thepublishers Itching to buy a playground set? Just rent a box truck that comes with a loading ramp. On the first day of our move to “the new old house” as Peyton puts it, it’s a miracle she and her brother didn’t get pinned in between a blanket chest and a mattress. Up and down they ran on that thing, as four of us loaded ten years worth of boxed-up memories and dissassembled furniture. We were worried the kids would miss their old home, but the moving party held their fascination. If you neatly pile folded blankets and set them out of the way, small children will dive into them like a pile of autumn leaves. “Weeeeee ... BAM!” Peyton would squeal. “It’s a snow fort!” Adam would say as he dove in head first. We voided more warranties that week than we ever had. But for a little less house and a little more land on the Patrick Henry side of Route 151, it was worth it. We had been itching to do it for a while. For weeks, as we gathered packing supplies at the hardware store, the kids would make sure they visited the ceiling fan aisle on the way out. “This is my planet fan!” Adam would

exclaim. “And this is my baseball fan,” Peyton would say, only to change her mind the next week and choose the pink fan with the “pretty flowers on it.” “You and daddy need to have the clock fan,” Adam said, pointing to a special order unit I had zero interest seeing hang in our bedroom. That’s when you smile and cock both brows. Fastforwarding to our first night, we had budgeted time for a few meltdowns as the kids adjusted to their new space. That never happened and they actually slept in a little. Life is full of itches worth scratching. Even if it’s the posion ivy rash that woke you up in the new old house the other night. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Abundance… Alsace and Austria Sometimes all we want is to become kids again. Enter summertime and the full, saturated, ripe, even overripe, abundance it brings with it. Think fresh watermelon and tomatoes, but also weeds in the garden and the neighbor standing on your front porch with wagonloads of zucchini. After a quick trip to the Loire’s gentle valleys and vineyards, I returned to a world painted richly in deep hues of green. Walking past the tangled twirls of trumpet vine, wisteria, akebia and jasmine, I felt I’d left a pristine spring to return to dense Amazonian vegetation. But that is after all what summer’s all about: lushness and lusciousness, and maybe a touch of laziness too. Summer means seasonal foods in abundance, like berries, cucumbers, tomatoes and corn, all fresh from the garden and ripe for the picking, the plucking, the shucking. It’s about nostalgia and the childhoods we remember. For me this was running outside after a summer thunderstorm as the steam rose from the pavement, or homemade grape juice popsicles dripping

down my chin. Alas, slurping down grape juice popsicles has been traded in for slurping down more adult beverages, but not to fear, there are plenty of wines to evoke the simple joys we once knew as school ended and we could throw off our shoes for good. The Alsatian whites are an erudite bunch, and perhaps not everyone’s idea of summertime quaffing. But maybe they add that small note of poise to the usual suspects, Pinot Grigio and cheap rosé. High both in fruit and acidity, the best examples can age for decades, yet few consumers stock Alsatian wines in their cellars. And because of their fruit and acidity, Alsatian wines make some of the best in food pairing. I’ll also venture that here are some of the highest quality whites in the world, and for less than half the price of white Burgundy. Domaine Jean Siegler, Riesling Grand Cru Mandelberg, 2010 – In Alsace there are 51 specifically designated Grand Cru vineyards located at altitudes between 200 and 300 meters, often with south-facing slopes for maximum exposure and ripeness. All Grand Cru wines must come from a

lieu-dit (a named vineyard) although, not to confuse an already confusing topic, many lieu-dits are not Grand Cru, but are now more famous than their appellations. While it s a beloved darling of sommeliers and wine geeks, Riesling has had a bad rap in American with too many people thinking it only comes in cloyingly sweet versions. Considered the King of Grapes in Alsace, Riesling is one of the greatest wines for pairing with meals: coq au vin, sausage, spicy salads, choucroute, shellfish, quiche and most cheese. Delicate white flower notes combined with minerals and a concentrated, spicy richness of baked pears. And the best part, a mere $24 for Grand Cru. Paul Direder Grüner Veltliner, 2013 – Zipping southwest, we arrive in the Wagram area of Austria just west of Vienna. The Grüner Veltliner grape, heralded as the best grape to pair with artichoke and asparagus, is another great food wine although Paul Direder’s Grüner makes an equally refreshing quaffing wine on hot summer days. Dry with thirst-quenching lemon curd notes, layered with spice. One-liter bottles, $12!

POURING After bonding over beer in college, Daniel Potter and Tim Edmond ditched their day jobs and began making hard cider.

POTTER’S

When Tim Edmond and Dan Potter first met each other at Princeton, their relationship – as many college relationships do – relied heavily on beer… but not in the way you might think. They were brewing their own beer by the time they graduated in 2007. They enjoyed their hobby so much, that when they both moved to North Carolina (one in Durham and one in Charlotte), they would meet almost every weekend to continue brewing and dream about a day when they could spend the majority of their time brewing (in North Carolina, Dan was an engineer and Tim worked in finance). When Dan finally kicked his 9-5 habit in 2009, he didn’t go straight to brewing, but did end up in a pretty cool place: Tuckahoe Plantation in Richmond, where he got his hands dirty with a little bit of everything, including planting hops. The dream was becoming a reality. “We didn’t like the idea that hops was sourced from the Pacific Northwest and barley came from overseas,” said Tim, who had moved to DC by that time. “So we looked into the idea of a farmhouse brewery.” Everything was going great until Dan’s entire hops crop was destroyed in the historic James River flood of 2009. So later that year, Dan started experimenting with something that was in much greater supply in central Virginia: apples. “We’d kind of dismissed the cider category of drinks, but we’d never had a good cider,” said Tim, who drove from DC to Richmond all year long so he and Dan could brew 310 5-gallon test batches of cider, which he said was “just an exceptional amount of work,” but totally worth it in the end. Potter’s Craft Cider was born about four years ago. continued on page 12

Tim left his DC job in 2011 and Potter’s Craft Cider is now a full time (and then some) gig for both he and Dan. At a former horse boarding farm in Free Union, the duo brews all of their cider using only fresh pressed local apples and yeast (no extra sugar or water), and continues to experiment on new tastes. “This is our fourth commercial year and we’re really honing our technique and borrowing a lot from the wine and beer communities,” said Tim. They’re experimenting with a cider that runs through hops, for example, to get all of the aromatics but none of the bitterness that hoppy beers can have. And their newest release is an Oak Barrel Reserve, a cider aged in oak brandy barrels.

“What we’re doing is really cool and interesting, but if I take my own perception of what cider was even five years ago, most people think certain things about cider,” said Tim. But as of right now, Potter’s Craft Cider has no retail presence. They love selling to grocery stores like Whole Foods and local bars and restaurants, but are worried they are missing out on the face-to-face opportunity to explain that cider doesn’t have to be sugary sweet. “When you have a tasting room, you have that captive audience to say ‘That’s not how it has to be.’ This is how it’s made the traditional way and what it tastes like; it has character and it’s not loaded with sugar.” continued on page 14

But since Potter’s Craft Cider is a two-man outfit with a lot of DIY (Dan was an engineer, remember), there’s no $750,000 mega tasting room on a beautiful property in the works. “We just don’t have that kind of capital,” said Tim. “It’s very much a bootstrap operation for us.” But he and Dan have come up with something even better: They bought a 1965 30-foot Airstream and are gutting it down to the frame and rebuilding it with a 15-foot bar as a mobile tasting room. “Basically the idea is that we’ll be able to set up semi-permanently,” said Tim, who tossed around the ideas of festivals, weddings, and even camping out near Greenwood Gourmet on weekends. “We’re really excited to get in front of people and showing our enthusiasm and our passion for cider.” They currently have a few varieties of Potter’s Craft Cider on draught in some local bars and sell the rest in champagne-style bottles throughout Central Virginia. And they just signed with a distributor to get bottles into Northern Virginia and D.C., but home will always be where the heart is… or in this case, where the apples are. “What we really love about cider is that it’s grown right here,” said Tim, who added that they just planted a baby orchard. “Just coming here I knew this is beautiful, this is where I want to build a community and live.” BRL

Earl Hamner greets Jimmy Fortune Jr. and Jimmy senior at Schuyler Baptist Church. Fortune senior sang hymns and other songs for a church service, filmed for the documentary Earl Hamner Storyteller.

STORYTELLER

The boy from Schuyler who grew up to create The Waltons, is the subject of a new documentary.

Blue Ridge LIFE

JULY 2014

If you ask Earl Hamner, now approaching his 91st birthday, what he wants his legacy to be, he says “not what a nice guy I am,” though he is one of the nicest persons one could ever hope to meet. “I’d prefer comments on the social value” of his writings and the television programs he produced, he says. Hamner’s life and his contributions to popular culture are the focus of a video, “Earl Hamner Storyteller,” now under production. There is little doubt that his most famous achievement is “The Waltons,” the TV series based on his upbringing in Nelson County’s Schuyler community that ran for nine years from 1972 to 1981. The series was preceded by “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” which was broadcast in December, 1971, and the 1963 movie “Spencer’s Mountain,” based on his novel of the same name. And the social value of that work? That would require an extended essay – maybe even a book. But it can be summed up by the words “family values.” As former President George H.W. Bush said to the Republican National Convention in 1992 of his policies, “We’re going to keep trying to strengthen the American family. To make them more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons.” Hamner’s upbringing in Schuyler provided the basis for the setting and many of the storylines of “The Waltons,” which ran for ten years as a series and sparked several TV specials after that run. His family and the community provided much of the inspiration for the characters, their values, and the human-interest stories of his books, movies, and television series. When Ray Castro of ESO Productions based in Paterson, New Jersey, and co-producer Tim McAbee of First Class Productions in Sevierville, Tennessee, approached him with the idea of a video biography, Hamner’s response was positive.

“At 91, to have such a tribute brought to your attention…well, writers usually are kept in the background. I’ve been lucky enough to function in several areas, drama, soap opera, biographies.” Indeed, Hamner’s credits as the author of a number of books also extends to three screenplays, “Spencer’s Mountain,” “Palm Spring Weekend,” and “Charlotte’s Web,” and at least 15 teleplays, eight of them episodes of “The Twilight Zone,” a series that ranks with “The Waltons” for its lasting popularity and impact on television history. He also produced the long running series “Falcon Crest,” as well as “Apple’s Way” and “Boone.” A portion of “Earl Hamner Storyteller” was shot in Schuyler in April. “It was exciting to film in Schuyler,” Hamner says, not only for its sentimental value but to discover Schuyler is coming alive again.” The production crew filmed Hamner at the soapstone quarry, where his father and grandfather had worked. “Just to be in the same building where my grandfather polished stone and my uncle, a carpenter, had boxed up the stone for shipping, well, it was a very personal trip back.” He also visited the family graveyard and drove on the road along the Rockfish River, “the most beautiful in the world.” Other scenes were shot in the old Schuyler Hospital, now a residence, and the old Schuyler School, now a community center and home to “The Waltons Mountain Museum.” It was a busy three-day schedule that left Hamner wishing he had had more time. “I wanted to visit the old spring box and the creek where I was baptized, but we didn’t get there.”

Earl Hamner, left, chats with Lisa, Aiden and Cameron Stewart in Schuyler during filming of documentary on Hamner’s life. Cameron is an aspiring young author and was seeking Earl’s advice.

He did, however, spend time in Schuyler Baptist Church, where the production crew filmed a church service that featured Nelson’s other nationally famous person, Jimmy Fortune, singing old hymns accompanied by member of both Hamner’s and Fortune’s family. The experience in Schuyler brought back many memories and a sense of wonder of where he is today and how where he came from. “So many people helped me,” he says. When he received a scholarship to attend the University of Richmond, he would not have been able to attend had it not been for his father’s oldest sister giving him a place to live. “That was a gesture of great meaning to me.” He also remembers an old army buddy whom he met on a troop train in France following the invasion of Normandy in 1945. “He introduced me to authors and music I had never heard of. He took me to a record story to hear Beethoven. I was a naïve kid from the backwoods, he was from Philadelphia. He had a tremendous influence on my life.” He mentions Van Woodward, who gave him his first job at NBC radio and taught him how to deal with a major network, and Ray Bradbury, the noted science fiction author, who told him to call Rod Serling, who hired him for “The Twilight Zone.” Hamner remains a greatly respected father-figure and friend to the cast of “The Waltons.” They were together for the memorial service for Ralph Waite, who played the role of John Walton, the father of the Walton family, and passed away in February. “He came to ‘The Waltons’ an alcoholic and just an actor, and because of the integrity of the role of John Walton he gave up booze and changed his life. He integrated his career into his personal destiny and became a most sincere and effective actor,” Hamner says. Waite often told interviewers “The Waltons” had a tremendously positive impact on his life. “It was very moving,” Hamner says of the memorial service for Waite. “Each of us had a different relationship with Ralph. He was a symbolic father to the young people in the cast. Michael (Learned) said he was her spiritual husband. They were surrogate parents to those kids and they both felt obliged to continue that after the show ended. TV casts often say they felt like a family, but in our case is was certainly true.” He also professed awe for Richard Thomas, who played John-boy, the oldest son of the tv family. “He did a better job of playing me than I did being me.” But when you ask Hamner what he wants his legacy to be decades from now, he brings it back to family. “First, that I was a good husband, a good father, a good writer, a good Virginian, a good American, and a good son.” He is certainly all of those. Understanding Modular Home Construction

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Is this is a modular house?    When I show a modular home, I inevitably hear someone ask that question and typically with a less than happy or satisfied tone. Why is this? Perception; many people confuse a modular home with a manufactured home. They are not the same! In fact, if more prospective home owners understood the advantages of a modular home, even over a traditional “stick-built” or “site-built” home, they would probably be asking that question in a much more delighted tone. Here are some modular home construction facts that will have you asking - Is this a modular house?   Modular ≠ Manufactured; modular homes are built in sections, called modules, in a factory assembly line. Once constructed the sections are transported to the building site on truck beds and then joined together on a foundation by local contractors.

Once assembled, the modular typically cannot be distinguished from a stick-built/site-built home. A modular home should not be confused with a manufactured or mobile home, also known as a trailer, singlewide, or doublewide, which is built on a steel frame and transported to the building site on its own wheels. Since manufactured homes may not even be placed on permanent foundations, they are often taxed as personal property because they can be wheeled off of the premises. Quality standards and materials differ as well; hence, manufactured homes tend to depreciate instead of appreciate in value. Quality; modular homes are often built with 20-30% more materials than even a traditional stick-built/ site-built home, so that they can withstand transportation from the factory to the building site. The modular factory system combines engineering know-how and factory production methods to design and build more ef-

ficiently with greater quality control, which can result in a better product. Quality factors include: construction in a climate controlled facility with materials protected from the elements; standards that meet or exceed local and state building codes; rigorous workforce and quality control systems; superior energy efficiency. Efficiencies; without sacrificing on quality, modular homes can be constructed for less due to: bulk material purchases (lumber and building materials are purchased in large quantities and thus receive volume discounts), controlled environment (building indoors avoids inclement weather disruptions and results in greater labor efficiencies), less material waste (warehouses are easier to secure than job sites and result in less vandalism and theft), manufacturing technology and quality control (precision equipment, efficient material handling, and a closely supervised workforce, result in more accurate

Considering building?

construction with fewer mistakes). Options; in the past, modular homes have been considered a one-size fits all approach allowing minimal construction designs and options. Modular homes now come in all shapes, sizes, and level of customization from the small ranchers to McMansions. Financing; While obtaining a loan for a manufactured home can be challenging, lenders and banking institutions do NOT differentiate a modular home from a traditional stick-built or site-built home. Should you consider building or purchasing a modular home, smile and proceed with an air of educated confidence! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Every Thurs. dinner: 6:30 PM

There are some stories that simply must be told, and Kay Pfaltz (yes, our very own Basic Necessities columnist) said her first, Lauren’s Story: An American Dog in Paris was one of them. “I wanted to write about unconditional love and what it really means,” said Kay about the story of her beagle, Lauren and their adventures in Paris. “I wrote Lauren’s Story in 1998 and back then there were very few dog books ... not the craze there is now. I feel good to have been one of the first of that craze, but at the time, I felt I was putting myself out there to be viewed as a bit of a kook ... loving “a beagle” to such an extent.” But after hearing from readers that of course they, too, felt immense love for their furry friends, Kay has been inspired to write a number of other dog stories, including two recent releases, Flash’s Song: How One Small Dog Turned Into One Big Miracle and Ricochet: Riding a Wave of Hope with the Dog Who Inspires Millions. Ricochet was Kay’s foray into ghostwriting after Ricochet’s owner approached Kay and asked her to write the surfing dog’s story. “I felt honored they wanted me. In some ways it was freeing, but in other ways it was hard,” said Kay of ghostwriting, where she is considered the writer, but not the author (that role goes to Judy Fridono). “I would have written things differently. But my job was just to write what was in the author’s heart and mind as best I could.” While Ricochet’s story (the story of the only dog in the world who surfs with special needs children) is Judy’s, Kay’s newest story is that of Flash, the miniature dachshund who loved to sing and the “miracle” that happened to them. “Flash’s Song and Ricochet are similar stories about daring to go the unconventional route when others are directing you otherwise,” said Kay. “They’re about committing to what you know to be true in your heart, even as doctor’s and professionals tell you otherwise. They’re about following your truth and the miraculous things that happen when you do commit to that path.” BRL – JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS

Dwight Wood, owner of North Mountain Outfitter pauses for a moment while putting away tack after leading a trail ride. At right is his horse, Casper.

32

Blue Ridge LIFE

JULY 2014

Dwight Wood got his first horse when he was 7 years old so and the ranch that he owns and operates has been in his family for about 70 years.

“And anyone that’s been around horses will find they will become very part of you,” said Dwight. “If you allow them.” And allow them, he has. Today, Dwight runs his family ranch, North Mountain Outfitter, as it’s always been: a safe and happy place for horses, but with a side of adventure. “Most of the people that come here are coming from the city world,” he explained of his top trail ride clientele. “From metropolitan areas where they’re looking for the opportunity to get in the country and do something they can’t normally do on a daily basis. When people come here, they feel like they’re a part of the life. We try to instill in people a way of life that we live every day, but are able to have the opportunity to share with other people.” Most people who come to North Mountain Outfitter (www.northmtnoutfitter.com) don’t have their own horses and they don’t even have to bring their own gear. In fact, experience is not required, Dwight just asks that this riders enjoy the outdoors, like animals (especially horses), and be able to relax. “Once you do that,” he said, “you can find yourself melting in and becoming a part of our world that we live every day.” North Mountain has a number of trails on its property, but also has a special use permit in the George Washington National Park for a combined 50 miles of mountain trails. From half day (3 hour) trail rides to week-long (or longer!) stays in their 4,000 square foot bunkhouse, and a brand-new 5,000 square foot wedding venue, North Mountain has a little bit of everything for everyone. But it’s important to Dwight that the horses are as happy as the people. continued on page 34

“We take time with the people and the horses,” he said. “The horses here at the ranch are turned out; we feel that gives the horse an opportunity to be a horse. Horses are social animals and they love being free. It gives them the opportunity to be free and run and I feel like that makes a big difference as to whether the horse is having a good time in life and I feel like that’s important. Sometimes they get a little dirty, but they are doing what they have been put on this earth to do.” Debbie and Bob Kozura of Charlottesville can definitely see a difference in North Mountain horses and trail rides. Debbie grew up with horses and she and her husband go on at least one trail ride a year, but enjoyed themselves most on their most recent one: a half-day trail ride with Dwight. “We found this ride to be the best we’ve ever gone on,

34

actually,” said Debbie, who rode Three Socks that day. “The horses were beautiful. We were well matched to our horses, too, and that’s always important. It was just very relaxing and soothing.” The Kozuras found North Mountain on Living Social, but Dwight says one of the best ways he’s found to advertise is by creating an experience that his visitors want to share with others, which really doesn’t seem to be a problem as his trail rides (about $65 for a half day or $150 for a full day ride, each with lunch included) are some of the best the area has to offer. “We’re already planning a fall trip to see the leaves change,” added Bob, who rode Casper. “We would highly recommend this. It’s a beautiful setting; rustic, but nice. For us, it was the total package.” BRL

Craig Nargi is not trained as a farmhand, but most days you’ll find him cleaning stalls, maintaining horses, picking blackberries, or somewhere else up to his elbows in dirt on Hermitage Hill Farm, his horse farm and wedding venue in Waynesboro. “I need to back way up: I was working at Wintergreen and I met a girl,” said Craig, who is an executive chef by trade. And that girl, now his wife, Nikki, was his inspiration for Hermitage Hill. Moving between resorts and hotels was exciting, but tiring so he decided to start his own restaurant, complete with a catering side business. “We were catering from the Outer Banks up to D.C. and doing everything from barbecues to weddings,” he said. “But my daughter was 6 years old and I had spent virtually no time with her and my son was about to be born and I just woke up one day and said, ‘I’m not doing this anymore.’ So we started looking for a farm.” He said that while his wife is the “horse person,” the more he looked at it, the more it made sense. He didn’t want to jump into a horse farm without making it a viable business, so he combined his wife’s love of horses with his chef and resort experience and, voila! “One side compliments the other,” he said. “You see people who want to see horses and visit the farm, but they don’t have to get dirty to see it.”

A sure pick for weddings at a time when rustic is in, brides can have horses in their wedding pictures (or even as wedding guests!) without sacrificing the air conditioned bridal suite or high heels - you’re walking on hard surfaces everywhere at Hermitage Hill. “The reception room has electricity for bands, full air conditioning, commercial restrooms,” listed Craig. “But it also has full tinted glass windows so you don’t have to give up the views.” Now super into the agritourism with a lot of support from both local and state politicians, Hermitage Hill is expanding its horizons to include farm fresh eggs, herbs, vegetables and flowers, in addition to the wedding and horse boarding. And then there’s the hops.

They’re currently selling what they grow, but eventually Craig wants to offer a craft beer to clients, which he can pair with his menus and offer a complete package to event hosts. As of now, Hermitage Hill, which is on the Artisan Trail, is only open by appointment, but they’re in the works of opening a farm store to sell everything from blueberries to peaches and give tours of the farm. “We could have a tour of the horses, talk about them, talk about our sustainability practices, show (guests) how we grow hops and food items, and then have the food here!” Hermitage Hill is a real family-owned and operated business, said Craig. Something he’s proud to work hard - and get dirty - for. “When I got out of the restaurant business it was because I just didn’t have time for my family,” he said. “Even though this farm is twenty-four-seven work, work, work, we live here too, so I’m not missing out on family time.” BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

Best Shade Trees for Hot Summer Sun An awning, pergola or large umbrella can offer some good sun block for both commercial and residential landscapes, however, the height of the shade from pavement, a deck or other surface is usually directly proportional to the temperature beneath the structure – the lower the structure, the higher the relative temperature. Conversely, high shade allows the air to flow beneath the structure and therefore is typically more desirable. Large shade trees cannot be overly emphasized in any landscape setting – adding upwards of $1,500-2,000 in value to a home, in particular those in close proximity to the main home or outdoor entertainment areas. My top list consists of shade trees that are typically long lived, tough under windy and snowy conditions, drought tolerant and offer high canopies that will be enjoyed for many, many years. If I could only plant 5 around my home, these would be those trees… There is not a landscape that could not benefit from the likes of the highly sought after white oak’s shadows. The white oak’s (Quercus alba) high, stately canopy spans a very large horizontal distance – a huge benefit for entertaining and for plantings beneath its large limbs. They grow relatively slow so choosing a larger specimen is typically desirable – 10-12 feet is a nice starter tree. White oaks can grow easily to 50 feet. Fall color is maroon to orange on its typical lobed leaf. The only real negative of the white oak is that it tends to hold its foliage well into winter which makes raking leaves a long drawn out affair. The sugar maple (Acer saccharum) may be my favorite tree of all time. Although it offers a more closed or tight canopy while young, as it ages it will open more and provide a nice shady environment. Sugar maples

grow to over 50 feet but at a slow growth rate. Again, it is better to start with a nice tall specimen so you can enjoy it while you are young… There are a number of varieties to choose from, Green Mountain has been good to me. Fall color is a bright orange to yellow. The black gum (Nyssa sylvatica) is one of those trees that routinely go undetected by nurseryman, landscapers and gardener’s alike and therefore can be difficult to locate. Growing to around 50-60 feet in height, they offer a nice, high horizontal canopy with a fall color that is absolutely a stunning red to orange color. Growth rate of this tree is slow to medium so choosing a larger specimen is also desirable. The katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) is the only non-U.S. native on my list and another of the lesser known trees that should be very high on any list of desirable landscape trees. Growing to 40-60 feet in height with about that same width, the Katsura tree has a heart shaped leaf very similar to the redbud. New foliage is a nice reddish purple which slowly turns to its green color. Fall color is a apricot yellow and the leaves give off a spicy, cinnamon/brown sugar odor as they senesce (or age and eventual fall from the tree). On older specimen, the bark resembles that of another of my favorite trees, the Shagbark Hickory. Growth rate is medium to fast on a specimen that is typically pyramidal to broadly ovate in shape. Rounding out my list is the American Beech (Fagus grandifolia). Growing to 50-70 feet in height, this specimen is right at home in a large park or alongside a patio or deck. With a very stately, pyramidal shape, the tree holds up well to wind and snow damage. As with most tough trees, the rate of growth of these is slow. Fall color is golden bronze and persists for some time in the winter.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My blood pressure is elevated. Why is this a concern? Hypertension is a serious medical condition. The top number is the systolic pressure and the bottom is the diastolic pressure. If either number is elevated you may have hypertension. Normal blood pressure is 120/80 and hypertension is when blood pressure is elevated above 140/90. If your blood pressure is above 120/80 but below 140/90 it is called prehypertension and you are at increased risk of developing hypertension. Blood pressure should be checked on several days to confirm that it is persistently elevated before the diagnosis of hypertension is made. You are at risk of developing hypertension if you are obese, stressed a lot, eat too much salt, drink too much alcohol or smoke. African Americans, people with diabetes or a family history of hypertension are more likely to develop hypertension. Sometimes very high blood pressure may cause headaches, but most of the time it has no symptoms and is called

‘a silent killer.’ High blood pressure is usually discovered during routine blood pressure checks. Having persistently elevated blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart attacks, congestive heart failure, strokes, kidney failure and blindness. Blood pressure can be reduced by eating a healthy diet and getting daily aerobic exercise, such as walking for 30 minutes. Limiting salt and alcohol intake, and quitting smoking can decrease blood pressure. Losing weight and reducing stress will help. When these measures do not work medications may be necessary. Blood pressure is a serious condition that can lead to catastrophic health problems or death. You should have your blood pressure checked yearly and if it is elevated you should see your doctor. Lifestyle changes can have a large effect on your blood pressure and overall health. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Rest and Recovery My father used to get “R and R” vacation days from work which stood for rest and relaxation. But with three active kids, the actual relaxation phase never happened. And, this might be a challenge for everyone. Perhaps you are envisioning laying in the hammock or watching TV for hours. It is an enticing vision but the body requires something a little different for healing between hard workouts and after an athletic event. Rest days between hard workouts allows your body and your muscles need to adapt from the stresses of exercise to replenish their stores and repair damaged tissues. This process occurs between workouts so give yourself a rest day each week. Another type of recovery is “short term” or “active recovery” which immediately follows the exercise or sports event. Studies show that if you engage in low intensity exercise following a hard workout or event that it will reduce muscle lactate levels, speed recovery, improve psychological stresses and improve

relaxation. Perhaps a walk at a slow speed, low intensity yoga or cycle on a stationary bike at lower revolutions per minute. This recovery practice improves your performance. Another type of recovery is to replenish your energy stores and fluids that are lost during exercise. This is achieved by eating the right foods after you exercise. Rebuilding glycogen stores can be enhanced after an event like a marathon within the first thirty minutes by eating carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, breads or cereal. Proteins such as beans, legumes and soy products are also needed. Try eating Greek yogurt which has twice as much protein as regular yogurt with granola and vitamin rich berries. To replenish electrolytes, try 100% fruit juices or fruit smoothies with bananas and berries. Too much training can backfire and decrease your performance affecting you physically and psychologically. So, build in recovery days in your exercise routine and treat your body well to avoid overtraining syndrome (next month’s topic).
