thepublishers It happens every month. After I upload the issue to the printer and get his thumbs up, I get the itch. The itch to ignore my laptop for a few days and tackle a home project instead. Peyton has a Unicorn-themed birthday coming up and our front porch has been begging for some attention. Unicorns need pretty porches otherwise they won’t stick around. With a look of amusement, Tommy steps out onto the porch to inspect my handiwork. “The whole house is shaking!” he exclaims. There are few things that make my eyes dilate but one of them is apparently the orbital sander I rented. It was too easy. No background check to ensure that I knew what the heck I was doing (YouTube is great); I just handed the nice lady a credit card and had a young man load it up for me. Off I went, hauling a shiny sander along with a roll of unicorn wrapping paper and hula hoops for a unicorn horn toss: an accurate forensic snapshot of my current state of affairs. “Can we step on it yet?!” asks and eager Adam. “Oh no, not yet,” I reply, pausing the roar of the machine to sip
some water and assess the progress. The last time I ran my hands over something so smooth, I was changing the kids’ diapers. We have skinks that live under the porch and when one crawled up to scurry across, it actually slid several feet. That’s how smooth the boards got. A week and a fresh coat of paint later, we have shiny happy kids playing on a shiny happy porch but there’s that itch again. I’ve got the hoops for the unicorn toss but no horn. Maybe a traffic cone? I know a place where I can rent one. And a stump grinder if I’m lucky. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine Tasting Terms, Residual Sugar Don’t let a little sugar scare you. I agree three donuts for breakfast is not great for the body, but when it comes to wine, a hint of sugar may make all the difference in amazing food pairings. Often when we first learn about wine, we start by drinking sweet whites, moving swiftly to dry whites, then screeching to a halt with reds. People get stuck in reds for decades. For some the road curves back again toward whites, and a true appreciation not of the cotton candy white Zinfandels you first dipped toes, er tongues, into but the sublime creatures tempered with acid. If you want to fly to the stars, the Trockenbeerenausleses of Germany. Fruity vs. sweet: I can taste people on a dry wine and they say it’s sweet, simply because it’s fruity. Fruity doesn’t mean residual sugar; think of a dry Albariño with loads of fruit. Fruit sensations hit your mid-palate; sweetness (sugar) hits the tip of your tongue. Wines with less than 9 grams residual sugar (RS) are dry. In Champagne less
than 6 gms is extra brut and 6–12 gms is brut. The middle ground of demisec, halbtrocken or the word I look for, feinherb, is that region found very roughly between 8–18 gms RS but, depending on the wine, can actually go into the high 20s or 30s. How is that possible? There is a difference between actual sweetness and perceived sweetness. Perceived sweetness is a function of all the components in a wine, like acidity, extract and body, so 9 gms RS will show up in a low acid Pinot Gris but be undetectable in a Mosel Riesling. With acid driven wines, like Mosel Rieslings, the wine may be technically sweet but not perceived as such because of its high acidity. The reverse holds equally true. I find this middle ground of a hint of sugar combined with high acidity perfection because it means more flexibility when pairing with food. There are more combinations of foods that pair with the demi-sec wines than do with completely dry whites. How do you tell which wines have residual sugar? One clue is if the alcohol content is low, meaning not all of the sugars were fermented into alcohol. This is not
always the case, but a good bet when figuring out German Rieslings. So don’t mistake fruit for sugar. And also, don’t be afraid of a little sugar. It may make your food taste better. Selbach Oster, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Riesling, Spätlese, Feinherb, 2016 – And don’t let the long, scary German names scare you either. Focus on the words Zeltinger Sonnenuhr which are the vineyard sites and tell you about the terroir, in this case blue Devonian slate. People assume Spätlese means sweet, and often it does, but what it actually means is late harvest, and as such can be dry. Feinherb is that glorious word I look for that gives a hint at sweetness and body. Pair with blue cheeses, strong cheeses, mackerel or oily fish, crab cakes, chicken livers, and if you’re adventuresome enough to break from red, pair with game; you’ll be amazed. $36.99 Reuscher-Haart, Piesporter, Riesling 2015 – Balanced, with great body. Notes of melon, verbena and stone. Pair with mussels, pumpkin ravioli, cheeses, or spicy foods as the touch of sweetness will counter the heat. Liter bottle: $22.

SEPTEMBER 2018
WILLOW BRANCH It’s high summer in a misty Nellysford garden. The perfect climate for Cathy Coyle to arrange a bouquet of flowers.
Her left hand holds the bunch as her right hand instinctively moves toward the bucket of fresh-cuts to select a stem. Constantly turning and tweaking, the mismatched bucket becomes a fetching bridal bouquet. The colors of wild sweet pea, brilliant rudbekia, and the opulence of full-blown white roses are offset by airy, wild Queen Anne’s Lace. Rusty fern marks the season and makes one wonder why a bride might look far beyond this designer’s gardens to embellish her vows? continued on page 12

Tenacious plants take root in the cracks of sidewalks. And so, Cathy started her collaboration with flowers at an established Georgetown (D.C.) corner flower cart some 40 years ago. The then twenty-something found jobs in D.C. flower shops until the appeal of working with the renowned Georgia Vance lured her to Augusta Valley, VA. Georgia was, and is posthumously, revered as a perfectionist in her floral arrangements. Designed to echo the era of the homes they were gathered for, the usually dried flowers were preserved and arranged in keeping with the period of the house they were presented in.

Cathy says, “When I was working for her I often went home crying.” In spite of a strong artistic and floral design background, keeping step with Georgia was no small task. When Georgia’s sister would relay an urgent message from Georgia, such as, “The dogwood has to be picked right now, Mrs. Vance says!” the “Mrs. Vance” impressed the gravity of the mission. Now when Cathy Coyle feels a bit strained over some wedding flowers she says, “Sometimes when I get stressed working on a wedding I just stop and look out the window and say to myself how much I love being here.”

The majority of the work Willow Branch sees is for the wedding trade in Albemarle and Nelson counties. Cathy is marking trends. Lately the scene has been toward the bouquet that eschews greenery, a heap of blossoms on tied stems leaning toward neutral colors. Returning now is the opulent flowing bouquet with greenery to offset and neutralize stronger colors. Boutonnieres and corsages have turned smaller. “With Pinterest, I’m not the expert anymore,” sighs Cathy. The betrothed scans the popular website for clever ideas no one has thought of, other than the thousands of other people who have already seen the image. She continues, “I’m at the age now, well, I can just speak my mind, I try to convince people that there are so many beautiful local flowers that are in season. It will be much more beautiful than some silly picture shot in California some other month.” Cathy describes her perfect bride, “She comes to me with her colors in mind, tells me when she’s getting married, and gives me a budget.” That’s the easiest and most productive to work with. “They say, ‘Do what you want,’ and then I can do so much!” Albemarle and Nelson County attracts destination weddings making Cathy’s local expertise all the more valuable. Her hand-held bouquet becomes a fingerprint of sorts, specific to the season and what’s in prime bloom at this chosen destination. continued on page 16

“When I’m working on something and it gets too ‘floristy’ I go to my garden and/or the woods and pick something. That makes it right, it makes it better.” Aside from roadside forays, Willow Branch Flowers draws heavily on the assets of some nearby neighbors. Five miles away, Blue Heron Farm, owned and operated by Bev Lacey, and her husband Keith Dix, offers two acres of cutting flowers. Pharsalia, also in Nelson County, specializes in the perennial favorite, peonies. And when the pop culture of Pinterest demands it, Cathy turns to commercial flower resources for hybrid roses and out of season requests. Across the garden path from her workspace Cathy’s step-daughter, Mary Pearl Monnes is working in her own room on an arrangement. Several years a teacher at the now closed Tuckahoe Pre-School in Nellysford, Mary Pearl is taking a patient hand at showing ten-year-old Fiona the finer points of making a flower crown. Cathy allows, “I’m hoping sometime over the next five years Mary Pearl will become me. Then I can get back to art, gardening, keeping my flowers in shape, and hang out with friends.”

In the workrooms that have dreamy views to the stone-terraced gardens spilling away from them, it’s clear this is a gardener’s florist. An ample shelf of white McCoy style pottery stands ready to receive blooms. Dozens of lanterns are stacked to create a fairy-scape on demand. As her husband, Fuzzy Monnes, has laid every handsome stone that creates the hardscape of this fantasy garden, it seems fitting his daughter, Mary Pearl, will weave the petals that soften it under Cathy’s tutelage. Nepeta cataria, catmint, droops its purple blooms under the heavy mist of the day scenting the stone path as Bernie, otherwise redolent of shedding dog, brushes by. Yes, I’d very much like to be a bride-to-be following soft-spoken Cathy and gentle Mary Pearl, through this enchanted space. “These are really early spring gardens. They are absolutely gorgeous, if I do say so myself,” says Cathy. And yet she allows, I’m into January and February now. It’s down time. Load the porch up with wood . . .”. A couple of months ago I saw Cathy at a mutual friend’s home. While the rest of us brought cheese, crackers, wine, Cathy had brought an arrangement. A simple display of coral/ blush tinted snapdragons. As we passed by it I pinched one and told her how I used to tuck lightning bugs in them. “So did I!” she exclaimed. There are places in your heart where the fairies still dance until dawn. Fiona skips down the path, the humid air curling her blonde locks around a circle of pale pink lisianthus and sprigs of feverfew. We show her how to pinch a snapdragon open, however, catching the fireflies is up to her. BRL

According to the CDC, 1in 3 people will get shingles at some point in their life, about 1 million cases per year in the US. Anyone who has had chicken pox is at risk of developing shingles and the risk increases as you get older. The chicken pox virus does not go away but stays dormant in the body. If it reactivates later in life you get shingles. Most people only get shingles once but you can get it 2 or 3 times. Shingles is a painful rash that occurs on one side the body or face and lasts a few weeks. Usually it looks like a stripe on one side and is in the distribution of a nerve. Several days prior to the appearance of the rash there is often pain in the area where the rash develops. If the rash is on your face it can get into your eye and lead to vision loss. The rash can be itchy or mildly painful, or the pain can be excruciating. The most common complication or shingles is called postherpetic neu-
ralgia. This is where the pain persists after the rash has resolved. It usually lasts a few weeks or months, but sometimes can last years and be debilitating. Getting shingles is a big deal and the only way to prevent it is by vaccination. There is a new vaccine called Shingrix which is 90% effective in reducing the incidence of shingles. It is recommended for healthy adults 50 years old and older and is a 2 shot series given at least 2 months apart. If you already received the prior shingles vaccine, Zostavax, you still can get Shingrix. If the above description of shingles does not sound appealing to you and you want to do everything you can to reduce your risk, then you should get Shingrix.

Looking to the future Managing credit to qualify for life events and purchases
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Many of you may recall my daughter featured as a young child in my real estate ads. It is hard to comprehend that she has grown up and is now “adulting”. That cute little kid is in college and just obtained her first credit card and apartment. How she manages her credit worthiness now will determine her ability to get credit in the future. Even though the American Dream of home ownership may seem distant, it is never too early to establish healthy credit habits. Hence, it is important for young adults to understand how credit can impact the ability to make purchases. Building and maintaining good credit can open a lot of doors, and poor credit can make those same doors impossible to open. Here are a few tips to help any prospective purchaser to understand and build good credit. Credit overview - A FICO score is a grade on your overall credit worthiness. Scores range from 300
to 850. Interpreting scores: 800 and up – flawless (18% of the population); 720-799 – excellent; 680-719 – good/ great; 620-679 – average/fair; 580-619 – poor credit; 500-579 – bad credit; Below 500 – start rebuilding! Factors in your score: 35% – Payment history; 30% – Amounts owed; 15% – Length of credit history; 10% – New type of credit; 10% – Types of credit used. Build Credit – Become an authorized user. One of the easiest first steps in building credit is to become an authorized user on someone else’s credit card account. Verify that authorized user activity is reported to credit bureaus. If reported, this can establish credit even though the user is not the primary cardholder. To avoid issues, make sure there is an agreement with the primary cardholder in place for the authorized user to repay the charges he/she makes. Apply for a secured credit card. This is a low risk method for a banking institution to offer credit card charging privileges to people without
Marlo Allen
credit. A deposit held as collateral secures the credit card issued; the cash deposit made upfront will equal the credit limit. Make timely payments to build the desired credit. The purpose is to build enough credit to allow the secured cardholder to qualify for an unsecured card that requires no deposit. When the account is closed, the deposit is refunded. Find a co-signer. See if a guardian or parent will co-sign for a loan. A good opportunity to utilize this option may be when buying a car. The loan applicant (and the co-signer) must qualify for the loan and have sufficient income to pay back the debt. There is also a relationship of trust with the co-signer, who is responsible for the debt in the event that the account holder does not pay. Establish good habits (good everyday practices for new and seasoned credit users) – Make all payments on time! If you have bills, such as utility or cell phone accounts, make sure those are paid on time too,

Marlo sells in every inch of Nelson County! Just sold or pending sale:
so that nothing goes to a collection agency. Late payments or collections on a credit report can significantly reduce the credit score and take many months/years to rebuild. If you have a credit card, keep balances low and ideally not to exceed 30% of the credit limit. Don’t open too many accounts at one time; once opened, keep accounts open to establish a longer history of credit. Periodically check your credit report for issues and/or accuracy; get a free copy of your credit report at www. AnnualCreditReport.com. Establish and maintain good credit so that when you wish to buy, you can qualify! Your credit worthiness may impact your ability to secure a loan, as well as employment, insurance, rental, and/or other necessities of life. STORY by LINDA CROWE PHOTOGRAPHY by STEPHANIE GROSS
A grass by any other name… Manna grass, Mary’s grass, vanilla grass, holy grass, bison grass, Seneca grass, or sweetgrass, has as many uses as it does common names. It has been pressed into service as a cold remedy, cough medicine, a respiratory aid, eyewash, analgesic, a hair wash, perfume, and ceremonial incense, to name a few. Native American tribes use it to cleanse mind, body and spirit, its smoke believed to welcome good spirits and ancestors home. Found in both western and eastern hemispheres, Polish distillers use it to flavor Zubrowka, (translated as bison grass vodka). And now we’re getting a little closer to the reason that Stan Driver is planting, growing and harvesting sweetgrass in Nelson County, Virginia. continued on page 26

Hierochloe odorata, (not to be confused with the southern sweetgrass, Muhlenbergia filipes, used for three centuries by African Americans to make baskets) thrives in more northern climes, all the way up to the Arctic Circle. That makes it a challenge to grow crops of this plant on anything like a production basis down here. But as microbreweries and distilleries continue to make camp in the county and throughout the region, small harvests of sweetgrass, hops and other crops may create new niche markets for local entrepreneurs. Ask Stan Driver where he grew up and he’ll tell you he never did. Ask him how he got to Virginia and he’ll say on a motorcycle. Then he’ll laugh and tell you that as a child, he lived on a tobacco farm in Nash County, North Carolina. Stone masonry brought him to Nelson in the 1970’s. “I’ve always been motivated by what feels right,” he says, as he walks through the field behind the Barrel House, Blue Mountain Brewery’s production facility in Colleen. “[Stone masonry] is rewarding, it’s creative. If you’re good, it’s going to last a while.” Following the crooked road of his curiosity led him to hops. “When I started growing hops, there wasn’t any money in it – there’s still not down here!” He laughs again. “But how much do you really need?” For Driver, it’s about satisfaction in his work, and adjusting expectations. Hops is another plant, he explains, with a more northern range. It struggles to thrive in Virginia, yet he and others manage to pull off small harvests, micro harvests for use in micro brews. Sweetgrass interested Stan and he’d grown it in the past. When he asked Blue Mountain if he could plant it between the rows of hops at the Barrel House, they gave him the go-ahead. The vines of hops sway gently in the breeze on this overcast August day as Driver squats to cut handfuls of the green sweetgrass he’s planted. He gathers a clump the size of a good pony tail, then snips it off a couple of inches above the ground, careful not to disturb the roots. He bundles one end with a rubber band and sets it aside. “It’s meditative work,” he says. It’s peaceful here among the hops. The snip, snip, snipping of the shears provides rhythm to the chorus of distant crickets and cicadas. continued on page 28

He’s not appropriating Native American traditions, but still he treats the crops with respect. This is the second harvest this summer. He uses no pesticides, no fertilizers on his sweetgrass. A perennial plant, it will die back in the winter, then rise again in the spring for the next year’s harvests. A kind of lavender-vanilla perfume infuses the air in Stan’s drying shed, where he employs not high tech, but “farm tech” methods to cure both local hops and his sweetgrass. Good old box fans, the kind most of us had in our college dormitories, which sit face down on top of hand-made drying racks built with hardware cloth hammered and nailed to two-by-fours. Driver places the bundles of green grass he just cut on the racks. Soon the shed his humming with the white noise from the fans as he removes dried bundles from an adjacent rack and places it with others that await braiding. In yet another pile, fragrant stacks of golden green braids await the next phase of their journey. Driver envisions the journey to include
some of the Nelson County brewers and distillers. “Maybe a local sweetgrass vodka,” he says, laying more bundles in his dryer. “or a sweetgrass dry cider.” Meanwhile, down in Durham, North Carolina, Driver’s Virginia sweetgrass is ready to spring into action at Fullsteam Brewery where Head Brewer Brian Mandeville, ever the fan of seasonals, fearlessly adds local basil, sorghum, coffee, sweet potatoes (but no (!) pie spices), persimmon – local anything really, to his small batches. “The beer we have planned [for Driver’s harvest] is going to be a traditional German festbier that will be incorporating a lot of North Carolina-grown and malted grains” he says, “and we plan to use the sweetgrass to add some nice layers of vanilla like tones.” With Fullsteam’s mission “to craft distinctly Southern beer that celebrates the farm and food traditions of the American South,” and Mandeville’s plan to release this batch September or October, Stan Driver’s sweetgrass is poised to find itself in the right time and place. BRL For a deeper dive and a good read, Driver recommends the book, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants, by Dr. Robin Kimmerer.

If you want to know what loyalty looks like, look at Nannette and Arnold Frutkin. “Frut-kin,” Arnold tells me, making sure that I don’t insert an “i” after that “u.” “Frut-kin,” I repeat. We are sitting in a small room off the side of their kitchen. I’m not sure what they call it but it’s part TV room, part eating nook, part home office. A realtor might call it a den but that’s where animals hibernate and even though the sun is certainly setting on the Frutkins’ seven acres, the couple is still out in the wild. Arnold tells me proudly he still mows the lawn. He and Nannette still use the flight of stairs leading up to the second floor. True, there are dings and scratches on the Mini Cooper sitting in the carport, but Nannette just recently picked up a challenging new hobby, needlepoint. Driving a car at 99 can be a lot like threading a needle at any age. continued on page 32

Arnold and Nannette Frutkin have scrapbooks full of memories they’ve collected since they’ve been together, including a copy of the New York Times published the day Nannette was born (left). Both New Yorkers, their careers led them to Washington, DC where they raised a family before retiring to Nelson County. Gone are the days of exotic international business trips and dinners with the Austrian president and his wife (below). Even so, settling down doesn’t mean selling out. Arnold still mows the lawn and Nannette still gets around town in her Mini Cooper. Arnold celebrates is 100th birthday in November and Nannette will turn 100 next June.

Pack A Picnic!
We gather around a small round table and I open up with the most awkward, cliché question you could ever ask anyone about to turn 100. “So what’s the secret?” Nannette — who can hear a little better than Arnold — leans back and smiles as if she’s heard the question before. “Luck. Luck and genes.”

Then she shrugs. “I don’t know. Maybe it was the water in the town where we grew up.” That town was Mt. Vernon, New York, which is just north of New York City in Westchester County. They met in the 7th grade, so around the tail end of Prohibition. “We were just classmates,” Nannette says. “We did not date at all. We were just classmates. In fact, I had crushes on three other people and not on him.” It wasn’t until Arnold was already in college that he made his move. Nannette was in New York City, which is where she had gone to finish high school. “One day the phone rang in New York and the voice said, ‘Is this Nan?’” No one ever called her Nan. It’s Nannette today and it was Nannette decades ago. “‘I don’t think you know who this is’ and I said, ‘Yes, I do. It’s Arnold Frutkin.’” She knew it was him because of his distinctive voice. Arnold was now a Harvard man studying Economics — had he not been as practical, he may have studied English Literature. After graduating with the Class of 1940 — an Irish Catholic from Massachusetts by the name of John F. Kennedy was a fellow classmate –– Arnold and Nannette tied the knot in 1941 and moved to Washington, D.C. where Arnold landed a job at the Department of Labor. Things were getting troublesome in Europe with the English and the French declaring war on Hitler’s Germany, but Arnold and Nannette were living the life of 1940’s-era yuppie newlyweds in Washington. On December 7, 1941, the Frutkins were spending their Sunday playing touch football with other married couples.

After joining the US Navy during World War II, Arnold Frutkin was assigned to this Landing Ship Tank where it went “Island Hopping,” assisting destroyers in helping shoot down Japanese dive bombers. This ship was bombed three times but never sank, sparing its crew.
continued from page 33
“We went up to one of the apartments after the touch football and the girls said there was a radio report that the Japanese bombed a place called Pearl Harbor. None of us had ever heard of Pearl Harbor. We didn’t know where it was.” But they knew where the Japanese embassy was and they made their way there, over to Massachusetts Avenue, where Nannette saw smoke rising over the building. “They were burning their papers,” she recalled. That happened on a Sunday. On Monday, Arnold applied for a commission in the Navy. Which is why he and others of his era got dubbed decades later “The Greatest Generation” by Tom Brokaw. And it’s one of the reasons why this Generation Xer felt like chatting with this pair. Our time here on this planet is finite and for whatever reason, Arnold and Nannette have been able to stop the clock, it seems. To use Nannette’s words, “Luck and genes.” So lets talk about luck. Arnold was assigned to the amphibious forces — “We didn’t even know what they were,” he admits — spending time on an LST, or Landing Ship Tank. Designed to land on a beach, his ship sailed to islands in the Pacific already occupied by the Japanese. They called it “Island Hopping.” “While sitting on the beaches Japanese dive bombers attacked us. We shot down eight of them … There were three hits on our ship but none fatal … One skinned the side of the ship and didn’t explode. One bobbed and rolled around in a fuel compartment for two weeks before it was found. We thought it had gone through the ship and exploded.” Definitely a lucky man. Arnold survived the war and had a wife to come home to. Nannette had gotten a job as a high ranking secretary at the War Production Board. Victory over Europe had just been declared and to hear Nannette tell the story, Arnold looked at her with the proverbial twinkle in his eye. 34

SEPTEMBER 2018
“We were out to dinner with some friends and decided that night we would start a family, and nine months later our first son was born. We had to wait until after the war because we didn’t want a child without a father.” As babies kept booming, young Peter got a sister nearly four years later, Debbie. The Frutkin party of four made their home in the D.C. suburb of Falls Church, which Nannette insists was just a “small town” back in those days. The Beltway — designed as an alternative route for the military around the Nation’s Capital — hadn’t even been built yet. Arnold’s Harvard classmate had yet to become our nation’s 35th President. Skipping ahead to 1963, the Frutkins were on their way to pick up a new car at the dealer, a Chevy Corvair, when they walked into the showroom and saw the news of Kennedy’s assassination on the television. But as grief gripped the nation, the Beltway hummed along. Johnson took over the Presidency, and one late summer evening on the eve of an air show in Paris, Arnold – who by now was working at NASA on international space projects – leaned over to Nannette with a question. “He turned to me and said, ‘Do you want to go to Paris?’ And I said, ‘Sure, when?’ And he said, ‘Tonight.’” Because you don’t turn down a trip to Paris on Air Force One. After all, the Russians were going to be there and President Johnson — in his competitive spirit — wanted to send an American delegation to the event. If the wives joined their husbands, even better! The kids woke up to a note their mother wrote them with instructions regarding money and the neighbors; they were for the most part on their own until mom and dad came back from their surprise trip.
Arnold pushed the speed limit on the way to his boss’s home in D.C., before making their way over to the White House where a chopper flew them to Andrews Air Force base. The Frutkins boarded the Presidential jet and didn’t even have passports! But no worry, flying Air Force One has its privileges and all night, Nannette remembered hearing the typewriter clank away. After landing in Paris along with about 60 other VIPs, an embassy official began handing the Americans passports and envelopes stuffed with French money. “Everywhere we went the red carpet was pulled out and people were clapping and cheering … It was absolutely unreal,” Nannette recalls, a memory more than half a century old seared forever in her mind. “I don’t think I slept the whole weekend.” She abruptly stops to pull out her hearing aid. There’s apparently an electronic voice that tells the user to switch batteries when power runs low and so the conversation is paused. At 99, no one is in a rush.
And so we talk about that a little. The younger generations, how we all seem to be always on the go yet at the same time, many of us are at a developmental standstill when it comes to jobs and family, at least compared to the Frutkins and their generation. Warning: Arnold’s blunt advice that follows may sound harsh but for the record, he never told me to get off his lawn. “They’re being fed a diet of sex and crime on TV which is very bad,” he says of today’s youth but offers, “I don’t think we can blame the younger generation for most of their problems. I think we have to blame the older generation for the diet they raised the younger generation on.” If it all ended at press time — lets hope it doesn’t because Arnold celebrates his 100th birthday in November and Nannette will celebrate her century the following June — the Frutkins have lived a life full of adventure. In a few hours after I leave, they will enjoy dinner at home, independently, just the two of them. “We have a drink every single night before dinner but we never have two drinks.” Nannette nods. “He usually has bourbon and water or scotch and water, and I have rum and Coke or sometimes just a glass of wine.” “And I never smoked a cigarette in my life!” Arnold declares. Doing the math, I’ve spent roughly 99 minutes discussing 99 years. Certainly, we’ve left something out. “We have a story but should we tell it to her?” Nannette says as she turns to Arnold. Being together for decades has made this pair fluent in the unspoken language of glances and gestures and it’s clear that whatever story they were tempted to share, they are keeping it to themselves. “It’s not that important,” Nannette says, ending the interview. At the youthful and naive age of 41, I’ve got 58 years to crack that riddle. BRL
