from
thepublishers It was one of those really hot afternoons and the plan was to quickly shoot up Afton Mountain to run some errands in the valley. Shame on us for choosing the interstate. Without any roadside warnings, traffic ground to a halt and the “Are we there yets?” turned into “Mommy, why aren’t we moving?” Windows down, parking break on, we sat for nearly an hour. “I’m hungry,” moaned Adam. This is why I carry a month’s worth of snacks in the back of the truck. Right around the time the guy in front of me with North Carolina plates had rearranged the junk in his trunk for the umpteenth time, traffic began moving again. “Wow!” both kids squealed, as we inched passed a burned out car. As we picked up speed and cars started zooming by, I apologized to the kids for the long wait, and our trip settled back into the hush of a highway hum. “Mommy, we are so lucky.” “Why are we lucky, sweetheart?” I asked, trying to catch Peyton’s glance in my rear view window. “We saw a burned out car! How lucky is that?!”
Trapped in traffic for nearly an hour, the kids should have been hot, cranky messes. Sure, the driver of that car had seen better days but the kids had gotten to see the charred, smoldering guts of an automobile! Several days later, we awoke to the misfortune of discovering our meat chickens had been slaughtered by a skunk, who we promptly punished. With the same fascination of a child staring at the charred remains of a car, Adam stepped outside to survey the carnage. His assessment: “The chickens are going to heaven. And if we had heaven binoculars, we could see them.” Heaven binoculars. Next time I’ll stuff them in the back of the truck, along with the snacks. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Innocents Abroad Perhaps globalization has destroyed Twain’s once apt descriptor, and a more apropos title might be “Innocence Lost,” but I can vouch for a certain amount of genuine innocence still going strong. In September, I had the joy of watching Nelson County locals meet Provence. This year’s trip was especially poignant. Because of you, our generous customers, we were able to take along some of our staff — familiar faces who’ve served you, day in and out, for nearly twenty years. Because of you, staff stood not in our small, hot kitchen cooking, but rather sat on the sun-dappled terrace beneath the Linden trees of La Cabro d’Or, eating local Cavaillon melon soup in Beaumes de Venise wine. Because of you, they were not juggling to satisfy tables but instead, for this brief moment in time, gazing out from the terrace of Château Eza to the Cap Ferrat and a sparkling Mediterranean sea, as black and white clad waiters served Bellinis in Lalique glasses. For a long time, I had wanted to take our staff with me to Provence. Back
in October of 2015, the idea visited more insistently, and urged on by some tipsy wine tasters, the dream began to take shape. Yet I’m not sure if any of us really believed it would ever happen … until it did. Provence is the land of crisp rosés and full-bodied reds, of resonant sounds like the clink of glasses over laughter and the hum of the cicadas, of ochres and olive greens, yellows and blues, of fragrant scents of lavender, rosemary and thyme, and bread baking in the predawn hours. There is a solemn tranquility, about which Durrell said, “Landscapes of an almost brutal serenity.” There is a reassuring certainty to the rituals and traditions of life in the small villages — the markets, the meals, peaceful patterns and rhythms. And there is the light — light of heartbreaking clarity. In late summer, golden light blankets everything, as if in quiet benediction. Here is the land of van Gogh and Cezanne, and of Petrarch and the Troubadours. Here is where shepherds still herd their sheep, and seek out quiet hillsides to eat simple fair: bread, cheese, a dash
of olive oil. Here is a land of enchantment. And, because of you, staff members were able to experience this enchantment. In Nice, at the trip’s finale, the sun smiled down as always, and a few of us floated in the Mediterranean, buoyed by the salty sea, but also by a great and generous sense of “Bonheur.” Thank you all, our loyal customers, who helped make this dream a beautiful reality. Château de Ségriès, Lirac, 2014 – Of course no trip to Provence is even close to complete without a visit to Anne and Frederic of Château de Ségriès. Now, the question becomes, how can we entice our beloved friends to visit us, and return to them such gracious hospitality? Their Lirac has long been a favorite with customers. On the nose, look to find raspberry and cherry aromas, mixed with spicy cinnamon and clove, and a hint of garrigue (the rosemary, thyme, lavender and sage that make up much of the terroir in parts of Provence.) On the palate, there is more cherry, together with licorice and cocoa. $18.99

With every boom, there’s a bust. Baby boomers included. “We’ve lost 14 friends since February,” says Timmy Smith from a chair near the kitchen of his cottage in Swoope. Timmy’s a carpenter and his friends know he can build a nice box. It wasn’t too long ago that he got a call from a pal who had recently moved from Batesville to the Outer Banks. “Her husband called me and said his wife had just died on a Thursday and if they could have a coffin by Saturday.” So Timmy went to his workshop and grabbed some boards. These were white pine. Coffins have six sides. Caskets have four and the box is rectangular. His friend’s wife was getting a coffin. “I went up and delivered and helped the husband dig his wife’s grave and that Saturday, we had a beautiful organic hippie funeral.”
a stack of plates. “It gives everyone a place to be in the process, whereas if you walk into a church and sit in a pew in your black dress and mumble through hymns that you’ve never heard before ... That to me is an awkward moment, instead of it being ‘His favorite song was ‘Papa was a Rolling Stone’ and lets sing it, as best we can.” Her tomato sandwiches are killer. We talk about the tomato crop this year, which wasn’t so killer. Pancreatic cancer. That’s also been a killer. I didn’t know my father terribly well but he died just weeks ago from complications of the disease. He either downplayed or kept the severity of his illness private. As a professional cyclist, he came to this country on a bike and he left the world on one, pedaling his brains out, right up until a few days before his body finally gave out. 2016 has been quite a year. continued on page 14
And that’s pretty much how it would have been in the country decades ago. Maybe not so much the hippie part, but crafting a pine box and digging the grave yourself and with friends was common. “You were buried on your farm in a pine box, shallow and returned to dust and replenished the earth basically,” mentions Timmy’s partner in crime, Victoria Beecher Godfrey, as she slides over a plate of tomato sandwiches. “I think socially we’ve lost sight of the catharsis of preparing a body for a burial, of building that box and digging that hole, providing sustenance for the mourners and the workers,” she says, setting down

“A coffin wasn’t even the kind of thing we were even thinking about so the fact that we had this beautiful handmade piece from somebody that we love, and the love that went into that, it was hugely, hugely important to us. It was a very big deal.” Little Leo was laid to rest in the yard of Kate’s husband’s family’s home in Charlottesville. The family’s been able to hang on to that property for a century so it seemed like the perfect place for Leo. The act of burying him there made sense. “For people like my husband and I ... We’re working class people. We don’t have savings. We put our money into his birth.” A proper burial. Everyone seems to have a different definition of that. My father died in a hospital in Columbia. Friends and family viewed him that evening and put him in a casket the next day. It wasn’t a simple country burial but it wasn’t nearly as elaborate as some funerals can be. “$14,000 for a casket!” Timmy said, talking about the money a friend had to spend for his mother. “And that didn’t include the vault.” Timmy’s caskets start at around $700. He shows me the one he built for himself. It’s currently being used as a china cabinet in the dining room. The shelves are removable. Victoria’s is sitting alongside a wall, emptied out. Hers is a coffin, a six-sided container like you’d see in an old Western. I tried it out and it fits just right, pretty comfy for a death box. Victoria is living with severe pulmonary hypertension, which may put her on the fast track to having to use that thing. “That’s why I wanted Timmy to build my coffin. Having observed what happens in these situations: You’re going to have to vacuum. You won’t have time for this. So build it now and let me live with it,” Victoria says, turning to Timmy. (I think they’ve had this chat before). “If you go first, I’m going to have to call all your carpenter friends.” continued on page 16
The back door swings open and in walks Stauntonbased photographer Kate Simon, with her friend Wendy. Kate shot the pictures for this story and we’re finally meeting face to face. “I’ve gotten pretty used to the concept of death recently,” she says, picking up a tomato sandwich from the plate in front of her. “It’s real. It’s inevitable. So lets get comfortable with it.” Getting comfortable with death doesn’t mean you don’t cry or miss the loved one you lost. Maybe it means you accept death as a natural process. “Tim surprised us with a little coffin for our son who passed away in May. It’s the kind of thing that you don’t think about. When you don’t expect it, it’s the last thing on your mind when you are going through it. For us, I had only carried Leo for only 5 months .” She’s wearing a black dress. I don’t know if she meant to do that. But either way, I’m sitting across the table from a mother who lost her son just a few months ago, whose due date would have been around the time this story is published. I’m guessing she would have been bouncing him on his knee by now, or wearing him. “In the time between we had found out he had passed and the time he was born, we did a lot of thinking. We got to a place where we really noticed the wonderful things that came out of our son’s death. We had no idea we were loved so much.” Kate and her husband had funneled all of their money into preparing for Leo’s birth. Their minds, their wallets and their hearts weren’t ready for a costly funeral.

The fact that you can buy your coffin and enjoy it before you kick is mighty appealing. Coffin tables. Bookcases. A blanket chest. A bar! “All the hardware necessary – handles and things like that – can be attached later,” Victoria points out. I glance at the time and begin to say my good-byes. As I turn off the last country road before an interstate ramp, I see an antique hearse ahead of me. I didn’t get to see who was behind the wheel but I’m pretty sure it’s the handsome young cyclist from Uruguay who used to drive a cab in Miami years ago. BRL

STAUNTON
[ augusta county ]
STORY by ERIC J. WALLACE PHOTOGRAPHY by ANNIE LAURA / 621studios.com
SPOOKY STAUNTON GHOST HUNTING THE QUEEN CITY
After spending 15 years hunting ghosts all across the country and back — a tour which included, among other such ectoplasmic high-points, the site of the 1912 Villisca Axe Murders — bent on delivering unto his hometown one heavy dose of the occult, Staunton’s most notorious paranormal investigator, Marty Seibel, founded Black Raven Paranormal’s Ghost Tour series. Employing a number of traditional Ph.D.-holding research-historians, one highly recommended regional psychic, and, of course, tapping his own extensive professional knowledge, Siebel and company spent the better part of a year sleuthing their way around Staunton, plumbing the vaults of its citizen’s collective memory, rooting out and compiling a darker, seedier version of the queen city’s history. “First, we got out and talked to people,” says Seibel. “Staunton’s been on the map for over 260 years, and has a ton of old buildings … So we tried to find the hotspots, where things were happening. And we’d go from there.” What Seibel means here is, he and his team scoured the city looking for rumors, for the first, most-recent morsels of a ghost story. “We’d find something out —” napkins inexplicably unfolding in the Clock Tower Restaurant, for instance — “and then look into it,” explains Seibel. The thing about a ghost story is, even more-so than your average yarn of interest, for a specimen to be really superlative demands an explosive beginning. Which makes sense. Especially when considering the fact the most popular theory for explaining pesky poltergeists tends to go something like: post experiencing some form of trauma the spiritual essence of John or Jane Doe decided to linger about indefinitely, clinging to his or her (its?) familiar and comfortable surroundings until some breed of resolution for said trauma is affected.

Hence the researchers. “Before doing any kind of site work,” Seibel informs us, “we look into the history of a given building and try to find out if anything odd happened there.” For instance, after chatting with various Staunton Tea & Coffee baristas, logging time and again references to a certain eerie shifting of the radio station with accompanying diminishment of volume, Seibel’s researchers struck out for the library’s archives, and began digging around. After a bit of gumshoeing, they discovered that, due to its proximity to the city’s once-bustling and prominent railroad depot, the ST&C had been, in a much earlier incarnation, a tavern. One mid-19th Century evening (around the eve of the Civil War, in fact), an obviously well-soused soldier stumbled into the establishment and demanded of its much-beloved local owner some [insert expletive here] oysters. Having just served his last platter, the owner and barman was forced — much to our by-now fuming patron’s chagrin — to offer a substitute. Having perhaps suffered some

form of manly embarrassment, perhaps desperately seeking the shellfish’s much-avowed aphrodisia, the soldier was having none of it. To the barman’s offer he countered: ‘Oysters, or a shot to the face!’ Being unable to magically procure the mollusk in question, the owner was promptly executed. Only he didn’t die. Before bleeding induced by the bullet lodged deep in his brain put an end to him, the owner lingered for a few days and in the meantime was kept — get this! — in the building. And then, to further muddy the proverbial water, the killer wound up getting released on a technicality. “So is it the ghost of the saloon owner that keeps moving around silverware and turning down the radio?” one of Black Raven Paranormal’s guides asks a group of 10 – 12 riveted onlookers. “While we can’t say for sure, I ask you, is it not a strange coincidence that this atrocity occurred right there in the very room where the activity is happening?” Hoisting her black, candle-lit lantern toward the closed coffee shop, the guide surveys the group, her definitively rhetorical musing hanging in the chilly late-September air furtive as a cloud of unexplained mist. Furthermore, found the researchers—and informs the guide—in the apartments above the shop, there are often heard loud noises, like sofas, easy-chairs, dressers, what have you, are being shoved to and fro across the hardwood floors. Only, upon investigation, the furnishings are encapsulated in canvas; the room devoid of human presence. Whence then, the sounds? “In 1951,” elaborates the guide, her inflection more-so telegraphing than foreshadowing another onslaught of disturbing historical gossip, “after many days spent phoning and receiving no answer from his dearest friend, [Timmy Jones Johnson] hoofed it over and decided to pay his chum a visit. Only, when Timmy proceeded down the hall, he was struck with a sick feeling — his friend was a busy-body nearly always moving things around, but the apartment was quiet. Dead silent. When Timmy knocked on the door, the door creaked open. And as the door swung slowly into the room, and the stench struck him full on in the face, what do you think he saw?” Indeed. What did poor Timmy see? Beyond the skin-crawling undertones—not to mention the grand excuse for a lamp-and-moon-lit stroll around one of the prettiest mountain cities in the country — the really fascinating, entertaining, and ultimately enjoyable thing about Mr. Seibel’s Staunton Ghost Tours is how hard his guides work to construct a gossip-rife, lurking-just-below-the-surfaces alternative history of an otherwise upstanding town. Post one of these, strolling about in daylight hours makes for an imminently chucklesome contrast. BRL

Stay and Play Tips for buying a vacation or second home
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Earlier this year, Wintergreen was featured on the television show, The Coolest Places on Earth, which highlighted the best skiing and mountain retreats on earth. As a vacation destination, Wintergreen and Nelson County have become a respite for those seeking the natural beauty and recreation of the mountains and all that the area has to offer. Many come to play, and some decide to stay. Should you be in the market for a vacation or second home, here are a few tips for consideration before making a purchase. Understand location: Get to know the area. Take a few day or weekend trips to explore the local offerings. Purchase near activities that you enjoy such as hiking, biking, skiing, canoeing, golfing, etc. Consider driving distance. A retreat that is within a few hours’ commute may get used more than one taking a full day of travel. Hire a local real
estate professional as your buyer’s agent. A true local will know the real estate market for the area, and besides showing you property and providing guidance on price and possible offer, the agent can point out things that may be good to know. Agent knowledge and guidance is paramount when you may not have the same depth of understanding about the area. Determine type of home desired: Decide what type of home is the right fit for your specific needs and intended use. Do you need a small condo getaway, or large detached home that can accommodate extended family and friends? Do you want a place with lots of acreage for tremendous privacy, or would you prefer a small yard or place in the woods with no yard maintenance? Do you want something newer or recently renovated, or would you prefer something needing some TLC to perhaps get a better deal on price?
Marlo Allen
Know what you can afford: Even if you are paying cash, speaking to your financial advisor or tax accountant can give you an understanding of how much funds you can extract and the impact to your overall finances. If you need financing, speak to a loan officer, or ask the agent for a local lender, who can take a look at your overall plans and help structure the purchase in a way that makes the most sense. If you do a 1031 exchange or are considering an option to rent the property, understanding the tax advantages and/or implications is a key aspect of establishing a purchasing plan. Consider extended cost of ownership: Plan ahead to make sure you have money in the budget to cover fees associated with ownership such as real estate taxes, property owner or condo association fees, and the cost of maintenance or unexpected repairs. Give serious consideration to renting the property, especially

if you may not use it regularly or during peak tourist periods. Explore Airbnb, Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO), or local property management companies. A property manager may be the best fit if you don’t want the hassle of ongoing management. While renting the property may not cover all the expenses, it can help offset the cost of ownership. Wintergreen and Nelson County offer something for everyone. Whether dreaming of a cabin on the river, a chalet on the slopes, a cottage in the woods, or a condo with a view, there is a place here for you that can fit any budget. Enlist the help of a local, qualified professional to help you find just the right one, so you can truly stay and play! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. Spiritual Officer) and CFO. Bart (who has lived in Waynesboro for more than a decade), Chris and Jacque are heading up the local team. Now assigned a Waynesboro zip code, the old Metalcrafters building actually sits in a tiny section of town known as Basic City, which experienced a steel boom in the 1800s. Of course, they’ve learned quite a bit about brewing from Jacque, but the team has also learned a lot about plumbing (they hung all of the glycol, which cools the beer tanks — 17 feet in the air) and even interior decorating. “Bart and I made the tables out of 200-year-old reclaimed heart of pine wood from the Virginia Textile Mill,” explains Chris, who only recently moved back to the east coast after years of nagging from the family.
Bart Lanham holds a stout at Basic City Beer Co. At press time, the brewery had yet to announce a grand opening date but is expected to open its doors this fall.
Chris, Bart and Joe Lanham’s dad was drinking Sierra Nevada before it was cool to drink craft beer. So the brothers, who grew up in Northern Virginia and now own and operate the area’s newest brewery, are no stranger to good beer made in small batches. And when their dad passed away, they decided their was no time like the present. Along with Jacque Landry, former South Street brewer, the trio plans to open Basic City Brewing in Waynesboro later this month. And – just like the men and women who worked in the old Virginia Metalcrafters building where the brewery now stands – the Lanhams are no stranger to hard work. “When we started this project, we definitely weren’t wealthy people who could throw a ton of money at it,” said Chris. “We tried to do everything we could ourselves and we’ve definitely done some things we didn’t know we could do.” Joe, a pastor in Charlotte, is acting from afar as the CSO (Chief

“The whole building is a reclamation ... For the table bases, we reclaimed the old sprinkler pipe from the metal crafters. We love rust. Bart, a chef and an artist (and bourbon drinker, but we won’t talk about that), even figured out a way to sculpt chandeliers out of conduit from the old building. But the coolest reclamation might be the six foot tap made of sprinkler pipe. “We tried to reuse everything,” he said. “That’s what starting a brewery is: DIY. That’s do-it-yourself. And just hope you don’t DIW: do it wrong.” Jacque’s beers are already getting top marks. Chris said Jacque is super scientific about his brewing process, which allows Basic City to create beers that are different from many other Virginia beers. They’re especially particular to New England beers like cloudy, hoppy Northeast IPAs. Eventually, he said their goal is to make something unique to Virginia that spreads to other breweries and eventually other places try to replicate. “We’re just going to try to brew Virginia beers and make people want to come to Virginia just for beer,” said Chris. “There are so many great breweries in Virginia. We call it brewery-oriented development.” BRL

William and Lilia Fenton, husband and wife of twelve years, met in 2001 touring castles in Germany. Today, in Nelson County, Will has built his bride a castle of her own. The Fenton Inn Bed and Breakfast opened in August, 2016, introducing Bavaria to the Blue Ridge. “I had a European wife, so I needed to build her a suitable habitat.” With plenty of experience under his tool belt, Will was ready for the challenge. “I worked at Monticello and then I went to Poplar Forest, which was doing a complete rebuild of a Thomas Jefferson summer home,” says Will. “I worked at Williamsburg and other places too, so I have faked history.” And once you’ve stepped onto the Fenton property, you will feel like you’re walking down the cobblestone streets of your history books. Will admits, “I wanted this place to feel like it’s been here for two hundred years on the outside, but on the inside have it energy efficient and high-tech.” A three-storied modern day castle overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fully equipped with a town square, gym, drawbridge, moat, and a movie theater. “Pretty much all the wood, everything that’s not pine, is off the property. All the trim, doors, beams, the furniture. Some of the smaller trees that would have been rejected as firewood, those made the more interesting boards,” says Will. “We really made use of every piece of wood. We had a number of hickory trees here and it’s very hard to cut and do much with, but it had really great edges on it so it made great mantles, and countertop pieces, and you just let them be the way they are.”

Will may have let sleeping logs lie when he built the castle, but Lilia decorated it. Including the Captain’s Quarters, Swallow’s Nest, the Poplar Room, the Hummingbird Room, the Butterfly Room. Plus the Wilhelm’s House, which accommodates two private bedrooms and bathrooms on three different levels. “I think we’re a good team. We created all this village,” says Lilia. “We also have a ballroom that can accommodate up to 40 people for events or meetings, and we have the town square for maybe small outdoor weddings.” When he’s done with his chores, Will is allowed to go work, or play, with his next project: A two-floor building that will allow pets is already in progress adjacent to the town square. “We like exploring different options of what to do for the future,” says Will. High tea is an idea that’s been brewing and may be introduced later into the year, just in time for ski season. Guests of the Fenton Inn have much more to look forward to than simply the bed and the breakfast. Tucked literally into the hillside of the Blue Ridge mountains on Route 664, not too far from the Wintergreen Resort gatehouse, this idyllic little European village is a wild retreat and truly one for the storybooks. “Parts of Germany that you drive through look almost identical to Nelson County, minus the Bavarian Village,” says Will. “So we’ve solved that now!” BRL
ADVERTORIAL
Beneficiary Designations in Estate Planning By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC
FARM FRESH CIDER JUGGED BY OUR FAMILY FOR YOURS
Did you know that your Trust or Last Will & Testament may not control all your assets? Your Trust or Will may direct that certain people or charities are to receive a portion of your estate, but they might never actually receive anything. Such mistakes are preventable and can be corrected by a careful review of your overall estate and financial planning. Beneficiary designations are the “wild card” in estate planning. Primarily, the problem with beneficiary designations (including POD and TOD accounts) is that the designation on file with the financial company or bank holding the asset will control the distribution of the asset – no matter what your Trust or Will might say. For example, if you have a Will that states your children are to receive your estate in equal shares, but you have your favorite charity listed as the beneficiary on your bank CD, at your death, the charity will receive the entire bank CD and your children would not get any part of it. Since beneficiary designations “trump” your Trust or Will, the Trust or Will take second place to the beneficiary designations. Previously, I had a client who was leaving her estate to a niece who had faithfully cared for her over the years. At least, that was what her Will stated. However, when we began to review her investment accounts and bank CD’s, we quickly noticed that every single asset had a different beneficiary designation and none of the beneficiary designations was the beloved niece. If the aunt had deceased at that moment (before we could fix it all) the dearly loved niece would have received nothing from her aunt. Of course, the woman quickly coordinated her beneficiary designations with her Will. Beneficiary designations are also known as transfer on death or payable on death designations, often using the acronyms TOD or POD. Beneficiary designations can be made on those assets that can be transferred to any beneficiary you desire upon your death. These types of assets are epitomized by life insurance but can include checking and savings accounts, retirement accounts (like IRA’s), 401(k)’s, bank CD’s, mutual funds, many kinds of investment accounts, and even possibly real estate (through the use of a Transfer on Death Deed). The use of beneficiary designations has become so prevalent that a person’s estate may almost entirely pass to their beneficiaries via this method!
Cider Available Cider Pressing Demos Oct. 1st, 15th & 29th. Call for pressing times. For more information call 434-277-5824 www.SCSO.co
Unfortunately, many people will pass away leaving a Trust or Will that will never really do what they thought or intended because they failed to coordinate their beneficiary designations properly. Changing a beneficiary designation is easy and free with the company or bank, but should be done to dovetail with your overall estate planning goals and intentions. If you have questions or concerns about your overall estate planning, seeking the assistance of an estate planning attorney you trust may be very beneficial.

Summer Season Round-Up Another season comes to an end. For most, it means an end to another hot Virginia summer. To me, its all that and more. It also means another busy race season for the Virginia Off Road Series is wrapping up. This year, the Virginia Off Road Series has seen one of its most competitive and busiest seasons. At press time, the series will be at or near its 22nd or 23rd out of 24 race weekends. That’s a whole lot of mountain bike racing! But wait, the actual number of races will be closer to 32 as some weekend’s host multiple races. In all of that racing lie many opportunities for our 2,000 + competitors to score points, earn respect from their fellow riders and burn some rubber on all sorts of terrain. To reel it in and give everyone a fair chance, competitors will earn their final points based on their seven best races, plus extra credit for their betterment of trails and their rid-
ers across the state. The Virginia Off Road Series has a long history of not only racing on some of the finest trails in the country to actually participating in building them as well. This extra credit, we call VORS PayDirt. Participants have an incredible selection of race venues across the state, literally, to test their mettle against their competition. Then their highest seven scores in their respective categories, plus their PayDirt, will determine that category’s Champions. Nelson County helped add to the energy this year, too. Wintergreen Resort hosted three separate weekends of racing for their first Tread & Trail Series, which added three events to the Virginia Off Road Series. By the time you are reading this, the first King and Queen of Wintergreen will have been determined after earning points from all the trail running and mountain bike racing over those weekends. The Tread & Trail
Series had some great local support from Bold Rock Hard Cider, Crozet Running, Blue Ridge Cyclery, Starr Hill Brewery and Wintergreen Resort Premiere Properties. And a Big Tip of the Hat to Bold Rock Hard Cider for being the 2016 Presenting Sponsor of the Virginia Off Road Series. So this calls for a party! Mark your calendars for November 5 at Bold Rock Hard Cider Barn in Nellysford: 9am – noon: The day will begin with Group Mountain Bike Rides: (starting at 9am). - World Renown Mountain Bike Racer Jeremiah Bishop will be leading a Advanced Ride - Bold Rock MTB Team will lead two separate rides: an Intermediate & Women’s Ride - Cutaway/Miller School Kids Skills Clinic for kids 6-12 years old Noon – 3pm: Then there will be a display from Trail Advocacy Groups from around the state to chat it up
about the projects plus other added activities. 3 – 4pm : Awards and Podium Call Ups 4pm – 6pm- Live Music from Andrew Alli & The Mainline (Fun Blues-style) Bold Rock Hard Cider will be donating $1/pint sold on the day to be divided among the attending Trail Advocacy Groups: • Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club • Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Club • RVA MORE – Richmond Area • Greater Lynchburg Off-road Club • Pathfinders for Greenways – Roanoke/Carvins Cove James River State Park’s ‘Adventures on the James’ has one event to go: www.AdventuresontheJames. com October 15th – Fall Festival and night time 5K trail run

OCTOBER 2016
sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC
When the Keys Change Hands At some time in our lives, most of us will come to the point where it is time to turn the keys to the front door over to another family who aspire to make your home theirs. That first impression of your home, even before they have entered the drive, can easily move the needle a lot closer to closing the deal. Through careful design and execution of a plan, your landscape can adorn your home like a dress on a bride and deliver a lasting first impression. These are some things that I would pay close attention to – from the drive to the front door. A driveway is much more than just a method of getting from the street to your home – it allows you to control how you present your home to anyone that visits. Some of my favorite designs move the driver in broad curves that often allow a guest to gain multiple perspectives of the residence before they park. By recognizing the most powerful image of your home and designing the drive to present this image before your guest leave their vehicle, can go a long way to create a lasting impression. Equally important is the functionality of the drive in regards to driving in, turning around and exiting. Nothing can be more frustrating than a poorly thought out drive that does not take these basic maneuvers into consideration. A radius of 20 feet is necessary for a turnaround, a depth of 32 feet is necessary for parking, backing and exiting and a width of 12 feet is needed for both driver and passenger to exit the vehicle and not be off the driveway surface. From a landscaping perspective, nothing is more powerful than clean simple designs and lines. Pay attention to the ebb and flow of your grass in relation to the landscape beds. Long flowing lines that can be driven
by an SUV are much more desirable than lines that mimic an EKG. Resist lots of perennials and annuals in the front of the home and opt for low and conical evergreens to both border the residence and frame the corners respectively. Also keep your plant list under control, in particular in the front. Few buyers care to inherit a botanical garden that screams maintenance upon stepping out of their vehicle. Vary shapes, textures and heights and use more of less. Finally, avoid clutter and be sure that you research the ultimate size so as to not cover intricate detail on the home. Stepping stones and gravel can work in the back or side garden but the front entrance should be made of a material that has concrete as the base in the least. It’s more than a way to move into the home – it is a runway where new bike riders will be baptized, little legs will be exercised and prom dates will take deep sighs. It is also the realization that we are in a zone 5-6 and snow is inevitable. Shoveling snow off of gravel or a stepping stone walk is not only difficult, but can lead to floor damage as particles of stone inevitably end up scarring floors. Lastly, the front walk should frame the front door with undeniable perfection – both in the material used, the shape and width of the walk and how it ties in with the drive and the front. By planting large trees or shrubs, either in groups or dispersed in the landscape, a form of anticipation is achieved with a guest as they move from the street to the drive - in particular when in used in conjunction with the aforementioned, meandering driveway. No home is complete without large broad trees to provide shade, anchor the home, decorate the drive and provide for our winged friends.

Discover Why
Dear Dr. Steve, What’s M.R.S.A.? M.R.S.A. (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA for short), has been the cause of lots of questions lately. So, here is some information that I hope will be helpful. MRSA is a type of bacteria that is not destroyable by many of our regular antibiotics (the penicillins). Thankfully, we do have other antibiotics that do get rid of it. MRSA has been around in hospitals for a long time and outside of them for a while too. Recently, however, the type that is found outside of hospitals has gotten a lot of press. MRSA can live on the skin, and in fact is found there not causing any trouble in about 1% of the population. The problem is, it can get into scratches or cuts or other breaks in the skin and cause an infection that is harder than normal to treat. A MRSA skin infection can look like a red area, a boil, a cyst, or a pimple. It is often red, warm, painful, swollen, and sometimes drains pus. A wound or boil that does not heal should be looked at by a doctor,
but even then knowing which are MRSA infections can be difficult. Sometimes we have to do special tests on skin infections to see if they could be MRSA. People worry a lot about contracting MRSA from surfaces, such as school desks or public restrooms. The truth is, it is not nearly as common to pass the bacteria this way as it is from skin to skin contact. But, because it is possible for bacteria to live on objects, it is wise to not share things like towels, sports equipment, and razors. Washing hands regularly may be the best way to prevent the spread of MRSA. If you do have a skin infection, keep it clean and keep it covered. It would be extremely hard to pass MRSA from a wound that is washed and bandaged. MRSA in the community is a problem, but thankfully it is a preventable and treatable infection.
