thepublishers Peyton and Tommy just got back from a week-long road trip to Tennessee where Peyton fell in love with Joe and Dana’s round hammock-like swing thing which means we now must have one. But before we hang it from the maple, my dears, please clean up your room. Love, mommy. Other news: We have swine, y’all. Two of them, castrated males, that have somehow been named after women we aren’t terribly fond of. It’s part of the psychological brainplay we use to emotionally distance ourselves from animals you will eventually eat. But one of them earned the nickname, Bubbles, after bubbling in the water trough as he slurped. They are both very precious and don’t reek because we rotate their pasture. Happy pigs, happy fields, happy fences and neighbors. “They do not have manners,” Adam keenly observed as the hogs mowed and grunted through a slop pail of apples, bread, and what looked like roasted red pepper sauce. Meanwhile, the meat chickens get fresh bugs and feed in the morning when we move their tractor. And the fish get flakes. Because I wasn’t able to take Adam to the aquarium while Peyton and Tommy were gone, we
got him one for his bedroom. Each morning, he feeds Jerry, Jason and Jackson before he feeds himself. No slop for them. Peyton asked us the other day over lunch, “Do the polices come to weddings in case bad things happen?” I’m not sure what happened in Tennessee but this is a great question. “I’m sure some weddings would need security,” I told her, as I scanned my memory for scenes in the Godfather that could have involved a Sicilian wedding and the Polizia. Considering that a satisfactory answer, she then took a bite of her quesadilla after dipping it in ketchup (that too, is a Tennessee, thing). Sorry, pigs. No slop for you today. Enjoy! MAY 2017
basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com This Moment in May The seasons are as eternal as the ocean’s waves, but the way each of us experiences their revolving change is what becomes fresh and exciting with each new year — the mind and its memories forgetting, or perhaps simply unable to recall, the sharp thrill of spring’s first air. Until it touches us again. Take note of the small moments, for they can slip by, easily overlooked, or they can become portals opening up to let in more of life. There will always be the larger moments of life and death, but in between are all the little moments of Being — moments we forget when asked what we did four days ago. The dramatic events are defining in part because of their content but also because in times of crisis, we live so purely in the present, free from mind-made trivia, and that, however paradoxical, can be a kind of quiet bliss. But to step into intense presence in the mundane moments, that becomes the task. One way to help heighten your senses to all that exists around you is with wine. That’s right. When tasting, first use your sense of sight to
discern colour, for this will heighten your enjoyment. How beautiful is that glass of rosé, after all? Then spend time smelling what’s in your glass. More on that in a future column. But suffice it to say, you perceive much more through sense of smell than you do by taste. It just may not hold quite the pleasure. Now, it’s time to taste. As the late Serge Hochar would say, try to “taste beyond taste,” by which he meant that the physical response a wine provokes is but a small part of its appeal. It’s what happens in our minds provoked by those physical responses that is the true measure of a wine’s worth. Think Proust and the Madeleine. Great wines, then, are thoughtprovoking or perhaps we should say, emotion-provoking, wines. Don’t belt your wine back in anticipation of the next sip or glass. Like life, it’s the moment that counts; it’s all we really have. Let the wine touch all corners of your tongue and mouth, then savour its finish. Is the finish long or short? In other words, how long did the aftertaste linger in your mouth? If you feel like it, take a few notes, physical
or mental, to remember this wine. And this singular day in your life. Domaine de Chantemerle, Chablis, 2014 – Nothing says spring quite like a chilled bottle of white, and for me, no other white consistently stands up to Chablis. This is the benchmark for Chardonnay, what many winemakers strive to emulate. Remember, Chablis is 100% Chardonnay, all ye who drank jugs of Chablis with screw-off caps in the 70s. Clean, pure, mineral-driven, with no trace of oak. $26.99 Hervé Villemade, Cheverny, 2015 (organic) – In the land of rosé, it doesn’t get much more elegant than this from the talented Hervé Villemade. A blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay makes for floral and lighter drinking. Look for aromas of strawberries and raspberries. Elegance in a bottle. $22.99 Buglioni, Il Bugiardo Ripasso, Valpollicella, 2011 – Why is this Valpollicella called The Liar? (Il Bugiardo) Because it fools people into thinking they’re drinking Amarone. At half the price. Rich, concentrated flavour with notes of figs, prunes, dried cherries and chocolate. A red to pair with blue cheeses or whatever your heart desires. $32.99

Sitting at the picnic table over a bowl of chick pea soup cooked with smoked pig neck bones, Ben Stowe tells me they’re having a good spinach year. “I ended up calling a bunch of chefs and places to wholesale it in March. Use it or lose it.” Ben and his wife Heather Coiner are about to get really busy this summer. She’s sitting next to Ben with a quart jar full of water because pregnant women need to stay hydrated. “It’s hard for me to really anticipate how it’s going to change our lives. I know it will and I’m excited to see what that adventure looks like.” As the third couple I know having twins in the same zip code, there’s definitely something in that water she’s drinking. So lets talk about it. Little Hat Creek flows right around Ben and Heather’s property, which used to belong to Kathryn and Michael Bertoni when they ran it as Appalachia Star Farm. “They wanted to pass the farm to somebody who was going to farm ecologically,” Ben explains. It was a perfect match as they both had spent time at Waterpenny Farm in Sperryville, which is where Ben decided farming was the thing he was going to do.

1474 Ledges “I feel like they were some of the first people that I saw that weren’t struggling. I was like, ‘Wow, these people have a good life. I want some of this!’” By the time Ben and Heather met at the Clifftop Music Festival in West Virginia (they are both Appalachian string band musicians), Heather had already run a small bakery CSA in Toronto, where she used a public wood fired oven to bake bread for about 40 members. When it was time to deliver the goods, she’d hop on a bike and go. “It was through that that I realized I loved making bread for people. It was a contribution I could make that felt meaningful. I love the satisfaction of producing quality bread and knowing that people are going to be eating it and appreciating it. I love that connection with my customers.” It’s a connection that begins when she feeds the sourdough starter. For Saturday market, that means feeding the starter Wednesday night and again the next morning. By Thursday afternoon, the breads are mixed and the final dough heads to the cooler overnight for a slow fermentation. Friday morning, Heather shapes the breads, putting them in pans or baskets, where they are left to ferment again in the cooler before being baked. “It takes a lot of time but the sourdoughs fit well into a farming schedule because there are long stretches where they are fermenting and we can just go do something else.” Like harvest spinach and transplant kale. Or check the heat on the wood oven, built by a three-man team from Minnesota. “They came down and lived with us for a week,” Ben said, taking a break from the chick peas. “In the middle of February!” Heather inserted. continued on page 14

Ben is now gesticulating. “There were two huge dudes and this little tiny dude. And he was the guy who crawled inside the vault and the other two guys were lifting straps of bricks with one hand and lifting cinder blocks over their heads.” Glancing at the structure that houses the bakery and Ben’s packing shed, Heather added, “They erected a tent around the building site and they had a propane heater in there and energy drinks and their iPods.” Oofta. These days, with Heather bearing the weight of her own buns in the oven, Ben has been doing the heavy work. “So yesterday, Ben fired the oven for about 6 or 7 hours, closed it up and then this morning he lit another small fire because we won’t be baking until the evening. It holds heat really well. The coolest it ever gets down to is about 350°F - 370°F these days, and we’re baking twice a week.” And firing up that oven means you need a wood source. It just so happens that one of Ben and Heather’s CSA members works at SavvyRest in Ivy, an organic mattress company that also makes furniture. “The furniture off cuts are perfect for us because it’s a light hardwood and it burns fast,” Heather explains. “It’s kiln dried, it’s uniform. They’re long skinny pieces that fit into our 7-foot deep oven and it’s totally perfect. It means that when Ben fires, he can weigh X amount of wood and know, to within like 5 degrees, how much heat he’s going to get out of it.” But not everything is an exact science. “What I’m doing everyday in the bakery is cultivating a community of bacteria and yeasts that are then going to make a product. And so how I treat them, what temperatures I grow them at, how I handle them, what I feed them, are all ecological factors, basically controlling the ecology of my dough. For me, that’s the exciting biology part of it but I also really love that there is an art and a craft to making a beautiful bread. I can measure everything precisely but at the end of the day if the dough doesn’t feel right, I have to make adjustments.” It’s good training for being a parent. BRL 14

BATESVILLE
[ albemarle county ]
STORY by VICTORIA BEECHER GODFREY PHOTOGRAPHY by KATE SIMON
Bologna in BATESVILLE “We’re bringing back the bologna cheese sandwich!” exclaims Alex Struminger. This may not sound like progress but to the denizens of Batesville it means a whole lot. “I was standing outside of the post office talking to Charlie and Norman when I had this epiphany. Go back to a retail operation, go back to Norm, go back to Charlie Page and Page’s Store.” Fortunately, these former owners of the store live within shouting distance of Alex’s latest project, The Batesville Market, and their memories are fond and clear. When Timmy Smith couldn’t pay off his tab at Page’s Store he gave Rose and Charles Page his horse and saddle. “I named him ‘Lonesome’ because he’d stand in the corner of the pasture across from the store and shake his head at people who’d wave to him,” Charlie Page recalls. “I think Timmy had bought a stereo for $250 dollars, this was back in the seventies and my father loved horses. It was a no-brainer.” Charlie leafs through albums jammed with pictures of his ancestors, all keepers of Page’s Store. There are smiling patrons from years back and scrawled shopping lists from motor-less customers awaiting delivery in the hills and hollers of Batesville. Across Plank Road, as we sift through the past, the Batesville Market is buzzing with activity. The building was constructed around 1900 and operated as the C. S. Joseph Store. On May 2, 1914 Charles T. Page bought the store and “Declared war, not on Mexico, but on high prices in the village of Batesville!” The store passed to Charles Jr. and his wife Rose. They continued to operate the tiny post office and packed the store with everything rural neighbors and passers-by might need or want, ringer washers, ice cream, horseshoes, a true general store. The priceless element was a sense of community. “Batesville Day” was first held in May 1972 in Page’s Field (aka Lonesome’s pasture). A parade as big as the town could muster and still have an audience set off the day’s activities and still does. According to Charlie, “No one’s ever been turned down to be in the parade” so get your baton out. A 10K race, games, food, a bake sale, junky truck auction and live music all raise money for the Ruritan Club. continued on page 18

Charles III started working in the store when he was six-yearsold. The transition to his ownership was seamless. Along with his wife, Leslie, Charlie continued to meet the demands of the town in the spirit of Page’s before him. A call came to Charlie in 2003 while he was strolling Greenwich Village. It was from his realtor Norman Jenkins, and his partner Michael Clark, phoning from a café in Paris. They wanted to buy Page’s Store. “Lonesome would bite you when you parked in the pasture,” reminisced Norman. “Batesville was so country, so bucolic. It was meant to be. The store was the touchstone of the community; you bought everything at the store. You knew you were in a country store, everything was there. You saw people. You watched their kids grow up.” Norman and Michael installed the kitchen, deli case, and coolers, bringing the store additional retail options. Norman said, “You could come in and get a custom cut ribeye and some mac and cheese. We kept an ethnic section following the Page’s footsteps.” The Mexican workers at nearby Crown Orchard frequented Page’s Store for staples oft times waiting there for the red van with Maryland plates that slipped into town loaded with Latino food items. The post office underwent renovations and the vintage postal accoutrements were fitted into the store. Liza and Cid Scallet rented the property for five years. They brought the dimension of live music to Batesville. Other renters followed but none proved successful at raising the long-standing country store to fiscal success. Enter new owner Alex Struminger. Warm, affable, a guy with a clear vision for Batesville. “The store stands on three strong legs. That’s what’s needed in a country store in this day and age. Retail, deli and events.” Alex will handle convenience items like milk and eggs, both locally raised and mainstream options. There will be “something for everyone.”

Prepared take-out dinners, like rotisserie chicken, make for healthy fast food in the hamlet of Batesville. Floor manager David Tewksbury says, “We’re trying to be good listeners to the folks who truly need it. I feel like that’s really happening, that’s why people have started showing up again.” Alex adds to that, “Retail is a relationship business, so you have to have that dialog.” Weekday workshops are popping up featuring cooking, music and wine tasting. Al fresco seating below the smokehouse affords a charming spot to enjoy a sip and bite. Saturday night suppers with live music showcasing area musicians are already happening and enthusiastically attended. As the discussion continues, Kate lowers her camera and says, “I would definitely bring my kid here. She’s nine-years-old and she always complains about how nobody ever plays music that she can see because it’s always in a bar at night. She’d love to come.” To which Alex replies, “Music from 6:30 to 9:00, we’re family friendly. We have to cultivate the next generation.” BRL

Market Stabilization Continues A Nelson County real estate summary for Q1 2017
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
The first quarter is historically a slow quarter for Nelson County residential sales. Sales were less than the previous quarter (Q4), but relatively unchanged when comparing Q1 of 2017 with Q1 of 2016. Market improvement can be noted in a slightly higher price per sq ft, even though the median sales price is down. Here is a quick residential market summary for Nelson County. Sales figures are pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Q1 Countywide Overview – 45 residential properties sold in Q1 of 2017 which represents a 4.3% decrease from the same time period in 2016 when 47 properties sold. Q1 Statistical Comparison – Q1 2016 recap: 47 sales, median $207,000, average price $234,753, average price per sq ft $126.61, average days on market (DOM) 158, median DOM of 133. Q1 2017: 45 sales, median $194,000, aver-
age price $246,140, average price per sq ft $131.06, average DOM 183, median DOM of 100. In the year-end report, I mentioned that the market appears to be stabilizing. Stabilization continues as 2017 kicks off. Inventory is holding the same, currently at 268 residential properties for sale compared to the New Year start of 265. Inventory is considerable less than in years past, which may be attributing to a marginal increase in price; both the average selling price and average price per sq ft have had an incremental increase. While price is looking slightly better for the first few months of the year, some other market data points were not as encouraging. The median sales price is lower when comparing Q1 2017 with Q1 2016 and when comparing it to the 2016 year-end median as well. In addition, the time it took to sell a property increased by 16% per the average days on market. A slight uptick in price should not
Marlo Allen
mislead anyone looking to sell in 2017. Setting a market driven price at the time of listing remains important. 51% of the Q1 2017 sales sold in less than 100 average days on market. Others lingered, thus pulling down the average days on market. A quarter of the Q1 2017 sales took a cumulative period of more than 1 year to sell, with 2 of those sales actually taking 2.5 and 3.5 years to sell; before attracting a buyer, all had price reductions. Selling tip: Be encouraged by the price starting off the year in a positive direction, but don’t be fooled into having unrealistic expectation, unless you have plenty of time to kill. Q1 Sales Summary by Locality – Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 26 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 4 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 15 sales. When comparing Q1 2017 sales with Q1 2016 sales,

Stoney Creek sales remained the same with 0% change. Wintergreen sales increased by 8%, a total of 2 more sales. The county sales are off to a much slower start in 2017, with a drop in sales of 21%, which is 4 fewer sales than in Q1 2016. County sales were scattered with no particular locality accounting for the bulk of the sales. Bank owned properties are still present in the marketplace, especially within the county. 27% of the county sales in Q1 were foreclosures, which is in line with Q1 2016 when 26% were foreclosures. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. For further explanation and comparison relative to a property you want to sell or purchase, contact a real estate professional. DRIVE & DIVES It’s as if they’ve popped up overnight along US 29 in Nelson County. We’ve got the mouth-watering rundown. El Chilango Mexican Grill – FOOD TRUCK Located on Rt. 29, either in front of Ronnie’s Hair Salon, or across the road at the SPCA Thrift Shop in Colleen

Blue Ridge LIFE MAY 2017
Ronnie and Fernando have been married twenty-five years, and business partners for the past eight months. “We started with this dream eight years ago,” explains Ronnie from inside the fragrant food truck. “But it only manifested in September of last year.” Three years ago, Fernando fell while snowboarding and broke both of his wrists. Minor set-back. “Things happen,” says Fernando. “And along the road, we never give up. We never give up our dream. We work hard. So many times, we fall, but we get back up.” In addition to a winning attitude and “a little bit of natural talent”, Fernando claims cooking is a hereditary trait. “My mama, my daddy, my brother, we all cook. It’s in the family.” Serving up some traditional, home-made, heart-felt food, these two claim the real reward comes from watching the reaction of their customers as they take their first bites. “You see it on their faces, the explosion of flavor,” says Fernando grinning. These two fed me churros with their special chocolate sauce, with a surprising heat that builds as you go. They knew what they were doing, because now I’m hooked.
Cristina’s Café – GAS STATION DIVE Located on Rt. 29 South in the Sunny Mountain Store, north of Lovingston Tucked in the back of the Excel gas station, where locals may remember playing pool in the dimly lit corner, Cristina Nila has been in business for the past two years. A simple kitchen and a few dining tables have replaced the pool tables and arcade games, and the smell has significantly improved. Cristina – super sweet and shy, and a total trooper – also claims her culinary attributes are inherent. “My mom showed me, and most of the time I’m cooking the same things in my home. It’s something I love doing,” she tells me after prepping a whole tilapia for frying. “I’m so very happy, it’s a nice experience for me because never in my life could I think this was possible. Customers are so nice to me, and I appreciate it and the opportunity to serve the people, and they return to me again.”
La Michoacana – MEXICAN RESTAURANT AND BAR Located on Rt. 29 N, in the old Lovingston IGA building. We’ve all driven passed and seen the promising signs of this restaurant “Coming Soon” and “Now Hiring,” but in the near future, we’ll finally be able to see what’s been going on inside. I spoke to friend and lovely lady, Maureen Kelley over at the Nelson Tourism Center, and she confirmed the opening would be, “Really soon!” She put me in touch with Operator Edgar Gaona, who is both busy and as elusive as his signs. I was told by sources at their first location (in Charlottesville), that the Lovingston location should be opening by the time you’re reading this in print. BRL

If you need help herding the cats on your land, call Almost Home at 434-263-7722.
continued from page 28
Two pink flamingos greet us at the driveway of a home in Piney River where Almost Home’s kitty trapper is perched at the end of a string connected to a drop trap. “Originally she had upward of 15 cats,” explains Krista Waibel of Nellysford. She’s been working with Almost Home for more than a decade and has been part of the center’s Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) program for about 3 years. “Last year there were some kittens born and we were able to nab a couple of the kittens before they got to be two months old and were able to take them into Almost Home and get them tamed and adopted out. What we’re trying to do now is keep the population down by getting the cats fixed.” Spring is kitten season. The daffodils are blooming, the trees are budding and bloated cats are having litters. “Every female cat we are taking in right now is pregnant.” And that includes the orange female tabby Krista already nabbed this afternoon. She was one of the kittens that got away last year but today, the hungry momma cat-to-be was hoping to satisfy a craving when she walked under the cage. Krista has done the math.
“An unfixed male and female in a 3-year period can produce something like 6700 cats, if you think of their kittens.” Which is why spay-and-neuter clinics, like the one run by the Lynchburg Humane Society, stay full. Krista has ten spay and neuter spaces reserved there for this week as well as another ten later in the month. “Otherwise they are solidly booked.” Dr. Jessica Ligon at Lovingston Veterinary Hospital also helps with Almost Home’s feral spay and neutering needs. Before coming to Piney River this afternoon, Krista was at the Nelson-Amherst County line trying to trap the last of 10 cats that have been living behind a gas station. Once she’s done here, she heads to two different locations in Arrington. “What we’re trying to do now is I’d like to get two more adults and at least one of them is a female who is the cause of most of this,” Krista explains as her voice begins to taper. A dark colored cat has emerged from behind a shed to consider the bait. To my 8-year-old son standing patiently at my side, trapping a cat ranks pretty high on the adventure scale.

With a quick tug, Krista yanks the cord and drops the trap over the feline, now bouncing around back and forth inside the cage. “It’s a short hair tuxedo cat!” my excited son proclaims. Actually, it’s a tortoise according to Krista, as she transfers the cat to the smaller cage, draping a towel over it to calm it down.

“They’re great barn kitties. They do mice, rats, snakes and we will be happy to give somebody, help them relocate them, set them up in the barn or shed. We try to do them two at a time so that at least they’re with somebody.” And I know an 8-year-old who’d help name it for you. BRL

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure
That’s How the Weekend Goes So it’s that time of year again: Race Season! That time when I get to leave one bag packed and an eye on the next adventure. Typically my wheels start spinning down the highway late March and don’t slow until the end of October. The Virginia Off Road Series has 23 race weekends in 2017 and I thought I’d give a little insight to the makings of my weekends. With this in mind, our weekend of choice is April 15 and the race was VORS #4 Conquer the Hill at the Miller School of Albemarle. This year, the weather sized up to be perfect and the start list has more than 100 racers. The Expert Men’s Category boasts nationally-known local racers such as Jeremiah Bishop. Along with Jeremiah Bishop, the all-star cast includes 2016 VORS Expert Champ John Petrylak, 2015 VORS Expert Champ Keck Baker,
2010 Champ Joe Fish and many more incredible riders. This was the category to watch with this 4 hour endurance race. Saturday, I hit the road at 5:30 am and head out to the Miller School. When I arrived, I threw on my trail running shoes and ran the 8.5 mile course to get a feel for what the racers would be experiencing. The one thing I have liked about trail running is it gives great perspective and insight to a race course (because your pace is so much slower that biking it). Then I mingled amongst the riders before the race to see how everyone was doing/excited about the race. Once the gun goes off, I chase around to catch different parts of the race and to see how everything is unfolding. Once the race is done, it’s my time to find the next adventure. This time around with the weather looking good and no rain on the horizon, I
am planning on heading out to the George Washington National Forest for some exploring. As I am writing this pre-trip, I am not still not sure how this may unfold. The current plan is to camp at North River Primitive Campground, not too far from Todd Lake near Reddish Knob. From base, I’m thinking of running some fire roads and maybe dropping in on some singletrack that I know from the Shenandoah Mountain 100 mountain bike race. The terrain includes lots of climbing and descending. After that, I plan on making my way back to Richmond. Along the way maybe stop off at StableCraft Brewery or Pre Re Nata. While checking out a nice craft beer and thinking over the previous mountain runs, I’ll start thinking about the following weekend that will be at James River State Park with the Adventure Triathlon; Devils Backbone Brewing Company will be part of the action.
Oh, did I mention my new race series with the Virginia State Parks? It will be made up of six races where the winners will be determined by how far they race, win or lose. It’s the miles that matter. The Virginia State Parks Adventure Series will begin at James River State Park and finish up in Pocahontas State Park. Check it out and get in on the action! MAY 2017
By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC
Get the Drift Perhaps nothing creates more chaos in a landscape than heeding the words of the designer who opts for the arboretum look – a kaleidoscope of colors, shapes and heights. To the contrary, drift or mass plantings easily drown out the aforementioned noise with pure simplicity. Planting in long flowing drifts, whether perennials, wildflowers or shrubs, creates movement in the landscape by drawing the eye in and forward. By using contrasting colors of plants that bloom at similar times, like white and dark shades, the landscape can literally open up and move the eyes deep towards a structure, away from an eye sore or along a walk deeper in the landscape. With anchors of evergreens scattered in to control the movement and create height, the resulting design is simple and clean. The next purchase of that gem in the garden center will no longer be for 3, but maybe 13 or even 23 – and as we are mostly talking perennials and annuals, the impact on your wallet is minimal while the visual is a blast of color that is unparalleled. Your methods and materials will not overwhelm you but be a wonderful breath of fresh air as you move into your plant selection, mainly since you are now buying more of less. When thinking drifts, think the Nike “Swoosh” symbol – a planting of color that starts thin, thickens quickly as it turns, and then fades to nothing. It is also important to keep an open mind to all plants and even structures, as at the core of any fascinating design is the dovetailing of plant species and man’s creations. Your palette will include mostly annuals as the drift filler (in particular, those that self-sow) mixed in with other perennials and shrubs. Moving around the landscape to the ebb and flow of a carpet of grass bordered with a mass of annuals and peren-
nials can really be jaw dropping. Anchor the drift by larger evergreens and your landscape is done. Simple, clean and full of color. Call it the Occam’s razor for landscaping. An example of a shade garden drift could be as simple as a mass of ferns. Ferns are one of those plants that are rarely used in mass groupings since the thought of ferns can sometimes just draw out a lengthy yawn. Nothing could be further from the truth as its fine-textured foliage has both a sense of innocence and grace that benefits any landscape. Masses of ferns used in conjunction with annual New Guinea impatiens, pink or white for example, can create an amazing impact that will last from late spring to fall’s first frost. Keep the ferns to the middle of the border and anchor them down with boxwood, English laurels or other evergreens. Gain height with a dogwood or Japanese snowbell at the middle or back. Use the impatiens in winding drifts in the front of the ferns to create the desired impact. Sprinkle in hellebore, Virginia bluebells and bleeding hearts deeper in the border for an extended season of amazing color and contrasts. Add a bench, birdbath or birdhouse for eye candy. When moving into the sunny side of your landscape, your options open even wider. Plants that offer extended seasons of interest should always be at the top of your list. Again, annuals are just hard to beat as the main drift filler. Choose plants like wave petunias, lantana, strobilanthes, sunpatiens, black-eyed-susans and salvia. Those plants sprinkled in to create interest and extend the season, much the way the ferns did in the shade garden, can be coneflower, black-eyed susans, Russian sage, creeping phlox, candytuft and many others. Drop in a deciduous azalea or two and be sure that evergreens are present to form the ever-needed backbone of the design.
asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, When I bend my finger it hurts and I have to pull on it to make it straight again. What can I do? It sounds like you have a trigger finger. This is a common condition and can be quite painful and frustrating. People who do repetitive gripping actions are at higher risk of developing trigger finger. It is also more common in women and people with diabetes. Trigger finger occurs when there is inflammation and narrowing of the space that surrounds the tendon that bends your finger. The finger may get stuck in the bent position, or may snap when you straighten it – like a trigger. There is often finger stiffness, especially in the morning, and you may notice a painful nodule in the palm at the base of the affected finger. Tendons attach muscle to bone and are surrounded by a protective sheath. When this sheath gets inflamed, the normal gliding motion of the tendon through the sheath is affected. Continued inflammation can cause scarring, thickening and nodules that further affect the move-
Discover Why ment of the tendon. Diagnosing a trigger finger is simple and doesn’t require any fancy testing. Examining the tendons that bend the finger for tenderness, smoothness, locking and tender nodules is usually enough. If a nodule is present it will move as the finger moves because the lump is attached to the tendon that moves the finger. Treatment of trigger finger usually starts with simple measures like ice, rest and anti-inflammatories. Exercises for range of motion and splinting may also be helpful. When these measures these are not helpful a steroid injection may be indicated to decrease the inflammation. This usually takes care of the condition but may require more than one injection. If this is not helpful then surgery may be needed to open the narrowed section of the tendon. This is usually done by a hand surgeon in the operating room. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
