thepublishers The book Peyton’s been using this month to practice reading is called Fun with Pets. “I Like Pigs,” she said, as she read the title. The problem is our pigs weren’t pets. Even so, we treated them as part of the family, essential to our master plan of not having to go far for chops or sausage. The day they arrived, the kids were so excited we pitched a tent next to their pen to camp out for the night. And against my advice, Adam and Peyton gave them names. “I made my pig a fine pig pen,” Peyton read. We sure did. It moved weekly so that they could enjoy fresh grass. Because no one should ever have to dine in the bathroom. “I got a pail to feed him,” Peyton continued. We miss having that slop bucket around and watching the hogs devour it for dinner. And on the rare moments they nuzzled too closely to the electric fence ... Oink!!! That screeching squeal served as a reminder to the kids that those wires are hot. “He digs up nuts ...”

And all sorts of mysterious metal objects hidden underneath the dirt. The pigs had rooted up some sort of a tractor bolt. And an old shotgun shell. The evening before their appointment with their maker, Mr. Ben showed up with a livestock trailer. And wouldn’t you know, the hogs stepped into that trailer with minimal coaxing. The next morning, we drove them to the next county over to unload them and turn in a cut sheet. A couple of weeks later, Tommy and the kids drove off with two large empty coolers. “Is that Annabelle?” Peyton asked. “It sure is,” Tommy said. “We’ve got your favorite breakfast sausage now.” The story ends on page 99: “I am glad God made pigs.” Because chorizo. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford JULY 2017

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com July’s Joy It seems more articles than usual have appeared touting the health benefits of wine — always in moderation, of course. Wine is good for the heart, the digestion, but the study that fascinated me most proposed that wine is good for warding off dementia. Pass the bottle, please. To summarize briefly: the smell and taste of wine is not really in our nose or mouth, or even in the wine itself. Rather it’s created in our brains, in the same way that the trees and flowers we see don’t have color themselves — or not the ones we see. We see only their refracted light. Likewise, the molecules in wine have no taste themselves, but when they stimulate our brain, our brain creates the flavor in the same way it creates color. And, according to Gordon Sheperd in Neuroenology: How the Brain Creates the Taste of Wine, the act of tasting and then interpreting a wine’s many flavors engages more of the brain than any other human experience. I’d like to extend the idea to joy. Easy enough, as Indian sadhus, or maybe just your spouse, have been

telling you for ages that happiness is an inside job. Not something to be found elsewhere, in the conditions of life or material objects. And certainly not in the future, which never comes. Happiness is a choice, an attitude of acceptance toward life, perhaps, and also slightly different from joy. We find ourselves happy because this or that thing happened or didn’t happen. But joy is a state of being, deeper and more difficult to define with language. Because joy has no dependence on outside conditions, the gentle joy that infuses life despite inevitable suffering is within us, bubbling along, even when things don’t go our way. Bringing it back to wine: just like life, perhaps what makes a wine a joyous experience has less to do with whether the wine has 90 points and more to do with what we bring to it. When family gathered around my old wooden table outdoors, I didn’t bring out the cellared bottles, but rather popped the bottle caps — like on Coca Cola — on several liters of Les Maisons Bûllée, Pet Nat. (Pet Nat, which stands for Pétillant Naturel, or naturally and lightly sparkling, is made

by bottling before the completion of fermentation, and like orange wine, is catching on in the U.S. In France, you’ll find it on many a picnic table, its light effervescence aiding digestion.) In this loving setting, the ordinary Pet Nat became superb. And because the joy of being together infused the wine with love and warmth, in that sunlit moment, this lowly table wine tasted better than a bubbly bottle of Roderer Crystal. But try it for yourself. Infuse your wines with your own contagious joy and see how much better they taste. For practice: Domaine du Vieil Orme, Touraine, Sauvignon Blanc, 2015 – The Loire Valley produces textbook examples of Sauvignon Blanc like Sancerre, and more youthful ones like this from Touraine. Fresh white flowers, a hint of grass, citrus and lime. Light body with pistachio, green almond and blackcurrant bud. $14 Barbi, Macchiarello 2016 – This rosé, or rosato, from Umbria stole my heart. Made from Sangiovese and Cillegiolo, (chee-leeeh-JOH-loh) which means cherry in Italian, it is fragrant and fruity with soft, round, cherry (of course) notes. Pairs with almost everything. $11

Is Murder Ever Justified? The Things We Do by Kay Pfaltz Prison psychologist Eleanor Hartley has her work cut out for her when it comes to the mute girl named Jane, arrested and convicted of two coldblooded murders. What would make an ordinary girl murder two men and then go silent? Eleanor uses her work to distract herself from a vicious betrayal and her own problems at home. The Things We Do is a psychological whodunit that reveals the importance not only of what people say and do — often carefully monitored — but also of what they think and feel. The story weaves together two different narratives for a shocking ending. “The Things We Do is a story written with heart that is not afraid to look at hard truths, and ultimately offers redemption through truth.” – Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of Love, Medicine and Miracles Available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Basic Necessities, or ask at your local bookstore. GENERATION GERMINATION An iconic family garden center reaps what it sows.

11

Under a firmament of flowering hanging baskets Jenny Driver nurses her daughter Adelide. A fountain murmurs. The scent of summer wafts in from the next greenhouse, thousands of tomato plants conspire to raise the hopes of every gardener walking in the door. Below the relaxed calm of the fragrant babbling surrounds at JMD Farm Market and Garden Center a current of anticipation hums. Jenny muses, “ If people would come and see what we’re doing and see how excited we are - I think that builds and grows - people would be hard pressed not to come back.” Garden Center Manager Dwayne Pitsenbarger adds, “It’s great. Things are changing really quickly now. We’re a full service garden center, it’s finally getting there. This year has seen a lot of cleaning up. The hoop houses were giant kitty litter boxes. We hauled off eleven dump truck loads of trash. We’ve been fixing up, along with the daily routine of keeping a business going.” About 40-years-ago Millard (Jenny’s father) and Milton Driver opened Driver Brothers Garden Center on Route 254 in Staunton. It was the retail extension of the family farm in operation since 1850. The business thrived and at the turn of the 21st century was in its first heyday selling bedding plants, cast-concrete gnomes and the powders and granules of the nursery trade. A degree in environmental science, a generation removed and the next generation in her arms, Jenny plotted her vision and planted the seeds of an intensely productive business. Some shifts were dramatic. “We’re really conscientious how we grow things. There are all kinds of chemicals that will do - you name it - suppress growth, encourage growth, control bugs, funguses. We use no sprays, we’re bee friendly. We try to get beautiful stuff into the hands of customers.”

Intrinsic to that end is the deep-rooted staff. Crystal Wilkerson is the primary grower at the wholesale greenhouse. Years on the retail floor reflect in her selections. Mary Katharine Froelich, the garden manager, is frequently found bunching up vegetables for sale. Some of the vibrant produce, Swiss chard, kale, collards, lettuce travels paces from vertical grow tubes to the cooler. Short of crawling through JMD’s strawberry beds to pick your own it doesn’t get any fresher. Mary Katharine also oversees the meat brought from the farm’s pastures to the store’s freezer featuring beef, lamb, pork and eggs, all grass-raised, free of hormones and antibiotics. She says, “Because I’m a newcomer at the market I tell customers I’ve been on the farm for two years and they’re immediately on my side. They’re excited.” continued on page 14

Kayla Ranks and Wendy Gray comprise the part-time contingency seeing to the endless watering, repotting and grooming. Aching muscles and sore backs equate to superior plants and happy customers. Managing this twining, trailing, blossoming universe is Dwayne Pitsenbarger. He is calm, frequently irreverent, and confident with the ability to transform the mundane into something sublime. I called JMD to ask Dwayne when Kate and I might come by for photos and a chat. Dismissing me momentarily to tend to a customer I scrambled to scribble down Dwayne’s words, “You need that purple. It’s whore purple with spots. God, I love whore purple.” It’s a particular kind of customer service that Dwayne offers. Rightfully so. For six years Dwayne worked for the Shank sisters. The elder Georgia Shank Vance, decorated the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., the White House and other outstanding area homes with floral arrangements, a post she held for more than 35 years. Then half a decade under the mentorship of Andre Viette, the nationally recognized horticulturist with extensive greenhouses supporting a hybridized perennial breeding program, familiarized Dwayne with the nuances of the trade. However, most of Dwayne’s skill is homegrown. “I think I always gardened. My garden is not finished. In my mind they never are.” Dwayne considers the influence of his grandmother, Violet Virginia (who had a twin sister, Viola Virginiana), “She kept flowers, she canned and did all of that stuff. She used to teach the girls at Buffalo Gap High School how to can food in home economics class. That was ages ago. Food preservation was a thing then, in the late ‘50’s - early ‘60’s.” continued on page 16

The romance of the past is not lost on Dwayne, especially when it comes to flowers. “You know? Grandma’s geraniums, bacopa and that freaking spike in the middle? Everybody still wants that look. I even like it. You like it. It’s reminiscent of a time on your grandmother’s porch. I think that’s endearing to people, even if they’re just doing a few pots.” A much sought after talent for events sponsored by the Augusta Garden Club, Historic Staunton Foundation and private clients, Dwayne’s compositions are always unmistakable. Even when it comes to an entire garden center. Customer Sharon Sproul exclaimed upon entering JMD recently, “Dwayne, this is so beautiful! It looks like every house tour you’ve ever participated in. It’s really inviting, it’s clean, it smells good.” Summer brings bushels of vegetables to the market. Annuals are reasonably priced and in excellent condition, no sun-fried marigolds here. Newly built raised beds are bursting with fresh cut flowers. Autumn is the time to tuck in perennials and the selections range in size from quarts up to three-gallon. Trees and shrubs abound. And of course pumpkins. Jenny is nurturing some Dill’s Atlantic Giants known to top out in the 400-600 pound range. The winter season is resonant with the freshest pine garland, Christmas trees and the ever changing kaleidoscope of poinsettias. Loyal customers mark their calendars to attend the late afternoon open house in December, a tradition Dwayne started years ago. The gnomes skittered away in a 75%-off sale years ago to be replaced by offerings grandmother would be comfortable with, longtime customers are heartened to see revitalized, and a baby can grow into. Blue Ridge LIFE JULY 2017

Noah Hughey-Commers is one of those guys who’s been hiding in the woods of Nelson County, slowly and quietly living out his passion – wood fired pottery. Throughout the year he can be found splitting wood for the wood-fired kiln, or throwing pots in his studio next door. I’m sure at some point he’s chucked his work across the room, but in this instance, I’m referring to the process in which a shapeless lump of clay is placed on a potter’s wheel and molded into a piece of art as the wheel turns. Noah attributes his love of all things clay to growing up around local artist, Kevin Crowe at Tye River Pottery. “I was good friends with his boys, so I remember playing around the studio, making toy soldiers out of clay,” tells Noah. “A little bit later, I was really excited about firing. It’s everything that an adolescent kid wants – fire, staying up late, we just hung out around the kiln and it was a twice a year thing. It was a really important bookmark in my year, an important part of my life.” After being homeschooled for years and subsequently graduating from Mary Washington with a degree in English, Noah returned to Nelson County, contemplating his next move. “I didn’t know what I was going to be doing with myself, but I came out of that undergrad experience and just wanted to work with my hands again,” he explains. “And instead of looking for a job, which didn’t seem like a lot of fun, I started working down at Kevin’s studio. And that turned into a two-year apprenticeship from 2008-2010.” It wasn’t long after that Noah felt the burning desire for a kiln of his own. So, he built himself one.

“I started piecing it together in 2011, putting footers down. Pretty much all the materials are found. The refractory material, [material that retains its strength at high temperatures], is pretty expensive. The new firebrick can cost up to about three dollars a brick and there’s upwards of three thousand bricks in the kiln,” says Noah. “So, it was just a slow thing, it was driving to Maryland and other parts of Virginia with the truck and hauling bricks back from people who would sell them to me or give them to me. I just collected things, working really slowly.” Muddy Creek Pottery underwent their first firing in 2015, with admittedly “uneven” results. “We’re loading firewood literally around pottery as it’s heated, and the idea is that we’re building up an ember bed around the pots, we’re creating ash surface on the pottery, and that’s the point of doing wood-fired work,” explains Noah. “We’re taking the minerals in the wood ash which melt after a certain temperature, and we’re melting that onto the surface of the pottery. So, all the exterior surface is coming from that natural wood ash.” Pieces of firewood that took months to split are painstakingly loaded by hand from the front and each side of the kiln in rotation during the week-long firing process. “In doing so, that first time it broke a lot of pots. But this last firing, which was the third firing, was by far the most even, the fewest breaks. It was just a matter of figuring out how to load it best, and keep a safe distance with wood but also, we’re building coals up around pottery, so there’s a balance.” “A safe pot is also a boring pot,” says Noah. “Finding that balance is tricky.” The most recent firing began the weekend of May 20, and the work has been non-stop ever since in preparation for the open house, which took place the weekend of June 17. “We just pulled stuff out a few weeks ago. We fire, and that takes a week, then it cools for a week, and then we pull stuff out and clean it off, and that takes a while. It’s about eight hundred pieces and about half of that was my work,” tells Noah. continued on page 22

“There were pots from ten different people in it, so it’s a real community effort. People come from the D.C. area and around different places, and hang out for four days while we fire it, and bring a bunch of food and we all do shifts around the clock and fire together.” Adam McNeil was one of the two other potters featured at the most recent open house alongside Noah. This man was apparently born with the innate gift of creativity in all forms. He is a master woodworker and guitar-maker for Rockbridge Guitar Company, which specializes in custom built guitars for an impressive list of musicians. “I really like making stuff. I’ve been doing my full-time job for ten or eleven years now, but I’ve been doing pottery for longer, since college,” says Adam. “This potter community, with Noah being the head of Muddy Creek, has allowed me to make enough pots to actually try to sell them. And I couldn’t have done that without the pottery scene.” The third artist featured at the open house was Sherri Raffaele, who has been a potter ever since she took a ceramics class at the age of fifteen. “I apprenticed with Kevin Crowe for two years and finished about a year ago in May. That’s how Noah and I know each other, we all fired with Kevin originally,” tells Sherri. “Before I apprenticed with him, and after, I’ve always had my studio in my home, and since I’m into wood-firing and I live in an apartment in Charlottesville, I can’t really have a wood kiln. So, it’s been really great to collaborate with Noah and to be able to fire my work here.” In addition to being a part-time potter, Sherry also works as a brewer at Champion Brewery full-time. Being one of the only women in her field while brewing, she’s no stranger to the hard work that is also required in the firing process. But whether you’re man, woman, or that kid making toy soldiers out of clay, it would seem as though pottery lights a fire inside you. And whether it’s blazing like a 2000°F kiln or a slow-burning ember, once it’s lit, there’s no putting it out. BRL

Purchasing Peace of Mind Home Warranty FAQs

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

There are fees for loan origination, real estate attorneys, selling commissions, recording taxes, and yet more charges for hazard insurance, title insurance, appraisals, and inspections. Let’s admit it: The settlement charges associated with buying or selling a property can add up. Most charges are standard or customary and are not optional. However, there are a few fees that you make the decision to “buy into.” Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about home warranties that may help you, as a prospective purchaser or seller, determine the value of a home warranty plan. What is a home warranty? Home warranties provide repair and replacement coverage when appliances and systems experience mechanical failure. If you are constructing or purchasing a new home, problems encountered after closing

are most likely covered by the builder for the first year of ownership. A home warranty protection plan can be purchased by a seller or buyer for any home, regardless of age. How does it differ from homeowner’s insurance? A warranty replaces items that fail on their own, while homeowner’s hazard insurance takes care of items damaged in fire, wind, or some other type of event. A home warranty plan might cover something that would be omitted from coverage with a homeowner’s insurance policy, thus filling a critical gap in protection. For example, if your dishwasher leaked and caused damage to the floor, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the damage to the floor, but not repair or replace the dishwasher. A home warranty in most cases would cover the faulty appliance. What does the warranty cover?

Marlo Allen

Home warranty coverage and fees can vary. Shop around and understand which plan offers the most protection. Standard home warranties may cover plumbing, appliances, and heating and cooling. For additional fees, coverage plans might include higher ticket items such as private septic and well. How long is a home covered? A typical plan is effective for one year from the time it is purchased by the homeowner or from the time it is actually transferred to the purchaser at settlement. Plans have renewal options; sometimes the renewal cost may be higher than the initial rate. How much does the warranty cost? Expect standard home warranties to cost around $500 or more with add-on coverage and upgrades. Another cost to note when selecting a plan is the cost of a service call in the event of a claim.

Stoney Creek real estate market is on the RISE!

Who benefits from a home warranty? Buyer – After closing on a home, coming up with additional funds to repair or replace a faulty appliance or system may be difficult. A home warranty is peace of mind against unexpected repairs or replacement costs. Note: Even if the seller is not offering a warranty, a buyer can still purchase one. Seller Offering a home warranty can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers. In addition, most plans cover the home while it is listed and may require no payment until settlement. Whether or not you purchase a home warranty, you will at least better understand your options. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. WHEELERS COVE

[ nelson county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

CHASING CHESTNUTS Bringing back the blighted American Chestnut

Nearly one hundred years ago, the American Chestnut tree was more common than the mighty Oak in certain parts of the US. But after the accidental exposure of an Asian fungal disease known as blight, the population was crippled to near extinction. Today, in Nelson County, tucked in the rolling hillsides of Wheeler’s Cove, is a farm that’s putting the chestnut tree back on the map. David and Kim Bryant purchased a 46-acre plot of pine-covered land in 2003, and after six years of clearing and prepping, and another eight years of growing, they now have one of the biggest chestnut farms in Virginia, and an operation aptly named, Virginia Chestnuts. “We have upwards of fifteen-hundred Dunstan variety trees on 23-acres. And we track the trees; every row has a designation and every tree has a number. So, when we do an inventory it’s tree by tree,” says Kim as we stroll through the fields of Bryant Farm. And even though the size of their crop is something worth boasting over, Kim and David’s trees were planted with more than just repopulation in mind. “Our plan is not for reforestation purposes, but for nut production purposes. So, these trees are for the growing of nuts,” David explained. continued on page 33

“What we’re trying to do is reintroduce chestnuts to the American palate and it’s a multi-year process, but we have lots of positive feedback. We’ve had our struggles getting started and getting off the ground but I don’t think there are many interesting stories that don’t involve some struggles.” As nuts as it seems, people of all age ranges have never tasted or truly experienced the famous words of ‘chestnuts roasting on an open fire’ – Kim Bryant included! “I had never had a chestnut before our farm,” Kim admits. “So that’s why we really like going to places and roasting the chestnuts to give everybody just a sense of what that flavor is. People don’t realize how diverse they can be, so we have, in our little test kitchen, made chestnut candies, puree, put that into a soup which is wonderful, we had a brewery purchase chestnuts a couple years ago and made a delicious ale. So, we have a lot of options, and the fact that they are gluten-free, I’m really hoping that that opens up a whole new opportunity.” The Bryants are just one of five chestnut farms in their growers group that produce these nuts for commercial purposes. But these guys aren’t trying to monopolize all the business for themselves. In fact, they’re looking for new growers all the time. “We’re hoping that Nelson County really becomes the place for chestnut growers. It’s a unique specialty crop and it’s a versatile nut – it can be used in everything. The question was, can we do it commercially and can we convince others to do it commercially, and that really is the effort underway,” David says. continued on page 34

continued from page 33

“To sum it up, it’s an informal cooperative. Most growers don’t want to handle sales and the inspections, and we’re fine to do that. If you just have a little bit of land and are looking for a little something to do, we’ll sell you the trees and you can get started, and at the end of the harvest, you already have a buyer. So, once we get passed the growing and the picking, all of the folks in our growers group get them to us, and we take the next step, and that is washing, drying, packaging and developing the sales chain.” And according to the Bryants, the process of producing chestnuts isn’t as labor intensive as one might think – especially when your youngest kid wants to do all the mowing! You are, however, completely at the mercy of the weather. This year, blooms started to appear as early as mid-May, a whole two months earlier than expected.

“The basic life cycle of the chestnut tree is that the blooms are supposed to come out in July, and then in September once the nuts come in, they start falling to the ground and we actually harvest from the floor of the orchard. We have a piece of equipment that goes through and picks up these chestnuts, just like golf balls, and that goes on for 4-6 weeks.” Each tree has the potential to produce up to fifty pounds of nuts in a full year, and at the going wholesaler rate of $3.00 to $4.00 per pound, you’ve got yourself an easy cash crop. The Bryant’s make it seem so easy, it’s hard to believe that nearly ten years ago, 90% of the chestnuts eaten in the US were imported and usually from European countries. Perhaps in another ten years, the majority of chestnuts will come from Nelson County. BRL

HORSES ON HEMP AT PASMORE STABLES IN WHITE HALL, PINE SHAVINGS ARE NEARLY HISTORY

Pasmore Stables in White Hall is in the process of transitioning its bedding from pine shavings to bales of Old Dominion Hemp. For more information, connect online at www.odhemp.com and odhemp@gmail.com.

continued from page 37

Marty Phipps was waiting for me in his black Ford Escape outside Piedmont Grocery, the morning after a gully washer struck White Hall, swelling creeks and testing bridges and culverts. A grin and a handshake-through-the-window later, I drove behind him before stopping at the gated entrance of Pasmore Stables, home of Greber Dressage. It’s the day before the Kentucky Derby and the smiling blonde in the red jacket and riding pants is Barbara Greber. Her husband, Bruno, a renowned trainer of thoroughbreds, is busy raking stalls, some of which are padded with pine shavings. But that’s the old way of doing things. Marty takes me to the barn where they’re storing the hemp. “There are still places in the country where people can get a truckload of saw dust for $300. I can’t compete with that,” Marty explains, showing me the densely packed bricks of hemp bedding stacked like blocks against a wall. “What I can tell them is that sawdust will be on their property for many, many, many, years. This product, we can get rid of right away. We can spread it. We can compost it. It doesn’t have the acidity that some pine does. It has a far more absorption rate than what you would see with those others.” Part hemp evangelist and part salesman, Marty graduated from Albemarle High School before heading to Arizona for several years to cut his teeth in management in the food and beverage world. As part of a growing movement lobbying lawmakers to legalize the growing and sale of industrial hemp – a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant that can be used to make rope and paper – Marty launched Old Dominion Hemp in August 2015, spending the first 8-9 months donating the bedding to equestrian non-profits like the Retirement Thoroughbred Foundation and Piedmont Search and Rescue. He was looking for feedback while trying to figure out what he could sell it for.

“You need to be cost effective. We need to make it to where it is affordable to use our product.” So after crunching the numbers, he settled on $12.25 a bale. Marty initially tried out a tiered pricing structure, where large purchasers would get a price break, but he soon learned that wouldn’t work. “It wasn’t fair to offer somebody with 100 horses and then someone that only has one. So I needed to come to a price point to where everybody on both ends could afford.” continued on page 40

Here at Pasmore, Barbara has roughly a dozen horses staying at the stables permanently. The day before, she hosted a group of half a dozen riders who brought their horses. To say her farm goes through a lot of bedding would be an understatement. “The amount of compost we have is big. It’s huge,” she said. And unlike pine, the hemp breaks down quicker, which is a bonus, Barbara said. Inside the stables, the benefits are clear. Horses are large animals and keeping things neat and tidy is a challenge. “The main thing is the dust,” Barbara explains, referring to the particles pine shavings create, which can encourage respiratory issues. (Marty says he has veterinarians using his hemp bedding for that very reason). Pine shavings are a dust factory. Hemp is a different, kinder, beast. Barbara first tried the bedding on her own horse, Lindau, a Holsteiner. “Bedding is, to me, really important. I want them to be comfortable.” And on a rainy dreary day like today, the horses ride out the weather inside. “The absorbency is really good,” Barbara says. “It actually keeps the horses pretty clean, which is another important thing because it just drains down when they lay on the dry bedding ... We have been very happy and so we’ve begun to move every horse onto the hemp.” In an ideal world, Marty would be sourcing the hemp locally. And even though educational institutions like James Madison University are growing test plots, Marty is having to import the product. Not from nearby Kentucky, where U.S. Senator Rand Paul has been a strong and vocal advocate for industrial hemp in Washington, but from Europe. “We could take all of the hemp in the United States and it wouldn’t be enough for us,” Marty explains. “It’s a signal that we have a lot of work to do educating our farmers to them know, ‘Hey, there’s an agricultural crop out there that we can have our hands on that could potentially turn around some of these small towns.” And help horse owners big and small keep their animals comfortable. “If the big guys are finding a way to use it, and they’re finding it cost effective, then you can too.” BRL 40

JULY 2017

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

The Outdoor Experience The outdoor living space, fully equipped with grill, fridge, bar, electrical outlets and counter space, is now the newest “must have” for homeowners. Dovetailed closely with this area is an overhead structure to prevent the hottest day or a touch of “liquid sunshine” to thwart your plans with your guests. The umbrella affixed to a 42-inch diameter table is fine for small areas but often times leaves a party of four with only half enjoying its canopy at a 6 o’clock cheese and wine venue. Designed correctly, this outdoor area will not only be the epicenter for many engagements over the years, but will also add height/architectural elements that will decorate your landscape for years to come and add value to your home. Structure of this nature can range in many sizes and shapes. Careful consideration must be taken into heights and roof configurations to allow for unimpeded access around knee braces and the exodus of smoke. All bracing on the corners should be at a minimum of 78 inches from the floor so no one hits their head. Where a fire is involved, a gabled roof, as in a pavilion, will best allow for smoke to leave since two sides of the structure are higher than the two other sides, allowing air to move in and out. When a gazebo is desired, adding an open cupola in the center will allow for the same movement of air, now existing in the dead center of the structure. Covered pergolas with sail cloth will keep light rains out and provide a nice shady area to sit a while. However, sail cloths will not allow smoke to exit very efficiently, so varying the height from one side to the other will allow air to flow out. Either way you go, typically the size should be minimum 10 feet square.

Depending on the design, typically the cooking area is laid out so that views are not obstructed by the grill. A popular shape for the cooking and bar area is like a boomerang with the grill being on one tip and the sitting area on the opposite. Between these two points can be an outdoor sink, fridge and storage space. Since the area is covered, many different options exist for the material used for the counters – ranging from stone, wood to metal. When wood is used, an appropriate sealant must be applied to protect the species from glass marks and an occasional rain that finds its way into the structure. The structure can also just have a portable grill and wrought iron seating when a budget is more restricted. Since the unit is wood on all sides, the flooring of these has many different options. Dry set stone, wet laid stone, and wood are all options. Depending on what area this structure is adjacent to will often determine the material used. The extension of an existing patio may push you to the same material, however, if you consider this similar to a new room in a house, the options are wide open (just as a bathroom floor can differ from an adjacent room’s floor). How you treat the wood involved in this design is directly controlled by the flanking structure near it. Where stained fir beams exist on an existing structure, the new structure will most likely closely mock this color. The same can be said for the roof. However, it is completely acceptable, and quite striking (in a good way), to opt for a metal roof on this structure giving it a totally unique flavor when compared with the house. Since the beams and stain are repeated from the homes original design, the roof can break and offer its own artistic flair to your new dining area.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I’m old enough that I don’t see the point of exercising any more. I’m not trying to win any races. Exercise is important at all ages. As we get older it becomes especially important. Regular exercise helps prevent chronic diseases, improves mood and lowers the risk of injury. People of all ages and fitness levels, even those with chronic diseases, benefit from regular exercise. There are different types of exercise and each has its benefits. A combination of different types of exercise is best. Aerobic exercises help create and maintain good endurance and cardiovascular fitness and should be done daily. Strengthening exercises make your muscles strong and should be done 2-3 times per week. Balance exercises help prevent against falling and flexibility exercises help stretch your muscles and keep you limber. These should be done several times per week. Even if you can’t do everything that is recommended, anything you do will be beneficial. Many people are adverse to exercise but if done purposefully exercise

Discover Why can be fun. There are many ways to get fit and you can explore different options until you find what works best for you. Yoga or Pilates are great ways to combine several different types of exercise. Join a gym if you like, or work out to YouTube videos. Go walk around the neighborhood with a friend. Use the exercise equipment in your basement that is covered with laundry – you know it’s down there! It’s all beneficial. Be sure to see you doctor prior to starting an exercising routine. As we get older, exercise is all about maintaining quality of life and independence. If you are able to do your housework and do your shopping you can remain independent. If you can stay on your feet and not fall and break a hip you can remain independent. You can be sure that if you have a regular exercise routine you will be better off. After all, exercise is medicine! Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
