thepublishers Sometimes you have to go on a road trip with the kids halfway across the country. And if you want to remain married, you stop at the halfway point for the night. Peyton’s version of “Are we there yet?” is “How many sleeps until we get there?” “Just one night,” I told her as I started scanning my phone for a place to crash outside of Lexington, Kentucky. But every place I called was booked. Something about a bluegrass festival. I forgot we were in Kentucky. We finally found a place several miles outside of Lexington and as we loaded our things into the room – Adam, careful with that luggage cart, please. – we piled back into the truck to find a place to eat. You can’t really call us a football family. We walked into America’s Fern Bar and several screens had the game on with people hootin’ it up. “That’s very loud,” Peyton said to me, looking up from her crayons and kids’ menu. I was scanning my phone for the number to the nearest liquor store. “We close at midnight, ma’am.” the voice said through the phone. Kentucky’s all right. Setting the Styrofoam to-go- box

on the floorboard (because stale chicken fingers might be breakfast?) I hopped out of the truck and into a time warp. “Any particular bourbon you’re looking for ma’am?” the man said as I looked at half empty shelves. My brand was sold-out so I grabbed a fifth of Plan B and Plan C. As I walked up to pay, a Kentucky gentleman put down a cup he had been sipping from, stuffed a bottle in a paper sack, and handed it to the car stopped at the side window. So the other Kentucky gentleman put his cup down and rang me up, shaving the last three pennies of the total because no one should dig around for three pennies or break a bill on a Friday night in Kentucky. He knew mama needed a sleep. Happy Thanksgiving! Yvette and Tommy Stafford NOVEMBER 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

The Best Wines When we have passed a certain age, the soul of the child we once were and the soul of the dead from whom we have sprung, come to lavish on us their riches and their spells. – Proust Titling a column, “the best” something-or-other is a nice little marketing trick. It grabs attentions faster than anything else… except perhaps: “the amazing diet secret of Angelina Jolie.” There will always be those who want the best, perhaps not realizing that the best is never what we buy in life, but what we bring to it instead. There come moments in life when we realize we’re experiencing the best, and it’s that which we share with others. The best is when we’re surrounded by family, or by people we love, and it doesn’t matter that the wine on the table costs $9.99. But if we’re to insist on the best, one secret is to drink the wine of the region. In the southwest of France, you might opt for the rustic bottle of Gaillac that so well compliments that region’s lard-laden specialties like cassoulet. Regional food

and wine have evolved to work well together and have remained married for a reason. Here in the Rockfish and Shenandoah valleys, we’re graced with some of the oldest mountains on earth, creating one of the most unique terroirs with ancient layers of strata that yield excellent wine. I think we reach moments when we realize the best is all about being the best we can (doesn’t it always gets back to loving?) rather than having the best (even when we can afford it). Simpler still, the best wines are those you like best. Or the one over which you decided to raise money for a charity or give to a friend in need. Or maybe the wine that allowed you to relax and listen to a parent or grandparent’s story of the past; there will come a time when you can no longer. Our relationship with wine, no different from life, is about what our hearts are saying and not some blogger’s points or scores. Maybe the best “us” is somewhere between child’s wise wonder and the very olds’ wonder-filled wisdom. This Thanksgiving, give thanks if you have people you love. Pop that

cork and tell them just how much. Loving Cup Red, 2013 (organic) – Viniculture in Virginia is hard to do organically. Enter stage left: Loving Cup, one of the first organic wineries in our state. Deena and Karl of Loving cup are also great friends to the animals, donating a portion of proceeds to the Nelson County SPCA. This is a soft, medium red with notes of black cherry and plum, and a nice compliment to your Polyface turkey and all the fixins. $18.99 Veritas, Cabernet France, 2014 – While 2015 proved a great vintage for Virginia, despite the crazy rain at harvest’s end, other vintages have been more difficult to say the least. But then there will always be vintners whose wines sell out no matter how trying a year. Enter stage right: Andrew, Patricia, Emily and the crew at Veritas, whose touch turn grapes into gold… or great wine anyway. This Cabernet Franc is delightfully fruity with aromas of cranberry, and another good choice for your Thanksgiving Day fare. $24.99 April in Paris! For info: Kay@ kaypfaltz.com.

LIGHT OF DAY Some animals never see it. Charles and Anna Long are farmers raising turkeys that do.

NOVEMBER 2015

Blue Ridge LIFE

The drive down Virginia’s Hwy 252 is scenic and serene. The road to Middlebrook (cutting southward through middle Augusta County) winds upward through increasingly sloping hills alongside mountain streams, passing through quaint little hamlets with names reminiscent of long forgotten mills huddled in about the unmarked highway so close you cannot help but imagine the clomp of horses’ hooves, the hard-packed ruts of a busy wagon trail, the old brick taverns and big wraparound porches bustling with foot-traffic. As with so many areas of rural Appalachia, the 19th century remains a presence — its pastoral vestige remains not stamped out by the technological progression of the modern era. Traveling up the steep gravel driveway of Charles and Anna Long’s, Long Roots Farm, emerging from a stand of dense hardwoods, the view is breathtaking. The couple’s large, modern log cabin — the only manmade structure in sight — sits regally atop a hillside (there are many of them), its big porch and high windows looking out over Long Roots’ 100 acres of bountifully rolling farmland, which itself abuts and bleeds into miles of hardwood-speckled valleys and crests, all of it bowled in by the gently looming Blue Ridge.

12

Blue Ridge LIFE

NOVEMBER 2015

The first and obvious question to sort of venerably and flabbergastedly stammer at the couple is: How on earth did the couple come by this sliver of bucolic heaven? “A little over a year ago now we posted an ad on Craigslist,” shrugs Charles, running a palm over his closely cropped hair and gazing around like a man in awe of his own good fortune. “We posted that we were wanting land to farm and within the first few hours got a response. When we came out and looked at the place, we fell in love.” But this is the short answer, the latest installment in a slightly more complicated saga that runs something as follows: Charles Long was raised by the son of none other than the founder of Virginia’s first — and eventually most major — mass-commercialized turkey operation, Jim Long. After raising turkeys for years free-range on various plots of land he owned and leased in the Meadowview area, realizing that he could trick Old Man Winter and predators via constructing heated houses, in 1942 Long made the pioneering leap to raising his birds indoors. The venture was enormously successful, ushering in what amounted to an agricultural revolution. “My grandfather was a true pioneer,” says Long. “He was one of the first farmers to start raising birds indoors and that fact, combined with his business savvy, led to his controlling a strong portion of the east coast market.” continued on page 14

continued from page 13

By the early 1960s, Long had incorporated his turkey farming business under the name Franwood Farms, and, with the savvy of an innovator bent on monopolization, purchased subsidiary companies — like a truck dealership to cut Franwood’s transportation costs, a construction company to help lessen the expense of its expansion, a butchery to process the meat, and a packing plant to, well, pack it — thereby controlling economic gaps that other farmers accepted as being simply the cost of doing business. Franwood grew swiftly, and made its mark shipping poultry to major metropolitan hubs — like Washington, D.C. and New York City — throughout the eastern seaboard. As the scion of what was at once a family farm and corporate agricultural behemoth, Charles Long spent his youth and early career steeped in this profit-driven, corporate environment. Then, two years ago, in 2013, he decided to make a change. “I wasn’t happy doing what I was doing,” says Long. “That method of farming seemed detached from the natural world, and, after seeing the success of the whole slow-foods movement —” as embodied on the front-end by Joel Salatin, or expressed on the back by Barbara Kingsolver’s best-selling farm-memoir, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle —“I thought I’d like to take my expertise and put it to use raising animals in a different way.” Different indeed. Strolling through the pastures with the couple’s adopted Great Pyrenees, Chance, huffing and bounding alongside, the

remarkable thing about the Long Roots operation is its commitment to a policy of free-range authenticity. Whether it be turkeys, chickens, ducks, sheep, cows, or Lucy, the sheep-herding donkey, they are all allotted ample time to roam. “We fence in the small animals at night to keep out coyotes and predators,” says Long. “And we don’t clip the wings of our birds.” When Long opens the gate of the solar-powered electric enclosure housing around 50 turkeys, this last point is quickly proven. The young male birds disperse in a flock, go pecking and strutting about the pasture, stretching their wings and taking brief flights. Contrary to what you’d think, they don’t flee or wander too far. In fact, within minutes they’re back at the enclosure, gathered about the Longs, curiously cocking their heads. “It’s a happier method of farming,” says Long. “I know I feel happier, and I can tell you from experience, these animals are much happier than the ones I worked with that were cooped up inside and never saw the light of day.” When asked about what his grandfather thinks of all this, Long tells the story of the 95-year-old’s visit to the farm. “He gazed around and sort of smirked and scratched his head,” says Long. “He said it was like he’d gone back in time. He felt it was amazing there was a market for this kind of thing, and encouraged us to grow our operation.” BRL

NOVEMBER 2015

What do you get when you add red Solo cups, plastic ketchup bottles, cans of paint, and a boring day at the Wintergreen True Value Store in Nellysford? A poor man’s stained glass window, according to storeowner Danny Watson. “I just got this idea. Let’s do some kind of Jackson Pollock drip painting.” He and his 13-year-old daughter, Noel, filled the cups with every color of paint imaginable and with a paintbrush, (or syringe, or old condiment bottle) got busy dripping or squirting different hues onto a square-shaped piece of glass about the size of a text book. With a second piece of glass, they pressed down. Danny calls the technique “paint scuzzing.” If you’re wondering if you read that right, you did. It’s the redneck’s version of paint squeezed between glass, Danny said. “From there you have a made piece that has two different sides to it. The first piece of glass where you dropped the paint on looks completely different from the top piece where you press it down. You actually end up with two very different contrasting sides,” Danny explained during one recent paint scuzzing session.

And if this is redneck stain glass, then the hardware store is the church. And the altar is the big worktable in the back, past the aisles of nails, light bulbs and power tools. The congregation is Noel, Danny’s ten-year-old son Max, and some of their friends. And instead of meeting on Sunday, these worshippers meet Friday and Saturday afternoons. As the kids continue to create, their techniques have evolved. Instead of using a paintbrush to drip the paint, they use syringes or ketchup bottles to squirt it more precisely. Noel experiments by laying masking tape down on the glass before dripping her red and blue paint. When she pulls up the tape, an intricate design appears. For Max, it’s all about using as many colors as possible. “I like to mix them all together,” he said. The only downside? “The paint gets on your hands and it’s hard to get off.” Danny cuts glass to use for the pressing part of the process and he has experimented with shapes and sizes. “Every Friday the technique evolves a little bit more and we come out with something a little bit different and unique,” Danny said.

Danny, a stonemason by trade with a self-described artistic flair, collected dozens of wrenches and mended them together to make the shape of a man. Noel prefers sculptures and with pieces of scrap metal she found around the store, she created a toy car. “That’s the fun thing about the hardware store,” Danny said. “There’s all kinds of fun stuff to do in here.” BRL

CELADON SORGHUM Green Acres is the place to be. But not like forest green. More like a grey-green. “We don’t have to climb the telephone pole to talk on the phone, but we do have to take our cell phones to special areas to be able to use them,” laughs Abby Rice, describing the farm (Celadon Acres) she owns and operates with her husband, Tom Lauderman. Celadon is a willow-green color often found in pottery. “And our next project will be to get our [pottery] studio up and running.” But for the time being, Abby and Tom — who both still work in computer-related jobs at UVa — have their hands full of sorghum. The couple started growing the grain (used to make a syrupy sweetening agent somewhere akin to molasses, but not quite) seven years ago while they were still living in Charlottesville proper when Tom got curious about it after a trip to the Clifford Ruritan Club’s annual Sorghum Festival. But it wasn’t until they headed out to Lovingston that they started growing almost an entire acre of the stuff, built a sugar house for turning the crop into syrup, and turn out 10-20 gallons of sweetener each year. continued on page 26

Back in the day, this century-old cane mill would have been powered by horses. At Celadon Acres, Tom Lauderman has hooked it up to a small gas engine, repurposing parts from a lawn tractor.

NOVEMBER 2015

continued from page 25

Tom’s fascination with the crop grew as he discovered its history in Virginia. Sorghum, which originates from Africa, is a hardy plant that requires little pest control and is very tolerant to Virginia’s weather. And while plantations were growing the far more fickle sugar cane, poorer folks used sorghum to sweeten their coffee and cakes.

“I think a lot of grandpas used to have the mill and the cooker pans,” said Abby. “It was more of a grassroots kind of thing all over the southeast in the early 20th century. It phased out as sugar became more affordable, but we’ve picked it back up and are trying to go back to the grassroots kind of lifestyle.” They’ve even resorted to using a 100-yearold cane mill for harvest — one that originally required two horses and two farmers to operate. Seeing as how Tom and Abby don’t have horses (and electricity has been invented), they had to figure out a way to get it to work sans livestock. “It’s got a little gas engine that’s the most modern part of it and there’s a pulley off the gas engine,” said Tom, who hobbled together parts from an old lawn tractor, a post hole digger and a century old sorghum mill to create the perfect solution. “It’s a lot of cast iron and it turns pretty slow, but the cane comes out flat — we’re talking Coyote and Road Runner.” Despite the old technology and the old-world crop, what’s old is new again. The New York Times has run a few articles on sorghum’s culinary uses and several upscale restaurants, including the Dabney in Washington, D.C. have come knocking for sorghum at Celadon Acres. “Some of the foodie people in big cities have discovered sorghum because it’s a more mild flavor than molasses,” said Tom, who happens to like molasses thankyouverymuch, adding that some of those foodies have even asked for the raw juice, which is not usually used in cooking due to it’s starchy texture and grassy taste. “We’re hoping that in the next couple of years, some of these folks will develop some really good recipes. Long term, we’ll work with building relationships with some of them. For them, there are no boundaries. They’re a fun bunch.” BRL

Rebounding Sales

athome

2015 Third Quarter Residential Real Estate Summary for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

A rebound in sales was anticipated since the last two quarters are historically stronger than the first two. Q3 did have an uptick in sales. In fact, Q3 sales increased by 8.6% over the previous quarter (Q2 2015). However, price and length of time on market did not improve. The positive momentum in sales may lead to a gain in year end sales, but it is looking less optimistic that price will rebound enough to end the year on a positive note. Here is a quick market summary for Nelson County. (Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS)). Q1-Q3 Countywide Overview; 172 residential properties sold in Q1Q3 of 2015 which represents a 23% increase from the same time period in 2014 when 140 properties sold. Q1-Q3 Statistical Comparisons; Q1-Q3 2014 recap: 140 sales, median $237,000, average price $282,502, average price per sq ft 143.24, Days

on Market (DOM) 154. Q1-Q3 2015: 172 sales, median $197,950, average price $244,150, Average price per sq ft 134.12, Days on Market (DOM) 193. The 2015 market has shown an increase in the number of properties sold, but a reduction in price and a longer time on market. While more properties are selling, the drop across all price categories indicates that purchases are being made on price and/or value. In Q1-Q3 2015 there were more sales at or below 100k (42 in Q1-Q3 2015 compared to 23 in Q1-Q3 2014) and fewer sales above 500k (only 14 in Q1-Q3 2015 compared to 19 in Q1-Q3 2014). Current market conditions indicate that property should be priced appropriately at the time of listing. 88% of the Q1-Q3 2015 sales that incurred more than 365 days on market, were reduced at least once, if not multiple times, before selling. Inventory has dwindled some, but not enough for sellers to discount the fact that there

Marlo Allen

remains a lot of competition. There are currently 342 residential properties for sale at an average price per sq ft of 161.73 compared to this time last year with 375 properties for sale with an average price per sq ft of $165.38. Until inventory is significantly reduced, sellers have to attractively price their property to entice a buyer to move forward with their property instead of the competition. Q1-Q3 Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 86 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 14 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 72 sales. When comparing Q1-Q3 2015 sales with Q1-Q3 2014 sales, all 3 markets experienced growth in sales volume. Wintergreen experienced the greatest growth with a 32% increase followed by the county with a 16% increase. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 86 properties

434-996-3525

sold representing 30 detached homes and 56 attached/condos. Hence, 65% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides Wintergreen, the county locality with the most sales is Shipman with 14 sales representing 19% of the market for non-resort localities. Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; Q3 with 63 sales was the strongest quarter followed by Q2 with 58 sales and Q1 with 51 sales. The strongest month for Q1-Q3 was May with 24 sales followed by August with 23 sales. The slowest month was February with only 15 sales. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. For further explanation and comparison relative to a property you want to sell or purchase, contact a real estate professional. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl, calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. If you’re ever asked to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, just make sure they haven’t already walked 349 miles in those shoes already — because at about mile number 350, those shoes need to be replaced. “The purpose of the walk was to give people a visual reminder of the fact that things that look impossible can be done if you just don’t give up,” said Ryan Ray, who recently walked 3,050 miles across America (replacing his shoes every 350 miles or so). “I do motivational speaking and I’m a writer. And this was about me taking my own advice. I always tell people to find something you love and do it with passion, so I combined my three biggest passions: traveling, speaking, and writing.” Ryan, who spent about five months this year walking from his home in Los Angeles to New England, made a stop at Greenwood Gourmet in Western Albemarle at the Potter’s Craft Cider tasting booth on one of the final days of his journey, which ended in New York City a few weeks later.

He walked alone the entire trip (save three pit stops to visit his mom’s house, his dad’s house, and the White House and started his walk with only 1,000 Facebook fans, but Ryan had incredible support from his virtual community, most of whom found him via social media. Thanks to his ever-growing online community — he now has over 33,000 Facebook fans — he got to sleep in a warm bed for the majority of his trip. During the 177 nights of his journey, he stayed with 135 families and only pitched his tent 31 times. Which is good. “I’m not really an outdoor person,” said the guy who just spent 10 out of ever 11 days walking eight miles a day at approximately three miles per hour. At the end of his walk, he flew to Tennessee to start his post-hike speaking engagements. Next up? Some speaking in Washington, D.C., Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas before heading back to Los Angeles as Ryan thinks up his next idea. “And then I’ll find another journey,” he said. “The point is to set a goal and make it happen. Maybe it’s walking, maybe it’s kayaking. Just do what you love.” BRL

What are trusts and why do people make them? You may have heard that trusts are good, or maybe not. You may have seen in the tax map book some of the properties around the county appear to be owned by a trust, but what does that mean? A trust simply creates a legal arrangement between two positions/people; a Trustee and a Beneficiary. The Trustee has all the control and responsibility to manage the trust’s assets for the best interest of the Beneficiary (the one who gets all the benefit of the trust assets). Initially, it is the Trustmaker (the individual making the trust) that makes the decision of who will serve as the Trustee and who the beneficiaries of the trust will be. In many trusts, the Trustmaker makes themselves the Trustee and the Beneficiary while they are living. After death, the Trustee and Beneficiary change to those people the Trustmakers chose when they created the trust. After the death of the Trustmaker, a trust will be privately settled; no one besides the Trustee and the beneficiaries will know what the trust assets are and where they are getting distributed, unlike a Last Will & Testament. (A Will is a publicly available document which gets recorded at the Courthouse for any and all to see.) Some trusts distribute the trust property to the beneficiaries in continuing separate trusts for each beneficiary. This arrangement often provides some significant asset protection for the beneficiaries – sometimes even giving the beneficiaries asset protection from divorce or creditors. Trusts are the ideal way to pass assets to a loved one who has a permanent disability. For most people receiving disability benefits, receiving even a small inheritance can cause huge problems; most likely they will lose all of their benefits until the inheritance is exhausted. At which time, they have to reapply for those same benefits as though they had never before received them. A trust can avoid all of this trouble, if created properly. A trust may be revocable or irrevocable at the time it is created. A revocable trust allows the Trustmakers to amend or change the trust later if they so desire. An irrevocable trust is not changeable after it is signed. The choice of which type depends upon the goals of the Trustmaker; some very substantial legal protection can be extended to assets in an irrevocable trust. Often, an irrevocable trust will be used to hold real estate that the Trustmaker would like to make off-limits in case they need nursing home care later. Trusts offer a great deal of flexibility in estate planning. A Trustmaker has many more options in how to leave assets to their loved ones. If you are considering a trust in your planning, speak to an attorney that practices estate planning for guidance and help today!

BRL Country is a Festivus Affair Blue Ridge Life Country is a Four Season Resort of its own. We’re fresh off from the Festy weekend and now preparing for Adventures on the James Games III – 5K Night Trail Run & Fall Festival at James River State Park. There is not a dull moment around here if you are the adventurous type. This past month, as the season has shifted from summer to fall, there has not been a shortage of great events and happenings around the area. The last few weeks has seen Wintergreen’s Summer’s End Festival, Lockn’ and the Festy, just to name a few. One of the many treasures around the area are the great breweries. One of my favorite winter-warmer Stouts is the Dark Hollow from Blue Mountain Brewery. For years, when the first bottle hit the shelves, I was in. Recently, on one of my trips over to the Nelson County Tourism office to receive my next assignment

(sounds kind of James Bondish), our conversation turned to how to get to our rally point. When I took a look at the map, I saw “Dark Hollow.” When I asked about the area, I was told to watch out for the headless horseman and other treacherous affairs that have been known to occur. Actually it was just the opposite. Orchards and breathtaking views is a more appropriate description. My travels involved going from Lovingston back over to Nellysford. Dark Hollow was a ‘short-cut’ from Highway 56 to Highway 151. One thing I have learned about short-cuts around the area: distance is shorter but time is relative. This was the same weekend as Lockn’ to give you some reference to weather conditions. So as the roads went from pavement to dirt, storms began rolling through the area. I found myself driving through some apple orchards as a few streaks of lightning flew overhead. Behind me

the sun was still shining. So the dark clouds and lightning had great contrast to the rolling landscape. I had to pull over and watch as the rolling orchard hills had a very thrilling shine about them. Before I knew it I was popping back out on Highway 151 and the adventure was done. Little unexpected adventures are the best. You have your intended route and then there is the unintended route. Both will take you to the same destination but it’s the unintended route that adds the flavor. I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to the winter. Did you know we used to host trail running events over at Devils Backbone year around? I used to look forward to the winter events more than any other. Starting around Halloween, we had great times running around the grounds with headlamps in the dark. I was always impressed how many people would show up in costume

ready to run in the dark where we had ghosts and ghouls waiting to scare them off their feet. I had always hoped for a snow run but Mother Nature of the Nelson district just threw us drizzly days or even better, days that were 65 and sunny. You just never knew what the weather was going to be but the runners would always be back. So your warmer days may be behind you soon but don’t let that deter you for setting out that front door on your next adventure. Hit the trails and go for a run, hike or bike. Sherando and the Blue Ridge Parkway are always there waiting for you to pick the route. Camping can still be a thrill in the winter. You just have to be prepared! If its gear you need, Rockfish Gap Outfitters is well versed in knowing what you need when you get out there. Let the front door be the gateway not the barrier. Embrace the Adventure!

The Prudent Pruner The savvy gardener not only carries a landscape that flexes its botanical bounty with numerous highly desirable species of plants, but pruners that only leave the sheath at the appropriate time. Job after job, year after year, I watch as uninformed contractors and homeowners alike reconcile a year’s growth in a weekend and then exhibit their malpractice to all their guests for the next five months of turkey dinners, Ho-Ho-Ho’s, Auld Lang Syne and Irish celebrations. These pruning cuts are not only untimely, but allow winter’s desiccating touch to leave a mark on evergreens that requires an additional touch up the following year when the bees begin buzzing around again in late March. So sheath your pruners, enjoy the fall weather and find out what the savvy gardeners don’t want you to know. At the top of the list of ones to prune are always trees. During the winter months, leaves have fallen and you can see clearly into the canopy and locate those crisscrossing limbs that may be rubbing another limb or trees that just need a little lift. This is also a good time to limb up trees so that their shape continues to move the canopy up instead of in your walking/driving area. A good rule of thumb for young trees is to keep one third of the tree in trunk and two thirds in canopy. To reduce the chance of a larger limb ripping bark down as it falls, first make a ½ inch cut under the limb out about 2 feet and then cut just beyond that cut to remove the weight of the limb. As the limb falls, the undercut will not allow the limb to rip the bark and leave an ugly scar. After the first cut, the weight is effectively gone and the last piece is much easier. In the “no cut” list are really

the bulk of your plants. Boxwood, hollies, laurels and the like show that ugly scar for the entire cold season if pruned. We opt to take out some of the larger pieces of these (we call ‘horns’) for winter decorations and leave the rest for that cool early spring day in early March. Winter damage or burn, which is almost guaranteed, also cannot be removed if the plants have already been pruned in the fall. Once you leave the evergreens, we get more into some of the deciduous shrubs like Hydrangeas, Viburnums and the like. It is imperative that you have a good understanding of these plants bloom cycle since some, like Viburnums, have already set bud and a pruning cut removes blooms. For these plants, remember the May rule of pruning: if it blooms before May 1, prune it after it blooms; if it blooms after May 1, prune if before it blooms. Okay, this is really rough and is not always applicable, but it does weed out the vast majority of plants and acts as a good guideline. Panicle hydrangea, on the other hand, bloom on new wood and can be pruned early. However, those old blooms act as decorations in the cold of winter and therefore should not be pruned until the first of March. Ornamental grasses of all sorts should be avoided like the plague for a fall cut. Mostly it is connected to root rot stemming from excessive moisture during the winter months. I consider the majority of these plants to be ornamental in nature – in particular after a snowfall. Moisture removal by the roots is aided by the standing foliage – once the foliage is cut, the plants ability to remove that water is greatly reduced and leaves it open to root born pathogens. Yes, liriope fits into this category as well.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My family wants me to fill out a living will. What is that? Your family has a great idea. It can be hard to think about this, but at some point we all are going to die. This is a fact and we do not have control over it. What we do have control over is what medical care we receive at the end of our life. A living will, also called an advanced medical directive, is how we can let people know our wishes for medical care at the end of our life. All adults should have a living will regardless of health status. A living will can state what treatments or procedures you do want to have performed, or what treatments or procedures that you want withheld at the end of your life. It also allows you to appoint a person to act on your behalf, if you are not able to make the health care decisions for yourself. At the end of life do you want everything to be done to keep you alive? If so, great – put it in your living will. Do you want to be

allowed to die peacefully without any heroic measures? Great – put it in your living will. Do you want something in between? Put it in your living will. People often tell me that their family knows what they want and they don’t think a living will is necessary. It can be difficult for family members to make decisions based on a past conversation, and different family members may remember the discussion differently. In order to protect yourself and to help you family be sure about your wishes - put it in your living will! Information about living wills can be found at your doctor’s office. A living will is sometimes done through a lawyer, although this is not absolutely necessary. Talk to your family and your doctor about your wishes for end of life care, even if that is likely to be a long way off. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
