thepublishers As I was packing my stuff to leave for a solo trip to Bath County for my first marathon, Peyton stopped me and asked me a serious question. “Who are you going to snuggle with?” I smiled and told her I’d be alone for one night but would snuggle with daddy when I got back. The answer didn’t suit her. “No, you need an animal!” she said, and ran up to her room to pick one out. She came bouncing back with “Wow Wow,” my fuzzy white childhood teddy that was now hers. I gave Tommy and the kids one last hug and left the driveway with Wow Wow riding shotgun. The trail race was made up of two half marathon loops. It was during that second loop, alone for a long time in the woods, that my mind began wandering. The race was far from over and all I wanted to do was get back home. Miles away from my family in the wilderness, I started chatting with Tommy and to Adam and to Peyton, and to someone I hadn’t quite met in person. I began busying my brain with math tricks every time I saw a mile marker. As my pace began to really slow, I tried matching the beat of my legs with a song to keep my mind occupied. All I could come up with was “Don’t Worry

Baby” by the Beach Boys. So yes, if you one day hear from a hiker who claims he heard the sound of a woman singing surf tunes echoing through the mountains, he is correct. After hours on the trails apparently trying to fill some big gaping void in my life, I saw the finish line and sprinted for it. Though my legs needed an ice bath, I opted for a plate full of pasta salad and grilled chicken before driving home. Home. I rolled to a stop and climbed out of the Jeep with the finesse of a rusty Tin Man, inching my way to the front porch. The kids came rushing out to meet me. Peyton saw me limping and declared, “Mummy, you ran too far!” Don’t worry baby. Everything will turn out alright. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford OCTOBER 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2015

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

When Light Shines through Darkness In September I visited the south of France with group, many of whom set out as strangers, but returned vowing to gather, laugh and reminisce once back at stateside homes. The French have a saying, “il est bien dans sa peau,” literally “he is at home in his skin,” which means to be contented or at ease. Such a level of comfort and contentment is what happens whenever we find kindred spirits or that place we call home. For most, home is where love is, where your family is, human or otherwise. Nelson County is my first love, but there is a mentality of life in France that just makes sense, and it begins with the daily markets yet encompasses much more. In Provence, the markets are a way of life and their infectious joy spreads through streets in wafts of baking croissants, and the pervasive smell of lavender, lemon verbena, honey, spices and briny olives; and then the colors, the colors of sunshine: ochre and green buildings, yellow and blue Provençal fabrics, terra cotta ceramics. I felt my face grinning as I watched a gnarled old lady discussing in earnest

with the vendor exactly when a particular pumpkin was plucked from its vine. We sampled local cheeses and olive oils, and munched on artisan chocolate. We strolled, kicking up autumn leaves from the plane trees in the cobbled streets, as the shortening days brought the hour of the aperitif ever closer—the time the French call entre chien et loup, (between dog and wolf) when the day gives way to night, but for a moment dusk reigns and it’s that twilight time, like dawn, that exists between worlds. Of the vineyards we visited, all owned by hardworking farmers of the vine, one stood out for the kind of spirit that will shine even in darkness. I offer a tribute to Christophe Delorme of Domaine de la Mordorée who died this past June at age fiftytwo. Christophe was the Hollywood handsome winemaker of this estate, hand harvesting all his grapes in an appellation, (Tavel) where mechanized harvesting has always been the norm and anything else frowned upon. Christophe was also an ardent believer in organic farming and drastically reduced yields, and his wines are a living testament to his ideals,

drinking well in poor years, and, in good years, selling out in a New York minute. And, no surprise, one of Christophe’s fans was Robert Parker, who called Mordorée, “one of the world’s greatest wine estates.” Christophe’s father and brother, Fabrice, will continue the Mordorée tradition, illustrating life’s silver lining—that little edge of cloud where sunlight slips around the darkness, illuminating what’s best in life and, with time, always grows. We raise a glass to Christophe Delorme, who leaves behind many great wines that have made a great many people happy. Domaine de la Mordorée, Tavel, Dame Rousse, 2014 (organic) – The Dame Rousse, or “red lady” is a reference to the mordorée (woodcock) whose migratory route flies over the estate. Look for “aromas of crystallized oranges and cherries, hints of aniseed.” $24.99 Domaine de la Mordorée, Côtes du Rhône, 2014 (organic) – Notes of blackberry, dark cherry and leather in this medium to full-bodied red that is as gracious and handsome as its maker. $16.99

“The pawpaw is like a pudding when you extract the seeds; it’s very yellow and custard like.” – Michael McConkey Edible Landscapes

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2015

If you hear the words “Edible Landscaping” and think “Candyland,” you’re actually not too far off. Except instead of a Peppermint Forest, you might have a lingonberry-lined driveway. And instead of Gumdrop Pass you might have pawpaws from picking distance of your back porch. What’s a pawpaw, you ask? “The pawpaw is like a pudding when you extract the seeds; it’s very yellow and custard like,” answers Michael McConkey, owner of Edible Landscaping in Afton, who says one of the best parts of his job is giving tours and showing people the joys of previously unknown fruits. “How many people have eaten pawpaw or persimmon?” Michael started his first garden in the late 1970s in his brother’s DC-area backyard (where he also lived in a yurt) and he hasn’t looked back since. “I gardened from sunrise to sunset for about 8 years and took classes at the University of Maryland,” he said. After a write-up in Organic Gardening, his side hobby exploded. “I had 25 plants in the ground and my brother’s mailbox was filled with $14,000 worth of orders for plants.” Not long after, Michael met his wife, Jeannie. “I ended up living in his garden,” said Jeannie, who endured yurt living with Michael for some time. “We actually got married there. I walked up the garden aisle

with my father cracking jokes all the way up. It was very much something I wanted to be involved with and I’ve gardened ever since. I think I will have a garden always, to some extent.” Jeannie, a teacher, says her favorite part of the family-owned nursery is (like Michael) its classroomlike feel. “People coming and seeing what they can grow without any sprays but still get a lot of food is so exciting for so many people and so important in this day and age,” she said. “It gives me a lot of joy to see children come up to Edible and eat blueberries fresh off the plant. There’s really no comparison between a fresh homegrown blueberry and the ones you get in the store.” In addition to tours and education, Edible Landscaping (of course) is all about selling attractive, but useful, plants to gardeners of all skill levels. Michael said that while he turned his hobby into a family-owned business, most of his clients do not share his career goals. “I don’t want my customers becoming professional orchardists,” he said. “The idea is to thread that needle of the complicated ecosystem. And you’re a part of it. That means a lot to me; I don’t like seeing more and more concrete and more and more shopping centers. I’d rather see a Whole Foods with an orchard behind it. I think it’s good for the health of the world and the health of the people.” continued on page 12

“If you walked through our landscaping, the trees look like any other trees, but they all serve a purpose in creating food.”

14

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2015

The McConkeys still buy some staples (wine doesn’t grow on trees, after all), but they put a great deal of weight on the importance of growing their own fruits and veggies. Michael heads up fruit growing at the nursery, and Jeannie is in charge of the extensive vegetable garden they have at home. “Why edible landscaping?” asks Michael. “It’s kind of ‘Why not?’ If you walked through our landscaping, the trees look like any other trees, but they all serve a purpose in creating food.” And after more than three decades of gardening for a living, it’s still just as interesting as it was back in 1979. “It’s still fun. I still like it,” said Michael. “Before gardening, I was a singer/songwriter and I still practice every morning and record and play, but as fate would have it, I am an owner of a nursery and that’s fine. I like being out in the greenhouse. We don’t use herbicides, so there’s a lot of weeding to do.” Some people say that food tastes better when you grow it yourself, and Michael and Jeannie tend to agree, and not just because the fruits of hard labor have an aftertaste of success. “The quality of our food is just going down, down, down unless you grow it yourself. Caring for the earth is a very important part of my life,” said Jeannie. “I’m so grateful to have that nursery and I really believe there are elemental beings in those fruit trees and we need to honor the earth more and more and there’s such a growing community realizing that they’re here for our children’s children’s children. That’s who it belongs to, really.” BRL

In the rural foothills of Pamplin, Virginia, stands what may well be the nation’s most avid monument to the history of beer drinking: Steins Unlimited. The museum—a one-story brick rancher plus backyard shed combo housing over 9,000 historically significant steins (dating from 1200 AD onward)—is nondescript, unnoticeable but for the tiny, hand-painted sign (‘Home of the World’s Largest Stein!’) planted alongside the mailbox. Never mind the bovine addled, basically 19th-century-pastoral backdrop, proprietor and stein hunter extraordinaire George Adams’ collection is one of the most preeminent in the United States, if not the world. For well over five decades he has scoured the planet, seeking out the oldest, rarest, most valuable brewski vessels known to man. continued on page 20

“So how did all this get started?” I ask, en-route to the tin-roofed and clapboard-sided building, following the startlingly limber (for a 75-year-old) Adams’s lead and ducking beneath the gangly limbs of an apple tree. “In the kitchen of my childhood home there hung this fabulous wooden cup thing with a lid,” says Adams. “Eventually, I pointed at it and asked, Hey, what’s that? To which my mother replied, with a shrug, Oh, that’s Great-Grandfather’s stein. From that instant, aged eight and onward, I was hooked.” Born into a family of first generation, German immigrants, for Adams, this story is of utmost significance. (Throughout my visit he will routinely praise Germany as home of the world’s most top-notch beer, motherland of stein-craft, progenitor of beer culture in general.) Accordingly, when Adams ushers me through the door and the lights blink to life, I am confronted by an array of tiered, floor-to-ceiling shelving units brimming with steins which—if I will please avert my attention to the wall-backing, length-wise section foremost to my right—will be seen to consist of genuine, ultra-premium German articles.

Operating on Main Street ... Not Wall Street

“This section is arranged chronologically,” pontificates Adams, his extended pointer-finger trolling from right to left, indicating the sequence. “It opens with the late 19th Century, in the era of Otto Von Bismarck, when Germany was a unified state, then proceeds onward through the war years.” With paternal delicacy he cradles a gleaming, pewter-lidded vessel from its perch and, holding the object at a distance (to better utilize his bifocals), like a man gazing into a beloved photo, he sighs, delicately fingers its design—a horse-drawn fire wagon manned by heavily mustached, sternly uniformed men, bustling from the garage of a brick, bell-towered firehouse onto a cobblestoned drive, v-lining for a group of faraway, hill-topping bungalows (rendered in perspective), one of which spews into the starry horizon a plume of billowy, orange-tinged smoke. “During this period—1871 to 1914—steins were a very social phenomenon,” continues Adams. “At the end of your workday you would go to your local stupa, upon which your friends, family, and acquaintances would all be converging, have the barman or maid retrieve your personal stein from the wall, and fill it with your favorite draft, which would typically have been brewed onsite.”

“It sounds rather quaint,” I venture, “warmly atavistic.” “Well, it was certainly a different experience,” says Adams, his voice heavy with the bitter sentimentalism of a man who believes he was born in the wrong era. “Nowadays, you go to your favorite watering hole and take your sips from a branded, homogenized glass featuring the logo of said establishment. But back then—”gives the piece a fond pat— “for your average 19th Century German, his drinking vessel was a matter of sincere importance. His stein was a cherished, personalized, and highly significant article. In the era in question, the steins tended to be first heraldic, familial—” pointer-finger extended he taps first a coat of arms hovering regally over the firehouse, second the horse-drawn fire-engine— “and then professional. A fellow’s stein would’ve featured something of the story of his life.” Following a perusal of some of Steins Unltd.’s stranger, and somewhat creepier artifacts—take, for instance, the ex-belonging of Nazi infantrymen commemorating the various fronts, campaigns, and battles they were fortunate enough to survive—I follow Adams up a deuce of makeshift stairs into the room that led to my just having to come here in the first place, the 24 x 32 foot ‘Domestic Beer Exhibit.’

“Here you’ll find just about every special, commemorative stein Anheuser Bush has ever put out,” remarks Adams, grinning as he lifts his hands wide, like, voila. “Also, you’ll see a lot of Miller stuff—” again he’s baton-fingering, indicating a table in the room’s back right corner, proceeding bouncingly leftward—“some Old Style, Stroh’s, Pabst, all the other major America breweries of the 20th century.” Similar to the Germanic/European area, the room is chocked full of what are basically ornate, pewter-lidded ceramic mugs. Its outer walls are similarly obscured behind floor-to-ceiling shelving units. There are hooks drilled into the ceiling from which dangle at minimum 100 vessels. In the room’s center, like a ziggurat, a stein covered table climbs toward the rafters in stacked, diminishing rectangular tiers. Tucked away in the corner of the room, there are two kegerators—one labeled Yuengling, the other Coors. Retrieving a couple of respectively branded steins from a nearby shelf, he offers me a ‘Bottomless Mug’ (I opt for Yuengling). Over the course of the next two hours, we sip sip away, exploring the strange, invariably cool history of stein-craft, with the scholarly Adams telling the tales and histories of his prestigious collection. Changing the outcome of an expired listing

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Ponder this. As I review listing statistics in Nelson County there are currently more than 100 properties that have been listed for more than a year. Eleven properties have actually been listed for more than 1,000 days! Many of these listings have expired and been relisted, and relisted, and relisted. If you are a distraught home seller facing an expired or soon-toexpire listing, evaluate your circumstances and get inspired to turn a depressing situation into a positive outcome. Check Motivation; if you are simply testing the waters, you may not have the proper motivation to attract a buyer. Don’t stigmatize your property by racking up unnecessary days on market. Excessive days on market may make your home “old news” and potential buyers may never even be alerted to the many price reductions. Some buyers may assume that there is a problem with

the home; otherwise someone would have bought it by now. If you are not motivated to sell “today”, don’t put it on the market until “tomorrow”. Consider the Presentation and Condition; did you get showings? The rule of thumb is that 10 to 15 showings should generate an offer, or at least a serious prospect. If your home is being shown, but is not yet sold, carefully evaluate feedback. Was the clutter blocking the window with a view? Can you re-arrange furniture to create a better flow? Is the carpet worn and in need of replacing? Has maintenance been neglected? Understanding buyer objections can help you solve the problem. Many solutions, such as cleaning and decluttering, don’t even cost a dime. Evaluate the Price; an overpriced home is not attractive! If the price is set too high, your home will be overlooked. How did you arrive at

Marlo Allen

the price when you first listed? Did you insist on a list price based on personal expectations? Or did the agent provide you with market data to predict the most likely sales price? Ask your agent for an update on the market conditions and get a new or revised comparative market analysis (CMA). Do your homework! Price should always be market driven. Review the Marketing; agents are not all alike and neither are their marketing plans. It often takes more than a MLS entry, a sign, and a lockbox to get results. Sit down with your agent and review the marketing plan. Does your home have a strong online presence? Would it be advantageous to rev up interest with a broker open house or online with featured or showcased property placement on Zillow, Trulia, or Realtor.com? Does your agent solicit buyer feedback? Most importantly, does the agent communicate with you? If the agent

is aggressively marketing the property, the agent deserves your loyalty. However, if the agent listed and disappeared, it’s probably time for a change. Interview agents and shop for services. Your best value will most likely be the agent who stands apart from the crowd in services, and not price. Marketing your property can be costly. Hence, the agent looking to take your listing at a reduced commission may offer a reduction in services. Be careful; there is wisdom in that age old saying “you get what you pay for”. Learn from your past experiences. Even the most successful of people faced failure. Babe Ruth once said that “every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

TOM’S MUSIC

MAN CAVE PINEY RIVER

Kathy Tolton, a former teacher at Nelson County High School, is married to Tom Sendall, a librarian, who happens to collect antique mechanical musical instruments, such as this rare Spanish street cart.

OCTOBER 2015

How does a person end up with nine player pianos (including a nickelodeon), a pump organ, two jukeboxes, ten antique music boxes and a Spanish street piano on a cart (sans piano-playing monkey, unfortunately)? It all starts with one. “When I was a college student in upstate New York, I discovered an unusual piano in a garage and surrounding it were about 250 piano rolls,” remembers Tom Sendall. That was 1962. “I went to the owner and asked about it and he said ‘Ah, that thing doesn’t work, I’ll take $35 for it all.’ When I was finally able to pay some attention to it, a simple fix was able to get it working again. I still have that player piano.” And eight others. His wife, Katherine (or Kathy) Tolton Sendall, now refers to the basement as “Tom’s Museum” because Tom has everything out on display. Kathy, a longtime Nelson resident who used to teach at Nelson County High School and Tom have only been married three years, but Tom says she’s uncommonly supportive of his unusual hobby.

he said. “But she’s very proud of it, too.” In Tom’s Museum, everything is plugged in and ready to go, whether it’s one of the 500 45s he has for the Rock-Ola Jukeboxes or one of the 500 player piano rolls he keeps in five antique cabinets to show people who stop by. “And they don’t get to leave without signing the guest book,” he says. Tom, a librarian, was never a professional musician or, really, a musician of any kind. “I never did learn to play musical instruments as much as I wish I had, so I depend more on these mechanical instruments to make music for me,” he said. “I call myself a hobbyist, which is probably the lowest category. In other words, I’m not a rebuilder, I’m not a repairer, I’m not a buyer or a seller. I just collect these items and enjoy them.”

continued from page 35

For music lovers without musical expertise, the mechanical instruments take Tom and Kathy’s love of music to the next level. He says in between the organ and the juke box there is always something to do — and not just in repairs. “One of the nine player pianos is upstairs in my living room and every other evening I play about 5 rolls and my wife and I sing along because the player piano rolls have the words,” said Tom. “So there’s always something to be done.” Tom — a fanatic in the truest sense of the word — collects anything having to do with mechanical musical instruments. Even if he doesn’t know what they are… yet. Years ago in Florida, Tom was visiting an antique store and the shop’s owner showed him some giant paper rolls. She didn’t know what they were for. He didn’t know what they were for. And he bought them anyway. It wasn’t until years later he was offered the nickelodeon and the rolls fit like a glove. Sadly, a lot of fans of the mechanical musical instrument movement are worried about the future of the hobby. There was a revival of player pianos (which were originally built up until about 1935) in the 70s, 80, and 90s, but player pianos seemed to inspire less excitement as MP3 players rose to popularity. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Tom says he’s not as worried. “I bring youngsters down and show them these things and they DO have an interest,” said Tom, proudly. “Because they’re such oddities.” BRL

In 1818, the Rockfish Gap Commission, led by Thomas Jefferson, met at a tavern on Afton Mountain to plan the location of the University of Virginia. According to Ron King, owner of King’s Gourmet Popcorn, Jefferson lamented at the Mountain Top Tavern: “I wish they had popcorn here.” In 2012, Ron took a risk as an entrepreneur. He was tired of selling kettle corn on the festival circuit. “It was too much of a gamble. You have two or three days in one place, and you could get rained out.” He wanted to sell kettle corn on that historic mountain pass. That way he could work in one spot continuously. Ron approached Martha Winston, his grandmother-in-law. “I said, ‘Grandmom, I got an idea. I need a few hundred bucks.’” Martha was glad to help. And on top of that, Ron landed a deal on some kettle corn equipment in Delaware, and he was able to pay in installments. That investment was his first blessing. Soon Ron set up shop atop the mountain in a vacant parking lot with a simple tent. His family helped him out – nieces, nephews, in-laws, and his wife, Veronica.

“Those were my humble beginnings,” he said under a proud grin. While enjoying the evening with her husband Jordan at one of Ron’s picnic tables, Martha Winston laughed, “It was cold up here when we got started. I thought the tent was gonna blow off the mountain. But it was fun.” It may have been a humble startup, but business at King’s Gourmet Popcorn boomed. Ron had gambled well on his location, his “gold mine” and his second blessing. The Rockfish Gap was once a strategic point during the French and Indian War. But today, Ron has built his fort in a bright yellow food trailer, and he has risen from that tent to become the King of the mountain. He meets thousands of customers each year as they pass over Interstate 64, Route 250, The Blue Ridge Parkway, the entrance to Skyline Drive, and the Appalachian Trail. And he sells a ton of popcorn. One weekend he introduced dark chocolate and sea salt popcorn, selling three whole batches in less than three hours! King’s Popcorn has become a landmark in Central Virginia. I often hear people refer to the “popcorn stand” when they give directions. And for hikers on the AT, King’s is a perfect spot to refuel. “One hiker said to me ‘You’re like a ray of sunshine in that big ole, bright yellow trailer,”’ Ron said, laughing. continued on page 43

People travel from near and far to stock up on Ron’s fare. I met Joshua Jenkins on his way home to Fairfax. He often travels south to visit family, and his coworkers send him with about a dozen popcorn orders each time. I talked a bit with Hugh Campbell of Waynesboro. But he wasn’t after the kettle corn: “King’s makes the best pork rinds I’ve ever had.” Ron’s menu has a lot of options from sweet caramel to Cajun white cheddar popcorn. His pork rinds also come in an array of flavors. You can even get a King Crunch Pop, described as a “Delicious popcorn, handcrafted on a stick, with special signature toppings.” Ron rounds out his menu with hotdogs, fries, drinks, and ice cream. And if you have the entrepreneurial spirit, you can buy something much bigger in that bright yellow food trailer, like your own food trailer. Ron designed his, and he has become a licensed dealer. If you are interested in making a mobile kitchen, talk to Ron. “I can get you the best deal on a new one.” Ron King is a small business success story. He is a man of faith, and he counts his blessings. The third of these is that he gets to work so close to his home in Waynesboro. And he supports local businesses as much as he can: “My corn is Virginia grown corn. My recipes are my own.” So if you’re ever passing through the Rockfish Gap, whether hiking or road tripping, stop in and say ‘Hi’ to Ron, and try his recipes. You can’t miss it, because when the corn is poppin’ the cars are stoppin.’ BRL

OUT OF THE

FIRE

Kevin Crowe’s “irrational passion” subject of new documentary

TYE RIVER

[ nelson county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by WOODY GREENBERG

Nelson County potter Kevin Crowe had just removed the first bricks sealing the wood-fired kiln, into which he had placed nearly 2,000 handmade clay pots, when the sound of breaking glass could be heard inside the kiln. This after eight days of maintaining the fire 24 hours a day, followed by seven days of cool down. Would months of work - cutting and splitting wood, making the pots that are his livelihood – turn out to be a disaster, captured on video by documentary film-makers for all the world to see? The video of the firing has been turned into Out of the Fire, described on its promotional web site, www.outofthefirefilms.com, as “a heartwarming film about art making, chance taking, and the magic of following your dreams.” The documentary follows Crowe, along with his apprentice Krista Loomans and a crew of helpers, as they complete a four-day, high-temperature kiln firing. “It’s an irrational passion,” says Crowe. “When apprentices come I say, ‘How crazy are you?’” Out of the Fire is the handiwork of Courtenay Singer, a Los Angeles-based producer, director, and writer of non-fiction films and television programs. Her work has appeared on PBS, National Geographic, Animal Planet, HGTV, TLC, SyFy, and other networks. She has also contributed to several independent films. Out of the Fire is her first feature film.

The documentary has screened at 14 film festivals nationwide, and received the 2014 Bronze Remi Award for Independent Documentary Feature from WorldFest Houston. “We almost won best documentary feature at Rehoboth but we lost to Muscle Shoals”, Singer says.

And what inspired her? “Aside from making film and TV, one of my other main interests is pottery,” she says. “I’ve been making pots for almost 25 years.” In 2006, she and a close friend participated in a pottery workshop led by Crowe at his studio in Tye River. An additional participant, Crawford Horne from Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, later

became the first financial backer of the film. “When I first showed up at Kevin’s place, met him, and saw his incredible kiln and his fantastic work, I was blown away. I had never seen a kiln like that – walk in, three chambers, three different surfaces for the pots in a single firing that goes on for days, requiring a sizable crew of people taking turns with constant stoking ... And then I saw Kevin’s beautiful, powerful pieces, and heard his thoughts on making a life as an artist. All of it just knocked me out. And I felt really drawn towards telling Kevin’s story, along with the story of a kiln firing, and the other people involved with it. “ Crowe says Singer shot 150 hours of video at his studio over two-and-a-half months. “I thought it would be small scale, documenting this part of our lives for my sons. She left and I didn’t hear from her for five-and-a-half years, and then I was in North Carolina teaching a workshop and received an email saying she was still working on it. She worked another six months and it came out last year.” The drama in the documentary is how successful – or unsuccessful – the firing will be. Those sounds of breaking glass as the kiln is opened after it had cooled down? Crowe says that has only happened to him once in his 30-odd years of making pots, and it happened for the video. continued on page 46

“When that happened it was exactly what (Courtenay) was hoping for. I think that that’s important. Things do happen in firings,” says Crowe. At stake was not only his own work but a number of pieces his then-apprentice Krista Loomans had made and other pieces by members of the firing crew. No spoiler here. You will have to see Out of the Fire to see what happened. A showing is scheduled at the Nelson Center on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., sponsored by the Nelson County Historical Society. There is no charge for the event. Crowe will speak on the history of pottery following the showing. The firing process is both a solo and team effort. Crowe fires up the kiln twice a year, once in the fall, once in the spring. “It takes me at least three weeks to get eight cords of wood up, split just right, get it organized in the kiln sheds. Then it takes me another five days to wad all the pots – putting balls of clay between every contact surface in the kiln – brick to shelf, brick to kiln, lid to pot, because the high velocity fuel going through the kiln fuses to every surface so without that you’d have this massive fused sculpture in the kiln. And the placement of those wads is part of the aesthetic experience of the pots, especially on plates and bowls, rim to rim. They have to be placed carefully.” Of the fall 2014 firing crew, most of them potters in their own right, Crowe says, “They’re really smart, they’re engaged. I think the youngest is 19, the oldest is 73 with most of them in the mid to late 20s

ADVERTORIAL

Estate Planning BEFORE you Travel By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC and mid to late 30s. They’re really aware of what each shift requires, they’re cognizant of where the pots are, and they know the road map. So I tell them all when they get here what the firing plan is. Firing is not a democracy. It’s not a committee. You have to have one person in charge with a plan and then everybody commits to that plan. The crew this year did great. Probably the best firing we’ve ever had.” As for the results of a firing, “It looks to most people when they see surfaces that it’s always a surprise, out of your control, but it really requires you to be as specific, as careful, as engaged and controlled in making the pots and stacking the pots, and setting the kiln, making sure the wood is exactly right and dry, all of these things have to be under careful control and orchestrated ... for people doing it the first time it’s really nerve wracking. It’s not turning a valve and watching a pressure gauge.” And his reaction to Out of the Fire? “It’s difficult to watch ... watching yourself on film, watching yourself talk and talk. It’s uncomfortable, having my life, family, history up on the screen,” Crowe says. His sons, Kai and Bram, had a similar reaction. “They thought they looked goofy. I think they felt awkward about having their lives up on screen as well.” But if it serves as inspiration for other people to follow their passion? “Then it’s worth it,” Crowe says. BRL

Are you thinking of traveling for the holidays? In your travel plans, don’t forget your estate planning! If you plan on traveling outside of Virginia, keep in mind many other states have laws which differ from those in Virginia. The laws regarding Powers of Attorney can especially wreak havoc on an ill-prepared family. So long as you are within Virginia’s borders, Virginia law allows a healthy spouse to make healthcare decisions for an incapacitated spouse, even in the absence of an advanced medical directive. This means that a married couple may usually make decisions for one another during one of the spouse’s incapacity without having done any sort of prior legal planning. A problem arises, however, when that same married couple leaves Virginia to visit another state. That other state may require a healthy spouse to possess and present a valid healthcare directive, signed by the incapacitated spouse, prior to making any decisions for the incapacitated spouse. It is very much in the realm of possibility that a couple in that scenario may find themselves in a foreign state’s courtroom trying to sort out the details … all during a time of crisis. The same may be true for the Durable Financial Power of Attorney. It may serve you well to have your documents updated to reflect your most recent desires for agent, authorizations, or changes in the law. When you travel, take photocopies of the powers of attorney along with you. Nearly all states recognize the validity of a photocopied power of attorney. While some states may have different rules on how the document should have been executed or some of the terms within the documents, you will be in a much better position if you have a set of the documents with you if a crisis were to arise. Before you leave, revisit your Beneficiary Designations, Last Will, and Trust. When is the last time you took a serious look at your Will or Trust? Have you checked the beneficiary designation on your 401(k) or IRA recently? I once had a 94 year old client that still had his mother named as the sole beneficiary of his life insurance policy. Take a few minutes to meet with an estate planning attorney to ensure your Last Will or Trust actually states what you think you remember it stating. I have counseled many people over the years, and have discovered few of them can accurately tell me what their Will or Trust actually directs. We will often plan for weeks before taking a trip; making sure we have that “sweater in the suitcase”. But, we often fail to properly plan for the legal dilemmas we may face. Make sure your planning is secure BEFORE you travel!

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

Jousting with Mountain Bikes How was your summer? Full of adventure, we hope. Summer has come to an end and more adventures have passed. We had a busy one with many new adventures and more folks to call friends. Around these parts, you never know where the next adventure may be waiting. One such new adventure has been a new partnership with James River State Park. If you have not been to this park, you should. It is located where the well-traveled Tye River meets the James not far off Route 60. Simply a beautiful place with great terrain for staging some fun races. We’ve collaborated with said magazine, Blue Ridge Life, Devils Backbone Brewing Co, Trager Bros Coffee, Appomattox River Co. and a few others to bring you three races: Adventure Triathlon, Adventure Race, and a Night Trail Run 5k October 17 to be held during their

Fall Festival. Join us. We’ve been working with Bill Crawford, the chief ranger at James River State Park, through these adventures where Mother Nature likes to throw curve balls from time to time. You always have to remember that not all adventures last forever but you have to make the most of everyone. After 16 years, my best Jack Russell buddy, Jake, passed away back in July. We had a great run filled with memories and pictures that will never fade. He was a great buddy and will be dearly missed. My series, The Virginia Off Road Series, had some great races cross through the area including Wintergreen Resort, Miller School of Albemarle and Walnut Creek. Nelson County and the surrounding area offers some of the best mountain biking in Virginia. Whetstone Ridge, Walnut Creek and Sherando offer up some of the best singletrack

for story telling back at one of the local breweries. One recent find was along Paul’s Creek near Nellysford, where I found myself Jousting with a tree on the losing end but it was another great adventure to tell over a brew at Margarita’s. Another adventure this past summer was working with Nelson County Tourism to film Cycle Nelson. I worked with the ladies of Nelson County Tourism and Black Match Productions to film cycling and other offerings of Nelson County to show to the crowds of the 2015 UCI World Championship in Richmond back in September. I had a great time filming at sunrise up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounding areas. I had the chance to sit down and chat with Denver, owner of Silverback Distillery, and Brian, co-owner of Bold Rock. These two gentlemen represent great things happening in Nelson County

these days. Filming is such a great process and so open source it can be overwhelming. Time constraints, scripting the right words, repetitive shots and so many bloopers are just a few of the many items running through your head to try and get the right message across. By the time you’re reading this, summer will be done and Fall will be in full swing. I can already smell the campfires and coffee brewing early in the morning. Two local places come to mind for supplies: Trager Bros Coffee and Rockfish Gap Outfitters! Soon, it’ll be time to pack up the tent and sleeping bags and head over to Crabtree Falls, Montebello, Sherando or the Festy. All great opportunities for that next adventure! So whether sippin’ coffee from the tent watching the sunrise over the mountains or jousting with mountain bikes, make sure to make and take the most with every adventure!

Screens That Don’t Scream Most of us have had them once or twice in our lives – the neighbor that you really just want to erase from the edge of your property. Abandoned cars, tacky house colors, obnoxious yard ornaments or just plain junk littering the property can be some of those reasons. The straight hedge of Leyland cypress is so overused and frankly outdated that we don’t even consider that as an option anymore. Our company goes about it in a little different manner by incorporating varying textures, heights and random placement to produce a hedge that offers eye candy to your guests while accomplishing the underlying theme of removing the eyesore from your wonderful landscape. While the random design and varying material is key, proper placement regarding ultimate growth is paramount. Associated with any hedge is a large evergreen placed in a semi random pattern. Among our favorites are Norway Spruce, White Pine, Green Giant Arborvitae, Cedars and Hemlock. All of these are relatively easy to care for and don’t come with too much maintenance after the install. We use these as the backbone to the hedge – typically located at or near the back and are placed in random groupings of one and three (being sure to locate the three in an upside down ‘V’ shaped pattern, with the opening of the ‘V’ towards your property). The lone evergreen typically begins and ends the hedge while the groupings of three are in the meat of the hedge where coverage is most necessary. Mixed in with the skeleton are deciduous trees that produce a canopy and branching structure that, even in winter, are difficult to see through. Most times our top candidates are lower tier trees (in relation to the taller evergreens) like Kousa & Flowering Dogwood, Crape Myrtle, Japanese Snowbell and fastigiated

Japanese Maples (‘Bloodgood’ and ‘Palmatifolium’ are two good ones). These lower tier trees are best used in singles mixed amidst the evergreens and in threes forming their own ‘V’. The result is contrast against the evergreens and more color for specific times of the year as they bloom and develop fall color. At the very front of your hedge is where you can really have some fun. Introducing an even lower tier of evergreen and deciduous shrubs continues to diversify your hedge and, again, adds contrast and interest to the overall effect. Some of our favorites are Winterberry, Deciduous ‘Exbury’ Azaleas, Paniculata Hydrangeas, Otto Luyken Laurel, Fragrant Daphne, Blue Hollies and even Boxwood. All of these are relatively easy to care for and add increased coverage of the lower areas where your sight line is most direct with your neighbor or the eyesore you are looking to remove. It is really difficult to not move in with a handful of color in any area like this. Perennials offer extended color, varying texture and just continue the theme of a decorated hedge that really no longer appears as one. Our favorites for these areas are Ferns (go with the green varieties like Christmas, Ostrich, etc.), Variegated Solomon’s Seal, Lenten Rose, Baptisia, Black Eyed Susans, Peonies, Coneflower, Columbine and many, many more. To cap things off is the eye candy or some sort of manmade or hard line item that draws your eye to a specific area. My favorites are benches, birdhouses, birdbaths, boulders, or other ‘tasteful’ yard ornaments that give a strong distinct line. When it is all done, the eyesore has disappeared behind a uniquely designed hedge that doesn’t remotely resemble one and the neighbor has no idea that it was all to remove their property from the edge of your own.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Doc, I’ve got a good friend that just got diagnosed with diabetes. How would I know if I have it? Diabetes is common, and it seems to be getting even more common. Our bodies run on the food and drink that we put into them. Much of the food we eat gets turned into sugar, which our muscles and organs can use for fuel to do what they need to do. Clearly, this is an important process. In diabetes, the system goes haywire. The muscles and organs that depend on the sugar don’t absorb it well, and the body doesn’t know how to store sugar for later. Therefore, too much sugar runs around in the blood stream. Uncontrolled amounts of sugar in the blood can lead to all kinds of problems. It destroys blood vessels (and can therefore lead to amputations, heart attacks, strokes, etc.), hurts the eyes, causes nerve damage, and a host of other bad stuff. Some people get diabetes at a young age and require insulin shots to control their blood sugar levels (as a result of a malfunctioning pan-

creas). What I am focusing on here is the type of diabetes that comes on at an older age. If you have a family history of this kind of diabetes or are overweight it makes it much more likely to get diabetes. Often the first symptoms of the disease are extreme thirst and excessive urination. The body is trying to get rid of sugar, and in doing so gets rid of tons of water at the same time. Blurry vision, tiredness, weakness, and frequent yeast infections can also be signs that the blood sugar level is too high. The good news is that it is often possible to control mild or early diabetes with proper eating, weight control, and exercise. Medications can also help quite a bit at keeping the effects of diabetes at bay. If you or someone you know is having symptoms like those described above, see your doctor to check your sugar.
