thepublishers It’s a shame this climate doesn’t favor the growth of bananas. I hadn’t unloaded the groceries for 60 seconds before Adam bounced down the stairs into the kitchen. “Can I eat a banana?!” These kids seem to have selective hearing. “Sweetheart, can you please help me [insert reasonable request]?” Silence. But they can hear the rustling of grocery sacks a flight of stairs away, even above the music (noise?) of the My Little Pony theme song. I ate bananas when I was his age but Adam’s got way more chimp in his blood than I ever did. He could have gotten it from his grandfather who just passed away at the age of 84. Sliced bananas over cereal was breakfast when the kids were young. Billie G. Stafford was a Great Depression baby from Tennessee. U.S. Air Force, USDA entomologist, farmer, father of three. They played “Taps” at the funeral and presented his wife with a folded up flag. Grandpa Stafford’s generation is slipping away from us, folks. It got so bad in the Carter years, he had to sell off the pigs. One of the family cars had a hole in the floor that exposed the road beneath it. And there was the time the middle kid set the cotton trailer on fire with Tommy in it.

His and her recliners. A tub of ice cream in the green fridge. The 5 o’clock news. The 6 o’clock news. Bonanza reruns. One more read of the weekly newspaper, folded over and opened at least a dozen times. Plaid shirts with a chest pocket holding a pen and a hanky. Button snaps. Tucked inside khakis held up by a thick leather belt that kept losing notches as the years wore on. A monstrous old computer in the den dedicated to weather reports. Make hay while you can, they say. Pick the cotton before it floods. Tennessee Volunteer football. Grandpa Stafford bled orange. That color was splattered all over an upstairs room. 84 years and a final touchdown. Hug your parents and eat your bananas, kids. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford SEPTEMBER 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Mystery & Mastery “Probably one of the most private things in the world is an egg until it is broken,” said M.F.K. Fisher. Maybe the next most private thing in the world of culinary temptations, after the egg, is the bottle of wine— although perhaps less ‘private,’ behind its transparent walls, than it is mysterious. There in its quiet womb, it waits, the introvert, evolving gracefully until the day its own cord is cut (or cork popped) and, shared with one, and often many, it becomes the great extrovert—or at least adept at making wine-fueled extroverts and wits for a night. Just as there are foods and wines that feel more mysterious and introverted, so too are there places and months that do. As well as those that radiate extroverted charisma. The bright, yet still gentle month of September blends both, as it gives birth to its own special beauty with days of lingering and lazy warmth, and clear, strong light whose clarity hints of autumn’s approach. Sometimes the most masterful stroke of all is to remain in silence gazing simply at an expansive sky or smelling the air. Or

maybe just watching as a butterfly floats past and the birds hop from branch to branch. Oh, and then there is the awe of the tiny hummingbird, hovering, humming and buzzing out its joy, ever teaching us to extract our own nectar from life. The following wines all have a certain mystery or mastery, and we raise a glass to celebrate summer’s transition into fall, and to life itself. Lucien Crochet Sancerre, 2013 (organic)– There are some wines that are so distinctive they could not have come from anywhere than where they do. Please welcome Sancerre, a wine that speaks more of its place of origin than of its particular grape (Sauvignon Blanc), and a wine that when made well, like Lucien Crochet’s Sancerre, leaves you tasting layers of history. Here you taste the hallmark flintiness from centuries of fossilized shells, yet it brims with complexity and body. Pair with oysters or goat’s cheeses. Here is your special wine for September’s early hot days. $29.99 Daniel-Etienne Defaix, Chablis Vieille Vignes, 2009 (organic) – The notion of wine telling the story of a place, in French: the sense of “ter-

roir”, is one reason wine is so fascinating, and can be the dividing line between beverages like soft drinks or cheap wine, and good, fine wine. In this old-vine Chablis, the Chardonnay grape is denuded of all that is extraneous (oak, manipulation) and you taste what Chardonnay producers the world over have been trying to emulate for decades. Old vines give it great concentration, but there are also refreshing apple notes. It has a depth and texture that lingers long in the mouth, and an ineluctable quiddity having something to do, surely, with limestone, clay… and maybe a pinch of fame. Here is your special wine for mid-September as the month begins her transition. $36.99 Edmond Cornu, Ladoix, 2010 (organic) – Ah Ladoix. Such an overlooked appellation in Burgundy. When you can find a good one, rejoice. Cherry notes mingle with earth and spice. Sit outside as the light fades and the first dogwoods turn red, and see how the dross of the day falls by the wayside with just one sip. Here is your special wine for late September; perhaps you’ve already a fire going. $39

BEFORE THE WINE BOOM this man had the wild idea to move to a hollow and plant some grapes. continued on page 10

This view, minus the vines, greeted Al Weed when he moved his family here 42 years ago. A Vietnam War vet Green Beret who threw his hat into the ring in the 2004 and 2006 Congressional election in Virginia’s 5th district, you can still find Al working in his vineyard, and inside the tasting room he and friends built by hand.

continued from page 9

Tired of his suit-and-tie nine-to-five, Al Weed — who had always wanted to try farming anyway — gave notice to his boss and moved his wife, young son, and “infant-in-arms” daughter to a farm in Nelson County he found almost by accident to try opening a vineyard. Al’s story could be one of any number of central Virginia winery origin stories these days. The difference? “We moved here 42 years ago this month,” said Al, of Mountain Cove Vineyards. “We had a lot of work to do.” When Al and Emily (also know by her Chinese name, Suiling) and their two children Trés and Julie came to Nelson County in the summer of 1973, there was no booming wine industry. There was no wine industry, period. There had been some research at Virginia Tech about the grapes that grow best in the Virginia climates, but due to some bureaucracy and lagging teetotaler mindsets, none of those grapes had ever been made into wine. To top it off, Al had plenty of experience drinking wine, but had never actually put his fermenting skills to the test. “I’d never made wine before,” he remembered. “I went to Sears and bought a home winemaking kit. There were a lot of experimental batches and a lot of wine dumped down the drain.” In addition to the hard work of planting grapes, learning how to farm, and figuring out how to make wine, Al had to split his time between what he came here to do — make wine — and convincing the commonwealth that his business was 10

legitimate and potentially huge for the state. “We had to change the laws in Virginia to support the industry we’d become,” said Al, who was personally involved in many of the changing laws. “That was a bit of a challenge, but the state government was very supportive and most local governments said ‘This is good. Do what you can do.’” Eventually, Al’s diligence and research led him to discover the booming wine industry that excited generations ago in the region. When he opened up his vineyards in the mid-70s, he had no idea that a century or two ago, Thomas Jefferson was paving the road for the booming wine industry that exists today. “When we opened, that was 70 years after Virginia went into prohibition, so that ended any wine industry or vineyard industry that existed,” said Al. “But it turns out our part of the state was where in the 19th century there was a vibrant wine industry and we’re just the start of following in someone’s footsteps.” Al had no idea there had been any kind of wine industry in Nelson County, but when he realized it, he was actually able to meet people who had been involved — mostly older folks who remembered fun stories of their family vineyards from when they were small children. Just like today — or perhaps today’s winemakers have Al and his colleagues to thank — the early vineyard owners of central Virginia acted more like members of the same team than competitors. continued on page 12

continued from page 11

“We’ve been blessed with people who, for the most part, as idiosyncratic as winemakers tend to be, agreed that nobody benefits if anybody made a bad wine in Virginia,” he remembered of his early compatriots, many of whom helped him work with the state legislature to make wineries (or vineyards as most were called back then since the word “winery” wasn’t allowed in any advertisements) profitable. “We would taste each other’s wines, we would share equipment, we would share advice. It made for an industry that developed a good product that over time was sustainable.” Sustainable is right. Forty years later, Mountain Cove is making wine this year from what are considered the oldest producing vines in Virginia — a crop of Villard Blancs in their fortieth leaf. But a lot has changed since Al planted his first

grapes in 1975 — and not just in the wine industry, which would be diminished by being described as “booming.” Enter Ginger Larkin, a lifelong Nelsonian who remembers Al from her childhood. She was hired to help Al with harvesting and bottling but her part-time job has grown into much more than that as she works to build the Mountain Cove Music Festival and the vineyard’s online presence. “With all of the competition, it’s made it a little bit harder to get people over here,” said Ginger. “There are a lot of wineries to choose from and a lot of them are really fancy.” Mountain Cove goes back to the roots of wine tasting — with a rustic tasting room Al and his friends built from wood from the vineyard’s property in 1973 and tastes out of highball glasses.

Ginger said there’s something to be said for both the old and the new and that despite its age, Mountain Cove isn’t going anywhere. “You can see what the originals were like and then go to the newer ones,” she said. “Plus, you can’t resist the views here.” As for Al? He’s not sure what’s going to happen to Mountain Cove Vineyards when he’s done tending to it, but he doesn’t see that day coming any time soon. “I’m 73 and my children aren’t interested in it; they’ve got their own careers,” says Al to people who ask him what he’s going to do with the winery. “But I still enjoy it. I enjoy the challenge of it. I enjoy meeting the people. I enjoy the whole game. I tell people if I finish a season and can’t think of anything to improve next year, that’ll be the time to retire. That hasn’t happened yet.” BRL

Edmund Davidson was 13 the first time he saw a real knife. When a couple of hunters showed him some handmade hunting knives, it planted a seed in the back of his mind. His lifelong dream had always been to become a cross country long-haul trucker, but he started to look at knife-making books and magazines anyway. And in 1979, a 23-year-old Edmund bought his first homemade knife. “And then I bought another,” he said. “And another. And it just wouldn’t let me go.” He left his “dream come true” job as a long-haul trucker in 1981. “I woke up one morning with the notion to make a knife and be a knife maker,” he said. “There were people who said I’d never make it, but I wouldn’t quit. And look at the amazing things that have happened.” Only once in the last 35 years did Edmund get so low he almost quit. “One show I went to with 60 knives and brought every one home,” he remembered solemnly. “I did a number of shows like that, where you’re down to your last $50 and that made giving up easy, when you’re right down to broken.” Once in 1990 he came home from a trade show, where most of his money was made back then, and decided to clean out the old Army ammo box he got for free and used to keep track of accumulated receipts, papers, flyers and junk.

Don’t let the name on his short fool you. Home for knifemaker Edmund (not Herb) Davidson is a classic Virginia farmhouse in Goshen, which happens to be where he and his father both were born. It’s not hard to tell where the shop is (above).

at Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchards, Inc.

“I was really down in my luck and one day I thought, ‘OK. I’m going to clean out this ammo box and throw stuff away, empty the box, and move it,’” he said. “So I started throwing things away and there was this envelope I started to throw in the fire barrel, but I said ‘No, I better look,’ and there were three $100 bills. And that’s how I made it through the month. And that pulled me through. Things went on like that for so long and you’re thinking you will never make it, but I did.” These days, Edmund tends to be too busy with commissioned work to head to many trade shows (although, at one last year he met his soon-to-be-wife!). He used to make a lot of $50 to $200 knives, but these days his focus is on about 30 art pieces a year, which all started in 1995 when Baron Magnus Von Kelemen of Germany saw one of Edmund’s knives on the cover of a book he was reading and decided he wanted one then and there. continued on page 18

“So in 1997 I went to Munich and he took us up to his 90-room castle,” said Edmund. “So here I am a boy from Goshen that everybody said would never make it, hanging out with a Baron in Germany.” The people whom he’s made knives for has been one of the best parts of his job, says Edmund, who has made knives for Ted Nugent, Michael Sea, Richard Petty, and the Sultan of Johor in Malaysia. He doesn’t make $200 hunting knives anymore. The knives he makes now are collectors’ items, displayed in living rooms and even museums. “This isn’t like a box store where everyone has the same item,” said Edmund, who talks about gold and jewels and engraving on his pieces. “It’s an investment — kind of a display and an investment. It’s like buying a fine painting — you don’t do anything with it but look at it and enjoy it and say ‘Oh wow, look at that!’ When knives reach this level, it’s called ‘Art with an Edge.’ This is not a weapon or anything to be used; it is to be enjoyed.” His customers enjoy his work, but honestly so does Edmund. And many times it would have been easier to quit, so he would have if he didn’t love what he did. continued on page 20

Building on a Budget

Tips that can make building attainable

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

If you can’t find what you desire in an existing built home, then it may be time to give serious consideration to building. There are construction and financing options available that can make building attainable, even on a budget, or with very little money down. According to Blueprint Affordable by Michelle Kodis, there are many ways to build on a budget; here are a few fun and innovative ideas that can save you money without cutting any corners. Simple Floor Plan: Keep your floor plan as modest as possible. An open “shell” plan, versus one with lots of rooms closed off with walls, is less expensive to build. Simple rectangles are always cheaper than curves or angles. Square Footage: Watch your floor plan’s footprint. Trimming square footage will always trim your budget.

Detailing: Design your house to rely on straightforward elements. For example, square shed dormers are not as intricate as the gabled version, yet they serve the same purpose. Splurge Carefully: If you do so in a very limited application, you can splurge and still adhere to your budget. If you love expensive hardwood flooring, use a small patch of it in a special place. Materials: Appreciate the inherent elegance of basic, down-to-earth materials. Veneer plywood, concrete, drywall, steel, plastic laminate, and corrugated metal, can be budgetfriendly and anything but bland. Recycle: Give new life to materials not quite ready to retire. Your budget will thank you for incorporating recycled items. Stock Sizes: Opt for stock, off-the-

Marlo Allen

shelf sizes, as opposed to their expensive counterparts. Prefab materials and building systems such as pre-cast concrete foundation, cement board siding, prefab trusses, can also be wise choices. Go Local: Choosing locally available materials may lower shipping costs. Finishing: If you can leave it exposed, do so. Rafters, joists, and trusses, can be turned into prominent design elements at no extra charge. Long-term Planning: Don’t just look at short-term affordability. Choosing materials for their durability, life span, and minimal maintenance requirements can sometimes cost more at the outset, but over time the savings will accrue. Climate: Study the climate and weather patterns, and choose a design

434-996-3525

Considering Building?

that shields your home from the elements. This can add years to the life of your house and minimize maintenance and replacement costs. Do it Yourself: If you have the time, energy, and know-how, you can act as your own contractor and save significantly on labor costs. If you do hire a contractor, work closely with him/her on decisions about materials and finishes. Research: Do your own research on the local market and builders. A comprehensive knowledge of these factors can help ensure that your delivery date and budget stay on schedule. Happy home building! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Haley Osborne, a fourth grade teacher at Rockfish River Elementary School, took a trip to Iceland as a recipient of the Smyth Education Award.

Blue Ridge LIFE

SEPTEMBER 2015

Osborne’s horseback trek through the highlands of Iceland took her through terrain wild and remote. She kicked off her trip at Blue Lagoon near Keflavik after an overnight flight (below). At the end of the day, trekkers would pitch in and whip up dinner (below right).

Teachers make the world go ‘round, but sometimes their salaries leave a bit to be desired. And when a teacher has a travel bug, that salary can be pretty limiting. But not in Nelson County. Thanks to the Smyth Education Award, which was established by locals Mr. H. Gordon and Mrs. Mary Beth Smyth and run now by the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, select teachers are awarded travel grants to help them travel and bring back some culture to the classroom. (The Smyth Education Fund also awards ten exemplary Nelson County teachers each year with $1,000 and a plaque.) “It’s really great for the kids because they’re coming in with teachers and faculty who have traveled,” said Hayley Osborne, a second year fourth grade teacher at Rockfish River Elementary School who used her grant this year to take a horseback riding trek across Iceland. “There are maps all over the walls and people are really excited about travel. It makes the globe a more local place. Hayley applied for the grant on a whim during one of her (many) snow days this year, but the idea of going to Iceland was anything but random. “I have always wanted to travel to Iceland,” she said. “Iceland is part of the world that is still kind of mysterious to a lot of Americans. But the whole country is just filled with magic.” continued on page 32

Rockfish River ElementarySchool music teacher Morgan Robertson’s trip to Nashville included a Vince Gill show at the Grand Ole Opry, a Songwriters-in-the-Round show at the Bluebird Cafe (below) and the Listening Room (opposite), as well as a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame (opposite below). For music teacher Morgan Robertson, what better way to brush up on skills than by visiting Nashville?

continued from page 31

Travel can do a lot of magical things in the eyes of a young person. Hayley’s colleague, Morgan Robertson (the music teacher at RRES) was one of the other three award-winners this year. She stayed domestic and traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to learn more about songwriting for her young musicians. “Music in elementary school is an awesome way to get ‘em out there and see that mistakes aren’t the end of the world,” said Morgan, who plans to work throughout the year with her older students to write songs and then host a performance this spring. “I think it’ll be really cool for not only me, but for other teachers and for the community to see what fourth and fifth graders can come up with. They’re capable of doing so much on their own.” Her lesson plans go beyond just music, too. Many of the songwriter shows she saw featured letterpress advertising posters so her third graders will be working with letterpress to make posters for the spring performance. Morgan was very grateful for a grant that would help her focus on her students confidence. “A lot of them are so creative, but they can get really shy about sharing,” she said. And she hopes this songwriting project can help build the desire to share. “I think kids are so moldable in elementary school and if you train them not to be too nervous or shy around their classmates, you can set a good path for them when they get to middle school.” Hayley has a lot of this years’ lessons planned around her trip — from story telling and foreign language to geography and land forms, but a large part of sharing her trip with her students is about making the world a more accessible place. In her grant application, Hayley was asked to explain where she wanted to go, why, and how she was going to use her experiences in the classroom. She had some ideas before she left, but thought of even more during her travels — there’s a lot of time to think while riding a horse for 400 km of landscape, especially with so many electricity-less nights. “For my students, when someone that they personally know has been somewhere, they will remember it,” she said. “It’s a great way for them to make a connection. The purpose of teaching the geography — and using Iceland is a great example — is that it shows them a small corner of the world that is a real place and that is accessible.” BRL

Can the veggies. Sew some drapes. Tailor a suit.

HOME ECONOMICS the Ms. Albritton way.

ARRINGTON

[ nelson county ]

STORY by WOODY GREENBERG

It wasn’t easy for Carolyn Albritton to move from the city of Chesapeake, Virginia, to Nelson County in the late 1950s to try to insert herself into the community as an Virginia Tech Extension Agent, educator and leader. But once she gained insight and understanding of the people she was sent to serve, she knew intuitively that the path to harmony was through compassion and understanding and a few well-directed words and actions. She is someone you instinctively like when you meet her. Her eyes emanate warmth, she smiles a lot, and she never forces herself on anyone. But she can be very quietly persuasive. Now 80, Ms. Albritton, as she is still affectionately called by the hundreds of people whose lives she touched, will be honored October 3 at the Heritage Center on U.S. 29 in Arrington, at one time the first accredited African-American High School in the county, a building she played a quiet role in establishing. Barred by federal law from engaging in direct political activity, she could, nevertheless, give quiet encouragement, whether it was to parents wanting better schools for their children, students enduring the uncertainty of integrating the public schools, or to people whose lives had been uprooted by the ravages of Hurricane Camille. Having been brought up by parents whose formal education was limited but taught her the value of working hard, she graduated from Virginia State University, majoring in home economics education. She was recommended by the head of that department for a job as what was then called “local home agent” in Nelson County. Extension offices were segregated in the 1950s. The African-American Extension office was in Shipman, while the white office was in Lovingston. Her responsibilities included 4-H programs for youths and Extension Homemaker Clubs for adults. She met with 10 to 20 Homemakers at a time in homes all over the county, sometimes hiking deep into the woods and over swinging bridges, carrying the materials she would be using to teach. She taught drapery making, food preparation, meal planning, physical wellbeing, home economics and even how to tailor men’s suits and children’s clothing. Many of the homes she visited had no indoor plumbing. That led her to working with the Farmers Home Administration for better housing and home improvements. When the Extension Offices and Homemakers Clubs were integrated in 1965, she understood the reluctance of some to continue to participate. Carolyn Albritton prepares a pressure cooker for a demonstration to Homemakers in 1975. Now at the age of 80, Albritton will be honored at the Heritage Center for her work.

In the 1970s she helped pioneer the Shipman Senior Center. “I wanted all people, black and white, to come. We needed someone with compassion to lead the center.” Together with Extension Agent Hughes Swain, they chose Gladys Elliott, wife of the then-building inspector Harvey Elliott. The Senior Center is still in existence. The list of Carolyn Albritton’s participation in organizations serving Nelson is lengthy. Habitat for Humanity, Oakland Museum, The Heritage Center’s Oral History Project, the Advisory Committee of the Jefferson Area Board for the Aging, JAUNT Advisory Committee, Pine Hill Baptist Church, Monticello

Area Community Action Agency, and others. That involvement makes it hard for some to remember she retired from the Extension Office in 1990. “I still get calls from people wanting to know about things like food preservation,” she laughs. She remembers asking her mother one school day, long ago, “Mama, do I have to say ‘yes ma’am, and ‘no ma’am to everyone? She said ‘you have to honor everyone, and remember, God made me who I am.’” Carolyn Albritton’s many admirers believe God did a very good job with her. BRL

FAREWELL TO FATHER Billie G. Stafford July 17, 1931 – August 4, 2015

36

Blue Ridge LIFE

SEPTEMBER 2015

Billie G. Stafford (it was supposed to be “Billy” but the doctor spelled it wrong on the birth certificate) was born in northwest Tennessee and somehow mananged to survive being the brother to three sisters. After a stint in the Air Force, he settled in Dyersburg, Tennessee to marry the love of his life, Janice Stafford, and raise a family of their own.

A few weeks ago, I made a difficult trip back to my home birth county back in northwestern Tennessee. My hometown borders the Mississippi River to the west and — other than one single more northern county — it’s tucked as far up in that end of Tennessee as you can get. On an ultra-clear day you can see Arkansas and Missouri to the west and (if you’re on the county’s highest point, Lenox Hill — an anthill by Virginia mountain standards) Kentucky to the north. Dyer County is where I was born, where I was raised, and where I just buried my father. My brother, my sister and I lived in the same farmhouse in the middle of a beautiful, dreamlike paradise for my entire childhood. My mother remained there after my father’s death last month, though she’s headed to assisted living now. My summers as a child there consisted of riding my pinto horse, Apache, all over the farm, down by the river, and eventually even to the airport when I learned to fly. In addition to building a stall for Apache, my dad built me my very own darkroom. Yeah, I had the photo bug even in back my teens; back when we developed photos in trays and digital didn’t exist in my wildest dreams. When I left Virginia in August to make the trip back to see my fading father, I knew this was probably it: the end. For almost three days, we watched as my mother said goodbye to the love of her life. It was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I’m not the first, nor the last to bid farewell to a parent. Many of you already have. Much of who I am here on our farm in Nelson was defined by my dad, my first and most important teacher. When I was grow-

ing up, I never realized just how important it was to learn about livestock. How to boost off a car. How to change the oil. How to run a chain saw. How to drive a tractor. How to stop and appreciate a sunset, a rain, a newborn calf. Often (and sadly) we learn how valuable these lessons are only in retrospect. As I look around today, I am astonished at how such basic skills have been lost. I am glad I will one day be able to teach my son Adam — and yes, most certainly my daughter Peyton, too — those same things my dad taught me. Saying goodbye is never easy. The end is the end. At least here on earth. You glaringly realize your days are very numbered. You also realize how much a parent contributes to your life when you become a parent yourself. The endless hours you never knew about when they worried, they cried, they celebrated. My dad was the first in his family to get a college degree. Professionally, he was a bug man for the USDA — an entomologist. That was the money that put a roof over our heads, gas in the tank and food on the table. Personally, he was a member of the choir at his church for more than 50 years, an Air Force veteran, a tireless volunteer at the local hospital, a farmer, a brother. A husband. A dad. A granddad. As I write this tribute, I am sitting back stage at the annual mountain music festival I have emceed for years. I think about how much he would like this music. I can guarantee he would have known a lot of the songs by heart. Knowing that I’m doing things he would have loved still makes me happier than he could have ever known. Long after the tears have dried, I will remember my dad — my teacher — with a smile. BRL | TOMMY STAFFORD SEPTEMBER 2015

SEPTEMBER 2015

For the last two decades, Jackie Hostage and Nursing Homes Swing have been bringing “joyful noises to quite lives.” After retiring from publishing, Jackie and her husband, Bob, who has since passed away, spent a lot of time volunteering at a hospice. During one of their many visits, one of the residents asked if we could bring them some music. And so it began. The couple started by bringing local musicians to four nursing homes and paying their fees themselves. After about six months they got a grant from the Better Living Foundation and increased to eight nursing homes a month. Today, Nursing Homes Swing is a full-fledged 501(c)3 non-profit organization that serves twelve nursing homes every month, providing live swing music to more than 2,000 elderly residents every year. “That was our generation — the music of the 40s, 50s, and 60s,” said Jackie, the NHS chairman. “The people in the nursing homes were pretty much our age or older so that was the music they responded to. If we bring in a group that’s a little bit ‘too cool’ the reaction isn’t as promising. They really want the old songs!” And the old songs are just fine with performer-turnedvolunteer Mary Beth Revak.

Estate Planning and the Nursing Home By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC

“It’s an audience that is very familiar with the kind of music I love — American Swing Music,” said Mary Beth. “It’s very gratifying to play for an audience that can sing along; it’s a little party every time we play.” Jackie and Bob contacted Mary Beth eight years ago through her band ACME Swing Manufacturing. After a few performances, she was hooked. “There are some musicians who have really good names in Charlottesville — the top echelons in Charlottesville music — and you hesitate to ask them, but they are so generous. They like playing so much they do it in good spirits,” said Jackie, who says NHS uses 100% of its funding to pay musicians what they can. Mary Beth says the group is hoping to expand its reach to Nelson County and a September 26 fund raiser at Rapunzel’s in Lovingston is on the calendar. A huge part of the reward of performing, Jackie says, is seeing how nursing home residents respond, especially when the residents have lower incomes. “They are people who haven’t really had many experiences in their lives,” said Jackie. “They’re on Medicare or Medicaid and they just don’t have much, so this is quite a bright spot in their day.” BRL

Have you ever heard that you should give your house to your kids to protect it from the cost of a nursing home? If the thought concerns you that you may someday lose your home or your savings because you need long-term care or nursing home care, you should know your options. Contrary to what you may have heard, you do NOT have to give your house or other assets to your children to protect them – there are other legal options available. Long-term care planning involves arranging your assets in a way that protects some or all of your assets from the devastating cost of long-term care or nursing home care. Planning of this kind will often involve the use of a special type of deed, an irrevocable trust, or maybe long-term care insurance. This type of planning is most effective when it’s done before any problems arise. The ideal time to start planning for asset protection is at least five years before nursing home care might become a serious concern. Other than gifting assets directly to children, setting up an irrevocable trust is often the most effective option to protect assets. After five years, assets funded to a properly drafted and managed irrevocable trust will be considered unavailable if a nursing home stay is required. These assets are then preserved for a spouse or loved ones. In Virginia, the person making the trust can act as the Trustee, meaning the person creating the trust can still have management control over the assets in the trust. For example, if real estate is held in an irrevocable trust, the person setting up the trust can maintain full control over the property. The only limitation on the Trustmaker is that the real property, or the proceeds from the sale of the real property, cannot be distributed out of the trust directly to the Trustmaker. This limitation provides protection. Transferring assets into an irrevocable trust is usually preferable over gifting assets directly to children. When assets are gifted directly to children or other loved ones, you lose the control over those assets. Gifting the property directly to the children also subjects the assets to the child’s creditors, lawsuits, or if the child goes through a divorce, the child’s divorce settlement. With an irrevocable trust, you can maintain control of the assets and the property is not subject to the liabilities of the children. Long-term care insurance is another great way to protect assets, but most policies do not cover the full cost of care and usually have a short period of coverage. Sadly, not everyone can qualify for a longterm care insurance policy. As a result, an irrevocable trust may be the only alternative. Asset protection planning ensures your spouse is cared for if you become ill, without impoverishing your spouse. Making responsible informed decisions on the best planning procedures to meet your goals should involve a discussion with an attorney experienced in this very complicated subject. To protect your legacy for the next generation, consider planning today to protect your assets.

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

Jake: No Leash Required A little over 16 years ago, one of my favorite adventures began by the name of Jake. He literally stumbled and tripped through the front yard into my life. It’s amazing how the little things in life can make all the difference. He weighed all of maybe two pounds when I first picked him up. It was incredibly how much homework I put into finding this little Jack Russell. I knew I wanted to get a dog. With my lifestyle of working straight through days trading stocks, racing mountain bikes and just plain ol’ traveling all over the place, this would not be an easy decision. Larger dogs can be a challenge for traveling. But who doesn’t love a Lab. Smaller dogs may be easier to maneuver but some tend to be a little yappy. Then I remember coming across a Jack Russell once and really loved the breed. They have a Napoleon complex; believe they are

bigger than they really are plus smart. Jack Russell, it is … My Aunt had an Aunt. Sounds funny but my Aunt’s Aunt happened to be a Jack Russell breeder. So timing is everything and she just had a litter of Jack Russell’s born. Off I went to check out what a litter of Jack Russell’s look like. There must have been 6 or 7 little brown/white pups all huddled together. Then over in the corner was the cutest little black/white pup all by himself. Yep. He was my pick and I called him Jake! Even the name selection was a trial and tribulation. I remember the first iteration was Nitro. Jack Russells are fast and furious, right. But seemed a little off the beaten path for me. Jake seemed more personable and he was going to be my second mate. It’s kind of hard barking orders (ha ha) at Nitro. So Jake was the choice. As the years rolled by, I knew I had chosen correctly. For a brief

stint, we lived in Baltimore about a mile from the trails. I could put him in my backpack and ride him down to the trail head. He would ride with his head on my shoulder until I let him out. I remember people driving besides saying out the window, ‘How cute!’ He would bark back to watch the road. Once on the trails, he would run ahead, go chase deer, make sure the coast was clear and then wait and repeat all over again. No leash required. There were so many adventures over the years; it would require a book of epic proportions to go over them all. There were kayaking trips where he would ride in the back hatch and jump out and swim after geese. That’s why I bought him a harness. So I could pick him out of the water like a briefcase. We would go one road trips and I would look in my rearview mirror to watch he riding on top of the cooler so he could see where we were going. When we

would go snowshoeing, he would burrow under the snow because he was only about 9-12 inches high. The stories continue on in pictures and my head. Jake was a tough one to put in a place in my life. He was more than Man’s Best Friend. I watched him grow from being like a son to being a grandfather. He was a wise soul that everyone loved. From hanging out on the porch meeting everyone that came along to hanging with the crew at Devils Backbone through the holidays, they were great times. Jake passed away on July 18, 2015.

There are many aspects of the perfect patio or outdoor living area that can make it a destination spot. Stone patios, fire pits, chimneys and even water features both enchant the eye and comfort the ear making for a pleasant sit and stay atmosphere. However, the often forgotten sense that awakens any home and entices you to stop and just take a deep breath are the fragrant shrubs. In this list are a group of fragrant shrubs that I have been growing for years and are relatively low maintenance with high chance for success - mainly permeating your garden with amazing scents and leave your guests turning in circles trying to locate their origin. Know your space, prevailing breezes and locations where your guests typically congregate/travel and then let these guys take it from there. Top of the list has to be one of my favorites, the Variegated Fragrant Daphne or Daphne odora ‘Variegata’. Growing to around 4 feet tall, this Daphne produces an abundance of rosy-pink buds that open white and emit an awesome sweet and spicy aroma that can literally travel across an entire landscape. Blooming in late winter or early spring, this guy needs to be located in relative close proximity to where guests may travel or sit for a spell on a warm spring day. With its variegated evergreen foliage, this plant adds additional beauty and interest to an otherwise relatively boring early spring garden. Best to plant in shade with protection from the drying effects of the west winds and in humus-rich soil that drains well. Avoid pruning if at all possible. Viburnums have really seen a huge increase in breeding. One of the older varieties, Viburnum carlesii or Koreanspice Viburnum, is another one of those shrubs that has staying

power and should not be overlooked for younger, flashy hybrids. Growing to around 6 feet in height and spread, this plant works well in the back of the border where its pubescent medium foliage can help to anchor down a large area. The late spring blooms start rose colored and then open to a pure white in grapefruit size clusters on the ends of the branches. Although it is deciduous, they do tend to have attractive berries that add additional interest to the fall or winter garden. Plant in full or mostly sunny sites with good drainage. Avoid pruning until AFTER they have bloomed. I mostly avoid shrubs that have spines close to the house simply because my family and I spend the majority of the warmer seasons with grass between our toes. One plant that has found its way into the back of one of my borders is the Fortune’s Osmanthus or Osmathus fortunei. In one word, the fragrance is incredible. Born on tiny white flowers along the stem, there really is no visible show to speak of during the late season bloom – just a commanding fragrance that can carry for hundreds of feet. These evergreen shrubs with shiny dark green foliage should be planted as a hedge since they typically can exceed 15 feet+ in height and with a 10 foot spread. Full sun (preferred) to shade seem to work. Mock Orange or Philadelphus ‘Innocense’ is one of those shrubs that I rarely see during my day to day work. During my years of work with this shrub at my home, I can say that it not only has a commanding fragrance but is attractive in flower too - an abundance of snow white, medium flowers (both single and double) are born at the terminal of the branches in early summer. Although deciduous, the show and fragrance are worth the large footprint they occupy – 6-8 feet tall and wide. Plant in full to mostly sunny areas.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, Why does my child need to get a meningitis vaccine? The meningitis vaccine is a vaccine against a bacterium called Neisseria meningitides, also known as meningococcus. This is a really scary bacterium that you don’t want to get. It can cause an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, known as meningitis. It can also cause bloodstream infections. Meningococcal disease is most often seen in children and young adults. Certain medical conditions, like not having a spleen, increase the risk of getting infected with meningococcus. Travelling to certain parts of the world, like sub-Saharan Africa, also increase the risk of exposure. About 10% of people are colonized with meningococcus. This means that the bacterium lives in the back of their nose but does not cause infection. Sometimes the bacteria will invade the body and cause infection. The infection can be spread from person to person through saliva and respiratory secretions, like from coughing or kissing. Fairly close

contact is needed for spread of the bacteria. The symptoms of meningococcal meningitis usually come several days after exposure and include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to lights or confusion. When meningococcal blood stream infections are present the symptoms may include fatigue, vomiting, chills, severe body aches, rapid breathing or a dark purple rash. These infections are very serious, and death can come within hours. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. The best protection against meningococcal disease is vaccination. Current recommendations are for all 11-12 years get the vaccine, with a booster given at 16 years old. Many colleges require that students are vaccinated. There are other specific situations where the vaccine is indicated. If you have questions about this ask your doctor. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
