from

thepublishers Around this time last summer, Tommy and I were melting into our beach chairs as the sun set and waves crashed when we looked at the kids and started our “It’s time to go brush teeth and go to bed” speech. “But I’m not dirty!” Adam exclaimed. “I do not want to take a bath.” Nearly in unison, we looked at our scrappy son, covered in patches of gritty sand, and told him to run back out in the water to rinse off. Ocean showers count as baths. And so does creek splashing. The kids have been doing a lot of that lately which is great because Tommy’s dream of an infinity pool is still just a dream. But that creek, well, it’s where the kids meet nearly daily when the weather is as muggy and sticky as it has been. Never fail, in her pink Minnie Mouse attire, Peyton ambles down the hill toting a bag of her “friends,” sets the bag on the picnic table, and grabs the nearest stick. She pokes. She swirls. She makes mud pies and talks to the tadpoles swimming beside her. The frog that has been sitting in the mud sticking his head out of the water all afternoon doesn’t move. In fact, I think he smiles at this. If you remember 1980’s era studio

wrestling, you’ll remember a move where men in trunks jump off the side of the ring and tumble in. That would be Adam. He runs down that hill so fast, we’ve prepared ourselves for the day he loses his footing and rolls down the slope and into the water cartoonstyle. But it never happens and instead, he takes a mighty wrestler’s leap into the creek. “I am wet!” Peyton shouts. But she’s not crying, the kids are squealing, and for a minute Tommy and exchange nods as if to say “We have this parenting thing down right.” Amidst all of the commotion, we find the frog a few feet away. He’s on a wet stone, far away from his tadpoles, but close enough he can see them. He’s got the parenting thing down right. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford JULY 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com The Little Things of Life When from a long-distant past nothing subsists,… still, alone, more fragile, but with more vitality, more unsubstantial, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long time, like souls, ready to remind us, waiting and hoping for their moment, amid the ruins of all the rest; and bear unfaltering, in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection. —Marcel Proust, Swann’s Way The past years have brought with them losses, as is natural and inevitable, but these hit closer to home: family, a number of dear friends, and this May, my twin soul and loved-beyond-words sixteen-year-old dog. In such times of loss there is a profound beauty or peace that defies adequate description, the result of being forced intensely into the present where petty and trivial things slip away and we live in the sacredness of the moment. But then come the days of grief, and

we feel the impermanence of all. We search for succor, anything,… the life jacket of a friendly hand to guide us. And it’s then that we reach for the little things—nature, certainly: the flowers, a sun-warmed day, dappled light through the trees, the upturned leaves from a cooling breeze, but also those small acts of routine: making the morning’s cup of coffee for oneself or one’s closest. Pouring the wine for those at the evening meal. Rituals of food and drink that begin and end many a day, from Italy to France to Romania to the U.S., and from one heart to the next. Perhaps we really are more alike than different. Simple wines for simple succor: La Cappuccina, Madégo, 2013 (organic) - From Italy’s Veneto, near Verona (think of Romeo and Juliet if you think your troubles are dire) although this wine might fool you because the grapes are those of Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the “lost” Bordeaux grape, Carmenère. The Tessari family has been growing their grapes at the site of an ancient Francisan chapel since 1890.

The wine is smooth with cherry, plum and cedar notes, and without all those delightful chemicals. $12.99 Paul Direder, Grüner Veltliner, 2014 – No longer a secret at Basics for just a few who appreciate great flavor for a great bargain, this Grüner sells out fast. Spicy, with perfect balance and fruit, and in liter bottles—all for $12. Richter “Zeppelin” Riesling, 2013 – From Germany’s Mosel and served on board the airship Zeppelin, this Riesling, with a touch of residual sugar, has beautiful notes of lime and pear. Elegant, crisp and refreshing on it’s on at the end of a warm day. Or the perfect match for blue cheeses, grilled trout, spring rolls, even barbeque. $12.99 Moulin de Gassac, Guilhem, rosé, 2013 (organic) – The red and white Guilhem wines from renowned Mas de Daumas Gassac have been favorites for years. This 50/50 blend of Grenache and Carignan is mediumbodied with notes of ripe raspberry and cherry, but not too fruit-forward, just perfectly balanced. Excellent with simple pastas or grills. $12.99

Blue Ridge LIFE

When Beverly Spanninger moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2008, she had no idea that her four years as Lynchburg College would lead her to the love of her life and the career of a lifetime.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, I just really loved the environment and wanted to work outside,” said Beverly, who chose to major in Environmental Science with the hopes of spending a lot of time outdoors. “I took a class called sustainable living and they talked about sustainable farming and I thought that was really cool and could see myself doing it. I absolutely fell in love with it. I was hooked and decided that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” 10

Blue Ridge LIFE

JULY 2015

After several farming and sustainable agriculture internships, Beverly graduated in 2012 and moved to her then-boyfriend-nowhusband Shane’s hometown of Philadelphia to begin her first full time farming gig at the nearby Chickadee Creek Farm in Pennington, New Jersey. But it didn’t take very long for Beverly and Shane to realize they belonged back in the Blue Ridge. And were made to be entrepreneurs. continued on page 12

“We just fell in love with the area [during college],” said Shane. “When we saw this place had a river view and mountains on the other side, we jumped on it. We fell in love with the property once we saw it for the first time. Now that we’re here, we just love it even more.”

The couple bought a piece of land in 2012 and starting working the land the next summer. These days — just three years later — Turnip the Beets Farm grows everything from the obvious root veggies (like beets and turnips) to mustard greens, English peas, tomatoes and garlic. Though it was Beverly who studied farming, the couple splits up a lot of the work — especially the farming and harvesting — evenly and often together. “We just like being together and working together,” said Shane. But they especially like being and working together on their farm. As city-natives, the idea of working on a farm in the mountains was fascinating to them, but so were the people they met.

Sustainable living goes hand in hand with sustainable farming. The yurt and campers are part of the scenery of Turnip the Beets Farm, a sustainable vegetable, herb and fresh cut flower operation in Gladstone.

“The landscape has really intrigued us,” said Shane. “And the folks. We’ve befriended so many local people around here who are absolutely amazing to us and love what we do. We really like that aspect.” Beverly, an Alexandria, Virginia native, said she still loves spending time outside even though it’s technically work these days. “It’s just a slower pace of life,” said Beverly. “It connects you more to nature. We both grew up in a city environment and coming down here for college, we kind of got to realize that there’s a different way to live. It’s more peaceful and a lot more natural. We absolutely love it.” The couple even got married on their farm in 2014. continued on page 14

In addition to much of their food appearing on the farm-to-table menu at Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellyford, Turnip the Beet’s sustainably grown produce is for sale as part of a Market Style CSA at many local farmers’ markets (including Nelson, Lexington, West End (Henrico), and Second Stage (Amherst)). The Market Style CSA invites members to deposit a certain amount of money into an account before the growing season. Then once the markets open, the member will have that much money (plus an extra percentage depending on the original deposit) to spend on veggies, herbs, or flowers at any of the farmers’ markets where Turnip the Beets Farm can be spotted. Unlike a typical CSA, members of the Turnip the Beets Market Style CSA can pick which produce they want and when to buy it, all while supporting a local farm that claims to be “growing to the rhythm of sustainability.” BRL

... or fading.

In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the glare just a little bit, adding our 3M™ window tinting to your current windows will give you more crisp high definition views. Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. In addition, these rays also cause serious harm to your skin and eyes. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Our 3M™ window tinting is a sun filter. We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They work well for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They filter 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. This new tinting is not dark, won’t bubble or fade, and will literally improve the quality of your views. Installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting, they come with a lifetime warranty. SWIM CLUB

JULY 2015

Blue Ridge LIFE

continued from page 17

“For me it’s heaven on earth in the summertime and I dream about it all winter.” – Peppy Linden Peppy Linden spent her childhood summers swimming in and playing near her grandmother’s cottage on an inland Springfield lake in northern Indiana. So as soon as a friend brought her to the Blue Ridge Swim Club as a guest more than a decade ago, Peppy asked where she could sign up. “For me it’s heaven on earth in the summertime and I dream about it all winter,” said Peppy, who’s been a member of the private, outdoor swim club ever since that first visit. “It’s beautiful, it’s fun, I’m getting exercise, I can sit in the shade and read without hearing blaring music or people talking on their cell phones. It’s just an ideal setting.”

No chlorine needed in this spring fed pool. The original 1913 water flow system is still operational today.

And the fact that the water is what members euphemistically call “refreshing” (read: chilly) doesn’t bother her one bit. Todd Barnett, the fifth owner of the swim club since it was built in 1913, said that refreshing water is one of the exact reasons the club appealed to him. “The water is natural. It’s coming from a stream and a spring and there’s no feel of chlorine that you get in every other pool,” he said, adding that the water is tested for safety even though it doesn’t need chemicals to regulate itself (Peppy even used to take it home to make coffee with). “It’s like stepping back in time.” continued on page 19

Back in time to 1913 when the pool was built by R. Warner Wood, becoming the focal point of Blue Ridge Camp, which was founded a few years earlier in 1909. Wood was a University of Virginia grad who had done Master’s-level work in Greek and History. His 1918 brochure described the camp as offering “symmetrical, physical, mental, moral and social development in boys, along with plenty of healthful, natural fun.” This was a place where boys were allowed to be boys, camping out in tents and spending their Blue Ridge summer days boxing, wrestling, and of course, going for a swim.

HISTORICAL PHOTOS COURTESY BLUE RIDGE SWIM CLUB

R. Warner Wood , the man who built the pool in 1913, is said to have hired an engineer who had worked on the Panama Canal to design a way to channel the spring water into a nearby settling tank that filtered out the silt. Truth or lore, the same system provides water to the pool today.

The pool at the Swim Club is about the same depth and width as most public pools (2.5 to 10 feet deep and about 4.5 lanes wide). But at 100 yards long (compared to most public pools, which are usually 25 yards long, and an Olympic size pool, which is 50 meters (55 yards) long), the pool is really an anomaly in atmosphere, size, and shape. continued on page 22

“It tends to draw people who are drawn to the beauty of the place and the shade and the natural water,” said Todd. “It’s more of an adult place than most pools.” Todd, who also runs a kids’ summer camp on the BRSC’s property during the summers, has made several improvements to the club since he bought it in 2010, including adding WiFi, weekly yoga classes, and acoustic music shows every Sunday at 6. He said that some members were worried that he — a father to young children — would change the atmosphere of the place. “But it’s not been any kind of worry for them,” he said, with five years of experience behind them. “It’s still a pretty lazy place.” Peppy, the retired executive director of the Virginia Discovery Museum, only goes to the pool to swim and doesn’t take advantage of yoga and guitars, but she agrees that the club’s young swimmers are nothing to worry about. “It’s fun to watch the kids have to pass the swimming test so they can swim in the deep end,” she said. “The pool is just full of all ages, all histories. There’s no place like it. I’ve never seen another setting like this.” BRL

Selling Myths Debunked

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Opinions are a dime a dozen especially when you go to buy or sell a home. In the last article, buyers were alerted to myths that could lead to purchase pitfalls. With so much information and “when I once sold” advice, it can also be difficult for sellers to extract the “golden nuggets” of information needed to achieve a home sale. If you are considering selling, avoid falling for these common misconceptions. Myth: Anyone who ever sold a house is a real estate expert; Truth: Real estate market activity and values are time sensitive and location specific… it doesn’t matter what your great aunt Sally’s experience was when she sold a house in 1973 in Kalamazoo. Myth: Now is NOT the time to sell; Truth: If your home is priced appropriately for the market, is in good condition, and is being aggressively

marketed to prospective buyers, it can sell. It is impossible to sell if it isn’t on the market. Waiting out the market is not a short-term endeavor; while yearend average price may be stabilizing, it can take years to reduced inventory and substantially increase selling prices. Myth: Selling my house on my own will save me money; Truth: Selling on your own can be costly. In trying to avoid paying a real estate commission, the seller may generate no offer OR a lower and less desirable offer because: 1) the house gets less visibility reducing the pool of prospects 2) a buyer may immediately discount an offer to share in the so called “savings” 3) the asking price may be too high to realistically achieve a sale OR too low resulting in a below market value sale and a net loss to the seller. Myth: I can always reduce my

Marlo Allen

price later; Truth: Reducing your price in small increments puts you in a position of chasing the tide as it goes out. Buyers shop by price bracket and if your house is in the wrong one, it can be overlooked. Instead of getting your house sold, this tactic could help sell your neighbor’s home by substantiating what a good value it is compared to your home. A realistically priced home will sell more quickly and more closely to the asking price.

Myth: You should never take the first offer; Truth: An offer signals that you have an interested party. While buyers may want to test the waters with an offer that may be lower than anticipated, they may be willing to negotiate. Ask your listing agent for market comps, so that you can arrive at a “fair” market value. Be willing to negotiate a win-win outcome; a deal that both parties find favorable will be less likely to fall apart.

Myth: My home will sell in “asis” condition; Truth: Be prepared to end up making repairs or crediting the cost of repairs. Even performing minor repairs can make your house more marketable. In today’s market, most buyers are looking for an inviting home in move-in condition. Buyers who are willing to tackle the repairs after moving in may subtract the cost of needed repairs/renovations from the offer price.

To best position your property to sale, enlist the help of a real estate professional; marketing consultations are typically FREE.

ADVERTORIAL

Lessons From the Past By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC

Estate planning is absolutely essential if you would like to have any say in directing your family legacy. But simply having a last will and testament is not always enough. The will must be clear and carefully planned. Otherwise, your estate could literally shatter into fragmented and practically worthless shares a few generations down. In a recent Special Commissioner in Chancery matter at Rutherford Law Group, we witnessed this first hand. I was appointed last year to determine the distribution of an old estate here in Nelson County. The story begins with “George,” whose estate was in question. He purchased a sizeable piece of property in the late nineteenth century. He had a carefully planned will, in which his land was to be held by his wife with a life estate. Upon her death, it was to pass to the heirs of two of George’s siblings, because he did not have children. But as clear as George directed his will, the division of his estate became incredibly complex. For one, his wife outlived him well into the twentieth century, but she moved out of the county, and the property was forgotten by the family. So there was no personal tie to the land anymore. Furthermore, George had seventeen nephews and nieces who were beneficiaries under his will. But their descendants were never informed that they were heirs to this property, and as such the property laid dormant for over 80 years. As a result every bloodline had to be sorted in a family tree to determine which descendants were heirs as his will directed. George died about 100 years ago, and his entire family tree contains about 210 known individuals today. Hundreds of hours of research by various attorneys have absorbed a sizeable portion of the proceeds from the sale of the property. What remains is to be divided among numerous individuals in very small portions. Today, the descendents of George’s beneficiaries, many of whom never knew of their ancestor, get a tiny fraction - some as little as a 1/1,728 interest. Many cannot be contacted or located, meaning their shares may revert to the state in time. George’s good intentions a few generations back have had a drastically different impact on his family than he expected. Over a century ago, George could have planned his estate more carefully. He clearly wanted his family to benefit from his legacy, but his will did not consider all possibilities. Today, many of the issues seen with George’s estate can be solved with careful estate planning with an experienced attorney, whether by a detailed will or by creating a trust to have your estate managed and transferred as you desire.

CROSS THIS OFF YOUR ULTRA BUCKET LIST. It isn’t every day that you see an ultra running legend chasing a world record on the Appalachian Trail. Area trail runners met up with Scott Jurek who is trying to become the fastest person to ever complete the 2168.1 mile route. He’ll have to break the record set by Jennifer Pharr Davis in 2011, who completed the AT in 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes. Justin Watson, Scott Jurek, Jeff Lysiak, and Matt Thompson (above) posed for a quick pic at the Paul Wolf Shelter area. Bob Clouston was able to run with Scott for about a mile (left).

LOOSE SHOE FROM FARRIER TO BREWER, DERIN FOOR TOASTS A NEW CAREER.

continued from page 31

Derin Foor started home brewing about six years ago — just ahead of the current craze — and said everything just kind of took off from there. “I just enjoyed it so much and felt like our area could really use [a brewery],” said Derin, owner of Amherst’s new Loose Shoe Brewing, located at Ambriar Plaza. “There seemed to be a void between Lynchburg and Nelson Counties where breweries are concerned.” Derin named the brewery after what he knew from years of being a full time farrier, or horseshoer, including the Pony Flight (three 3oz beers) and Draft — not Draught — Flight (all six beers on tap). “The whole brewery is horses and blacksmiths and farriers,” he said. Loose Shoe has 18 rotating beers including lagers, pale ales, IPAs, stouts, brown ales, Belgians, and then usually a wild card of some kind with six kinds tapped at any given time. “There’s always something different on,” said Derin, who runs Loose Shoe with his wife, Kitty. “What people will find is that

everyone is pretty happy with the beers and variety they get. That’s evidenced by the fact that people keep coming back and taking growlers home.” Despite still working full time while growing the brewery, Derin loves the challenges of running a brewery and is still enjoying his once-hobby-turned-second-job. “It’s been a real juggling act,” he said. “I’m still basically fulltime showing so that’s my day job and then nights and weekends I spend working on things concerned with the brewery. I’ve been a farrier for almost 17 years. Time to change gears: a little more brewing, a little less showing.” Plus his new place of employment is in a great location. “Of course a lot of local people come in, but we’ve got to see a lot of people coming pretty good distances,” said Derin. “I wanted to stay as local as possible to where I live and this turned out to be a good fit. We’re kind of the midway point between the Lynchburg breweries and the breweries in Afton.” BRL

A PLACE TO CRASH Old medical building becomes inn.

The small building along Route 151 that spent most of its life as a country doctor’s office before the practice relocated to larger digs, is now becoming a lodging spot. “We saw the old Afton Family Medicine, which was once called the Rockfish Valley Medical Center, for sale for quite a while and we said, ‘that would make a good Inn,’” said Todd Rath, the new owner of the Rockfish Valley Inn, whose most recent venture prior to the Inn was The Blue Toad just down the road, an eatery that has since changed hands and is now The Rockfish 151 Pub. “I’m glad we were able to save [the medical center] and do something cool with it. A lot of people thought it would be torn down.” Rath says the new Inn along 151 will be ideal for people visiting for a taste of the region’s local beverages (they’ll offer a deal for a room and a wine/beer tour) or large family reunions or weddings (the Inn can sleep up to 26 people in seven rentable units — two of which have multiple bedrooms). Todd and his wife, Kimberly, kept the structure of the building (including the attached building that used to house the pharmacy) but did a complete overhaul of the interior with new plumbing, electrical, air conditioning and modern amenities. “Oh, I think it’s just fine,” said Dr. Bob Raynor of the building he helped create and grow. “I would certainly much rather see it turned into something useful than to sit there vacant. There are a lot of people who have people coming to visit in the summertime and they always need places to stay.” BRL

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

SORRY, THEO. THIS STORY ISN’T ABOUT YOU. IT’S ABOUT THAT FANCY 18TH CENTURY

RAM PUMP

When Russ Simpson and his family started their farm in Faber about six years ago, his wife and son decided to name the place the 180 Farm. “Because when they first started out with this farm, they did everything wrong and backwards,” said Russ, who insists it was them who named the farm and not himself. “When they say 180 problem, that means what we’ve got is what I call a snafu!”

But after several years of raising cattle, the Simpsons have a lot figured out — including how to make getting their 20 Irish Dexter cattle a lot of water without a lot of hauling or any electricity. That’s right. No electricity. No hauling. All with the use of a ram pump the Simpsons built and installed on their property. continued on page 38

“It’s very simple,” said Russ, who calls himself a farm hand — depending on the day and the task. “The pump was invented in 1793. They’ve been around for years but not many people know about them, except the old school people — and I guess I fit into that category.” The brainchild of the Montgolfier brothers of France, a hydraulic ram pump works off water pressure that builds up as it flows through a pipe, triggering a valve that snaps shut. This pressure shoots out a strong gush of water to another pipe. Open, shut. Open, shut. That’s the rhythm. Before Russ’ son, Andrew, came up with the idea of installing a ram pump and looked up how to do it online, Russ had never heard of one, nevertheless seen one in action. But he’s heard of a few people in and around Nelson County who have rumors of still getting water the old fashioned way. Even after Andrew did all the research, found

plans to build the pump, and assured his dad (who says he just “does what he’s told”) that the fairly low costs would be more than worth the risk, Russ finally agreed to move forward with the pump, which uses gravity to push water up a hill and toward the cattle. “He’s very creative,” said Russ. “My first thought was that it wasn’t going to work, but after he got the idea rolling his wife Lynn built the pump. My role has been to implement.” And what do you know? It’s been up and running for more than two months. In addition to using the water for drinking, the cows love playing in the water like kids in a sprinkler which gives a little bit more entertainment to the homeschooled kids who are starting to visit 180 Farm to learn more about pre-electric farming. Russ says the water should be reliable, efficient, and cheap. But most of all? “Beats the hell out of hauling water,” said Russ. BRL

The New STARR HILL BREWERY Founded in 1999 in Charlottesville, Starr Hill Brewery has been crafting beer for a long time in Central Virginia. The past year has seen some big changes for the brewery including a new Brewmaster, a renovated Tap Room, and now a completely redesigned look for their logo and packaging. We caught up with Starr Hill’s Marketing Manager, Jack Goodall, to discuss the inspiration behind the refresh and designs.

handcrafted look with vibrant colors, reminiscent of silkscreen concert posters. Wyndsor Hug, a local artist and Creative Director at Storyware, who’s designed album artwork for Dave Matthews Band and other local musicians designed all of the new labels and did a tremendous job. This past winter we had some small events in various markets to ask craft beer fans for their thoughts on some initial drafts of the new designs. Their response to the imagery and direction was overwhelmingly positive, so we knew we were onto something good.

image needed to reflect our customers as well as our team in an authentic way. The new look would still be exciting and true to Starr Hill’s DNA but also bring consistency and simplicity that had been lacking in the past.

Q: Why did you decide to redesign your packaging? A: As a 16 year-old brewery, we’ve grown a lot since we first started. Over the past year or so, we decided our

Q: Can you tell us the stories behind a few of the new designs? A: Grateful, our hop-forward pale ale, was designed with a hop farm in the background in a bright green that just jumps off the label. We also shifted from Grateful Dead references to a broader type of symbolism with the hands. The Love showcases a wheat field and a classic Virginia-style farm, tying it into the “Virginia is for Lovers” theme of the Commonwealth. Double Platinum, which is a favorite design of many here at the brewery, was a different direction where rather than setting a scene we went with an abstract take on a vinyl record.

Q: What else is new for Starr Hill? A: A ton! We’re brewing the best beer we’ve ever made and recently enhanced our biggest brand, Northern Lights. If you haven’t tasted Northern Lights, or any Starr Hill beer recently, we think you’ll really see a difference. We’re also brewing collaboration beers with seven different breweries this year as a part of our Collaboration Tour 2015. Our Tap Room in Crozet always has the latest unique releases on draft and every pint sold supports a different local charity each month, such as the Charlottesville Mural Group who just painted a gorgeous mural across the street from our brewery. We’re really excited to share the #NewStarrHill with everyone and hope to see them at the brewery soon. STARR HILL BREWERY 5391 Three Notched Rd, Crozet, VA 434-823-5671 www.StarrHill.com

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

Gateway to Adventure So everyone should be into the thick of adventure season, right. But, really, is there an ‘Adventure’ season. ‘Cause year round there is always an adventure waiting. When it comes to the start to an adventure, I draw from a time when I was a child. My first bike had training wheels. Those little black wheels that slapped on to the back of your bike and gave you just enough space to think you could fall over but you didn’t. I remember, vaguely, that it seemed like forever before I allowed my parents to take them off and let me roam. Since the day I gave them clearance to remove those pesky little safety guards, cycling has been one adventure after the other. For the uninitiated, I hope you will draw from my story that the hardest step is the first one. After that, you are on your own and that is the best thing ever.

Over the last 20 or so years, I have had many vehicles for my adventures. From rock climbing, kayaking, trail running, trekking and who knows what, I always come back to mountain biking as my vehicle of choice. My first experiences with falling into mountain biking was a work release. My previous career of equity trading was a very stressful day in, day out affair. One day after the market closed, a few of us started talking about the ‘new’ sport of mountain biking. We all picked out our bikes and headed for the ‘trails.’ I say ‘trails’ cause we had no idea what trails for mountain biking really meant at the time. Well one thing lead to another as most adventures do and the next thing I knew is that I had entered another world of adventure with new friends and unlimited adventure ahead. Thinking back about it now, I had no idea where this was going to lead but so fortunate I ‘fell’ into it.

The learning curve is steep for mountain biking. There is a ton of trial and error. Going over the handlebars is a given, not a choice. Figuring out which gear to be in and so forth is just the start. One fun story, our group, including now Nelson County local Neil Richardson, was learning how to ride with clipless pedals. Those are the pedals that latch to your foot. For the newbie, this can be horrifying but once you get it there is no going back. Two stories come to mind when we were first starting to figure these contraptions out. One, my buddy Neil was riding up a hill and stalled out about halfway up. He proceeded, what seemed to be a control fall, but was totally locked in to his pedals and tumbled back down the hill. He was okay but humbled. The other was all me. As I came up to a stop sign and proceeded to stop, I just fell straight over on the street. BOOM.

One second I was upright, and then I was not. Fun experiences for sure. If it is something you are intrigued by, try it. Of course it will be tough at first, but you have no idea where the trail may lead. We’ve had a busy spring and there is no stopping this summer’s adventures. Our Virginia Off Road Series will be promoting races at Montgomery Hall Park in Staunton, Walnut Creek Park off US 29 n Albemarle and down in Danville for July (www.VirginiaOffRoadSeries. com). We are putting the pieces together for our Adventure Race Weekend at the James River State Park where Rockfish Gap Outfitters, Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Blue Ridge Life Magazine, Trager Bros. Coffee and others will all be players (jrsp.cycleva.com)… And the hits keep coming. What’s your next adventure? Share with us and hashtag #EmbraceTheAdventure on Facebook.

The Ultimate Fire Pit One trend in outdoor living is the migration of the weekend retreat fire pit to the home landscape. When it comes to the traditional circular fire pit and their construction, we opt to design and build a modified concept so not only does it offer the traditional fireside chats, but expand upon this - ‘eye candy’ if you will. With that in mind, we design and build modified concepts that offer many other options not typically common with a fire pit including: self contained water feature, elongated sitting wall, wood storage and even area lighting to highlight the fire pit/waterfall at night. While not in service, these fire pits are highly pleasing to both the eye and ear while still offering the same camp fire feeling when a fire is blazing and stories abound. One of our designs for a structure of this nature resembles the shape of a human eye with a half circle on one side – elongated and broadly oval shaped to allow for maximum seating on the fire pit side. The opposite side of the structure neighbors a water fall and involves a half-circular extension on the center of this shape to serve as the collection area for the water before it enters the pump and re-circulates (therefore an eye shape with a half moon shape on top). The desired effect is as you view the fire pit, the water appears to be falling into the flames. Both of the walls that complete the eye shape are 18 inches. At the corners of the ‘eye’ shape and where the back wall begins for the water feature (envision 3 walls intersecting/starting at the same point), we added in a 12 inch column above the sitting wall. The water feature wall (or half-circular extension of the aforementioned eye shape) starts with the mentioned columns and then drops down 6 inches before making a

broadly sweeping, rounded slope up to 54 inches at its highest peak and then repeats the shape on the opposite side ultimately ending up at the other column. At the pinnacle of the broadly sweeping slope to 54 inches is the water feature opening measuring 18 inches wide by 3 inches high. All walls are 16 inches wide with 20 inch caps. If you stood behind the entire structure while the water feature was on, you would see a 4x8 inch hole in the center of the back water feature wall allowing the water from the feature to flow through the wall and into a 3 foot deep, freeze proof pit where the pump is housed. This pit is filled in with varying materials which allows its contents to largely go undetected – mainly a pump, water that re-circulates to the waterfall and a crude filtration system of pea gravel. With a reservoir of around 300 gallons of water, the unit can run for a good amount of time, easily compensating for evaporation and splash if the unit is filled to capacity. Once the water feature is turned off, all water returns to the reservoir by gravity and essentially leaves the unit freeze proof without any other work. The result is a powerful water feature that has minimal maintenance. The construction of this ‘ultimate fire pit’ involves varying types of building stone in all vertical areas aside from the inner fire pit areas where ‘fire brick’ is used. The sitting wall and back wall of the fire pit have bluestone caps while the entire water feature back wall (half circular extension) has building stone both as the vertical work and the 2x20 inch cap for this unique wall. The water feature exits the wall on a locally mined piece of custom cut soapstone giving it a rich blue hue.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have had several tick bites this year and I’m worried about getting Lyme Disease. Summer is here and the ticks are definitely out. Tick bites are a frequent topic of discussion in the office this time of year. The biggest concern for most people is tick borne infections, especially Lyme Disease, although other infections are possible. There is also the tick bite related meat allergy that gets a lot of press these days. The best defense from ticks is to avoid them in the first place. Stay out of wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. If hiking, stay in the center of the trail. Avoiding tick infested areas is not always possible, but you can use repellents that contain DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours. Or you can treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. You can buy pre-treated clothing that may provide longer-lasting protection.

These measures may still not be enough to avoid ticks. Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you. Conduct a full-body tick check upon return from tick-infested areas. Examine gear and pets. Ticks can be introduced into the home on clothing and pets, and then attach to a person later. Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill remaining ticks. All these measures may not be enough to prevent you from being bitten by a tick. Because infected ticks spread Lyme Disease at the end of their feeding cycle, they need to be attached for at least 24 hours before they can transmit Lyme disease. This is why it’s so important to remove them promptly and to check your body daily for ticks. If you have a question about a tick bite, see your doctor.
