract a buyer. Don’t stigmatize your property by racking up unnecessary days on market. Excessive days on market may make your home “old news” and potential buyers may

never even be alerted to the many price reductions. Some buyers may assume that there is a problem with the home; otherwise someone would have bought it by now. If you are not motivated to sell “today,” don’t put it on the market until “tomorrow.” Consider the Presentation and Condition – Did you get showings? The rule of thumb is that 10 showings, or possibly 15 in a slower market, should generate an offer, or at least a serious prospect. If your home is being shown, but is not yet sold, carefully evaluate feedback. Was the clutter blocking the window with a view? Can you re-arrange furniture to create a better flow? Is the carpet worn and in need of replacing? Has maintenance been neglected? Understanding buyer objections can help you solve the problem. Many solutions, such as cleaning and de-cluttering, don’t even cost a dime. Evaluate the Price – An over-

priced home is not attractive! If the price is set too high, your home will be overlooked. How did you arrive at the price when you first listed? Did you insist on a list price based on personal expectations? Or did the agent provide you with market data to predict the most likely sales price? Ask your agent for an update on the market conditions and get a new or revised comparative market analysis (CMA). Do your homework! Price should always be market driven. Review the Marketing – Agents are not all alike and neither are their marketing plans. It often takes more than a MLS entry, a sign, and a lockbox to get results. Sit down with your agent and review the marketing plan. Does your home have a strong online presence? Would it be advantageous to rev up interest with a broker open house or online with featured or showcased property placement on Zillow, Trulia, or Realtor.com? Does your agent solicit

buyer feedback? Most importantly, does the agent communicate with you? If the agent is aggressively marketing the property, the agent deserves your loyalty. However, if the agent listed and disappeared, it’s probably time for a change. Interview agents and shop for services. Your best value will most likely be the agent who stands apart from the crowd in services, and not price. Marketing your property can be costly. Hence, the agent looking to take your listing at a reduced commission may offer a reduction in services. Be careful; there is wisdom in that age old saying “you get what you pay for.” Learn from your past experiences and take positive strides to ensure success in the future! SONG and SANCTUARY

WESTVIEW

[ augusta county ]

STORY by VICTORIA BEECHER GODFREY PHOTOGRAPHY by LOIS WHITE COLE

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2018

A jaunty red door blushes against a field of white clapboard at the front of this once-church in the village of Westview. It faces Route 254, known locally as the Parkersburg Turnpike. Formerly, the old sunken roadway behind the chapel was the main road, and Stonewall Jackson’s track on his 1862 Valley Campaign. The church, a gathering place for over a century, is familiar with ice cream socials; picnic tables laid with potato salad, fried chicken, and, buttercream frosted cakes; and country weddings where the aisle wasn’t even long enough to have a second thought.

This evening the door swings open to guests carrying black cases. They slip off to the back hall and return as musicians taking seats in the sanctuary tuning and adjusting their instruments. Meanwhile the pews fill in with bluegrass enthusiasts from nearby communities. The buzz tonight is over a gentleman seated in the front row. He is quietly absorbing the activity. Don DePoy leans in to explain that the visitor is Steve Mandell. Mandell was a session musician from New York during the era of folk enthusiasm, although his aspiration was to capture the sounds of Appalachia. He played the guitar part in “Dueling Banjos”, to the rivalry of Eric Weissberg’s banjo, the theme song of the American movie drama, “Deliverance” released in 1972. The following year, the soundtrack featured “Dueling Banjos” as its opening track and the tune was a chart topper.

DePoy has initiated this event held on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. There’s no question why. We’re sitting in the pew that DePoy’s mother always sat in, that he always sat in, when this was Westview United Methodist Church. He lives a few doors away with his partner in life and music, Martha Hills, who is smiling while plucking her ¾ bass. What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. –1887 Anthony J. Showalter/Elisha Hoffman “Bluegrass has been a part of my life; mountain music has been part of my life. It’s pre-natal,” says DePoy. So it is, as an aspect of a New Deal 1930s – ‘40s project his grandparents, musicians, were recorded by Alan Lomax who along with his father John Lomax, and Lead Belly as driver, toured the country documenting the deepest roots of America before the voices were lost. These recordings are archived in the Library of Congress and are familiar to all serious musicians embracing the authentic American sound. “Everyone in my family plays music. I didn’t know there were people who didn’t play until I got to college,” says DePoy. Not that it mattered. Dr. DePoy, a.k.a., “Dr. Bluegrass”, has an interdisciplinary degree in music, history, and education. His doctorate was on the social context of music. He now teaches at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. Don excuses himself to eagerly join the musicians. An occasional nod from him indicates to a player to take the break, or lead, of the song while others accompany. An introductory break goes to Martha Hills who announces some of the musicians and explains instruments, some not so commonly known such as DePoy’s Dobro, or resonator guitar. continued on page 33

Martha Hills exists in the comfort zone of entertainer and educator. According to the meandmartha.com (a comprehensive overview of the musical scope of DePoys and Hill), she is a natural. Parking 25 kids on a stage with ukuleles and teaching them to play a song within half an hour sounds like a gift, not an act. The music begins again. Behind me a sweet voice sings along: It’s hard to know another’s lips will kiss you And hold you just the way I used to do Oh, heaven only knows how much I miss you I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you. – Hank Williams The singer says her name is Anne and she’s from Staunton. She tosses off knowing all the words to every song played with a dreamy smile. Anne tells me she frequents a longtime tradition: Saturday night bluegrass at the barn on Buttermilk Springs Road in Staunton. This church, for her, is one more venue to enjoy. Charlie, a few pews in front of us, apparently arranges his evenings around these bluegrass jam sessions. Don explained that the Shenandoah Valley music scene is kind of like the Resistance during WWII, “They knew everything before anyone else.” As not everyone is quite so in tune, upcoming events include a “Blues, Jazz, & Pie” night on April 6, and on May 4 “Classical & Pie”. Whites Wayside Restaurant in Churchville provides the refreshments. For these free concerts donations are appreciated. Will the Circle be unbroken? The circle will strengthen if it’s up to the musicians and enthusiasts of the Valley. BRL

With plenty of West Virginia in his blood, brewer Matt Casto’s primal passion is distilling.

continued from page 35

The spawn of high school sweethearts from West Virginia, you could say Matt Casto’s boozy tendencies run in the family. “They say it skips a generation,” he tells me from a comfy leather club chair in the newly-built distillery lounge at Devils Backbone. “My parents actually had no interest or involvement in making alcohol but [we have] many generations of people in the mountains of West Virginia making various forms of legal and illegal intoxicants.” Just ask his mother’s mother. “One of my grandmother’s favorite things was to bring up our history that we lost not one, but two houses to problems with distilling in the basement until they finally kicked them out in the fields.” Matt’s grandmother would be proud of her bearded grandson, who’s been tapped to manage distilling operations at Backbone’s basecamp in Nelson County. As we chat, the first batch of Mountain Cane Silver Rum is fermenting away in a tank. And right before we met, the UPS driver delivered a small white package. Inside are a few rolls of heat shrink tubes, the plastic wrappers that help seal the spirits in a bottle. “We’ll be cranking out one bottle at a time,” adds co-founder Heidi Crandall, looking up from her laptop. “It’s like starting all over again.” She’s talking about the early startup days of Devil Backbone, before the expansion to the roomy production facility in Lexington, and before the acquisition by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Those were the days before the operation could crank out 7200 bottles a minute, back when a machine bottled and crowned the beer, which was then packaged by hand into cases. continued on page 38

The new distillery is by no means a production powerhouse but with its vaulted timber-frame ceilings, an inviting fireplace lounge and bar that boasts a view of the shiny copper tanks in the distillation room, it is a monument to high end spiritmaking. And Matt is quick to point out the similarities between beer and liquor. “Being a brewer and moving into distilling, it’s weird how just a line of like 14% alcohol separates two different worlds between beer making and making distilled spirits. And I really want to blur that line.” Distilling spirits, Matt says, is 90% brewing. When the formula makes its way to the stills, that’s called a distiller’s beer. But then there’s the extra step of evaporating the ethanol out of that beer, concentrating it down into a spirit. continued on page 41

“We want to see where we can take this, how we can use what we know about brewing to make better spirits, and how we can kind of blur the line of what is a spirit and what is a beer.” If he sounds like a bit of a mad scientist, just take a peek at the notebook on Matt’s lap, a handwritten brain dump of the stuff fermenting in his mind. One of the pages reminds me of the scene in Good Will Hunting when Matt Damon’s character attacks a chalk board with formulas and numbers. “Literally every note and bit of math and working out the recipes has gone into this book. You can see my madness when it comes out.” Madness to be distilled later his year as Nelly’s Apple Brandy, Virginia Pine Gin, as well as the Rum that’s bubbling away. “I have nightmares that I lose this book, or that somebody takes it and I wake up in a cold sweat.” A cold sweat that can surely be remedied with a well-guarded recipe of which Matt’s grandmother would approve. Simplistic Landscape Design Landscape architecture has been around for centuries. From its origin, the landscape from yesteryear was more about hardscapes (i.e. statuary, walls, columns, fountains, etc.) than the greenery that most of us see outside our homes today. The plants associated with these structures then were mostly indigenous species to add fragrance, utility (herbs) and yes, beauty to the areas surrounding these objects. As plants began to migrate across borders and oceans, landscapes took on a softer and even almost foreign touch with new genus and species from around the world. As these genuses filled the spaces around our home, most landscapes lost much of the Old World ambiance and became a sea of greenery. But could you return to that same architecture flavor, very simplistic, and compete with the landscapes of today where the home sits in a sea of mulch? Not only can you, but I feel in the long run, you would maintain better consistent street appeal and save money. To the epicenter of these old landscapes, we find a plethora of structures and manmade objects. Yes, more costly at the beginning, but after years of mulching, weeding, pruning, watering and tending to the dead and dieing, the cost of this simplistic form of landscape design quickly begins to offer positive returns and rarely looks disorderly. I have found that many historic and well thought-out homes offer enough eye appeal to become part of the landscape, not shielded by oversized shrubbery and trees. This style of landscape design does not mean greenery is eliminated. On the contrary, like its centuries-old models, the greenery becomes like eyeliner to the eye – a distinctive grouping or row of plants that echo and soften the shape of an object or structure. We call these areas of objects and plants “pods,” small, modestly landscaped areas surrounding or echoing the

shape of a patio, bench, window, walk or other object. Pods work best strategically scattered around the landscape. Within each pod is a manmade object, the focal point, with greenery to complement the shape and location chosen. For example, in lieu of adding plant material to the entire back of a home, this particular style would introduce a small patio, perhaps favoring a window or the architecture exhibited by the home, and then flanked by a modest grouping of evergreens and seasonal color. A bench, located near the front corner of the home can be surrounded on the approach with sod and in the back with a small tree on one corner along with a couple low growing evergreens flanking both sides of the bench. To the rear of the bench, found in the shadows of the small tree, could be a grouping of ferns and associated perennials. A walk to the residence could be flanked on both sides by sod with a large container filled with annual color at the beginning, near the drive, and another as you enter the residence. A fishhook shaped, low wall could have three, equally spaced, low growing trees to anchor the wall and an antique container in the center of the hook’s curve surrounded by a sea of sod. Using this model, the landscape can be broken into a dozen pieces that can be installed over a longer period of time, while still making a powerful impact from day one. Focusing on high impact areas first allows the residence to appear finished while the plan is not yet fully implemented. Utilizing sod as one more of your landscape plants will allow you to seed within close proximity of the residence (yes, sod up close and personal with your home) while the neighboring pod draws the attention. Over the long haul, the money saved in maintaining these smaller, high impact areas, should easily outweigh the initial cost of installing these hardscapes. Simplistic design really is that beautiful.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine How much is too much screen time? Just a few years ago we discussed screen time in very concrete terms. But, now, screens are everywhere and used for everything! I saw one prediction that eventually pretty much every flat surface we see will eventually wear a screen. So, what are the health risks of screen time? There is research to suggest that in children obesity, irregular sleep schedules, behavioral problems, loss of social skills, increased violence, and less play time all result from excessive screen time. But it is not only kids that are affected. It is proposed that adults may have changes happening in their brains, increased risk for obesity and diabetes, increased eye strain, decreased ability to process emotions, and even earlier death all resulting from lots of time on screens. Some of these problems stem from more time sitting, which we know is bad for us. Some are from an increasing interaction with others only through digital media at the expense of real time with other people. And some of these risks are from looking at

the screens themselves. Our world is going to have screens and digital interactions more and more. So, here are some basic guidelines to try to live with them in a healthy way: Kids under 2 should avoid screen time except for video chatting. Kids aged 2-5 should only have 1 hour per day max, and that should be high quality screen time with a parent. After age 6 the numbers aren’t as easy to nail down. Kids can have screen time, but need to be sure to be getting at least an hour of activity per day in addition. They also should not see screens an hour before bed. Finding that balance is the job of thinking parents. And, those same guidelines are good ones for adults to abide by as well. Did you get an hour of activity in today? Talk with some friends in person? If so, enjoy the show! (But not right before bed.) If not, better go for a walk with a buddy instead! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
