thepublishers Peyton used to love french toast. Not anymore. It must be Madeline toast. Madeline the cartoon was inspired by a series of childrens’ books about a little girl living in a Catholic boarding school in Paris. Peyton’s life is nothing like that, which is perhaps why the series intrigues her. So Madeline toast it is. We tried a similar strategy the other morning when I prepared a Spanish tortilla, which is a giant omelette cooked top and bottom in a skillet. “Yummy! Want some egg pizza?” Her skeptic glance answered my question. “No, mummy. I don’t want it.” “How about some Madeline toast?” “Mummy, I don’t want Madeline toast. I want corn bread!” That sentence alone is proof that Tommy is her father. So there she is, munching on corn bread (plain), as Adam enjoys a burger (with mustard). For these precious moments, the kids aren’t squabbling over whose chair they are sitting in or who was served first. After a while, they go outside and run around the crunchy leaves as kids

– even Madeline – are known to do. Peyton fell asleep on our bed that evening as we watched a Robert Reich documentary (Robert, you are no Madeline). Crumbs of corn bread in her hair, this little girl won’t always be this little. And our hearts swell. On this very night, a mother and father’s hearts are shattered after receiving a phone call telling them searchers may have found the body of their missing daughter. Madeline toast and egg pizza moments. Zip up your fleece, it’s cold outside. Corn bread crumbs in a little girl’s hair. The lump in my throat. Adam is quietly drawing a pencil sketch of a Minion for her sister. This one has curly hair, like Madeline. Give thanks. Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Introspection meets Togetherness Last month walking even the back streets of Paris, I found my beloved city more crowded than ever, perhaps the good weather drew people out. Introvert and seeker of quiet that I am, I was happy to return to the peace of Nelson County, and beyond happy to feel autumn’s full prescence. The month of November—sandwiched between October’s breathtaking colour and clarity and December’s magical Light—is for me a much loved month. There’s Thanksgiving, the day that not only tries to defy the kitschy materialism of other holidays, but also celebrates the ritual of food and family, as well as gratitude, all with a beautiful and blatant absence of commercial excess. Wonderful, crazy (however you view it) Thanksgiving togetherness notwithstanding, November has an introspective quality, accentuated by shortening days, gateway to approaching winter. It’s a time to turn inward. “All I did was ate… and hibernate,” is how a friend of mine put it last winter. And while November definitely feels like a return-to-red month

(we’re talking wine not politics) this fall finds whites pairing most brilliantly. I’m forever looking for that superlative wine that can pair with all of Thanksgiving’s trimmings. (If this wine were in high school it would be the Homecoming Queen who is also on the debate team and plays a good game of basket ball and tennis.) Now I think I’ve found not one but two who are up to the daunting task of pleasing everyone. Evolúció Furmint 2013 – Furmint is the grape varietal, the same grape that makes the famous Tokaj dessert wine for which Hungary is renowned and, together with Bull’s Blood, often seems to be the only thing people remember of Hungarian wine. The name Furmint is taken from the French word “froment” for the wheat-gold colour of the wine it produces. With luscious fruit (look for aromas of lime blossom, green apples and apricots) enhanced by balanced acidity, this is a wine that will pair with turkey, sweet potatoes and even your great grandmother’s gravy. The palate is slightly off-dry with the distinct flavour of pear, peach and citrus. Simply a stun-

ning wine with a variety of food. And the name, Evolúció? I did turn the bottle over after first writing my notes to see if there were any tasting notes, and if so, did they match my own. What I saw was a little picture of a heart over a dollar sign and the words, “love over money.” Well, if that’s the evolution, I’ll raise a glass. $12 Steininger Grüner Veltliner 2013 – This Austrian wine wins our favourite white of the year award. It’s elegant enough to sit up to the table with your Main Line relatives and the ’78 Burgundy, but it’ll also hold its own with the beer during the football game. Perfectly balanced and like the Evolúció has beautiful nuanced fruit. Notes of white pepper, citrus and nutmeg. Grüner is the grape that famously pairs with the unpairable: artichoke and asparagus. But as food wine par excellence, the Steininger will go with much more than outcasts—from the green beans and root veggies, to turkey and the sweet, gentle laughter settling over both ends of the table as the second, then third bottles are opened. $15 Happy Thanksgiving and great gratitude to all.

Ginger Gold and Shem Mountain Boy are not quite 100% pets, but they’re not quite 100% working dogs either. “I’d say they’re pets that enjoy themselves working,” said their owner-slash-boss Tim Castillo, who is also the president and founder of PriestView Hunting Preserve in Piney River. Tim, along with Ginger and Shem, are working with 10-month-old Pippin and 3-month-old Gala to train them as bird dogs as well, and they’re starting to get there. Well, Pippin is. “The little puppy is still just terrorizing,” said Tim. Tim grew up hunting, especially birds, and what he likes best about the hunt is working with the dogs - his are all Brittany Spaniels named after different varieties of apples - which is why he thought to open the 460 acre hunting preserve that features guided experiences hunting quail, chukar, and pheasant. On a recent Saturday morning, Tim guided Bill McDonald of Wingina, along with father and son team Bob and Robby Mars of Louisa, on an upland quail hunt into Rolling Fields, located at the foot of Priest Mountain. Bill brought along Autumn, his Irish Setter; Albie, an English Setter, hunted with the Marrs.

“When [the dogs] get into the cone of scent the bird is putting out, they lock up on point and it just amazes you when you see it happen.”

“To me, it’s a very interesting world that I don’t experience, but [the dogs] do,” said Tim, adding that with uplands hunting (as opposed to shooting clay pigeons) there’s an added challenge, which he likes. Tim believes that hunting on a preserve with a bird dog is a much more enjoyable activity than shooting on a range, but it’s also good for the dogs. “With the way development hit across Virginia, the wild quail and grouse populations - and there’s never really been a pheasant population in Virginia - disappeared,” he said, which makes it difficult for those who have a bird dog to find a place for the dog to train. “The hunting preserve gives the dog an opportunity to do what it’s bred to do.”

NOVEMBER 2014

PriestView is a true family endeavor (it started when Tim’s son, Clark, graduated from Mary Washington and decided to turn what was weekend hobby into a business and also employs Tim’s wife, LaVerne, and their daughter, Ruth) but a few close friends are involved as well. In addition to the four guides who help lead private hunting tours, Tim has another friend who raises the birds that are released on the property before each hunt. Open only on weekend and holidays, PriestView can only entertain about four private hunting parties at a time, each containing up to four hunters. Atypical package includes hunting up to 10 quail, six chukar, and four pheasant (warmup skeet shoot and bird cleaning is included). A guide and dog will accompany the hunt for an extra fee. PriestView Hunting preserve has several different types of fields, that will vary based on the hunting party’s level of expertise as well as the dog they bring. “We match the hunter up with the right field,” said Tim. Tim has enjoyed hunting since he was a boy and even right on the PriestView property for a couple of decades now, but it wasn’t until four years ago that he and the family turned their hobby into a business. “We were doing it as a hobby and I would have various friends that I worked with come out, and I was able to share the experience with them and it has grown to be that way,” he said. “Now, I have a lot more friends because of it and a lot more people come out and enjoy wild game hunting and bird dogs.” But it’s hard to say whether the best part is the hunt or the Sunday dinner. “They’re very tasty and there are different recipes,” said Tim. “Some people enjoy them southern fried. Some people enjoy them in various recipes on the grill. One of my favorites is baking them with an orange glaze. I just like them. I like ‘em all ways.” BRL

KEEP YOUR BRILLIANT VIEWS

DON’T COVER THEM UP!

AVOID SUN DAMAGE!

We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that cause harm to your skin & eyes, not to mention destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They are made for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They eliminate 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. These new films are not dark, they don’t bubble or fade, & they will not distort your views. In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the white light in the sun just a little bit our 3M™ window tinting allows for more crisp high definition views compared to your current windows. 3M™ Window Films installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting come with a lifetime warranty. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

IT’S A WOMAN’S JOB

And her name is April Anderson.

When April Anderson moved 3,000 miles from Rockingham County to the Napa Valley, she never dreamed that she’d be moving back to Virginia - just an hour away from her hometown - as a sought after senior brewer 14 years later. “I moved out to northern California at 18 to go to college,” said April, who studied PR and journalism. “I was exposed to craft wine, food, and then shortly after, beer as well… and from there my passion for beer just kind of sparked and grew.” After working in the hospitality industry for a few years - enjoying the craft brewers her neighborhood had to offer - she took a risk and accepted a low-paying but ultimately future-determining position as a brewery assistant at a small brewpub called the Blue Frog Grog and Grills. “It was an interesting experience, for sure. Because it was so small (it was just the head brewer and myself) I was able to assist in every aspect of the brewing process - from fermenting to packaging,” said April. “I was able to really feed my passion and realize this was something I wanted to do.” From Blue Frog, April moved to a larger brewery (Moylans) and by that point, she thought she was a Californian for life. “California is saturated with craft beer,” she said. “My family had stopped asking when I was going to move back.” But when her sister got sick and she decided it was time to come home, Jason Oliver (Devils Backbone Brewing Company Brewmaster), who she’d met a few times before passed her information up the chain of command and April had a job offer less than two weeks later. She started working in April of 2012, just a few months after the DBBC Outpost opened in Lexington, which has grown in leaps and bounds in just a few short years. When she started, there were only two other brewers at the outpost and today there are 13. And she’s the only woman - but that’s not a big deal for April. “I feel like I’m a brewer first and embrace my femininity second,” she said, adding that women were the original brewers back in the day when brewing was considered a part of the housekeeping. These days she’s proud to say that Devils Backbone, and the entire brewing community, is attracting more and more women. “We have 5 women in our main office, 4 women in sales and marketing. There are women brewery owners and founders, hops growers… it’s really exciting to see that women are really coming into a place where they feel that they belong,” she said, adding that she’s always been accepted by the men in her industry and just wants to be recognized for her good brews. “Just because I have a pair of tatas doesn’t mean it sets me apart.” BRL

2014 third quarter residential real estate summary

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

As reported in the mid year market report, I have been looking for a rebound in sales out of Q3 and Q4, since both are historically stronger quarters for sales. Q3 did have an uptick in sales. However, year to date sales in 2014 remain sluggish compared to the same time period in 2013. Unless we end the year with a bang, 2014 sales will not catch up to the growth experienced in 2013. Here is a quick market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Q1-Q3 Countywide Overview; 139 residential properties sold in Q1Q3 of 2014 which represents a 20% decrease from the same time period in 2013 when 173 properties sold. Q1-Q3 Statistical Comparisons; Q1-Q3 2013 recap: median $242,000, average price $264,232, Average price per sq ft 139.49, Days

on Market (DOM) 198. Q1-Q3 2014: median $231,000, average price $280,492, Average price per sq ft 142.52, Days on Market (DOM) 146. The 2014 market has shown a reduction in the number of properties sold and in the median sales price. While fewer properties have sold, there have been more high-end properties to close; 19 properties have sold above 500k compared to only 12 in the same time period last year. Several of these have been residential properties with large acreages, which creates a higher selling price per sq ft. Hence, the average price and average price per sq ft reflects a slight increase, even though the median is lower. While the number of sales and the median price have dropped, the silver lining is that properly priced properties are selling more quickly; days on market (DOM) of sold properties has decrease by 26%. Setting a market driven asking price is more important

Marlo Allen

than ever because fewer properties are selling keeping inventory high, thus forcing sellers to be more competitive on price. There are currently 375 properties for sale at an average price per sq ft of 165.38 compared to this time last year with 338 properties for sale with an average price per sq ft of $175.72. Q1-Q3 Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 65 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 13 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 61 sales. When comparing Q1-Q3 2014 sales with Q1-Q3 2013 sales, all 3 markets declined; Stoney Creek realized the most significant reduction with 46% fewer sales. Wintergreen sales fell 18% and the county/ non-resort sales dropped by 13%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 65 properties sold representing 23 detached homes and

Besides Wintergreen, the county locality with the most sales is Afton with 13 sales representing 21% of the county/non-resort sales. Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; Q3 with 54 sales was the strongest quarter followed by Q2 with 46 sales and Q1 with 39 sales. The strongest month for Q1-Q3 was September with 25 sales followed by July with 20 sales. The slowest month was August with only 9 sales.

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

As they slide into their third year of operation on Nov. 11, Wild Wolf Brewing Company has come to be known for a lot of things: great beer, great food, great place to hang out. But now people are starting to take note of one more thing - they’ve got chickens running around the hops field. “This is our second harvest year with the hop yard and Danny came up with the concept of getting the chickens because they help us grow the hops organically by eating the bugs and the little weeds and they also fertilize,” said Mary Wolf, Danny’s mom and business partner. “They’re really just becoming a part of our culture.” In an effort to make the brewpub more environmentally focused, Danny and the team started growing their own hops and then put in some raised beds to grow veggies for the restaurant. This year - in just two 90-square-foot beds, they’ve grown carrots, broccoli, squash, okra (remember all that delicious fried okra this summer?), spinach and salad greens, radishes, and “a really nice pile of green peppers.” The Wolfs are working to get FDA licensing to sell the chicken eggs in the restaurant (right now Danny eats them at home) and maybe even one day serve meat raised on the property, but in the meantime the hens are earning their keep in the hop yard. continued on page 26

This chicken won’t be crossing the road as its home is in a hop yard. In addition to feeding on weeds and bugs, the chickens feast on kitchen scraps. Next season will mark Wild Wolf’s third hop harvest.

“We were looking at getting a lot of compost and other litters and manures to put on the hop yard and it was going to be significantly expensive to purchase and then to spread year after year after year,” said Danny. “I was already interested in bringing in some kind of animal and after some research, I found some hop yards in Europe and New Zealand that use chickens. It was a different approach.” This year Danny’s got 16 chickens in the yard and 24 baby chicks at home, waiting to be big enough to head out to join the flock.

With more chickens in the soon-to-be-modified chicken yard, there will be more manure to fertilize the three existing raised beds, plus the five new pear trees Danny planted this fall and the additional raised beds and herb gardens he already has planned for the spring. And in addition to helping fertilize the gardens, the hens also help out with the composting. “Basically I have a composter out back and I get a bucket from the kitchen and if there’s a pile of good looking chicken food on top, like shredded cabbage, I’ll take it out there for them,” said Danny.

Standing outside of Burgerweeshuis, a club in Deventer, Netherlands after playing a set with the Hackensaw Boys, I met the Cannonball Johnsons. A band of twenty-somethings, they opened for us, playing some Hackensaw songs with our blessing. And they did a damned good job, too. I forget the context of our conversation, but one of the Dutchmen joked, “We have culture over here.” I shot back under my breath, “Fitting then, that you copy our music.” We laughed, understanding that facetiousness, like music, is a universal language. Road tripping Northern Europe for about a month through Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium, the Hackensaw Boys had an amazing adventure in Europe’s diverse cultures. We watched the sunset over cliffs along the Celtic Sea before gorging on black pudding, which consists of pork blood and oats, in Clonakilty, Ireland. In Switzerland, we were properly “Züriched,” as guitarist David Sickmen coined, with a French-German-Italian dinner and endless wine as a band of Roma buskers humbled our musicianship along the Sihl River. Django would have been proud of their virtuosity playing hot club jazz, and having attempted “gypsy” jazz at Rapunzel’s back home, I was excited to hear an authentic approach. Throughout the tour, I was in awe that our homespun mountain music from Appalachia resonated from Amsterdam to the Alps. I watched from 20 stages as fans partied down, dancing, cheering, and singing lyrics in a foreign language. Musically, the tour had many highlights. We played a live BBC Radio show in Northern Ireland before heading south to play De Barra’s in Clonakilty, Ireland. The folk club was made famous in part by Noel Redding, Jimi Hendrix’s bassist who often performed there. Our tour manager and mandolinist, Thomas Oliver, helped the Hackensaws by recording and mixing demo takes for our upcoming album in his Amsterdam studio, Ijland (Island), a former Nazi SS quarantine. For me the climax of our adventure was playing the Paradiso Theater in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most esteemed venues. Stars from the Rolling Stones to Nirvana and everyone in between have graced the Paradiso’s stage. As we prepared for a sold-out show, a band mate pulled me aside nervously and advised, “Remember, play a solid down beat, and if you have a false start, wait for the melody to cycle back around before you jump in. Now go have fun.” I took a deep breath to play the biggest show of my life so far, and I’d say we rocked it. As we left the venue, high on adrenaline and the energy of a

great audience, he laughed, “Not everyone gets to start at the top.” This was both a congratulations and a reminder that the Hackensaw Boys have been working hard for 15 years to establish a following in the United States and Europe. As “the kid,” I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I am getting an incredible music and performance education from my fellow musicians and travelers. The band’s lineup includes David Sickmen on vocals and hard driving acoustic guitar. Jimmy Stelling rolls as a banjo madman and vocalist. Ferd Moyse takes the high lonesome sound to a new level as a singer, and he’s a hell of a fiddler. Brian Gorby sings and plays the “charismo,” a percussion device of hubcaps, cans, and anything else he can find. I play the double bass. The energy level of the Boys is something to experience, and they can drive crowds into a frenzy. Back in the states we will miss Thomas’ mandolin chop, but we will meet with him again for another European tour in the spring. Until then, we have an exciting schedule stateside. Since I began touring with the band, they have raised nearly $27,000 to record an album at Levon Helm Studio in Woodstock, New York. Many thanks to those who donated to our Kickstarter campaign. We will record in November, and the album will release in next year. The 2014 tour will conclude by December, so don’t miss us at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville on November 26. After that we’ll have a winter break before a busy year of touring in 2015. BRL NOVEMBER 2014

Between the Outpost and the Basecamp, DBBC was able to enter 10 beers into consideration at the premier U.S. beer festival and competition in Denver last month. The Outpost in Lexington brought home a Gold for Schwartz Bier and two silvers for Turbo Cougar and Old Virginia Dark and the Basecamp in

Roseland brought home a bronze for Alt Bier. “We’re kind of blown away by the fact that we’re this little brewery in Virginia and we’ve won three national titles in three years,” said DBBC Owner and Founder Steve Crandall, adding that last year DBBC was named Small Brewery of the Year and the year before held the Small Brewpub of the Year title. “It’s not something we want to crow about, but it’s hard not to be excited about it. MARGARET MAKES IT HAPPEN At the age of 80 Margaret Morton is still helping people move away from dependency to self-sufficiency. Margaret Morton comes from a family of farmers and sawyers in Louisville, Georgia. Born at the height of the Great Depression, she learned the value of hard work by picking cotton and stacking peanut plants. But she also took her schooling seriously, urged on by parents and grandparents who valued education. “My grandfather read four newspapers a day. My parents insisted I read newspapers too. I still read the paper every day,” she says. She studied at a business college in Philadelphia to be an office worker and eventually took a job at a company making baby clothes. She met, and in 1955 married, Robert Morton, a professional meat cutter who had grown up in Buckingham County, Virginia. They moved back there and had two children before Robert died in 1982. In 1971 a friend of her husband asked her to apply for a job for the Central Virginia Community Action Agency. The mission of community action agencies is to improve the lives of low-income people by helping them to become self-reliant, something right up Margaret Morton’s alley. She formed personal bonds with people who needed to learn good work habits. “I would tell people they needed to find a job, be on time, be reliable, do extra things to promote themselves, to prove to the boss they were good workers who benefitted the company.” While in Buckingham she helped start the Central Virginia Community Health Center, an experience that came in handy when, having transferred to the Monticello Community Action Agency and its rural outreach program in Nelson County in 1984, she joined a small community-based group to start the Blue Ridge Medical Center. She served on the BRMC board for many years. She helped found the Nelson County Community Development Foundation, which builds

affordable housing for low- and moderate-income working people, and continues to serve on that board. She is on the Nelson County Advisory Committee of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and served two terms on the Amherst County School Board and for 12 years on the Amherst Social Services Board. She sees herself as an educator, but also as an enabler, helping people find jobs, trying to help clients wean themselves off dependency on government programs like Food Stamps, or at least to use their allocation wisely. She urges her clients to take responsibility for their own lives and their children’s lives, sometimes by getting a General Education Diploma if they were high school dropouts, sometimes by pointing out to parents the need to read to their children and have books in their home. She partnered for many years with the late Cecilia Epps of the Jefferson Area Board for the Aging, making hundreds of home visits and finding help for elderly people to pay their utility bills and heat their homes. What many of her colleagues and friends say about her is that she can be very blunt, telling people honestly what she thinks. “If I disagree with you, I’m going to respect your opinion, but I want you to respect mine,” she says pointedly. She has crossed swords with many an administrator or fellow board member, but more often than not she wins their admiration. Says a co-worker and friend Georgia Brown, “She’s going to get to the bottom of why you need help and is very honest about it, but then she will help you all she can. She is the friend you always wanted, a teacher and a social worker who always makes a difference. She’s mentor and a great person to be around.” BRL

Stone Wall Detail Once you have made a commitment to add a stone wall to your landscape, there are many options to consider. Not only will you gain utilitarian benefits from your investment (if soil retention is the primary purpose), street appeal and overall landscape impact will ultimately reward the homeowner as first impressions quickly evolve from a pre-wall ‘hum’ to a post-wall ‘WOW!’ – a noteworthy and lucrative exclamation when the impression is on a potential home buyer. As they say, ‘the devil is in the detail’ and the details are what will sell you and others on your stone investment. The relationship between the wall and the column that often escorts the wall is as important as the material considered for the construction. If the wall is too small in width to the column, the wall is overwhelmed. If the wall is too large, the column looks fragile and weak. I like a 16 inch wall and the reason mainly has to do with perception – more than 16 inches is too stout and less than 16 appears pencil thin. Therefore once I gravitated towards the 16 inch wall, my columns naturally moved to 1624 inch structures. Visually for me, the column could not exceed 50% the width of the wall. So if your wall is 16 inches, your maximum column size is 24 inches square. The top of the wall has a handful of options as well – mostly how the wall is terminated at the top or cap of the wall. Walls that are going to be used for sitting, as you would find around a patio, a fire pit or chimney, typically sit more comfortably with a flatter, longer piece of stone on them as compared to the lumpy and rugged ‘building stone’ (used to construct vertical elements) that most walls are constructed of. Options for capping walls are completely about personal preference. Typically my knee jerk reaction is to couple a variegated

bluestone (flagstone) cap with your typically tan, gray and brown building stone since their colors compliment each other. Soapstone, which has the advantage of being native to Nelson County, offers a strong blue color and texture that are unique. Our soapstone uses are mainly in column caps flanking both brick and ‘building stone’ walls. Walls that are not going to be used for sitting can be capped with the same building stone that was used to construct the wall or a complimentary colored stone. The size of the cap in relation to the size of the wall is also a design element. Having the building stone that was used in the construction simply remain the same breadth as the wall is one technique that is often employed. However, if a different substrate is used, like bluestone, soapstone or another building stone, it is important to add breadth to the wall to both accentuate the change as well as conceal the last joint of concrete connecting the cap from the wall. Typically we increase the size of the cap from the wall or column by a minimum of two inches on each side. So if a wall is 16 inches and it is flanked by a column that is 20 inches, the respective caps are 20 and 24 inches. It should also be noted that all columns typically are capped with stone that not only increases in width by 2 inches but also increases in thickness by 2 inches. Wall heights on the upper side of the structure are typically 18 inches from soil to cap since that measurement is around sitting height. Adding lighting to columns and scuppers to walls (or holes in the wall for allowing surface draining) are additional features that continue to add value and interest to your project. Additionally, how the wall climbs or descends slopes (using step-downs, falling with the grade, etc.) continues the discussion that the devil really is in the detail.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine

Dear Dr. Cole, I have heard that I should have a CT to screen for lung cancer because I smoke. Why is that? Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US and 90% of people with lung cancer die from it. Most people with lung cancer are not diagnosed until they have symptoms and there have been no good screening tests that find the disease early enough to make a difference. But recent studies have found that yearly chest CT scans in high risk people can find lung cancer before they have symptoms and allow for early treatment and possible cure of the cancer. About 85% of lung cancers in the US are due to smoking tobacco. Current recommendations are that current or former smokers age 55 to 80 years old who have at least a 30 pack-year history (1 pack a day for 30 years or 2 packs per day for 15 years) be screened with yearly low dose CT scans. Once a person have quit for 15 years the screening can be stopped.

If a lung nodule is found on your screening CT scan then follow up is needed. There are established protocols for deciding what needs to be done next. If you do not have any nodules it does not mean you can keep smoking. The most important thing that you can do to reduce your risk of getting lung cancer is stop smoking. The total amount that you smoke in your lifetime and your age are the biggest risk factors for developing lung cancer. You can’t do anything about your age, but you can do something about your smoking! If you are between 55 and 80 years old and currently smoke or previously smoked in the last 15 years, talk to your doctor about lung cancer screening. And if you still smoke talk to your doctor about ways that can help you stop. If you do not smoke – don’t start! Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Starting Over After Illness Pneumonia was not in my plans this year but I got it and wished I could give it away. The first week was fever, chills, body ache, headache, coughing, weakness and fatigue. I could not get out of bed. I began to function barely in week two and by week three, some energy started to return. Needless to say, I missed three weeks of exercise. Quite frustrating because I was in good running groove increasing distances and feeling well. Now, I was at zero miles running. Starting over. Again. Humbling. This “starting over” event occurs often throughout our lives in varying forms. Many clients experience this phenomena frequently. Exercise programs start and stop, start and stop. Life gets in the way of taking care of ourselves. Travel, work, family, caring for loved ones, a move. It is important to note how stress exhibits itself in physical ailments. When returning to your exercise program after an illness or absence, ease into it. Try restorative Yoga for short sessions. The breathing techniques are

very beneficial. For week one, exercise for half the duration that you normally exercised. Increase duration by 10% each week depending on how you feel. For runners, start with the walk/jog pattern for the first two weeks. Cyclists and swimmers should keep the workout heart rate at 50-60% of maximum heart- a submax workout. Use half the weights and decrease the repetitions for resistive work. Make the first 4-6 workouts easy. Try 20 minute sessions the first week and add ten minutes for resistive exercise the second week. When you return to exercise classes, do not feel pressured to perform at your previous level for two to three weeks. Keep the first 4-6 classes shorter with less intensity until you feel 100%. Another key factor to returning to exercise after illness is adequate rest. Caffeine stimulants may help you press through the day but that often affects your sleep cycle. A good night’s sleep helps the body heal and recover. And you may be returning to work and
