thepublishers They say for your traditional 14th wedding anniversary, your gift should be made of ivory, the fake stuff because it’s not nice to rip the tusks off of an elephant in its prime. Call me a traditionalist but I think fake ivory handled knives or pistol grips lean gauche. So, we went with something more practical and authentic: A bench. Made of wood. Non-imitation wood. We had a 16 ft long 2 x 12 sitting in the old tractor shed leftover from a project. “That’s going to be a long bench,” Peyton predicted as she saw me dragging the board to where I had set up my work area. “Like I diving board!” Adam exclaimed, only for me to remind him that our water isn’t deep enough. A trip to the hardware store for a sack of concrete and a 4x4x8 to be chopped into braces, and we were ready to finish the assembly and installation. After letting the posts set overnight, I came back the next day with a drill and a box of screws to finish the job. Hello, skunks. Two of them. Right. Behind. The. Bench. Our relationship with skunks is, well, complicated. Our dogs were

sprayed by one several years ago. You know it’s love when you send your husband on a grocery trip for douche and he actually brings it back. Last year, a skunk wiped out our entire second batch of 50 meat chickens, save for a lone survivor who eventually died. Needless to say, the Staffords don’t cheer for Team Skunk. So momma took care of these two skunks. Kind of. This lone survivor theme keeps repeating itself. The good news is we are now enjoying the majesty of a 16 foot long, permanently affixed, non-imitation wood bench down by the swimming hole. Always first in, Adam jumped in with his water gun and started aiming the stream at a crack between two boulders. A few minutes later, “A snake!” The bench is a great place to bust open a cold one. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Cool Sips In the dry heat of Provence right now there’s the lingering scent of lavender and the zztz-zztzing of the cicadas that speaks to terraces shaded beneath plane trees, shimmering glasses of rosé and long naps after food and what not. Here in the humid midst of central Virginia, it was right around mid-July I first began hearing that same intermittent chipping, buzzing, “it’s sweltering today” call that has always whispered of summer, no matter where we are. Summertime often finds us singing the virtues of Provence’s national beverage: Côtes de Provence rosé. That is, if you don’t count Pastis. Pale rosé is the ubiquitous drink we all associate with the region, when in fact white wine is quaffed just as much. I can think of many reasons to opt for white wine, not the least of which is when you’re standing before a class vigorously swirling the wine in your glass while wearing a white shirt. In addition, whites are usually served chilled; they often have excellent acidity, and are generally lighter than reds so more appropriate at summer’s peak heat.

Our team of expert researchers here at Basics has been working hard to come up with this list of cool latesummer favorites: Dr. Leimbrock, Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett (Feinherb) 2015 – If wine is served in heaven I feel certain it must be glasses of wellbalanced Riesling. Dr. Leimbrock in Germany’s Mosel is one such Riesling producer, family owned for more than 250 years. Feinherb is a designation of body and sweetness similar to halbtrocken or demi-sec, meaning half-dry in German or French. I always think of it as similar to Austria’s Wachau’s Federspiel, although the latter has more to do with alcoholic strength than sugar. If you’ve lost your faith, well-made Riesling might just make you believe there’s a god again. The Kabinett is both incredibly simple (one grape varietal and made in a “pure” style) and incredibly complex (a palate of slight petrol, jasmine, white peach, lychee with steely notes of mineral.) Riesling’s characteristic acidity and lemony cleanness proves the perfect choice for summer. Just remember to

say “Reece-ling” not “Reeze-ling.” $14.99 J. Fritsch, Lieu Dit Altenburg, Pinot Gris, 2014 (sustainable)– Downstream a good bit then across the Rhine, we come to Alsace and the luxurious wines of J. Fritsch. When you read “lieu dit” on a label, it is a reference to a specific vineyard site—“lieu dit” literally means “said location” and denotes a “named vineyard”—generally a sign of quality. Here in lieu dit Altenburg, this demi-sec Pinot Gris takes on sumptuous notes of peaches, apricots and candied almonds. Rich and creamy texture and mouthfeel, with a long finish. Although slightly sweet, this is not a dessert wine. Pair with blue cheese with figs or pears, trout, crab cakes, Asian cuisine. $19.99 Paul D. Grüner Veltliner, 2016 – Here, Austria’s most popular grape comes in a liter bottle for great value. Classic notes of white pepper and lime. If you’re a Sauvignon Blanc fan yet in a rut, why not try a Grüner instead? The wine that pairs well with the unpairable like asparagus and artichoke. $12

Is Murder Ever Justified? The Things We Do by Kay Pfaltz Prison psychologist Eleanor Hartley has her work cut out for her when it comes to the mute girl named Jane, arrested and convicted of two coldblooded murders. What would make an ordinary girl murder two men and then go silent? Eleanor uses her work to distract herself from a vicious betrayal and her own problems at home. The Things We Do is a psychological whodunit that reveals the importance not only of what people say and do — often carefully monitored — but also of what they think and feel. The story weaves together two different narratives for a shocking ending. “The Things We Do is a story written with heart that is not afraid to look at hard truths, and ultimately offers redemption through truth.” – Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of Love, Medicine and Miracles Available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Basic Necessities, or ask at your local bookstore. AUGUST 2017

My friend had no idea I had a 1957 General Electric range mothballed in my garage. The enticing words she spoke were, “If you ever have some vintage appliance you want to restore, I have the guy.” I could not wait to get off of the phone with her and call Jules Tatum in Charlottesville. Chatting with Jules the exchange was pleasant, in truth appliance geeks meet. I texted pictures and paced awaiting the prognosis of a beloved stove. The GE and I have been together for the past 18 years. It was installed in the kitchen of a cornerstone house in the Swoope community in ‘57. The stove affected my cooking as I searched for recipes that were familiar to its four burners and dual ovens. The speedometer-looking clock/timer tickled me every time the train went by as if they were in communication with one another. Via tractor bucket the ‘57 transferred, with me, to a new location about two miles away making us officially inseparable. A few years into this move the ‘57 caught on fire. The large oven box was in flames, butter pie crusts will do that to you. After a handful of salt and some time for the conflagration to cool down came the assessment of damage. I’m the sort that suspects toasters can shock you via your fork (out of pure spite) after they’re unplugged. Sticking my head in the oven I heard Dante, “Abandon all hope ye who enter here.” Dolefully accepting the stove was a hazard to domestic safety I moved it to the garage to be used as plastic-wrapped shelf space. The ‘57 was a long way from being scrapped, the cure was out there somewhere. continued on page 14

The writer’s 1957 General Electric range spiffed up and at home in the kitchen, thanks to Jules Tatum’s elbow grease.

continued from page 13

There aren’t too many people you can send pictures of a Buick-like greasy elderly stove to and get the response, “Sweet!,’ but Jules Tatum is one of them. Jules’ workshop has that not unpleasant mechanical scent with the surprise note of a citronella incense stick smoldering in the grips of a vise. Appliance parts are all over the place ranging in age from the vintage archetypal to modern acquisitions. “The oldest stuff I’ve worked on would be 1920s. The stoves on legs and refrigerators from the ‘30s with the compressor on top, the monitor top. I work on everything from the earliest up to the new stuff.” The Original Duel Fuel The modern day stove evolved, Tatum explains, “What you see are wood stoves being converted to gas, or wood ones coming out with gas as a partial option. My dream is to take one of these large format stoves, like yours, and do an electric bottom with a gas top.” Design Jules notes, “The design history of appliances, especially in the ‘50s when car companies were huge: General Electric didn’t have a direct stake in an automobile business, but Westinghouse was actually owned by General Motors. So a car company was in charge of those appliances. Therefore you see a lot of similar styling things coming across from the cars to ranges, but it doesn’t happen much because they quickly realized the housewife didn’t really want her stove to look like a car.” Jules trots off to his kitchen next door and returns with a hand mixer c. 1940’s. It’s a turquoise Hindenburg sporting two sets of beaters in perfect working condition. Talk about form following history. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page making an angel food cake? With this cutie, why not? We turn to a 1979 Gibson Harvest Gold range with a rotary clock. “‘70s design aesthetics drop off, at least as far as I’m concerned.” However this stove is soon to receive a deep metallic blue paint 14

makeover before moving into Jules and his wife Beth Ike’s kitchen. Acquisition “I stalk Craigslist,” Jules allows as we examine a “top-top-top-of-the-line 1947 Hotpoint” outfitted with its original accessories including a “deep fryer, skillet, everything” including burners to color coordinated buttons originally sold from Crozet Hardware. Some pieces come from service calls by Little Blues Repair, Tatum’s regular job/business. A castaway fridge sulking in the corner might offer its siren song to Tatum while he’s tending a repair on a Viking stove or a Maytag washer. Far from being the “loneliest guy in town” he’s a transplant specialist cobbling parts, many unchanged for decades, together to make stoves hot and refrigerators cold. On a muggy summer day there’s something about gazing into the chilly bright of the 1942 Philco refrigerator in Tatum’s in-law apartment next to the GE stove bought from an estate sale, unused. The sweetness of old becoming new. Somewhere a screen door slams and a kettle of peach preserves bubbles away timelessly. BRL

When you’re 10 years old and the whole world is the size of a pinhead, parking lots turn into play grounds. One day when ski shop manager Nikki Chambers stepped away from a leaf blower, her son Cole took full advantage when inspiration struck. “I got my skateboard and I thought, ‘Hmm, I wonder what would happen if I put the blower on the skateboard?’” says Cole. “So, I did it, and I crashed a hundred times before I actually went downhill.” Two weeks later and Cole makes maneuvering this “hover-board on a budget” look easy. During the interview, Nikki and Cole decide the only fair way to judge the speed of the blower-board accurately, was to drag race across the parking lot against little brother, Eli driving the four-wheeler – of which they know to top out around 13 miles per hour. Big brother won every time. “We have a gas tank limit,” explains Nikki, “And yes, he needs me to start it and remind him [to wear] close-toed shoes and a helmet. When we don’t have electronics, we push the limit till we use first aid.” Cole has actually been pushing the limits on this idea since the summer started. “This is the Leaf Blower 2.0, because the other one, I had a humongous box that I decorated, and I put it on the skateboard,” says Cole. A humble beginning for a now totally rad pastime. “It was a giant refrigerator box with no motorization,” explains Nikki. “He did evolve this from sailing in a cardboard box to just ‘forget the box’ and adding the blower. It was just Cole stuck here, and like [his winter] hot chocolate stand, he only has these resources to play with.” Blower-board 3.0 involves helium and a basket ... if the budget allows. BRL 18

Heating Up A 2017 midyear real estate summary for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

It is summer and the temperature is not the only thing on the rise. The real estate market for Nelson County is finally, and I must emphasize “finally,” heating up. When comparing midyear 2017 with the same time period in 2016, increases were noted in the number of sales and price. Here is a midyear overview with historical references. Data was extracted from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors Multiple Listing Service. Midyear Countywide Overview: 114 residential properties sold Q1/Q2 2017 which represents an 8.57% increase from the same midyear period in 2016 when 105 properties sold. Midyear Statistical Comparison: Q1/Q2 2016 recap: 105 sales, median $210,000, average price $246,498, average price per sq ft $126.88, average days on market (DOM) 179, median DOM of 125. Q1/Q2 2017: 114 sales, median $250,000, average price $303,538, average price

per sq ft $131.56, average DOM 197, median DOM of 108. Since yearend 2014, the average price per sq ft has steadily decreased up until now. (Price per sq ft: yearend 2014 $141.50, midyear 2015 $135.38, yearend 2015 $130.66, midyear 2016 $126.88, yearend 2016 $125.32 and now midyear 2017 $131.56) Midyear 2017 reflects a 4 and 5% increase in $ per sq ft from midyear and yearend 2016 figures. The increase in median price is even more dramatic, up by 19% compared to midyear 2016 and up by 26% from yearend 2016. (Median Price: midyear 2016 $210,000, yearend 2016 $199,000, and midyear 2017 $250,000) The shift in median reflects the makeup of sales and a sizable shift in higher end properties selling. In midyear 2017, 12 properties sold above 500k compared to only 6 that sold midyear 2016. Some properties have lingered on the market, but have finally sold reflecting an increase in average and

Marlo Allen

cumulative DOM. The median DOM improved showing that properties priced appropriately can sell quickly. Midyear 2017 has had 34 properties to sell within 30 days compared to 22 in midyear 2016. Projections: Based on historical figures, I would expect an improvement in the number of sales for the remainder of the year. Surprising fun fact: The second half of the year is consistently the best time to achieve a sale. In the past four years, the second half of the year has outperformed the first half with 28-32% more sales. Since we have finally turned the corner on price, I think just holding steady on price would be an optimistic outcome. Midyear Sales Summary by Locality: Nelson County sales encompass three main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 58 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 14 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 42 sales. When comparing midyear 2016 and 2017 sales, market

434-996-3525

improvement was the greatest in Stoney Creek (up 40%) followed by Wintergreen (up 21%). County sales decreased by 13%. Within the county, Afton represented 24% of all sales in the non-resort localities. Midyear Land Sales: Countywide 42 parcels of land sold in midyear 2017 compared to 38 in midyear 2016 which is a 10.5% increase. Wintergreen and the county (non-resort) sales increased. While Stoney Creek experienced growth in the housing market, land sales declined. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. For further explanation and comparison relative to a property you want to sell or purchase, contact a real estate professional. Corrine and Josh McVeigh at Ridgeside Bed and Breakfast in Afton are the next generation of B&B hosts. They’ve got the beds and they’ve got the breakfast, but these two take things even further with fresh ideas to ensure a top-notch stay – starting with the bar soap. In addition to running the B&B full-time, Corinne enjoys making all-natural soaps that are provided to all guests and also sold on Etsy. “I just had a love for soap and I started buying more natural soaps, and had a big interest. And then Josh found someone locally in Richmond (where we lived at the time) who did workshops. He gifted me a workshopping session, so I got to do it onsite and see it in person. Then I got a bunch of books and then a bunch of equipment and started doing it at home,” says Corinne. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a sudsy obsession. “It is a fun compliment to the B&B. We have mini guest-sized bars, so everybody that comes gets a seasonal soap for their stay. And then I do different full-sized bars that people can purchase. Those are usually seasonal as well. And I use all

natural ingredients, I don’t use palm oil, no fragrance oils, so I use a lot of clays and herbs and salts, I call them plant-based.” “All Natural” is a real big theme for these two. On the B&B property there is a vegetable garden up front, a small apple orchard around back, and you can even check out the mushroom cultivation setup behind the shed. Did I mention they raise their own chickens too? As a guest, you’ll always find something from the grounds on your plate. “When we lived in Richmond, we did a lot to minimize our footprint, and we took that with us here. The B&B gives us a great opportunity to subtly introduce people to really meaningful reasons to do things in a good way,” Josh explains. “Like eating foraged greens from the yard – sounds crazy if you’ve never done it, but if you have a salad with things like wood sorrel and violet greens sprinkled on it, you’re like, whoa, these are really good and feel good, and it’s free and it’s a great tribute to the environment that’s around us.” Between the two of them, they’ve lived in roughly six states, so you could say they’re good at adapting to their surroundings. continued on page 31

Finding Nelson County may have been an act of God when their car broke down while they were passing through about twelve years ago, but their choice to purchase a home here was completely intentional. Four years of renovations later, the B&B now features new appliances, floors, and bathrooms, but most important on the list was the installation of solar panels that cover 100% of the B&B’s usage. “We chose Afton – mostly we were pulled to Afton, we felt this draw to the area. We fell in love with it and just really wanted to be here,” says Corinne. “We thought about what could we do in Afton, and then also looking at what we liked to do, what we enjoyed, and what we were good at, and how we could put that all together.” Josh explains the decision-making process a bit further, “It was kind of interesting, we wrote down skills, on one side of the piece of paper – what are all the thing that were good at, and Corinne wrote one thing after another. And then on the other side of the paper we wrote down what do we really care about, what excites us, what gets us interested and invigorated. And we would circle the things that were the same across the two, and what fits with the area, and found that this is what we’re meant to do.”

Corinne McVeigh learned how to make soap when she lived in Richmond. Guests at her Ridgeside Bed & Breakfast are treated to a “blue ridge bar,” made from natural ingredients such as clays, herbs and salts.

And no one can deny that whatever these two are doing, they’re doing it well – and it most likely involves a list. Their contemporary home smells of freshly made soaps and feels like a quiet ridge-side retreat. They so earnestly and proudly love and support each other, it makes the whole atmosphere very calm and appealing. “There’s a balance between adventuring and exploring and then relaxing and recharging. We kind of see this as a space where people can go out during the day and go hiking and then come back and kind of refresh,” tells Corinne. “We’re connecting people to nature and the outdoors, but in an adventurous way. We’ve got our hiking trail, or biking, its multi-use, we’ve got a fire pit. And we do a lot of hiking and climbing ourselves, so we try to encourage that.” More significant than just the accommodations provided during your stay is the feeling you take with you after you leave the property. “A big part of what we’re hoping to do here is to get people a little bit excited about nature and the world around them and look at things in a different way than they normally would,” says Josh. Ridgeside B&B offers bar-soap and a new perspective. How refreshing. BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

The Bearded Iris When I first began growing perennials professionally in 1991, I was introduced to a plant that I had long since seen in many an heirloom and cottage garden – the bearded or German Iris. This plant adds wonderful grandeur to the garden for the 3 or so weeks that they are in bloom – the blooms are enormous in size and can be found in a kaleidoscope of colors. Success, as with most plants, is not as easy as 1) dig a hole, 2) insert ‘green side up’. Lessons and tricks of the trade that I have learned over the years have helped me to understand this species and help it thrive. The best time to plant iris is in early fall (September) so that the roots have enough time to get established before ‘old man winter’ arrives. Consider them an evergreen, therefore they will be giving off water vapor (or transpiring) through their leaves all winter long – translated, you got to keep the hose handy in the off season (first year only). The best place for iris is in an area where they get at least 6-8 hours of direct sun a day (when I refer to 6-8 hours of direct sun, I am referring to summer sun – the most intense light and therefore heat that they will ever receive). Success with irises comes from following the golden rule with this species – provide for proper drainage. It is always best to plant on a bit of a hill or incline where they can get some water but are never found sitting in damp soil for extended periods. If you do not have an area of this nature in your landscape use rocks to create a raised area where the iris can thrive. If you are a ‘perennial’ reader of this column, you already know what I would say about proper soil

preparation – you MUST do it. For those who may be new, dig deep, add tons of compost, peat, gypsum and organic fertilizer and then plant. Once you are ready to plant, look at the plant carefully. Typically you will be looking a single ‘fan’ or foliage that has been cut back, a rhizome (the fleshy ‘foot’ like part of the plant where the roots are attached) and then the roots. The rhizome must be visible (literally basking in the sun) once you are finished planting, NOT below the soil level. This is to assure the iris will not rot. Distance between plants should be around 1-2 feet. Water regularly until established, typically until the end of fall, then cut the hose off! Iris like deep watering at transplanting and are ‘rooting in’ and then they prefer to be on the dry side. Spring may require a bit of hand watering but err to the dry side – ALWAYS. In regards to food, we typically look to bone meal, superphosphate and 6-10-10 – they are all effective and will produce absolutely phenomenal blooms. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers which will produce beautiful foliage but terrible bloom sets. Regarding pests and diseases, my biggest issues are always borers (controlled with an organic spray called Murphy’s Oil in a ratio 1 part oil to 10 parts water), aphids (controlled with insecticidal soap) and leaf spot (controlled by removing and discarding infected foliage and then treating plants with 2 alternating fungicides from your local garden center). All in all, this species is mostly maintenance free and is a wonderful addition to your cut flower or border garden adding stunning color in any vase in your home.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, Any suggestions on what to do for sunburn? I think most of us have questioned our judgment from time to time after a day spent in the sun and a night spent in agony from the burn it gave us. Most times sunburns are considered first degree burns, or burns only affecting the top layer of skin (turning it red, hot and painful). These burns feel better by covering them with cool tap water, skin moisturizing lotions, and aloe vera. Aloe from the plant works great, but if there is enough skin burned you might want to get a bottle of aloe from the store so you don’t kill your plant looking for relief! Time usually heals these superficial burns. If you get a burn covering a lot of your body or if you have a burn that blisters it is a good idea to see your doctor. Doctors will help you watch for any secondary infections and may have some other medicines to help it calm down. More importantly than treating sunburn, however, is avoiding it.

Discover Why Most folks know how sun exposure and sunburns can cause serious skin cancer. But we still don’t do a good job preventing these burns. Please use clothing, wide brimmed hats (great excuse to wear a cowboy hat!) and sunscreen (SPF 15+) when you are out this summer between 10 AM and 4 PM as this is the time the sun is most damaging. Even if you don’t do this yourself, make sure your kids are avoiding sunburn to help them prevent skin cancer when they get older. If you have had a lot of sunburns in your life, you should make it a point to have your doctor check your skin, or see a dermatologist to have it checked. Once a year is a good start, and from there your doctor can help advise you. So, enjoy your summer in the sun, but protect yourself!
