from
thepublishers You’ve heard the story about the mother who picks up a car and gets it off her child, right? Yesterday I did not save a life but I did save a sack of groceries. Out here, we have to drive to the recycling center and dump our own trash. Aside from the occasional embarssment (poison eye darts from my more eco-conscious brethren) of sounding a loud clink when dead soldiers from last night’s party get mixed into your bagged rubbish, the trash dump routine is exactly that: routine. Except when you settle back into the driver’s seat to leave and realize your $40 sack of groceries is no longer riding shotgun.. After putting the Jeep back into park, and catching a quick curious glance from Adam in the back seat, I peered over the side of the dumpster and saw tonight’s dinner and part of tomorrow’s breakfast. Ain’t no stoppin’ a woman from gettin’ her food. In full-on Nelson County ninja, I grabbed the side of the dumpster and hopped over it, snatched the sack which was now dripping with dumpster juice, then hopped back. It was only then that I looked around to see if anyone had seen me. Not a soul. Just like a ninja.
I happened to have an empty paper sack that was fated for the paper bin so all the groceries went there. And drippy dumpster juice bag went back where it belonged. We’re not germaphobes but I did take this opportunity to make it a point to the kids that washing hands is important. The 5-second rule is still very much a part of our family’s constitution but even we have certain biodynamic thresholds we care not to cross. So as I was fixing an ultra sanitized dinner on sterile white plates, the kids grabbed their dollar store butterfly nets and began trapping carpenter bees. Looking out the window over the sink, I saw them ditch the nets at the creek and dart to the trapeze we recently hung for them on a tree. Ninjas aren’t born. They’re made. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
May Means Rosé Who doesn’t love the merry month of May? Or as Vanessa Regrave sang with such vigor, the lusty month of May? If you consoled yourself with red throughout the cold and snow of this past winter, May signals the return to rosé, which itself signals a return to light-hearted, carefree spring and summer evenings. My love affair with rosé began about thirty years ago, in the days when it was tragically uncool to drink it anywhere outside of Provence, much less rhapsodize over it. Back then, the dry rosés of Provence often came in funny-shaped bottles and were not much more than a foil for spicy Provençal or Niçoise cuisine. This was due in part to their acidity, which could also be somewhat harsh or, as a friend of mine once put it when we were sipping the squiggly-shaped bottled rosé I’d insisted we drink, and gazing out to an azure Mediterranean, “The price to pay for the sparkling sea shouldn’t be lighter fluid.” Things only got worse from there when, in the 80s, in a white wine
shortage and red Zinfandel surplus, California got the great idea to press red grapes for white wine. And white Zinfandel, was born―the sweet, barely tinted (blush) liquid further destroying the reputation of my beloved and beautiful, bone-dry rosés from the south of France. So why do I love rosé so much, apart from its crisp acidity and versatility in pairing with food? Rosé insists we all lighten up and smell the viburnum. Rosé offers an oasis of quietude from the first sip. With the next sip, it offers gentle joy and a sense that everything is well with the world. Rosé is a happy wine and very few are expensive. It’s an antidote to the seriousness or snobbishness that can surround wine. And in this modern day of overwork, overscheduling, stress and constant device checking, rosé takes us to a shaded terrace beneath the wisteria, where the only noise is not your mobile phone demanding attention, but the cicadas rubbing legs together, calling out tzzzch, tzzzch, tzzzch, in search of mates. There are now hundreds of rosés from which to choose, and the following are only some of our Basic Neces-
sities favorites. Domaine d’Esclans, Whispering Angel, 2014 - Although made by Sacha Lichine, whose pedigree harks to Bordeaux (Sacha is the son of the late Alexis Lichine of the Château Prieuré-Lichine), Whispering Angel is pure Provence. Clean with just the right balance between fruit and acidity. Pair with pastas, pesto rubbed salmon, and most Asian cuisine. $20 Sainte Victoire, Côtes de Provence, 2014 – The sub-appellation of Ste. Victoire, lying east of Aix-en-Provence, is named for the Mont Sainte Victoire which inspired Cezanne. From his atelier in the north of Aix, Cezanne painted the mountain dozens of times, laying the foundation for Cubism and inspiring Picasso, Matisse and others. Dry with an intense fresh taste and notes of white peaches. Pair with soupe de poisons and other Provençal specialties. $16.99 Reverdy Sancerre, 2014 – With just one sip, see how beautifully France’s Loire Valley alchemizes Pinot Noir grapes into the most elegant and delicate expression of rosé. Like strawberries and raspberries in your glass. Pair with goat cheese and trout. $20

That Virginia red clay is one hell of a drug. Muddin’ is an annual tradition for many ruralites across the Old Dominion. Few sports can give the adrenaline rush you get from speeding through the bog, spraying mud into the sky, caking your grill, and watching the steam roll off your rig. The heat and growl of the engine are so satisfying, and just the smell of the mud is intoxicating – a reminder that the best things in life are

Kenny Mays’s “Doggone Truck” brought him two 2nd place finishes at a recent Pit of Dreams Mud Bog benefitting the Rockfish Valley Fire Department.
Kenny Mays of Stuart’s Draft owns one of 50 trucks baptized at the recent Pit of Dreams Mud Bog held at a field adjacent to the Rockfish Valley Fire Department. “Doggone truck drivin’” for five years, Kenny placed second in two classes on a sunny spring Saturday, clocking in at 13.3 seconds running tractor tires in the anything goes XX Class. “You can run just about anything from a bicycle to an airplane in the XX Class. You can use paddle tires. Even nitrous,” Kenny said. There are several classes in the competition, based primarily on tire size and truck modifications. Kenny placed second in the 33” tire class, running about 8 seconds through the bog. There is even a class for children to compete. continued on page 12

THIS IS THE VIEW BEHIND THE WHEEL OF “TRIPLE M,” A 1966 DODGE POWER WAGON DRIVEN BY AMANDA RICHARDSON OF FLUVANNA COUNTY.
The Richardsons of Fluvanna County make muddin’ a family affair. Robbie and his wife Amanda ride with the Triple M racing team. They both compete, and so do the kids, albeit with parental supervision. Madison is 12 and Robert, Jr. is just 5. Amanda drives a 1966 Dodge Power Wagon. She even lets her two-year-old daughter and “future mudder,” Lily, ride around as the trucks warm up. Blue Ridge Life photographer, Shay Munroe, became an honorary mudder with the Richardsons spending the day riding with Amanda in that ‘66 Dodge. Splattered in mud and grinning wide under visored racing helmets, they shared a cab worn by years of work and play. “I’d never been mud bogging before,” Shay said. “I immediately was into it and begged to ride the track again.” The Richardsons will be back in the Rockfish Valley on May 9 for another dip. 15-year-old Tristin Williams of Louisa will spend quite a few weekends in the bog this spring and summer. He’s a dedicated mudder: 12

“It’s a very addicting sport. And an adrenaline rush for sure.” Racing since he was 12, Tristin built his 1984 short bed Chevy “from the ground up” to compete in multiple classes. From the Rockfish Valley, he raced the next weekend in South Boston, Virginia. The trucks have their own personalities, as eclectic as the drivers behind their wheels. And with those personalities come some very creative names. Tristin Williams’ Chevy rides by the name, “Straight Nasty.” Kenny Mays rides in his “Doggone Truck.” And Tanya Ricks of Chesterfield gets behind the wheel of “Hell on Heels.” The object of the sport is simple: get across the bog in the shortest time. Competitors to the volunteer-organized event, which benefits the Rockfish Valley Fire Department, pay $25 per run. Half of the entry fees is awarded to first place, 30% go to second place, and 20% go to third. There are even trophies. And for the kids, everyone gets an award. So don’t come with a Ricky Bobby attitude. It’s a fun and friendly competition. “It got kinda’ slow when we had to pull some trucks out, but it was a fun and entertaining day,” Kenny said. Everyone is equal in the mud. BRL

While many Nelsonians are completely opposed to the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline, Marshall Faintich of Nellysford doesn’t exactly consider himself part of the camp. “I’m not opposed to the pipeline; I’m opposed to some ways they’re going about it, and I’m concerned about the environment,” he said. Marshall is an avid bird watcher and he’s worried about the Cerulean Warbler, a small migrant bird that spends breeding season right here in our backyards. Even without the ACP, Cerulean Warblers have shown a steady decline in population of about 3% per year for the last 40 years, which Marshall says is thought to be due to habitat loss and the destruction of breeding grounds. Marshall, who retired in 2006 and has been doing wildlife photography and talks in Central Virginia since then, published a book in 2009 called The Photographic Guide to the Birds of Wintergreen. Since then, he’s noticed that the majority of the Cerulean Warblers he’s seen have been right at the areas where the Pipeline is slated to cross the Blue Ridge Parkway — mile markers 2 and 12.

WARBLERWATCH The proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline has an avid birder on alert.
“I’m not an ornithologist so I can’t speak to how close the pipeline would need to be to disturb them, but my concern is that it’s going to disrupt the species,” he said. And while the Cerulean Warbler is not on the Federal endangered species list, it’s of high concern and is endangered at the state level in 22 states. “I’m not an expert ornithologist, but I spent most of my time birding in Central Virginia, particularly in the Rockfish Valley, and the two areas where the pipeline is slated to cross is at [mile marker] 2 and [mile marker 12] — the two areas where I’m sure this high concern bird is nesting and breeding,” he said. And as far as sounding the alarm to regulators tapped to consider the ACP project and those who protect wildlife, “It’s something I wanted to bring to their attention,” Marshall said. BRL

In 100 years of Saunders Brothers, there have been quite a number of Saunders in and out the barn doors … but the family name is not a prerequisite for being part of the family. “We really have a talented group of employees and most of them don’t have the name Saunders,” said Jim, one of the current Saunders who runs the farm with his brothers (Tom, Bennett, and Robert) along with their father, Paul. “I’m really grateful for the people that have helped carry us to be 100 years old.” In 1915, the original Saunders Brothers — Sam, Dick, Doc, William, and Massie, who were just five of the Saunders children — decided to join forces to start a farm. Paul (Sam’s son), said the brothers noticed the need for grain fields and pastures during WWI and after the war started producing fruit and eventually plants like their famed boxwood. Eventually, the five brothers took separate paths but three continued the Saunders Brothers name. And current patriarch, Paul, got started in the family business at a very young age. “Of course I fell in love with farming over the years,” he remembers. “I grew up on a farm doing jobs — we call ‘em chores now. We had jobs to do: I milked cows before I went to school and fed the chickens and slopped the hogs when I got home and carried in wood. All these wonderful memories of the farm was what made a great impression on me. I remember when I went to Virginia Tech in 1950 I had tears in my eyes as we left the driveway because I was leaving home.” Except for those four years at Virginia Tech and a couple years in the Army, Paul never did spend much time away from his home and his farm. When his father died in 1967, Paul took over operation of the farm (then called Saunders Orchard and Nursery) until his sons started trickling back and they incorporated, reverting to the original name in the 1980s. Just like Paul was drawn back to the farm, four of his nine sons are back in the fields at Saunders Brothers. “It was just in our blood,” said Paul. “We loved what we did.” In the 100 years since the original Saunders Brothers started farming, Paul has seen a world of changes pass over the farm. “I’ve lived here most all of my life since 1936, but have a good memory since 1940, when we built the packing shed,” he recalls. In addition to the change in crop (from wheat and tobacco to peaches and boxwood), Paul says the biggest changes have come in the form of tractors and water. continued on page 20

PLANTING BOXWOODS THEN, AND NOW. There’s a good chance the storied shrub of many Virginia homes was planted here at Saunders Brothers in Piney River. In addition to their orchards, Saunders Brothers grows a variety of plants and shrubs, some of them in greenhouses (top).

“We didn’t get our first tractor until World War Two,” said Paul, who was still a child at the time. “And of course all of the factories during WWII were sending their machinery to the war front. After the war we got us a rubber tire tractor. And of course farming today has changed so much. We have no horses; we have tractors. And all of our tractors are now four wheel drive.” The tractors have increased speed and power, but the irrigation system has helped spread the orchards and save the plants to better the farm perhaps even more. Not to mention the cold storage. And there’s much more in store in the coming years. “I don’t know where we’re going, but I think I’m like Daddy: I think the technology is amazing,” said Jim, who returned to the family farm in 1995 after graduating from Virginia Tech and working for the extension service for several years. “We’ve been able to reduce our water usage by 50% with this computerized watering system, and we have GPS in some of our tractors now.” And the best part is that this family business isn’t going anywhere. “There’s a lot of new Saunders coming along and they’re beginning to show a lot of interest,” said Jim, including the non-Saunders folks in the Saunders Family. “The key to our business, in my opinion, is we’ve been able to attract extremely talented, knowledgeable people that have helped us grow the business and those people are — to me — what makes us go every day.” The Saunders Brothers have become a mainstay of the community and Paul says he loves this community and — more than anything — loves inviting locals into the Saunders family and watching what they become. “Lots of people have had their first jobs here and we feel like we’re part of who they become,” said Paul. “We’re so proud of them. Doctors and lawyers have worked here. We’ve had some become judges. School teachers. And some that have been homemakers. And we’re so proud of all of them. Some have gone away from here and some have stayed. And they’re all a part of Saunders Brothers.” BRL

In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the glare just a little bit, adding our 3M™ window tinting to your current windows will give you more crisp high definition views. Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. In addition, these rays also cause serious harm to your skin and eyes. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Our 3M™ window tinting is a sun filter. We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They work well for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They filter 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. This new tinting is not dark, won’t bubble or fade, and will literally improve the quality of your views. Installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting, they come with a lifetime warranty. A Nelson County real estate summary for Q1 2015
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
The cold weather did not impede a warm up in sales for the start of 2015, but it may have put a chill on the median sales price. When looking at the greater Charlottesville area, Nelson County experienced the greatest growth in sales volume. However, we were one of the few area counties to see a decline in median price. Here is a quick residential market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Q1 Countywide Overview; 49 residential properties sold in Q1 of 2015 which represents a 26% increase from the same time period in 2014 when 39 properties sold. Q1 Statistical Comparison; Q1 2014 recap: median $220,000, average price $281,396, average price per sq ft 145.72, days on market (DOM) 108. Q1 2015: median $147,000 average price $185,811, average price
per sq ft 126.22, DOM 226. The 2015 market reflects a substantial increase in the number of sales from Q1 2014 to Q1 2015. While sales increased, there was a notable shift in the price point of purchases. Only 6 properties sold in Q1for more than $300,000. The median dropped 33% from $220,000 in Q1 2014 to $147,000 in Q1 2015, but the average price per sq ft saw a less dramatic downward shift of 13%. This downward shift may be due to smaller, less expensive, properties selling. For example, the condo market accounts for 67% of Wintergreen sales and 41% of all Q1 residential sales. Condos provide a low point of entry to acquire a resort property; the median condo price in Q1 was only $111,500. A shift in median may also be indicative of buyers seeking values; distressed sales/foreclosures are not as prevalent as they were years ago, but they still accounted for nearly 16% of Q1 sales. The DOM increased, but that
Marlo Allen
is not necessarily a negative; several properties that severely skewed the averages finally sold. I can’t reiterate enough that homes that are priced appropriately for the market (when they are initially listed!) are more likely to sell in a timely fashion. Q1 Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 30 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 1 sale, and all other non-resort or county properties with 18 sales. When comparing Q1 2015 sales with Q1 2014 sales, sales increased in all markets, except for Stoney Creek. Sales volume – Wintergreen - 43% increase, County20% increase, Stoney Creek - 67% reduction. It is important to note that Stoney Creek may have had a slow start, but it is already showing signs of improvement; as of April 15, there are now 2 sales and 5 pending sales. The county locality with the most sales was Shipman representing 28%
434-996-3525
Marlo Moves Property … especially in Stoney Creek!
of all county/non-resort sales; this would be indicative of buyers willing to seek out values because all 5 of those were distressed sales. Reflection and Projection; It is a good sign to see sales start the year on a positive note, especially since historic trends for the county indicate that sales will increase in subsequent quarters. Year end price figures, that take into account a larger pool of sales, may also move upward based on the stabilization of average price per sq ft in recent years; 2012 - $139.25, 2013 - $140.42, 2014 - $141.55. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. For further explanation and comparison relative to a property you want to sell or purchase, contact a real estate professional. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Dominion’s proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline is All Pain and No Gain for these Virginians and many others. This pipeline will scar some of the most beautiful land in the country, negatively impacting our community forever. Dominion and its allies are taking a heavy-handed approach to this pipeline project, ignoring the concerns of property owners and filing lawsuits against homeowners who don’t want to grant Dominion access to their land.
The Dominion pipeline rips through historical areas and key tourism centers and will hurt our local economy and kill jobs. Experts warn that the Dominion pipeline will compromise the safety and quality of our drinking water. The pipeline is a terrible legacy to leave for our children and future generations. To learn about these 7 Faces of Pain, go to www.allpainnogain.com.
This is all pain. Where is the gain? This is our land. Take a stand. Don’t let Dominion take it away!

Catalina San Georgia isn’t your average 22 year old. Born in Monaco, she’s been living in Nelson County since she was 6 and recently graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Environmental Science. In the short time since graduation, she’s already landed her dream job: Local Projects Coordinator at Building Goodness Foundation, a nonprofit established in Charlottesville that takes on both local and international projects. But that accomplishment wasn’t without lots of hard work and years of preparation. Catalina started volunteering in Nicaragua when she was just 15 years old. There, she worked with Bridges to Community, a nonprofit organization that strives to improve the lives of impoverished communities by educating, training, and transforming volunteers into community members ready, willing, and able to perpetuate goodness through volunteer service trips. During her time at UVa, Catalina started volunteering internationally with Building Goodness Foundation (BGF), a local organization she was drawn to because of how similar it was to Bridges to Community, where she’d had such wonderful experiences.

With BGF has local projects, national projects, and even international projects as far as Central America, the Caribbean, and West Africa. BGF Board Member Bruce Wachtel said that BGF was founded 15 years ago partially by chance. Several founders went to Haiti to help work as builders on a project and one in particular — Jack Starner — was so moved that the plans started rolling. “He insisted that some of his friends come down there with him and just go build something; there are so many building needs down there: schools, medical clinics,” said Bruce, of Jack. “The word just sort of spread and now so many builders that are in competition here in Charlottesville are working side by side and doing some of these international projects.” continued on page 32

After volunteering for years, Catalina is more than proud to take on her new role as Local Projects Coordinator. “I’ve been volunteering with BGF for a little over three years at this point, and then this position opened up. I applied and it was a rigorous interview process and somehow I got it; here I am!” she said. “Everything is falling into place.” Bruce, who is also head of the Leadership Committee, said it’s been great having Catalina in an official capacity after working with her for so long. “It’s just been really great watching her develop,” he said. “She started out as just a volunteer; she went on an international trip; somebody recognized her as a trip leader, and she went from there into heading up as a project manager in Haiti for our small house project. She’s shown what she’s made out of. She’s really quite a person. We’re all impressed and really happy to have her as part of our staff.” She’s been working at the international level with BGF for quite some time, but as a Nelsonian, she’s got the inside scoop for her new role working with local projects. BGF, under Catalina’s direction, just finished up a shed for the Treasure Chest at the Rockfish Valley
Community Center and they’re working on an aviary at the Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary as well as an additional animal enclosure for baby foxes. “Our partners — the Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary — they’re currently working out of their own residence and they really need their own space,” said Catalina. “The founder of the nonprofit, she volunteers at her house constantly, baby foxes and raccoons and opossums just running throughout, and they finally received enough money through grants to build this really nice building, and they’ll have a nursery inside.” Building Goodness Foundation will help design and build the 15-by-24-foot enclosure with three separate sections. She’s enjoyed herself working — mostly on weekends — right in her backyard, but always leaves the option for going international again one day soon. But whether it be across the ocean or right in her hometown, her mission never changes. “Our core values pretty much represent who we are,” said Catalina. “BGF couldn’t run without its volunteers and the quality of work that our volunteers give. It’s something that I feel pretty blessed to be able to come to work and be surrounded by people who are so passionate about what they do.” BRL

Estate Planning Mistakes to Learn From By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC
Everyone likes a good story, but no one wants the story to be about them when something has gone wrong. Hopefully none of the following true situations I have encountered will ever be you. • Mistakes in estate planning can affect the young and old alike. A young man, only 32 years old, was tragically killed in a freak accident involving some heavy machinery. He left behind a wife and three little children. Unfortunately, he had no life insurance. His employer provided life insurance paid about $60,000, but such a sum does not go far in this world when it’s all you have to survive. The young widow faced substantial odds and hardship. If the young couple had purchased appropriate life insurance policies, things would have turned out much different for that young mother. • After the death of a 62 year old woman, her siblings found she had not prepared a Will. She owned a home on some land which she had been sharing with a significant other person in her life, but they were unmarried, and she had no children. She had a few stock accounts beneficiary designated to her male friend, but the remainder of her estate was left to go by the laws of intestacy to her father, who was still living (at the age of 90) in a nearby nursing home. The father was on medical assistance. As a result, her entire estate was then used to pay for her father’s nursing home care, instead of going to her companion, who was left to find a new home. • A woman’s 72 year old husband had a sudden massive stroke which left him incapacitated and in need of nursing home care. Unfortunately, the couple’s most substantial asset was a traditional retirement account (IRA) the husband had accumulated during his working years. The company which held the husband’s IRA account refused to allow the woman to access her husband’s IRA since the woman could not produce a financial durable power of attorney from her husband which named her as his agent. They refused to cooperate with her until she could produce court documentation granting her the authority to access the account. This became a lengthy and expense legal process which could have easily been avoided by seeking quality legal advice before a crisis. • An 82 year old man sat crying at my conference room table when his second wife of only seven years was permanently admitted to a nursing home after a fall. His grief was quickly compounded when he learned that all of his assets were subject to her nursing home costs. Because of the lack of proper planning, only a few solutions were available to this gentleman, and none of them was pleasant. In the end, he retained only his home and about a quarter of his original assets. Seeking the counsel of an attorney well versed in estate planning to create a solid plan will likely help you avoid costly mistakes.

Jeff Morris of Afton and Steve Goode of Charlottesville take turns dropping in at the skate ramp behind the Rockfish Valley Community Center, a popular hangout since 2008. SK8 Nelson organizers are throwing a party to raise money to cover rising insurance costs Saturday, June 27 from 5 to 9pm. Food and drinks come courtesy Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Trager Brothers Coffee, and Cardinal Point Winery. Local musicians Shagwuf, Jaguardini, and Orme Storm will play tunes.
Jason Oliver and Uriah Murray may be years apart (Jason’s a brewmaster at Devils Backbone Brewing Company and Uriah is still in high school), but thanks to a mutual love of skateboarding, they’re part of a small, but dedicated, community consisting of skaters of all ages from all walks of life. “When I first moved back here in 2008, I got in touch with Tim Gorman, who started SK8 Nelson, an organization to put a skate facility in Nelson,” said Jason, who has volunteered in D.C. building a skate park and had one in his backyard in high school. “It was really fun to volunteer and build something for the community. And it’s something I could use as well; it was a great project.” “I live on Shannon Farm about five minutes away from the ramp,” Uriah said. “I skate there at least every couple of days but have gone through times of skating every day for weeks. There are quite a few people that I skate the ramp with regularly in Nelson.”
Thanks to that SK8 Nelson ramp that Tim, Jason, and a small team of dedicated community members built a few years ago at the Rockfish Valley Community Center, strangers from every generation have a place to meet and test out their tricks. Michael Donegan was one of the guys who helped build it. “I was very psyched to help build the ramp after Tim [Gorman] started SK8 Nelson and got the wheels rolling,” Michael said. After building several dangerous ramps when I was a kid, it was great to see how a professional one is constructed.” However, due to rising insurance costs, RVCC must raise $3,000 per year to keep the half pipe around. Fund-raising events like the upcoming “Save SK8 Nelson Fest” and the RVCC’s online donations page allow friends and fans of the SK8 Nelson ramp to donate their time and/or money to help keep the ramp insured, maintained and enjoyed for years to come. Jason said that the park is critical to have, especially in a rural community like Nelson. “There aren’t many places for people to skate in Nelson,” he said. “Being a rural community, there’s not an abundance of good, safe pavement for skaters to utilize. This is not only a communal meeting place, but it’s a safe place to practice their hobby.” Plus the party-slash-fundraiser they’re throwing is not one to be missed. “We’re going to have a community party there, a multifaceted event. We’ll have food and bands playing, skate contests, and potentially some skate workshops,” said Jason. “We’re going to have beer and wine pouring as well as other beverages. We’re going to have a nice little festival there to help raise money.” And hopefully, that way skaters out here will always have a place to drop in. BRL

Too Many Pots If you live in the BRL Community, it has to be tough to decide you’re favorite season. All the seasons have their highlights. To me, it’s Spring. The Blue Ridge leaps to life in a neon green that is almost blinding and all the opportunities to find an adventure. We have to also remember that Mother Nature loves to throw us curve balls around these parts. She has the ability to take a casual stroll and turn it into an extreme adventure. I know I have had that personally happen to me more than once. How about you? By the time you read this, April will have come and gone. Hopefully it left its mark on you. We will have had our first Adventure Triathlon down at the James River State Park with Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Blue Ridge Life Magazine, Trager Bros. Coffee, Appomattox River Co. all in support. Bel Monte
will have pushed their runners to their bitter ends. Our Virginia Off Road Series race over at the Miller School will have entertained and challenged the mountain bikers. April and May have to be the busiest and most adventurous months for the BRL Community Outdoor Enthusiasts. Too many pots and not enough burners as they say. Well now May is in the air and the thru-hikers will be passing by soon. The adventures around the area continue with the Virginia Off Road Series events surrounding the area from Wintergreen’s Cliffhanger Challenge, NEW Races in Staunton: Montgomery Hall Park Series and Massanutten HOO HA for the mountain bikers. And for something to give back to the community, Rockfish Gap Outfitters is hosting a benefit for the Blue Ridge Food Bank on May 16: Raffle Tickets, Music and Gear…. Benefitting the Blue
Ridge Food Bank. For the hikers and trail runners. Slacks, St. Marys along with Three Ridges/Priest are perfect adventures. The Three Ridges/Priest are on the tougher side to test your abilities. A cool easier adventure is the Virginia Blue Ridge Trail for the casual bike or hike. On a separate note: A couple of years ago, I was holding one of our Devils Backbone Adventure Night Runs. They were always a good time. Some considered them fun runs. Some found it competitive. But one story really stood out to me. A lady (no names, right) in her 60s (guessing) came up to me after her 5k run and told me it was her first run EVER! She was so excited. She really hit the button for why I loved doing those events. I have participated and had friends participate in all types of challenging adventures. …. But when you connect someone to a new adventure, regardless of how big
or small, you have done your duty. Those moments stick with me. I want to create and hear about more of those adventures. Recent Adventure of Interest: The end of March, I hit the road with the Virginia State Parks. In two days, we visited Powhatan, High Bridge, Twin Lakes, Holiday Lake and the James River State Park. This adventure involved a bunch of hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. Virginia State Parks have beautiful and diverse terrain. We hope to be sharing more about this recent adventure with you ... But for now “shhhhhh.” Hashtag This: #EmbraceTheAdventure … Share your adventures with us on Facebook using this hashtag. Who knows maybe we will come out and take an adventure with you? Until we meet again. Keep the Adventure Alive!! Make It Happen …

Perennials (you should have) Planted Last Year I recently was at a client’s home discussing a landscape plan for their home. After going through the shrub and tree list, I was astounded as to how perennials continue to evade the common gardener. Perhaps they are overlooked since they can disappear after blooming. Or maybe it’s because they are the runt of the litter – sometimes never growing taller than a couple of centimeters. Personally I think the American gardener still is acquainting themselves with this strangely green and almost weedy section of the garden center where all the helpers smell like pot and lavender combo. Whatever the reason, here is a short list of ones you should have already installed last year. Variegated Solomon’s Seal is one of those perennials that I really love. Yes, I hate variegation. I’ve had close relatives locate a variegated limb on an otherwise green plant and immediately go into a ‘Paul Revere type of rant’ that the millions are coming. Yes, they still work for a living. Variegated Solomon Seal is the variegation that all others envy in the patent office; a snow white edge on a deep green leaf. Insignificant bloom but readily available to be cut for filler in that vase with that cool foliage. Shade. Hellebore continues to jam in both my landscape and those of my clients yet they still seem to be some deep dark secret only shared in the back room in the garden center over French roast. Perhaps it’s the timing of the bloom (really early spring) or how the three month bloom tends to be shy as it postures its head down in an unassuming manor. Whatever the reasons, if you are reading this, PLANT THEM
(and thank me later)! Shade. False Indigo or Baptisia moves us to the deep back of the sun garden with pea-like blooms ranging from deep blue to yellow to brownish red on a long stalk. Growing to over 36 inches, this big boy needs space and offers quite an exhibition during a relatively long bloom cycle. Cut and enjoy for years to come. Could it be that I actually have fallen in love with a native? No, I have nothing to gain from throwing in a native and yes, I think the Redskins can keep their name. But each year my Trillium in my buffer border continues to absolutely thrill me with long lasting soft white blooms with pink hues. Nice foliage too. Plant at least 15 at a time and never mulch or forget it. Shade. Some plants are destined to be crammed into the smallest space and look best when in competition with other species literally inches apart. ‘Flora Plena’ Lily is just such a candidate. Locate a full sun object like a birdbath, bird house or other tall object and plant 3-5 of these at the back base of it with a smaller growing perennial(s) towards the front. Growing to over 40 inches, this double orange tiger lily really pushes through and makes its presence known – in particular to Swallowtail butterflies who go nuts over it. Cuts well. If you are into peonies and haven’t heard of the Itoh peonies, you are really missing magic. Shorter with stronger stems and much larger blooms than the traditional peonies, Itoh peonies command up to 3X the price of grandma’s peony with about 5X more desirable peony characteristics – consider them the LTZ version of grandma’s LS peony. Gas prices are down, buy an Itoh. Sun.
asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I am in pain all the time but I am nervous about taking pain medications. What can I do? I am sorry that you have such problems with pain. There are a lot of ways to manage pain and medications are only part of the approach. The best approaches to pain management include several different modalities. These include physical, psychological and medical techniques. Your doctor can discuss details of these with you. I want to talk about opiate pain medications like oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, etc. These are often referred to as narcotics, or simply ‘prescription painkillers.’ We have an epidemic of opiate abuse in the US. It seems that every week we are hearing about another celebrity dying as a result of drugs. According to the CDC, 46 people die every day in the US from painkiller overdose. In 2012, drug overdose was the leading cause of injury death in the US. Over 80% of these overdose deaths were unintentional. About 70% involved opiates, about 30% involved benzodiazepines (anxiety medications.) The risk of overdose increases as the doses
of medications increases. Deaths from prescription painkillers are more likely in people with obstructive sleep apnea, on multiple sedating medications, or with untreated depression. Most people with chronic pain are not looking to abuse medications; they just want to feel better. No one plans to get addicted to pain medications but many do. That is why most doctors are so careful when prescribing pain medications. There is a lot of scrutiny of what medications doctors are prescribing and who is getting these prescriptions. Diversion (selling or using painkillers for recreational purposes) is a real problem. 10 of highest prescribing states for painkillers are in the South. Chronic pain is a challenge for many people and opiate abuse is a real problem. Trying to balance these is difficult. Understand the good pain management includes more than just medications. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Let me Count the Ways… Strong core muscles improve performance in all sports and help to reduce spine pain. It is also important for posture, arthritis and prevention of osteoporosis. A fun and challenging way to strengthen the core muscles (abdominal and back muscles) simultaneously is to perform “plank” stabilization exercises. The plank is similar to sustaining the “up” position of a pushup but with nuances to recruit more muscles. There are many variations that can make this a great strength workout. As the name implies, hold your body (spine and hips) straight as a plank during the exercise. By doing this, you will achieve a co-contraction of the abdominal and back muscles (muscle groups working at the same time). Contract your abdominal muscles to avoid a sway back position of the lower back. Avoid lifting hips too high. Keep your gaze looking at the floor and the back of the neck flat so your head doesn’t drop. Press your hands (or forearms) into the floor so you are
pushing your rib cage upward. Avoid holding your breath so count, talk or sing during your hold time. Start with an easy version such as being on your forearms or knees and progress gradually. Pay attention to form and longer duration holds rather than the number of repetitions performed. For example, start by 20 second holds and repeat that five times. If you loose form or are in pain, shorten the duration and/or try an easier version. Variations include: 1. Plank on forearm and knees. 2. Plank on hands and knees 3. Plank on hands with legs long and straight. 4. One arm plank 5. Side planks on forearm or hands. 6. Reverse plank (backside is facing floor) 7. Plank with hands on foam roller 8. Plank with hands on Bosu 9. Plank using TRX straps 10. Plank with exercise ball under legs. See Nelson Wellness Center website for plank photos. Integrating a variety of plank exercises into your program 2-3 times a week will strengthen your core muscles and you will feel the difference. Good luck!
