thepublishers Why, hello there Nick! If a season was ever made for hounds, it would be fall. And as much as I would love to say our handsome tricolored beagle came to us as he darted across the field chasing a fox, Nick’s reason for photo bombing this picture was the sound of Peyton and Adam crunching on pretzel sticks. So the next time you see a tapestry or painting of hounds crowded around a man perched on a horse at a fox hunt, realize that he has a bag of dollar store pretzel sticks tucked away in his fancy red coat. Always wanting to keep up with her big brother, Peyton has decided it is time to challenge gravity. For some reason, we never worried much when Adam was in his somersaulton-the-couch-after-dinner phase. Maybe because he always seemed to be a natural at it and he always stuck the landing. It seems that in all of her three years, Peyton has been quietly observing her brother’s antics. The other day as we were heading to the grocery store, with a serious face, she announced, “Mommy, look I jump!” She jumped off a curb. I know. It’s only about 5 inches high. But to her she thought she had
done something amazing. So she did it again. “I jump!” she squealed. And you know what? Looking back, it was a beautiful jump. She bent her knees, swung her hands forward, and stuck that landing like a proud gymnast. Inside the store, we grabbed a small basket instead of a cart. After filling it up, the little gymnast bent down and took her victory lap, pushing that little basket up and down the aisles. The “judges” at the checkout line smiled as we approached to pay for our things and scan our first item: a bag of pretzel sticks. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Excellence Excellence comes in many forms, even seasonal. I know I’m not alone in loving the month of October, so I think few will dispute the idea of October’s excellence—a month exemplifying transcendent qualities like clarity of light, beautiful lowering temperatures at night, and then, those fall colors, for who can resist blazing orange, yellow and red trees? To many, the shortening days mean death and decay, but to me they feel invigorating and seem to offer a return to what I’ve needed: log fires, long novels, and… rich full-bodied glasses of red wine. Château Musar, 2005 – Musar is excellence personified (vinified?) My love affair with Château Musar began many years ago in Paris, and I probably write more about this wine than any other. Capable of aging for decades, Musar, both the red and the white, is at its best when drunk older, but the 2005 is luminous now. Dried figs, berries, leather and smoky notes. If anyone tells you Lebanon can’t make good wine, take a short trip to the Levant as you open a bottle of
Château Musar and let that someone in for a delicious surprise. $49 Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano 2009 – This is the epitome of what I look for in a wine: small production, well–made, biodynamic, and a committed, understated woman winemaker, Elisabetta Foradori, quietly producing some of Italy’s most exciting reds, at the helm. An extra bonus is a unique grape variety: Teroldego, which is genetically related to Syrah and equally rich and dark with the same cracked black pepper and dark fruit notes. This wine’s rustic, earthiness is Italy (Trentino-Alto Adige) at its best. $28 La Bastide St. Dominique, vieilles vignes, Grenache, 2011 – Excellence doesn’t need to wear an expensive price tag. From Eric Bonnet’s deft hand comes a little wine, from old vines (vieilles vignes) with a big taste. I love old-vine wine because it implies the winemaker is more concerned with quality than quantity. Rich, smooth and full-bodied, with notes of plums and blackberries. All for $12. Loire Valley, vineyards and châteaux. May 2014. Reserve your spot: Kpfaltz@cstone.net.

STORY by SHARON ZOUMBARIS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER
The clang from the blacksmith’s anvil rings across the parking lot as the class of six men and boys and one woman move around the warehouse space stoking fires and beating hot metal with hammers. These modern blacksmiths, sporting bright green earplugs and conventional safety glasses, are in training to learn a skill that has been quietly disappearing from American life, replaced by the ability to buy things, not make things.

Nate, 11, of HIghland County carries a bar of steel from the forge to the anvil as he makes a bar for a hook rack while taking a year long certification class at the Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing, in Waynesboro.
BACK IN THE EARLY 1900S, BLACKSMITHS IN THE U.S. WERE VITAL MEMBERS OF EACH COMMUNITY; THEY REPAIRED EVERYTHING FROM STAGECOACH FRAMES AND WEAPONS TO COOKING UTENSILS AND FURNITURE AND MADE NECESSITIES LIKE NAILS AND CAST IRON POTS.

Blue Ridge LIFE
OCTOBER 2013
Dale Morse, owner and teacher at the Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing (VIB) in Waynesboro is changing that one class at a time. Morse said his school offers students a usable, lifelong skill along with a “real sense of accomplishment.” He added, “Blacksmithing is a test of many different abilities.” Morse said successful students must be strong, have stamina plus math skills, an understanding of economics, and the ability to visualize what is needed to turn a piece of steel into a work of art. Back in the early 1900s, blacksmiths in the U.S. were vital members of each community; they repaired everything from stagecoach frames and weapons to cooking utensils and furniture and made necessities like nails and cast iron pots. Most blacksmiths also took on apprentices, young men who worked for years to fully learn the trade. Morse’s current year-long class includes two young students from Highland County, an 11 year old and a 14 year old. Nate, the youngest of the pair fell in love with blacksmithing on a visit to Mt. Vernon. James, the older and taller of the two, attended a workshop at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, and was hooked. Morse understands how each boy feels, he picked up his first hammer when he was 9 years old. However, he didn’t learn some important skills until he was living in Germany, where he said they take the art very seriously and provide years of training. He added, “between 12 and 14 years old is the perfect age to start learning,” which is why he decided to introduce others in the Shenandoah Valley, especially youngsters, to blacksmithing. He said for safety reasons a parent must attend with any underage student. That requires an even bigger commitment from the young men and their families.

OUTDOOR LIVING AT ITS FINEST In addition to the year-long certificate program, the VIB offers a variety of beginning blacksmith classes, an introduction to welding and to copper jewelry making. In the beginning classes students will make anything from medieval spears, helmets or shields to practical items like camping utensils, door handles and hinges. The certificate program students begin making iron hooks and a candlestick out of what Morse calls mild steel, the low end or softest grade of steel, then progress to more complex pieces like fireplace tools and finally a project of their own design. The school now opens the shop on Tuesday evenings for a small fee for those who want to work on their own projects. Students come from all over the state. Brian Harris, a certificate program participant, travels each week from Chesapeake and plans to make blacksmithing his career. He would have enrolled in a trade program in high school he explained if one had existed. Now he drives several hours to attend class every Friday afternoon plus each first weekend of the month. He is determined to finish the program and receive his VIB certification. Morse and his partner, David Tucciarone founded the school seven years ago. Anyone interested in signing up for the classes can do that online through the Blue Ridge Community College continuing education web page or by using the VIB web page: vablacksmithing.org. Morse believes blacksmithing is now making a comeback and he encourages his students to

Financial ramifications of mortgage loans and rates
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Would you rather pay more or less for a product or service? Sounds like a no brainer, huh? Perhaps you look at grocery store ads in the local paper and find that milk is on sale. What do you do? You drive miles out of your way to “get the deal”. Reflect for a moment and think about your past or current home purchase process… did you, or will you, pick up the phone or drive across town to get a better rate or loan product? Mortgage products vary, and thus comparisons are not always apples to apples, so you may need to rely on a mortgage professional to interpret and guide you through the process. (Selecting the right mortgage professional is just as important as selecting the right real estate agent.) A true mortgage professional should be able to listen to your goals and plans, analyze your broader financial picture, and incorporate those into a loan product that is tailored to your specific needs. When shopping for a loan, here are a few points of consid-
eration that could cost you dearly or save you immensely. Convenience or Cents? Research the lending professional and their products. Make sure that you are selecting the package based on what makes the most sense, and “cents”, and not making a selection just because the lender is a family friend or conveniently located at your local banking institution. Saving today or tomorrow? Don’t select loans based solely on upfront lender fees. A bank waiving or discounting a fee or loan origination charge may seal your fate and secure you a savings on your closings costs, but penalize you in the long term over the next 15, 20, or 30 years of the life of the loan. Long term savings may significantly trump the short term perks. Time is money; rates are on the rise and an increase in interest rates can significantly change the repayment outcomes. Example: Using a standard mortgage calculator at bankrate.com
Marlo Allen
for a $200,000 fixed rate, 30 year loan, a 1% interest rate change from 4.00% to 5.00% results in a higher monthly payment of $119 with an additional $42,773 paid over the life of the loan. In this scenario the borrower would end up paying back more and possibly even jeopardize the ability to qualify for a loan when faced with strict qualifying debt to income ratios. When rates are on the rise, the timing of a home purchase is an essential savings component and perhaps even a critical qualifying condition for many. Be prepared to act; as you shop for a house, you may also want to shop for rates. Unraveling the Puzzle; with a multitude of loan options, it is imperative that the lender decipher the puzzle to best match the borrower and product. For example, if a borrower does not have a 20% down payment, is there a loan available without having to pay private mortgage insurance (PMI)? A borrower using a $200,000 FHA loan may have an estimated monthly PMI payment
434-996-3525
of $225. Depending on how long the purchaser plans to stay in the home, would a fixed rate or adjustable rate program, or a 15 or 30 year loan term, offer savings or qualifying incentives? There are so many situations and scenarios; spend time with the loan officer reviewing options and selecting the best tailor made, and potentially cost-saving, product. Writing this article made me think of my dad. Many of you know me and may be aware of my dad’s passing after a 2 year battle with cancer. His legacy lives on in me daily. Following in his footsteps, I will often walk across a parking lot with my nose to the ground in search of lost change. My dad taught me that every penny counts. As you navigate through life, will you be the one to lose or find that penny? Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. TED HUGHES: MAN OF MANY TALENTS by LYNN COFFEY
I had already retired from the Backroads before meeting Ted and his wife Jane or I would have surely written a feature article about them in the paper. But it was my pleasure to interview them for my new book, Appalachian Heart, and share the wealth of talent Ted has when it comes to restoring early horse drawn vehicles and everything in between. He is one of those people who have the God-given gift of being able to fix and fabricate most anything he sets his mind to. Ted was one of three children born to Lewis and Pauline Hughes and was raised up in the hamlet of Massies Mill. He remembers all the local businesses and proprietors from the 1930s on and loaned wonderful vintage photographs of the village during its heyday, for the new book. The Hughes began their unique business called the Chalk Level Carriage and Buggy Works after Ted retired from his job at VDOT and Jane retired from Contel Telephone Company. His first formal repair

of a horse-drawn vehicle came when he and Jane belonged to a horse riding and driving club and someone needed a wagon repaired. Next they bought a surrey in bad condition and after Ted had brought it back to its original beauty, a local newspaper did an article about it. An undertaker saw the story and inquired about restoring an old hearse. The phone started ringing and hasn’t stopped yet. Near and far, people came to have vintage vehicles restored or were looking to purchase a vehicle Ted finished and had for sale. When asked how many restorations he has done over the years, Ted tries to count but quickly loses sight of the total. Here is a partial list of the horse-drawn vehicles he’s worked on: 28 antique carriages, sleighs and buggies for the Robert Thomas Carriage Museum in Blackstone, Virginia; a vis-a’-vis carriage, a Victoria, a French cabriolet, a Cuban Valente, a Sicilian donkey cart, a water buffalo cart from Siam, several cannons and caissons, an English tub cart, reapers, an early washing machine, an omnibus, two Civil War wagons, a multitude of sleighs, three adult hearses and one white child’s hearse, wagonettes, and a street sweeper from Cincinnati, Ohio. He also completely built from scratch an 1860s Civil War ambulance that a man wanted for his collection. The only pieces Ted did not make for the vehicle were the wheels and the springs. He ordered the specifications for an Army wagon from Fort Lee, and was then invited to take photographs and go behind the scenes to look at the ambulances in the quartermaster museum. The original plans called for pine and walnut wood but the man ordering the vehicle wanted the whole thing built from solid cherry. Fifty pounds of horse hair at twelve dollars a pound was ordered out of Ohio just to stuff the seats with. When finished, the ambulance could carry eight wounded soldiers who were still able to stand or four seriously wounded men who could be placed on fold-down stretchers. Ted said he put in about three hundred hours of labor on the vehicle and it was in his shop for over a year. Each year the Hughes host a Christmas open house, usually held in November for folks who want to see Ted’s work. This year the open house will be on Saturday, November 2, but will have a slightly different twist. Ted has been working on a new project that will be featured at the old Proffitt mill off of Warwick Barn Road in Arrington. Ted has sketched out two maps of Massies Mill showing where all the early businesses and homes were located and named the people who operated and lived there. The second map shows Massies Mill pre-Hurricane Camille and afterwards, with businesses and people who were lost after the devastating hurricane ripped through Nelson County. The Hughes’s daughter Susan, an artist, has added beautiful touches of color illustrations to the maps and both will be available for purchase at the open house. For more information about Ted’s work and the upcoming open house please call the Hughes family at 434-277-5166, and check out the story on page 38. BRL

Fast forward about ten years and you can find some of her more modern work on Facebook using her business name, Jannybyrd. Her future plans include setting up an Etsy account, just as soon as she irons out some business details. “Some people call me Janny, but I just like the name Jannybyrd… be free as a bird, naked as a Jannybyrd,” says Janelle. “You have to be comfortable in what you’re wearing, and sometimes you just wanna wear something where you feel like you’re not wearing anything because you’re so comfortable in it.” This girl’s skills aren’t just cut and dry, however; she’s got some tricks up that handmade sleeve of hers. “I did costuming for the Michie Theater and that was good experience for a while. I’ve made costumes for people who work in the circus, so I’ve made stilt pants. I’d like to make even more costumes but for now I just make dresses.” Somehow able to transition seamlessly from one set of skills to the next, Janelle is still always looking for new ideas. “It’s hard to tell where my style comes from. I just kinda do what works and try out different techniques like alternative ways for not using a zipper, using buttons and elastic,” says Janelle. “My mother was an art teacher and maybe she taught me something there, ya know, as far as doing creative things and thinking outside the box.” Equipped with all the right tulles, Janelle’s success could be a developing pattern. We’ll keep you posted as the story unfolds. BRL

“Nobody ever called me Theodore but my fourth grade teacher in school. Everybody else has known me as Ted.” Ted restores pretty much everything with wheels. “I try to keep it to horse-drawn, but things slowed up a little bit a year or so ago and I took a little automotive turn. We still normally keep two to three years work ahead of us.” Ted used to work for VDOT before he and his wife, Jane, retired. “None of the men in my family lived to be sixty years old. And I never thought I would live to be retirement age. And I always said whenever I get to the point where I can retire, I’m gonna retire. So when they offered that buyout I retired in about three days.” But it didn’t take Ted long before he started up a business of his own, Chalk Level Carriage and Buggy Works. And although the business may have originally began by fixing up an old wagon, many carriages, cannons, surreys and sleighs have moved through his shop since that time. “I been doin’ this 20 years. When I look at a piece I don’t think of it as how much money I’m gonna make, it’s what I can do with it. I’ve always been interested in history. Just about everything I get, I research it: find out what year it was made and what it was used for, if I don’t know.” This past year, when the weather was still cold,

Ted started a new project. Temporarily switching from horse-drawn to hand-drawn, he decided to sketch out a pre-Hurricane Camille map of his hometown, Massies Mill. “This is like it was August 19, 1969. The names that are in red, it either destroyed those buildings or they had to be torn down. This is where my mother was, right here. All my life we lived right there in that house.” Pulling from personal memories and deeds held in the county Court House, Ted has created a historically accurate record of the once booming town. “In ’69 I was workin’ for the telephone company,” Ted explains. “I really did this just for personal reference. I thought, ‘Well maybe someone down the road sometime would be interested in it.’” Ted’s wife Jane says, “He’s had it in his head for a long time and then finally he got down to business with it.” Copies of this map recently became available for sale at the Oakland Museum and will also be available for purchase at the Hughes’ annual open house November 2, which will be held at the old Proffitt Mill in Arrington. “We, normally, every November would have open house at the shop, but this year we gonna have it down at the mill. I’ll grind some cornmeal and Lynn Coffey will be there signing books. It’ll be a good time.” BRL

chamber). I consider it to be a ‘nobrainer’ that an outdoor chimney have the firebox/hearth the same height as a wall that it sits on (around 18-24 inches) so one could sit on the hearth or add a log without having to kneel. The best chimneys are very proportional in size, made of stone, are easily seen from inside the home and are on the extremity of a patio. The fire pit has really begun to spring up in more and more designs since both mobile (metal) and fixed (stone) units are relatively inexpensive. Designs for these are as different and complex as any cross-section of a society since there is no formula for how they are to be constructed. Traditionally fire pits are circular and allow for 360 degrees of enjoyment – in particular on a still night where there is no ‘smoke out zone’. The biggest con on these hardscapes is the landscape bang – they have little magnetic effect on the eye from inside the home. Another obvious issue is the fire hazard since wood burning fire pits send countless sparks sprawling into the midnight sky. Minimum heights and widths are typically around sitting height (18 inches) and 2 ½ feet in width. However, since fire pits are not governed by rules for smoke draw, design modifications are countless and viewing can extend from traditional 360 degrees to 90 degrees (against a structure) – all based on the imagination of the designer and the client. Fire pits also allows for the designer to produce pure original work that may mimic a chimney in some fashions and a fire pit in others. Again, the imagination of the designer is your only governing rule. The best fire pits are in the 18 inch height range, are made of stone, may use high-end gas logs in lieu of traditional firewood (for fire hazard reasons) and are located on a lower deck where viewing from inside the home can be from a higher vantage point.

The Outdoor Chimney & Fire Pit When it comes to patios, chimneys and other hardscapes in the landscape, you really need to take a short list of factors into consideration while contemplating this decision including 1) size of structure, 2) type of material and 3) vantage points. One of my favorites to add to a landscape is either a chimney or a fire pit – both great places to entertain in the landscape year round. Deciding on which one to install is as important as where to install them. The outdoor chimney is a great versatile choice, albeit usually a great deal more expensive than a fire pit. Even when not in use, this structure can be decorated for any season and will absolutely dominate any landscape, whether viewed from inside or outside the home. I can think of no other structure that merits as much attention to placement, in regards to viewing from inside the home, than an outdoor chimney – seeing a winter’s snowfall on your chimney from inside the home will sell you on this fact. The biggest con of a chimney is the enjoyment zone since it only allows less than 180 degrees of viewing while burning. Chimney sizing is critical since if the firebox is too wide or tall in relation to the overall height of the chimney and you are left with a ‘smoker’. There are formulas as to these exact dimensions that should be followed regarding firebox height and width in relation to height of chimney flue. As important as these formulas are the proportions that are met when designing the chimney. A good rule of thumb is half of the firebox width is the thickness of each of the wall that encloses the firebox itself. Therefore if your firebox is 30 inches wide, the wall on the left and right of it should be minimum of 15 inches. Another good rule of thumb is that the width of the firebox is the minimum width of the chimney flue area (once you have cleared the firebox and smoke

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My face hurts. I think I’ve got a sinus infection. What should I do? This time of year that is one of the more common questions I hear. When the weather turns cold and people are indoors together more and more, especially in school, illnesses abound. Germs are passed and it seems everyone gets sick. We’ve all had it: it starts with a scratchy throat or a runny nose. Maybe there is some coughing. A fever isn’t uncommon early on. These symptoms are all part of what we all know as the common cold. Here to make us all miserable for a few days, it is basically a big nuisance. Usually, if you wait it out, it does it’s damage and is gone within a week. The common cold is caused by a virus. As you probably know, there is no medicine that can cure a virus; it just has to run its course. But, sometimes that cold creates the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. (Just think of it, warm thick mucus, a bacteria’s dream!) When that happens, things get worse. A few specific symptoms help to clue

us in to when a cold has become a bacterial sinus infection. Symptoms lasting over seven days (especially if they are worsening), one-sided facial pain, thick nasty colored discharge from one side of the nose, pain into the teeth, and little help from taking over the counter decongestants are all signs that your cold has turned into a bacterial infection. If this is happening, it is time to see your doctor. So, what can we do to avoid getting to this point? Try to avoid getting sick in the first place. Wash your hands often, eat a well balanced diet, drink lots of water, get plenty of exercise and fresh air, and sleep enough (around eight hours for most folks). If a cold is coming on and the sinuses are feeling clogged, try over the counter decongestants (ask your doctor which are safe if you have medical problems). Saline nasal washes can sometimes help. Hope you stay well!

Shin splints As we embark upon my favorite running and hiking season, Autumn, a nagging throbbing pain in the front of the shin can occur when mileage or duration are ramped up. Runners and other athletes often experience pain in the front of their shins that can ache with each step. It is common in dancers and runners. Termed “shin splints”, the pain is experienced when there is a rapid increase in exercise intensity or mileage for runners. It occurs when athletes change sports; for example, cross country season ends and the athlete is now playing basketball – the surface on which he or she is running has changed. Individuals who are flat footed or “overpronate,” meaning there is no arch in the foot in the standing position, are likely to get this syndrome. The pain in the front of the shins may also indicate stress fractures which are tiny breaks in the bone. Healing time varies among individuals. As expected, resting from running is necessary for healing.
Cold packs are helpful to manage the pain and inflammation. Individuals may take anti-inflammatory medication (check with your doctor). Shoe inserts specific for your foot type to align and support the foot are usually indicated. Neoprene supports for the lower leg are helpful when returning to running. Stretching and strengthening exercises prescribed by a licensed physical therapist can improve your performance and pain. And a gradual return to exercise in necessary. How do you know when you are ready to return to sports? First, during the injured period, it is important to stay fit with another activity such as swimming or biking. This will keep your muscles conditioned and you will return to 100% at a faster pace than if you did nothing. Good markers of readiness when returning to sport are the reduction of pain, full strength and flexibility and pain free running and jumping. It is important to listen to your body and allow it to heal completely to avoid further injury.
