from
thepublishers Between Peyton’s pink guitar, Adam’s mini solar system, and their homemade sock dolls (those poor things), I’d say the birthday kids are pretty darn happy and mighty protective of their loot. Peyton has gone to bed with her guitar ever since she got it. And even though I was nervous about her crushing or dropping it at night, her fascination with her pink helium balloon is what really tested my mommy nerves. It had nothing to do with inhaling the gas and talking like a chipmunk, and it had everything to do with the fact that helium is lighter than air. Releasing a balloon into the sky may not seem like a big deal but for some reason, the thought of seeing my little girl’s happy face dissolve into tears should she accidentally let go of her balloon formed a large nasty lump in my throat. Up, up it would go into the sky, carried away by the wind until the sparkly orb shrunk to the size of a dot. And the instant her mind would make sense of the magic, Peyton would lower her outstretched arm, look at me with tear-shined eyes, and release a heartbreaking wail. But this little girl never let go of her treasured balloon. Each day she
guarded it as it slowly shriveled, keeping it tethered to her sticky hands. Eventually, the wrinkled balloon lost its lift and drifted away from Peyton’s mind. A new fascination with stickers (see above picture), would replace the metallic bubble. There will come a day Peyton climbs into a car with a sack of Thanksgiving leftovers and drives off and away. The hands that grabbed that balloon string so tightly will be steering a wheel and that car (hopefully it will be a truck!) will shrink to the size of a dot at the end of a highway. But until then, we shall never let go of our shiny balloons. Happy Thanksgiving! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

It’s that time ... Thanksgiving specials It’s that time again when we gluttons each try to out-glutton each other and eat as much as humanly (or beaglely) possible, spreading our tables with the savory dishes we knew in childhood, including grandmother’s sweet potatoes topped with the finest Marshmallows. That time when I try to match wines to the varied array of dishes without giving guests indigestion. Picks for apéros: From Italy’s Veneto, Bebe Prosecco Frizzante Rosé - a lightly sparkling blend of Prosecco and Raboso, with a nose of fresh strawberries. Ideal with salty pre-feast appetizers. $14 White picks: In order to avoid that too-full feeling, stay clear of overoaked whites, choosing instead those with good fruit or acidity: dry Chenin Blanc, Albariño, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Gris, Riesling and, a Thanksgiving favorite, Gewürztraminer. Look for whites with enough body to stand up to turkey and trimmings, yet the acidity to cut through cousin Eunice’s sausage stuffing. Dirler Schimberg, Pinot Gris, 2007. This estate makes
excellent organic wines in small production. Body, elegance and taste in one beautiful bottle. $24 Red picks: While it’s true that Thanksgiving allows us the opportunity to raid wine cellars sharing treasures with our nearest and dearest, my advice is to save your best for a less… complicated meal. No one wants to find Uncle Albert has mistakenly mixed the ‘82 Latour with his Bourbon and Coke. Lighter reds do best: Gamay (Beaujolais), Barbera, Dolcetto, Frappato and Pinot Noir. On my table this year: Lodali Barbaresco, 2010 – While many Barbarescos are big and tannic the Lodali is drinking splendidly now. Hints of herbs and cherry fruit. $22 And the perfect turkey Pinot? Domaine Tortochot Morey St-Denis, 2011. Light, luscious and lovely. $36 In truth, it is that time again, a time when we gather together, giving thanks for all we have: each other, this often intensely beautiful world, and wonderful food and wine…grandma’s Marshmallowed sweet taters notwithstanding. Loire Valley, vineyards and châteaux. May 2014. Reserve your spot: Kpfaltz@cstone.net.

CROZET
[ albemarle county ] STORY by MARCIE GATES PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER
There is a Trappist Monastery in Crozet, unseen to those who do not go looking for it, where the sisters of Our Lady of the Angels have a very particular
“whey of life. Mother Marion Rissetto , and Sisters Maria Gonzalo-Garcia and Barbara Smickel pose for a portrait with the gouda cheese they make at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery (above). Mother Marion Rissetto places the individual cheeses into a brining solution where the cheese sits overnight before being waxed and then aged (at left).

“We started out with six sisters, and we are now fourteen and growing, just like the cheese business,” says Sister Barbara, one of two remaining original sisters chosen to found the monastery in 1987. Originally from southern California – “many many moons ago” – Sister Barbara spent thirty one years at a monastery in Massachusetts before coming to Virginia. “The former owner had a little cheese making business going on the property, and about two-thirds of the equipment was here. We added to the equipment because we wanted to modernize it.” Although admittedly naïve at the beginning of their ventures, the sisters’ faith didn’t falter, and they began making cheese in November of 2009. Sisters Maria Gonzalo-Garcia, Barbara Smickel and Nnaemeka Maduko wax cheeses at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery (top). Sister Maria Gonzalo-Garcia hand cuts some of the curds that stick to the edges of the settling tank (above).

“Our particular type of Christian life includes the ideal of self support. Our tradition is to live by the labor of our hands and to have something also to share with those who are less fortunate. So that’s the way we operate,” 2238 Tanners Ridge Condo Wintergreen, VA $120,900 CAAR MLS 512325 Postulant Myriam Saint-Vilus and Sister Kathy Ullrich maneuver a cart of gouda to the brining room.

says Sister Barbara. “It really is fun to start out with an ocean of milk in the morning at 4:15 when they start the pasteurizing, and then to end up about twelve hours later with a lot of little golden balls of cheese floating around in the salt brine. There’s something very satisfying about it.” With a product that requires much more effort to create than to consume, these sisters seem to have found their niche with these two-pound red-waxed wheels. “We make 20-21 thousand pounds of cheese a year, and we sell it all through the mail and at the monastery,” says Sister Barbara. “We don’t do wholesale, and we usually sell out before Christmas. It’s very popular all year round, but it’s most popular as Christmas gifts.” Considering they are actually making cheese only one day out of the week, imagine what they could do with seven. “We live a rather intense life of prayer and silence the rest of the time, so I think the good manual labor is a nice balance to that. We try to go about it prayerfully, and we pray while we’re doing it. It’s integrated into our whole life. And I do think it’s a good human thing to use our bodies in the service of God, not just our minds, so the whole person is involved.” For all of those curious as to what “secret ingredient” can be attributed for these sisters success, you’ll have to do without. “The recipe for making Gouda, that’s standard, you can look that up in the Encyclopedia, that’s no secret. But the way you do it, the care with which you do it, the cleanliness with which you do it, the exactitude the way you watch times and temperatures and everything. That’s what makes the difference,” says Sister Barbara. “Part of our tradition is to do whatever we can the best we can, for the Lord and for one another, and that carries over to the cheese-making. We’re about something else. We’re here to live a complete life of work and worship. And we look for some means of self support that will fit into that ideal. We’re not out to become the craft of Crozet. We’re just happy to be the Monastery Country Cheese.” BRL

3 HIDDEN DANGERS FROM SUNLIGHT THAT ENTERS YOUR HOME.
UV Rays, Infrared Heat, & Visible Light are destroying everything inside your home. They also have an impact on your family’s health.
TRUTHS
MYTHS
• UV Rays are solely responsible for sun damage and fading • Conventional window treatments such as blinds or curtains stop fading • Double pane/LowE windows filter enough damaging rays to prevent fading • Only direct sunlight causes significant damage
• 3 types of sun rays are responsible for fading: UV, Infrared, & Visible Light. • Closed Blinds/Curtains still allow damaging rays inside your home. • Double pane/LowE windows can filter some UV Rays, but reject very little if any of the Infrared or Visible light.
SOLUTION: 3M™ Window Films installed by Clear View Window Tinting
• Reject 99.9% of UV Rays, up to 97% Infrared, & up to 85% visible light • Applied to existing windows, so they’re filtering 24/7—365 days a year. • Are very light & low in reflectivity. You literally can see through them better than clear glass.

continued from page 12
Archaeologist Randy Lichtenberger of Hurt & Proffitt, Inc. and Keith Adams, Adjunct Instructor of Archeology at Sweet Briar College are determined to uncover the history of the old Amherst county seat. Dating back to the 18th century, Cabellsville could have been a popular settlement before Nelson County was founded in 1807 and divided the county. Currently living on the property now scattered with bright orange flags marking future test sites, Ron and Lauren Anderson couldn’t be more excited about the project. “My Great Grandfather, Richard Nelson Wood, bought the property after the original Amherst County Court House burned to the ground. The people living in the ACCH at the time, rebuilt, but then had to sell and Grandpa Wood bought it,” says Lauren. More than 30 volunteers have been shovel-testing a 10-acre chunk of the site for only three days, but they’ve already scored big finds. Unearthing several pieces of glass and multiple remnants of Creamware and Delftware, or tin-glazed pottery, are all good indications of early domestic life. “Creamware is more like 1760ish, and Pearlware replaced that around 1782 or so. So it’s all from the right period of what we’re looking for,” says Randy. “So these are early artifacts, and that along with the handmade brick and the wrought nails, that suggests we’re into the kind of stuff we’re looking for from the courthouse town,” says Randy. With their three-day survey showing such great results, this team is already planning a return in the spring to resume the hunt for the lost village and courthouse. Stayed tuned folks. The mystery of Cabellsville isn’t going to be buried for long. BRL

2013 third quarter residential real estate summary
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Nelson County real estate is finally headed in the right direction – UP! As we close out the third quarter of residential sales, the market continues to improve on all fronts. In comparing the first 3 quarters of 2013 with the same time period in 2012, increases were exhibited in number of sales, average price, median price, and price per sq ft. Here is a quick market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Q1-Q3 Countywide Overview; 172 residential properties sold in Q1Q3 of 2013 which represents a 47% increase from the same time period in 2012 when 117 properties sold. Q1-Q3 Statistical Comparisons; Q1-Q3 2012 recap: median $234,000, average price $251,533, Average price per sq ft 137.43, Days on Market (DOM) 206. Q1-Q3 2013: median $245,950, average price
$264,460, Average price per sq ft 139.43, Days on Market (DOM) 198. The 2013 market has shown increases in the number of sales and price while experiencing fewer days on market. While the amount of sales has increased significantly, the price increase is marginal because there is still a lot of inventory/competition; there are currently 338 properties for sale with an average price per sq ft of $175.72. It is also important to note that the properties that are actually selling are the ones that are priced appropriately for the market. Value is an important decision making tool for buyers when there are so many options available for purchase. Q1-Q3 Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 79 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 24 sales, and all other nonresort or county properties with 69 sales. When comparing Q1-Q3 2013 sales with Q1-/Q3 2012 sales, all 3
Marlo Allen
markets saw an improvement; Stoney Creek realized the most significant increase in sales volume at 118%, followed by county/non-resort at 64%, and Wintergreen at 23%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 79 properties sold representing 26 detached homes and 53 attached/ condos. Hence, 67% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the county locality with the most sales was Afton with 18 sales representing 26% of the county/non-resort sales. Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; Q3 with 73 sales was the strongest quarter followed by Q1 with 54 sales and Q2 with 45 sales. The strongest month for Q1-Q3 was July with 28 sales followed by September with 25 sales. The slowest month was June with only 8 sales. Let’s reflect upon this data further by assuming the following quarterly and seasonal relationships: Q1 – Winter,

Q2 – Spring, Q-3 – Summer, Q4 – Fall. (The quarters and seasons do not align precisely, but most of the seasons are encased in these quarters.) Many people think that spring is going to consistently be the best time of year to sell; perhaps nationally that may be the case, but it does not hold true for Nelson County. In 2012, the highest sales were in Q4/ Fall and the lowest sales were in Q2/ Spring. So far in 2013, the strongest Qtr has been Q3/Summer and the slowest has been Q2/Spring. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. When Appalachian Heart was published I took everyone interviewed a book and asked them to sign my copy. I knew it would take a good week because you don’t just walk into a mountain person’s home and stay ten minutes. You’ve got to catch up on the news and sit down for some fresh cobbler. I came home with more than I left with, along with an overflowing heart. First stop was Ruby Coffey. At 89 years of age, she is the eldest person who still remembers what early life was like in the place I call home. The day I came her great niece, Kellie Mize, was there. Kellie, seven, couldn’t get over her great Aunt Ruby being in a “real” book. Next was William and Kitty Coffey. William was working his garden when I pulled up and showed me a row of the biggest onions I ever saw. He called them “Candy Sweet” and after our visit I left with a bag of those sweet onions. At Glenn and Lorine Allen’s we caught up on all the news and as I walked out to leave Lorine hailed me down to return a book I had lent

them. She always says, “Don’t let me forget to give you that book.” We always forget! I headed to the Lofton area where Lorean Painter lives. Once again a talk-fest ensued before I bid her goodbye and drove to LaRue Wilson’s farm in Raphine. I got a tour of her sewing room to see the newest quilt she was piecing together; a seascape in vibrant blues. I backtracked to Spottswood and hugged Lura Steele who had a cup of coffee and a ham biscuit waiting for me. From there I made my way up the backside of Rt. 56, heading for two of my favorite people’s house, Lowell and Viola Humphreys. I admired their garden, which like ours, Lowell said was late in coming. I got a yellow rose from Madeline Grant and her daughter Patty who live in “downtown” Montebello. We had a good sit in the front porch rockers before I headed to my last stop of the day, the Cash sisters. It was good they were my last stop because after leaving I cried all the way home. On the back cover of Appalachian Heart is a photograph of Frances and Mary that I took last year when they were out cutting wood. They are tough mountain women and I love them unabashedly. Driving up I saw Frances back into the woods. Both sisters are shy but when I called her name she acknowledged me and said, “Mary, come on out, it’s Lynn.” We went inside and when I asked them to sign their names in my book, both took the pen and made X’s above their picture. Realizing they may not be able to read well, I volunteered to read it to them. Looking up I would see the sisters alternately smiling or wiping away a tear. With a lump in my throat it was all I could do to finish. I left and made it to the Blue Ridge Parkway before breaking down in sobs that lasted the whole way home. At Icem and Peggy Lawhorne’s I got ginger snap cookies, fresh peach cobbler at Agnes Thompson’s, country ham from Buck Harris, and much laughter around Clemon and Peggy Lawhorne’s kitchen table. At Ted and Jane Hughes house I was introduced to peach donuts, which isn’t a confection at all but a donut-shaped peach. Devereaux Davis insisted on paying for his book until I told him he gave me his life story and I was simply giving it back to him. Twins, Martha Ramsey and Mary Wright fed me fresh apple pie and ice cream and a container of homemade apple jelly to take home. They are pictured above. At Lila Campbell’s the same gray kitty who welcomed me for the initial interview was there waiting patiently for his “pats” at the back door. The icing on the cake was waiting at home; a note from Agnes Thompson thanking me for writing her story. She signed off saying, “May the good Lord continue to bless you and Billy as you bless the lives of the people you meet. A scripture was printed at the bottom; Philippians 1:3; I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. Life doesn’t get any better than this and for that I am thankful. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! BRL Lynn will have the following book signings in the month of November: Nov. 2, Ted & Jane Hughes’ open house in Arrington, 9-4 pm – Nov. 9, Staunton Bookworks, 2-4 pm – Nov. 16 New Dominion Bookshop in Charlottesville, 12:00 noon – Nov. 30, Blue Moon Antique Mall in Lovingston, 1-4.

THE SPIRIT OF
SILVERBACK Ladies and Gentleman, it is my pleasure to introduce Nelson County’s newest addition to the 151 crawl. A libation created for the happy and the sad, the good and the bad. Silverback Spirits will soon be offering a beverage in a category all on its own, specializing in spirits such as vodka, gin and whiskey. “A lot of whiskey,” says UVA graduate, former Air Force Intelligence Officer and Principal for Silverback Spirits, Denver Riggleman. And although both were born and raised in Virginia, Denver and Christine have only been in Afton since July of last year. “Denver was in the military for a while, so we’ve travelled all over the country and finally came back to the area,” says CEO, Founder and Distiller, Christine Riggleman. “We wanted to put a business on the front of the property. That was part of the reason we bought it. We weren’t sure what we wanted to do at the time, but we wanted to live here a little bit and see what would fit best. We wanted to compliment the area.” “The plans for the distillery were absolutely spontaneous… And we were actually told by certain people that were experts in the field that there was no way we would get off the ground in two years. So we sort of took that as a challenge,” states Denver. Incorporating their business on April 19 of this year, completing the county commission site-plan checklist, designing their bottles and building, and breaking ground within six months seems to prove those experts challenged the wrong alpha-male. continued on page 28

It’s been this way for over 30 years.
“We just set a plan, got the right people together and went for it,” Denver says simply. “Christine’s coordinated Joe Dangler, who ran Bowman Distillery for thirty-two years, as our consultant. We have Allan Guy, who designed the Bacardi bottles doing our bottles. And we hired probably the best person in the world to run our distillery on the operations side, which is Blake Rhodes. He has a Bachelor’s in Biology, Minor in Chemistry, and he’s been our friend since 1986, so he’s been amazing. It’s been a team effort.” With high spirits and big dreams, the Silverback team isn’t forgetting where they started. “We are planting some of our own fields to use in the distillery. We’re trying to keep everything that we can as local as we can,” says Christine, referring to an exact wheat strain they are growing exclusively for Silverback. “Some of the local businesses have been absolutely perfect for us. We’re working with the local farmers to be able to use their products as well,” Denver continues. “We want it to feel really cool, we’re trying to make a fun strong atmosphere, but we don’t want it to take away from where we are. We want it to be local, but we also want it to be national, that’s why we named it Silverback. It’s my nickname.” “We have three daughters and he grayed very early,” adds Christine laughing. “We always call him our silverback. And he happens to be allergic to beer and wine, so I wanted to make something that he can drink.” The only thing more impressive than this alpha-pair and their check-list is their to-do list. With grain to be planted, ingredients and equipment to be gathered, and a tasting-room to build, these guys aren’t losing site of their goal. “Our target date to open our doors is late spring/early summer 2014. That would put us in the time frame of 12-14 months from the date of our incorporation”. Seems their slogan is more like a lifestyle. “Rule your nest. Be an Alpha.” BRL

Emily Hancock didn’t know she was carrying on the family business when she started up St Brigid Press in Afton two years ago. But once she found out, she was even more excited to keep pressing on. “About six to eight months after I started doing letter press printing, I was talking to my parents about it, and my mom said, ‘Well, you know you have printers on both sides of your family,’” Emily recounts affably. “I have a great uncle on my father’s side and on my mother’s side who were both printers and book binders. And one of them, Uncle Percy, helped run the print shop for the town of Pinehurst in North Carolina for a long time.”

Besides the unfailingly cool inherited back-story, Emily had her own reasons for falling in love with the business. “Language, particularly poetry, is my passion. My literary education started with my parents. My mother read Emily Dickenson and Robert Frost and Tennyson to me, and my father read Thoreau and Emerson to me. So I come at this out of literary roots, not so much hand-craft roots, but I’m joining the two,” says Emily. “I had picked up a book of poetry that was letter-press printed and I went, ‘Oh my gosh, this is a gorgeous manuscript that embodies the word and the craft in the way that they weave together’. It was a huge ‘Ah-hah!’ moment.” Once she had the trade, all she needed was the tools. “I happened to find some equipment for sale by a few of the fellas, who are really some of the grand-masters of the tradition, John Falstrom, Gary Johanson, and John Barrett in New England,” Emily continues. “So I went to visit them and bought the used equipment. And they were extremely generous with their time and expertise and kind of got me started off on the right foot.” Getting the pieces into the basement of her home was an undertaking all its own. The most massive item in her collection, a Chandler and Price Press made in Ohio in 1914, weighs in at just under a thousand pounds. continued on page 32

“Oh, I’m never moving,” Emily says laughing. “But one of the surprising things for me in this whole endeavor is how much I have come to enjoy and appreciate the machinery that goes with it – the technology of its day. It’s over one hundred years old and the elegance of the weaving of the form and the function, it’s just so cool to me.” Although obviously a significant part of the printing press process, Emily came to find that there’s much more to the business than just the presses themselves. Her shop is now well stocked with cabinets filled with old metal and wood block alphabets in a variety of typefaces. Not

to mention a room devoted to nothing but book-binding. “I have drawers and drawers of nice, lovely, luscious paper to which there’s a whole world unto itself that I didn’t know about, but I’m starting to learn,” says Emily. “This past January I was fortunate enough to be chosen to do a winter residency in letter-press printing at Penland School of Crafts, down in North Carolina, and that really jump-started the whole process.” At the end of the day, creating something new out of something old is truly a point of pride for Emily and her business. “I believe that just because something or some process or some person is old doesn’t mean it’s out of date. I believe that some of our traditions can still have value and creative vitality, even in the digital age.” The digital age does have its advantages, as St Brigid Press products are mainly sold on their website, www.stbrigidpress.net, but also at Stone Soup Books in Waynesboro and the Sacred Circle in Staunton. Just remember that when you buy something Emily made, you’re not just getting a mass produced item you can find anywhere, you’re getting a beautiful marriage of literature and hand-craft. BRL

Cotton – It’s Not Just for Clothes Growing your own greenery for Christmas decorations is a great and resourceful idea. My mother has always cut boxwood, holly and magnolia from our yard for her Christmas decorations. This year as you begin to pull out that attic full of decorations and venture into the yard to cut your greenery (or to a garden center to purchase them), keep your mind open to new and interesting options that you might plant next year with the intention of decorating for Christmas. One particular plant that can be used dates me back to 1991 while I worked in Suffolk, Virginia. Most of us think red, green and white when we look for decorative vegetative options for Christmas. Red and green are relatively easy. White can be a tough one, unless of course you come from Tidewater. On my way home from work one evening, I noticed a huge field of cotton just beginning to break open alongside Highway 17– brown stalks on waist high plants absolutely covered in paper white cotton balls that were bursting out of their deep tan, pentagonal shells. With each about the size of a golf ball, the field was as covered in white as my imagination was covered in possibilities of using such natural vegetation that I had never seen before in Christmas decorations and design concepts. Before anyone could catch me, I had a bunch cut and stowed away in my Jeep Grand Cherokee and was back on 17 moving towards my apartment. Using this plant for a decoration is as easy as using boxwood, holly and magnolia. The only difference is the life of the decoration as most of the aforementioned items quickly become fragile and leave a trail of berries or brown crumbling foliage around the home in the month long
holiday unless replaced often or antidesiccants are used. Not cotton. After 30 days of fa-la-la, my house was as absent of debris from the plant and fiber as it was before they were introduced to my one bedroom apartment. As a side note if you do use anti-desiccants, do not dip or spray the cotton since doing so invariably ruins the fluffy cotton look and removes some of the sheet-white luster the cotton naturally has. In decorating inside the home; boxwood as a strong foundation with touches of winterberry and cotton along the way is really hard to beat. Spray your boxwood and berries first and then add the cotton. Magnolia ‘DD Blanchard’ and even it’s vertically challenged sister ‘Little Gem’ naturally have a tan underside to the leaf. Envision a sharp glossy green with a tan underside mixed with a tan, partially opened cotton ball with its paper white core protruding out… at least to me, it looks pretty cool. At most add some red from a winterberry and your ensemble is complete. If you have a garden, growing cotton is easy. My wife and I planted some this year. We seeded it as soon as danger of the last frost was over. It required very little attention (full sun, adequate water, we didn’t really spray anything) although it does take up quite a bit of garden space and has a LONG growing season. If all goes as planned you can expect a mid fall harvest. And you can even use it in the landscape. If you think that your winterberry is a real show in the autumn and early winter? Try adding a handful of cotton plants to the back of the sunny perennial border. Yes, you will yawn all summer at this selection but as autumn marches forward and the leaves begin to fall…BAM! An early ‘snow’ and later, plenty of decorations for the above fa-la-las...

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My kids have lice! How could this happen? The new school year brings many exciting things into our homes, but unfortunately head lice may be one of them! Head lice are insects that can live on people’s heads and feed on blood. They are usually spread through contact with the hair of an infested person - the lice must crawl and cannot jump or fly. They are not spread by cats, dogs or other pets. Spread by contact with clothing, combs, brushes, towels, etc. is uncommon. Personal hygiene or cleanliness has nothing to do with getting head lice. Nits are eggs laid by the adult female head louse and are firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are oval-shaped and very small and hard to see. After 8-9 days a nymph hatches from the nit and matures into an adult in 9–12 days. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, has six legs, and is tan in color. To survive, adult head lice must feed on blood. An adult head louse can live about 30 days on a person’s

head. Adult female head lice can lay about six eggs each day. Symptoms of lice may include a tickling, moving sensation in the hair. There may be sores on the head from scratching. The diagnosis of head lice is made by finding a live louse in the hair, but they can be difficult to find. The use of a magnifying lens and a fine-toothed comb may be helpful. If crawling lice are not seen, finding nits firmly attached within a ¼ inch of base of the hair shafts strongly suggests that a person is infested and should be treated. Over the counter medications, such as Rid and Nix are used to treat head lice. Household contacts may need to be treated also. If these treatments are not successful then prescription medications are available. Be sure to contact your doctor if there are questions about head lice.

PREVENTING FALLS
By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center
Nordic Walking It is hiking season in Nelson! The crisp air beckons us outside. I beckoned my kids for a hike on White Rock trail recently. We geared up; my daughter had my trekking poles and my son and I each used one pole from an older set that I have. We hiked the trail in less time with ease which I attribute to my kids using the poles. The use of trekking poles with walking is also termed “Nordic Walking” referring to cross country skiing. It is common to see backpackers using them. The values are many and the investment is worth it. Using poles involves the upper body and arms while walking that increases calorie expenditure and offers more of a whole body workout. It enables a taller posture which improves breathing capacity allowing the lungs to have more expansion room. It decreases joint stress on the knees, hips and lower back which enables new exercisers to start a walking program and others to walk longer with less pain. It decreases effort and increases your balance climbing and
November 5, 2013 descending hills. Best of all, you are working with less perceived effort, meaning your body is doing more work but it doesn’t seem like that to your brain. This is beneficial for folks with arthritis, fibromyalgia and other ailments that may inhibit them from exercising. It helped my kids hike without falling as it offered balance on rocky terrain and they walked with less perceived physical effort. Trekking poles also improve your confidence while walking. Lack of confidence in walking is a risk factor for falls among seniors that leads to an increase in falls, increase in hip fractures and subsequently a sedentary lifestyle. One of my clients who has a history of polio started using the poles a year ago to help with walking and balance. She informed me that her walking is so much better now- even when she is not using the poles. What occurred was a carryover from her training into function so she now has more confidence and strength to pick up her legs when she walks without the poles. Trekking poles are available at
