thepublishers After a long winter’s nap, it’s critter season. We’ve already sacrificed a few of my Fancy Food Storage Containers (the ones that give a satisfying SNAP! when shut) to Adam’s tent caterpillar project. By “project,” we mean he collects every single one he can find and starts dropping them in the boxes. “Mama, is this an outside toy?’ he asks me as he steps into the mudroom, holding up the pint full of squirming bugs. “Oh yes,” I reply with an exaggerated smile. “Yes, you can play with those outside. Feed them to the chickens, yes?” I really thought the chickens would love them. How great would that be? Mommy does some work in the garden, or calls back a client, while the kids occupy themselves by gathering chicken treats. Domestic tranquility. I head to the garden and start to hear the clucking. Good, the chickens must be getting snacks from the kids, I think. I’m out of electric fence wire. Then the clucking gets louder. I swivel my head to see Adam clutching “Gloria” under his arms. And she’s refusing to eat the caterpillar. And insulators. I need more insulators. “Adam, I’m not so sure she’s into
them,” I said. “If they don’t eat them on their own, they’re probably not into them.” And in a moment that reminded me that my little boy is growing up way too quickly, he blew the overgrown bangs off his face and huffed away. “Okay, fine!” Okay, fine. Gloria and company don’t like tent caterpillars. Peyton has already moved on to making a paper octopus. And we won’t have room in this plot for her strawberries. “Peyton, do you still want to plant strawberries? “Silly, mummy,” she says. “We need radishes!” Sounds like a plan. Even if we grew strawberries this year, we’d have no place to keep extras for my Fancy Food Storage Containers are filled with caterpillars no one cares to eat. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Celebrating Continuity This June, the wine shop cum restaurant that some have referred to over the years as “that little shack” turns seventeen years old. Did we ever think after seventeen years that we’d still be around? Probably if we’d had time to think, not. In an age when restaurants come and go with the frequency of political scandals, and when big chains take over the once ubiquitous Mom and Pops, it now seems like a laudable if, on the grand scale, small feat to commemorate. We invite you to stop by and help us celebrate seventeen years of providing not only food and wine, but service and smiles. If you can’t stop by, celebrate this June by living life to its fullest—a clichéd phrase for sure, but one we hope to embrace nevertheless by being aware every single moment of the beauty surrounding us always. (No pipelines please.) The years at Basics have blessed us with exceptional customers whose love, loyalty and enthusiasm for the little shop spill over splashing us with contagious joy and, in the quiet reflective hours afterward, gratitude. The
years have also graced us with talented young men and women who’ve become part of our Basics family then gone on to college, seeking careers and finally settling down with families of their own. One of our greatest rewards is that of seeing our Basics children returning with their own children—and our pride wells equally when they choose to spend their free time here with us. We’ve seen changes within our walls, remodeling and such, as well as the inevitable change that occurs not only outside of walls but also outside of one’s control. Birth, death, birth, the continuous flow that is life. Yet, despite our labels of “good” change or “bad” change, it seems that each time, change has left in its wake remnants of joy and… remnants of love. And that’s something worthy of celebration. Vorin Jumel, 1er Cru, Blanc de Blancs– Can you walk to the bathroom in the morning? Can you walk outside into unpolluted air? Then celebrate life and all it offers with a bottle of Champers. The French treat Champagne like white wine (that’s what it is after all). We Americans
tend to reserve the bubbly only for special occasions when, in fact, champagne or sparkling wine is a great everyday drink and, because of its good acidity, is one of the most versatile and best wines for food. Try oysters, risottos or pastas with cream sauces, goat cheese or scrambled eggs. Before a meal, try it with salted nuts or caviar. Splurge and tell your special loved one (or yourself) “You’re worth it.” Vorin Jumel, premier cru is an ethereal blend of Champagne’s best Chardonnay grapes from the Côtes des Blancs. Notes of fragrant jasmine, fresh baking bread and hazelnuts… a little taste of heaven. $42 Or don’t splurge and pop a cork for every day drinking: Cairette de Die – An excellent demi-sec made from the Muscat grape and praised by Pliny the Elder in 77 A.D.! Look for notes of peaches and orange blossom. The balance between fruit and acidity makes this sparkling wine excellent for pairing with food, like cheese, especially stinky cheeses and blues, spring rolls or spicy dishes. Also excellent as an apéro just on its own. $18

A CHEF’S FLOCK Black Twig Farm is the perfect mountain home for sheep, wedding cakes, and family.

This is what life on a sheep farm looks like for 8-year-old Isaac. His dad, Andy, is a builder and carpenter, while his mom, Rachel, tends to the sheep and bakes wedding cakes using as many farm fresh ingredients as possible.

Blue Ridge LIFE
JUNE 2015
A little over a decade ago, Rachel Willis decided that the best way to combine her love of weaving and her husband Andy’s hatred of mowing the lawn was just to get some sheep once and for all. “We’ve just been on the adventure ever since. There have been lots of moments of glory and lots of moments that were … not so glorious,” said Rachel of her furry flock of NavajoChurro Sheep. “They have taught us a lot about ourselves and each other and the land and animals. It’s really been an incredible adventure.” Rachel, a trained chef, moved to her house on a hill in Crozet in the late 90s. Back then, she was just looking for a nice home to rent outside of Charlottesville so she could commute in for work. But she fell in love.
“I just stayed,” she said. The folks who owned the land and house she was renting agreed to sell her and Andy the house and a bit of property a few years ago and the couple decided to call it Black Twig Farm because once upon a time the land had been an orchard specializing in Black Twig Apples. These days, the farm isn’t growing many apples, but it’s got a lot going on at any given time. Rachel and Andy, along with their 8-year-old son Isaac, are always always busy. In addition to the full-time “sheepiness” of their lifestyle, Rachel owns her own cake company, Wedding Cakes by Rachel, and Andy works as a builder and carpenter. continued on page 13

Rachel trained as a savory chef but after she got busy with the sheep, she says the chef worked dropped off until about eight years ago when she got into wedding cakes “by accident.” “A friend asked me to do her wedding cake and the next thing I know I’m making business cards,” she said. “My focus is truly delicious cakes made with eggs from our own chickens, a lot of local fruit, and all natural ingredients. I’m focused on making it a cake that’s truly delicious and a wonderful dessert at the end of a wedding. That’s the chef in me.”

The sheep at Black Twig Farm are called Navajo-Churro Sheep and Rachel (who spent some time on a Navajo Reservation) said they’re considered the first American sheep breed - one that was brought over by the Spanish for meat, milk, and textiles. And while the farm does sell meat and sheepskins, Rachel’s real love is the fibers that come from her gorgeous Churros. She and Andy sheer the sheep, send it to a mill that specializes in the unique fibers of Navajo-Churro and when they get the yarns back Rachel colors them with plant dyes. “I do a lot of local plants like goldenrod and onion skin and walnut, and I also use madder that I grow,” said Rachel, who learned her new trade by reading a lot and taking a workshop (and a ton of advice) from Barbara Gentry of Stony Mountain Fiber. What she can’t find locally - indigo, Osage
Orange Wood, carmine (an ancient dye made of cochineal insects that she gets from a family run Peruvian farm) - she sources directly. “That’s been incredibly fun and a passion,” said Rachel, who dyes the fibers naturally in giant kettles over wood fires with colorful skeins hanging everywhere. “I always thought I’d be doing more weaving and I have to say I really love the dying. It’s just incredible.” Despite the hard work and long days, Rachel said no matter what is going on, her life is worth it. “You love it and you make it happen,” she said. “And luckily our whole family does it, so I get to be with my family whether we’re farming or baking. If I’m baking late into the evening my husband will come down and bring my son and help wash dishes. It’s not always glorious, but we’re in it together.” BRL

Marc Griffin of Stuarts Draft has always been athletic, but he hasn’t always been a runner. “I was actually an in-line speed skater and I was out in Arizona for a race. The day after there was a running marathon and I just said, ‘What the heck?’” said Marc, who is now considered an ultra-runner and very possibly a Guinness World Record Holder. “I just started going longer and longer from there for a challenge.” These days, it’s not unheard of – or even uncommon – for Marc to run 50 kilometer to 100 mile races. “I don’t do too many marathons,” said Marc, who works at Wintergreen Resort in the IT department and runs between 60 and 80 miles on his off weeks, “I’m not going to say they’re too short, but I usually do the longer stuff.”
Somewhere near mile 23 at this year’s Potomac River Run Marathon in Washington, D.C., Marc Griffin’s looking good with running buddy Bob Clouston running behind him.
Running has been his passion since he slowed down and switched over from speed skating (which can take you faster than 60 mph at times), but his lifelong goal has always been to have a Guinness World Record. He knew he wasn’t in the running for fastest marathon or most 100 mile races (he’s done about 11), so he started looking through some of the more unique records. “Like running a marathon dressed as Elvis,” he said. “There were a lot of records for costumes but anybody can put on a costume and run. I want something different. Something a little harder.” So Marc strapped on some handcuffs – yes, legitimate handcuffs – and ran 26.2 miles in 3 hours and 21 seconds – his fastest marathon yet and almost half an hour faster than the last guy to run a marathon in handcuffs (during the London Marathon while also dressed as a monk). Bob Clouston, a running buddy of Marc’s from Wintergreen, said that record breaking is just the kind of crazy thing he would expect from Marc. “I thought it was the usual crazy Marc thing to do and that he would probably do it because when he sets his mind to something he gets it done,” said Bob. “I’m really impressed with him. It’s just amazing his consistency; it just really impresses me how much he runs and how consistent he is.”

Marc’s record attempt took place during the Potomac River Run Marathon on May 3 in Washington, D.C. a smaller, quieter race. With fewer people on the roads and trails, Marc got his fair share of stares and snickers – especially when a police car ended up right behind the guy running in cuffs. “It’s funny because [the other runners] think you’re out of earshot but because it’s so quiet you’ll hear them ask ‘Is that guy in handcuffs?’ or ‘What the heck is that guy doing?’” he said. To be considered for a Guinness World Record, Marc had to write to Guinness and announce his attempt. Six to eight weeks later they say yes and then you have to plan the whole thing out. For his marathon-length record attempt, Guinness told Marc he had to get photos or video at every single mile of the run. “I was pretty nervous about that,” he said. “Usually if you go out too hard and blow out, who cares. Here I invited seven friends to take pictures, I announced it to Guinness. If I blow out it’s kind of embarrassing.” But Marc had nothing to worry about. Finishing at 3:21:46, Marc broke his personal marathon record as well as the Guinness record. “He said he was running strong and even I was having trouble keeping up with him,” said Bob, who Marc had enlisted to be one of the photographic documentarians. “At that point, I knew he had it and he was running strong and he could have walked in and easily broken the record.” It may take several weeks before the evidence of Marc’s run is submitted and reviewed by Guinness officials. Until then, Marc is the unofficial world record holder for running a marathon with handcuffs. Before Marc’s feat becomes an official Guinness World Record, Marc must submit the evidence to officials for review. That could take several weeks. Until then, Marc’s just your average 30-something guy with a wife and two kids who ran a marathon with handcuffs. BRL

The truth behind several home buying myths
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
When buying a home it seems everyone has a story to tell and advice to offer. With so much information circulating around, it can be hard for a prospective buyer to glean the “golden nuggets” of information. In reality, many buyers get bogged down with half-truths and myths that can severely impede the purchase process. If you are thinking about buying a home, avoid falling for these common misconceptions. Myth: You don’t need a real estate agent. Truth: While good information can be acquired from friends, books, and the Internet, it cannot replace the wealth of knowledge of an experienced professional. Myth: I should buy the house from the listing agent. Truth: The listing agent is contractually bound to represent the seller. You can choose an agent to represent you for FREE! As long as the property is listed (not a for sale by owner), the
seller is offering to pay the buyer’s agent. A buyer’s agent, representing your best interest, can negotiate for you and guide you through the ins and outs of working with sellers, lenders, appraisers, attorneys, and inspectors. Myth: You can afford it! Truth: Owning a home is a financial commitment. You need to know that you can handle the payments. Have a lender verify what you can afford and grant pre-approval before beginning to search. Myth: You won’t be able to get financing. Truth: The “everybody buys” approach to lending is a thing of the past. However, it is not impossible to secure financing. There are loan programs available for borrowers with less than perfect credit and little to no downpayment. Myth: If something appears on the inspection report, the seller
Marlo Allen
has to fix it. Truth: Having a home inspection contingency allows the purchaser to have an inspection to determine the condition of the home. Based on the inspection findings, the buyer can terminate the contract or make a repair request. The seller has the option to accept, deny, or negotiate the requested items. If the seller does reject or renegotiate the repairs, the purchaser can decide to accept the repair response, or if still unacceptable, can terminate the contract. Myth: Title insurance covers everything that goes wrong with a house after the sale. Truth: Title insurance is not a home warranty; it will not cover you in the event of a leaky roof or broken appliance. Title insurance offers protection in the event that an undetected lien on the property should surface. Even in this scenario, you may or may not be protected. If your home was mortgaged,
434-996-3525

then the lender will be protected. Unless you purchased owners title insurance, your portion of the investment could be at risk of loss. Myth: The closing date on the contract is the exact date that you will close. Truth: The settlement date is typically written so that the closing shall occur “on or about” a specified date. Issues might occur in relation to the loan, title, and/or inspections that can create a delay. Establish a flexible plan of action to ensure that you are not stuck with “no place to go”. There are many more myths, so enlist the help of a buyer’s agent so you can buy with confidence! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Taxes and Estate Planning By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC
Time is money. We’ll help you save both.
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” But what happens when these two collide? I am often asked about what sort of taxes might be due when a person passes. I usually break the tax analysis down into four basic categories. The first category, the Estate Tax, is sometimes (although incorrectly) called the death tax or the inheritance tax. In reality, there is no such thing in Virginia as the inheritance tax or the death tax. Virginia stopped collecting estate tax some years ago as a result of the tax changes effected by the Bush era tax reforms. However, the federal estate tax still exists and is collected on those estates with a value above $5.4 million. If you have an estate value above this, without proper planning you should expect to pay the IRS nearly half of every dollar above the $5.4 million threshold in estate taxes. The second category is the Gift Tax. Gift taxes are due when gifts are made during a person’s lifetime, if the gift exceeds more than the annual allowable gift-tax free amount of $14,000 per recipient, often called the annual exclusion amount. A significant change occurred to the Gift Tax scenario when the Congress “unified” the Gift Tax and Estate Tax laws. In common language, this unification now has the effect of reducing the amount of the Estate Tax exemption of $5.4 million dollar for dollar by the amount of the lifetime gifts that exceeded the annual exclusion amount. For example, if you gave away a $1,000,000 farm or business asset to a child during your lifetime, you will now only be able to pass $4.4M million Estate Tax free.

Capital Gains Taxes form the third category. Capital Gains Taxes are unusual in estate planning, as most assets will usually get a step-up in basis after death. However, this may be problematic for a surviving spouse on assets which were titled only in their own name. A careful inspection of your particular situation must be done to evaluate the likelihood of any Capital Gains Taxes. Income Taxes, our last category, are the lurking surprise for most beneficiaries. Income taxes are payable to the IRS by your beneficiaries on certain types of assets you may leave them. Retirement assets form the bulk of this kind of taxable scenario. For example, every IRA dollar you leave to your beneficiaries from your traditional IRA has an income taxable consequence to them. Similarly, deferred growth inside an annuity will be taxable to your beneficiaries upon receiving those dollars. I have personally witnessed beneficiaries of an IRA incur nearly 40% income tax on a single inherited IRA distribution! Planning strategies exist to significantly reduce taxes but should only be implemented with the assistance of an experienced estate planning attorney, often in collaboration with your financial advisor.

MUSIC IN UNUSUAL PLACES, such as outdoors at this overlook in 2008, is part of what has made Wintergreen Performing Arts’ 20-year run so memorable. For details on this year’s Summer Music Festival, visit WintergreenPerformingArts.org

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS
ENCORE! Wintergreen Performing Arts celebrates 20 years of music in the mountains.
The 2015 Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy is toasting twenty years of music in the mountains. While the official festival started just 18 years ago, Wintergreen Performing Arts started in the living room of Sarah McCracken on June 24, 1995. “I just called up a few people and said, ‘Would you be interested in having music here at Wintergreen?’” said Sarah, who lived in the Wintergreen area from 1993 until very recently. When she arrived in the early ‘90s, she was surprised by the lack of cultural activities the area had to offer. “First of all, it’s a beautiful area. It’s on a mountain. It’s beautiful scenery. It’s a great setting for music outdoor and indoor. I thought it would add a great deal of value to the resort in addition to the sports that they did,” she remembers. “I realize they had tennis, golf, skiing, but nothing cultural. Nothing to stimulate people. And Wintergreen has a lot of retirees and retirees are often interested in culture and education. Sports are fine, but stretching your mind is also important.” That first year, Wintergreen Performing Arts had three “pass the hat” concerts in living rooms around the resort. The next year, they got incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization and had 12 concerts where they
30

finally started selling tickets. Twenty years later, this year’s Festival features almost 200 events happening in a month, including at least 20 world premieres, an educational academy, and performers from around the world. Sarah said she’s amazed that the festival is still going 20 years later, but now she’s sure it will still be going for many, many more years in the future, especially now that the organization has a huge support group - including paid professionals - keeping it going. And that support group acknowledges that none of this would have been possible without Sarah and her colleagues two decades ago. “I think it’s always important when a group of people make the commitment to enliven their community with the arts,” said Erin Freeman, newly hired Artistic Director for Wintergreen Performing Arts. “That’s always something to celebrate. So for that to have taken place 20 years ago is a significant event and for those people to have stayed committed to it for 20 years is remarkable. I think that’s worthy of celebrating.” And yes. Of course Sarah will be making the trip back to Wintergreen for a month of musical celebration. BRL

When I walked into E&J’s Deli Pub in Waynesboro recently, it felt kind of weird. But that’s because it felt like home. And that atmosphere isn’t easy to create. Especially the first time you walk in. There aren’t too many bars like that left - a place where blue collar and white collar drink together. It was packed with hard-working, good people. And talented musicians playing old favorites for shaggin’ or flatfootin’. “Mark, bring your harp up. We gone’ be in A on this one,” Danny Goodson beckoned with the cool of a seasoned performer from a corner bandstand. Mark Hewitt sat in with the Goodsons on blues harp for a number or two, and between his highlights, he took to the floor to dance with his wife. On stage, Danny plays guitar, saxophone, and sings. He even has a sweet little percussion rig with a cowbell, conga, and splash cymbal. His sister, Janice, is a tight bassist.

“We’ve always done well here,” she said. “They’ve always danced. And we only play ‘til 10 o’clock, so we can still go hear the bands.” Music pumps through their veins, and the Goodsons learned from their father, Chuck Goodson. Danny smiled, “Our dad was a jazz drummer. He got us into music.” Chuck played jazz in the Army. He was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War, and he had the honor of swinging time during the inaugurations of Presidents Ford and Johnson. The Goodsons have been gigging for about 20 years, and they have a monthly spot at E&J’s Deli Pub, joined by Joe Manor on drums and Bob Wilkinson on lead guitar. They keep the crowd dancing with covers from Alison Krauss to Creedence Clearwater Revival. E&J’s offers live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. And it’s a relatively new thing, having started just this spring. You can’t miss the music schedule, posted by the bar in bold color on a hefty chalk board. Among the Goodsons, it includes local favorites like Eli Cook and Jacob Allen. And unlike so many bars, the sound in E&J’s is pretty good. In February of 2014, Jon and Erica Stallard – the namesakes of the pub – opened E&J’s Waynesboro-style in a storefront next to Sharp Shopper. This is a popular trend in town, and you may remember the Hot Spot, a Rock ‘n’ Roll club that fit perfectly out of place beside Peebles. But E&J’s is different. They have the usual – a good menu and local libations from Wild Wolf, Devil’s Backbone, South Street, and Bold Rock among others. But it’s the old school, honky tonk atmosphere that sets it apart from other drinking holes and music halls in the area.
All ages flock to E&J’s to shake it. It’s a place where you can really let go after a long work week. But this bar isn’t about being hip to the scene. It has craft beer, but it comes with a down home feeling. And it has a family atmosphere. The beat drops at about 7pm and stops at 10, so a morning after E&J’s ain’t so bad. That hometown charm is missing from so many beer joints today – plus the freedom to move the tables and chairs aside to make a dancefloor. As Mark Hewitt and his wife cut a rug amidst a dense, blurred crowd, the regulars lined the bar. I pulled up beside valley native, John Bevins. “We come here to party a bit.” And the party will be for the benefit of the common good on August 5 through 8. Some damned good local bands, including Gypsy Town, Brent Hull and Joe Tyree from Maybe Tomorrow, and the Eli Cook Band, will hit the stage that week. The proceeds from E&J’s signature wings will be donated to local charities. And to make the party hopier, August is Virginia Craft Beer Month, so you can expect an excellent beer selection. Local breweries will showcase their brews with nightly tap takeovers. And for the shameless, there will even be sponsored games of Cards Against Humanity. If you want to dance and drink good beer with good people for a good cause, E&J’s is just the bar. BRL

Everyone eats. Everyone drinks. You can eat and drink responsibly and boringly or you can eat and drink responsibly and deliciously. Ethan and Kate Zuckerman of Barefoot Bucha encourage the latter. About five years ago, the husband and wife team set out to make kombucha – a naturally carbonated raw tea made by fermenting tea and sugar that is both tasty and natural. With big ideas, there can be big disruptions, but the Zuckermans wanted to make sure that their Barefoot Bucha had big flavor with a small footprint and a sustainable future. They keep waste down by living a commitment to regional distribution and offering their kombucha on draft using refillable bottles. Since starting their business out of the back of a beat up old Honda Civic five years ago, Ethan and Kate have saved more than 250,000 bottles through the company’s unique refillable bottle model. “Hitting the ‘250,000 bottles saved’ mark really has me inspired!” said Head Brewer Ethan. “It feels like a validation of our refillable model, a unique way of doing things that we really believe in. Bringing your own bottles is not for everyone, but people who drink our kombucha tend to be really loyal to our model and excited about the positive contribution they are making by reusing their bottles.” Barefoot Bucha is available at various grocery stores and markets throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Since 2010, kombucha drinkers have been using the bottles provided by Barefoot Bucha to fill up and as of April 2015, the 25,000 bottles in circulation have each ben used an average of 10 times. “We want to inspire our customers to be more conscious consumers, to think about the real impact that their purchasing decisions have in the world,” said Ethan. “Saving this many bottles makes the impact of our mission tangible. At the end of the day, that’s what excites me the most about my job.” BRL

Rarely is there a moment without music at North Branch School. But NBS plays its own tune. Talented teachers and musicians, Charlotte Zinsser Booth and Katrien Vance lead a recorder wind ensemble, and their alternative learning environment has made some great artists. NBS alums, Bram and Kai Crowe-Getty, are touring Virginia, rockin’ with Lord Nelson. But sometimes they jam with Emmet Danley, a rising eighth grader at NBS who has an ear and a knack for slapping bass. When I began teaching at NBS in 2012, I noticed something amazing. Those kids can sight-read music - in elementary and middle school! But I wondered . . . why couldn’t I remember any North Branchers in band at Nelson County High School? I realized that without access to instruments, these amazing young musicians could not audition for high school band. So I wanted to plant a band program at NBS. After talking to Charlotte and Katrien, I began with a Facebook post last spring in search of donated instruments. Over the next few months, I received dozens of messages, and instruments poured into my apartment on Wintergreen. My best friends and fellow musicians, Jacob and Jennifer Tal, donated over $1,000 to a NBS music fund through their non-profit brew-tour business, Tours for Tunes. I couldn’t believe the generosity. Kristin Baltes, music teacher at Covenant School, encouraged me along the way. “Jon, this kind of thing just doesn’t happen. No school gets that lucky,” she told me.

SOUND LEARNING
North Branch School has always marched to a different beat. And now with its thriving band program, the school is trying to keep the rhythm up.
I left NBS last fall to tour as a bassist, but I had a winter break ahead during which I could offer a band elective. January approached, and I grew nervous. As I cleaned the instruments and tested them for repairs, I remembered just how moody brass and woodwinds can be. I couldn’t get a tone out of the flutes and only squeaks out of the clarinets. I braced myself for some very frustrated kids. Fortunately, I had the help of my co-teachers. Stuart Gunter stepped in to teach percussion. Margaret Lambert guided those squeaks out of the woodwinds. They have even kept the program alive this spring as I had to leave the classroom. We began class by naming our instrument – to help find its personality and to respect it. Playing music is a relationship. Sometimes you get lost in ecstasy. Sometimes you just want to break your instrument to pieces. As the kids opened their cases, assembled their horns, and wetted their reeds, smiles filled the room. A month later they were ready to perform in assembly. Those recorders had prepared them so well. Their ears were trained, they had good embouchure, and they could read music. Riding home after his first day of band class, Nathan Vance heard a saxophone on the radio. He asked his mom, Katrien, “How do they do that!?!? I have so much respect for saxophone players now!” A few months later, Nathan is thinking of auditioning for band in high school next year. He even finished the elective by improvising in a duo with me at a school-wide assembly. No easy feat. BRL 38

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure
Adapt & Stay the Course Boy, how time flies. This past month, we successfully navigated through numerous adventures: the first Adventure on the James Games at the James River State Park, witnessed VORS #4-6 traveling to Danville, Charlottesville and Douthat State Park. Our first James River State Park: ‘AJG – Adventure Triathlon’ was a great example of the thrills and spills of being a race director/promoter. April 18th is one of the most active days of spring with numerous big off road events including the Bel Monte Trail Run over in the Sherando area. Also, Mother Nature is always waiting for an opportunity to make your day more interesting. Some would wonder why we do these things. Well, mostly to challenge you! The week leading up to the Adventure Triathlon race start, we experienced a good dose of rain in the western part of the state. The
James River, where as flood stage was not reached, achieved a volume level well over 12,000cfs (safety concerns start at 7,000cfs). With safety in mind, we opted to switch out the kayak portion for an additional run segment creating a run-bike-run: the Adventure Duathlon. Race day was another whole story as the weather was perfect. It was a little unseasonably warm but otherwise perfect with a river still well above normal. The competition was great with the top participants exceeding our expected times. The race course was comprised of a 3 mile trail run, 8 mile mountain bike and a repeat of the 3 mile run. Brad Fiala took top Solo Male with a time of 1hr 36min. Carrie Parker took Top Solo Female honors with a time of 1hr 52min. Very impressive! When all was said and done, the Park officials were thrilled with the event regardless of the ‘first years’ thrills. We have already begun con-
versations for next year’s race. If you have any thoughts, you can email me at the above address. We’d love to hear from you. Not to slow the pace, the following day we charged down to Danville for VORS #4 Southern Virginia Shootout, which was also the USAC Virginia State Championship. This time we were able to watch some great racing as spectators. The next two weekends were in Charlottesville for VORS #5 Conquer the Hill and then on to VORS #6 Middle Mountain Momma at Douthat State Park…. Busy time we live in! By the time you read this, we will have headed to Richmond for the Dominion Riverrock weekend, Pennsylvania for the Dirt Rag Mountain Bike Festival, Wintergreen for VORS #8 Cliffhanger Challenge and then Skyline Drive for some camping and hiking! Speaking of camping and hiking how does this sound? We are heading over to Big Meadows for the
camping component. The last time I camped there we found ourselves in a wind storm with our tent being pushed down on top of us most of the night. That was fun. Jake, my Jack Russell, bundled right up beside me for the night. Our hiking plan is to head down White Oak Canyon and then up Old Rag and back. We have our fingers crossed for good weather. It’ll be a long day. Trager Bros Coffee’s Quad Tall Latte is a ‘must try’ for the person that takes their coffee seriously! For the mountain bikers of the BRL Community, check our Virginia Off Road Series schedule for some local races! That about wraps it up for now… Stay tuned as we, James River State Park, are working on our 4 Hour Sprint Adventure Race on July 18th… jrsp.cycleva.com for more details. Join Us. Email us and let us know how you are Embracing your Adventure! Cheers!

A Summer’s Edge Every year as I prepare for another season of grilling, playing and entertaining outside, I dig ‘summer’ out of the garage and proceed with a deliberate and pre-planned migration of furniture and plants to the patio areas. What plants a landscape designer leans on for their personal use speaks loudly to the general public since we really don’t have time for ‘it may just grow this year.’ Here is my list of blue-chip plants that get called on frequently after the umbrellas, patio chairs and fountains have re-enlisted in another summer’s Edge. My first recollection of this vine was in summer of 1990 while I was working for Monrovia Nursery Company in Azusa, California. Mandevilla ‘Alice DuPont’ is one of those heirloom vines that have no equal. Growing to over 15+ feet in one season, your trellis, mailbox or birdhouse post really has no chance of repelling this invader – nor would you want them to. Adorned with a multitude of large, cotton candy pink, trumpet shaped blooms, this guy is as reliable and durable as they come and is unmatched in splendor. However, don’t be fooled in the garden center by plant breeders who continue to market and sell ‘the next’ Mandevilla. Buy ‘Alice DuPont’ or take your trowel and time into your own hands. Treat with Bayer Systemic Insecticide to avoid aphid and spider mite infestations. For years I would do a dozen different combination planters in our large urns around our patio and on our back porch baskets. The mix was always nice in color but the maintenance was a bit more than I really cared to perform. For the hanging baskets, I gravitated towards another old standby, the Boston Fern. No frills, no lavish color – just a nice green color with fronds gently drooping over the container. For the large containers that were in mostly sun, I call on Kimberly Queen fern.
Growing upright to about 28 inches tall with a similar green as the Boston Fern, the Kimberly Queen fern can take on a multitude of applications – from a center piece in mixed containers to standing alone in a large container. Like sentries standing in front of my garage, two small concrete containers flank a post on either side. These containers present a unique predicament in that they are small and rest in full blazing sun – two negatives when it comes to plant growth for an entire summer. Enter Draceana indivisa or commonly known as Dracaena spike. No frills, no cartwheels, just a medium green, single ‘trunk’, wide blade, grass-like plant growing to about 18 inches. Reminds me of a pineapple plant – but without the pineapple. Non-stiff leaves allows for use even around children. Drought tolerant (hence can be grown in those small concrete, full sun planters). Those single planters, medium in size, that sit on the bar or around the outdoor shower area, continue the tradition of geraniums – a tradition that began as far back as 1975 where I can still see my grandmother coaching me from her patio chair in the dead-heading of the geraniums on her patio. Cheap labor… Not much has changed as I fully understand why she too chose these heat and drought tolerant annuals. Go for the old fashion, cutting varieties and yes, employ your local grandchild, child or other passing youth to aid in the deadheading. For the landscape beds, you may need to be committed to some psychiatric ward if you continue to steer away from lantana. Yes, they are that good. Mixing in some ‘Wave’ Petunias, ‘Black & Blue’ Salvia, ‘Indian Summer’ Rudbeckia, Strobilanthes, Cosmos and Cleome provides a nice color spectrum well into fall. Let the summer fun begin…
asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, I have pain in my right side from time to time. Could I have gall stones? You certainly could, and if you do I’m sorry to hear it! The gallbladder is a storage organ that sits under the liver on the right side of the upper belly. It is like a muscular bag that holds bile which is a juice that helps with fat digestion. When the ingredients in the juice are just right (just wrong) solids can form and become like little “stones.” In fact, a lot of people have these stones and never know it. But, for some they become a problem. The gall bladder squeezes when you eat a meal, particularly a fatty one, and forces the bile out through a little tube into the intestine. If you have gall stones, it isn’t hard to picture one of the stones getting shoved into the tube and then blocking it. So, the gallbladder is trying to force fluid out of a blocked up tube and that hurts! It can feel like an ache or even a sharp pain in the right upper belly. Often the pain can be felt in the
back or even right shoulder. When the gallbladder stops squeezing (usually 3 or 4 hours later) then the stone can drop back into the sack and the pain quits. But, eat another fatty meal and bam! On comes the pain again. Of course, it is not always that simple. Sometimes bad stuff happens like the stone gets stuck permanently in the tube which can cause lasting pain and fever. Or, sometimes pain that feels like it could be gallstone pain is something else such as a pulled muscle, heartburn, appendicitis, or even heart pain. That is why it is important to see your doctor if you do have symptoms like this. You need to find out what is causing your pain. If it does turn out to be the gallbladder, then fortunately it is fairly easy to fix with surgery or in some cases medicine. Hope this helps! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Yoga During Stressful Times There are many times in life where you experience loss, grief, strife and even periods of depression. Hardship arrives in many forms; no one is immune from it. During those times, the body holds your emotional distress in different ways: gastrointestinal pain, headaches, rashes, muscles aches and pain and loss of appetite and sleep. The body may have a feeling of heaviness to it. And there can be a lack of desire to exercise due to being overwhelmed. Often, your physical health takes a back seat during these times. Yoga is very beneficial in times of stress as yoga is the union of mind and body. It doesn’t remove the stresses in your life but changes how you respond to it. It changes your outlook on the environment around you. How? Simply by paying attention and becoming aware of your body and your breath; and being mindful of moments and how you are in those moments. First, pausing and noticing your breath gives you the opportunity to
slow down and notice what is happening within you and around you. Secondly, the yoga poses gently bring awareness to where your body is holding tension. Opening the body’s restrictions improves tissue healing, posture, alignment, flexibility and strength. If you have less aches and pains, you have a better opportunity to face daily concerns with more patience and understanding. You will be less reactive. Thirdly, continued yoga practice unites the mind, the body and the breath so when problems arise (as they will), your mind will be open. You will be able to make decisions with more clarity. Your perspective on the situation will be calmer. Many feel as if they don’t have time for a 60 or 90 minute class daily. That’s OK. You can practice breathing awareness anywhere and even 10 minutes of yoga a day is beneficial. Or try to intersperse various yoga poses throughout your day. Part of the practice is to take moments to pause and notice during the day. It’s transforming.
