thepublishers When you have 75% of your family celebrating birthdays within the span of a week or so, you hover the cursor over your to-do list, shift-click as you drag down, and pound the delete button. “I think we should go to the dinosaur museum tomorrow,” I told the kids the day before Adam’s birthday. “No workbooks tomorrow?” “Nope. No school stuff,” I replied. The next morning came super early. Early enough to pass a kid on the road waiting for the school bus . The plan was to get to the National Museum of Natural History right as it opened. As we crossed over the Potomac, Peyton caught my glance in the rear view mirror with a question: “Will the museum have a gift shop?” Cringing, I told her I’m sure it did. The District is not the place I remember as a kid. It was grittier back then and if you wanted to walk around the White House, you could actually see through the windows a bit if the rooms were lit. As we drove into an underground parking garage, our truck was wanded and searched and there were TSA-like security screens at the entry of each building. This was a first for the kids and as odd as it was for them,
they did well. And I did beam a little when Adam shot a sincere “Excuse me ma’am” to one of the guards who promptly volleyed back with a “Yes sir!” We hit the highlights: The obligatory picture in front of the huge elephant, the big whale, the evolution of Man and his “spooky” skulls, a watered down dinosaur exhibit (it’s under renovation), the stuffed tigers and animals that looked like ancestors of the deer we see at our farm. And the gift shop. A plush giraffe for Peyton and a chomping T-rex for Adam. As for mom, lunch at Old Ebbitt Grill was on my to-do-list but I settled for the $3 pretzel from the food truck. Shift-click, delete! Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

NOVEMBER 2016
basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Tempus keeps Fugiting, Thanksgiving Picks If it feels like the sun was just beaming us with 80-degree temps, and the fields overflowed with smiling flowers, you’re not alone. “It escapes, irretrievable time,” and low and behold, here we are in autumn’s midst, Thanksgiving upon us. But, I’m not complaining. For me no other season can touch Fall’s poignant beauty. And no other holiday comes close to defying the kitschy commercialism and rampant consumerism the others seem to encourage. But equally, no other holiday calls for quite the expectation and incumbent disappointment of pairing the right wine with such a spasmodic offering of indigestion… I mean, food. Okay, I jest. Wine and food were not born to cause undue stress, but to be shared and enjoyed, and here’s a simple secret: for wine, limit your guests’ choices to three or four good bottles, but have ample supply of each, and all should be well. With that in mind, opt for lower alcohol wines, and wines with clean fruit and good acidity that compliment, rather than
overpower, the food. Alsatian whites with high acidity and luscious fruit are good bets with turkey and the fixins. As are high-acid Chenin Blancs and lighter reds from grapes like Gamay, Frappato, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt or St. Laurent. Sparkling wines provide great pre-feast aperitifs with bubbles that you can carry right on through the meal. To help guide you through the Thanksgiving wine maze: Pre-feast: Thibaut Janisson, Brut Xtra – Made right here in our own back yard, Claude Thibaut’s Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is as gorgeous as they come. When I close my eyes and sip, I always think I’m drinking Champagne. But of course, it’s better, because we’re supporting local production and Claude’s sparkler wears a softer price tag than most Champagne. Elegant and complex, with aromas of almond and toast. Perfect with salty appetizers. $35.99 Langlois-Château, Crémant de la Loire – Another versatile sparkler that pairs beautifully with everything from oysters to cheese to the thirsty mouths of your guests. Fresh citrus and pear notes.
Avec Feast: Domaine St. Rémy, Riesling, reserve, Herrenweg, 2013 (dry)– The pure fruit and acidity of the Riesling cuts through the richness of the turkey, for not only a perfect pairing but also a perfect palate cleanser. $24.99 Domaine Ehrhart, Pinot Gris, Im Berg, 2012 – Fragrant and rich, with melon, peach, pepper and spice notes. $19.99 Post-Feast: Broadbent, Rainwater Madeira – Notes of dried figs, toffee, crème brulée, marzipan, walnut and dates. But it’s not cloying at all. An amazing bottle for the price, and the great thing is, it will keep indefinitely if guests don’t finish the bottle. But don’t count on that! $17.99 In the end, I don’t think it really matters what you eat or drink, but with whom you share it. Here in our little pocket of paradise, we’ve so much for which to be grateful. Please help extend this gratitude, by offering compassion to all and opt for humanely raised turkeys and pigs, or forgoing the family feast all together and volunteering time for those less fortunate. Happy Thanksgiving and many blessings to all.

Cari Culver and her adorable fouryear-old son, Lachlan, whom she would affectionately call, ‘love’ or ‘my dear, stood waiting for me when I reached the end of the winding road of Jarmans Gap. Lachlan says a quick “hi,” and then bolts to his tiny bike and proceeds to ride around the property, only taking breaks to catch crickets and show them off to us. He had me at “hello.” “We are Heritage Glenn Farm, and my part is farm/project manager, I do the day to day running,” introduces Cari as we take a seat overlooking the turkey fields. And aside from a couple of barns, that’s really all there is out there; acres upon acres of land, and more than a thousand turkeys. That and two guardian Llamas named Sequoia and Silk Buttons. Kelly Turkey is actually a UK based, multi-generation family company which hatched the plan to bring its revolutionary turkeys overseas. Derek and Mollie Kelly, of Danbury, Essex founded their business in the 1970’s when the white-meat market went corporate and threatened to drive other breeds to extinction. In the mid1980’s, The Kellys and their son, Paul gathered the remaining flocks of the bronze breed they would later call their own. Today they ship their KellyBronze babes across the globe to a 20-acre free-range farm in Crozet. And on the receiving end, Cari Culver, her husband Judd, and their two young sons couldn’t be more perfect for the job. “My husband and I met at Virginia Tech, and we were both in the Animal Science Program,” explains Cari. “I did an Agriculture-Economics degree as well, and I actually got a Masters in Dairy Science. My husband has a Masters in Turkey Nutrition”. She giggles, humbly somehow, as she layers the icing on the cake as far as their professional resumé is concerned. “This is what we’ve always wanted to do. It’s so hard to find a niche and have a family farm, and it’s something we wanted for our boys. It was our dream.” Cari and Judd actually lived in Scotland for seven years before plotting their return to the US. It was at this point that Paul Kelly approached the couple for a partnership. “In 2012, we still lived in the UK and we had only 150 birds the first year we started. And we were just doing a test market to see, ‘Is this gonna work in the US? Are people going to buy a bird that’s expensive and [raised differently]?’”

“The process is the unique part,” according to Cari. “These guys were grown to full maturity, which means they lay fat down. It’s just like when you think about a well marbled steak, it’s just very expensive to do that with turkeys because as they get older, they eat more and more food.” A diet consisting of grass, soya, corn and fresh well water. Doesn’t seem like a lot until you multiple it by a thousand hungry beaks. “When they are harvested, everything is a dry process, we use no water, and we’re actually able to dry age the birds, which is kind of like your aged beef, it gives it a nice tenderness. So you get the full flavor from the fat and the tenderness from being dry aged.” With selling points like that, they sold out the first year they tested the US waters. They doubled the stock the next year, and sold out again. At which point they decided they could justify the capital investment required for taking the project abroad. “This will be our second year on this farm and facility. This farm was in major disrepair. We applied for a bunch of grants, we applied for a fencing grant to protect the waterways, and we’ve been fortunate in that we’ve gotten a few of the grants we applied for,” Cari says. continued on page 14

“Our goal is to have everything on farm. We’ll have the hatchery, and they’ll go into the brooder day-old, and then they’ll go in the field and then they’ll be harvested here. Right now, we don’t have the hatchery here yet – that’s our next phase. Until then, we have the eggs shipped from the UK.” “We have about 1300 birds, and this is perfect land for them. Twenty acres and all fenced. We have hot wire on top and bottom,” Cari instinctively pauses to explain, as if she’d been asked many times before, “If the turkeys wanted to get out, they could, they can fly, they don’t have anything clipped. It’s to keep predators out”. I happened to fit into the category of predator when I began my visit to the farm; with my strange and unfamiliar camera lens poking through holes in the fence to get the money-shots. A couple of the girls got testy – not appreciating the cameos before the sun had fully risen I suppose – and starting pecking at my lens. I stood my ground (barely), watching through the frame – acutely aware of the fact that the fence which was meant more for me than for them, and my unfamiliar, insignificant camera were all that stood between me and their beaks of fury. By the time I resigned my post, they were bored of me; barely looking my way as they strutted past, or ruffling feathers as my shutter clicked. I bid the ladies, ‘Adieu’ and went on my way. Lachlan held my hand as he and Cari walked me back to my car to say goodbye. I was no longer the unfamiliar. Not to him, the turkeys, or the farm. BRL

NOVEMBER 2016
After more than three decades of working in technology in northern Virginia – complete with putting three kids through school (the fourth is still at home) – Mike Albers and his wife, Adrienne, decided to steer clear of traffic and aim for a less hectic lifestyle. Less hectic, but more horsepower. Behind the wheels of a white first generation Pinzgauer is where we find Mike up in the vineyard. His wine wagon is a Swiss monster of a machine that forces driver and passenger to shout over the engine’s aggressive purr. “We love it here in Nelson County,” said Mike, who (officially) purchased DelFosse Vineyards and Winery in May of this year. “The people are so warm; it’s such a family-oriented community. We are so happy to be here in Nelson.” Even though the Alberses only purchased Delfosse a few months ago, this isn’t actually their first harvest season. During the year it took to transfer ownership from the DelFosse family to the Albers family, Mike was very hands on in learning how to make the wine, as well as bottling and blending. Mike says he has a few business and marketingrelated ideas for down the line, but right now he’s focused on keeping things the way they always have been at the Faber-area winery. “The staff is fantastic and we want to keep things the way that it is for a while to really understand the business and build on the brand,” he said. “There’s been a great foundation here built by the DelFosse family and we are excited to take the next step.” With about 35 years of experience in the business world, Mike thinks that he can use those skills to help get people out to Delfosse, because, as he says: “Once we get people here, they love it.” Mike and Adrienne had been planning to go into the winery business for about three years before they found Delfosse. The couple started learning more and more about the industry and the deeper they got into it, the more excited they got. But they had been looking around for the right property for quite some time before anything started to feel right. It wasn’t until they met Genevieve DelFosse that things really fell into place.
We caught up with Mike Albers right as the fall harvest was ramping up. As the new owner of DelFosse Vineyards & Winery, he’s taking over an awardwinning wine operation founded by Genevieve DelFosse and her late husband Claude in 2000.
“We came to DelFosse and this was the spot,” Mike remembered. “We’ve got the viticulture piece of it, the enology (wine making) piece and we have sales and marketing. It’s like a three-legged stool — each leg has to be strong for the stool to be strong.” It may seem like Mike has enough on his hands with his first harvest as ownership, but he’s actually already thinking ahead. The land where Delfosse is now was an apple orchard from the 1920s to the 1970s and Mike wants to hear the stories of the land before it’s too late. “There are a lot of old timers around here who have a lot of stories to tell,” he said. “There are so many great people who have seen Nelson County grow. They’re just such great, down-to-earth people and they’re happy to tell you their stories.” BRL

STAUNTON

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

Downtown Staunton’s newest addition, Farmhouse Kitchen and Wares, quite literally brings something new to the table – and I got to sit at that table. Michelle Sandy, camera-shy owner/operator and the maker of meals, spoiled my taste buds and left me with a new dish to dream about – “The Monaco”: Homemade roast beef, Havarti, arugula, and herb mayo. And yes, I do still salivate when I think about it. “I’m surprised by how much people like my food,” admits Michelle, with a smile as bright as her green eyes. “Which sounds funny, but I really am, the first two weeks we had a line around the block. I make the roast beef fresh every day, and sell out every day. Same thing with the quiche – I had never made quiche before I started this, but people kept requesting it.” Michelle retired from Global Food Safety after 17 years “in the corporate world.” She quit her job in August 2015 and decided to work in refugee camps in Greece for five months.
If you’re smelling the homemade roast beef, blame it on Farmhouse Kitchen and Wares.

What’s happening in Nelson? 2016 third quarter residential real estate summary
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
As expected, improvement was noted in Q3 sales compared to the previous quarters (Q1 and Q2) in 2016, but sales were 9% below the same Q3 in 2015. However, since September sales were extremely strong, it may fuel a good finish for the remainder of the year. Here is a quick market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Q1-Q3 Countywide Overview; 167 residential properties sold in Q1Q3 of 2016 which represents a 5% decrease from the same time period in 2015 when 176 properties sold. Q1-Q3 Statistical Comparisons; Q1-Q3 2015 recap: 176 sales, median $195,500, average price $242,256, average price per sq ft 133.33, Days on Market (DOM) 198. Q1-Q3 2016: 167 sales, median $207,000, average price $240,608, Average price per sq ft 129.61, Days on
Market (DOM) 191. The 2016 year to date market reflects improvement in median price, and properties that sold incurred fewer days on market. However, the average selling price and price per sq ft dropped. The improvement in median could be reflective of the mix of sales, especially in the lower end market. In Q1-Q3 2016 there were only 28 sales at or below 100k, compared to 43 in Q1-Q3 2015. There were not as many high-end sales either, as only 9 have sold above 500k in Q1-Q3 2016 compared to 14 during the same time period in 2015. On a positive note, inventory has been dwindling for several years in a row now. There are currently 293 properties for sale at an average price per sq ft of 166.55 compared to 342 this time last year at a price per sq ft of 161.73; this is a 14.3% reduction in inventory. While the asking price may be higher per sq ft, the selling price per sq ft was not higher. If you plan to put your
Marlo Allen
property on the market, make sure that you set your asking price based on sold comps and NOT on inflated, unsold properties. Setting a market driven price can make the difference in being SOLD and not just FOR SALE. Q1-Q3 Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 80 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 16 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 71 sales. When comparing Q1-Q3 2016 sales with Q1-Q3 2015 sales, only 1 market experienced growth. Stoney Creek sales increased by 14.3%, while Wintergreen sales dropped by 8% and the county sales fell by 5.3%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 80 properties sold representing 30 detached homes and 50 attached/ condos. Hence, 63% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides

“The tables and chairs were upcycled from the Beverly Restaurant that was open for quite some time in downtown Staunton, an iconic breakfast place. I thought it kind of a shame for them to leave the area,” says Michelle. “I collected one-of-a-kind European finds in my travels around the world. We have a French baguette basket, a potato bucket, egg basket, chicken feeder, custom furniture, and everything is for sale!” With so much on her plate as far as the business goes, Michelle admits she isn’t the only cook in the kitchen. “My husband helps me daily, my daughter Madison will fill in if I need help, and my son Braylon actually works here as well and does a lot of the ordering. “I work with a lot of local farmers. And I know a lot of people don’t want to hear this, but I do buy from Sysco. But the reason I buy from Sysco is because they have a partnership with the Charlottesville Food Hub, and I think it’s really important for people to know, because they have partnered to help with delivering. “And so, because Sysco can deliver, I have access to over two-hundred more farmers that normally I couldn’t get produce from because they were over the mountain. So it was really important for me to understand that relationship.”

When she got home, she needed a new outlet. Six months later and here we sit, chatting at a windowside table for two. “Farmhouse Kitchen and Wares was the brainchild I’d been working on for a couple years, at least,” explains Michelle. “I just wanted to bring something to Staunton that I saw in small communities all around the United States. Farm-to-table is very important to me, hence my background in GFS, and I wanted to bring homemade food to the people here. “We use a lot of family recipes, like the zucchini jam that was my grandmother’s, and I make all my jams in-house. Being an avid cook, I need housewares close to me, so we just put the two together.” The quaint, black-and-white checkerboard tiled room was well lit and had a Farmhouse-French ambiance that really brought out my inner Julia Child.

When it comes to naming farms, Clay and Linda Trainum seem to have solved any issues with simplicity. Linda thought the name made sense because the farm – Autumn Olive Farms, that is – was completely overgrown with the stuff. Clay agreed, since Autumn Olive is a huge part of their pigs’ diets. “Plus it starts with an A,” said Clay. “Which puts your listing right up top.” But an alphabetical superlative is not what is making a name for Autumn Olive Farms, which sits just north of Waynesboro. It’s the quality of their product – by a long shot. “When you try his pork, you can tell,” said Chef Frank Debons, the executive chef at Devils Backbone Brewing Company, which recently hosted a pig roast at its inaugural Hoopla Festival. “It’s a totally

different taste. It’s way, way better.” Frank, who worked in New York City for 20 years before landing at DBBC in a search for fresh air, said that Devils Backbone uses far too much meat for things like pulled pork to make it cost effective to order exclusively from Clay. But for the a few select menu items – like the Basecamp’s porchetta sandwiches – and special events (including weddings and last month’s Hoopla) it’s Autumn Olive’s Berkabaw pork or nothing. The story of the Berkabaw is a long one for another time, but – in short – Clay grew up “just down the road a ways” from Patterson’s Farm and their registered Berkshire, one of the most well-known heritage breeds and known for a fatty, rich flavor. Decades later, Clay and Linda, along with their sons Tyler and Logan (who also work at Autumn Olive full time) moved back to the family farm to raise

Trusts for Beneficiaries By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC
Do your children have creditor issues? Do you have a piece of property that you would like to stay in the family? When considering how to leave assets to your beneficiaries, you may want to consider leaving it to them in trust. There are two basic ways a beneficiary can receive assets from your estate: outright or in trust. In outright distributions, the asset(s) are simply retitled in the name of the beneficiary with no further oversight, parameters, or protections. Often, a check is simply cut in the name of the beneficiary and the beneficiary can then do whatever he/she likes with it. In Virginia, we have an additional concern: Virginia has a unique legal structure which allows real property to “drop like a rock” through an estate, allowing real property to pass outright to beneficiaries immediately upon death of the landowner. Without proper planning, this structure can create substantial problems among beneficiaries. Outright inheritance provides no protection for beneficiaries from their creditors, lawsuits, or divorce.
Jethro, Clay Trainum’s Great Pyrenees, is just as much a part of the farm as the pigs. Those pigs enjoy feeding on the farm’s namesake, Autumn Olive, (shown below).
Alternatively, through a well drafted estate plan, you can direct that your beneficiaries receive an inheritance in trust. In this arrangement, upon your passing, the assets are initially titled in the name of the trust and not in the name of the beneficiary. The trust then directs distributions as you have designed, based on your particular goals and objectives. If you know that one or more of your beneficiaries is facing creditor issues, a likely divorce, or other legal issues, a trust can give you confidence that those assets will be safe from these sorts of claims. Each trust can be specifically designed to suit the needs and goals of your family. For example, a trust can be designed to allow your children to inherit a certain piece of real property and at their death can be further directed to stay in the family, instead of passing to a sonin-law or daughter-in-law. Planning for generations! For younger beneficiaries, you may create a trust allowing staggered distributions to occur over time, such as in thirds at various ages of the beneficiary, i.e. 1/3 at age 25, 30, and 35.
Ossabaw pigs and started working with Bill Patterson (and his sons, John and Tom) to develop a brand new breed: the Berkabaw. “We developed a really good symbiotic relationship so that we can both have the scale we need to have good pricing and keep our great, quality products,” said Clay. “The Ossabaw and the Berkshire are two of – if not the – finest culinary pigs in the world. They both have strengths and weaknesses, but we find that when we cross the two, we’re getting the best of both.” From the Berkshire, the Berkabaw gets a better growth rate and the manageability that comes from 350 years of domestication. And from the Ossabaw, which have been breeding without interference on Ossabaw Island, Ga. years since they were left there as a result of Spanish shipwrecks about 500 years ago, the Berkabaw gets the hardiness, material instinct and rich fatty flavor.
More commonly, trusts are designed so that each beneficiary is given their own trust after your death. The trust assets are divided into as many subtrusts as there are beneficiaries (in much the same fashion as would occur in the absence of a trust). Then each beneficiary can be given some or all control of the management and distributions of their own subtrust when they reach a certain age. However, because of the trust, the beneficiary may have some very significant asset protection, depending on the particular trust design. Trusts can be designed in a myriad of ways, giving great flexibility in design and implementation. Consider leaving assets in trust to your beneficiaries, speak with an estate planning attorney to find out how!

Clay couldn’t think of any other pork producer combining the Ossabaw and the Berkshire at the scale he’s doing with the Pattersons – at least not at the scale they’re doing (they have about 1,000 animals between the two farms). What he’s proudest of, though, is the communication between the farms and the chefs he works with and sells to. “This has all really been developed in collaboration with the chefs,” he said. “It’s really intentional to take these two fine genetics and to cross [them] and then take the offspring to chefs. It’s purposefully done.” So when it came time to have a special Thursday Night Hoopla to attract folks from within the community, Frank knew he had to turn to Clay for the full pork roast – some-

thing Clay and Linda love to do – even though their primary business comes from selling halves and other primal cuts to butchers or restaurants. “We do roast pigs for our customers as a value added way to say thank you,” said Clay, whose sons and employee, Miles, managed their smoker at DBBC, where just about everyone came back for seconds of the roast pork. Clay thinks the flavor comes from the way the DNA of the two breeds have combined. But Chef Frank has a different theory. “It’s the way it’s raised, with the pig outside all day long. They’re outside breathing fresh air,” he said. “Happy pigs make good pork.” BRL

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure
Last month, we took a trip just over to the west side of I-81 over in Rockbridge County. The trip was close and so worth it. The purpose of our adventure was to stay in a tipi, check out Lexington and explore Douthat State Park trails. The word that caught my eye was “tipi,” of course. How often does one get to stay in a tipi and, for that matter, ever run into to stay in in the first place? Well, look no further and you won’t have to travel too far to stay thanks to Jeremiah & Sara Holland (www. jeremiahholland.com). The tipi is located on their farm tucked away in the rolling hills and farmland of Rockbridge County. The construction is the epitome of a traditional tipi you would expect to see. The one window looks out towards the rolling landscape. We happened to catch an overcast day and awoke to clouds rolling between the ridges. When you walk in, the feel is cozy and basic with a few nice ameni-
ties: Sleep Comfort Queen size bed, Keurig coffeemaker and a drawstring operated ceiling fan that draws air right out the functioning top of a tipi, should it get too warm. Two steps out the front door and you have an
ENOC and a fire pit. Now the interesting part that I really liked was the bathroom/outhouse. Only 20 yards away and you have full facilities in a top screened-in shower/bathroom. It was such a unique place & experience we could talk about it forever. Two days was not enough. Only 15 minutes down the road, we check out Lexington for breakfast before heading up the Maury River and then on out to Douthat State Park. We were just a touch early for the Fall colors but the leaves were starting just because it had been so dry the latter part of the summer. Douthat State Park is a place I have enjoyed visiting for years. The typical trip has been with friends for mountain biking. The trails around Douthat are absolutely incredible for mountain biking. Well this time, we decided to hike! We started from the Douthat Lodge that is about halfway up the mountain. From there, we did a 5 mile circuit using sometimes
technical Mountain Side and Mountain Top Trails. With all the other offerings from Douthat State Park, this is a must do, especially in the shoulder seasons. What a trip! The Finale of Wintergreen’s 1st Tread & Trail Series wrapped up recently. We had a crazy good time with it this year. Bold Rock Hard Cider (Big supporter, like top tier) helped make the fun happen. Bold Rock MTB Team Member Laura Wolf was crowned as the 1st Queen of the Mountain. Congrats! Over the three weekends of racing, we had an enthusiastic crowd with the likes of nationally-recognized mountain biker Jeremiah Bishop coming out and whipping through the course. Jeremiah just makes any course on a mountain bike look easy. Big thanks for the support goes to Bold Rock Hard Cider, Blue Ridge Cyclery, Crozet Running, Starr Hill Brewery, Wintergreen Premier Properties and Blue Ridge Life!

There are many different tools in the arsenal of the modern day landscape architect and designer. From water features that double as fire pits to patios with outdoor living areas complete with sink, grill, bar and fridge. However, some of the weapons wielded are ones that really don’t speak that loud but have a tremendous impact on the landscape. Unlike swales or ‘V’ or ‘U’ cut ditches that typically flank driveways to protect them from washouts, berms are raised areas that take on many different tasks – from moving water away from drives and homes to giving different 3-D aspects to both the garden and the lawn. The key to a successful berm is shape, height and how quickly is rises and falls in relation to the surrounding soil elevation. So many designers go to the rock lined ditch as a means of controlling water that impacts drives. The issue is that these rocks have rough texture and therefore collect leaves and twigs as much as they collect water. Leaves and twigs, when not removed on a timely basis, break down and ultimately become compost – fertile soil perfect for any weed or nondesirable to grow in. Now your rock lined ditch is growing and no longer has the typical broad ‘U’ shape that is necessary for collecting and controlling water. These rock lined ditches are also hit often while snow is being removed from the property. A berm, on the other hand, can turn the water before it ever impacts the drive. Soil placed on the upper side of the drive in the shape of a broad swooping arc can divert the water away from the drive and requires considerably less maintenance. Soil and debris that collects above the berm, continues to increase the ultimate height of it, thereby increasing its efficacy in preventing a wash out. Add large rocks
in random spots, perennials and even shrubs and trees and the berm now looks completely natural. Water moving against your home is a homeowners worst nightmare. It is not a matter of if it will eventually enter into the residence, it’s a matter of when. Berms can be used to control this water as easily as controlling water impacting a drive. These berms should be large in overall length and gradually go from the natural elevation to a higher point and then either back to grade or should be flanked by a retaining wall on the downhill side. The more gradual the grade means that either plants or grass planted on top should not be water deficient since the grade is less pronounced. Again, these berms are placed above the residence and have a gentle arc that catches the water and then terminates once you have gotten the water past where it could impact the structures. You can even use these berms in conjunction with a culvert pipe – the berm collects the water and directs it to a culvert which takes the water underground and carries it to a suitable exit where it no longer has any impact on the landscape. Using berms in the landscape can gain a different perspective on a normally flat lawn or landscape. However, you must be careful that the rise and fall of it is gradual since a quick up and down of soil will leave the landscape plants in a water deficit. The best berms appear completely natural – a gradual rise, peak and fall over a greater distance allows for grass to occupy both part of the rise and part of the fall with landscape plants sandwiched in between. Add boulders, perennials, trees, and shrubs to add to the effect and create barriers to unsightly structures and adjacent neighbors. The result allows for your desired 3-D effect without negatively impacting the water resources required for plant survival.

I’m so sorry about your nephew and understand your worry as any cancer diagnosis is frightening. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men. Many of us remember Lance Armstrong’s diagnosis of metastatic testicular cancer in 1996. Approximately 8700 new cases will be diagnosed in the US this year. About 1 of every 260 males will develop testicular cancer at some point during his life. Although testicular cancer is fairly treatable, about 380 men die from testicular cancer each year. Most cases of testicular cancer occur in men between 20 and 35 years old, although it can happen at any age. A boy born with an undescended testicle has an increased risk of developing testicular cancer. Those with a family history of testicular cancer are at increased risk, although testicular cancer usually occurs in people without a family history. White men have a higher risk
of developing testicular cancer than African America or Asian American men. But many men with testicular cancer do not have any risk factors. Often a lump on a testicle is the first symptom of cancer or the testicle might be swollen or larger than normal. Unfortunately some cancers may not have symptoms until they have reached an advanced stage. Many men are resistant to seeking care for a testicular mass, but not all lumps in the testicle are cancer. Treatment options for testicular cancer may include surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, depending on the type of cancer and the stage. Survival rates for testicular cancer are quite high, especially for those found at an early stage. If you, or someone you know notices a change in a testicle, be sure to have it evaluated. These conversations with adolescent boys can be challenging, but they might be lifesaving.
