thepublishers Driving down the road on my way to the gym one morning, the Jeep started acting funny. I hadn’t had a flat tire in so long, I had forgotten what one felt like. No spin class. No cell coverage. Awesome. Jog two miles back to the house? I’m already in workout clothes. Meh. So I grabbed the essentials, put the blinkers on, and stuck my thumb out trying to look as helpless as possible. Zoom. Zoom. Zoom (teenager with the bass up high). Zoom. Silence. Too bad I didn’t have the kids with me. People always stop when they see kids on the side of a road, right? Then a big red work truck topped the hill and made a U-turn. I’ve picked up my share of stinky Appalachian Trail hikers off the parkway so it was nice seeing the favor returned. Bless you, Wendell. Hitchhiking. It’s a skill. Too bad the kids weren’t with me to learn it. Wendell dropped me off at the auto repair shop and then I rode back with Josh in the tow truck. Again, too bad the kids weren’t with me. Adam, especially, would have loved this rig. Still a bit traumatized by our deer crash earlier this year, Adam looked

at me later when he noticed the busted tire in the trunk and said, “Did the deer break the tire?” “No, it just burst because it was old,” I explained. “So you have three tires and one is broken?” “I have three tires and the other is a spare,” I said, showing him the left rear tire. “You need four new tires so you don’t crash into a deer,” he told me, with full-on 5 year-old authority. “Absolutely,” I said. Flat tires can be a blessing. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Serenity The wines of Thierry Germain The late-summer sounds of cicadas fill the air and, though mid-summer, I can feel the days changing, quietly shortening. Today there’s a breeze that cuts, like a cool knife, across the afternoon’s moist heat leaving only its sultry warmth to remember it by at night. It prompts another memory: arriving back at Dulles, and walking out through the terminal doors, greeted by the humid embrace of a warm Virginia evening—so different from those delicate mornings in the Loire Valley. Each morning at dawn, in the sleepy town of Chenonceaux, there was always the cooing of morning doves just as the sun rose and the mists still clung to the vineyards. We could walk from the hotel and, in two minutes, stand amidst the châteaux’s very own vineyard. But the vineyard that most captured our imaginations, not to mention our senses, was Theirry Germain’s. At Thierry Germain’s Les Roches Neuves, you’ll find no synthetic fertilizers, just compost. Thierry practices all biodynamic farming on his grapes,

as well as the few tomatoes and beans we spied in his kitchen garden. Then there was the towering cherry under which we stood, happily picking and eating. Thierry is young and vibrant, his enthusiasm contagious, and I could have listened to his philosophy for days. “Mother Earth is the cradle of life. All focus is on this maternal cocoon.” The highpoint of the visit was tasting from the barrel of his 2013 Marginale. Now, you’d have thought the wine would be overly tannic. At least I did, warning the group they would be tasting “potential”, but my stars! It was magical. And elegant. And ever so delicious. We weren’t alone in thinking so, as one of France’s top wine critics had judged this Cabernet Franc the best in all of France, topping even a very famous right bank Bordeaux. The 2013 Marginale won’t be ready for at least another two years, but 2010 is equally stunning. These are tiny production wines and most are snatched by top restaurants in France so very few make it to the U.S. Saumur Champigny “La Marginale” 2010 – One of the great

Cabernet Francs found anywhere in the world, the Marginale is produced from miniscule yields and aged for 18 months in new French oak. Silky, with leather, earth, and dark fruits. “Avoid manipulating the wine and listen to its message,” Thierry advises and brings his natural approach to the Cabernet Franc. Thierry’s way of thinking and treating his vineyard may seem odd to some, but it has evolved over time, and to others it will seem like common sense. “Do not cut the vine’s arms, do not let it bleed. Do not inflict any wounds and do not cause it stress.” $54 L’Insolite 2012 – Made from 80-year-old Chenin Blanc vines then aged in oak. Chenin Blanc is a grape which reaches its greatest expression in France’s Loire Valley, its ninth century birthplace. It’s been called “the world’s most versatile grape variety,” and it’s no surprise that this chameleon, which can be dry, sparkling, off dry, and beautifully sweet (botrytized), is a great favorite for food pairings. The Insolite is dry, creamy and complex. Try to pick out notes of passion fruit, pear and almond. $39

STAUNTON

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

Nick Blanton owns The Split Banana, a gelato lover’s paradise.

GELATO!

WHEN YOU OWN YOUR OWN GELATO SHOP, YOU GET TO INVENT YOUR OWN FLAVORS. STICKY RICE, ANYONE?

Nick Blanton’s favorite flavor of gelato is Sticky Rice, which is flavored with Thai rice and coconut and tastes amazing with Mango sorbet. He invented it. Nick is the owner of The Split Banana on West Beverly in Staunton, a frozen treat shop that makes its own gelato (an Italian dessert made with fresh whole milk and cane sugar) and sorbet (a naturally fat free dessert that contains only fruit, cane sugar, fresh local honey, and water). After graduation from college in 2005 and spending a year teaching English in Japan, he came back home to Staunton knowing he wanted to take a risk. Running businesses is kind of the family business (his mom and sister own the local toy shop Pufferbellies, also in Staunton), but Nick didn’t know exactly what he wanted to sell… until he heard a lot of the Pufferbellies customers asking for the nearest ice cream shop. 10

Blue Ridge LIFE

AUGUST 2014

“A common request of families and tourists was ice cream; it was something Staunton really needed,” said Nick. Turns out, there’s a lot of client overlap between toy stores and ice cream shops. He’d studied economics at UVa so he knew a bit about business, but nothing about ice cream or running a real live one, so he worked with his business partner and former high school classmate Andrew Robertson and started learning by trial and error. Their first major business decision was to go the gelato (and sorbet) route over ice cream.

“The best thing about gelato is that because it’s so simple and because of the way it’s made, it’s a good showcase for fine ingredients,” said Nick. “Since we knew we were going to be using a lot of high-quality local ingredients - like grass-fed milk from local farmers - gelato showcases it.” continued on page 12

continued from page 11

Nick and Andrew got to know each other at Robert E. Lee High School and decided to open The Split Banana when Nick got back from Japan, while Andrew worked in the D.C. area. Nick stayed on location while Andrew continued to work and went on to get his M.B.A., all the while helping with business decisions from a distance. From start to finish, each of The Split Banana’s flavors - which range from the traditional (vanilla) to the super unique (Espresso Biscotto and Highland County Maple) - take about 45 minutes to make. Nick and his crew start with the basic ingredients (milk and sugar for gelato or honey, sugar and water for sorbet, plus the base of the flavor). They mix for 15 minutes, cook for 15 minutes, and then freeze for 15 minutes. The final step is to mix in the uncooked ingredients like the M&Ms in M&M Birthday Cake or the nuts in Butter Pecan.

Some of Nick’s favorite flavors (other than his Sticky Rice invention) all feature fresh and/ or local ingredients. Peanut Butter uses peanut butter from the Virginia Diner, Pistachio uses fresh pistachios from California, and all of the sorbets (including an exciting grapefruit pineapple and a customer-voted no-dairy dark chocolate) use raw local honey from Nelson County. After spending the first few months working 100 hours a week when The Split Banana first opened in 2008, Nick’s glad to be working “normal” hours again, even though the hours sometimes stretch in the hot summer months. Even though it was a lot of hard work and there was a bit of a learning curve, Nick said he’s happy that he decided to open his own restaurant instead of going the chain route. “People like things that are homegrown and we wanted a business we could take pride in,” he said. “Opening a business was a dream I always had, and after seeing the success and the joy that my family were having at their business[, Pufferbellies,] I was inspired.” BRL

A 2014 midyear real estate summary

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Last year, the real estate market ended on several positive notes because more property sold, and they sold at a slightly higher price. I was hoping that the slower sales in first quarter of 2014 could be attributed to inclement weather and that rising temperatures would significantly “warm up” second quarter sales. While a slight increase was noted from 39 sales in Q1 to 44 in Q2, overall midyear sales are down when compared to the first and second half of 2013. There is still an opportunity to rebound because the second half of the year has historically been stronger. Here is a quick market update for Nelson County. Figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Midyear Countywide Overview; 83 residential properties sold in Q1/ Q2 of 2014 which represents a 16% decrease from the same time period

in 2013 when 99 properties sold. Comparing Q1/Q2 of 2014 with Q3/ Q4 of 2013 (with 131 sales), sales are down by 37%. Midyear Statistical Comparison; Q1/Q2 2013 recap: 99 sales, median $222,500, average price $246,495, average price per sq ft $140.06, days on market (DOM) 214. Q1/Q2 2014: 83 sales, median $220,000, average price $260,872, average price per sq ft $135.58, DOM 148. While there have been fewer sales, at a slightly lower price per sq ft, the silver lining is the reduction in days on market. This provides evidence that buyers are paying attention and are quickly “getting off the fence” when properties are priced appropriately for the market conditions. Price is a major motivator or “call to action” for buyers. Sellers need to keep in mind that inventory remains high and that there is still value priced competition. Distressed sales, foreclosure and/or short sale properties,

Marlo Allen

accounted for 11% of all midyear sales in 2013 and again in 2014. Projection: while midyear volume and price figures are down, I would anticipate a brighter showing for the remainder of the year. A glimpse back in time shows that Q3/Q4 will historically outperform Q1/Q2 sales. (Sales Recap for 2012: Q1/Q2 -71, Q3/Q4 -110; 2013: Q1/Q2 -99, Q3/ Q4 -131) Midyear Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 42 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 8 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 33 sales. When comparing Q1/Q2 2014 sales with Q1/Q2 2013 sales, all 3 markets saw a reduction in sales with Stoney Creek realizing the most significant decrease in sales volume of 27%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 62% of all sales on the mountain are

condos. Within the county (nonresort), Afton and Faber each had 9 sales representing 27% of the market for each of these localities. Midyear Land Sales; countywide 32 parcels of land sold in midyear 2014 compared to 30 in midyear 2013. Resort land sales at Wintergreen and Stoney Creek increased, while county sales decreased. In general, land sales reflect a tremendous bargain for buyers. For example, the midyear median at Wintergreen was $35,000. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. The recent indie flick The Immigrant takes place in 1921 and stars Joaquin Phoenix, a “charming but wicked man” who takes advantage of a Polish immigrant after convincing her to work in his Burlesque show. And when writer/director James Gray asked New York City Burlesque performer/producer Run Around Sue if she knew of any performers who could act the part of his dancers, she was quick to name a few. “James Gray, for his movie The Immigrant wanted everything to be super precise historically and so he wanted to have real New York Burlesque dancers play the role of Burlesque dancers which, back then, wasn’t such a great thing to be. So we’re basically the gaggle of girls that Joaquin Phoenix is in charge of in his stage show,” said Boo Boo Darlin,’ a featured extra in the movie, a New York City Burlesque performer, an early leader of the Richmond, Virginia Burlesque scene and – most historically – a Nelson County local better known around these parts as Kendra Lansing. Kendra grew up dancing and performing, but it wasn’t until after graduating with a studio art degree from JMU that she realized Burlesque was in her future.

“I went to a festival, the Capital City Carnival in Northern Virginia, and I saw my first Burlesque shows and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, people do this? I want to do this,’” said Kendra, who soon-after started taking Burlesque classes in D.C. and starting building the Richmond Burlesque community. “I’d obviously seen pictures of women in beautiful costumes, but I didn’t know it was quote-unquote Burlesque or have an idea of what it was.” Now performing up to four shows a week in New York City, Kendra hopes to one day perform full time (these days she’s working at a popular New York restaurant called Prune as she continues to develop her characters and acts), she’s constantly workshopping and getting feedback from friends in the industry like Run Around Sue, who helped teach her the ropes of Burlesque initially and land her the role in The Immigrant. Run Around Sue also helped Kendra ramp up the popularity of Burlesque in Richmond called Varietease. Kendra, who spent a bit of time studying theater in college, loved the idea of mixing her love of performance with her love of creation. She gets to write her own acts, make her own costumes, and create her own characters. continued on page 27

“Burlesque became a great medium for me because it allows me to perform and also to create things like costumes and props, so it kind of blends two things that I’ve really been interested in doing into one,” she said, adding that she loves the “old-timey-ness” and the vintage qualities Burlesque has to offer. “The magic of all the costuming and the old-school, tongue-in-cheek comedy is really exciting to me.” But as a natural-born performer, her success on stage is no surprise to long-time friend Hayley Osborne (the very same who shoots photos for this magazine). “She’s just a very charismatic person, so people want to be around her,” said Hayley. “It’s always been that way.” Kendra started dancing as a little girl and by the time she was in middle school, the Nelson County High School drama teacher gave her a small speaking roll in the high school one act. “From there, I just really developed an interest in drama,” said Kendra, who played Kate in Kiss Me Kate her senior year. “So I feel like the Nelson County Theater Department is what got me interested in performing. “She’s so incredibly talented,” said Hayley, who has been friends with Kendra since they were just toddlers. “It’s exciting to watch her get better and better. I’m sure she’ll be an international star before we know it.” BRL

Meeting a real-life mermaid is a fantasy for most little girls (and maybe even the boys), but eighteen year old Hannah Burgess took her dream one step further, and made becoming a mermaid a reality. “I have been a mermaid at heart my whole life, but I have been a performing and professional mermaid for about a year now,” says the Charlottesville native. “My mermaid name that I use at events is Nova Sirène the Virginia Mermaid.” Hannah’s hobby may seem unique for some naïve nomads – guilty – but apparently she’s just a little fish in a big ol’ pond full of mer-people. “I discovered the mermaid community online last summer actually, and before that I didn’t know it was a hobby or career that people did, but as soon as I discovered it, I fell in love and decided it was something that I really wanted to do,” Hannah explains. Since her underwater inception, Hannah’s been making quite the splash amongst the guild. “I have several really good mermaid friends that live in Florida that I met at a mermaid convention in North Carolina. I also have two really good mermaid friends and we’re actually part of a tank show called, “The Real Mermaids”. It’s us three and we have a 550 gallon tank that we perform in at festivals and other events.” With legends of the mermaid floating around for centuries, from Homer’s wicked and wonderful encounters with the sirens to Disney’s red-headed heroine, variations of the tails are plentiful.

“There’s sort of the evil siren mermaid that people know, but that’s not very marketable, people don’t want to hire that kind of mermaid for an event. And a lot of people say, ‘Don’t mermaids lure people to their death’ but I just say that’s a different part of the family,” tells Hannah. “Also that’s just not really the type of person that I am at heart. I love children and I love nature and magic and I just decided that I would rather be a happy and friendly mermaid rather than an evil one.” With spectators ranging in all ages and degrees of the imagination, Hannah has really honed in on how to captivate the entire audience. “Some people are skeptical at first, but after I explain to them what I do and how it kind of creates magic for children and for people who love the ocean, then they’re really accepting,” says Hannah. “Children are absolutely amazed by it, they still believe in magic and fantasy, and that’s kind of what made me do it, I like creating the magic for people”. Comparable to Glenda the Good Witch from Wizard of Oz, this aquatic equivalent is motivated and currently caught in a stream of success. “When I’m not a mermaid I’m a full-time student at James Madison University, and it’s really great because going to college helped me develop this whole hobby. And since it’s a much bigger pool of people, they’re more accepting of this hobby,” states Hannah. “I’ve come a long way in this year. My goal last year was to have a nice tail, have a fan base, have mermaid friends and be involved in the community, and now that I’ve reached that goal I’m trying to think of new things.” BRL

LAZY DAYS

Central Virginia is no stranger to mid-summer festivals filled with wine, laughter, face painting, live music, local food vendors and monkeys. Wait. Monkeys? While most other local festivals feature plenty of wine and sun, there’s only one that features an annual visit by a group of baby monkeys. Before planting any vines, hosting and festivals or offering any tastings, John Fitzhugh and his father (along with the rest of the family) owned and operated another farm in Midlothian, where most of them still live. And that farm to this day is a home to exotic animals like those monkeys, not to mention wallabies and zebras or the llamas featured on the label of Lazy Days Winery’s new peach wine. “We have people who have been coming to the [Summer Solstice] festival for all six years and get really excited,” said John, about the winery’s annual mid-summer festival that features all of the things you’d expect… including monkeys … and happens rain or shine. “This year we had a lot more rain than shine, but since our facility was the old Central Virginia Live Cattle Auction House, we have a 2-acre under-cover pavilion.” The pavilion also acts as a great place to have concerts, weddings, or (coming up this fall) the HalloWINE Music & Wine Festival. John, who says his family hasn’t done much farming since his great-grandparents’ apple orchards, says he’s been pleasantly surprised by the growing Virginia wine community. “When we planted [in 2007] I think there were under 100 wineries and now there are over 250 Virginia wineries,” he said. “And the support we have from the state of Virginia and the support we have from other wineries it’s amazing; it’s everyone working together. It’s a true family industry.” BRL

Beech Grove Salon 434-361-1810

910 Beech Grove Rd (Rt. 664) Roseland, VA

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

A frequent question that I address with my team while doing a landscape job is ‘what are we going to do with the water’ (referring to grades, slopes and hardscapes and how a heavy rain may impact a residence or part of the landscape). Unfortunately for me, a contractor that worked on my house’s exterior ten years ago did not correctly answer that question from a carpenter’s perspective and the end result was not pretty - rotten wood in and around poorly flashed roof lines and gutters that I am currently busy fixing and replacing. Here is a checklist/maintenance list for annual house and landscape chores that will greatly extend the life of your structures and ultimately reduce out of pocket expenses that largely could have been prevented. No single factor impacts more landscapes than water. Even with a herd of deer and groundhogs lurking in the shadows of your landscape, water damage can make a herbivore’s appetite look minimal – in particular when it comes to damage to structures, retaining walls and driveways. If you are looking to cut costs, explore other ways aside from hiring the best contractor when it comes to the exterior of structures or grading. One poorly flashed house can turn a weekend painting project into a week long affair before the brush even touches the wood, wrecking both your budget and weekend in one swoop. Trust me, I found this out firsthand … Tree limbs and their proximity to your home must continually be examined and pruned where necessary. Limbs should not be allowed to touch the structure for a number of reasons – all of which are bad. Insects use trees and other bushes that are touching the structure as a launch pad to your home. Plants that are close to a structure also act to raise the humidity in that particular area which leads to mold, mildew and even algae

on the structure – both of which can ultimately lead to rot. Annual treatments of Jomax and Clorox applied to the siding of the structure will aid in preventing/curing this. Trees and bushes that continually rub on a structure also can lead to a wound on the house that will eventually lead to rot or allow an insect entry to the interior. The best answer is to let your house breathe and give it some elbow room. After your roof and proper flashing, gutters are your next line of defense with the home in your war with water. Gutters allow you to catch and direct water where you want it to go instead of where it wants to go. Keep your gutters clear of debris and inspect them for wear – especially in corners and where the roof line meets the gutter. Equally important are downspouts which routinely need to be checked for blockage. Recently a client called and said that her gutter was not working correctly and needed us to fix it. Upon inspection, the gutter was fine but the 4 inch pipe that connects onto the downspout was so full of boxwood roots that nothing else could come through. Therefore it is not enough that your gutter is clear, but that the whole system of catching water, channeling it down to a pipe and then properly allowing it to exit the property away from the structures is a not negotiable. Catching a failing gutter can literally be the difference in a Vegas vacation and a night at the pool hall. A bucket of high-end paint and a tube of exterior acrylic caulk in the hands of the right person are worth their weight in gold. Both of these items should be kept in stock to take care of accidents and normal wear and tear of the structure. The bottom-line is that bare or worn wood should never come in contact with Mother Nature – she will win every time.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, This time of year, I get excited about walking and hiking, but I hate the blisters I sometimes get on my heels! What can I do? It’s a bummer isn’t it? You’ve made up your mind to exercise and gone out to get a new pair of boots or shoes, and on your first trek you start to feel that familiar “hot spot” forming on your heel. What now!? Blisters develop on the feet when the shoe essentially sticks to the outer layer of skin and causes it to move against the inner layer of skin. This results in the two layers, which should be stuck together, separating. That hurts! The space created by the separation fills with fluid, and presto! We have a blister. So, we need to prevent the shoe from sticking to the outer layer of skin. The first line of defense is buying well fitting shoes. Then, break in the shoes or boots slowly. Take short walks in them at first, or wear them around the house for a while before you start putting in the miles. It is also extremely important to keep

your feet dry. Sweaty or wet feet allow the shoe and outer layer of skin to stick together, and you know what happens next. Foot powder may be needed for those with sweaty feet. Double layers of socks can also help by allowing the shoe and outer sock to move against the inner sock instead of your foot. Just make sure you use a thin inner sock. At the first sign of a blister, such as the feeling of rubbing or warmth on the heel, get out your trusty duct tape. Tape over the spot that is starting to hurt and you will have made it nearly impossible for your shoe to stick to that outer layer of skin. If you do end up with a blister, keep it clean and treat it like any other skin wound, and switch to an old broken in pair of shoes for a while. Hopefully these ideas will help you enjoy blister free walking this summer!

Overtraining Syndrome For most of us, overtraining is not the issue. However, I do see Overtraining Syndrome in folks who are starting an exercise program and who are very enthusiastic initially. Or others who are training for an event such as a marathon. It’s hard to predict over training because everyone responds differently to exercise. Some common symptoms of overtraining are a washed out feeling or lack of energy, general aches, pain in muscles and joints, insomnia, headaches, increased colds, decreased training capacity, irritability, depression, loss of enthusiasm for the sport, decreased appetite, increased injuries and a compulsive need to exercise. A simple method to track whether you are overtraining or not is to track your resting heart rate each morning. Any significant increase from the norm may mean that you are not fully recovered. Tracking your Perceived Rate of Exertion is another method. If there is a marked increase, that may be a sign. Wearing a heart rate

monitor while exercising can also be helpful to ensure that you are exercising at the optimal intensity. Keep a Training log of your workouts, heart rates and rate of perceived rate of exertion to monitor your training and notice any symptoms. Recovery strategies from overtraining include: rest; this is the most beneficial treatment. Take a few days off. Proper hydration and nutrition after workouts which may mean altering your diet. Take time for a sports massage. And try cross training (doing a different mode of exercise) to stimulate other muscles and improve your mental fatique. It is important to pay attention to how you are feeling and to understand how your body operates optimally. It is always harder to recover from injuries than to prevent them.
