thepublishers Peyton’s come a long way since her days of stubbornly affixing herself to the beach blanket and playing with the sand as her brother challenged bay currents. But she’s 5, going on 6, and this was the year she became a “big kid” in her eyes. “Adam, look! Kids!” Part of the reason why we love escaping to the undisclosed sand beach on the bay is the privacy. And though the kids are pretty good at entertaining themselves in a place void of putt-putt and bumper cars, if they see kids, they run over to them like flies over ... “A dead horseshoe crab. Yuck!!!” squealed the slightly taller of the two twin girls who had appeared on the beach two cottages down. “Hello, my name is Adam and this is my sister, Peyton. Let’s play!” The girls, who were from South Carolina, were with their grandmother and staying at their uncle’s cottage. Over the next couple of days, the kids kept their distance from the overbearing adults, tethering inner tubes to the bulkheads, scouring the sands for crabs and pirate treasures. The washed up remains of a dolphin
– which had begun to emit a most incredible aroma – received a proper burial, adorned with seaweed, twigs and shells. A neighbor (I thought this place was private?) donated an empty beer can. After quitting a game of twister once the sun started going down (too many mosquitoes), the kids invited the girls for an elaborate bayside dinner. “Do you like cornbread?” Peyton asked her new friend. “I love cornbread!” she beamed, her South Carolina showing. And we love random sandy haired kids with sun kissed faces chowing down on cornbread. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

AUGUST 2016
basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Virginia Wines, Part II Last month we dipped our tongues into Virginia wines, and this month continues with more fine examples. Because my favorite Virginia wines tend to be white or rosé, I often steer customers toward these over reds. This month we focus on a few exceptional reds. But first, one white. It is summer. Grace Estate Chardonnay, 2014 – Fads and styles come and go, and nowhere is this more true than in the wine world. Americans fell in love with Chardonnay then decided they’d had enough. The pendulum swings: oak, stainless, concrete. One decade it’s jammy Shiraz, the next decade ushers unmanipulated, natural wines, trendy oranges wines, and on it goes. If looking for a creamy Chardonnay, not too oaky, but still soft and buttery, reminiscent of those old Burgundies you once could afford, a blend between New World Chardonnay and Burgundy, look no farther than your own back yard. Grace Estate’s Chardonnay is made with steam bent barrels (as it sounds, the
bending and shaping of the barrels through steam), and has all the rich, ripe exotic fruit notes that good New World Chardonnay can possess, without being knocked over with an oak two by four. It’s soft and creamy on the palate, with notes of vanilla, pineapple and pear. $22.99 Now the reds, and not just any reds, but serious, age-worthy reds for that special meal. Pollak, Petit Verdot, 2012 –Like Viognier is to the whites, Petit Verdot creeps—or perhaps leaps—in as Virginia’s new star. In Bordeaux, where it’s used as a blending grape, Petit Verdot doesn’t always ripen well, but in Virginia’s climate, it can thrive. Pollack’s example is beautiful, with enough tannins to age nicely, together with notes of tobacco, plum, leather, pepper and spice. $32.99 Bluestone Vineyard, Houndstooth, 2012 – A blend of mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, like right bank Bordeaux, blended with lesser amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The rich Houndstooth see two years in French Oak, which helps give it the structure and allows it to cellar for more years. Vibrant dark plummy fruit, with clove, cardamom,
and toast. $29.99 King Family Meritage, 2014 – Meritage is the closest America has to Bordeaux, and here, with the addition of Malbec, once used often in Bordeaux but now seen more in France’s southwest, we see the classic Bordeaux blend of yore. Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Dark raspberry jam, sweet spices and rose petals. Silky on the palate but will benefit from aging. $32.99 Try also their Crosé rosé, delicious. And their orange wine, outstanding. Mountfair – The wines (all reds and all Bordeaux blends) at Mountfair are another little stellar gang that wooed my palate from the start. Never mind that Mountfair is a private estate now, you can still join their wine club and taste these wellmade reds. Riaan’s R - And to finish off that special meal, Riaan Rossouw’s portstyle R, with a hunk of blue. Pre-order only. We, at Basics, have long known that whatever Riaan touches turns to gold (or delicious grape juice) and we’re happy to see the rest of the wine world is now noticing, too. Check out Riaan in last month’s Wine Enthusiast. Congratulations Lovingston!

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES
Greg and Linda Heuer were a couple of crazy kids back in the day. In addition to being one of Nellysford’s sweetest couples, they are the proud owners of an Airstream they’ve named “The Silver Otter.”

Might as well surrender, because the baby boomers have taken over.

Blue Ridge LIFE
AUGUST 2016
Over the past five years, Greg and Linda Heuer, a cat named Sylva, and one Airstream tagged the ‘Silver Otter’ have traveled to every state in the U.S.A. – minus Alaska and Rhode Island – but they plan to knock both of those off the list by 2018. “We were tent-ers, we camped when the boys were little,” Greg tells me from a couch upholstered in a western-themed fabric at one end of the Airstream. “But we’ve gotten older and developed a certain attachment to plumbing. “I didn’t really care what kind of trailer I got, but a childhood friend of mine said, ‘Go look at Airstreams’. And that’s the way it’s worked out.
“There are Airstreams, and there is everything else. The Airstream is not like anything else on the market and once you understand that, you fall in love and you gotta have one.”
FILE
Greg and Linda Heuer have taken the “Silver Otter” around the country. Check out those views of Fruita Canyon at Colorado National Monument (above). Their Airstream has also been to Sanibel Island, Florida (below).
FILE
When they’re not riding down the highway looking for adventure, they are nestled up in their log cabin located at the south edge of the Rockfish Valley. In 1999 the couple came down from Northern Virginia on motorcycles searching for some land to call their own. This duo has traveled around the world – to Europe, to Africa, to so many places I’m dizzy from envy – and they chose Nelson County, Virginia as their permanent address. “We came over here and fell in love, and like many people, didn’t want to leave.” Somehow they do gather the strength to leave Nelson, but how in the world – pun intended – do these two decide where to travel next? continued on page 14

Blue Ridge LIFE
AUGUST 2016
“That depends sometimes on Greg’s business. It takes us across the country or into one of the provinces of Canada, so then that will give us a set of destinations in between. Some we’ve visited before and some that are brand new,” says Linda, donning a hat that happens to match the blue stripe on the outside of the Airstream. “I work for a national trade association for wood working. As a result, we have national conventions that we go to, so each of these gives you an end point for travel,” explains Greg. “She breaks out the AAA books and the Smithsonian books and we find things to see on the way.” When they’re not away “on business,” other road trips consist of caravanning with more Airstreams. “Best of the Blue Ridge” is an Airstream caravan that starts down in Asheville, North Carolina and ends in Staunton. But there are different clubs and different units for whichever creed you choose to support. “That’s why there are red numbers on some Airstreams and not others,” Linda explains. “The ones who have red numbers, like ours is 1927, belong to the club that organizes those caravans.” Together they drive their Airstreams, they camp their Airstreams, and they have many discussions about their Airstreams. This behavior could be considered obsessive, excessive even, but one could argue that there are worse things to be absorbed in. And when you’re talking about Airstreams, it’s more than just a motor vehicle – it’s a lifestyle that’s been around for decades. Linda adds, “Not a lot of the design has changed
since they were first invented in the late ‘20s, early ‘30s by a man who had been in the aeronautical field.” “Wally Byum, who founded the company and worked for Curtiss-Wright Aircraft, in 1936 made his first Airstream,” Greg continues. “It’s the aluminum construction that is like an airplane fuselage – [the tube shape body of a plane] – it’s built in the same way. It’s called “monocoque” construction [a French term for ‘single shell’], and it’s all unitized, so that all the ribs and all the outside are all aluminum, which makes Airstreams much, much lighter, and then their shape makes them pull through the air better.” “They are the only camper company that existed prior to the Depression that’s still in existence,” explains Linda. “60-65% of Airstreams ever built are still registered on the road.” One question the Heuers often get is, (and this they say in a familiar, almost practiced unison with a subtle hint of annoyance, so it really must be frequently asked), “Oh, are they still making those?” “Well, yeah!” Greg exclaims, throwing his hands into the air. “And not only are they still making those, this year they added ninety-two thousand square feet to the plant. They can’t make ‘em fast enough to keep their dealers supplied! “Because what is it? It’s us, right? The baby boomers! We’re at the leading edge of the boomers, but there’s people following us who are all retiring and they all want an adventure. And of course the Airstream brand is an icon… So they adventure. “Frankly, it’s a cult.” BRL

Blue Ridge LIFE
AUGUST 2016
I am a woman of tradition. I like the consistencies. On the other end of the spectrum, I like the ever-changing variables. Red Wing Roots Music Festival is a perfect example. My boyfriend, Luke and I camp in the same spot every year, in the grassy “J Loop” circle next to our bosses from Blue Mountain Brewery and with the same handful of coworkers they don’t have to pay us to get along with. We set up camp and share meals together, we work and attend shows together, we even share a single airplane bottle of whiskey in the crowd together. This is our tradition. This much has remained the same. Unlike our behavior at the event, which has varied every year. The first year we attended wide-eyed and unaware. Fresh into our new relationship, we danced inebriated in the front row to the Steel Wheels, we wandered late-night through the abandoned moonlit fields and stages, we fell in love. The second year we were slightly more prepared yet somewhat more exhausted, and I found myself catching the Steel Wheels set and sleeping deeply for the other large chunks of the day. Some may say this was a waste of a festival, however I found it to be completely blissful.
Our Fall Workshops
This year, 2016, the year of the monkey and our third year in attendance – this was to be the best year yet. I started daydreaming and making lists days before we had to leave. You can thank my innate and overwhelming desire to nest, or decorate, or Feng-Shui the crap out of a room (or even a campsite), or you can chalk it up to Pinterest, but I went into that festival ready for some “glamping.” Sure we brought the standard necessities of tent, tarp and beer, but this year we also brought rugs, tapestries, cool chairs, citronella candles (for function and for mood lighting). There’s certain criteria, a checklist if you will, when attending Red Wing, that I want to make sure to complete every year. Having a “home away from home” in our campsite has wedged its way steadfastly onto that list. The rest of the list contains hiking to the overlook above the natural chimneys, drinking excessively, finding an abandoned swimming hole along the river, dancing like I’m from Nelson County, and visiting our favorite food vendors. At the top of that list is watching the Steel Wheels show. After the very first year, I have been absolutely mesmerized by their talent and ability to take command of the stage. If you’ve ever seen them, you’d understand. If you haven’t, make it a priority. Earlier this year I was actually able to meet the lead singer for the Steel Wheels, Trent Wagler at a Red Wing Pre-fest Party. I smiled and shook his hand, totally kept my cool and may or may not have told him that I loved him. And I’ll go ahead and admit
that seeing him again and redeeming myself had also made its way onto my checklist this year. On Monday morning, I woke uncharacteristically early to face society and sobriety, motivated mostly by my bowels more than anything else. I grabbed a roll of toilet paper and walked the short trek to the line of portables. Mornings are always risky for using the bathroom. It’s either totally wrecked from the night before and absolutely without toilet paper, or its freshly cleaned and you can consider yourself having won the lottery. I hit the jackpot. Walking back to the campsite with a sense of triumph, the idea of showering in my freshly cleaned tub was finally within reach and just a short drive away. Most campsites were cleared out by now, only the dedicated stayed through Sunday night, so the remaining souls tend to feel more connected. We smile more as we walk by, we say hello, we aren’t shy. So when I walked by the camper that was just a few sites down from my own, I smiled naturally, and realized mid-wave that I was standing in front of two members of the Steel Wheels, Trent Wagler and Jay Lapp. With the toilet paper roll tucked under my arm as inconspicuously as I could manage, I walked up, gave them both highfives, and told them how much I enjoyed their performances. Trent remembered me <gush> and hugged me <OMG I almost died> and I left with promises of seeing them at next year’s Red Wing. Checklist complete. BRL

The ups and downs of a recovering market A 2016 midyear real estate summary for Nelson County
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Market recovery can be slow and steady, and still have pockets of time and data with ups and downs. In looking at the bigger picture of years past, the Nelson County market has shown some improvement and stabilization. However, the journey to recovery may have a number of fluctuating factors. Here is a midyear overview with historical references to provide a greater understanding of where our local market is and may be heading. Data is extracted from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors Multiple Listing Service. Midyear Countywide Overview; 106 residential properties sold in Q1/ Q2 of 2016 which represents a 2.75% decrease from the same midyear period in 2015 when 109 properties sold. Midyear Statistical Comparison; Q1/Q2 2015 recap: 109 sales, median price $157,500, average price $225,340, average price per sq ft $135.38, average days on market
(DOM) 209. Q1/Q2 2016: 106 sales, median price $211,500, average price $250,446, average price per sq ft $128.34, average DOM 180. The number of midyear sales was relatively unchanged. However, price increased for the median and average, but not on price per sq ft. The increase in median was a factor of having such an unusually low midyear median in 2015, which was not the historical trend. (Midyear median price in past 5 years: 2012 - $220,000, 2013 - $222,500, 2014 - $220,000, 2015 - $157,500, 2016 - $211,500) The median increase can be attributed to a shift in the types of properties purchased. Midyear 2015 had greater demand for value properties with 30 properties selling below 100k and only 11 selling above 400k. Midyear 2016 shifted with fewer sales below 100k, 19, and more sales above 400k, 13. The price per sq ft was not drastically different as the size of the homes sold increased; the average home size sold in midyear 2015 was
Marlo Allen
1,653 sq ft compared to 1,903 sq ft in 2016. Condos, with smaller floorplans, accounted for fewer of the 2016 sales which may have contributed to the increase in median price with minimal impact on price per sq ft. Residential properties have sold more quickly in 2016 with a reduction in average days on market of nearly 14%. Projections: Based on historical figures, I would expect an improvement in the number of sales for the remainder of the year. I think it will be optimistic to think that the price per sq ft will increase as it has shown incremental reductions. (Price per sq ft – year end 2014 - $141.50, midyear 2015 - $135.38, yearend 2015, $130.66, midyear 2016 - $128.34) Midyear Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass three main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 48 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 10 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 48 sales. When comparing midyear 2015 and 2016 sales, market

improvement was noted in the county (up 20%) and in Stoney Creek (up 43%). Wintergreen experienced a drop in sales of 23%. Within the county, Afton represented 25% of all sales in the non-resort localities. Midyear Land Sales; Countywide 37 parcels of land sold in midyear 2016 compared to 27 in midyear 2015. Stoney Creek saw the greatest increase in sales of 100%, followed by the county (non-resort) sales with an increase of 35%. Wintergreen sales declined by 20%. FERMENTATION FEAST
In the dead of winter last January, I spontaneously decided to intern with Suzanna Stone at Owl Craft Healing Ways; a nine month herb course. Inspired by my mother and her friends who found a connection with plants, using them in ways many have forgotten about. I was more than intrigued to learn how to care for myself, making my own medicine. Growing up, going to the doctor was usually the last resort. My mother chose a route less traditional, yet so much more empowering to me. Suzanna teaches her interns medicinal syrups, tinctures, salves, plant identification, fermentation, and much more. One of my favorites so far has been fermentation. Fermenting foods and beverages create probiotics that help with digestion. So what I’m trying to say is—yes! Soda can be healthy! In fact I encourage you to drink up. At least this kind…Great way to get kids to drink their probiotics. Greeting the fall with a stupid grin across my face, I am getting into the spicy autumn spirit with an apple, lemon, and cinnamon lacto-fermented soda, a blackberry, persimmon, and lemon soda, and a garlicky kimchi. BRL
Lacto-Fermented Soda: 1/4 c. plant material and/or fruits/ berries (blackberries, persimmon, apple etc.) 1/2 c. honey 1 c. yogurt whey Juice of 1/2 a lemon Non-chlorinated water 1. Mix ingredients together in a 2 quart jar, screw on lid and place on counter for 1-4 days. 2. Strain into 2 glass bottles with screw tops. Leaving 2-3” headspace for CO2 to build. 3. Let ferment on counter for another 2-4 days, transfer to fridge. 4. Enjoy! ATTN: If you live in a house with no AC, things can ferment extremely fast, so keep an eye on that bottle so it doesn’t explode! (May or may not have happened to me …)
Kimchi: Throw together any kind of veggies you want! I did: Shredded carrots and cabbage, garlic, onions, arugula, habenero and sea salt 1. Chop onions, shred cabbage and onions, dice garlic 2. Mix in a bowl adding salt as you go to draw out juices. Roughly 3 TBS of salt per 5lbs of veggies. 3. Pound to further release juices, pack jar and weight down (with a ziplock of brine) to keep kimchi submerged under brine. Burp jar to release CO2. Ferment for 1-4 weeks. Refrigerate to slow process. Basic Brine Solution: 1 TBS Salt (sea salt or kosher) 1 c. non chlorinated water Stir until salt is dissolved

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by REV. MARK FURLOW
PROJECT LABYRINTH
Converting the grass labyrinth at Trinity Episcopal Church in Arrington to one made of pavers is no easy task. Scoops of crusher run are pounded and leveled below an intricate array of bricks, which are then covered with dust to set the design in place. Mission accomplished, Winston-Salem Boy Scout Troop 722. The project is part of Will Schultz’s Eagle Scout project (he’s the guy in the Davidson shirt, at right).

Blue Ridge LIFE
AUGUST 2016
Will Schultz is only 14 years old – well, 14 anda- half – but he already knows the value of giving back to his community. “The church as done so much for my family so I wanted to think of a way to give back to the church,” said Will, who lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina but attends Trinity Episcopal Church in Arrington whenever he and his family are back in town. Trinity has been a big part of his family’s history. His paternal grandparents, Bernie and Kate McGinnis, live about five minutes from the church and Bernie has been attending his entire life. “My parents were married there [in 1997] and I was baptized there [in 2002],” said Will, who visits his grandparents and attends church services at Trinity about once a month. “That’s also where my brother and uncle are buried.”
Congregation members used the grass maze for silent prayer and meditation, talking to God as they literally walked various paths of the labyrinth while considering the paths of their lives. Will, a member of Winston-Salem Boy Scout Troop 722, started planning for the permanent labyrinth in the fall of last year when he was still in middle school (he’s starting ninth grade this year) and completed the project just a few months later. “I felt a huge sense of accomplishment because I’m the youngest person in my age group to get their [Eagle Scout] project done – at least the labor part,” he said, adding that he had a great deal of help from friends and family (especially his parents) and, of course, the church family at Trinity. Five friends from his Boy Scout Troop even made the trek from North Carolina to Nelson County to help construct the permanent labyrinth.
So when it came time for Will to start thinking about Eagle Scout projects, he knew right away that he wanted to do something for the Trinity parish and it didn’t take much longer for him to figure out exactly what it would be. A few years ago, Reverend Mark Furlow and some church members mowed a labyrinth into the grass at the church but keeping up with the maintenance proved to be more time consuming than the church had time for.
Before the workday last month, Will and his support team hired professionals to excavate the area where the labyrinth would sit, collected 2,200 bricks (primarily by donation), and laid down five inches of crusher run. Once that was done, the team laid out the 42-foot diameter design (in bricks) and filled it in with stone dust. Now that it has hardened, the labyrinth is back in business once more. BRL

ADVERTORIAL
Remembering a neighbor and a hero By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC
Good Friends, Great Grand Views
Eats,
This month’s column is not about a legal issue. This column is about a local man, my neighbor and friend that needs to be remembered. Harold Ronald “Skip” Jackson was born in Pennsylvania in 1931 to a family originally from the Faber area of Nelson County, Virginia, where the Jackson lineage stretches back many generations. After high school, Mr. Jackson enlisted in the United States Army and was quickly called to action in the Korean conflict. He was on front lines of the 7th Infantry’s push toward the Yalu River during the bitterly cold winter of 1950-1951 when his unit was ambushed by Chinese forces at Chosin Reservoir. During that infamous battle, Mr. Jackson, a BAR gunner, stated he fired more than 50,000 rounds at enemy forces, all while trying to simply stay alive in temperatures that dropped to -35°: the air was so cold that his breath immediately froze and formed ice crystals on his face. The 7th infantry and allied U.N. forces narrowly escaped destruction after a twoweek fight against overwhelming odds. Mr. Jackson was wounded but survived, and later participated in the Army’s successful push back to the 38th parallel. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service and honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1953.
Now serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Be sure to sample the crafted cocktails! Reservations suggested for Brunch and Dinner, 434-325-8110. Visit the website for menus and hours of operation.
Mr. Jackson then moved to California, later to Pennsylvania, and finally back to Nelson County, Virginia, where he remained until his passing this past June. His wife, Pearlie, predeceased him. He lived his final years on a mountaintop farm in Faber, Virginia, his ancestral home. I was lucky to know Harold Jackson, and I was honored that he would share his war stories to me when I became a new Officer with the United States Army. He was everything an American can aspire to be: a man of God, a decorated soldier, and a successful tradesman who ventured far and wide but never forgot his roots. He will always be an inspiration. Ave atque vale.

No one in Nelson who lived through it will ever forget that week in late August of 1969 when Camille and her aftermath ripped through the county, damaged nearly everything in sight, taking the lives of more than 150 people. And now there are towns in West Virginia that have similar painful memories because of deadly torrential flooding. “Many people lost everything, and some people lost their lives,” Kanawha County (W.V.) Commission President Kent Carper is reported as saying in the Wall Street Journal. “We’re going to need some real help.” Despite West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declaring a state of emergency for the majority of the state, that help felt too far away for some people. Including Nikki Chambers, who lives and works in Beech Grove. continued on page 32

The Ski Barn in Slatyfork, WV was damaged by floodwaters. Below, former Ski Barn employee Josh Scott helps with a load bound for West Virginia. The Ski Barn in Beech Grove is planning a fundraiser and poker run Sept. 17.
Nikki manages the Ski Barn, a company that started in West Virginia and has four locations within the flood zone. She woke up on the morning of Friday, June 23 to her boyfriend, a Pocahontas County, West Virginia native, asking friends and family what he could do to help. By mid-day, she had activated NUCU – Nikki’s Underground Crisis Unit. “It was an instant outpouring,” she said. “I put out a [call for help] on Friday morning and by Sunday I had a truck load with enough supplies to get in there on Sunday before any help had really made it there.” Nikki and her truck ended up in Richwood, West Virginia at a church where locals were setting up to help and those whose homes were waterlogged could spend their days — and their nights. She unloaded that first truck full of canned goods and bottled water, clothes, first aid supplies and other necessities and headed home to keep collecting much-needed resources. And on that next trip west, Nikki realized that, for many who lived further away from town centers, help was even further away. That Wednesday, she and a friend, Jessica Fitzgerald, took two truck loads — this time with mattresses and other furniture on board. By mid-week, most of the more populated areas had found some relief from FEMA and other official relief organizations, but the more rural areas were still very much in need of help. “You couldn’t even tell how much damage there was until you got to certain streets, she said. “Every trip’s been a little bit more shocking.” Organizations like FEMA often get overstocked on certain commodities (like bottled water and bleach), but are unable to supply other things that people need (like mattresses and clothes — even if they’re used). Nikki attributes the generosity and intuition of her Virginia friends and neighbors to the memories of Camille — personal or institutional. “Everyone from Nelson had a ’69 story for me and it was very easy for them to think about what they needed,” she said. “People knew what people were looking for — I was brought linens just as I realized that that was the next thing people needed. I feel like this area does definitely jump at the word ‘flood’ because there was an outreach that was so heartfelt here.” BRL

Nelson vs. Transylvania: There’s no contest For starters, $5000.00. Did that grab your attention? That’s what Wintergreen’s Tread & Trail Series will have on the table in cash & prizes through the entirety of the Series. Just thought I would throw that out there. We still have two weekends of racing mountain bikes & trail running to go. How about that for an adventure? Nelson vs. Transylvania We took the show down the dusty trail for most of June and early July. Destination: Transylvania County! Do you know where this fabulous destination is? Well, head down to Asheville, NC and then head South about 30 minutes towards a small town called Brevard. We’ve been down before because Transylvania County is a great outdoor destination with many similarities to Nelson
County. Breweries, rivers, Bold Rock, mountains, music festivals and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a mirror image of what’s right out your front door here in Nelson. On the mountain bike and trail running side of things, we have Sherando and hundreds of miles of gravel grinding. Transylvania has Pisgah National Forest and DuPont Recreational Forest. We have the James River. Transylvania has the French Broad River. The similarities can go on all day long. In case you’re trying to figure out my point, well it has to do with the title of our column: Embrace the Adventure. It’s summertime and we all love a great adventure. So pack up the truck and attach all your gear: kayaks, mountain bikes and all the fixins and head on down I-81 and make up your own route from there. Boone is another great town along the way. Asheville, the land of a 1000 breweries, gets in the way as well with river fixins too.
Brevard makes a great home base. Just ask former Nelson County, now Brevard resident, Travis Book. Pisgah National Forest and DuPont Recreational Forest offer more than 500,000 acres for mountain biking, trail running, hiking, fly fishing, kayaking and more. The French Broad River is a great place for chillin’, grillin’, fishin’ and just about anything else that ends in ‘in.’ Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, Bold Rock, Green Man, Wicked Weed and the list goes on for you to check out while in the area. If you can’t tell, I’m a huge fan of both Nelson & Transylvania. So being a huge fan of Nelson, I had to let you know a touch about Transylvania in case you were wondering where you should go on your next adventure. There is one difference for you mountain bikers and fans of fine craft brews: The HUB & Pisgah Tavern! This fine bike shop and brew
pub-in-one is located near Brevard sitting at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest. The perfect pre and post ride stop! Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series with Bold Rock Hard Cider is in full swing. The next race falls on Labor Day weekend. You can still have skin in the game. You just have to come out and play! Still lots of opportunities for grabbing some of the cash & prizes left on the table! • Summers End Fest – Labor Day weekend. Music, F&B, and vendors • Trail Rodeo – Columbus Day weekend. Exciting new event with details to come for this stage race. James River State Park’s “Adventures on the James” We have one more event to go: www.AdventuresontheJames.com October 15th – Fall Festival and night time 5K trail run

The 6 P’s of Landscaping Prior proper planning prevents poor performance. My boss from Suffolk would brand these six words on my mind every year regarding the many facets of my division and the money making opportunities presented if planning was paramount. These 6 P’s exist in so many different areas of our lives including our outdoor living spaces. Thinking ahead, now, can prepare us for better lawns and more successful plantings/bountiful color all season long. Here is what I would be thinking about. In my lawn, I would definitely be taking my soil samples. No better money can be spent on knowing what nutrients are already present in your lawn. Allegedly, more phosphorous enters the Chesapeake Bay from homeowner lawns and the improper use of fertilizers than from crop farmers. In short, most lawns have adequate amounts of both phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) in the soil and therefore only a nitrogen rich formulation is necessary. Know your lawn and fertilize it accordingly. Also, now is a great time to target broadleaf weeds in your lawn. Typically you can seed only if 4-6 weeks of time has expired after an application of 2,4-D (broadleaf herbicide) is applied to your lawn. Now is the time. Bulbs are the most overlooked shot of color in the landscape. In particular daffodils – lots and lots of daffodils. Through proper planning and homework, you can start your color in February and continue it until late spring if you buy different types of daffodils. So many colors to choose from and neither rodent, deer or any other pest find them palatable. I plant daffodils in drifts outside of the main landscaped area where their spent blooms and foliage is of little concern as they wither and die – a necessary part of their life cycle as they store up energy for the next years bloom cycle.
Enough cannot be said about the upper canopy in the landscape and its monetary impact on homes and lots. Properly placed trees make a world of difference in anchoring down the home, framing drives and producing much needed breaks from both summer sun and winter winds – each making an impact on your energy bill. My favorites are Sugar Maple, Japanese Snowbell, Norway Spruce, upright Japanese Maples, Blackgum, Chinese Dogwood, White Oak, Katsura and Crape Myrtle. As the leaves fall, moisture levels continually rise well into spring thereby allowing Mother Nature and not the watering wand to care for your new beauty. As with any plant, read up on the ultimate size of your tree well before you plant so as to allow for its future growth without affecting nearby structures or power lines that would force you to prune and ruin their natural shape. As we drift downward from the canopy, our eyes should fix on a lower canopy that consists of evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Equally important to the value of the home, these landscape elements create the backbone and definition of the landscape bed. No perennial or annual bed is complete without them. Use the large evergreens as backdrops, the medium, deciduous ones as seasonal interest and the evergreen smaller ones to define border and highlight landscape structures like birdbaths, figurines and patios. Some of my favorites are panicle hydrangeas, Justin Brouwers boxwood, fragrant Daphne, deciduous azaleas, Osmanthus, Nandina, Winterberry, Annabelle Hydrangeas, Gold Dust Aucuba, Otto Luyken & Schip Laurel and Viburnum. Again, soil moisture levels will be ever increasing and getting these guys established before the 2017 summer heat is paramount to establishing a noteworthy landscape and saving you both time and money.
asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, What can you tell me about heat illness? The temperatures have been high. How many of you do construction, farm, or other outside work? How about fish, hike, bike, or just find yourself outdoors in the summer? If you do any of these things, or, frankly if you just live in Virginia in the summer, you are at risk for heat sickness. Usually heat injury comes from high outside temperature mixed with physical activity and not drinking enough fluids. Heat illness comes in stages, with cramps first, exhaustion second, and finally heatstroke. Heat cramps usually start in the leg and abdominal muscles. If you are working outside in the heat, and start to get unusual cramps, beware. The key here is to slow down, take a break in the shade or air conditioning, and drink. Water is good, a sports drink like Gatorade is probably even better, because it has salt and other important stuff in it that you lose when you sweat. A
Discover Why worse problem is heat exhaustion, which includes heat cramps but adds nausea, confusion, and headache. Now we are talking serious business. If you are feeling this, you had better be getting to a cool place to rest and hydrate. If you aren’t feeling better quickly, it is time to see the doctor. Heatstroke is even more extreme. This happens after a person has been through the cramps and exhaustion, and then passes out. Of course, most people never have these illnesses, probably because we all know we should slow down and drink more when it is hot. But, it is worth reviewing the signs of heat injury so you can recognize and treat it early. Remember that kids and the elderly get heat illness much easier than other folks. Watch them closely when the mercury rises. So, when it is hot, slow down, take breaks, and drink! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
