thepublishers I know the sound of those footsteps. “Mommy, we’ve got a problem.” And I knew the tear streaming down his cheek – the one he had tried his best to hold back – was real. “One of my fish is dead,” Adam managed to say. “He’s at the bottom of the tank.” The kids have seen us bury our dogs and they’ve seen chickens go missing. They hear the hunters during deer season and they’ve seen me creep down the field with a rabbit call. They know the two pigs we’re raising will be turned into bacon, chops and sausage in a few weeks. But none of this can prepare you for the loss of your first fish. “It’s Jackson,” he stammered, as I dipped the net into the water and scooped him out. “But he can’t breathe now!” Adam exclaimed. “It’s okay, Adam. He’s dead,” a calm Peyton offered. Where does a fish go? Does he get to swim again? What will the color of the water be? Hopefully not green with algae, a mistake of ours when we set the tank in front of the sunny bedroom window. “Do you want to come with me to the creek?” He shook his head.

Seeing bright orange Jackson rest on a stark white paper towel was enough of a final farewell. Adam had been the perfect fish daddy, diligently feeding him every morning. The pause that came after the daily morning alarm of Adam jumping down from his bunk bed was of him sprinkling a pinch of food in the water, watching Jackson, Jerry and Jeffrey swim towards it. The UPS man came the next day with gifts we had forgotten we had ordered. Going through a big phase on sealife, Adam’s smile came back when he opened up his box to find a squid. Peyton – who seems to have gone from Peppa, to ponies, to poop – pulled out a plush doll in the shape of a poop emoji. This one has a bow above the eyes because “it’s a girl.” RIP, sweet Jackson. As the saying goes, poop emojis happen. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford JUNE 2017

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Basics Turns Twenty ! Twenty years ago when a couple of idealistic ladies decided to bring French wine and cheese to the outpost of Nellysford, who’d have thought “that little shack” would still be around? Especially with a cumbersome name like Basic Necessities. What in the heck did we sell anyway, toilet paper? But we are still around, twenty years later, and happy to be celebrating with a truly special, and ever growing, community. So how did that odd name come about? I always tell people the short version: that there was back then no good wine, bread, cheese or chocolate easily available. And that I wanted to do something about it, having been used to the riches of Paris at my doorstep. This is true. But there’s another more humble story, which few folks until now know. A Tale of Salad Dressing: I’d been teaching for various universities in Paris, but when I returned to the States, after years away, I found I couldn’t get a job. I applied at fouryear colleges, then two-year colleges, even prep schools. Nothing doing. Around that time, I was always mak-

ing a French vinaigrette to emulate that of France, and Judy said I should try to get it into the Kroger (there was no Whole Foods back then). The salad dressing never made it into Kroger, but a little shop was created out of which we’d sell it. The truth was that the shop was a very basic, and humble, necessity if I wanted to eat. Basics, as it became known, was to be a simple wine bar, its décor reminiscent of Provence. But what with the alcohol regulations in Virginia, we needed to sell more than the occasional cheese or charcuterie plate. It morphed into a restaurant, and the rest is local history. While I founded Basics, it would not be what it is today without the help of many people along the way. I would like to thank my co-owners, Sallie and Rosie. As well as past owners Bev, Keith and Nat. Those people without whom Basics would not be Basics: my mother, Sue, who’s been making soups every one of those twenty years; Judy, who started it with me; Amy, who makes folding napkins into an art form. All of our musicians, some of whom received

their start at Basics: Virginia, Victor, Pete, Micah, Justin, Miles, Eve, Susanne and Sally Rose. Our vendors, most of whom live right around the corner, so to speak. (Lisa, Rachel, Dan, Heather & Ben, Anne, Gary, Ara, Sarah, Maria, Stephanie, Patti & Bill, Katherine, Nancy, Sue, Will, Cassy & Adam. For a full list, have a peek at our website.) Our neighbors Danny, Lina, F.P., Flick and Deanne. And most of all, our crazy, wonderful staff, both past and faithful present (Mae, Marie, Rose, Tayah, Jaden, Jason, Ben, Clara, Ginger, Kristin & Kristin, and Isis, resident feline, although she doesn’t do much work.) And thank you, our customers, who keep us smiling, and who, with any luck, will see us through another decade or so. We’ll be celebrating all month, so check our newsletter for events, and stop on by! Customer favorite over the years: Don Rámon 2014– One of the things we’ve tried to do is offer great wines at great prices. Don Rámon, a Spanish wine and blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, has the richness, body and vibrant fruit of a wine twice the price. $9

On a brisk Sunday morning, a group of strangers quietly gathered together in an outdoor classroom in Afton, which consisted only of an authentic teepee, and of blankets and wooden benches which formed a circle around a dormant fire-pit.

12

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2017

Kate Knott, Co-founder and Director of Living Earth School, sat on one of those blankets, addressed the class, and subsequently created a spark using primitive bow-drill fire methods. Each member of the group took their turn blowing into the tinder bundle which Kate cradled in her bare hands, fueling a fire with our collaborated breaths, unifying us thenceforth. “There’s something powerful that brings everybody together when a fire is lit in that kind of manner; with intention. And it brings back an ancient wisdom, and everybody sees that, and it just centers the whole experience,” says Kate. “Stories are told around it, people are dancing with drums around it, we’re cooking on it; it’s that collective experience that creates a central hold of the camp. It’s the center heartbeat of our whole camp.”

The mushroom guru for today’s lesson, Charlie Aller and Kate sat facing each other around the now lively, pulsing fire. Neither of them were wearing shoes. “I went to Virginia Tech and studied horticulture science originally, and I got really obsessed with insects during that time and started working with the entomology department,” Charlie tells the class. “I kind of had a passing interest in entomopathogenic fungi at that time, which has now blossomed into something bigger.” His fixation and seemingly unbounded knowledge on the subject was obvious from the start. “It was really just a flirtation at first, I was seeing them and kind of titillated by how pretty they were and how they were unlike anything I had ever seen before, even though I’m sure I had seen all of them in the past. I just started to pick them up and smell them and just become generally pretty interested in them from a sensory standpoint,” explains Charlie. “And there was a teacher there who was a real mountain man, and he said, ‘Look man, those things are dangerous. And if you’re gonna start smelling them, I know you’re gonna start eating them soon. So, you need to go find out how to identify them.’ And I just got completely obsessed with identifying mushrooms, studying them in books and on the internet. I’ve been doing that ever since and it’s been about five years now.” Capable of identifying nearly any specimen and dissecting the Latin root of each name, his skills only shone further once we breached the boundaries of the classroom and entered the untamed forest in a united search of treasure.

We roamed the hillsides for hours, taking in all of nature’s quiet offerings, calling Charlie’s name when we found something that needed classifying, and filling our baskets with the delicate fungal finds. Charlie never did put on shoes. I didn’t find out until after the class was over that it was actually Charlie’ first time teaching this course with the Living Earth School. And I’ll be so bold as to say, the guy’s a natural. L.E.S., which has been operating under the guidance of Kate and her husband, Hub since 2002, offers “Earth-based mentoring” for essentially all age ranges. And it was founded with nothing but the purest of intentions. “I was on a deep nature connection journey on my own starting in high school, not having any mentors or anybody showing me the way of, ‘what are these plants’ or ‘this is how you make a fire.’ I was just discovering it on my own,” Kate explained. “I started getting into field study courses in high school and had amazing transformative experiences. And college became a journey of deeply connecting with nature on my own, sleeping outside, taking every environmental science course I could take.” It was there that Kate made another important connection. “Hub and I met at college, at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and we just knew we wanted to have a school where we could share our love for the earth with other people, and connect other people with this amazing planet we live on.” Those hoping to seek the forest for solace, meet people who speak their language, or brush up on survival skills need look no further. L.E.S. offers, “Anywhere from tracking animals to making your own wooden bow, leather working, friction by fire classes, how to live and survive in a shelter, how to forage from natures garden which surrounds us.” These courses are so unique and in such high demand, a man from Virginia Beach traveled hours just to attend the class. Howard Douglas was sporting a camouflage ball-cap and a fishing jacket, and I overheard him telling someone he didn’t fish, “But you can never have too many pockets.” He wasn’t your typical “nature-lover,” in that he usually spent his time hunting deer and turkey. “I usually have my eyes looking at the trees, very seldom do I look down, unless I’m looking for snakes. This kinda tunes me into looking for mushrooms now, because I see them a lot in the woods,” Douglas explains. “I might quit huntin’ animals and start huntin’ mushrooms”. 14

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2017

I guess Charlie and Kate aren’t your typical teachers. “I think people are hungry for connecting with nature, and for some reason I think in today’s world it’s hard to know how to do it, or for people to give themselves permission to do it. But it’s so simple, and I think our camps are a real go-to,” says Kate. “Something that I love so much about our camps is that I know these kids are deeply connecting with nature, connecting with themselves, and connecting with each other. And I know that when they’re touched in their heart, then they can understand what it’s like to see a night of clear stars, and to hear the bird song in the morning. I just know that part of nature is living within them.” After returning to the outdoor classroom from where our day had once begun, we spread our newly discovered bounty across a blanket by the fire, feasted on fungus, and shared a batch of tea. The group of more familiar strangers joined hands, formed a circle around our fire and our finds, and offered our thanks unto the world. BRL

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2017

I’m the kind of runner who saves up her miles for the race. Ever since I sprained my ankle during a training run somewhere near the Blue Ridge Parkway, I vowed never to conventionally train for a race again. I am only a half-quitter, you see. If I’m going down, I’m going down in a blaze of glory, on my bloody way to the finish line. The Ultra Race of Champions (that has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?) was holding a trail race in my backyard and I would have felt like a turd if I let that opportunity pass up. Racers would start and finish at Skylark Farm, which if you’re familiar with the area, is the site of a bucolic Christmas tree farm on the sunrise side of the Parkway. Runners had three distances from which to choose: 100k, 50k, and 25k. Register button, create account, add to cart. So that’s how you sign up for a race. Part one of running one is showing up. Packet picket up opened up on a Friday morning and this is when you get your bib number and start reevaluating your sanity. The weather guessers were predicting rainy conditions on race day. The ride up to Skylark Friday was dense and foggy; I barely missed the lone turkey hen pacing down the shoulder (I took this as an omen). Number 344. A handshake from race director Dr. Francesca Conte, who along with J. Russell Gill III, operate Bad to the Bone Sports, a company that has been organizing running

events since 2001. To the right of the packet pickup table was a guy in a flat billed hat setting up his company’s line of compression gear. I have an IT Band issue that always flares up around mile 3. He handed me a quad compression sleeve from OS1st. Instant friends, early Mother’s Day gift. As the sun rose on Saturday, I headed out to feed the chickens, the hogs and the dogs. I was glad to see that it wasn’t raining though I could still hear our creek rushing from all of the rain we’ve had. By 8 AM, our running group of five rendezvoused at the parking lot of Devils Backbone, before merging into two vehicles to drive up the mountain to Skylark. Every one of these women, except myself, are teachers. Students, know this: Not only does your teacher have eyes in the back of her head, her legs move faster and longer than your confiscated fidget spinner. Apparently to keep us on our toes, the 9 AM race start occurred 5 minutes early. Whatever advantage I thought I had gained from being at the start line with Wintergreen-based ultra marathoner Bob Clouston, disappeared when BRL photographer and local teacher Hayley Osborne pranced up like a gazelle. And then she was gone. That’s Hayley. Next was Laura Long Legs and I told her she needed to go catch Hayley. Boing, boing, and there she went! No longer the victims of an premature start, Wendy and Carrie caught up and we stuck together for quite a while. continued on page 18

“After these rocks,” Wendy said, “we’ve got some happy running for about 6 miles.” Wendy knows these trails pretty well and I was sure glad she told me we had some “happy stretches” coming up. It was around this time that I heard some shuffling from behind and saw a man with poles skipping down the rocky trail. We’ll call him Goat Man. “I love these technical downhills,” he said. “Once a big guy like me gets going, I can’t stop!” Freak. He loves the technical downhills. This is the kind of terrain that sprained my ankle a few years back. We caught back up with him at White Rock Falls, which because of the rain, meant we’d be knee deep in a mountain stream. I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture of Goat Man crossing the falls. Trail races get lonely and it wasn’t long before I had lost sight of Wendy and Carrie. I finally reached an aid station (Mountain Dew and M&Ms are how I roll) and hollered at her. At this

Slow and steady – like the red spotted salamander crossing the Blue Ridge Parkway – is how some of us ran the UROC at Skylark Farm. The important thing is crossing the finish line. Pictured left to right: Wendy Dalton, Carrie Bryant and Yvette Stafford of Roseland; Laura Wolf of Afton, and Hayley Osborne of Faber. They all raced the 25k, as did Bob Clouston of Wintergreen, who put down his pizza to take this photo.

point, I think we had less than 8 miles or so to go. But our legs protested. “My hamstrings feel like rubber bands,” she said. Thankfully, my OS1st compression sleeve was keeping my right IT band happy but I may have inadvertently created some anatomical asymmetry and now my left leg was talking to me. So I tried to run on the grass along the parkway as much as we could. A runner who was running the 50k alerted us to the orange lizard crossing the road. Photo opportunity! As the entrance to Skylark came into view, we knew we were in the home stretch. The grey clouds finally began to part and reveal the incredible Blue Ridge Mountain panorama the online race description bragged about. A gravel farm road, a few barns, a tucked away pond. If this is what heaven looks like, book me a room. Finish line cheers, a medal around your neck, two slices of cheese pizza, and sweaty teacher friends who kick some serious trail tail. BRL

Millennials, Boomers and Beyond Generational trends in home buying and selling

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

In today’s real estate climate, purchasers have many options and sellers have a great deal of competition. Hence, it is essential to have a carefully crafted plan of execution for buying and selling. Diving deeper into market statistics can help buyers, sellers, and agents navigate the path to SOLD. Since 2013 the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has published a Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report. Here are some insights from the 2017 report. Note that ages reflect the actual age of participants at the time of data collection. Gen Y/Millennials (born 19801998, age 36 and younger): 34% of recent home buyers and the largest buying population with a median buyer age of 31; 66% were firsttime home buyers; 49% have kids under the age of 18; 66% are married couples; 13% are unmarried couples which is the largest share of all

generations; the most likely population to consider buying a home in foreclosure; 98% financed their home purchase; 46% have student loan debt; expect to stay in their home for 10 years; they actually stayed in their homes for 6 years before selling. Gen X (born 1965-1979, age 37 to 51): 28% of recent home buyers and accounting for the most diverse population of buyers of all generations; 21% identified as Hispanic/ Latino, black/African American, or Asian/Pacific Islander; they are in their peak earning years and thus their incomes are the highest of all generations; they have the highest median priced homes and also buy the largest homes; purchase location is driven by convenience to job and school districts; 29% of sellers making up the largest selling population with a median age of 44; tend to trade up to a larger and more expensive home; 14% had a distressed sale

in the past; 21% wanted to sell earlier but home was under water.

spend less on a home than the one they sold.

Younger Boomers (born 19551964, age 52 to 61): 16% of recent home buyers; As the sandwich generation, 20% bought a multi-generational home to accommodate children over 18 or aging parent; they expect to be in their home for the longest at a median of 20 years; when buying they tend to stay at a similar price and size to the home they sold.

Silent Generation (born 19251945, age 71 to 91): Represents the smallest group of buyers at 8%; Since most have retired or scaled back work demands, they have the lowest median household income; 23% buy to be closer to friends or family; 24% purchased senior related housing; they tend to buy the newest homes; 58% financed their home; they are likely to spend less on a home than the one they previously sold.

Older Boomers (born 1946-1954, age 62 to 70): 14% of home buyers; 17% purchased senior-related housing; 19% buy due to retirement; purchase decision driven by retirement, downsizing, or desire to be closer to family and friends; they typically move the longest distance and are the least likely to compromise on home purchase; 68% finance their home; 21% of sellers and thus the second largest selling population; likely to

“Everyone has a story.” says Giancarlo Gnali and his starts when he was eight-years-old in Italy. “My grandfather took care of these fields where they cut the grass with a sickle, and there was a fig tree. That’s where I created my very first composition, under this big old fig tree.” “I made a hazelnut caramel stick in the woods. To this day I’m in awe, where did that come from? I borrowed my grandmother’s copper pot and went to the woods. I built a fire. I put the pot on the fire circled by rocks. I melted the butter and added the sugar and made a caramel. I had picked some hazelnuts. I cracked them on a stone and threw them in the pot and stirred it up. I had a wooden board and some wax paper. I poured the caramel onto it and rolled it up. I sold pieces to my friends for five cents. Eight years old?” “Then there was a gap.” interjects Gian’s wife of 40 years, Jane, laughingly. Jane tends to customers ribboning jewel boxes of pastries and chocolates, taking custom orders and keeping the retail space.

“I came to the US in 1971 when I was 15-years-old to go to high school in Lynchburg where my uncle lived.” Emil Waldis was a Swiss pastry chef running a gourmet store in a shopping center. “It was unheard of, but it was one way to introduce what you could get in New York.” His small counter and few tables evolved into a fine dining establishment. So Giancarlo came to Virginia to be the apprentice. “The only one from the family in the old country. I wanted to learn English, that was my goal, but I learned more than that. In retrospect I was destined to do this work.” The magic show unfolds as Liszt plays in the background. “All the years I worked in kitchens I was deprived of music and natural light. When Jane and I started this business nineteen years ago I said, ‘We’re going to have the radio all of the time. And watch nature, have natural light.’ I need it to do this.” Giancarlo has pulled a pristine little cake from nowhere. “This is a birthday cake.” Giancarlo says wielding a tiny homemade pastry tube filled with dark chocolate ganache. The four of us in the small bakery collectively hold our breath as the scrolling greeting is expertly applied to the ivory buttercream frosting. The only sound is the click of Kate’s camera lens and the incredibly appropriate symphony. Giancarlo stands straight and says to Kate, “Just like you I have to balance. You breathe in, you breathe out. You hold your stomach muscles.” The next embellishment to this cake is in hand.

Upon direction Kate’s daughter, nine-year-old Fiona holds out a petite finger. Giancarlo squirts a drop of bright yellow passion fruit ganache on it. Finger to tongue, then the sublime countenance of one who has tasted perfection. “Awesome!” Fi exhales. She has not taken her eyes off of the maestro since we arrived. To delineate the portions of some cakes Giancarlo creates sheets of chocolate adorned with refined images and cut into squares. He leafs through an album of sheets and settles on yellow musical notes. “I am told from a musician’s perspective this is actually Mozart. I can’t read music, but I’ll go with it.” He sets eight equidistant pieces on the side of the cake. What’s inside is also exquisite. Three layers of vanilla butter cake, fresh raspberries, seedless raspberry jam and white chocolate Bavarian. Pointing out a recipe tacked to the wall Giancarlo shows a method of making puff pastry using a tea-towel for demonstration. “81 layers for puff, 132 for croissants. pastry chef Ignio Massari. He is from my hometown of Brescia.” “Yes, okay I bake, that is my profession. I don’t know why . . .” Giancarlo trails off. “In Europe I feel that you are given more respect to this profession. A good pastry chef is very well respected in the community. I’m not demeaning cupcakes or doughnuts. We don’t do that here. Why? Because everyone else is doing it.” I mutter to Kate that this hour will not fit in an article it should be a book. She emphatically agrees glancing at her camera then to Fiona still agog over the cherry panna cotta. Giancarlo smiles, “That would be a goal of mine. I say, ‘How is that going to come about?’ I don’t know, but maybe possibly someday.” “Here is a leftover.” says Giancarlo holding a plate of sweets that still look delicious. “So what will end up happening with these? They will go into this bag where I put scraps and they will go to the chicken farm. The next time I get eggs I get the benefit back.” Picture hens pecking apricot tart with marzipan. BRL

BLUE MOUNTAIN

Blue Mountain Brewery rolls out updated logos and packaging.

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2017

REBOOT

As a brewery’s beers evolve, so does its branding. It’s been nearly a decade since Blue Mountain Brewery founder Taylor Smack was trying to come up with a logo for a hobby that was turning into a business. “It was developed over a few beers at South Street Brewery by a graphic artist from Cville Weekly named Liann,” said Taylor. “Of course, having been over ten years ago, all I can remember is the general excitement, the thrill of jumping further into an adventure.” And it’s been quite the adventure. Growing pains came quickly as the brewery struggled to meet its newfound popularity and expand its business without losing its soul. Once Blue Mountain dove into the bottling game, it rebranded again with the help of Charlottesville-based artist Mike Fitts. “It has pretty much carried through all our packaging and merchandise over the next 9+ years with minor tweaks,” Taylor explained. And over those years, the craft beer market has gotten more crowded as beermakers compete for limited shelf space (getting on those shelves is a whole other battle). “Dozens of great new local breweries, powerful out-of-state regional breweries, and of course beers from breweries that are owned by the international mega-brewing forces who wield a frightening amount of influence and control on what ‘choices’ consumers even get to choose from,” Taylor added.

One of Blue Mountain’s earlier logos remains on a tank behind the Afton brewery. Designed by Mike Fitts, the logo had a long run of nearly a decade.

Annie Baggett, of Sunshine Lavender Farm in NC, will teach us planting, growing, landscaping, harvesting and using Lavender. Lunch will be provided and we will have lavender products for sale.

Which is why in a business built on taste buds, having a pretty face still matters. “So you do your best to make sure the beer in the bottle or can is worth coming back for, and try to execute a package that absolutely nails your identity and helps tell your story.” It’s a story with many chapters. From youthful start-up, to award-winning brewery that built a bottling facility – the in Blue Mountain Barrel House in Arrington – to the acquisition of South Street Brewery in Charlottesville, which required a brand reboot of its own. “Our graphic team for that project – Watermark Design – did fantastic work ... That experience was just that: more experience. We got better at knowing what we want and how to communicate that with an artist.” Enter, The BrandIt, a boutique design firm based in Asheville, North Carolina. Matt Ebbing is the company’s Associate Creative Director. “We helped Blue Mountain reposition their branding efforts to focus on reconnecting craft brewing (and craft customers) back to the landscape – back to farming ingredients, back to relaxing in the countryside, and back to the adventure on the mountains.”

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2017

By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

Johnny Bench A bench in the landscape is perhaps one of the more welcoming hardscapes to choose – offering an opportunity to not just walk through the design, but to soak all the intricate details like a dry sponge. The options are numerous regarding size, shape and material, while the location is a bit more complicated. No, for most average landscapes, the location is not pondered longer than a dinner menu and the design accompanying it likewise. I find it rare that a bench can be just plopped down in a random spot and add interest and value to the landscape. More often than not, it takes a careful eye to move throughout the design and find a location that dovetails nicely with the associated space and plantings and ultimately offer a resting atmosphere. As with all hardscapes, the bench must be creatively positioned in a location that attracts the eye and rewards the senses when it is occupied. Here are some things to think about. Benches work well in shade gardens. The most obvious reason is the canopy offers a relaxing retreat from the sun and therefore serves as an oasis for a good book, some surfing or just a chat with a friend. This does not mean that full sun exposures are off limits, it’s just that comfort, vision and duration can be somewhat limited since our orbital rotation can be a bit harsh when weather permits an opportunity to sit a while. Of all the locations in your design, a seating area should always involve landscape material that offers fine detail, like the delicate fronds of a fern or the intricate petals of a coneflower, since rest allows the eye to wander and focus. The material used for a bench is also something to ponder. Once you know the location, the composition of the bench should be a reflection of the area. Stone benches work best with

deeper and taller backdrops while wooden benches (with backs) have the ability to stand better with limited or little associated landscape considerations. Either way, traffic flow, proximity to walks and structures, viewing gardens, fragrant plants and audible hardscapes (i.e. fountains) should be paramount in the ultimate location of a bench. Also, never underestimate the ability of a bench to completely remove an open eyesore (propane tank, electric box, etc.) from your landscape – “The best way to erase a manmade object is to introduce another …” For either sun or shade, the setting could be at the end of a serpentine path of bluestone pavers, a cul-de-sac of grass at the end of the landscape or close to a fountain. Associated with a shade garden could be an understory tree or trees (Kousa dogwood, Japanese snowbell, etc.) with a mass of ferns under their canopy flanked by a half circle of Vardar Valley boxwood (or equivalent shapes evergreen shrubs). A sun garden can be as simple as a couple of evergreens framing the bench along with a small arbor covered in Mandevilla over the seating area. The addition of spring and summer color is always a bonus – try Little Lime, Annabelle or Oakleaf hydrangea. Summer, long lived annuals like New Guinea impatiens, caladiums, lantana, petunias, etc. add color from May to frost. Fragrant flowers, like daphne and viburnum, located up to 30 feet from the bench will fill the air with a sweet aroma thus bringing another sense into play. In deeper mountain/buffer settings, opt for the wooden bench with back and reduce your plant listing greatly. Large masses of ferns around a large boulder in the canopy of a large oak or shagbark hickory could easily suffice. Be sure that the location is in a moderately visible area to the side of the house where the bench can draw the eye to the area.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, What is the latest on cholesterol and high cholesterol treatment? Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is found in all the cells of the body. It is important for brain, skin, and other organ function. But, too much of the bad kind, the low density lipoproteins (LDL), is associated with blood vessel disease like heart attacks and strokes. This is why cholesterol gets so much attention in the press and at your doctor’s office. In many cases the level of the cholesterol depends on a people’s lifestyle, especially the foods they choose to eat. However, heredity also plays an important role in cholesterol—so be sure to pick your parents well! Medicine’s current thinking about what levels of cholesterol are dangerous is a fairly holistic one, as we look at the cholesterol numbers alongside of the other major risk factors for vascular disease (ie most importantly heart attacks and strokes). These other risk factors include smoking status, age, gender, blood pressure, and sugar levels. Using these risk factors and a person’s cholesterol numbers, doctors can come up with a risk profile for a

Discover Why patient. Plugging numbers into a calculator, like the one found at cvriskcalculator.com which anyone can access on the web, produces a prediction—a percentage change of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. Once a person has looked at his or her cholesterol and then has done the calculations to have the 10 year risk number, the question is what to do if the risk is high. Well, the safest and best thing to do is certainly to work on non-medical ways of lowering cholesterol and lowering vascular disease risk. If a person smokes, stopping that is probably more important than anything else he or she can do for health. Losing weight, cutting out processed foods and foods high in cholesterol can help. Increasing exercise is important as well. If all those things are done and a person’s risk is still high, it is probably worth discussing this with a doctor to see if any of the available cholesterol medicines may be of benefit. Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. This column is provided as a service to readers of Blue Ridge Life Magazine and it does not necessarily reflect the views of the publishers of this magazine.
