thepublishers Nothing cancels dinner plans like a trip to the ER. Boy in swim trunks + wet grass + metal chair = bleeding mouth. That boy you may have seen walking around barefoot in the waiting room (I know, I know, but we were in a rush), happily dancing around picking at his open wound, that was my son. And though I hate that it happened to him, it was quite an adventure. For one thing, we met Alfred. He had an armful of tattoos and he was sitting in a wheelchair. Something about throwing out his back. He also had a pack of gum and with that, he and Adam struck a friendship. As the evening wore on, everyone was getting antsy and the patient wrist bands had lost their appeal. Adam offered Alfred some chips from the snack machine. Alfred politely turned him down. Another hour went by and Adam began learning some sailor words. Alfred asked if we could wheel him outside. You would have thought I had given Adam the keys to the car. There’s nothing like seeing a barefooted boy with a gaping mouth wound wheel out a man for a smoke break to make
the staff notice and spring into action. I won’t bother you with the puking episode after some knock-out stuff was administered but needless to say, I may need to practice sutchering manager’s special chickens from the grocery store. Arriving home exhausted, we slept in and were later greeted by Peyton (who now seems to be speaking in a British accent thanks to her Peppa Pig videos). “Adam, you must let your mouth heal.” He ignored her as he stared into the mirror, checking out his stitches. “And if you jump in muddy puddles, you must wear your boots!” But then he wouldn’t have been able to prance around barefooted in the ER. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Naturalness – La Stoppa The sounds of late summer fill my yard and beyond, signaling the changing seasons, the approach of fall. It’s time to bring out a special wine. Few wines touch my heart quite like the those of La Stoppa, Elena Pantelioni’s beautiful estate in Piacenza. I say “few” truly because Elena’s wines are like nothing I’ve tasted before. I said these exact words to her the first time I visited La Stoppa in Piacenza. I took a sip of the Macchiona. “Elena…these are like nothing I’ve every tasted before.” Silence. Prolonged silence in which I thought, oh crap, I’ve just gone and insulted this extraordinary woman. Then: “That’s the greatest thing you could say about my wines.” And she smiled. I’ve written about these wines many times, and I’m sure I will again, sounding the trumpet whenever I can. True, Elena Pantelioni is a friend, but she became a friend after I fell in love with her wines. Her vineyard, La Stoppa, is in Italy’s Emilia Romagna, and the all organic, unfiltered wines are made by winemaker, Giulio
Armani. Since Jonathan Nossiter (of Mondo Vino fame) just made a movie featuring Elena and Giulio, you can look for her wines to come more into the pubic eye. It’s good for her, so I can’t get upset even when the wines are heavily allocated and prices rise. Those who’ve been on my trips to meet her, will not find her one bit changed by her current “movie star status.” She’s the same natural and humble farmer who loves the land and loves what she does. I hope, like me, you’ll fall in love with Elena and La Stoppa; it’s the whole package that enamors one. The wines are unique and hard to categorize (unless “yummy” and “outstanding” count as categories.) “You Anglo-Saxons give everything a name,” Elena says. “Italians are not like this. We do not put anything in a box.” For an intro into the wonders of La Stoppa, try: Barbera della Stoppa, 2007 – Barrel and bottle aging creates wines of complexity and dept. Rich, with the hallmark cherry fruit of Barbera but also the unique Emilian terroir indigenous to La Stoppa. $36. Macchiona 2007 – This 50/ 50 old-

vine Bonardo/Macchiona blend is rich with fruit like the Barbera, but also layered with earth notes. It’s velvety and complex. $36 Cuvée Buster 2000 – a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvèdre like you’d find in the Rhône, although these grapes are now no longer grown at the estate after Elena and Giulio opted for indigenous varieties. Yet, even with French varietals, it retains the special La Stoppa terroir. Like all La Stoppa wines, red, white and sweet alike, it will continue to age in the cellar, but at already fourteen years old, it’s drinking well now. Complex and smooth, $39. Trebbiolo 2012 – “No, this is not a blend of Nebbiolo and Trebbiano,” Elena patiently explains for the umpteenth time. It takes its name from the Trebbia River which meanders through the Colli Piacenza. It’s the old Gutturnio blend of Barbera and Bonardo. A similar blend as the Macchiona but, because it’s aged in stainless steel vats instead of oak, it’s lighter and fresher in style. More red raspberry, blackberry and cherry fruit. Less earth. A wine for everyday consumption. $29

Sam Saunders grew up in the nursery business, but his wife Joanie though she grew up on a farm in Roseland - was never quite an agrarian ... until about nine years ago when the couple opened Saunders Landscapes, now called Edge. “I always joke with people and say we moved in together, got married, and started a business all in the same year, but we made it through the first year so we can make it through anything,” said Joanie, who studied English (not horticulture, like Sam). They got married in Mexico, came back to Nelson, and went right into the trenches - literally. “We got married in February and came back and spent the winter digging trenches the two of us - the honeymoon was over really fast.” Nine years, 14 greenhouses, and a little boy later, Joanie wouldn’t change her lifestyle for the world. “I think we’re very fortunate to be able to raise children this way,” said Joanie. Three-year-old Jack will be getting a new little brother or sister in January, who will take a place right next to Jack in the gardens.
“Jack has grown up in the greenhouses, in the barn,” said Joanie. “We would put him in the backpack and take the exersaucer in the greenhouse and he would watch. Now he ‘helps’ and he likes it! He helps to feed the chicken and he’s in the garden … he would rather be out there than in the house. Sam and I are not the type of people to change our lives. Jack came into our world and we want him to be raised doing the things we love to do. Same with the second one.” For a while, it was just Sam and Joanie, but then they hired Megan Stine, who is still a huge part of the company. Joanie and Megan did all of the greenhouse work - all the planting, all the orders - even when Joanie was eight months pregnant with Jack. “I was out there hauling plants, loading trucks,” laughed Joanie, who said she and Sam were both working 80 hour weeks a few years ago. But when Jack was born, the Saunders did a little restructuring. “I want to keep a firm hand in the company, but I had to take a little step back. Megan stepped up and really took over the greenhouses from me. She’s been amazing and became, really, Sam’s full time grower as I turned into more client management, sales, marketing, bookkeeping.” continued on page 14

continued from page 13
These days the company has grown a bit (with 5 to 10 employees give or take a few based on the season), but Joanie said they’re keeping it small on purpose. “We like to give a lot of personal attention to our clients,” she explained. Jack and Joanie still spend quite a bit of time outdoors, but it’s always been Sam in the creative role. He does all of the design and hands-on work with a crew of 5 to 8 employees. In recent years, Sam has become increasingly interested in hardscaping and stonework, the main reason for the business’ name change. “Simple, clean and prominent edges - including mulch beds, patio and walk lines - are at the very heart of what I want to promote and market more,” explained Sam. “We take a lot of pride finding lines or edges in the landscape that approve curb appeal.” Sam is first and foremost a landscape architect, but as a horticulturist, he loves growing as well - which is where the greenhouses come in. When Sam and Joanie built their first greenhouse, they were peddling plants on weekends for fun, but soon came to realize that they could work them into the business. “We realized there was a niche for growing some things we could use in our landscaping,” said Joanie, pointing out that native plants are often requested by clients and adding that many clients come tour the greenhouses and pick out the plants they’d like in their gardens. But it’s not just gardens anymore, either. Outdoor living spaces (outdoor chimneys, fireplaces, even outdoor kitchens) are very popular these days and Sam and his in house masonry crew can’t get enough of it. As Sam says, Edge is very into “the marriage of the planting and the hardscape and getting more into outdoor living.” BRL

The spirits are coming. Silverback Distillery, located in Afton along Route. 151, is the newest addition to the Nelson County alcohol production family. And as a producer of vodka, gin, whiskey and bourbon, you could definitely call the family-run distillery a trail blazer. Though Denver Riggleman is a UVa graduate, he’s fairly new to Afton where he and wife and co-founder Christine Riggleman bought property after Denver completed his work for the Air Force as an intelligence officer. As much as they loved the area right away, there wasn’t much for Denver – who is allergic to beer and wine – to imbibe. So despite naysayersaplenty (and with the best, most experienced team they could assemble), the Rigglemans jumped head first into the distillery business. “I wanted to make something that he can drink,” said Christine, “and compliment the area.” “And do something unequivocal,” added Denver, who earned the nickname Silverback when he greyed a little bit early, and lent the name (which he shares with the adult male gorilla) to the new family business – which accounts for the names of their products - and their bars (the Monkey Bar, the Black Back Bar, and the Swingin’ Bar … complete with swings).

Silverback Distillery to offer vodka, gin, whiskey, and bourbon.
Silverback will start out with Beringei Vodka (which has the scientific name for Mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas), Strange Monkey Gin, and White Dog Moonshine (which will become the Blackback Bourbon in a couple of years). Plus, they’re working on a Sweet Tea Vodka for next spring. While it hasn’t been easy or even straight-forward at times (“[starting a distillery] and learning to be a brain surgeon are actually about the same as far of ease of trying to figure it out,” says Denver), they’ve had a lot of help and advice from everyone, including Virginia ABC. “They’ve been wonderful to us,” said Denver. The Rigglemans are excited to be opening their doors just under a year after ground breaking and can’t wait to be giving tastings and tours. Silverback Distillery is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m. Tastings and small cocktails will be available every day, with tours available on weekends. And they encourage locals to stop by frequently. You never know, you might see an actual Silverback there one day ... BRL

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD
Agnes Schrider and Greg Ebelherr of Nelson Wellness Center are gearing up for the first ever Blue Ridge Cycling Festival September 19 and 20 at the Devils Backbone Brewery Outpost in Beech Grove.
GEAR UP Not everyone’s a runner. Not everyone can swim. Not everyone’s cut out for the Tough Mudder. But, as the saying goes, you never forget how to ride a bike. “We wanted a homegrown activity that would be, hopefully, an annual event so we can keep promoting fitness and health through one’s lifetime and also have fun with [a] music festival in the afternoon,” said Agnes Schrider, an avid bike rider and partner committee member of the Blue Ridge Cycling Festival, taking place at Devils Backbone Brewery Sept. 19 and 20. “A whole day of camaraderie, fun and getting to know other family…and yet getting fit at the same time!” In this first-ever Blue Ridge Bike Fest, there will be something for everyone. From the 3.8-mile Glenthorne ride for little ones and beginners, to the 18.3-mile Roseland Romp ride with scenic rolling hills, to the 67.9-mile (metric century) Tough Nelly competitive timed race and everything in between, there’s a ride for everyone. And for riders and non-riders alike, there’s a music festival with tastings from the wineries, breweries and eateries featuring music by the Guano Boys, We Are the Design Featuring Jen Tal, Beleza, Bobby Read and The Currys.

“The mission of the Blue Ridge Cycling Festival is to increase safety and cycling awareness and also improve fitness through cycling, which is an activity the whole family can do together,” said Agnes, adding that any proceeds will benefit the Nelson County Community Fund, one of the Festival’s community partners (others include the Nelson Wellness Center, Devils Backbone, Blue Toad, Bold Rock Cidery, Wintergreen Resort, Bike Virginia and Nelson County Tourism). Riders should be prepared with a helmet that fits well and pants or shorts that won’t get stuck in bike chains. Friday (Sept. 19) during registration (from 6 to 8 p.m.), there will be some cycling awareness and safety workshops in addition to helmet fittings. Riders planning on the longer rides should be prepared with all equipment required including gloves or cycling shorts. Water and snacks will be provided for riders and available for purchase for non-riders. And Rockfish Gap Outfitters will be on hand to provide technical support. Riders can do one ride or many and finish off the day with the festival for $79 ($15 for kids) and non-riders can meet up with their cyclist friends at the festival for $20. Home warranty FAQs
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
There are fees for loan origination, real estate attorneys, selling commissions, and recording taxes, and yet more charges for hazard insurance, title insurance, appraisals, and inspections… Let’s admit it, the settlement charges associated with buying or selling a property can add up. Most charges are standard or customary and are not optional. However, there are a few fees that you make the decision to “buy into”. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about home warranties that may help you, as a prospective purchaser or seller, determine the value of a home warranty plan. What is a home warranty? Home warranties provide repair and replacement coverage when appliances and systems experience mechanical failure. If you are constructing or purchasing a new home, problems encountered after closing are most likely covered by the builder for
the first year of ownership. A home warranty protection plan can be purchased by a seller or buyer for any home, regardless of age. How does it differ from homeowner’s insurance? A warranty replaces items that fail on their own, while homeowner’s hazard insurance takes care of items damaged in fire, wind, or some other type of event. A home warranty plan might cover something that would be omitted from coverage with a homeowner’s insurance policy, thus filling a critical gap in protection. For example, if your dishwasher leaked and caused damage to the floor, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the damage to the floor, but not repair or replace the dishwasher. A home warranty in most cases would cover the faulty appliance. What does the warranty cover? Home warranty coverage and fees
Marlo Allen
can vary. Shop around and understand which plan offers the most protection. Standard home warranties may cover plumbing, appliances, and heating and cooling. For additional fees, coverage plans might include higher ticket items such as private septic and well. How long is a home covered? A typical plan is effective for one year from the time it is purchased by the homeowner or from the time it is actually transferred to the purchaser at settlement. Plans have renewal options; sometimes the renewal cost may be higher than the initial rate. How much does the warranty cost? Expect standard home warranties to cost around $400 or more with add-on coverage and upgrades. Another cost to note when selecting a plan is the cost of a service call in the event of a claim.

Who benefits from a home warranty? Buyer – After closing on a home, coming up with additional funds to repair or replace a faulty appliance or system may be difficult. A home warranty is peace of mind against unexpected repairs or replacement costs. Note: Even if the seller is not offering a warranty, a buyer can still purchase one. Seller Offering a home warranty can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers. In addition, most plans cover the home while it is listed and may require no payment until settlement. Whether or not you purchase a home warranty, you will at least better understand your options.

OLD WORLD CARPENTRY “hoch die zimmererkunst”
Putting this band into a category is almost impossible because they’ve nearly created their own. And this rowdy, rockin’, gypsy, jammin’, Irish-Americana group is composed of members much like the music they produce. Nelson natives and life-long musicians, Koda Kerl (lead vocals and guitar) and Marie Borgman (fiddle) are responsible for the serendipitous series of events that lead to this bands culmination. “Marie and I had been traveling just the two of us all across the country, playing a bunch of shows and road-tripping, getting to know how we like to play together. One of the things we found was that the rowdy stuff that we would like to play got the best response, that’s when we started thinking about a full band,” explains Koda.

In late 2011, Tim Deibler (upright bass), Lavin (banjo), and Brenning Greenfield (drums) joined the group in their own unique ways, whether it be from their common love of whiskey or by total happenstance. “It’s very natural, we never set out to play a certain type of anything, it all just happens organically,” tells Lavin, brandishing his beard and Irish brogue. “We’ve been playing together for so long now that we’re kinda in tune with each other’s ability and how we’re able to play.” “I love playing drums with this band because we have so many elements,” adds Brenning, whose dad is also a drummer and a regular guest for the band. Whether they’re playing for the close-quarters of Rapunzel’s or a foot-stompin’ stampede at the Jefferson Theater, this collection of characters is an absolute blast to behold. “We really have a good time together on stage, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, that’s important, and I think that is kinda key to what brings the different genres together,” says Koda. “And I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve had the success we have had, because people have a lot of fun at our shows. We’re feeding off eachother.” In the past seven months, they’ve traveled as far north as Maine, hopped over to Wisconsin, hit the hot-spots like NYC and New Orleans, and still their favorite crowd is back here at home. “Nelson County, Crozet, Charlottesville, when we play in any of these areas, we’ve got our hometown crowd behind us, and there’s no other people we’d rather be in front of, and that’s why playing at the Festy is something we’re really looking forward to in October,” says Koda. The Festy will be held at the Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland October 10-12 for its fifth year running and is sporting many other big-name acts such as Keller Williams with More Than a Little, Love Cannon, David Wax Museum and more. “We’re playing the opening night show – it’s just us and The Infamous Stringdusters. And they’re a great band, I think it’s awesome what they do, bringing their festival to the county,” tells Koda. “As a native, I think it’s great for the community and I think they’ve embraced the local scene well. And I think having us on the bill was a good call, this is our homeland and we’re excited about joining them on stage and putting on a good show.” Maybe enjoy a nice cup of tea while you watch, and don’t forget that little something extra. STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES
If you’ve walked by South Street Brewery in downtown Charlottesville in the past few weeks, you will have noticed through the open doors that something’s been brewing, but it’s not the beer for a change. Taylor and Mandi Smack, and Matt Nucci, owners of the award winning Blue Mountain Brewery and Restaurant in Afton, have decided to purchase and renovate the 16 year old business so it too can thrive once more. And although Taylor claims it was an easy business decision, he will admit to a pinch of personal motivation behind the purchase. “I was a brewer there for five years and it is still near and dear to my heart. Plus, we’re excited to have a bastion of beer making and a great brewpub environment right in downtown Charlottesville,” says Taylor, who worked at South Street from 2002 until 2007 when he and his wife opened Blue Mountain. “Lastly, although Blue Mountain is hugely successful as a pub, our current distribution network with that brand doesn’t get our beer in all the places our customers want to buy it, and sadly – because of wacky Virginia laws – there’s not much we can do about that. So developing the South Street line of beers allows us total access to the beer market through our new distributor.” The South Street Brewery building exemplifies a diamond in the rough with its exposed brick walls, wooden posts, high ceilings, and grand fireplace. And the Smacks recognize its strong character as a venue. “It is the oldest brewery in Charlottesville and surprisingly it’s still the only brewpub. The established location and name are a boon, but we are going out of our way to put our own stamp on it,” says Taylor. “Renovating the restaurant, the beer name, and the brand/ look to help show our new energy while building on the good that has existed for 16 years.”

Elk Mountain Contracting In addition to the aesthetic advances, there will be a new menu (with a few nods to some of the old favorites), and the beer will also be the subject of some change. “The beer will be more “expanded” than “different,” although we are completely rebuilding the bar dispense systems and tap towers. We will be brewing the mainstays and sprinkling in seasonal favorites, but we are also introducing entire new styles of beer.” Cue Mitch Hamilton. Getting his start in a summer-school dorm room at William and Mary, Mitch has certainly honed his beer-making craft in the past few years. Getting his training at Sweet Water Brewery in Atlanta, he found his way to Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton to brew alongside Taylor Smack in 2010. “As head brewer at South Street, I’ll be more in charge of ordering raw materials, brewing day to day and monitoring the cellar, which at Blue Mountain was kind of dispersed between three or four people at any given day. So it will be all me, I’ll be the only brewing staff at South Street,” explains Mitch. Taylor and Mandi are excited to pass the beer baton along to Mitch, confident that his style and skill will match the new spirit of South Street. “It’s a different operation than Blue Mountain: smaller, more intimate, and really a one-man show where the brewer’s personality can steer the energy of the beer more directly. We’re very excited for him, and I will absolutely be working closely with him in the beginning to help him learn the idiosyncrasies of South Street,” says Taylor. “We’d just like the folks who have loved South Street all these years to give us a shot when we open; no one knows how important this brewery has been in our lives, and we feel honored to carry it forward after the amazing 16 years Jacque Landry and Fred Greenewalt created there. We are confident our passion will be contagious once people see the great, fun things we will be doing with South Street Brewery.” BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC
Thirteen years ago I left my career as an annual and perennial grower to start a landscaping and wholesale nursery business. Over the course of these 13 years, Joanie and I have been very fortunate to work with some very fine people in Lynchburg, Charlottesville and the Wintergreen area – people who have allowed us to hopefully bring a little beauty and order to their backdoor. With the recent news that Joanie is expecting our second child (yeeee, hawwww!), we decided that it was time for her to focus less on the wholesale nursery side of the business and more with our children while continuing as a liaison between our landscape clients and our creative team – okay, me! With that said, we felt it was also time to give the company a face lift and promote the “design and dig” aspects of the company with a new name that could not be confused with any other business in the area – Edge. Edge will be very much the same company that many of you have dealt with for years, only better - better that we are definitively moving Joanie to customer service, an area that I have never been able to adequately fulfill while also trying to create and execute designs that I felt would express the creativity that many expect from us now. For years we have been working with stone and related hardscape elements. Now, more than ever, our team consists of some of the most capable and gifted masons and workers that I have had the pleasure to work with. Outdoor patios, walls, decks, living areas, walks, chimneys and fire pits alike with robust and clean plantings have become the signature of an Edge landscape. Not to worry, our greenhouses will still be growing loads of quality annuals and perennials that Joanie will be selling at the local farmers’ market and I will be using in our landscape projects – we are just taking a step back from our wholesale business. Over the past number of years, we
have offered a service where we install annuals both in the ground and in container gardens on decks and patios for seasonal spruce ups for both events and just as a way to rid ourselves of the winter blues. For those interested in hosting an event at their residence or business, we can provide eye-stopping color to bring out the true beauty of even the most humble of landscapes. Add color in the landscape and color bowls to decks and patios, define and edge landscape beds, add mulch and gravel where applicable, ‘Voila!,’ a makeover that will have you proud of your property. In keeping with the latest in technology, for the first time in this area Edge will offer drone services for those interested in filming their landscape, property or event from a totally different perspective – an aerial view hovering at ‘head’ height to over 200 feet in the air. This service brings a whole new dimension to both our company and property owners since many local landscapes and properties in this region are much more marketable viewed from 50+ feet overhead. Our drone services are only available if the neighboring landowners, where applicable, are agreeable to the use of common and adjacent airspace and where local laws and ordinances are followed. Outdoor living areas involving grills, sinks, showers, chimneys, fire pits and bars are only just a piece of what we have really begun to love to design and build. Imagine your patio with a grill inset in stone, along with a bar to serve guests food and cocktails on that perfect September evening. Add outdoor lighting and maybe even a chimney or fire pit Best yet, these features don’t require water and are 100% ironclad, deer proof. After last year record cold, not many plants could attest to that. Thanks for allowing me to take a break from my regular article to give you an update on what’s happening with the business. See you next month with Sam’s Garden!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have been told that I have metabolic syndrome. What is this? Metabolic syndrome, also known as Syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome, is a common and serious condition. It is not a disease, but a group of factors that occur together and increase the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Metabolic syndrome has become quite common in the US. Abdominal obesity and insulin resistance are the 2 most important risk factors. Abdominal obesity is when there is extra weight in the middle of the body – when someone is ‘apple shaped.’ Insulin resistance is when the body cannot use insulin effectively causing blood sugar and blood fat levels to rise. Metabolic syndrome is present when someone has 3 or more of the following signs: elevated fasting blood sugar, elevated blood pressure, a large waist circumference, low HDL (or good) cholesterol and elevated triglycerides. The goal of treating metabolic syndrome is to prevent the development of diabetes and decrease the risk
of heart disease and stroke. The most important treatments are weight loss and exercise. Losing about 10% of body weight can make a big difference. Regular aerobic exercise for 30 minutes most days of the week will help decrease your risk of complications. Blood pressure and cholesterol should be controlled by healthy food choices, aerobic exercise, weight loss and, if needed, medications. Metabolic syndrome is a common and serious condition that many people do not realize that they have. Its prevention and treatment are really the same thing – daily aerobic exercise, healthy food choices and maintaining a healthy body weight. Have your fasting glucose and cholesterol levels checked. Develop healthy habits and treat your blood pressure and cholesterol if needed. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about metabolic syndrome. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Getting Over Plateaus Plateaus in training as well as in other areas of life can be demoralizing. It is especially difficult in our society of constant stimulation and sensory overload; to undergo a time period without change or improvement may depress you. Everyone hits plateaus in sports, fitness, work and life. Lower energy levels and lack of personal bests in your performancethe same old dull routine and little or no change in your progress. What can you do to break things up and find that spark again? Renew your enthusiasm for exercise and fitness? Here are some practical tips. 1. Change it up! Try a different exercise class. 2. Meet with a Personal Trainer, set new objective goals and advance your program. Different exercises use muscles in a different way and will enhance your fitness level. 3. Use the Buddy System and do your buddy’s routine instead of yours. Make sure your exercise friends know you are in a low period so they know not to let you skip out on workouts.
Location: Devils Backbone Basecamp 200 Mosby Road, Roseland, VA 4. Add interval training to your program; try short spurts of faster runs or walks to change the intensity. Or do shorter bouts of cardio and mix in resistive training into your cardio time to break up the routine. 5. Do three days of thirty minute resistive workouts each week focusing on a different body area each time. Short, high intensity and sweet. It boosts your adrenaline and builds lean muscle mass (therefore less fat). 6. Chart your workouts. It helps you to note progress or stagnation in your routine. 7. Be consistent in your exercise habit. 3-5 days a week. 8. Try an aquatic exercise session one day a week. Try walking backwards in the pool for 20 minutes- it burns more calories and helps with balance. 9. Make it Fun! Make sure where you go or whoever you exercise with, that you are laughing as that releases the “feel good” endorphins. 10. Most importantly, keep a positive attitude knowing that this plateau
