thepublishers In case you have forgotten, the “wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.” Not only do they go round and round “early in the morning,” they go “round and round” about midmorning as you brew your third pot of coffee. They go “round and round” early afternoon as you turn every pocket inside out looking for your lost car keys (try the ignition). They go “round and round” when you’re giving yourself whiplash in the car to make sure both kids are still buckled. Those wheels on the bus just keep going round and round and round. They. Don’t. Stop. Neither did Peyton’s tearful pleas the other day for her “yellow paper.” In one room, the wheels on the bus are going round and round and round and round (Does it ever run out of gas?) and round and round. In the kitchen, Peyton’s on the floor screaming melodramatically “I want my yellow paper! I need my yellow paper!” Because the Hello Kitty sticky notes I got in the dollar aisle weren’t good enough. No ma’am. Peyton needs the yellow sticky notes, spe-

cifically the ones in mommy’s desk. Right next to what used to be a wellorganized array of color-coded paper clips. Those have now been linked into “snakes” of various lengths and colors, by the way. Apologies to anyone who accidentally picks one up and tears off a green head or red rattle in front my son. “That’s my snake!!!” When the children (and their parents) have had enough of the yellow sticky notes and paper clips, we take them to the nearby skate ramp. Thank the universe for that wonderful monstrosity. The kids go up and down and up and down. They chase each other round and round and round and round. Like the wheels on a bus. Enjoy! Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2014

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Joy Versatile Rosé How little suffices for happiness! The least thing, the most gentle thing. – Nietzsche Joy comes to us in many forms throughout a day, throughout a lifetime: a child’s first words…first steps, an old dog living out the last of her life, rallying once more for the rabbit. Joy for me has always come most enduringly from the natural world. It’s the flecks of green folded like sleeping bats at the end of once-bare branches; it’s the shocking swash of colour where once slumbered frozen ground. Joy is spring’s soft breeze on bare skin, or her first tender light. And wine—not Rob wine snob’s embarrassing pretension or wine critic, Miss Pritchit’s, outrageous critique, but the wine of our ancestors, shaped by tradition and necessity (wine was once taken with meals in place of bacteria-laden water for overall safety and to stimulate digestion.) For wine is simple and

asks nothing more than our enjoyment. And no wine speaks to the carefree sense of joy more than rosé. So this summer, reach beyond the usual bipartisan choice… reach for rosé. There are as many colours to rosé as there are grapes to make it, but whether pale peach, outright pink, amber or dusty red, almost all rosés are easy-drinking, ambidextrous wines that pair well with a huge range of summer favourites. A wellchilled glass sipped outside under the wisteria in the last glow of light? Definite proof there’s a higher being. Hillinger Secco NV – This is one happy bubbly. The colour first entices the eye with its deep salmon hues in the glass. Produced from the first rate Austrian producer, Hillinger, and made from 100 % Pinot Noir with glimpse-of-heaven aromas of fresh raspberries, this sparkler alone can seem justification for wine’s very existence. $18 Whispering Angel,Côtes de Provence, 2013 – If the name alone doesn’t whisper sweet nothings to you, the barely blush colour will.

Swing for HealtH June 27

And if that doesn’t do it, just take a sip. It’s clean and crisp with just the right balance between fruit and refreshing acidity. Although made by Sacha Lichine, who’s pedigree harks to Bordeaux (Sacha is the son of the late Alexis Lichine of the Château Prieuré-Lichine), Whispering Angel is pure Côtes de Provence. Pair with pastas, pesto rubbed salmon, soupe de poissons, Asian cuisine, and cheese boards. $20 Rosé d’Anjou, 2013 – From the gentle countryside around the Loire Valley’s Anjou and Saumur regions, this rosé is as sweet as it sounds. With a touch of residual sugar it pairs beautifully with salty appetizers, blue cheese, crab cakes, Thai or Vietnamese sweet/sour dishes, chicken salad and smoked trout. Extremely versatile, not to mention delicious. $10 If joy this year seems distant and hardship has battered your world, or even just left it cracked, reach out for the glue—no, not the wine bottle per se, but your spouse, your friend, your neighbour…and pass the goblet of joy around.

TORTILLA FACTORY The ones in the store were no good. So this mom began making them herself. Organic. No GMO.

Stephanie Murray and James Price go through a lot of tortillas at their home. After buying them for years and never finding a good options for fresh, organic ones at the store, mom Stephanie decided to take matters into her own hands. “We researched how to make our own from whole corn and they were great,” she said. “They tasted totally different from the ones you buy at the store.” So Stephanie’s family ate more tortillas. And then her friends’ families ate more tortillas. And they were such a big hit that Stephanie decided to try to sell them at local farmers markets, calling her business ULA Tortilla (one letter in ULA for each of her three kids, Uriah, Lovissa and Asarum. And they’re still a hit so ULA Tortilla just keeps growing. Today, you can find all-natural, organic, delicious ULA Tortillas at the Nelson County Farmers Market, the Charlottesville City Market, Farmers in the Park, and Rebecca’s Natural Market. Stephanie hopes to expand to other stores in Charlottesville, Richmond, and D.C. eventually. At first, Stephanie was making everything at home. In her kitchen. By hand.

“We went through a lot of struggles on how to mass produce them for the market,” said Stephanie, who doesn’t want to take any business loans or put expensive equipment on credit cards. First, she got a small hand grinder. Then she graduated to a simple grinder made for a single family’s production (ordered special from Mexico) and a machine that cut the tortillas. Earlier this year, ULA Tortilla hosted a fundraising campaign on the crowdsourcing website IndieGogo with a goal of $15,000. They didn’t quite reach that goal, but the $5,771 they did raise from supporters was enough to buy a much better grinder - a big step in the right direction. The old grinder could do about 10 pounds an hour, but the other one can do 150 pounds in that same amount of time. continued on page 12

continued from page 11

Since the grinder was $2,700, Stephanie was able to use the rest of the money raised to secure a space at the Rockfish Valley Community Center so she could move production out of her kitchen. And now she’s experimenting with heirloom corn variety tortillas and now: tortilla chips, which are a big hit with the kids. Nachos, anyone? Stephanie’s next goal for ULA is to get a machine that sheets, cuts, and bakes the tortillas all in one - the machine she has now sheets and cuts them, but she cooks each one on the griddle by hand. The new grinder was a huge help, but this new machine would drastically cut production time, and potentially eventually her already low prices, even though she’ll still be doing the nixtamalization (steeping the corn in picking lime to break down the niacin and make nutrients easier for your body to digest) and kneading of the dough all by hand. In addition to being organic and locally made, Stephanie touts the versatility and health benefits of eating tortillas - even though many people in this area (including her and husband, James Price) did not grow up eating this traditionally South- and CentralAmerican flatbread. “It’s more of a lighter carb. There’s no gluten and it’s easier to digest than bread,” she said, adding that her kids aren’t sick of tortillas yet because there’s so much they can do with them. “Quesadillas are really easy to whip up for the kids. We do a lot of tacos. And we do enchiladas and Mexican Lasagnas and all that.” She has the best red enchilada sauce, too. She doesn’t remember where she got it now, but she’ll probably tell you if you ask… or buy some tortillas. BRL

LOCKN’ MUSIC FESTIVAL TAPS LOCAL ARTIST FOR SOAPSTONE FOUNTAIN

Kierk Ashmore-Sorensen of Alberene Soapstone Company crafted a water fountain that will be used at this year’s Lockn’ Music Festival in Arrington, September 4-7. For more information, visit locknfestival.com

Kierk Ashmore-Sorensen first encountered stone work in the early 1990s, which led him to making products out of soapstone and eventually purchasing Alberene Soapstone Company with a group of local investors in 2004. After taking on some business responsibilities, it took several years for Kierk to get to get back into the craftsmanship he’d been wanting to do since he bought the company in the first place; more artistic pieces and fewer countertops. “I do custom work in soapstone,” said Kierk. “Mainly sinks and fountains, house signs and things like that. I don’t hunt for specifics, I’m mostly here to fulfill desires.” Enter Ben Thompson, Director of Food and Beverage for Lockn’ Music Festival. continued on page 17

“We’re looking for more ways that the festival can spend money locally and also looking for more ways that the festival can identify itself from others,” said Ben, explaining that even though there are companies that rent nearly everything a festival like Lockn’ could need, but that those companies are neither local nor unique. “Once we identified several different things that we could produce locally, we just started looking at materials and craftsmen.” One of those local materials being soapstone and one of those local craftsmen being Kierk, who fashioned a water station emblazoned with the Lockn’ logo out of soapstone for the festival while another local craftsmen, Phil Cheynes of Real Refrigeration did all of the copper work. “It’s all for free bottle refills at the festival,” said Ben. “It’s important to the promoter and also to the festival as a whole that people don’t get [price-]gouged on things like that. And it also helps to encourage reusable and sustainable practices.” After Ben provided Kierk with the artwork for the Lockn’ logo and the idea for the water station, Kierk got to work, chiseling and drilling by hand in his workshop. The water station won’t be the only thing locally sourced and produced - the festival plans on having tons of local food and beverages plus bars, vendor facades and more. “It’s just a great way for us to let local artisans and craftsmen do what they do,” he said. “Because just like the soapstone is from here, so are the craftsmen.” BRL

The importance of photos in real estate marketing

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

If you know me, you know that I can be pretty serious at times. In real estate, or life in general, I can evaluate, calculate, analyze, re-analyze, and sometimes forget how important the simple things can be. There are instances when the really simple things can make all the difference. Hence, let’s revisit the basic fundamentals of marketing. According to the National Association of Realtors, 92% of buyers will use the Internet throughout the course of their home search and they deem photos to be the most useful web feature. Since a picture can be worth a thousand words, home sellers should be sure to avoid these buyer-repelling mistakes. No pictures; Oh, how many times have I pulled up a just-listed property and found not a single photo! As an agent, I can’t sell your property if I don’t know what is being offered. Without seeing photos, a buyer can’t make a purchase decision either.

Your property must have pictures in the MLS on the same day that it is listed. The first few days on market are critical. The property will be on an agent’s hot sheet as a new listing. In addition, the MLS link may be emailed to potential prospects with saved MLS searches within 24 hours of being listed. If there is no picture, you have missed an incredible opportunity to win over that homebuyer. Too few photos; if there are missing photos, buyers may assume that there is a problem. They may think that the home is outdated or poorly maintained preventing sufficient pictures from being taken. The Charlottesville MLS allows 50 pictures to be uploaded. Some of the most popular home search sites allow an agent to upload many photos such as: Realtor. com - 36, Trulia - 100, and Zillow unlimited. A good rule of thumb is to upload at least 25 photos to strike

Marlo Allen

a balance between giving potential buyers enough pictures, while not losing them by taking too much time to download. Pictures should also tell a story. Hence, pictures should not randomly jump from the shed to the bathroom to the living room; they should be assembled in a manner that flows and makes sense to the buyer.

the distance between objects and showcases a room’s depth. Proper lighting is important inside and out to ensure that photos are bight and inviting. Agents should visit a property numerous times to ensure that the sun is positioned to best highlight the exterior and NO photos should be taken on a dreary, overcast day.

Poor photo quality; Photographs are powerful bait. Good ones can lure buyers; poor ones can turn them away. Capturing great photos requires a team approach from both the seller and agent. Sellers need to be ready for photographs when an agent arrives. The house should be spotless, and free of clutter, so that rooms don’t appear cramped and rob the viewer of key features. Furniture should be positioned to define the room’s purpose without overcrowding it and blocking walkways or views. Ideally an agent should use a wide-angle camera lens to magnify

While you as a home seller may rely on the expertise of a professional to properly market your home, you should not assume that everything is being done to your standards, or more importantly to the standards of a prospective buyer. If the basics, like photos and descriptions are missing or inadequate, is the agent really committed to getting your house sold?

You wouldn’t necessarily expect a New Yorker to be spreading smiles by the piles, but that’s exactly what this Syracuse transplant has set out to do. Erin Lahan, a now avid Afton resident and mother of two, actually came by the idea naturally. Standing in her charming red-walled kitchen, adorned with all of its perfectly placed mementos and keepsakes, with watermelon juice running down our arms and smiles spread across our sticky faces, the blue-eyed and barefoot Erin talks me through it. “My daughter Spencer was much younger on the night the idea for a Pile of Smiles was conceived. I tucked her into bed after she described a tough day at school. Once she dozed off, I went straight to the drawing table to make a note to slip into her lunch box, hoping it would surprise her with a smile. The note proved to be such a positive influence that I continued.” Word spread around the lunchroom as fast as Snack-packs and Twinkies, and before long, this mom/artist/gardener/caregiver found herself a much bigger project. “One day I showed up to volunteer in Spencer’s classroom and was blown away by the excited faces and response from her lunchroom buddies…BONG! went the bell like the Gong show. They inspired me to design a line of twenty-four notes hoping to encourage creativity, confidence and individuality, nourished by a dash of good food and fun.” continued on page 35

Another awesome aspect of this project; the smiles aren’t limited to just the receiver of the note, as making the notes themselves offer a pile of smiles all on its own. “Before long, drawing became contagious at the house, as Spencer and her brother, Rye each created a great smile they wished to contribute to the pile,” continues Erin. “The lunch box notes follow children through the school year to include Birthdays and holidays like Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, all printed on 100% recycled paper.” Although the concept behind these colorful cards seems simple enough, Erin is already spreading her special light on the subject, thinking about a much bigger picture. “Since I share the concern for the health of our children and their environment with many folks in our community, I am working on a line of environmental notes to express the importance of caring for each other and our world as they are gifts to nurture and enjoy,” Erin says. “Endangered species will join the pile, along with a message that we are all the same no matter what color, size or shape our skin is in.” Summer may be upon us, and all you parents out there can enjoy a break from your lunch packing duties now, but just visualize the smile spreading across your kids face when they open their lunch box on the first day back to school and find a beautiful note from you, letting them know you love them and that you’re thinking about them. “An Etsy account is raring to go for a “Pile of Smiles” and you may find them at the Greenwood Gourmet and in the Office Quad in Crozet, where the Mount Epic Achievement charts are also on display. Special requests, artwork availability, comments and custom wrapping for ‘P.O.S.’ may be directed to eringreenw@gmail.com. Smile on. BRL

Golf for Le$$

After eight years of organizing the Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival, Larry Smith has decided that the 2014 festival will be his last. “I’ve always had multiple jobs and Wintergreen was meant to be a part-time job, though it’s been anything but. I’m reorganizing my priorities and doing things I’ve already been doing,” said Larry, a composer and pianist who lives in Connecticut, teaches at the Hartt School at Hartford, runs a company, runs another music festival (in Italy!), and is the music director for a dance company. “This is totally my decision. I have really loved being at Wintergreen and I’ve made wonderful friends there. It’s just time for me to do other things.”

In the years since Larry took over as Artistic and Executive Director (a position that before Larry was held by two people and will be held again by two people after Larry’s departure in September), the Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival has gone from having 37 events to as many as 300 (in 2010). This year, under the theme of South America, there will be 229. Larry’s organized more than 2,000 events total. “So many of what I would say are my favorites revolve around the people who are there,” he said. “People who have come and performances that have been given.” Larry said that Wintergreen is one of the most ideal places to hold a festival for music and the arts, both because of the region’s natural beauty and due to its community. “I think in the current day, music festivals are one of the real growth industries in the arts because people like to go hear music in beautiful settings, so Wintergreen was a natural and people love to come,” he said. “But the place with the natural beauty wouldn’t be anything without the people who are there to make this happen.” BRL

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

Romeo Dodge is somewhat of a prodigy. At just two and a half years old, he’s the youngest member of two search and rescue teams, including Nelson County’s Fast Initial Response Search Team (FIRST). Oh, and he’s a Labrador retriever. As the only non-human member of FIRST, Romeo is certified search and rescue dog specially trained by his handler and partner, Helene Dodge. continued on page 40

Helene and Romeo are also members of a statewide search and rescue group called K9 Alert and Helene, who has been training K9 partners and working with them on search and rescue missions for about 20 years, is also a special deputy with Buckingham County for search dog use. “I think that most people who find success at [K9 search and rescue] do it because they want to serve the community,” said Helene, who dedicates up to 15 hours a month training Romeo and her other working dog, Orso (not including active searches, at home training, or travel around the state). “Not only are [we] dog lovers and dog handlers, but [we’re] looking for a way to provide the community with a service. That’s what drew me.” A couple of decades ago, Helene was looking for a way to give back to her friends and neighbors and as a dog lover, K9 search and rescue appealed to her. She went to her first training in Northern Virginia and the rest, as they say, is history.

“I love the outdoors, I love to hike, and I love dogs,” she said. “That’s how it all came together.” But a love of dogs and the outdoors and a desire to give back is not all it takes - K9 search and rescues requires a serious commitment from both dog and handler. Certifying a new search and rescue dog require 1-2 years of training and several tests - Virginia has more than some other states. To maintain certification after passing the tests, human and K9 are required to go to training 50% of the time it’s offered, which in Virginia is every weekend. Dogs then usually “retire” after eight or nine years, but humans can have a much longer service career - Orso and Romeo are Helene’s third and fourth working dogs, respectively. “My husband is very understand and very supportive,” said Helene, who is now partially retired and has taken her job at Saunders Brothers Nursery from 40 hours a week down to 20. “They, the spouses,” have to be because you could get called up day or night, all volunteer. You’re not paid, and your expenses are mostly yours. And when dogs are working dogs, there’s a daily commitment to them.” Recently, FIRST provided an opportunity for K9 Alert and another Virginia K9 search and rescue dog team, GUARD, out of Tidewater, the opportunity to train dogs, handlers, and ground personnel to practice searching steep terrain and understand contour searches. They did a weekend event at a FIRST member’s cabin on the Piney River. K9 team members have a lot of obvious qualities that lend them to being great at search and rescue - amazing sense of smell, great eyesight, great hearing and being four-legged, they can run up and down terrain much faster. “I think the fact that they can detect somebody at great distances with poor lighting is probably the greatest virtue,”And they’re just so willing to please. They don’t want to give up, and when Romeo finds someone, he just wants them to love him. For me as a dog handler, it is the epitome of giving back. Not only am I bringing closure to the family of the victim but I’m working with this amazing animal. BRL

A Landscape Makeover on a Shoestring Not all landscape makeovers require a 5-digit budget. Sometimes simple solutions come with a big bang that leads people to think that you splurged, even when you didn’t. Following this basic makeover will get your landscape whipped into shape while leaving you with some leftover cash for a piña colada on some southern coast. Here are my ‘no-brainers’ for a budget on a shoestring… The biggest item has to be professional edging. A professional edging job is a machine cut ditch that goes straight down on the grass side and then comes up to the surface on the landscape side at a 45 degree angle. This allows the mulch to fall into the ditch against the grass and creates a strong line that separates ‘brown mulch’ from ‘green grass’. A good edging will cost most homes around $150-200 and is worth every penny of it. The professionals will use marking paint (sprayed upside down) to first mark the lines where the edging should be and then spray Roundup on the landscape side where a big of grass may be growing before they edge. Remember, if you can’t drive your lines with an SUV, they are too curvy and need to be changed. Deviating from long flowing lines is not an option. Don’t forget your street trees and other large landscape shrubs that may be outside of the landscape beds. Each of these large items usually look at home with a least 18 inches of bare earth around their canopy or trunk. Add in a bit of mulch. With the edge cut, even if you do not go with a ‘full fledge mulching job’ with 2-3 inches of mulch, adding in just a bit in some bare areas will cover some wounds and really clean up your landscape nicely. Use double ground composted mulch for the best effect and have the area weeded BEFORE

you apply it. I try to use some preemergent herbicides after the weeding and the intermittent mulch. Avoid over mulching the trunk of large landscape shrub year after year so that you end up with a large blister of mulch beneath it (nothing screams ‘Gas Station Landscape Job’ more than this). Annuals grow fast – and bloom like they are mad. Yes, they only last one growing season but the impact on the landscape can be nothing short than impressive since their primary objective is to bloom. My favorites are lantana, wave petunias, geraniums (yes, memories of my grandmother still has me planting these!), Indian Summer black-eyed Susans, sterile sunflowers (trust me, plant them) and zinnias. Plant them in flowing sweeps with colors that compliment each other – two words, ‘en masse’. A new hardscape can add a bit of interest where none exists now for often under $250. My favorites are a new birdbath, birdhouse, statuary or large container (planted with annuals) on a pedestal will add eye candy and offer conversation pieces – in particular if you also followed the above steps! Remember to locate these carefully so that each item carries the eye for a bit and drops them off on the next item. For example, reward the eye for going around curves or looking under the branches of trees. If your landscape can even whisper ‘yard sale’ based on the locality of each of your hardscapes, you need to move some … Lastly, an easy makeover involves limbing up those trees. With branches that smack you in the face each time you mow the grass or walk by them screams to me ‘Prune that damn tree!’ There are a host of reasons why you should prune trees each year (reduce visible wounds, greater air flow) but the bottom line is that they look messy and un-kept with limbs that hang low. Happy Gardening.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My ear hurts! I get swimmer’s ear every summer. What can I do to avoid it? I remember very clearly the summer I went to scout camp with a wick in my ear and instructions not to swim under any circumstances. I had swimmer’s ear and it was pure torture! It was hot and sticky and every afternoon our whole troop charged into the lake to cool down and have fun, while I sat on the dock and just hoped someone would splash me! Swimmer’s ear (doctor word: otitis externa) is an infection and inflammation of the ear canal and external ear. The surface of the ear canal is protected by wax. When the wax is removed, either by water or by a q-tip, tissue, or a finger, the exposed skin of the ear canal easily becomes irritated and infected, especially if it gets wet. That’s when the redness, swelling, itching, and PAIN begins. Remember when your mom said, “don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear”? Well, she was right. Avoid putting anything

in your ears that could disrupt that protective layer of wax. After you swim, it is important to shake your head to clear the water from your ears, or use ear drying drops that you can buy over the counter to remove the water. Some folks need to use ear plugs to keep their ears dry while they swim. Hopefully these ideas will help keep you swimming instead of sitting on the sidelines wishing you were in the water. If you do get the telltale ear itching and pain, it’s time to visit your doctor for treatment. You can expect an ear exam, possibly removal of any excess wax that may be deep in the canal holding water in, and probably combination steroid/antibiotic drops to help both calm the inflammation and fight the infection. During treatment you do have to try to keep the ear dry. Happy swimming! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Strategy #6: Fuel It! Fuel It- “It” being you. Whether you are a seasoned exerciser or a beginner, competitor or non-competitor, your body needs fuel to perform. And it needs the proper fuel to perform well. Everyone knows what it feels like to be hungry and lack energy; the chances of excelling at your game in this state decrease drastically. So, you have to prepare and know what works for your body. It may take some experimentation – so don’t try new foods on competition day. Hydration: Although there are a myriad of “sports” drinks and energy boost drinks on the market, water is still your best friend. If you are competing in an endurance event, the sugar, salt and electrolytes in some of those drinks can be helpful. If you are looking for a “recovery” drink after an endurance event, chocolate milk has many nutrients but the same benefits can be received from yogurt, fruit and 100% juice drinks. Avoid sodas. It is important to hydrate 3-4 hours before your event (and well before your daily workouts) so your body has adequate

water and so that you aren’t trying to fill the tank at the last minute, leaving you feeling bloated. Eat breakfast: eating breakfast fuels your body and brain and steadies blood sugar levels. Avoid sugary breakfasts. Try oatmeal with fruit or yogurt with granola and fruit. If you don’t like to eat in the morning, make a smoothie with frozen or fresh fruit. Drink 1-2 glasses of water in the morning. Carbs: Sometimes, folks tell me that they have “stopped eating carbs”. 50-60% of energy derived from exercise comes from carbohydrates. The art is choosing the right type of carbs. Eat whole grains, brown rice, or sweet potatoes. In addition, beans, peas and legumes are high in fiber and protein. Proteins: if you are a meat eaterchoose lean, grass fed critters to reduce fat content and to reduce additives. Tofu, kidney and garbanzo beans offer good protein. Peanut butter and nuts work well.
