thepublishers There’s this great toy you’ll see in every store. It’s called BOX. They come in all shapes and sizes. And they look fabulous on a front porch, especially after they’ve been crayoned over and stabbed with scissors (air holes). There have been many times Tommy and I have been tempted to “disappear them” but every time we catch Adam reading in it with his glow sticks, or see Peyton tucked in with a pillow and her Hello Kitty memorabilia, we change our minds for another week. The campfire at our new place is out by the creek and thanks to the remains of a pine taken down by a monster windstorm, we’ve got plenty to burn. Although the kids love to hang out with us around the fire (Peyton: “Mommy, I want a S’more. But no cracker and no marshmallow. I like chocolate!”), they are just as happy playing “boat” in the kitchen sink. It’s a good thing we have direct line of sight between the campfire and the kitchen marina. The other evening we had stepped out of view from Peyton’s perch near the kitchen sink window to chat with a friend who stopped by to drop off some hay cutting equipment. It wasn’t long before we heard Pey-

ton’s wails and I immediately braced myself for a maritime emergency. I met her at the back door where she had been panning her head from side to side looking for us. “Sweetheart, we were just around the corner,” I told her as I knelt down to pick up her up. In between sobs, my little girl scolded me. “Mommy, you cannot leave me!” Mommy, you cannot leave me. It was then I hugged her so close and so tight and thought of the fear children experience when they get separated from their parents. Wiping her salty tears away, Peyton finally settled down and wiggled herself off me. “Are you okay, my love?” I asked. “Mommy, you stay at the campfire. I’m playing boat.” Boat or Box. We’ll never leave you. Happy Birthday (6 and 4)! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2014

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Gratitude Of all the months October may be the most beloved. I try hard not to choose, try hard to love the moment or month in which I find myself, but oh October, you do entice. The days shorten and cool yet the light gains clarity, while colours intensify, and as these changes become our norm, at least for a short while, it’s hard not to feel grateful and rejoice. October begins the ascent of an inward, introspective time which I’ll pick up again in November. It’s a time for log fires and books. It’s the time when hearty soups packed with autumnal bounty—butternut and acorn squashes, chanterelles and collards—replace cool tomato, basil or cucumber-based salads. And it’s a time when red wine trades places with white. Celler Escoda-Sanahuja Coll del Sabater, 2006 - is a perfect fall wine that has my heart, or perhaps my taste buds, singing. It typifies everything best in a good fall-hearty wine. From the region of Conca de Barberà, just north of Priorat and Monsant in Spain’s Catalonia, it’s

biodynamic with very little sulfites added (.01 grams). You’ll find a blend not of typical Spanish grapes, but of Bordeaux grapes, Cabernet Franc 60 % and Merlot 40 %. The melodious name means “the path of the shoemaker” and there’s a beautiful wild boar head on the label. Apparently the wild boars roam the vineyards, and when I asked if their tramplings damaged the grapes, I was told that in fact the boars aerated the soil, working in exemplary harmony with the biodynamic principles. If, on the few occasions when too many of the wild pigs came into the vineyard and began harming the vines, well, then wild boar simply became dinner for a week … or so. It was the nose of this wine with which I first fell in love, as it’s earthy, with barnyard and funk. And no, it doesn’t taste like a funky barnyard, but often that stinky nose is the sign of a good wine, either that or a wine with some age. At already eight years old, its tannins have mellowed leaving a smooth and complex wine

waiting for you and the log fire— one beautiful advantage of buying wines with a bit of age. On the palate there’s a full and meaty but round mouth-feel. A country away, on Bordeaux’s right bank, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are king (over Cabernet Sauvignon on the left bank.) Think of the great Cheval Blanc, a wine that is velvety and soft when aged. Coll del Sabater is rich and rustic, and a fraction the price of Cheval Blanc. $32 And for a bargain this fall, for we all love a bargain, try: La Ferla, Nero d’Avola, 2011 – d’Avola, which translates to “the black grape of Avola,” reigns in Sicily where this little gem is made. I could describe its soft, silky body the way the wine forums do: nose of crushed rose petals and sweet cherries, powerful black cherry and blackberry aromas, clove, spice and so on. But I prefer the descriptions of my wine tasting students: “strawberry and plum preserves meet Morello cherries and it’s AWESOME for the price.” I agree. $11

“I’ve been growing sorghum off and on for about 15 years,” said 30-year Clifford Ruritan Club veteran Glenn Clayton. “You plant in early May and try to cultivate a couple of times, put a little fertilizer on it and hope mother nature doesn’t do you in with not enough or too much rain.” It’s not all the time that the Ruritan Club is on the cutting edge of today’s trends, but after almost 30 years of hosting the Sorghum Festival it’s become more than just a fun weekend for families. Sorghum has been used for centuries, but these days a lot of its popularity comes from the fact that safe to eat for the millions of people who now live gluten free lives. But of course dietary restrictions are not the reason for the Clifford Sorghum Festival. No, the annual festival’s focus is much more fun than that, plus it’s the Clifford Ruritans biggest event of the year and helps them give back to the community on a large scale. 10

Each year, the Clifford Ruritans unload the cut sorghum, mill it, and cook it into the naturally gluten free syrup. Since these pictures were taken, the sorghum shack has gotten a face lift, but the methods used to make the syrup remain the same.

said Clifford Ruritan Club Member Eddie Fletcher, a farmer by trade who has volunteered many-a-year to grow a few acres of sorghum for the festival. “The money goes to volunteers at the fire department, the rescue squad. We also sponsor a scholarship for our students, a $1,000 scholarship, and we keep a certain amount of cash on hand so if there’s an emergency in the community we can respond. If you get a house burnt down, you don’t need no check. You need something right there to buy yourself something to eat. Everybody appreciates what we’re doing because we’re doing it and we’re giving it to them.” But the festival’s also a lot of fun. The first weekend of every October represents a weekend full of old-fashioned sorghum syrup making, traditional Virginia music and food (including Brunswick stew!), historical presentations, kids activities and even the Virginia State Jousting Championship.

Sorghum isn’t as common these days, like it was a hundred years ago, but it’s still really popular among those who know what it has to offer. “A lot of people live and die by the sorghum,” said Clifford Ruritan Club President John Taylor. “People look forward to it, seeing how they make it and press it.” When the festival was first started, Glenn would volunteer to grow the annual sorghum stock on his land for the festival, but in recent years the festival

has grown so fast that several members grow the wheat-like plant and combine it with additional stalks purchased locally before taking it to be milled into the syrup. .“You can use it in place of brown sugar,” said Glenn. “It’s good in ginger snaps, good in baked beans, good making barbecue sauce.” Eddie disagrees “A lot of people like it in gingerbread,” he said, “but I like mine in sweet potato pie!” BRL

We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that cause harm to your skin & eyes, not to mention destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They are made for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. Wounded Warriors have scars you see and scars you don’t see. For Alexander Davis, the good news is he’s back

HOME TO HEAL

Pastor Chris Winans of Restoration Cornerstone baptizes Alexander Davis in the Rockfish River at a recent homecoming. Alexander was wounded in a helicopter crash while serving in Afghanistan.

Alexander Davis always knew he wanted to be in the army, so when he walked into a recruiter’s office in December of 2012 (just 18 months after marrying his high school sweetheart at the age of 19), no one was really surprised. “It was always something that I really wanted to do and I felt led to do,” said the 22-year-old Army Specialist. “My father was in the army and I really looked up to people that were so selfless that they would put other people and the country in front of them. I knew how much my wife and my family and friends mean to me and I would risk my life to know that they would be okay. I was young, but I remember 9-11. Growing up in this time where we’ve been at war for so long, the war on terrorism, I really wanted to do my part. To really make a difference and feel like I was doing something important to

give back to my country that I love so much and am blessed to live in.” But no one knew how difficult the first couple of years would be. Alexander knew he wanted to be an infantryman, a role that is often considered the backbone of the army, so he had to wait a few months for a position to open up. But once it did, things started to move quickly. He left his wife at home (in Nellysford) and went to basic training and advanced individual training in Fort Benning, GA on March 26, 2013 and had graduated from infantry training by mid-July 2013. “In the first year of being in the army, we were away from each other for collectively eight months, with all the training and some deployment time,” said Alexander’s wife, Heidi Davis. “Plus the rest of the deployment, which was supposed to be nine months.” continued on page 20

continued from page 19

Heidi says “supposed to be” because before the end of Alexander’s deployment in Afghanistan that started on January 23, 2014, his unit, an aerial reaction force that provided security for medevac missions, was involved in a helicopter crash. “I remember seeing fire and sparks and we started to spin. It was so rough. Like the roughest roller coaster and turbulence in an airplane. And at this point I was like, ‘We’re crashing,’” remembers Alexander. “And when we hit I must have hit my head because I was completely passed out and woke up about 100 feet away from the crash – I got thrown pretty far.” With his team leader’s help, he got back to the crash site where another helicopter would eventually pick up everyone involved in the crash, including Alexander’s best friend Jake Wykstra who lost his life that day. Everyone else suffered injuries, as well, and Alexander’s were pretty severe, though he didn’t know it while the adrenaline was pumping. PHOTO COURTESY : JOANN ALBERTSON

Alexander Davis poses with his friend, Jake Wykstra, who did not survive the helicopter crash (above). Davis and his wife, Heidi, were able to reconnect with friends and family after a proper homecoming in Crozet.

“Tech (my team leader) sat me down and said ‘I need you right now to remember your training and do what you need to do,’ and at that point I knew I had to just focus and do whatever I could do to help my brothers out as much as I could in a bad situation,” he said. “When you’re over there, you care more about the person next to you than yourself.” Alexander suffered a shattered arm (in four places), a compound fracture in his leg, a fractured back, and a deflated lung. He, along with the others who were injured were flown to Germany and then almost directly to Walter Reed where the most

critical patients were off-loaded for emergency surgery. Alexander continued to San Antonio, where he is still undergoing physical therapy. But since Alexander had such an abrupt end to his tour of duty, he didn’t get the warm welcome home that a veteran deserves, and his community couldn’t stand for that. During a recent visit home to Crozet, his community pulled out all the stops. It started with a baptism on the Rockfish River in Nellysford by Pastor Chris Winans of Restoration Cornerstone. The group then gathered at a gas station in Greenwood before caravaning to

Elk Mountain Contracting Specializing in handcrafted log cabins and restoration work. Also buying old cabins & barns.

the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department, where Alexander was met by Fishburne Military Academy cadets and local war veterans. It’s the kind of welcome the wounded warrior deserved. “When they came back they were flown to Texas and taken by an ambulance to the hospital all drugged up on pain medication so they didn’t get any type of welcome home like you do when you come home from Afghanistan back to the barracks with all your friends and family,” said Alexander’s father, Todd Davis. “I wanted to make him feel like he was coming home.” BRL

Tips that can reduce home inspection anxiety and surprises

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

The home sale journey is S-T-R-E-S-S-F-U-L-L enough, without piling on the unexpected. In today’s real estate market, getting a ratified purchase contract is just half the battle because the mission is not accomplished until arriving at the closing table. The closing process can be riddled with obstacles and often the main culprit is the dreaded… home inspection. Sellers can rest assured that most buyers are going to make the contract to purchase contingent upon the home inspection, so why not prepare for it in advance. The best way to mitigate home repair surprises may be to have a pre-listing home inspection. This exercise can detect potential problems and allow ample time to correct them without alarming future buyers. However, even if a seller does not perform a complete home inspection in advance of listing, performing the following maintenance checks, prior to a buyer’s home inspection, can help eliminate last

minute repair and closing hassles. • Ensure that water, electric and gas services are connected. With gas systems, the pilot light should also be burning. • Remove anything that may block access to HVAC equipment, electric service panels, water heaters, attics, and crawl spaces. Unlock areas that the inspector must access - attic doors or hatches, closets, gates, and crawl spaces. Trim tree limbs and shrubs from the house to allow access to exterior perimeter. • Replace burned out bulbs to avoid a “light is inoperable” report that may suggest an electrical problem; also replace dead batteries in smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. • Clean or replace dirty HVAC filters. In addition, have the heating and cooling system serviced by a licensed professional. • Check under cabinets for plumbing leaks and caulk around sinks, tubs, and showers.

Marlo Allen

• Remove stored items such as wood and debris from within and around the foundation; these items may be cited as “conducive conditions” for termites. • Check the crawl space for standing water or signs of high humidity; excessive moisture can feed fungus and/or mold and can result in costly remediation repairs. • Clean gutters and downspouts and insert drain extensions if needed to ensure that water is being carried away from the foundation. • Attend to broken or missing items such as electrical cover plates, doorknobs, locks, latches, windowpanes, screens, gutters, and downspouts. • Inspect the roof for missing or broken shingles and cracked or damaged vent cap boots to ensure that there is no water intrusion. • Perform a safety check! Have the chimney professionally cleaned and inspected, and install chimney hoods and caps as needed. Test auto

Insist on that girl!

The Virginia Association of Realtors revised the home inspection contingency addendum in 2014 and it now permits a buyer to terminate the contract if the results of the inspection are unsatisfactory to purchaser… at the purchaser’s sole discretion. The best way to ensure that your offer to purchase will survive the home inspection contingency is to make sure that you understand the condition of the home and have properly prepared for the buyer’s inspection. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

OCTOBER 2014

In a time when everything is going digital, there’s just no beating the local, outdoor activities (drinking, eating, playing, and shopping) that Nelson County has to offer. Well there wasn’t. Now, however, there’s an app that’ll help locals and tourists alike make the most out of their leisure time. “Originally when Nelson 151 formed, we were just trying to get [people] to see one brewery or two wineries, but we banded together - the wineries and the breweries and the cideries and the distilleries and over the last 10 years people are coming for the breweries, for the wineries,” said George Hodson, president of the Nelson 151 organization and general manager at Veritas Vineyards & Winery. “We want to make sure when they come to Nelson that they’re well informed of the options around them.” The new Nelson 151 App (available for iPhone and Android phones) gives people - locals and visitors both - a single location to find places to eat, places to drink, places to shop, and places to stay. And it seems like people are really enjoying it - the app has had more than 1,000 downloads in its first two weeks. The organization decided to create the app because as a group they had nothing explicitly theirs. “We wanted to expand the scope of the tourism we were promoting as an organization,” said George. “The most important thing is to increase interaction between visitors and businesses; making sure they knew everything that was available to them while they were along the trail. We realized that people are using their phones primarily in trip planning, especially once they’re out and doing things. The app was a perfect fit.” The app took only four months to make and is already expecting version two out soon. But George - and everyone involved with Nelson 151 - knows how much the area has to offer and wants to make sure everyone has the chance to enjoy its riches. Now and into the future. “The things that drew us to opening our businesses in this count, we want to make sure they stick around as the county continues to grow,” he said. “The thing we’re really trying to convey is that as the businesses in the community, we love the community. We’re trying to promote tourism in Nelson County that allows commerce to grow and also preserve the integrity, the agrarian rurality of it.” BRL

A WOMAN @ LOCKN’ Nelson County’s population nearly tripled as the Lockn’ music festival brought in an estimated 30,000 people from all over the country. With the height of the daily lineup including The String Cheese Incident, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Allman Brothers Band, and Willie Nelson, each day was a different experience at this four-day festival in September. Enough time has passed that you’ve probably read your fair share of Lockn’ articles. You’ve read about how the festival was a general success, how it was more organized and executed in a smoother fashion compared to last year, and about how the arrest rates were present, but low. And if you followed my daily posts on the Blue Ridge Life Facebook page or website, then you also know that as a woman in Lockn’, I broke out of the generic journalistic guidelines. As someone who camped, and partied, and participated in each of the four day’s events, I can tell you with authority that it was both a physical and a mental marathon. Multiple elements factored into the whole “experience” equation, such as the people, the food, the camping, and of course the music. And with mixed reviews from the public, I discussed the highs and lows of each day, choosing an unfiltered, uncensored tone that I found appropriate for the setting. I wrote about Lockn’ from my vantage point: through the eyes of a local woman in her mid-twenties flirting with sobriety. A woman who loves music and people and adventure. A woman who commonly refers to herself as a “clean hippie” – a free-spirited individual who veers from the conventional and chooses her own course. I used words soaked in sarcasm and honesty and personality, with sign offs like, Marcie ‘nothing in moderation’ Gates, Marcie ‘my words make waves’ Gates, and my personal favorite, Marcie ‘mind over bladder’ Gates. If you missed those lighthearted and cheeky blogs, then I suggest you give them a read, and especially the responses that followed. For the sake of this article, I’ll recap. Mornings started early, either from the heat or the sound of the festival goers around me. I enjoyed what is coined as a pirate shower, soaking a handful of paper towels with cold, clean water and wiping my entire body down. As each member of our campsite compound steadily streamed out of their tents, we all gathered in the tall grass for a quiet hour together before we braced ourselves to join the masses. Within ten minutes of conquering the trek from the campsite to the main

stage every day, I always had my hands full. One hand with a cold Shandy from the South Street beer tent, and in the other hand, either a wood-fired pizza from Blue Ridge Pizza Company or a burrito from the Sexi Mexi booth located in the Local tent. Oddly enough, despite the fact that I was at a music festival, watching the music wasn’t always my highest priority. The sounds coming from the stage were loud enough that they covered the grounds, sort of like a surround-sound system, but for acres of outdoor venue. And with all the vendors displaying their arts and crafts and personalities, there was always something, or someone, to be looking at while the music served as a background. Like a moth to the flame, I did find myself drawn towards the main stage for a few performers, none of whom I had even heard of before. A funky, soulful group originally from New Orleans, aptly named the Revivalists, absolutely stole my heart from the moment vocalist David Shaw stepped on stage. He and his curly locks bounced around stage and through the crowd and filled the audience with an electricity that gave me chills in the ninety degree weather. With every day that went by, I wore less and less clothing, finding any excuse to bronze my shoulders evenly under the blazing sun. This may or may not have directly contributed to my ability to get golf-cart rides from the main stage to the triangle stage where local celebrity Sally Rose performed on day three. And let me tell you, in a semi-confined space in a group of thousands of strangers, spotting her familiar face gave me the feeling of coming home again. Every evening I walked back to my daddy’s Ford truck I fashioned as a temporary home, happy to be distancing myself from the condensed chaos of the crowd. Hand-in-hand with my beau, guided by the light of the full moon, no words needed to be spoken. We were mutually conscious of the fact that we had been, and still were, a part of something bigger. Something that only us and those 30,000 other people would understand. Even though Arrington is practically in my backyard, Lockn’ did an outstanding job of creating a whole new world within those grounds. A world where for the most part everyone is happy. Both drunk on love and high on life, and maybe some other things. Signing off, BRL Marcie, ‘my work here is done’, Gates

Presley Pippin is a self-described over achiever. “I’ve looked at colleges and scholarships since I was in 9th grade,” said the Nelson County High School senior. “I wanted to be the first one to see them.” Presley’s older cousin (who was more of an older sister) recently graduated with a business degree from Lynchburg College, but neither Presley’s biological parents nor the aunt and uncle who raised her went to college. Even as a first generation college student, Presley always knew that a four-year university was in her future. “I am the type of person who has loved learning,” said Presley, who wants to major in psychology. “I always feel like its something the world will always need – people with a passion about learning.” But even for the most over prepared of teenagers, there is a lot (a LOT) to learn about the college application process. “Our guidance counselors are very helpful, but they get busy with scheduling and parents,” said Presley. “But with Ms. Hawes you can email her and tell her you’re coming and she’ll set aside all the stuff she’s doing to get us what we need.” Rebecca Hawes is a 2014 UVa graduate working as part of the College Advising Corps, an AmeriCorps program that helps to increase college access for low income, under accessed and first generation college students.

“I know when I first I was first applying to college, I didn’t feel like I had a lot of guidance,” said Rebecca, who is considered a “near peer” to the high school juniors and seniors she advises. “So helping them through the process and being someone they could lean on to get through it ... I saw a need for it.” Rebecca earns a living allowance for her service, but because the College Advising Corps is not funded by the state or the University, advisers are only placed where there is a funding source. “I would like to shout out to all of our funders at the Nelson County Community Fund for being able to fund this program,” said Rebecca about the organization that has been a big supporter of the College Advising Program for the last two years. “It’s such a great program for the kids who are juniors and seniors in high school; they have an extra resource when they’re thinking about what they’re going to do after graduation.” The Nelson County Community Fund has awarded grants to more than 50 local organizations by collaborating with nonprofits, funders, community leaders and other partners. One of its biggest annual fundraisers is the Opportunity Ball, which will be held this year on October 24 at Veritas Vineyard and Winery. sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

All Japanese Maples Are NOT Created Equal Many years ago, in the shadows of Mount Hood in northern Oregon, I worked for a company that grew and sold Japanese Maples (among many other genera). Previously, I had been under the impression that all Japanese maples were created equally and about the same – dwarf, cut leaf plants that rarely exceeded 4-6 feet tall and wide ranging in color from light green to burnt red. Under the wing of my boss, Toby, I quickly learned that Japanese maples also grow up and out and have wonderful spring, summer and fall color and fit even the smallest of yards or applications. So let’s venture outside of the comfort zone and learn what these plants are, where they best work and why you should shell out the extra cash for these bounties. Full disclosure: I love these trees, have been growing them since I was sporting parachute pants and dancing to Footloose – not to mention the majority of these are planted around my current house. All zone 5, palmate, need well-drained soil and deserve a prominent spot close to a deck, patio or other area where they will quickly become the envy of your nerdy garden friends. At the top of a short list is my personal favorite, Sango Kaku or the Coral Bark Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’). Growing to around 18 feet x 15 feet wide, the Coral Bark Jap Maple boasts deep green, palmate (lobed) summer foliage that turns a nice yellow/orange in fall. Just when you think the music has stopped, the foliage senesces and floats to the ground revealing bark of an almost burnt rose color all over hence the name Coral Bark Maple. The effect is quite nice in the winter months, in particular for a Japanese Maple which are mostly known for neat foliage and habit.

If you are more interested in blazing fall color, Osakazuki will deliver (Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’). Imagine the notorious (and invasive) burning bush in a tree form that grows to around 10-12 feet in height with a width of around 8 feet or so. That is Osakazuki. The rich, iridescent red fall color of this specimen is truly one of the best in the business and seems to almost glow at dusk. Palmate foliage is a rich green in summer and the tree is an upright in growth habit. Acer palmatum ‘Aconitifolium’ could be one of my most favorite trees of all time. This particular specimen has almost fan-like, palmate, medium green foliage in the summer that turns a truly radiant orange/yellow in the fall – imagine a wacky scientific experiment where a Sugar Maple’s fall color are infused into a tree that has butterfly wings for foliage. Ok, I failed miserably in that analogy but I bet you got the image and are about to type this name into a Google search bar. Mission accomplished. Grows to around 10-12 feet or so and about 8-10 feet wide. Palmatifolium is another green variety that has ‘Sugar Maple fall color’ – truly blazing. With 11 lobes per leaf on palmate foliage, Acer shirasawanum ‘Palmatifolium’ has medium green summer color and will grow to around 20 feet tall by 15 feet wide in as many years. Know it for great fall color and sturdy upright growth. And for all you ‘I love maroon leaved foliage plants in the summer’ (which I don’t), ‘Bloodgood’ is sure to dazzle. Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ is probably the best known of all upright Acer palmatum species due to its, yes, maroon colored foliage coupled with a dependable, bluechip plant that delivers on all counts. This one grows to 20 feet tall and about equally wide sporting crimson red fall color.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, Why can’t I sleep?!

Discover why

The list of causes for insomnia is long. (Maybe reading the whole list over and over would put you to sleep!) Some of the more common causes include use of caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, decongestants, or other medical problems like asthma, allergies, depression, anxiety, sleep apnea or even just plain old stress. As we age it is often natural to get less sleep when we want it (at night). Seeing your doctor to look into the cause of insomnia is always a good idea, but before you do, there are some easy things to try at home first. Just about everyone knows that trying hard to sleep is a sure way to stay awake. Instead, focus your energy on good sleep habits. Make sure to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, especially in the evening hours. Don’t get into bed until you are actually sleepy, and set an alarm so you get up at the same time each day. Use the bed only for sleep, not as a place to read or watch TV.

Afton Family Medicine

People Trust

Instead, read (preferably something boring) in a chair outside of the bedroom until you feel sleepy, and then get in bed. If you aren’t asleep within about 20 minutes, get up and do something else quiet and relaxing and try again. Get good exercise and fresh air every day. Patients often come in asking for sleep aids, or are already taking over the counter aids. My quick advice on that is: stay away. In general most of the over the counter sleep meds can cause drowsiness the next day, and can cause even more side effects in the elderly. Many of the prescription sleep aids have recently come under fire, and for good reason. The side effects outweigh the benefits most of the time. Sweat dreams!

theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Visualization and Meditation to Lift Your Performance Athletes at all levels have used visualization for decades to mentally prepare for an event. The mental preparation and self -talk is powerful in getting and keeping your head in the moment. In contrast, negative self- talk can psych yourself right out of the prize. What about the weekend warrior? Is the time spent on visualization and meditation just as effective? Absolutely. Not only on the playing field, but there is also a positive carry over into family and work settings. How to begin? 1. Find a comfortable chair or lie down (but not with the intention of napping!). Place your bare feet on the floor, legs uncrossed, spine supported and arms relaxed. 2. Close your eyes. Soften the muscles around your eyes and mouth. 3. Bring your awareness to your breath. Notice the breath and your chest rising and falling as you inhale and exhale. Continue and soften all body parts, letting go of tension in the shoulders.

GOOD NEWS! George Luzaich of Five Star Fitness and Agnes F. Schrider of Nelson Wellness Center are pleased to announce that we are joining forces to work together to promote fitness and health.

4. Now bring your focus to your sport. Visualize yourself playing in top form. Rehearse your successful performance over and over. Give yourself positive feedback. (examples: “I feel good.” “I am accomplishing this.” “I have the strength to complete this.” “I can do it.”) 5. Then return to your breathing pattern. Taking the time to focus on the mental aspect of sports performance is a piece of training that is as vital as the strength and technique components. How many events or games have been lost due to mental errors? Countless. We see it each week in a variety of arenas on TV. Practicing visualization and mindfulness techniques where we stop and become conscious of each action we perform helps to process the many obstacles that are hurled at us each day. It reduces anxiety, stress, blood pressure and heart rate. And, it lessens our reactivity to stressful situations. We think and see clearer. It hones
