thepublishers I remember the first time I said the d-word out loud. I was about 10 years-old, playing dodge ball (which I loved) at a summer day camp. I barreled the red rubber ball to my intended victim and missed. “D***!” I said it loud enough that a fellow male playmate noticed. He glanced over to me, slightly cocking his head. A few minutes later, I felt the sting of the same red rubber ball on my face and let out another, but stronger, “D***!” “Wow, Yvette. You’re cussing a lot,” he said. I’m not sure if he was shaming me for my newly acquired potty mouth or if he was amused. Fast forward the hands of time about 30 years and the kids and I are headed home when we see the red blurry streak of a fox dash across the road in front of us. “Grrr ...” I muttered, under my breath. But Adam must have read my thought bubble. “That d*** fox!” he shouted. “That darn fox, Adam.” I responded. “Well, if he kills one of our chickens, he’s a d*** fox!” He had a point. A few days ago a friend of mine

took me dove hunting and since I was a novice, I missed some close shots right off the bat. My semiautomatic mouth fired a few D’s and I was instantly embarrassed. A little trigger discipline would do my mouth and soul some good. I’ll be honest: I was expecting Tommy to drown those dove breast poppers in his beloved ketchup but he didn’t. Tommy and ketchup have a long, beautiful relationship that dates back to his childhood in West Tennessee. When we were dating, we’d go to the Arkabutla Dam in Mississippi on my off days from work and waste the afternoon away with box wine and ketchup-dipped tater logs from the Dam Store. Look it up. It does exist. And it was a mighty dam good time. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Magical Provence As we return from what’s become an annual trip to Provence—September being an ideal time because the tourists are leaving, yet the days are still sunlit and warm—we reflect upon the magic that is Provence. The writer and Provençal native, Frédéric Mistral, liked to remind God that when he doubted the world, to remember he created Provence. Provence, like Paris, is a state of mind, and no matter how many times I visit this land of fabled lore and pure light, or stroll a shaded street beneath its signature plane trees, Provence pleasantly surprises. There is a serenity that pervades in Provence that stems perhaps from the passage of time, centuries of life remaining nearly the same. In Provence time slows; it’s more deliberate, with emphasis on simple joys. We saw certain scenes repeated: rows of vines, groves of olive trees, and stone buildings lit by Provence’s unique light. And the markets. The markets, which hew to traditional values, clocking the seasons even better than the weather, are one of the most valued rituals. Piles of

figs, surely September’s finest treat, next to pumpkins, garlic and gourds. Tapenades, lavender, fresh pasta and cheese, all framed by the smiling, weathered faces of proud vendors selling their goods. Sometimes travel, especially in the face of uncertainty or fear, is the best action, for it destroys smallmindedness and misconceptions, and if it highlights cultural diversity, it also deepens our appreciation for our interconnectedness. I will miss the low humidity and days of intense clarity of light. I will miss that ineffable quality that is best summed up by the term la mentalité française, or a French mentality of life that encompasses daily markets versus Costco, long lunches taken outdoors on vine-shaded terraces, a certain way of being that places value on uncomplicated transactions and tradition, favoring quality over profit—a way of life whose simplicity I understand. But we return to our own special community, and our own special farmer’s market. And if I miss the croissants and butter every morning for breakfast, there awaits Heather’s

croissants (Little Hat Creek Farm) better than anything I tasted in France. And we have only to look around to see not only bread from Little Hat Creek or Goodwin Creek farms and cheese from Caromont, but all the other small farmers selling their wares, harking back to the basics and, by opting for quality, freshness and humane practices, standing strong against fast food, industrial cruelty and the tumult of time and technological change. La Bastide St. Dominique, Jules Rochebonne, 2014 (organic) – We were ever so grateful to Veronique, sister of winemaker Eric Bonnet, who was gracious and let us taste through the wines in the midst of the harvest, their busiest time. Cuvée Jules Rochebonne, named after Eric and Veronique’s grandfather, is a Côtes du Rhône but uncharacteristically it’s predominantly Syrah instead of the more common Grenache, making for a richer, inkier, denser and jammier Rhône. Look for aromas blackberry, leather, violet and black olives. There’s a light touch of tannin, with overall balance, smoothness and finesse. $22

STEW SEASON Savoring Brunswick Stew, a 19th century Virginia tradition

continued on page 12

OCTOBER 2017

Blue Ridge LIFE

11

Jane strolls up to the harvest table toting a big enamelware pot full of birdhouse gourds and an armful of cotton still on the stalk. She’s beaming her garden smile. In the eighteen years I have known Jane she always smiles the brightest when she’s showing me the pinkest zinnia, the tallest hollyhock, the jars packed with her glowing tomato crop. I grab an enamel pot, in keeping with the dress code, and we head to the butter bean patch. We’re in our comfort zone as friends, neighbors, gardeners, and today harvesters. We tease the plump pods out of the 30 foot row and settle in on the porch to shell them, flutes of Champagne between us. One never knows when a tradition will stick and it’s my birthday week. It feels celebratory, we’re having a Brunswick Stew tonight. A few days before I might have had the beans picked but I startled from my lima-plucking revelry and realized I was late calling Joe Haynes. Groveling my apology to his voicemail I hoped that somehow the author of Brunswick Stew: A Virginia Tradition might find my vegetative transport a valid excuse. He returned my call so perhaps he did. Joe’s answers to my questions, mainly about the execution of the recipe, were quick and sure. I was talking to an authority of the stew pot. Joe responded to me with secure, respectful deference. A confident teacher will send you on your own path just as Joe sent his blessings and reassurances to me. Late in our conversation Joe tells me of his concern for the “Virginia Barbecue Aesthetic.” Apparently there are those around the country capitalizing on the good name of Virginia born and bred Brunswick Stew and serving it improperly, on paper. Me, Miss Fussypaws, feels his pain. “In the depths of Brunswick’s Stew’s tradition how would it have been served?,” I ask. Joe pauses, then replies, “In a gourd.”. 12

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2017

My husband Timmy agrees to cut Jane’s birdhouse gourds in half with his band saw with the same enthusiasm as if I had asked him to lop off some digits. I say a prayer for his fingers and tend to another project. Soon guests are given spoons to scoop, and save, the seeds out of the gourds. According to Haynes, it was common for hosts to ask guests to provide their own flatware and cup. I think we’re on our game. An earlier call placed to my neighbor Anne brought out stacks of hand-turned and hand-carved bowls and trays, even some spoons. These the nascent efforts of her daughter, Jennifer, now a recognized woodworker. In Southeast Virginia, Brunswick County, a roadside marker, those mobile Cliff Notes of history, reads, “According to local tradition, while Dr. Creed Haskins and several friends were on a hunting trip in Brunswick County in 1828, his camp cook, Jimmy Matthews, hunted squirrels for a stew. Matthews simmered the squirrels with butter, onions, stale bread, and seasoning, thus creating the dish known as Brunswick stew. Recipes for Brunswick stew have changed over time as chicken has replaced squirrel and vegetables have been added, but the stew remains thick and rich. Other states have made similar claims but Virginia’s is the first.”

Written by Joe Haynes, Brunswick Stew: A Virginia Tradition, is due to be released in paperback October 9.

Haynes digs in, debunking other states’ claims to originating the stew. It is with careful investigation by Haynes that there is no question that Brunswick Stew belongs to Virginia but when exactly the technical first pot was stirred, that sounds like a conversation best pondered with Joe Haynes over a steamy cauldron. He suggests that “Uncle Jimmy Matthews” probably cooked up a maiden pot around 1816, years before that idolized hunting party. continued on page 14

The very sporting publisher of this magazine, Yvette Stafford, and I discussed the practicality of acquiring and dressing squirrels. Erroneously we thought rabbits to be a fine alternative, however, Joe Haynes points out that both of these game critters were surpassed by the domestic chicken for urban accessibility. Emboldened by Joe’s confidence in me I began by spatchcocking the three local chickens thawing in my sink. Utilizing the cast iron skillet seasoned from the morning’s breakfast sausage, I brown the chicken pieces, in batches, in liberal amounts of salt, pepper, and cayenne powder, the freshest I can find. The seasoning heats in the oils and the fragrance is elevated. The cooked chicken goes into a large stockpot and is just covered with water and set to simmer. Meanwhile in the skillet I fry about 14 ounces of bacon end pieces then add 5 chopped onions to them. In another pot heirloom tomatoes from the garden stew down to about five quarts of solids and liquids. I pick the chicken free from the bone and set it aside. To the chicken stock I add Russet potatoes, valued for their ability to break down unlike waxy varieties. The potatoes cook until they begin to soften. All of these flavorsaturated components conjoin in the big 20 quart pot. I add about three quarts of Nelson County grown shoe peg corn. While Jane stirs I toss in handfuls of just picked butter beans until the ratio looks about right. The “Virginia trinity” of corn, beans and tomato is complete. Hours of bubbling later the chicken has a finely shredded consistency, the potatoes are barely discernible, the flavors have melded like guests around the fire, 14

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21 After quoting the apostle Paul, Joe Haynes writes, “Virginia’s food traditions fall into the ‘good’ category. They are a reminder to Virginians of who we are and where we came from. They reflect the diversity of Virginia’s population throughout the centuries and transcend race, religion, politics and class.” A swift crack on the table and Yvette’s homegrown watermelon is jarred open in ragged spikes of sweetness. Fiona takes up

a sharp carving knife and slices tender fresh figs in half. The delight of the right tool for the job is evident on her face as her mother, Kate, stands on the table snapping overhead shots. The sun drops behind the mountain and we are left to our gourds and pot of stew with an appreciation for the tradition of sharing, in every way. Joe’s book has given us a thorough history of an iconic dish but as he writes, “This book isn’t as much about the past as it is about the future.” There will be more of this in our futures. BRL

Michael Dubova prides himself on being a self-taught, non-traditionalist when it comes to making his musical instruments. “I’ve never built two instruments the same. And I’ve done almost seventy-five mandolins, thirty guitars and other random pieces. There are so many different ideas and color schemes and grain patterns, why not tap into those and just kinda let each piece of wood dictate how the instrument’s gonna be,” he says. Dubova and I sat outside his home/studio, drinking out of Muddy Creek Pottery mugs, proving just how small the world really is. We’re friends with Noah, the guy who made them. Amidst his garden, he told me, “I’ve never been interested in building just your classic guitar that everybody has and everybody sees. I kind of have thought from the start that there’s enough of those in the world, why do I need to add my copy of that to the pile of what already exists.” Dubova has been a luthier since 2009 – crafting acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins, banjos, lap-steels, violins, and ukes – but his self-proclaimed “rambling story” really begins in 2007. “It’s not your classic story of how my Papa built mandolins and guitars, but instead I think it’s been a long eight or nine years of trial and error,” Dubova begins. “I graduated JMU with a nursing degree and I took my boards, but I had already decided I wanted to ride my bicycle across country. So, I packed up my bicycle and camping and fly-fishing gear, flew out to Portland and pedaled back home, and I ended my cross-country trip at Sugar Hollow.”

A year or so later, Dubova had the itch to pedal the southern part of the U.S., from San Diego to Virginia. “And I was five days into the trip, biking away, climbing mountains, and got really depressed and sat on the side of the road, just not sure if I could make it back to Virginia by pedaling,” Dubova explains. “I was really missing music, music is such a big part of my life and I didn’t have anything to listen to, didn’t have any instrument to play. So, I turned my bike around, shipped it back and flew home.” continued on page 20

Dubova came back and only started looking into building instruments because he saw his father-in-law working on a kit. “I got into it and I’d gotten a kit but didn’t know anything about wood-working, I didn’t understand sandpaper, or how to use a chisel, basic wood things like grain runout,” says Dubova. “So maybe I should have started with making a bird box because I just started with the mandolin and it was pretty complicated. And the first one was really bad.” The whereabouts of this first piece is currently and forever unknown, unfortunately. “I knew I could do better, I had a bunch of ideas to keep trying. The second one I made was totally from scratch, everything on my own, cutting the lumber down, carving everything, and that was also really bad.

“But it was different, I went in a totally different direction and then I think I just got addicted and kept trying. I kept trying and trying. I’d figure one thing out but then something else would be really bad, so on the next one I knew I had to fix both of those things.” From start to finish, every decision Dubova makes in the construction process is done for a reason. “It all starts from raw lumber and I get to mill it down and look for grain patterns that might compliment the flow of whatever instrument.” And almost like an homage to his hometown, he uses wood that can be found right in our backyard. “I think it’s neat if you can use woods that are from the Blue Ridge mountains. There’s so much potential in these forests, using Maple, Oak, Walnut, Sycamore, Poplar, all things that are domestic and in Virginia forests that are overlooked. I want to be true to where I’m from and the forests around us,” says Dubova. “I want there to be visible imperfections or visual disturbances throughout a piece that kind of make you stop and really look at it and not just briefly glimpse at it. Some of them reflect different thoughts I’ve had about things or current situations in the world. “If I do what speaks to me as far as an idea, there’s somebody out there that will also get it.” Turns out, Dubova’s work speaks to a lot of folks. continued on page 22

“I have a back-order of eight custom orders that I’m working on right now, but then you also have the people that don’t want to wait three to six months, so you try to have in-stock stuff,” tells Dubova. At this point in his career/obsession, Dubova is focused and driven, but respects the process of putting life into a musical instrument. “There are days when I just toss stuff out the window that is just not working, and it just turns into mulch. That’s why there’s no screen

on the studio window. If you could wander through these gardens or under the trees, you’ll see cut-outs of mandolins, just slowly decomposing.” Very circle of life. As our interview ended, I did a quick scope of the ground as we left the garden, hoping to see a graveyard of remnants scattered throughout. It wasn’t until my second visit that I spotted a wooden outline of a guitar hiding, unassuming under a pine tree. BRL

Did you know ... ? Interesting tidbits of information about our local real estate market

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Keeping things simple, here are some interesting fun facts regarding the Nelson County real estate market. (Statistical data was pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors MLS as of September 14, 2017.) What is the distribution of residential properties – for sale, pending sale, and sold? There are currently 252 residential properties for sale countywide in Nelson County. There are 42 under contract or pending sale and 265 have been sold in the past 12 months. What is for sale? Of the 252 residential properties for sale, the asking price ranges from $39,900 to $3,450,000. The median asking price is $297,000. There are 11 properties with an asking price greater than 1 million and 29 properties priced less than $100,000. Majority (86%) of the offerings under $100,000 are condos at Wintergreen.

What can you get for the money? There is literally something for every buyer at every budget. The least expensive property offered at $39,900 is termed by the listing agent as a “fixer upper” with 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, on a half acre of land. For considerably more cash at hand, one could get a “breathtaking” 247 acre estate with a main house, a stone guesthouse, stone barn, and renovated 1800s log house. What is the make-up of properties under contract? The median asking price of properties under contract is $242,449 with an asking price range from $45,000 to $1,650,000. Two pending properties are priced more than a million and 7 are under 100k. What has sold in the past 12 months? Sales have increased with the current number of sold residential properties for the past 12 months exceeding what is currently for sale. There have been 265 sales ranging

from $28,000 for a foreclosed home in Lovingston with 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and just under half an acre to $4,500,000 for a lodge style home along the Blue Ridge Parkway with 1,000 acres. The median selling price is $224,000. What area within the county has seen the most residential sales in the past 12 months? Wintergreen accounts for majority of the countywide sales across localities with 137 sales. Stoney Creek had 30 sales. There were 98 non-resort sales within the county. Excluding resort properties, the locality in greatest demand has been Afton with nearly a quarter of the sales. Afton is carrying a higher price tag as well; the sold median for that locality is $294,450. Have distressed sales made an impact? Nelson County continues to see some distressed sales, but not as many as in years past. There were 19 distressed sales in the past

434-996-3525

Afton is on the RISE! Afton accounts for nearly a quarter of all non-resort sales. The median selling price in Afton is 31% higher than the countywide median.*

12 months accounting for about 7% of all residential sales. What is the longest that a home has been on the market before selling? There are 9 homes that took more than 1,000 days to sell. A large estate in Wingina took 1822 days (4.99 years) to sell. Shortest days on market? On the flip side, 36 properties sold in less than 10 days. What was the largest acreage sold? The largest unimproved property to sell was a 1,631 acre parcel in Lovingston at $1,275,000. Smallest parcel sold? The smallest was a .39 acre parcel at Wintergreen, which also sold for the lowest price of any parcel at only $5,000.

CROZET

[ albemarle county ] STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

FIDELIS GREENS On one side of a gravel driveway on Randy Caldejon’s farm are rows of grapes that will be turned into wine for a nearby vineyard. On the other side of that farm road is a gleaming white 40-foot long shipping container bearing a green logo: Fidelis Greens. Marines mean business and this one could revolutionize ag technology.

Randy’s boots on the ground are two young men named Kyle McCrory and Joel Shindeldecker. Kyle’s an industrial designer who previously worked for Gotham Gardens, a New York City-based firm developing rooftop gardens. Joel has the business and sales background and came to Fidelis after working at a tech startup.

Back in February, the area’s vineyard and orchard growers were worried about an early frost that was threatening their fruit. Meanwhile just yards away from rows of Cabernet and Petit Manseng, sat a 320 square foot controlled growing environment immune to Mother Nature’s moods.

32

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2017

“We realized how fortunate we were to be able to grow without really any regard to the outside conditions with the environmental factors. Assuming we don’t lose power, we can grow,” Joel explains. “We were growing in over 100 degree heat the other day. We’ve grown in snow, hail has come through. Our plants aren’t affected.” Itching to move back to his native Albemarle County, Kyle began designing the Fidelis Greens shipping container while still in New York, after he had left Gotham Greens. The end result is a tiered production system, with six growing tiers within that space. “We’re controlling our temperature, humidity, light levels, CO2, all of our nutrients that go into our plants through hydroponic techniques. The whole idea behind that is to mitigate our risks in growing and increase our yields as well as utilize our resources efficiently. All of those things combined, we are a much more efficient operation. The goal of this project is to have a self sustaining, profitable, growing system, that can be operated with one or two people in a part time basis.” Mobile and modular. It’s a philosophy advocated by Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms in neighboring Augusta County, and the idea is spreading. Today happens to be the day before me and a friend are to process 50 meat chickens at my farm that were raised in a Salatin-style movable pen. Facilities that are portable and scalable can save farmers money and time without tethering them to costly property and equipment investments. That’s the kind of money talk that gets Joel Shindeldecker excited. “We could theoretically join several shipping containers, they’re so modular. We could really create local food farms anywhere.”

Brady S. Nicks Attorney-at-Law,

You could deploy one of these shipping containers anywhere that has electricity and water. Like a vacant lot in the middle of a food desert. Or your back yard. Joel swings open the door to the modest container to reveal a narrow array of flats resting under the glow of grow lights and under the surveillance of multiple sensor modules keeping tabs on things like temperature and light. Whereas greenhouses let in sunshine, the Fidelis Greens environment affords seedlings longer stretches of light as well as a consistent supply of water. Make no mistake, this is a laboratory sitting silently in Virginia wine country. Keep it tight. That’s one of the phrases that kept coming up during the startup process. On the one hand, it emphasized keeping the systems tight, as in, no leaks. On the other hand, it meant dialing in financial inputs and outputs. Kind of like when Kyle tacks on a candy order to some building materials. “When he buys jelly beans on the company credit card along with thousands of dollars of hardware materials, I notice that,” Joel says, chuckling. “But he hasn’t done it again.” The duo may seem all business but they’re not. Kyle and his wife are expecting their first child this fall. And Joel insists his socks aren’t all neatly arranged in his dresser drawer. “We wanted to join this [company] partially because of the lifestyle and mostly the team,” Joel explains. “We’re not completely bottom line people. What we’re doing could really revolutionize ag tech.”

And it could revolutionize the chef salad and sway the crankiest of chefs who have grown frustrated with a food movement that champions seasonality at the expense of consistency. Kyle gets it. “Coming from a produce background, I understand because if your quality is inconsistent, or if your varieties are inconsistent, or if your delivery schedules are inconsistent, that really can affect a chef’s livelihood. They consider themselves artists. I consider them artists. I can’t imagine a painter that couldn’t the same type of paint for their paintings. I think hopefully we can make chefs a little less cranky about it by providing a consistent, quality product yearround at the same price point.” Joel says they’re already getting positive feedback. “[They say] ‘not only are you growing beautiful things that actually taste good,’ I think come winter they’re going to realize how much more valuable it is to grow in such a controlled environment. They’ll be able to incorporate us into their menus rather than somebody driving buy and saying, ‘I have micro greens, do you want them this week or not?’” So for the chef who needs a consistent supply of high quality micro greens, Fidelis is currently growing red cabbage, arugula, a spicy mustard mix, one variety of mustard greens, and amaranth. Unlike conventional delivery methods, in which these greens would be clipped and delivered to restaurants and caterers in clamshell boxes -- trucked around for miles, ironically, in shipping containers -- chefs receive their greens on a living flat. The plants remain alive on either a jute or rockwool substrate until the chef picks them with his fingers and before spiraling them over a salad. “Not only do they get a living product that will last in the heat of the kitchen for 5 to 9 days ... we are growing within 15 miles of most of our restaurants,” Joel says. And that’s the goal: Chefs can keep local greens on their menu year round from the little shipping container that could. Always faithful, Semper Fidelis. BRL

Taylor Smack in 2006, holding the brewery’s original site plan. Since then, the operation has expanded in size and scope with Blue Mountain Barrel House in Arrington, and South Street Brewery in Charlottesville.

Mandi and Taylor Smack and Matt Nucci are celebrating a decade of business with Blue Mountain Brewery – the very first brewery in Nelson County – and they couldn’t be hoppier! Back in 2006, we featured a photo of Mandi, Taylor and Matt on the back of a pickup truck, (childless), in the middle of an open field, where the future Blue Mountain Restaurant and Brewery would soon break ground and set its foundation. The doors finally opened on October 24th, 2007 – it was a Wednesday – offering more beer options than food. “We offered something unique at Blue Mountain by getting folks out of the city and reconnecting beer to agriculture and just the whole experience,” explains Taylor Smack. “It became a domino effect after a while…every new visitor resulted in two more, etc., until you get to today, where we service over a quarter of a million visitors every year at our original location.” In 2010 the Afton location expanded to accommodate the overwhelming clientele hoping to enjoy their buds and suds while overlooking the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains – including a full food menu. There may not be 99 bottles of beer on the wall, but there are numerous awards and medals for their tasty brews. continued on page 40

It’s hard to believe that a decade ago, Blue Mountain Brewery was a modest business plan with a stake in the field. Ten years later, the popular brewery is a landmark on the heavilytraveled Route 151 stretch of the Brew Ridge Trail.

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2017

In October of 2011, these folks picked a second location and set up shop in Arrington with the Barrel House – their main brewing, bottling and distribution center. And as a cherry on their sundae of success, the owners decided to purchase Charlottesville’s South Street Brewery, a nostalgic and important starting point for both Mandi and Taylor. Their ten-year anniversary may officially be in October, but on Friday the 16th of September, Mandi and Taylor Smack started celebrating early at Misty Mountain Music Festival VII, where they’ve been a proud sponsor for all seven years. “This whole year we’ve kind of been celebrating,” laughs Mandi. “Every time we make up a new idea or a new beer, we kind of relate it to, ‘Ya know what? It’s our tenth year, let’s go all out!’” Between business hours, the three owners are an unstoppable force of drive and professionalism. There are few restaurant’s that I know of where the owner can be found at the host stand on a busy Saturday, but Mandi is always there, armed for battle, just like the rest of the staff. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Mandi explains. “I think it’s really important to be part of what you want the vision of your company to be, and you gotta be on the front-lines.” But after hours, they’re just regular people like you and me. And they still know how to have a good time – maybe now more than ever. I may have only worked at Blue Mountain for three out of the ten years they’ve been in business, but there have been several festivals in the past where Mandi and I have stood at the front of the crowd, stainless-steel Blue Mountain pint glasses in hand, swaying and singing together as one. So, it seems rather fitting to have conducted our interview at Misty Mountain Music Fest, beverage in hand. “Festivals are my favorite location to work,” Mandi tells me at the beer tent. “I love being with my staff and meeting new people. You need to relate to your customer and see how things are changing or how they just love that Full Nelson. We always want people to have a good experience, and we have since day one.” Blue Mountain wants you to help them celebrate their first decade down by joining together for ten days of fun! There will be live, local music as well as fun giveaways each day at the original location in Afton – not to mention they will be hosting ten tap-takeovers at different venues across the state from Richmond to NOVA to Charlottesville. Each event will offer ten varieties of Blue Mountain beers, with real throw-backs and tributes to the original brews offered on day one. Cheers! BRL

Blue Ridge LIFE

OCTOBER 2017

Pansy Like elves working in Santa’s workshop, nurseryman around the country each year work on improving goodies for gardeners from sea to shining sea. Of these genii that decorate every garden center from now until Christmas, one particular genus excites me each year more and more due to their innate ability to draw me into my favorite time of year – fall. They are the pansy. And aside from their name, there is nothing ‘pansy’ about them… In choosing your pansies for the fall, remember one rule that will determine whether they decorate your landscape for the next 6 months or just a few days post-purchase – that rule is timing. Once you make it to about the end of September, pull out those pruning sheers and/or shovel and begin making space for them – whether it be removing old, spent annuals or improving soil for a new area. This may contradict your better garden sense because your annuals may actually be perking up from the decreased humidity and cooler nights and therefore could be putting on a show similar to their early spring display. Trust me, ripe them out. Even though pansies are tough, without time to put our new root growth, frost and freeze are tougher and Father Time does not offer countless warm opportunities in the fall for them to grow as we approach record cold and snow falls this fall (and yes, this is wishful thinking!). In regards to varieties, you have dozens to choose from. The biggest factor that should dictate which ones go where should always be bloom size – close to the house, bigger blooms (2 ½ inches); away from the house, smaller blooms (1-1 ½ inches). The reason is actually quite simple. Smaller blooming varieties typically have many more flowers per plant while bigger blooming

varieties have fewer blooms per plant. Therefore close to your house you can actually appreciate the size, texture and color much better than while moving along at, let’s say, 20 miles per hour. However, when you choose the smaller flowering varieties and plant them in mass, an F-14 approaching Mach 1 would be able to appreciate the color (Ok, that may be a stretch, but you get my point). Remember also that the smaller flowering varieties typically recover faster from inclement weather since they have more flower stalks per plant and each bloom has less surface area to be affected by ice, snow and freeze than the larger blooming varieties. As for color, I try to keep dark colors (blues and purples) planted with lighter, complimentary colors just behind (whites and yellows), especially when it comes to roadside plantings. I feel that this tactic helps to draw the eye to the darker color – especially if the two colors are indeed complimentary. So if you go for the blue with a yellow eye near the mailbox, try a yellow or off-yellow as its backdrop. If a total mix is your medicine, implement this planting near the house so that a guest can appreciate each and every color and not just see a mosaic of shades if viewed from a car window. Remember, the closer you get to your house, the more detail can be appreciated. As always, after planting water well and feed with a well-rounded, slow release fertilizer. By the way, if you don’t want to deadhead your pansies then don’t – research has shown that it really does not help that much. My personal favorite series are the Sky (Clear Sky & Skyline), Majestic Giant, Delta, Matrix and Bingo Series. With these series, in regards to color, the sky is the limit.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My knee hurts. Would a cortisone shot fix it? Cortisone (or steroid) shots can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal pains. Cortisone is a steroid chemical that the body naturally produces. In a shot, we use a man made version. Its purpose is to reduce inflammation. Often a joint or bursa hurts a lot when there is inflammation from an injury, overuse, or arthritis. The steroid is put directly into the joint where the inflammation (and resultant pain) is by a shot. This allows us to use a high dose of steroid into one specific area so that there really aren’t many side effects in the body overall. The following are a few situations where a steroid shot may be considered. A painter who works with his arms overhead starts to get shoulder pain. We try exercises and medicines by mouth, but he is still having a lot of trouble. A shot of steroid in the shoulder may cut down inflammation enough to both stop his pain and allow his joint to heal. Another example might be a runner with knee pain. After careful determination

Discover Why that there is no broken bone or torn tendon, a steroid shot placed into the knee may give great relief. Or, an otherwise healthy person starts to have hip pain every time she lies down on her left hip. There is a bursa there that can get irritated and does quite will with a steroid injection. Cortisone shots can be used many other places as well, these are just a few examples. Certainly there are risks from a steroid shot, but they are generally minor and rare. It does hurt a little as it is a shot! But we use a numbing spray before inserting the needle. Skin color change in the injection area is possible. On occasion people get a “steroid flare” where the pain gets worse before it gets better. Finally, joint infection is possible (but very uncommon). Doctors use careful sterilizing techniques to prevent this. So, if you have joint pain that is not going away, see your doctor. Perhaps a steroid injection would help you.
