thepublishers Finally. Ever since Peyton was in diapers, she’s been perfectly content plopping herself down on a beach blanket and building pretty little sand castles. That stuff me and Adam do in the water – aquatic wrestling? – was not for her. Until this summer. All of a sudden, it was Peyton wanting to play in the water. Albeit, she wasn’t thrilled about getting her hair wet, she insisted on heading out a good three times or so a day, roughly after each meal. “Mummy, get the big kick board!” Not all kick boards are made for kicking. This particular one we found at the giveaway shed. Decorated with the head of a shark flashing its large bloody teeth and the words “Bite Me,” I thought it was the wonderfully obnoxious, most politically incorrect beach accessory one would take on a family vacation. “Now mummy, we must make melting cakes for daddy.” Melting cakes. For those of you who haven’t made them, you patty out clumps of sand on your “Bite Me” kick board and sprinkle different colored chips (pebbles) on them. The next step – and this is very important – you wake up a snooz-

ing daddy from the beach chair and tell him the melting cakes are almost ready. It is then, when he accidentally knocks some sand into his drink, that you pour water from your yellow watering can all over the beautiful cakes and watch them melt into a muddy mess. “Wow!” Tommy would say. “That is great! Thank you. Thank you so much!” Within minutes, the boys were launching the kayak. Sometimes you have to do that when the women are fussing about fixing melting cakes. About an hour later, the kids were starving but we were too pooped to cook them a real meal (or drive somewhere where you pay someone to do that). So we gave them a bag of we-are-on-holiday Cheetos to share. It’s frankenfood, we know. Bite me. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford AUGUST 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Roman Holiday “I return link by link along the iron chains of memory to the city which we inhabited so briefly together.” –Justine, The Alexandria Quartet In The Alexandria Quartet, Durrell writes, “When you are in love with one of its inhabitants, a city can become a world.” He was speaking of Alexandria, a city I visited only once and only because of that particular novel. If a city is what it does to you, so too, a great book is what it does to you, and the Quartet shaped my life for years to come. But last month, the city was not Alexandria, but rather Rome, a city historically allied closely with Alexandria. A city is what it does to you, but perhaps even more, a city is what you give to it. And a small group of us gave our all and our hearts not only to Rome but to Florence, Cinque Terre and to much of Italy. Perhaps a few hearts were even left over there. The Italians call it il dolce far niente, “the sweetness of doing nothing.” Americans call it “hanging

out” or “vegging”; young Americans say, “chilling.” Social scientists and sports participants speak of the “flow experience” or “expanded present.” And Buddhists and the rest of us try to live in the moment. Travel helps us with this because, away from routines and the known, we see with new eyes—or perhaps old eyes seeing anew. Now back to a routine, albeit a beloved routine, the taste of Italy still lingers, the smiling face of its people, even its pasta, still vibrant. Yet for all its breathtaking art, and there is much, the greatest art may well be the art of being happy and of making other people happy, something at which the Italians excel. Therefore, in an attempt to embrace the spirit of Italy while back in Virginia, let’s gather in gratitude and toast with a few Italian favourites. Valdinera “Chiaro di Luna” Nebbiolo Rosato,(organic) - This rosé from Piedmont stole my heart. It has an uncanny way of being both delicate and meaty, fruity yet mineral-driven. And there is an ever so slight spritz to it too, which is just

right on a hot day. Made from 100 % pink Nebbiolo grapes; not red but pink. And the beautiful Italian name, “Chiaro di Luna? Moonlight! Pair with Trout baked with fresh herbs, free-range chicken with parsley and lemon, steamed mussels in Thai curry coconut milk. 16.99 Now if you think only monks can make wine, time to check out the nuns of Monastero Suore Cistercensi in Lazio. In this peaceful abbey, eighty women of the Cistercian order work vineyards, orchards and gardens organically. For aesthetic reasons more than religious ones, I have always loved the Cistercians who, believing in purity through austerity, built their abbeys or monasteries in some of the most remote, yet also some of the most beautiful, places I know. Rusticum - A blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia, Verdicchio and Grechetto. The juice is left to ferment on the lees for a period, extracting all of the flavors, colors and textures of its fruit. The result is a wine of deep golden color and penetrating minerality with hints of herbs, particularly anise, and wild flowers.$29

BOTTLED WITH LOVE First came the kombucha. Then came the business. Then the baby.

Peter Roderick and Kelsey Hickman use the spearmint, peppermint and chocolate mint grown in their garden to infuse their kombucha with fresh flavors.

continued from page 9

Give a boy some fermented tea, and he’ll drink for a day. Teach a boy to brew kombucha, and he’ll change his life. Or so it went with Peter Roderick of Mountain Culture Kombucha. “I need something that’s hard to figure out and has plenty of problems to solve, and having a business definitely gives you plenty of that. And I really enjoy working for myself,” said Peter, who runs Mountain Culture Kombucha with Kelsey Hickman, his partner in both business and life, and their 11 month old son, Oliver. Peter remembers the first bottle of kombucha he ever drank, and he wasn’t thrilled about it at the time. “It was really kind of forced on me by my mom when I was about 12. She just handed me a bottle and said ‘You’re drinking this whether you like it or not,’” he remembers. “It was definitely a little bit weird at first but I started liking it halfway through the first bottle I drank.” The taste definitely grew on him and by the time he was out on his own (and paying for his own groceries), he was drinking so much kombucha that he decided to figure out how to make his own. “I really fell in love with the science of brewing,” said 10

AUGUST 2015

Peter, who started brewing a few years before he met Kelsey and they started their business. “I love brewing. I love learning more about it, especially kombucha because it’s such a new industry and there’s so much to be learned. I enjoy being part of the Wild West frontier for figuring out more and more about it and how it’s all going to work long term.” Though the idea of kombucha is old at heart (it is thought to have originated in China about 5,000 years ago), it only came to North America in the 1990s and didn’t gain popularity in the U.S. until the last few years. Today, the fermented tea’s popularity is growing quickly and can be found in most grocery stores. Peter and Kelsey both grew up in the Charlottesville area but didn’t meet until a few years before launching their company in 2012 (originally as Nugget’s Raw Kombucha but recently rebranded to Mountain Culture). Their goal was simple: to share their love of the drink (and brewing it) with their friends and family. They use pure mountain water, fair trade tea, raw sugar, and natural flavors to craft refreshing, flavorful brews that they’re proud to sell. Appalachian Harvest, Sumatra Sunrise, and Citra Hops are a few of their flavors. continued on page 12

continued from page 11

“We really pride ourselves on fermenting out a lot of the sugars that we’ve used so you end up with a bit dryer [of a drink] than most commercial kombuchas,” he explained, adding that they grow their own flavors (like mint or fruit) whenever feasible. “We really push it right to the edge of sour and you know it’s the real stuff and not some fizzy sugar water.” At first, Peter was just tinkering with his recipes and sharing his product with friends and family. Then they started making more and bartering with locals. And then that snowballed to where people would pay a monthly fee to get a six pack. Finally, the couple started selling their product at the Charlottesville Farmers Market three years ago and, while they’re still there just about every week, Mountain Culture Kombucha can now be found in supermarkets all over the commonwealth. “We’re now in about 55 stores around Virginia, a few Whole Foods but mostly independent stores. We’ve more than doubled our volume each of the three years we’ve been in business,” said Peter (who used to job hop between landscaping in summer and working at ski resorts in the winter) proudly. “We definitely joke all the time that we didn’t’ know what we were getting into; it’s certainly been a lot of work but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Managing the company’s growth (along with their growing family) has been one of the biggest challenges they’ve faced to date, but Peter says they’re confident that Mountain Culture Kombucha will grow quickly enough to be successful but slowly enough to be reasonable. And despite the challenges, they’ve both really loved becoming further embedded into the kombucha world. “Kombucha is a culture itself,” said Peter. “We’re also from the mountains and this is our culture - the mountains, the people, the food. We feel like it embodies both who we are, the area we’re in and what it represents, and what the kombucha itself is.” BRL

Though Susan B. Viemeister’s mode of creativity has changed throughout the years, the one element she says she is perpetually drawn has always been light.

“I love light. That’s always something that’s caught my eye. When I was in black and white photography as an art form, light is everything. You really can’t take a photograph without light so light has always been attractive to me. How light defines a scene and gives the scene a certain character or brings out certain colors in the scene’s world. So that’s the first thing that will attract my attention.” Even from a young age, Susan was drawn to art. “I’ve been drawing all my life and I’ve been involved in art all my life. And I was drawing from a young age and my grandmother gave me my first set of oil paints when I was in third grade,” she said. Oils are what Susan tends to paint with and the majority of her pieces are started — if not painted in full — in plein air (or painted outdoors while looking at the subject). “Because I’m still working full time, I paint where I can find the time and make the time in my life. Usually winter is a slower time for me to paint but this winter I was actually pretty busy. I took a long weekend in May and spent the whole weekend painting.” At a recent show at the Art Box in Crozet, Susan, who works full time as a landscape designer based in Piney River, showcased many of her landscape pieces that she’s been working on for the last three years, including some that weer just weeks old. Susan said she loves showing her work and most of her paintings are absolutely for sale, but the act of painting is what she loves. “The process is very important to me,” she said. “I love making that translation of what I see and what I’m trying to express.” BRL

230 Dogwood Lane Amazing new construction at Winterhaven, with Almost 2 acres of seasonal mountain views. Approximately 3,300 sq feet, including heated 2 car garage. Two family rooms with gas log fireplaces, 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, large deck. Hickory floors and cabinets. Energy efficient home with R values up to R-50. Fifty year roof, smart siding, energy star windows, insulated garage door. High end finishes, including granite, tile, and hickory floors.

This summer, Molly Ellen and Natalie Elaine Lynch opened Lotsa Lemons on the corner of Front and Main in Lovingston. For $0.50 a cup, you get to taste their classic lemonade recipe of Country Time complete with lemon slices. Five-year-old Natalie serves the beverages from a dispenser as eight-year-old Molly practices some arithmetic running her fire engine red cash register. But their purpose is far greater than making a little money while honing addition and subtraction skills. The sisters from Staunton donate all of their earnings to the Nelson County Pantry, perched in the Lovingston Gap right by St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Molly and Natalie are parishioners there, and they spend many of their summer days in Lovingston with their grandmother, Mary Ellen “Woody” Lynch, who lives on Front Street. She helps the girls set up their lemonade stand a block away from her home. The sisters are wise beyond their years. I asked Molly about their business plan, and with a grasp of enunciation and grammar that would make any adult sit up and listen, she was quick to tell me the Gospel Truth.

“I came up with this idea last year. I thought . . . Well nobody should have to be hungry. But there are still lots of people suffering.”

This year marked the girls’ second summer behind the lemonade stand, and they have plans to do it again next year. “We’ve raised about a hundred dollars so far,” Molly said. A hundred bucks can buy a lot of food. Smiling entrepreneurs, Molly and Natalie have taken care of some thirsty lawyers and legal assistants on the street this summer, and they were able to buy groceries for a family in need. Their faith, hope, and charity make them an example for us all. And that Mary sure is a saint for teaching them so much as they enjoy a summer filled with swimming and ‘lotsa’ lemonade. BRL

In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the glare just a little bit, adding our 3M™ window tinting to your current windows will give you more crisp high definition views. Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. In addition, these rays also cause serious harm to your skin and eyes. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Our 3M™ window tinting is a sun filter. We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They work well for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They filter 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. This new tinting is not dark, won’t bubble or fade, and will literally improve the quality of your views. Installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting, they come with a lifetime warranty. Gaining Momentum

athome

A 2015 midyear real estate summary for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

The Nelson County real estate market is gaining some momentum in sales. When reviewing the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors 2015 2nd Quarter Market Report which compared Q2 2015 with Q2 2014, Nelson was one of two counties noted as “leading the pack” in terms of sales gain with a 24.4% increase. While there are some positive occurrences, there are also some indicators of a market still struggling to rebound. Here is a broader midyear overview. Figures were pulled from the CAAR Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Midyear Countywide Overview; 107 residential properties sold in Q1/ Q2 of 2015 which represents a 26% increase from the same midyear time period in 2014 when 85 properties sold. Midyear Statistical Comparison; Q1/Q2 2014 recap: 85 sales, median $220,000, average price $257,050, average price per sq ft $133.69, days on market (DOM) 155. Q1/Q2

2015: 107 sales, median $162,000, average price $227,701, average price per sq ft $136.33, DOM 213. Sales and average price per sq ft increased from Q1/Q2 in 2014 to 2015, but the median and average price dropped. The lower median may reflect competitive pricing and the greater demand for value properties to include distressed and low point of entry sales opening opportunities to those who at one time could not afford a first or second home purchase. The higher average price per sq ft may be indicative of buyers who have the financial ability to purchase based on preferences, rather than just value. For example, many of the sold properties that carried a higher price per sq ft were properties with large acreage, superior features, or ones that triggered an emotional connection as a result of panoramic mountain views, water/river frontage, or ski front. The increase of days on market is a reminder to price properties appropriately at the

Marlo Allen

time of listing! Projection: I don’t anticipate a quick recovery, but I do think Nelson will see some “slow and steady” market improvements. A glimpse back in time shows that Q3/ Q4 will historically outperform Q1/ Q2 sales. (Sales recap: 2012: Q1/Q2 -71, Q3/Q4 -110; 2013: Q1/Q2 -99, Q3/Q4 -131; 2014: Q1/Q2 -85, Q3/ Q4 -107) Call me an optimist, but I would also anticipate the average price and median to rise above the current midyear figures. (Year end median recap: 2012 - 227,900; 2013 245,950; 2014 - 236,875) Midyear Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 60 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 7 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 40 sales. When comparing Q1/Q2 2015 sales with Q1/Q2 2014 sales, 2 of the 3 markets showed an increase in sales; Wintergreen had a 43% increase and the county had a 14% increase. Stoney Creek sales

decreased by 13%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen and the distribution of sales; 70% of all sales on the mountain were condos. Within the county (non-resort), Shipman had the greatest number of sales (8) representing 20% of the market for non-resort localities. Midyear Land Sales; Countywide 27 parcels of land sold in midyear 2015 compared to 34 in midyear 2014. County (non-resort) sales increased 13%, while land sales decreased 55% in Wintergreen and 38% in Stoney Creek. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. ROADSHOW DETOUR When it comes to appraising antiques, Ken Farmer knows his stuff.

28

Blue Ridge LIFE

AUGUST 2015

A few years ago, Ken Farmer, an appraiser for the PBS show Antiques Road Show had to tell a poor woman that she’d been duped into paying a few thousand dollars for an “authentic, vintage Vampire Killing Kit” at an auction in New Orleans and that such a thing had never existed. “I remember weird stuff like that as much as I do the expensive stuff,” said Ken. But he also remembers who his friends are. When not working with Road Show, Ken is a fine arts appraiser and consultant and spent several years as a partner in an auction house in

Charlottesville, where he got to know Rick and Sarah Ovenshire (owners of the Covesville Store and Tuckahoe Antiques). “The thing that I was amazed by them is they’re so disciplined in the way they bid and they don’t mark stuff up ridiculously when they get back to the shop,” he said. “And they’re cool people; I just really like ‘em.” So when it came time for the Ovenshires to plan an event as part of the Jefferson Heritage Summer Festival, asking Ken to be involved was a no-brainer — as was his answer. continued on page 30

continued from page 29

“Any time I can look at antiques and hang out with friends and drink wine it’s a good thing,” said Ken.

Rick said the event had a pretty good turnout with about 4050 people in the store each of the two hours Ken was appraising and during the wine tasting before and after. Following the main event, Ken and friend of the shop (better known as a Virginia historian) Bill Kelso stuck around to play a little music. Rick said the day was everything an event that’s part of the Jefferson Heritage Summer Festival should be. “We figured Jefferson was a big fan of both antiques and wine!” he said. For about two hours, Ken invited locals to bring in their antiquities of unknown value for him to appraise, a la Antiques Road Show. Rick said that there was a lot of artwork — some valuable (one was appraised for $7,000!), some less so — and a few interesting pieces of silver including a pair of silver-plated chalices and a tole tray Ken appraised for about $1,000. The group didn’t see anything quite as rare as the English paining Ken saw a few years ago valued at about $550,000 or (thankfully) anything quite as heartbreaking as the Louisiana Vampire Killing Kit, but they all got to look at antiques and hang out with friends and drink wine. And that’s a good thing. BRL

A caboose chugs to its final stop in Piney River Ted Hughes fixes things. Born and raised and still living and working in Massies Mill, he owns Chalk Level Buggy Works and is known for restoring horse-drawn carriages and sleighs and antique farm equipment. So when Steven Martin, an Amherst Lawyer who had worked with Ted in the past, asked him to take a look at an original Caboose from the Virginia Railroad built in 1915, he jumped at the chance. Plus — Virginia railroading is in his blood. “I was raised at Massies Mill and the Virginia Blue Ridge terminated there every day when I was a kid,” said Ted. “One of the engineers there was my grandfathers brother and the other one was my grandmothers brother. I’ve been around it all my life.” Steve and his wife, Popie, have dedicated almost 20 years of their lives to restoring the Virginia Blue Ridge Trail. When Popie passed away in February, Steve knew it was even more important to set their legacy in stone. Since their farm is right in the middle of the trail, they had always talked about putting a caboose at the old Piney River Depot and this spring Steve got to work finding one. continued on page 34

“We’d been looking for a caboose for a long time. I’d been looking online but they all either were in terrible condition or really expensive. Not only do cabooses cost several thousand up to $50,000, but then you have to spend a fair amount moving them,” he said. Years and years turned up nothing and then all of the sudden: jackpot. “I just saw this caboose sitting in Rapidan and I realized it was the very caboose that the Virginia Railroad used over the years.” Just 90 minutes up the road, the drive was an easy one to make and when Ted gave him the go-ahead, Steve worked with the county to secure funding to purchase the caboose and start making renovations. There is still money to be raised, but the caboose is now sitting happily in Piney River. And — to Ted’s great pleasure — something old will be saved from the salvage yard.

“I hate to see these old characters and this old stuff just go down to be thrown away and something new put in its place,” Ted said.

Is your child’s marriage a little shaky? Does he/she have creditor issues? Do you have a piece of property that you would like to stay in the family? When considering how to leave assets to your beneficiaries, you may want to consider leaving it to them in trust. There are two basic ways a beneficiary can receive assets from your estate: outright or in trust. In outright distributions, the asset(s) are simply retitled in the name of the beneficiary with no further oversight, parameters, or protections. Often, a check is simply cut in the name of the beneficiary and the beneficiary can then do whatever he/she likes with it. In Virginia, we have an additional concern: Virginia has a unique legal structure which allows real property to “drop like a rock” through an estate, allowing real property to pass outright to beneficiaries immediately upon death of the landowner. Without proper planning, this structure can create substantial problems among beneficiaries. Outright inheritance provides no protection for beneficiaries from their creditors, lawsuits, or divorce. Alternatively, through a well drafted estate plan, you can direct that your beneficiaries receive an inheritance in trust. In this arrangement, upon your passing, the assets are initially titled in the name of the trust and not in the name of the beneficiary. The trust then directs distributions as you have designed, based on your particular goals and objectives. If you know that one or more of your beneficiaries is facing creditor issues, a likely divorce, or other legal issues, a trust can give you confidence that those assets will be safe from these sorts of claims. Each trust can be specifically designed to suit the needs and goals of your family. For example, a trust can be designed to allow your children to inherit a certain piece of real property and at their death can be further directed to stay in the family, instead of passing to a son-in-law or daughter-in-law. Planning for generations! For younger beneficiaries, you may create a trust allowing staggered distributions to occur over time, such as in thirds at various ages of the beneficiary, i.e. 1/3 at age 25, 30, and 35. More commonly, trusts are designed so that each beneficiary is given their own trust after your death. The trust assets are divided into as many subtrusts as there are beneficiaries (in much the same fashion as would occur in the absence of a trust). Then each beneficiary can be given some or all control of the management and distributions of their own subtrust when they reach a certain age. However, because of the trust, the beneficiary may have some very significant asset protection, depending on the particular trust design. Trusts can be designed in a myriad of ways, giving great flexibility in design and implementation. Consider leaving assets in trust to your beneficiaries, speak with an estate planning attorney to find out how!

Nelson County Supervisor Tommy Harvey, property owner Bud Owner, and builder Bruce Wachtel, chat at the top of what used to be a popular scenic overlook into the Rockfish Valley. Chad Sale of Amherst, Danny Ferguson of Bryant, and Arthur Howard Dixon of Madison Heights make up part of the clearing team that will restore the overlook (at right). To volunteer, email Tommy at harveyasc@gmail.com, or attend an organizational meeting August 26 at 6:00 pm at the Rockfish Valley Fire Department in Afton.

OVERLOOKED POTENTIAL Afton’s storied scenic wayside gets a much-needed face lift Before the recent agritourism boom in Central Virginia, there were still quite a few sites to be seen in the Blue Ridge Mountains. And before I-64 gave drivers a quickshot through town, Rte. 250 was the fastest — and most beautiful — way to get from Charlottesvile to Staunton. And at the top of the mountain in Afton — right where I-64, Rte. 250, and the Blue Ridge Parkway intersect — there once was an overlook that had one helluva view. “We want to showcase the county and there’s no better place to do that than right here,” said Tommy Harvey, of Afton, who has been on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors for 30 years. “I can remember that overlook as a youngster and it was a beautiful place.” After years of disuse, the overlook became overgrown and potentially unsafe, but now with the help of some dedicated volunteers and the support of both the landowner (Bud Carter) and the county, Tommy is hoping to change all that. Bruce Wachtel, also of Afton, lives right below the overlook and is helping organize the volunteers re-making it a place that both tourists and locals can enjoy. “We have a county that’s interesting and worth visiting and that we’re proud of and here it is,” he said. “I think most people that I know in Nelson County really take a lot of pride in the fact that we live in such a beautiful place and having that overlook restored to what it was, I think that is a source of pride for the whole county.” BRL

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

Adventures by Mountain Bike Once again, we cross paths… Fascinating how time flies these days. If you blink, you might miss something. That’s okay, if you are doing a 100 mile mountain bike race… By the time you read this, you will have only a few weeks to train for one of the most exciting Mountain Bike Races in Virginia: The Shenandoah Mountain 100. The 100 does not mean feet or kilometers but miles. That’s right and on a mountain bike. This race/event is an adventure in itself. Over 600 mountain bikers from all over the country, if not the world, will descend on the George Washington National Forest near Todd Lake at a place called Stokesville. Some will be in hopes of winning. Others will be to, what some marathoners called a life accomplishment, finish. Whichever you are, 100 miles on a mountain bike with approximately 13,000 feet of climbing, this will be the adventure of a lifetime for some.

The first time I did this race in 2004, I had absolutely no idea what I was in for except a ton of pain. When you look at the map, it’s an odd looking circle around the Todd Lake area with six aid stations placed perfectly through the course. Six major climbs sit between you and your goal, the finish line. It’s a mini Tour de France for mountain bikes with big ups and downs along the way. Race day begins with a ringing of the gong over the PA around 5 am. Campers/Racers begin to shake the tents, make breakfast and coffee, put on clothes, say prayers, whatever the ritual. You start to hear pedals clicking, wheels spinning and riders making their way to the start area. Everyone lines up by their expected race time finish, and for a 100 miler, some really have to think about this one. At 6:30 am, the herd begins the procession out of Stokesville only to be returning later as changed individuals.

This procession is more than 600 riders deep. All together for the first few miles on the road, everyone is chatting, thinking strategy, thinking what have I gotten into? Strategy ... On so many levels, strategy involves strength, nutrition and mental fortitude. You have six major climbs, six aid stations, trail/road/gravel terrain and 100 miles to the finish. You are given two drop bags that will go to whichever aid stations you want and there are time cutoffs. The main cutoffs are arriving at aid station #5 by 4:30 pm (after 4:30, you have to take your lights) and the other is 6 pm…. After 6 pm, you are out of the race and receive a ride back to the finish. Reason: if it has taken you 12 hours to go 75 miles, for your safety, you are done. Over the last 10 years, I have participated in this race five times. Some of my main focuses have been to travel/race light. I do not use a backpack but two water bottles and fuel in

my jersey pockets and restock at each aid station. Every time it has been a unique adventure with some many stories from bonking to seven hours in the rain to helping a friend to the finish. The Shenandoah Mountain 100 is an epic event and very well run. But the adventure is up to you! This race will be happening Labor Day Weekend. If you are in the area and intrigued by this race, head on up and volunteer to help one of their Aid Stations. It’s a great way to see the event, the athletes and get a feel for the energy that is the SM100. Planning and training for this event starts months in advance. Our friends over at Rockfish Gap Outfitters can help set you in the right direction with some great gear and bikes. So if you are a mountain biker with a sense of adventure, the SM100 is one that should be on the list of life accomplishments! Good luck with your next adventure! #EmbraceTheAdventure

AUGUST 2015

A Spoon Full of Sugar Julie Andrew’s iconic fictional character, Mary Poppins coined a phrase that most of us have either heard or recited to another: “A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.” The underlying theme is that in every task that you set out to do, there must be an associated element of fun to make the chore more pleasant. Yard work for most can be a real pill that somehow gets stuck in our throat – right between the, “I really don’t know what I am doing” muscle and the, “all of this is just overwhelming to me” membrane. For that reason, it becomes more of a chore that often times leaves us more frustrated than fulfilled. A sense of accomplishment and achieving beauty is the Achilles heal of the next weekend project and some form of sugar is essential. Choose blooming plants that consistently, well, bloom. Umm, okay, I know that this comment may reciprocate a, “What the hell does he think they will do” response but blooming plants are not all made the same. For example, paniculata and arborescens hydrangeas all but guarantee blooms where most macrophylla hydrangeas are drop-dead gorgeous at the check-out counter and will never again regain check-out counter status. Regarding the check-out counter, avoid like the plague the impulse buy at the garden center simply based on shelf appeal. Trust me, the nursery knows how to get that plant adorned like a bride for a groom – even to the extent of a specific date in time where the plant just begins to bud and bloom on the day it arrives on the garden center shelf. Yes, they are that good. Research and online reviews will consistently yield a better experience than that garden center knee-jerk reaction. Simplify your landscape. More often than not, my clients and even designers/architects want to flex their plant knowledge muscles and incor-

porate 45 species where 15 species with some pockets of color would have been MUCH more appealing. Single ‘threads’ of low, dwarf and creeping evergreens attached to an “S” curved walk can carry the entrance for 365 days of the year and look awesome. Sprinkle in some pockets of spring annuals in this same area and your landscape will jump. Attached to the outside of this is, again, that long flowing landscape curve neighboring the grass that ebb and flows peacefully like a rolling wave out in the ocean. Good flowing lines are essential to a noteworthy landscape. Don’t jump on the new just because it is, well, new. New species are the lifeblood of the nursery industry. Each year literally hundreds of new cultivars are introduced that claim to be the fountain of youth to your landscape while secretly they are closer to a shot of arsenic wrapped in a flower chalice. Annuals and some trees are typically a relatively safe jump but shrubs and perennials need time for the uninformed public to test and try. Yes, some will be the newly crowned shrubs that will be the talk of the next party at your home but most will be the newest ‘hardy’ gardenia that just never kept it’s part of the bargain. Use hardscapes to anchor down an area and then build out from that. For example, a 30-inch statue of St. Francis, placed in a shady area, wrapped with hellebore, variegated Solomon seal and ferns adds form and a focal point to an otherwise boring area of just greenery. Or a birdhouse on a 8 foot post in the full sun, wrapped with copper wire and decorated with a Mandevilla Alice Du Pont, variegated liriope, dwarf lantana and a strong pink coneflower moves the head up and down on 3 dimensions not just your typical 2 dimensional designs. Never underestimate eye candy for your landscape.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My nerves are shot. What can I do? The above is a very common phrase for me to hear when I sit down to listen to a patient. There are a lot of folks who feel anxious, nervous, jumpy, irritable, or panicky to the point where it interrupts their lives. If this describes you, then take heart that you aren’t alone. Anxiety is a normal human feeling. In fact, in the right context it is a helpful function. For instance, if someone is robbing your house you might sense fear, sweatiness, and a racing heart. That fear might motivate you to yell, run, or call 911--all reasonable things to do at the time. Hopefully, these feelings pass when the situation is over. For some people, however, they start to invade every day life for no reason. Anxiousness, fear, chest pains, sweats, nervousness, inability to concentrate, dizziness, and muscle tension all without a good reason are signs of unhelpful anxiety. If anxiousness is building inside of you, it is time to take action. First, examine what you are putting into your

body (you are what you eat). Caffeine, alcohol, diet pills, decongestants, and illicit drugs all can make anxiety worse. Second, get some fresh air and exercise. Raising that heart rate and sweating a little every day is probably the best treatment for anxiety available. Also, you have got to actively try to calm the mind. Some methods for achieving this include prayer, meditation, yoga, reflection, and discussion with a friend. Simply setting aside 20 minutes per day to think about what real worries you have and what things you really don’t need to worry about can be enormously helpful. At times, these suggestions aren’t enough. If that is the case for you then it’s time to seek out your doctor. He or she can help decide what the next step should be. Counseling can make a huge difference in managing anxiety, and sometimes medication can help. Above all, realize that aid is available. Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
