thepublishers It dawned on me one morning after breakfast that Adam was growing up and I had yet to give him “the talk.” “Momma,” he started, with a serious look on his face. “I broke it and I need a new one.” He had his finger on his tooth and I feared he had smashed it while on his skateboard, which is how he usually eats his breakfast. “What did you break, Adam?” I asked. “My tooth. I need a new one.” He let me poke my finger in his mouth and sure enough, his two bottom teeth were loose. But he is only 5, I thought. I must have been in second grade when the tooth fairy visited me for the first time. He wasn’t hurting, but he was worried. So we went to the dentist who assured him that because he had gotten his teeth at a young age, losing his baby teeth at 5 was normal. So for an entire day, I had a very solemn boy with a finger in his mouth. “You are growing up, Adam.” I told him. “Once those fall out, you’ll get big boy teeth.” He wasn’t convinced. The next day, I asked him how his teeth were and he assured me “the dentist fixed them.”
“But sweetheart,” I told him, “you are growing up and your baby teeth are going to fall out and you are going to get big teeth, like mommy and daddy.” “No, the dentist fixed it,” he assured me. For the most part, he has kept his fingers out of his mouth, at least in my presence. He reached for an apple the other day, and after taking one bite of it, he asked me to cut it up for him. The boy knows what’s up. If we’re lucky, we’ll have a white Christmas this year. We’ll be sure to bake Santa’s cookies extra crunchy and leave an extra plate for the Tooth Fairy. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Endings and New Beginnings: Tribute to Bev Lacey and Keith Dix Many people know Bev Lacey (and her flowers!) and Keith Dix, her husband. Keith’s been farming and supplying Basic Necessities with seasonal, pesticide-free veggies from May to November for many years and Bev has been growing and selling the world’s most beautiful dahlias. Excuse the hyperbole, but we here at Basics are a wee bit partial to them. What you may not know is that Keith turned eighty (he looks sixty) and between them they have ten grandkids. Add to that the fact that they love spending several months out of each year hanging out in N’Orleans. Given these, Bev has decided to simplify life and let go of Basics. And so I speak for the entire Basics family when I say, we will miss you, Bev—but we are deeply happy and of course excited for you. I, for one, will miss your beautiful integrity and work ethic: attention to detail and dedication, qualities which can feel in short supply if one listens too much to the news. I will miss the

talks of the latest new writers and good literature. You were the peopleperson, greeting all who passed through Basic Necessities’ doors warmly, while I understand wine better than most people. Thank you, Bev, for ten wonderful years. No one worked harder or more selflessly than you did. You made everyone feel important, seen and special. And you cleaned the mirrors, too! Somehow a reflection back of your beautiful spirit. But all’s not lost, for in ending we are always beginning—this time, again, it seems. In a full circle cycle, I am buying back Basics (after starting it 15 years ago) together with Sallie Justice our wonderful chef, whose reputation is spreading beyond our small valley confines. If you haven’t tried Sallie’s cooking, come dine with us on a Friday or Saturday night; you’ll be in for a magical evening. And rest assured, Bev’s spirit will continue to flourish at Basics: in the many improvements she made over the years, in the memories we all hold and in the flowers which she’ll continue to bring by...

come spring. We’ll make a few new changes, but continue to commit to using local purveyors and serving organic and seasonal cuisine. We’ll bring in new wine and cheese, but all we really intend to do is keep a good thing going, using the same simple formula that has kept us in business for fifteen years: make people happy. Oh yes, and wine. Bev would want me to advertise at least one wine, so I think it’s only fitting to mention one of my much loved producers, which has become her favourite white, Mas de Daumas Gassac – Bev says I ruined her for good, inexpensive wine, but in this case, that’s okay. This wine is a real show-stopper. Thus, in celebration of gentle change, here’s a wine that that exemplifies both tradition and innovation. An earthy, creamy blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Petit Manseng and Chardonnay that makes for a great holiday wine, full-bodied enough to stand up to varied dishes. $46

You can do whatever you want,” said Chuck, a leather worker who received a call just hours later from Martha Stewart’s office asking him to be an honoree on the Martha Stewart series, American Made. “It was an honor,” said Chuck, who works and runs a handmade leather shop with six employees in Crozet called Pinnell Custom Leather. He spent four days in New York with Martha Stewart and her staff - getting tours of her office (where there were “test kitchens after test kitchens and craft rooms after craft rooms”), seeing the layout of Martha Stewart Magazine and, most notably, being appreciated (along with 10 other American Made honorees) for his craftsmanship.

“I’m humbled by the honor of being selected,” the leather worker with decades of experience said. “I just truly love what I do, and most importantly - who I do it for.” Even as a kid growing up in the Tidewater region of Virginia, Chuck was always making art products in school. After high school, he moved to Colorado to be close to some family and try to find his way in the world. He’d never worked with leather before, but there in a little moccasin shop in Colorado Springs, he found his life’s passion. “They gave me a small practice piece just to stitch to see if I had the dexterity,” he remembers. “And in that little two-inch strip of hand sewing, I knew my life’s work had found me - for real.” When he got back to Virginia after being in Colorado for a little less than a year, he took his excitement to his high school art teacher - explaining that he’d found his passion but didn’t know exactly where to go next. The teacher recommended he work his way toward nearby Colonial Williamsburg and see if they had any leatherworking positions there. And as luck would have it, the day Chuck Pinnell applied for a job was the day funds had been allocated for an apprenticeship in the harness shop. The day after he applied, he had a job learning to make - and eventually professionally making - handmade leather equestrian supplies based on 18th century designs and patterns. After moving from shoes to saddles, he really found his niche, opening a saddle repair shop in Middleburg, Virginia, where he lived and worked for 16 years before relocating to Charlottesville and eventually into a pre-Civil War railroad station in Crozet in 1998. “It’s really perfect,” said Chuck of his shop. “I’m really blessed.” Even though Chuck knew right away that he was meant to work with leather, the business side of Pinnell Custom Leather was a whole new world. “That was a big deal,” he said, even though now he’s the boss to six loyal, long-time employees and owner of an extremely successful storefront and online community. “For the most part, I’m self-taught in leatherworking and in business. I have no formal training in either. It’s taken quite a long time to get to the level I’m at now and we have great respect in the equestrian community that I’ve served for well over 30 years in the service and the products that we make.” Chuck says he doesn’t like to name drop, but Martha Stewart was not the first notable name to recognize his gift and try to share it with others. Chuck did all the saddle work for 30 nations during the 1996 Olympic Games and even created products for the likes of Prince Philip, George H.W. Bush, and Jackie Onassis (“she used to call me Chuck,” he remembers.” Since being on the American Made series, Chuck has reconnected with old relatives, business acquaintances and customers - some of whom remember working with him decades ago and are surprised to hear he’s still working so hard. “It’s just something I’m going to forever,” he tells them. “It’s not work. What I do, it is extremely labor-intensive and it is definitely hard work, but it’s not a job; it’s my passion and it’s what I do.” BRL

Geographical happenstance can be credited for the members of Nelson County’s next up-and-coming hybrid band-baby coming together. “We all met because we were all living on Creekside Loop in Beech Grove. That’s where we all kinda got connected,” says singer and guitarist, Jacob Paul Allen (also a member of side project HoboJac). Accompanying Jacob are the Dennis sisters, Genevieve and Gabrielle, creating a perfect harmony on vocals, while their younger brother, Daniel, also assists with vocals and guitar. And although Jacob is relatively new to the music scene, the rest of the gang has been musically inclined since childhood. Performing in years of chorus and almost a decade’s worth of high school musicals between the three of them, these brothers and sisters are no stranger to the spotlight. continued on page 17

3 HIDDEN DANGERS FROM SUNLIGHT THAT ENTERS YOUR HOME.
UV Rays, Infrared Heat, & Visible Light are destroying everything inside your home. They also have an impact on your family’s health.
TRUTHS
MYTHS
• UV Rays are solely responsible for sun damage and fading • Conventional window treatments such as blinds or curtains stop fading • Double pane/LowE windows filter enough damaging rays to prevent fading • Only direct sunlight causes significant damage
• 3 types of sun rays are responsible for fading: UV, Infrared, & Visible Light. • Closed Blinds/Curtains still allow damaging rays inside your home. • Double pane/LowE windows can filter some UV Rays, but reject very little if any of the Infrared or Visible light.
SOLUTION: 3M™ Window Films installed by Clear View Window Tinting
• Reject 99.9% of UV Rays, up to 97% Infrared, & up to 85% visible light • Applied to existing windows, so they’re filtering 24/7—365 days a year. • Are very light & low in reflectivity. You literally can see through them better than clear glass.

This unique property overlooks the ski slope and mountain beyond. Totally renovated with high efficiency HVAC. Stainless appliances, granite counters and contemporary mountain rustic trim and decor make this a unique property.
1816 High Ridge Court Making their debut at the Whiskey Jar in Charlottesville, the CreekSide Band really felt the local support. “We really appreciate that people have gone out of their way to support us,” says Gabrielle, UVa grad and Legal Assistant for Rutherford Law Group in Lovingston. “And we encourage people to keep coming out and keep listening as we go.” Finding their forte in the crosswinds of modern and the more folk-Americana side of county, this group is proud to sound a little different. “The covers that we do, we’re trying to make them our own, so that it’s not just another, ‘Oh we’ve heard this before’ kind of deal. We’re trying to add our own harmonies and our own twists to it and really make it original,” explains Genevieve, who also teaches at North Branch School. With big dreams to match their big voices, the local music scene will hardly satiate this group of gorgeous go-getters. “I think the overall goal is to not be just a local, play every weekend around town kind of band,” says Jacob. “I think we may do that at the beginning, play one or two shows a month, but we definitely want to get out and travel if we can.” Currently a student at UVa, Daniel says him and the group couldn’t be more excited about their upcoming plans. “We’ve all worked together, we’ve all lived together, and it would be hard to find a closer group of people to make music with.” BRL

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES
BOLD ROCK CIDER PREPARES TO GO
BIG Bold Rock’s barn doors have only been open since June of last year, but already the high demand for their hard cider has necessitated a larger production space. “The demand has exceeded our expectations greatly.” says Bold Rock Co-founder John Washburn. “We’re going to expand up on the cliff, and the cider barn, which we call our “Apple-Chapel,” is going to enable us to do about four times the capacity and have a cliff-side venue looking out at the Rockfish Valley.” Nothing wrong with a little cider and scenery. A lot of cider is more like it. These guys were already bottling on the upwards of 50,000 a week before launching the $3 million dollar expansion project. “There will be two tasting bar areas of different character,” says Washburn. “One will be publike with low ceilings and a TV, a little bit like a sports bar. And that one will have a view through a Florida ceiling glass, the whole wall Florida ceiling glass, looking into the cider production. So you’ll be able to drink Bold Rock Hard Apple Cider and at the same time see the bottling, and the crew, and the fermentation all going on.”

And behind door number two? “The other tasting bar will be in a high-ceilinged beautiful array of beams, like a big Amish barn. And it will have a different atmosphere, more like a winery, because we’re sort of like a hybrid between a brewery and a winery,” says Washburn. Amongst the 600 or so of these gorgeous exposed whiteoak beams, there’s one in particular that you really can’t ignore. “This beam could be the biggest beam in Virginia. It’s fifty feet long, three feet thick, five thousand pounds, it’s over one hundred years old, and it was taken out of a torn down confectionery up north and stored in a barn at Virginia Tech for twenty years,” explains Washburn. “It took a crane and ten men two hours to put it in place. And it’s inscribed on one side with our motto, “Be Bold. Tread Lightly. Make it Happen!” This enormous piece of timber was actually given to the Bold Rock team by Sandy Bennett from Blue Ridge Timber. It was also his team of ten that installed the massive masterpiece. This beam, amidst the chaos of construction still in progress, stands boldly. There’s one man in particular responsible for making the Bold Rock dream a reality that can’t wait for the construction phase of the fantasy to end. “I can’t wait for it to be finished because we actually need it!” says President and Cider Master Brian Shanks. “Our demand has been so great that we just absolutely need it. And secondly because it’s such a beautiful looking building and it’s just gonna be, I think, something so wonderful and such a great experience that all of us working here will be proud to have visitors come through and look at it.”

“It’s going to be a real experience and something quite neat to see. Cider through the apples, through the pressing, through the bottling, through the tasting it at the bar, and looking out at the great view, I think all of that put together is a remarkable experience,” Shanks concludes. The Bold Rock experience has been getting only rave reviews with its Crimson Ridge Vat No. 1 winning the highest medal awarded for cider in the Governor’s Cup last year, and the Virginia Draft Cider winning International Second in the New Zealand and Australia Cider and Wine competition last year as well. “We’re winning some medals,” admits Washburn. “But mainly we’re just winning a lot of hearts I think and a lot of support because we are just a very fun place to drink in the scenery.” BRL

Advantages of selling in the winter
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Timing is everything. Fortunately, there is “perfect” timing. Unfortunately, there is “bad” timing. Quite often life events don’t fit so neatly within our lives and on our terms. Perhaps that is why sellers would rather not open up their homes to prospective purchasers over the holidays or in the cold, dreary, winter months when their home may not feel as showcase worthy. While that is understandable, buyers don’t always have the luxury of timing their needs; making a move may be dictated by job relocations, divorce, or other major life changes. Hence, no matter what the season, there will always be buyers. Let’s explore a few reasons why sellers may want to consider listing in the winter months. Less competition; everyone knows that spring brings more buyers. However, what some fail to realize is that it also brings more sellers. When a buyer has more options,
sellers have to be even more mindful of making sure their property stands out in a crowd. It may be easier to win the race in the winter when there is much less competition. More motivation; the spring market brings out more buyers, but are they more motivated? Would you rather go look at homes on a nice warm, sunny spring day OR on a cold, blistery winter day? Any buyer willing to venture out on a less than desirable winter day is probably a serious buyer. When sellers celebrate holidays with extended family and friends, so do buyers. Buyers don’t typically want to disrupt their holiday festivities either, so again, if a buyer is house hunting over the holidays, that buyer is typically a motivated buyer, one needing to purchase a home because of relocation or other life event. Cozier and inviting; emotions can
Marlo Allen
play a huge role in a buyer’s purchase decision. Hence, sellers may be able to capitalize on that fact by setting the stage to evoke that emotion. As long as they are not overdone or too cluttered, holiday decorations can be inviting. In addition, a warm interior with the fireplace going can entice a buyer to cozy up to the fire and focus on what may be a big selling feature such as a stone fireplace or an economic advantage of an alternate heat source.
to major cities, open up another opportunity for sellers by bringing in good second home prospects.
View worthy; there are BIG mountain views and then there are “seasonal” mountain views. Winter is the perfect time to feature a mountain view that may not be as evident when the foliage returns.
You never know when a buyer may be in the market for a property just like yours. If you want to sell, “any” time could be the “right” time. Follow these tips and it just may be time to celebrate!
Location, location, location; what may attract buyers to the area? In the winter, a ski resort such as Wintergreen, can be a big draw. Highly touristed areas, within a short drive

Preparation; In order to make the most of the winter sales opportunity, sellers should price the home appropriately, have the home in tip top showing condition, and make sure the home is easily accessible. Buyer’s slipping and sliding to your front door may not make the best first impression.

simplelivin’ THE MAN AND THE BIRDS by LOUIS CASSELS
This inspirational piece was featured several times in the Backroads newspaper over the years. It is a modern day parable of the old Christmas story written by Louis Cassels.
It’s been this way for over 30 years.
Whether you call our office in Appomattox, Lovingston, Orange or Charlottesville, someone you know answers the phone. You know us and we know fuel.
He was not a scrooge; he was a kind, decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family, upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn’t believe all that incarnation stuff which the churches proclaim at Christmas time. It just didn’t make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just could not swallow the Jesus story, about God coming to Earth as a Man. “I’m truly sorry to distress you,” he told his wife, “but I am a hypocrite.” That he would much rather stay home. But that he would wait up for them. He stayed. They went. To the midnight service. Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier. Then went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper. Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound, then

another. At first he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against his living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They’d been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter had tried to fly through his large landscape window. Well, he couldn’t let the poor creatures lie there and freeze. So he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter if he could direct the birds to it. He quickly put on a coat, galoshes, and tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light. But the birds did not come in. He figured food would entice them in. So he hurried back to the house, fetched bread crumbs, sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail to the yellowlighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay the birds ignored the bread crumbs, and continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them. He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around them waving his arms. Instead they scattered in every direction, except into the warm, lighted barn. And then, he realized that they were afraid of him. “To them,” he reasoned, “I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me, that I am not trying to hurt them, but to help them.” How? Any move he made tended to confuse and frighten them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed because they feared him. “If only I could be a bird and mingle with them and speak their language and tell them not to be afraid and show them the way to the safe, warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see and hear and understand.” At that very moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. And he stood there…listening to the bells. Adeste Fidelis. Listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. And he sank to his knees in the snow … BRL

The ART of
TREES Seven years ago Art and JoAnn Freeman over at Fiddler Green’s Farm in Afton decided it was time to use a piece of their property for cultivating Christmas trees. “I remember exactly why, because I think about it all the time,” says Art. “We did that as a memory to JoAnn’s father. His name was Russell Fish, and he grew Christmas trees for as long as I can remember. So we planted those Christmas trees as a memory to him. Whenever I’m working down in those trees I remember him and his love of Christmas trees.” And after all those years of farming the trees, Art admits every one of them was a learning experience.

“We put in six hundred trees the first year and we didn’t know what would grow here, so we tried six different varieties. Norway spruce, White pine, Scotch pine, Blue spruce, Balsam fir and Concolor fir. Some did better than others,” Art explains.

“The Norway spruce died the third year, they all went at the same time for some reason. People have told me we just don’t have the elevation here for that. So I won’t be putting anymore of those in.” Art and JoAnn didn’t actually start selling the trees until 2011, and it wasn’t without a little pushing and shoving on JoAnn’s part. “JoAnn said, ‘Ya know, I wonder if these trees are ready to be sold yet’. I’d been working for five years weeding and mowing and taking care of them, and I didn’t really think they were ready.” Taking matters into her own hands, JoAnn cut one of the White pines down and put it up in their living room.

“It took up the whole corner of the room!” says Art. “The scale out here when you look at these mountains, the tree looks small, but you bring it in your house and it’s huge. So we knew we were ready, and we put our sign out that afternoon.” And who happened to roll onto the Fiddler’s Green Farm that very same day? “Yvette Stafford [Blue Ridge Life’s publisher] was the first person that came. We fixed her up with a tree and so she started us off,” says Art. “It’s a good way to meet all of our neighbors around the area. They come in and you get to learn a little bit about them, and hopefully they come back the next year.” The Staffords were, in fact, back the next year. And so were the father-daughter duo from nearby Greenwood, Pheobe and Damon DeVito. “This is our third stop that we’ve checked out of tree farms and tree lots. And this is the best!” says Damon. “We had great selection, very reasonable prices and we wanted a very large tree. We wanted like a ten foot tree and it’s hard to find one that’s the right amount of fullness and not too thick at the bottom and we found it!” Now that the locals have found their Christmas tree honey-hole, Art is stocking inventory by the hundreds. “Last year was really the first big year and I had no idea that there would be so many people wanting our trees. So now I’m in catch-up mode, planting as many seedlings as I can. White pine, Balsam fir, and Concolor fir, those three are the ones I’m going to continue to plant,” says Art. Harvesting Christmas trees is definitely a year-round job, but the real reward comes at the end of that year – the time when families and neighbors go searching for that perfect tree which they will later gather around to adorn with fun festoons. That’s the best part, JoAnn says. “We planted these trees to help people make memories. And when I see something like this, it’s like everything I hoped.” BRL

Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, “To be or not to be, that is the question.” There is no question Rogue Shakespeare, Mary Baldwin’s College’s performing company, part of their Masters of Literature and Fine Arts program has answered the Bard with a resounding “to be” in their 2013-2014 season. As the high school students enter the room, they discover motionless bodies in a circle on the floor, their heads together. The actors slowly rise and invite the teens into the hearts and minds of a murderous king and his guilt-stricken queen. The story, filled with treason, fights and lusty ambition, is Rogue’s version of Macbeth. And according to Doreen Bechtol, MFA Company Manager and Director of Training the “educational school visits are one of the cornerstones” of the company’s work. Bechtol added this version of Macbeth has already delighted students at JMU and high school classes in the Shenandoah Valley and in Nelson County schools along with the two workshops where the actors train the students in stage combat and rhetoric. The company provides the one-hour performances and two teaching workshops throughout the school year for a minimal fee.

This year the company includes 11 women and 1 man who are tasked with performing a rigorous 5-play season. The season includes Macbeth, which opened in October, the Insatiate Countess and Richard II, set to open in December, Dr. Faustus opening in January and the company’s final offering of Fuente Ovejuna, opening the end of March. The graduate students handle all the acting, directing, costuming, set design and creation, while they also provide marketing, tour throughout the year, and cumulatively write a book that will be published by the MFA program at the end of the season. Bechtol said MBC administrators saw the need to add the performance component into the MFA program as a way to give students the opportunity to learn in both an academic and real-world setting. “Seeing their work outside of the institution and in a larger community” gives these graduate students insight into how to realistically make a living in the theater and to view the production in a larger context than their individual roles. She added the program is lucky to have such strong support from founders like Dr. Ralph Cohen, who is also a co-founder and the current Director of Mission for the ASC and Dr. Paul Menzer, Director of the MLitt/MFA Shakespeare and Performance graduate program and a noted Shakespeare scholar. Menzer is on sabbatical Folger Shakespeare Library through a National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) fellowship while he works on his book, “Shakespeare Anecdotally.” Another key administrator is Dr. Matt Davis, Assistant Professor and Acting Program Director in Shakespeare and Performance. Davis is also a professional actor and director with twenty years of experience in the U.S. and United Kingdom. Macbeth director and Rogue company member Riley Steiner said the graduate program provides an exceptional experience for the students and allows them to challenge themselves while still being responsible to the group and the needs of the whole company. Steiner added that students collaborate on everything as working members of the group, a big change from being autonomous actors in other venues. Fellow student Cyndi Kimmel echoed Steiner’s praise for the program. She said, “Each member brings something unique and different to the process of working together.” She added the intense season and all their duties push and encourage everyone to do their best work. And when the season ends in the spring, for these students parting will be “such sweet sorrow,” as they graduate from this special troupe of actors. BRL

Simplicity The longer I work in the horticulture industry and the more design time that I log (both in the studio and in the field), the more I am completely convinced that my best designs revolve around simplicity – more of less. More of less is one of the most overlooked options in the landscape industry. I mean who can resist the temptation to add another Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Azalea to their landscape? But more and more I see my designs moving into masses of two or three particular species or a naturalization into what is already at hand - and less of the clutter that is usually found in attempting to turn a residential landscape into an arboretum. The end result might at first seem like less of a ‘show’ but really it’s easier to expose the detail in a few beautiful objects rather than be overwhelmed by many that dwarf each other. Here are some simple moves to consider that can add a lot of ‘wow’ to your landscape. Stonework. Just yesterday I took a drive by some stunning stonework just about completely covered by a mass of Otto Luyken Laurels. Stonework is full of beautiful detail and a kaleidoscope of colors - such a shame to hide it behind a hedge. And let’s not forget to mention, it’s not cheap. Once your stonework is done, the LAST thing you want your landscaper to do is cover it up with plants. If you asked 10 nurseries about what plants look best around a retaining wall, my guess is that you would get 10 different plants as answers. My favorite landscape plant around a hardscape is grass. Yep, you just read it – grass. Good ole turf type tall fescue to the rescue. A green sheen of Kentucky 31 against that wall is exactly what you need – both in terms of from a budget standpoint and a design element. The simplicity of grass is a wonderful
compliment to the elaborate detail of stonework and allows for those details to stand out and be admired. Naturalization. Many of my clients live in homes bordered on all sides by forest, or even in the forest. When the back of your house neighbors Mother Nature, do you really think you can outdo the queen over time? Rather than insert a plethora of genus against a completely natural backdrop, I usually prefer to add back to the natural landscape, in keeping with what is already there. We keep a full stock of native ferns and wild flowers on hand for this purpose. Proof is in the pudding – the next time you are in the woods, take a close look at the splendor and detail that nature has so randomly placed before your very eyes. I think that if you have the pleasure of bordering the beauty of what was placed on this earth naturally, it’s nice to compliment with the same intricate simplicity. Patios. The concept of having a patio that you step down to from your is a common idea, but the concept of lifting the patio to the height of your deck or elevated over your landscape is a simple move that transforms your outdoor space into something distinctive and different. It is not that difficult to do and it creates a very unique outdoor room. As long as we don’t exceed 30 inches from the top of the patio to the ground, at which point code requires a railing or wall, I typically opt to NOT have anything between you and sweet Mother Nature other than O2 laced with a little CO2. Consider it an infinity deck where the patio just reached out into the great yonder. If you are at ground level next to your house and are thinking of adding in a patio, consider raising it just 14 inches – it’s a simple move that can drastically alter your perspective.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, I am tired all the time and I think I have hypothyroidism. What do you think? I see lots of folks who think there is something medically wrong with them because they are tired. Often, when I hear about their life and schedule, it is no wonder they can’t keep their eyes open! They are up with the kids early, running around all day, working, playing, watching TV, exercising or not, shopping, and not sleeping a whole lot. I certainly fall into a pattern like this some days too- “well if I stay up a little later tonight I will get it done...” What to do about that I don’t know, but it is certainly clear that most of the time people who are tired have a good reason to be that way. But, there are some people who have medical reasons to feel run down, tired, sleepy, or out of energy. Anemia, sleep apnea, depression, and hypothyroidism are some of the possible causes. I think the most common thing people think of when they consider whether they have a medical cause for feeling run down is hypothyroidism. The thyroid is a gland
A member of Sentara Healthcare.
at the bottom of the neck in the front that makes thyroid hormone. Thyroid helps to control all kinds of things like: heat and cold tolerance, mood, alertness, hydration, hair and nail health, muscle strength, and weight management. If the thyroid quits working (which can happen for a variety of reasons such as infection or a person’s own immune system destroying the thyroid gland) then all of those systems the thyroid controls can go haywire. Generally people become tired, down, constipated, cold sensitive, achy, and they gain weight. A blood test is usually all that is needed to diagnose the problem. Once found, it is fairly easy to treat by using medicine to replace the missing thyroid hormone. So, if you have several of the above symptoms, and can’t think of a good reason in your lifestyle to cause them, it probably is worth talking with your doctor about it to see if the testing is warranted for you. CORE CIRCUIT TRAINING
By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Everything in Moderation It is hard to be a minimalist from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. We are bombarded constantly with radio, TV, internet ads and promotions for sales, gimmicks, gadgets and more. As I write this sitting in the Mall in early November, the Christmas decorations are already up. It is easy to get wrapped up in the buy in of Christmas. The same sort of thing tends to happen with food, drink and social gatherings. Before we know it, January first is here and we have gained ten pounds without even blinking. For many, this is an annual and lifelong conundrum. Nearly everyone, from your mother to gurus, has said it, “Everything in moderation.” Moderation is not a novel concept but it is a worthy mindset to adopt. It involves selfrestraint which is an extraordinarily difficult concept in our culture. We want it all right now. And it can’t get to us fast enough whether it is the fast food we ordered or the internet connection. Moderation involves paying attention to exactly how much
we have eaten and to slow down to enjoy each bite. A tool that keeps many things in focus is exercise. It relieves emotional stress, it keeps us centered and it reduces the Holiday gain. Yet, exercise is the very aspect of our health that gets tossed aside during the Holidays. Then you have to start the challenge all over again in January to get back in shape. So, as we enter this wonderful season of giving, try a few new traditions. • For every dessert you desire, donate a dollar to a worthy cause that you wish to support. • Exercise three to five days a week for thirty minutes and place a dollar in a jar for each time you exercise so you can purchase a gift for yourself at Christmas. • Give the gift of health to a loved one. (fitness, massage, personal training gift certificates) • Drink more water and less sugar water (sodas contain eight teaspoons of sugar in each can).
