• Who are we? másLabor is a 25 person business-to-business consulting company, an industry-leading resource for U.S. employers who participate in the federal H-2A (agricultural) and H-2B (non-agricultural) non-immigrant work visa programs. We work with more than 800 employers in 40 states who collectively employ more than 15,000 seasonal workers annually. Those businesses rely on us for help in understanding complex regulatory requirements and coordinating with multiple government agencies with the objective of locating and hiring U.S. or foreign applicants who are interested in and qualified for traditionally hard-to-fill seasonal jobs.
• What are we looking for? Due to increasing customer demand for our services, we seek additional motivated, high achieving professionals for our main office in Lovingston and a new satellite office in Charlottesville.

from
thepublishers We’ve been preparing ourselves for the possibility that the final stage of raising broilers would turn our kids into vegetarians. Initially, Adam was vehemently against killing the chickens until I explained to him we wouldn’t be killing the layers. “Okay, then we need black ones! I want some black chicks!” he demanded. Done. Adam’s got his new black chicks. And a few reds, some wiselooking grays, and an eccentric white and black one with a fancy coif. Chicken Processing Day came and I dragged the mobile pen one last time, this time closer to a row of killing cones I had set up. My friend, Melanie – who has got mad chicken and rabbit processing skills – came over with some extra coolers. Big enough for chickens and beer. The process began before the kids were awake but as soon as they had noticed what we were doing, they ran out in excitement. Holding a bloody knife, I set it down and told Adam to keep his distance from the scalder. He obeyed me because he was more interested in the borrowed feather plucker. He watched me lower a pair of scalded chickens inside the drum
and I let him flip the switch. In the mind of this 7-year-old, this step in the processing is hilarious. Watching fully feathered chickens spin round and round, getting more and more naked upon each revolution, is fascinating. At the eviscerating table, Melanie reached her hands inside the chickens to reveal its organs. Lungs, heart. Some of them had man parts. I decided to roast a bird the next day on the grill and as I sat down by the creek to eat it, Adam came barreling down from the house and ate an entire breast. Proud mom moment. As for Peyton? She’ll stick with unhatched chickens. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford JULY 2016

THE TASTE OF
SUMMER
Just in time for picnic season, Afton Mountain Vineyards has rebooted its rosé. She’s got a new set of stems and her humor is dry.

“Historically Afton Mountain Vineyards has made a sweeter rosé and it was called ‘Mountain Rosé.’ As we have migrated to a classic dry rosé, (we have shared both styles with our wine club and have gotten their feedback along the way), we felt that the packaging should reflect that it is a classic French-style rosé that is fresh and crisp and ready for consumption,” explains AMV owner, Elizabeth Smith. In other words, a bottle of this fits perfectly in your picnic basket. “Our winemaker Damien Blanchon is originally from the south of France, and he loves to make this beautiful Provençal-style rosé. It is fresh and fruity but with good weight and mouthfeel.” Becoming an increasingly more popular style of wine across America, the rosé is no longer limited to just simply being a “summer wine.” However, Afton Mountain’s version specifically is only available for a few months out of the year. Unless you manage to save it – and who has the willpower to do that?
“Every year we make barely enough rosé to be available from May to September and customers are clamoring for it earlier and later every year,” says Elizabeth. “We only produced about 172 cases of rosé this year. Released on Memorial Day weekend, we hope to have enough to share it through Labor Day!” Such a small stock of this favorite could be seen as cruel and unusual punishment. But when you are hand-sorting the locally sourced grapes used in each batch, seeing the fruits of your labor fly off the shelf is a welcomed success. “We make our rosé from Cabernet Franc, but it is picked earlier for bright acidity and fruit character than our traditional Cabernet Franc,” explains Elizabeth. “It is a “press” rosé, meaning that it is made from one grape with deliberate intention for rosé. The juice soaks with the skins for three days to give that lovely light salmon color and then “pressed off” the skins.” Pretty impressive for a pink drink. Which brings me to my next question.

Is rosé strictly to be enjoyed by the female consumer? Can guys sip a “brosé and still keep their man cards?” The answer is yes. “I love the rosé year-round, and if I love something, I order it. I feel no shame,” a male drinker told me. Another declared, “I would never order a rosé unless it’s during the summer. I associate it with fruits of the season. And a well done Sangria with red wine, rose, and Triple Sec really is the perfect summer beverage”. So one thing’s for sure – the men, they like their rosé. And you wanna know why? Because it’s a well done, finely crafted wine, (not just something made by mixing red and white wine together). Interestingly, it can be made from almost any kind of grape, from almost anywhere in the world, whether it’s France, Spain or even the US. It’s super affordable and versatile for essentially any meal, snack, or pick-me-up. It’s not red, and it’s not white, it can be sweet or it can be dry. It’s the catch-all of the wine world, it’s the princess of the picnic basket. “I love rosé - it’s got the acidity of a white wine and the fruit character of a red. That’s why it is so frequently deemed the “wine of summer” - with those characteristics a beautiful dry rosé pairs with a charcuterie tray, rich cheeses, prosciutto and melon wraps – Ok I’m stopping now because I’m making myself too hungry!” Thank you, Elizabeth. You’ve just provided us all with the menu for our next picnic. BRL

On a rainy Thursday morning in May, White’s Wayside Diner opened its doors after four years of renovation. Despite the weather, the small dining room was full of hungry patrons, many of whom had visited years ago when it was called White Way Lunch. As the room hummed with happy chatter, fellow diner Sue Armstrong talked of her experience in the store as a little girl. She is the great-granddaughter of Mary White, the store’s original owner, and she was eager to get back into this place that held so many happy childhood memories. “What I remember most was the candy,” she said. “We always got the penny candy. And at Christmas time the striped candy and the coconut candy.” She smiled recalling her visits. Harold McClain also visited White’s Wayside to grab breakfast on his way to work in Churchville. He said he often made stops on his way to work years ago and now, he laughed, “They’ll probably see a lot of me!” One customer recalled her Sunday trips to the restaurant, adding, “We’re just glad it’s open again!” Jack and Mary Wilson purchased the dilapidated property after entering what was supposed to be retirement. “We were trying to be retired and found our dream camp out on Braley Pond Road,” Mary explained. “We were expecting it to be a weekend getaway and it quickly became our preferred place to be.” They passed the abandoned restaurant several times and felt an emotional connection to it.
Jack Wilson jokes with David Howdyshell of Staunton in the store portion of White’s Wayside Diner which opened in mid-May. Jack and Mary Wilson spent four years getting the restaurant ready for business.

“We kept driving by this depressed property and lost resource,” she continued. Jack added, “What was a vibrant neighborhood gathering place was falling in... It angered me to see my neighbors treated so poorly, they were expected to drive out to Staunton or Harrisonburg and work in a relatively low paying job and eat a fast food meal on the way home and what had been a community resource was gone.”
Eric Argenbright and his 3-year old daughter Maile play checkers after having lunch at White’s Wayside Diner.
With that, they were inspired to take action. What they deemed a small investment made them the proud owners of the original White Way Lunch. They quickly set out to bring it back to life. A close friend and their two sons were the bulk of their workforce. The entire structure was renovated, floor to ceiling. New commercial grade ovens, mixer, and proofer were brought in for the bakery and they added something to the restaurant that hadn’t been there before: bathrooms. As they went through the renovation process they discovered lots of things about the White Way. First, everyone seemed excited to see it open. Just about every day, Mary said, “there were people stopping and saying ‘I remember.’” The two immediately understood what they were bringing back to the community. They also found an item that at first confounded them: a large glass box. It was one of those passersby who let them in on it’s true purpose. Mary White had a beehive in the back enclosed in glass so children could watch the bees at work. Mary and Jack found the man who built the box, Jed Shaner, and commissioned him to rebuild it so they could bring it back into the restaurant. continued on page 20

The one thing that folks were most excited about was Mary White’s pull-apart bread. Carolyn Maxwell, Mary White’s granddaughter, taught the store’s new matron how to make the staple. It took a lot of time together, but Mary was finally able to take the recipe to her bakery crew who are able to churn out as many as 24 loaves every three hours. Mary also took on the role of historian and collected as much information as she could about the site, including the nearby Millstone house, which had been used as an ice cream parlor, tavern, and dining room through the years. Creating a family atmosphere is most important to the couple.
“Our personal priority is feeding our neighbors,” Jack explained. “Local food restaurants are big right now, but there aren’t any with local food for local people.” Their mission is to provide food that is sourced locally and available at a reasonable price, made accessible to the local community, as well as provide employment for their neighbors. “It’s the family concept we’re trying to make happen.” Mary and Jack worry, however, their mission could be jeopardized by the Atlantic Coast Pipeline Project, which has rerouted the pipeline to cut right through their back yard. “We have a real concern for the water,” they explained. The project would require the use of their local water source to fill the pipeline during hydrostatic testing. Their fear is that not only would it have an impact on the output and availability of the water source, but also that the water may become contaminated. The interest isn’t just for the environmental impact; the couple spent more than $10,000 in purifying the water so it could be used safely. Additionally, their four 1000-gallon septic tanks limit the number of people they can have in the restaurant and using the facilities to 28; any more than that will exceed what can safely be processed and they risk polluting Jennings Branch. On top of that, the small operation couldn’t support the nearly 300 workers expected to set up camp just over the ridge. Put plainly, they said, “Our biggest threat is the pipeline.” They both feel very strongly that White’s Wayside could be a resource for their community and help bring vibrance that has been missing for a long time. “Historically the place was built because they would drive the cattle up to Highland County and West Virginia for the summer, they would stop here for the bread.” The Wilsons are excited about their venture and optimistic about their place in the local commerce landscape. With all the local food coming in and out of Highland County, Mary said, “there’s no reason we can’t be the first stop.” BRL

PREACHING the PIG An English teacher and her class get schooled on modern-day transcendentalist Joel Salatin. I am a Joel Salatin fanatic. I am also an English teacher, and much to the skepticism of my eleventh grade English class, even planned an infamous “Grass Stains Tour” field trip to his farm this past April. “But Mrs. Campbell, why are we going to a farm? This is English class!” We had just wrapped up a unit on Transcendentalism; Thoreau, Emerson, all of the old folks modern millennial students love to read about. I explained to the kids that Joel Salatin is a modern day Transcendentalist; he, like the old guys, protests (as much as possible) against the general state of intellectualism and spirituality. The field trip day came and when we arrived we were greeted by Heather, the tour guide, and immediately began our trek around the farm on foot. We visited the baby chicks, the grass-fed cows, the chickens, and most importantly two sets of pigs. The first group of pigs was in the barn rooting through a season’s worth of compost left over from the winter. At first the kids were grossed out, but Heather picked up the compost and said, “See? It doesn’t stink.” It didn’t. The kids happily got in. The pigs were also thrilled and gladly had their heads, noses, and tails scratched. The next set of pigs were happily, lazily grazing in the woods. This is what struck me about all of the animals. They were happy. After the tour was over I went into the gift shop and noticed Salatin’s newest book on display, The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs. I pre-ordered it on Amazon months before, and it was set to come out in May. I couldn’t wait. The book opens with Salatin’s famous self proclamation as a “Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer.” In true Joel Salatin fashion he certainly brings up the
heinous realities of CAFO’s (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations), the benefits of raw milk, and the important rise of the home school movement. However, this is no ordinary Salatin book. The opening line states, “This is my coming-out book.” What Salatin sets out to accomplish in this new opus is to bridge the gap between Christians and non-Christians alike in order to bring about the great understanding that all animals and land serve a purpose and should be treated with respect in accordance to the Bible. With verses of scripture intermingled with Salatin’s own interpretation of animal treatment in modern day society, it is a book that should not be ignored by anyone, regardless of religious affiliation. continued on page 28

MLS tips that can reach prospective buyers
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Home selling tips are flooding the marketplace. When you Google home selling tips, you get more than 71 million search results. That’s enough information to boggle anyone’s mind. If you are having trouble seeing the forest for the trees, step back and return to the basics. How can you create more exposure, in hopes of creating more demand for your home? It can be as simple as providing good information and it can start with the multiple listing service (MLS). The MLS is where most of the internet marketing initiatives take root. If you are selling, it is important that you understand how to partner with your agent to get the most out of the MLS. Here are the basics: Photos: Photographs are powerful bait. Good ones can lure buyers; poor ones can turn them away. The Charlottesville MLS allows 50 pictures, yet many properties have only a few photos. Buyers will completely
pass over properties with no and/or limited pictures. Pictures should tell a story and invite the viewer to want to take the time to see more. As the seasons change, consider updating the photos especially if main photos show snow. If you have favorite home photos share them with the agent. Otherwise, list with an agent willing to take professional quality photos that fully represent what the home has to offer both inside and out. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words! Text Descriptions: Don’t dismiss the power of a message, or the lack of a message, either. Incomplete or poorly written descriptions don’t entice a buyer. While there are character limitations, the text description should be eye catching and informative. It should address the major home features to attract the targeted buyer. If your house doesn’t sound attractive to you, why would it be to anyone else?
Marlo Allen
Driving Directions: Can potential buyers find your home? Be sure that your property is correctly mapped within the MLS. Improper mapping can result in missed opportunities. For example, if a buyer wants to live within a 5 mile radius of the high school, and your home was not properly mapped, it may not come up in the search. Make it easy for a buyer to locate your home! Other Documents: There is a wealth of information available to buyers online; make information easily available by having your agent upload documents and marking them as public. Helpful documents may include survey plat, floor plan, list of renovations, building specs, and utility data. Good information can enable a buyer to determine if your home is a potential match and worth scheduling a showing.
434-996-3525
IDX inclusion: The MLS is where most of the marketing efforts begin. Many nationally recognized home search sites, such as Realtor.com, Zillow.com, Trulia.com, and Homes. com, will pull the MLS data to populate their inventory database. Your home should be out there for the world to see, so inform your agent to include your home in the IDX, Internet Data eXchange. The MLS is a valuable tool if it is used to its fullest potential. Take an active role in supplying important documents and information to your listing agent. After reviewing the MLS listing, ask yourself, would you buy your home?
Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Blue Ridge LIFE
JULY 2016
continued from page 22
Here is some “marvelous” Salatin food for thought: “We’re the first culture in the world that routinely eats things that have never lived. In spiritual parlance, we’re ingesting things that are an abomination to our bodies – and then requesting prayer for the ailments that result …Ecology does not give us the liberty to deny its principles and neither does God.” In this book, Salatin starts off with a “Biological vs. Mechanical” comparison. The purpose of this is to show how, until very recently food, for both man and animal, was living and created by God. He explains, “Living food should rot” and “Mechanical things don’t rot.” Velveeta cheese anyone? Modern man-made, factory made food is “inert” and not alive. How can this possibly be good for our bodies? As the book goes on Salatin really gets into the heart of the problem with Christians today, as he sees it. Christians can look down upon hypocrisy, adultery, blasphemy, and yet we pour junk food into our bodies, destroy lands, and support food from foreign countries that took hundreds of gallons in diesel to get to our grocery store. This is just as un-Christian as anything else. We are destroying our God-given bodies and Earth. In chapters “Strength vs. Weakness,” “Beauty vs. Ugliness,” and “Sun driven vs. Earth Driven” he explains the need for the return to traditional farming practices using references from Genesis in relation to the Garden of Eden. He builds off the principal that before the original Sin animals, plants, Adam and Eve did not die, and after the Sin, the need for farming became essential to survival. People of God treated the earth and animals as holy and with total respect; therefore, these people were blessed by God. He requests
that Christians and non-Christians alike listen to the following statement, “When we provision our homes with locally sources consciously themed food, we surround ourselves with sustenance … Nothing we do in life is as intimate as eatingnothing.” In the closing chapters of The Marvelous Pigness of the Pig, Salatin gives us helpful advice and guidelines describing what we can do to make a big difference in our local community to help the land and animals. How do we empower ourselves and animals as well? Grow food and buy your food locally. Young or new farmers get to know your local land owners and see what is being done with the land. Can you help take care of it in order to make it productive? Finally, Salatin writes, “This is my tenth book, and I’ve agonized and prayed over it far more than anything I’ve ever written. It’s my coming out book. I don’t know what repercussions this will have on my life.” Here’s the takeaway: We should be kind to the land, and celebrate the individuality of each plant and animal. As a teacher, I think this same should be done for us as people. I can’t expect for all of my students to act and think the same way. That would make for a totally boring English class when we discuss ideas like Transcendentalism and books like The Omnivore’s Dilemma or Frankenstein. If you are looking for an informative summer read, go grab this book as soon as possible. We live in an area rich with seasonal produce and farmers markets. Even if you’ve never purchased a local egg, grassfed beef, or salad greens before, this book may change your mind. BRL

DEAR DANIEL,
GREENFIELD
[ nelson county ] STORY by MARCIE GATES’

It’s been about six months since your accident at the beginning of the year, and I’ve been thinking of you constantly. I think about you every time I drive down Rt. 6. I think about what must’ve been going through your mind when it happened, and I think about how they never caught the person that took you from us. This isn’t an easy thing to write. But I’m glad that I’m the one doing it, not some stranger who didn’t even know you. Someone who hadn’t watched you grow into the man you were becoming. Someone who hadn’t held you sobbing in their arms when your heart had been broken for the first time. Someone who didn’t understand the relationship between Man and Jeep. Someone who doesn’t feel your absence every day. The Pig Fam misses your presence. Nobody’s been quite the same without you. There is a conscious void that your constant smile used to fill. But I can still see you behind the counter, and I can still hear your cheerful voice bounce off those walls. The last day you were there, you weren’t even working, yet you climbed into the back of Straw’s truck and started unloading the produce and goods. You were always doing things like that. You didn’t want Straw doing it by himself. I was in there the other day and found the letter your family wrote to the Pig Family. It was in a plain envelope that simply said Rasnake in the corner, but my heart raced at the discovery of a new piece of you. What they wrote was sweet. We love you dearly too. So many people love you. You’d be excited to hear about the Minpin Sk8 Jam Fundraiser that Sk8 Nelson is holding at RVCC in the beginning of July. The new ramp is looking great and I know you’d be there all the time to break it in properly. I bet you’re still there all the time anyway, watching over everyone.

On a wonderful sunny day in June, I took my Jeep Wrangler out and visited your gravestone. No roof, no doors, just me and the open road that would lead me to you. My eyes kept drifting to the empty passenger seat, and I found myself wishing, hoping you were there with me, enjoying the scenic drive and the wind in our hair. The etching on the stone is beautiful, and I teared up at the display of trinkets from friends and visitors past. So many people love you. The last time I was there was the day of your funeral. A bunch of us got lost between the Chapel and the Cemetery, and somehow Straw was leading the procession of lost cars. Derek Stinnett, Luke, Abbie and I were all in the car with Straw and we all laughed when he would forget his blinker was on for extended periods of time. The whole debacle was something I think you would have enjoyed. We all rejoiced when we finally found you at the cemetery, but upon exiting the bubble of our vehicle and entering reality, the freezing wind whipped our cheeks and snapped us back to the somber mood that had hung predominantly over the day. So many people came to see you that day. So many people love you. And every one of us were brought to tears at the Chapel after Daniel Dennis borrowed a guitar and sang “Wish you were here” by Pink Floyd. It was perfect. You would have loved it. I’ll always think of you when I hear that song. There are a lot of songs that remind me of you. Songs that translate these feelings into words better than I can manage. I’ll always struggle with the reasoning behind it, why someone who brought so much joy into the world would have to leave it so abruptly. I am positive that Nelson County was a better place with you in it. And if you take nothing else from this letter with you, I want you to know one thing for sure – You are still here. You are remembered. You are missed. You are loved. BRL JULY 2016

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES
Rockfish Valley Community Center is “Where Community Happens” and “The Rock’s” newest project certainly exemplifies such a catch-phrase. “This is our new picnic shelter, this is where we’ll be holding outdoor events and parties and so forth,” says Stu Mills, executive director of The Rockfish Valley Community Center. “This is going to be supplemented by two large 30x40 tents that will enable us to have a couple hundred people here.” Hoping to land somewhere between backyard BBQ and Lockn’ or Festy, the new space should be perfect for the outdoor activities and events that Nelsonians crave. “When we decided we were going to do it, we went out and got a lot of donations, grant money from four or five different foundations, and pieced it all together. We raised a little over $46,000, which for us is a huge chunk of change,” Stu explains. “When we asked, people gave.” The “Rock” partnered up with Blue Mountain Brewery after coowner, Mandi Smack decided she needed to get personally involved. “I feel like something is wrong or out of balance when I don’t get to RVCC at least a few days a week. I truly feel like RVCC is the heart of the Nelson County community,” says Mandi. “We bring the boys to play basketball all the time and Taylor skateboards with them on the ramps. They love it!” And the list of people getting personally involved with this project continues. All individuals working hands-on are compiled completely of volunteers, whether they are local or associated with the Building Goodness Foundation. The architect for the Pavilion Project and self-proclaimed “chief honcho”, Bob Yoder says, “We’ve had a good crew of volunteers and we’re going to get a long way in the next couple day. I would imagine it’ll be functional in three weeks.” Since moving to Nelson County after a weekend visit eight years ago, Yoder has had a hand in many developments to RVCC. “I do a lot of volunteering here, this is just another phase of refurbishing the building, getting it usable by the community,” says Yoder. “And as long as Stu can keep raising the money, we can keep spending it.” In fact, Stu already has a project on deck. “This is phase one of the pavilion project,” explains Stu. “The second phase will be building a stage or performance venue. That’s down the road a little bit, hopefully by the end of the year.” BRL JULY 2016

A LIGHT IN THE VALLEY The original Rockfish Presbyterian Church was built in 1746 in the form of a basic log structure. With the passing of more than two hundred years, the face of the church has changed many times, but the steady strength of the congregation has never let the light in the valley fade. “We have a very active church and we open it to the community. We’re called the light in the valley,” member Sally Bryant explains. “We would like for people to think of us in that way.” 81-year-old Jim Martin has been an official member of the church for more than 70 years and has seen much of the growth firsthand. He points to the framed 250th Anniversary picture marked 1996. “I ought to be in that picture somewhere,” he says. “My parents brought me here when I was in diapers … so I wouldn’t have been one of the kids at that time.” Today the church is looking to expand even further to accommodate old, new members and even non-members for all of their activities and programs. Members of the congregation help at the local Food Pantry and with The Nelson Kid Care program which fights hunger in local schools by packing bags of healthy, filling food for the weekend. The Wood Ministry is made up of volunteers, including Pastor Louie Andrews, who cut, gather, and deliver wood at no cost to people in the community for heating their homes and sometimes cooking. And after the decades of selflessly helping others throughout the area, the church is looking for a little help themselves. A small credit has been extended to the church, however a hefty amount is still needed to redefine the face of the church once more. “We are really blessed in this church with the people that are in it, because everybody has talent in different things and we come together with that talent, and everybody contributes different things to the church,” says long time member, Bonnie Saunders. THE
SUMMIT IS NOW A BREAKFAST JOINT
As a result of a railroad depot built in 1860 (and rebuilt in 1867 after General Custer burned it down), Arrington was once one of the Commonwealth’s commercial hubs. Called “The Summit” for its claim to fame as the highest point on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, that depot then spent quite a few years collecting dust in a packing shed. But now it’s back to being The Summit once more. Though, at the base of Wintergreen Mountain, it’s no longer in Arrington and no longer at the peak of the railroad. “We love restoring anything old that is a piece of Nelson County history,” said Heidi Crandall, a co-founder of Devils Backbone Brewing Company. “We had erected this building back in its historical state back when we built the brewpub and it sat adjacent to our current location.” The Summit officially opened in late June as Nelson’s newest breakfast eatery and coffee shop. Sitting across from the Devils Backbone Basecamp, The Summit opens daily bright and early at 6 AM and closes at noon.
Farm and bread from local bakers, the “fast casual” cafe will take to-go orders as well as seat 50 people inside and an additional 50 on the wrap-around porch. Led by DBBC Director of Hospitality Tony Jorge, the new cafe will hire a few new faces, but will also be expanding the role of current Devils Backbone employees who have been cross trained by Trager Brothers to be expert espresso makers. The Summit will be one of just a few places on 151 to grab a quick bite to eat on the way to work or meet up with friends for a chat and a coffee midmorning, but Tony hopes that above all it – just as the rest of the Backbone has become – will be a place for people to gather. “We want this to be a destination point and an experience,” he said. “It’s not just for people traveling, but for the local community and the people who put us here to begin with.” BRL

Modern Living and Estate Planning
*phone and data charges may apply to text messages and internet access
By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC
GOLF Modern relationships often look different than traditional arrangements seen in the past. Separation, divorce, cohabitation, remarriage, and blended families are all common nowadays. If you are getting your estate in order—writing a will, organizing your finances, creating a trust—you must keep in mind a few implications of your family arrangements. Here are some things to consider: • If you are married, upon your death your spouse is entitled to claim a portion of your estate as an elective share — either 50% (if you have no children) or 33% (if you do have children). This is true whether you have a will or not. Your spouse is not required to claim this portion, and most spouses do not, but you should be aware of this possibility. If you have not been officially divorced, you still have a spouse for purposes of estate planning! Merely living apart and moving on does not prevent a spouse from making a claim on your estate, unless the spouse specifically disclaims it in writing. • So-called “pre-nup” or “post-nup” agreements can be effective tools for organizing your property in the exact manner you desire during your relationship. They may not cover your assets for estate planning purposes, however. Don’t sign one of these agreements and assume it forever establishes your spouse’s rights to your estate. • If you have step-children, they do not inherit from your estate unless you legally adopt them or name them as legatees in a will. So if you want your stepchildren to receive part of your estate, be sure to take action as soon as possible. • If you are married but die without a will, your spouse will inherit your entire estate, even if you have children born during the marriage. If you have children from a previous relationship, however, your children will split 2/3 of your estate, with your spouse receiving the remaining 1/3. • A partner with whom you cohabitate is not automatically entitled to any part of your estate. They are treated under the law much like friends or distant family members. If you’d like a partner to be awarded a portion of your property upon your death, you’ll need to create a will that specifically names them as a legatee. Estate planning can be complicated, but a good attorney can guide you through even the most difficult situations. Contact one today and give yourself peace of mind regarding your estate and the future of your loved ones.

Amazing Adventures Abound The Blue Ridge Life community is drenched in outdoor adventures. This could be taken quite literally by the way it has rained through May and June. For one recent example, did you happen to check out Wintergreen’s first Tread & Trail Series event over Memorial Day weekend? Wintergreen Resort’s Tread & Trail Series kicked off back in May with its Cliffhanger Challenge Mountain Bike & Trail Running Races. For the one weekend it didn’t rain in May, we were very fortunate and actually had sunny and very warm conditions. Saturday’s mountain bike race action was hot as nationally-ranked and well-known rider Jeremiah Bishop (Harrisonburg) showed up to challenge the Expert/Pro Category. He did have his work cut out for him as some of the strongest expert riders in the state, Joe Fish (Richmond) and Matthew
Bailey (Fredericksburg), came out to test his mettle. In the end, it was Jeremiah Bishop finishing first (1:22) after three laps of Wintergreen’s challenging 4+ mile course with approximately 1,000 ft of elevation gain per lap. Matthew Bailey came in second (1:24) and Joe Fish was third (1:27). Sunday’s Trail Runners had their work cut out for them. Neither choice of a 7k or 14k race that includes the aforementioned course sounds like a picnic. Wintergreen resident Bob Clouston chose the 14k (and anyone who knows Bob knows of his many ultra-running accomplishments) and finished strong. Podium finishers: Men’s 14k : Keith Cassidy – 1:26 Women’s 14k : Samantha Bird – 1:32 Men’s 7k : Matthew Denecke – 41:24 Women’s 7k : Amanda Brookman – 57:09
For complete Standings and Tread & Trail Series information, stop by www.VirginiaOffRoadSeries.com click on ‘WTG Tread & Trail Series’. There are still two more weekends (Labor Day & Columbus Day) with many more opportunities to score some points and take home some Cash & Prizes. There’s more than $5000 in cash & prizes up for grabs over the Series with the King & Queen being crowned at our last race over Columbus Day weekend! Of course a well-deserved shout out to our sponsors: Bold Rock Hard Cider, Crozet Running, Starr Hill Brewing, Blue Ridge Cyclery, Trager Bros. Coffee, And Wintergreen Premiere Properties. Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series with Bold Rock Hard Cider is in full swing. We just had our first race weekend with the Cliffhanger Challenge. We still have lots of opportunities for racing and winning some awesome prizes!
Cliffhanger Challenge – Memorial day weekend – DONE Summers End Fest – Labor Day weekend. Music, F&B, and Vendors Trail Rodeo – Columbus Day weekend. Exciting new event. Blue Ridge LIFE
JULY 2016
sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC
The Large Mulch Desert A large mulched area can be awkward in design simply because it requires a lot of calculating to make the area not look over-planted or just clumsy. Once a mulched area exceeds around 12 feet, I commonly go back to the drawing board and begin to think about other ideas to either cut the area into two pieces or install an alternative medium on the extremity in order to make it work and make it fit with the home or given area. Stone paths have a way to not only accomplish this in that they are not only utilitarian, but offer a winding or curved line that can lead the eye to many different forms of eye candy. When dealing with large areas that meet the corner of side of a structure, we commonly anchor the home with a large shrub or, more often, a small tree. These trees can be evergreen like an Emerald Green Arborvitae or Dee Runk Boxwood or deciduous like a Japanese Snowbell or Dogwood. The tree typically is situated around 8 feet (depending on the variety) from the structure so as to allow for future growth. Against the structure, it may be necessary to plant a deciduous or evergreen shrub as a foundation planting. These should never exceed the tree in height and more commonly should max out at around 4-6 feet. On the opposite side of the tree as you move away from the structure, we now drop our plant list options down considerably to a max of 3 feet (or even lower). This group, typically 3 to 5 in number, acts as ‘window dressing’ on the trunk of the tree which should be mostly exposed. From there, we pull out our list of perennials to continue to decrease the height but now add texture and color to the design. Now, at about 12 feet, we move in with the stones. Stones should be
placed about 20 inches on center so a person could walk from stone to stone in a slow pace and never miss a stone. The thickness of these stones is important if you are installing them yourself since thicker stones require less perfection regarding the preparation for them as their weight is larger what will keep them in place. Thin stones require more leveling, tamping and ‘footer’ requirements in order to properly set them in place and prevent rocking and movement over time. Largely for both we make an imprint of the stone and then remove that soil to a depth of about 2 inches. Stone dust is then poured in place and tamped to remove all air pockets and tighten the base. The stones are then placed back on the area to examine how the dust meets with the stone. The stone is then removed again and any areas where the stone dust is too high or low are fixed and the stone is placed back in place. A rubber mallet is then employed to tamp the stone so that it fits securely to the dust. Once the path is finished, soil can be added back between the stones and tamped to lock the path in place. On the opposite side of the path we begin landscaping again just as we finished on the structure side of the path – short plants first (ferns, Solomon seal, hellebore, etc) and then move to plants of graduating size as we move further away from the path. The best designs for these paths is either an arch or a simple ‘S’ curve. Too much curvature (beyond the ‘S’ shape) becomes too busy while a straight shot looks like an engineer was your design consultant and is, well, bad. If you choose the ‘S’ curve, make sure that your lines are long and flowing thereby allowing a guest to easily navigate your path.
asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I am worried that my child has autism. What should I do? If you think there is a problem with the way your child plays, learns, speaks, or acts, you should contact your doctor. A referral to a developmental pediatrician for further evaluation may be indicated. In order to make sure your child reaches his or her full potential, it is very important to get help for ASD as soon as possible. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause social, communication and behavioral challenges. People with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others need less. Signs of ASD begin during early childhood and typically last throughout a person’s life. Diagnosis can be difficult since there is no specific medical test to diagnose the disorder. Doctors look at the child’s behavior and development to make a diagnosis. There are many symptoms that may be seen in those with ASD. If you are ready for a faster internet connection, you are ready for Exede Broadband.
Discover Why They may have trouble relating to others. They may avoid eye contact and want to be alone, or have trouble understanding other people’s feelings. They may not want to be held or cuddled. They may repeat words or actions over and over again. They may have difficulty getting used to changes in routine or have unusual reactions to the way things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound. The causes of ASD are unknown. There are may be many different factors that make a child more likely to have ASD, including environmental, biologic and genetic factors. There is no cure for ASD. However, early intervention can improve a child’s development. Early intervention services can help children learn important skills. It is important to talk to your child’s doctor as soon as possible if you think your child has ASD or other developmental problem. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
