thepublishers While some of us may be camping outside the big box stores for Black Friday deals, the kids have already started camping out in the living room anticipating the ol’ man’s arrival. It had dawned on Adam the other day as we were firing up the wood stove in the kitchen, that Santa mustn’t go down that chimney. “It’s too hot and he’ll get burned,” he warned. “Adam burned himself three times today, mummy,” Peyton added. This girl may have a future in surveillance. “Santa has to come down the other chimney and Peyton and I can sleep there.” When the kids’ conversations grow so hushed that it’s hard for parental ears to tune in, Christmas eve logistics must be what they’re discussing. Earlier that day, Adam told me the two toys he wished to receive. “You can write them in a letter to Santa,” I told him. I saw my son’s heart sink for a minute. “But I cannot write him a letter! You can write the letter,” he insisted. “Sweetheart, I can help you write it. And we can take our time,” I assured him.

My son the lefty perfectionist is worried Christmas will be destroyed if he doesn’t pen a legible note to Santa. But Peyton, who was gripping a pencil correctly out of the womb, wasn’t phased. “Mummy, we can take a picture of Rebecca Rabbit and give it to Santa!” My son wants two presents and his sister wants one. I’ll double Peyton’s loot since the asymmetry would drive her brother bananas. The tree. There’s one here on the farm I’ve had my eye on. The other day when Tommy came home, Adam ran outside barefoot in the cold over to the field where it sits along a fence line. Maybe Santa will stuff stockings in their stockings this year. Merry Christmas! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

DECEMBER 2014
basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Light I end my year-long attempt to associate each month with a special virtue or attribute with December’s Light. Many centuries ago, light found its way into cold December nights as the fear of steadily shortening days was quelled just after the Winter Solstice. Celebrations involving fire and light flourished. But there is light always and everywhere: the first rays of dawn streak a gray sky with quiet wonder; that same sun colours the dusk sky in shades of rose and gold before nightfall. There is light reflected off the moon or in a drop of rain. But the greatest light may well be that which dwells within us all— we see its evidence through sparkling eyes, or feel it in an act of kindness. Now my task is to apply this analogy to wine. I could cheat and simply hold a glass before the flickering flame. But all living things give off a light: the plants, the rocks, the scrumptious meal you just fixed. And wine, very much alive, is no different. Each bottle has its own energy or “chi”. My choice for December
is: Domaine Josmeyer, “Fleur de Lotus”– estate, founded in 1854, converted to bio-dynamic viticulture in 2000 and is rated one of the top five best estates in Alsace with Zind- Humbrecht, Marcel Deiss, and Weinbach. A patriarchal operation for years, Josmeyer now has the beautiful and young additions of Isabelle and Céline Meyer on board. Fleur de Lotus is an ethereal, dry blend of Auxerrois (for body), Gewurtztraminer (for spice and “fat”) and Riesling (for acidity and longevity) that smells of the eponymous lotus flowers and tastes of zesty orange blossoms. The name is also appropriate because the lotus flower, symbol of wisdom and purity in Asia, emphasizes the harmony of Alsatian wines with Asiatic gastronomy. In addition to Asian cuisine, Fleur de Lotus willpair well with turkey or ham* and a wide range of sides. So raise a glass before the candlelight, looking into each other’s eyes, and notice the light within. $22 *This holiday season, help everyone: please choose local and humanely raised meats.

Kathy Mullins, owner of A Better Way Farm in Waynesboro, hand watches over her herd of 56 goats in a neighbor’s rented pasture. She says the time she spends watching her herd in the morning is her equivelant of taking time for a cup of coffee and reading the morning paper.
Five years ago, Kathy Mullins left her high-paying work-from-home computer programming job. On purpose. “Although by the American standard I would be considered living in poverty, I don’t feel poor. I feel like my life is so rich,” said Kathy, who now owns and operates A Better Way Goat and Dairy Farm.
“Life is more to me than what my bank account says.” 10

These days, Kathy spends her days (her pretty long days, which last from 4:45 a.m. to whenever it gets dark) outside on her farm and with her goats. She leads a minimalist lifestyle, grows almost everything she eats, and doesn’t miss sitting behind a computer at all - though she and her smartphone have a pretty great relationship: she recently built a huge extension onto of her barn watching YouTube with one eye and her hammer with the other. That big expansion was needed due to Kathy’s herd of 56 goats… and the 60 or 70 baby goats she has on the way. Goats are one of the newer aspects of Kathy’s life. Several years ago, Kathy bought a few goats to help maintain her 5 acres and she fell in love.

“It’s just a joy ... I feel like I don’t have a job. I feel like I just do fun stuff every day and I don’t feel like I’m working.”
“I love each and every one of them,” she said of her furry companions, each of which has a name. “If you worked with the same 56 people wouldn’t you learn their names? They have their own little personalities. I wouldn’t even call them pets, they’re my babies! I hug and kiss on them, but they’re income producing. They’re a solid part of my business.” Kathy uses her goats’ milk (52 of the 56 are female) to produce dairy products like cheese, ice cream, and even soaps, but one of A Better Way’s most unique offerings is the herdshare program. Shareholders buy into the herdshare and in addition to supporting local

agriculture, they get fresh raw milk straight from the farm. And those 60 to 70 babies on their way? Most of them will be up for sale this spring, too. Even though Kathy is spending more time working her farm than she used to spend programming computers - sometimes in the summer she can be outside in the fields and barns for upwards of 14 hours - she wouldn’t trade it for the world. “It’s just a joy,” she said. “I feel like I don’t have a job. I feel like I just do fun stuff every day and I don’t feel like I’m working. If I had a ‘real’ job, this is what I would do when I wasn’t working!”
Even though she doesn’t make a ton of money dairy farming, Kathy says her minimalist lifestyle allows her to live happily. Her smartphone is her only internet connection and when she needs something done - like a new barn addition or a fence around the yard - she learns how to do it and does it herself whenever possible. “You just cannot convince me that there’s something I cannot do,” she said. She keeps bees for honey and goats for milk. She grows her own fruits and veggies (canning or selling what she can’t eat) and though she sometimes eats a little bit of chicken, she uses her 30-some-odd chickens primarily for their eggs, most days eating up 6 per day. She barters for some things, like deer meat, and only goes to the grocery store for rice and spices.

Brady S. Nicks Attorney-at-Law,
Kathy has friends who called her crazy for leaving a good job with good benefits that let her work from home. And right in the middle of a recession, no less. But today she owns her days and she’s happy, which she says is the most important thing. “I really like getting up early and going out there and milking the animals,” said Kathy, describing the favorite part of her long days in her new life. “It’s very quiet and peaceful and I have the time to unwind and wake up. I spend individual time with each animal, I let my geese out and I greet all my animals just as the sun is rising. It’s such a beautiful way to start every single day and I enjoy the glory that every day brings and just knowing that I own it. Just to know that this is my day and I can whatever I want with it.” BRL

OYSTERS & WINE
14
Blue Ridge LIFE
DECEMBER 2014
The Croxtons were at a crossroads. Dormant since the 1990s, the family oyster business had a state land lease on the Middle Peninsula that was about to run out. Even though the family patriarch had passed away, cousins Travis and Ryan Croxton weren’t ready to give up. “In normal circumstances, we would have let them expire, but we got super nostalgic, so we decided we wanted to keep them,” said Ryan, who owns and operates Rappahannock River Oyster Company, with Travis. “At that point, we had no idea what to do, so we just started Googling it. We did a lot of research to find out what the state of the [Chesapeake] Bay was and how oysters had been so demolished as an industry. It was really a challenge to revive something.”
Patterning their business after the once-thriving and now revived Virginia wine community (one of their restaurant is even called Merroir, a play on the oft-used wine term terroir), one of the first things they looked for was a winery to work with. Since the cousins have known Sarah and Tim Gorman since college, their family winery, Cardinal Point was a natural starting point. “The event was going to be – and the first year, it was – our Valentine’s Day event, because oysters are an aphrodisiac,” remembers Sarah. “We had a very successful first time out, but when we did the second time on Valentine’s Day, it snowed ... as it is wont to do.” continued on page 17

We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that cause harm to your skin & eyes, not to mention destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They are made for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They eliminate 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. These new films are not dark, they don’t bubble or fade, & they will not distort your views. In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the white light in the sun just a little bit our 3M™ window tinting allows for more crisp high definition views compared to your current windows. 3M™ Window Films installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting come with a lifetime warranty. So after the mess of having to reschedule their second annual Oyster Festival, Cardinal Point moved the event to the fall. This year the festival (which took place on Nov. 15 and 16) featured the chef from Merroir and some of his seafood masterpieces. “Chef Pete has a famous crabcake that he does and then also the Stuffin’ Muffin, basically an oyster stuffing done in a patty with gravy on top. It’s just totally a not-healthy, gloriously sinful, kind of thing,” said Ryan, adding that the dish was featured in the New York Times. “The crabcake has gotten tons of press as well. It has very little filler. It’s an anomaly of science how it stays together.” Though food (and chocolate) pairing is beyond popular, Sarah is proud not only that Cardinal Point is doing something a little different with the oysters, but also encouraging the Croxtons and other local businesses like their own.
“We love their products and we love the fact that [the festival] has remained true to its roots: a celebration of their oysters and our wines. That’s really how we try to celebrate,” she said, adding that the perk of daylong oysters definitely isn’t overlooked. “Well, they’re delicious,” she said. “There’s always the joke that whoever ate the first oyster was a brave person because of how they look, but they’re delicious. And they’re so good for the environment.” Sarah, who personally favors a pairing of the oysters with Cardinal Point’s A6, said she really enjoys working with Ryan and Travis, who she says are putting the aquaculture community in Virginia back on track, and the cousins definitely agree. “It is always a great pairing to be able to do something with a winery,” said Ryan. “Not just literally pairing the wine with the oyster, but pairing the industries.” BRL

Home inspection tips for prospective purchasers
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
When you buy a home you want to picture blue skies and rainbows and not the dark cloud of problems and repairs to rain on your parade. Hence, a home inspection is highly recommended. As discussed in a previous real estate column, the home inspection protects the seller because it establishes the actual condition of the property at the time of sale, thus reducing post-closing disputes regarding the property condition. It is also a great tool for prospective home purchasers because it can give reassurance that the home is structurally sound OR it can alert the prospective homeowner of possible defects or deficiencies. Here are a few tips that can help a homebuyer navigate through the home inspection period. Choose to inspect; unless you have construction expertise, you should have a home inspection. The Virginia Association of Realtors
(VAR) purchase contract and inspection addendum provide the buyer with an opportunity to indicate that you desire or waive the home inspection. *Should the buyer choose NOT to inspect, the seller warrants (per the VAR purchase contract) that all appliances, heating and cooling equipment, plumbing and electrical systems will be in working condition at the time of settlement. Get a referral; just as agents are not all created equal, neither are home inspectors. Your best option is to ask your agent, friends, or family for a referral. A satisfied customer of an inspector can be a good indicator of your future satisfaction. Pay and save; Unless the home is larger than average, or you tack on additional services such as a radon test, the inspection fee will be around $300-400. Inspectors are paid at the time of service; the upfront cost is minimal when you consider that it can save you from
Marlo Allen
inheriting a costly issue that even the seller may not know about. Understand the scope; the inspection may include, but not be limited to, inspections of the structure, foundation, roof, flooring, HVAC systems, electrical system, plumbing system, appliances, exterior, drainage, windows, lead-based paint, radon, etc… Meet the timeline; a 10-14 day inspection period is typical. Unless you have been granted an extension, you must abide by your contract time frame in terms of actually conducting the inspection and providing a repair report/request to the seller. Once the inspection period expires, the buyer’s right to terminate the contract due to the inspection or ask for seller paid repairs and/or credits also expires. Don’t nit-pick! Prioritize the deficiencies. Peppering the request with minor items may upset or overwhelm the seller and hence cause
434-996-3525
Forget Santa; Call Marlo!
the seller to overlook the items that are most important to you. Focus on repair items that could be most costly or that may compromise the health and safety of the occupants and/or structure. Negotiate; You can ask for a repair to be made, but the seller is not under any obligation to fix it. However, if the seller is not willing to make the repairs as requested, the buyer is able to terminate the contract OR accept the seller’s offer of repairs/ repair credit (if any) and proceed to settlement. Following these tips will help you know exactly what you may be buying!

ADVERTORIAL
Leaving a Legacy By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC
Have you ever heard that you should give your house to your kids to protect it from the cost of a nursing home? If the thought concerns you that you may someday lose your home or your savings because you need long-term care or nursing home care, you should know your options. Contrary to what you may have heard, you do NOT have to give your house or other assets to your children to protect them – there are other legal options available. Long-term care planning is the process of arranging your assets in a way that protects some or all of your assets from the devastating cost of long-term care or nursing home care. Planning of this kind will often involve the use of a special type of deed, an irrevocable trust, or maybe long-term care insurance. This type of planning is most effective when it’s done before any problems arise. The ideal time to start planning for asset protection is at least five years before nursing home care might become a serious concern. An irrevocable trust may be the solution many are seeking. Outside of gifting assets to individuals, setting up an irrevocable trust is often the most effective option to protect assets. After five years, assets funded to a properly drafted and managed irrevocable trust will be considered unavailable if a nursing home stay is required. These assets are then preserved for a spouse or loved ones. An irrevocable trust can be structured so the Trustmaker can act as the Trustee, meaning the person creating the trust can still have control over the assets in the trust. For example, if real estate is held in an irrevocable trust, the person setting up the trust can maintain full control over the property. The only limitation on the Trustmaker is that the real property, or the proceeds from the sale of the real property, cannot be distributed out of the trust directly to the Trustmaker. This limitation is what provides the protection. Transferring assets into an irrevocable trust is usually preferable over gifting assets directly to loved ones. When assets are gifted directly to children or other loved ones, you lose the control over those assets. Gifting the property directly to the children also subjects the assets to the child’s creditors, lawsuits, or if the child goes through a divorce, the child’s divorce settlement. With an irrevocable trust, you can maintain control of the assets and the property is not subject to the liabilities of the children. Since it is a trust, an irrevocable trust can also act as an estate planning tool. Within the context of a larger estate plan, this helps to avoid probate issues, saving after-death costs and hassles for loved ones. Long-term care insurance is another great way to protect assets, but most policies do not cover the full cost of care and usually have a short period of coverage. Sadly, not everyone can qualify for a long-term care insurance policy and an irrevocable trust or other arrangement may be the only alternative. Asset protection planning is all about taking your legacy and making responsible, informed decisions on the best planning procedures to meet your goals. To protect your legacy for the next generation, consider planning today to protect your assets.

Blue Haven 151 Farm and B&B is Nelson County’s newest destination place in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains! Close to Wintergreen Ski Resort, local wineries, breweries, hiking and biking trails, Blue Haven offers year round B&B accommodations welcoming leaf peepers, snow bunnies, vintage camper enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, artists, writers, porch sitters and everyone in between!
With a relaxed energy, Tim welcomed each child warmly to sit before him. The younger ones, of course, had time sitting still and staring blankly forward… sorry guys, Tim didn’t bring a TV with him, instead he offered a photo album of his own imagines to entertain the children. During the afternoon of appointments it seemed that the boys were less inclined to sit, while the little girls had no problem staying on task. With the appropriate pieces of paper in hand and the child before him, Tim wasted no time getting down to business. Hands expertly guiding the sharp scissor blades across the thin surface. If that’s not amazing enough, Tim asked the children questions to keep them engaged while he worked. And just like that Tim finished the child’s silhouette, matting it to crisp card stock. BRL

On the morning of November 11, a day when Vietnam War vet Charles “Strawberry” Goodwin was already on the minds of those who love him most, the smokehouse behind the Blue Ridge Pig caught fire during a routine cleaning. News of the blaze spread just as quickly and customers almost immediately began reaching out. “Well, I burned it out yesterday, like I usually do three or four times a year. It’s like a chimney fire, we do it on purpose, it’s supposed to be a controlled burn, and everything went perfectly,” Strawberry explains on the day of the incident. “This morning I came in like I always do, opened the doors so it’ll cool down, I looked in there, didn’t see anything. So I left and came inside to call my wife Mary, tell her everything had gone smoothly.
“Five minutes later, Terry came in screaming that the smokehouse was on fire.”

A grease-spot, unseen during Strawberry’s inspection, caught fire and set the walls around it ablaze. Friends from neighboring businesses heard the explosion and rushed to help tame the flames. It was because of this quick action that Straw was able to keep the fire at a manageable state before the Wintergreen Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene. Although the walls and ceiling needed replacing, the chimney and the smoker itself were still intact, along with what’s most important: Mr. Goodwin himself. In the early years of this business, the smokehouse experienced two similarly unintentional fires. The first, occurring in 1990 was the worst of its kind, burning not only the building, but also Strawberry who was inside the smokehouse at the time of the grease-pocket explosion. Badly injured, he was hospitalized for almost two weeks while doctors performed grafting to a large portion of his body. A lightning strike sparked the second fire, and luckily no one was inside.

Also born in 1988, I was raised within those business card covered walls with my Poppop Straw as a role model. He’ll be the first to proudly tell you that I took naps on the shelf beneath the cash register and often had lunch with the customers, or “ton-tons” as I called them. I love thinking back to all the times I was attached to his side, watching him pull apart those pork butts fresh out of the smoker, sneaking me pieces for a special treat. That smoky meat was like candy, and I ate it greedily as fast as he could pull it. The smoke that has surrounded him for years has soaked into his clothes, his hair, his skin and his soul, giving him a permanent scent of hickory smoke and meat. A scent I’ve come to associate with his big bear hugs and his scruffy beard which he deliberately brushes over your face as he pulls you tighter. I grew up looking at his burnt hands and arms thinking they resembled raw chicken skin, unaware at the time how he came to earn those scars. On the evening of the most recent fire, my older sister cared for Straw and made him supper as he recounted the day’s events. Later, she shared her feelings through the interweb. Turns out, I’m not the only writer in the family. “This man is incredible. He is the guy who helps out his buddies with no expectations of return favors. He feeds those who are starving, and is eternally cheerful, even tonight. Everyone loves him, everyone knows that. What you don’t know is that he wakes up between 2 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day to bring you the world’s best barbecue. He does this alone. There is no second (or third) shift. It’s all him. This morning, Grandpa had been cleaning out the smokehouse when he realized he needed to make a phone call. While he was inside the restaurant on the phone, there was an explosion and subsequent fire in the smokehouse. I have to believe that today, the day that we remember and are thankful for those who serve and have served our country, was not this veteran’s day to die.” BRL

The Stonewall Brigade Band performs their Christmas concert at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Staunton, Monday Dec.16, 2013.
What do a music-teacher-turnedbusinessman, an electrical-engineerturned-patent-lawyer, a Greenbrier golf pro, a retired Marine, a college professor, three attorneys, a couple of physicians, a handful of teachers and educators, a retired electrician, and a bunch of high schoolers have in common? They’re all members of the oldest continuously performing community bands in the nation, the Stonewall Brigade Band. When the band started in 1855, there were scarcely more than a dozen performing members, but today the band (which was once General “Stonewall” Jackson’s staff band and marched in six presidential inaugural parades) boasts 70 to 80 playing members ranging in age from 14 to 84. “We’re pretty good; we sound like a band from a small college,” said the band’s director of 39 years, Bob Moody (he’s that music-teacherturned-businessman and happens to be a descendent of one of the band’s original members). “The thing that sets us apart is that we play 170 to 180 different pieces of music a year.” Most people see the Stonewall Brigade Band during the Summer Concert Series at Gypsy Hill Park (on the bandstand that Bob helped

get built in the mid-70s). The band starts rehearsing for their (free!) weekly summer concerts in January and makes a point to give the 400 or so audience members something fresh each week. And it’s a great recruiting method, too. “After Seminary, I ended up here and shared with people that I love music and they told me to go to Gypsy Hill Park and I did,” said 26-year-old Taylor Mertins, a pastor and resident drum kit player. “I sent [Bob] a resume of the groups I’ve played in and he wrote back and said, ‘Just show up.’ In September [of last year] I went to my first band practice and I’ve been voted in as a lifetime member.” Flautist Christine Wood remembers hearing drum cadences in the park before her son was born when she was new to the area. She approached Bob to ask what was going on. “He asked me if I played and I said, ‘Gosh! A million years ago!’ and he asked me to join them,” she said. Now 15 years later, Christine and her 16-year-old son, a trumpet player, are both performing in the weekly summer concerts and this month’s Christmas concert fundraiser. continued on page 40

First Impressions Turning off a state road and approaching a residence, there is a clear image that a guest will immediately get of your home. This image, the notorious ‘first impression,’ often times sets the tone of the visit and can create a sense of expectation especially when a potential sale is involved. The eyes and associated interest of a guest can be controlled by a number of factors including the location and flow of the driveway in relation to the residence, the presence of plantings both around the home and the drive and hardscapes that both welcome people and frame the home. Since the driveway is mandatory and these other options are, well, optional, the approach to your home needs to be more than ‘getting from point A to point B’ but an opportunity to show off that architecture that you will be paying on for the next 15-30 years. Without a question, a poorly designed drive can absolutely ruin an impression of a home. I recall a home where the approach put a guest in the middle of the garage and due to decades of native fauna, ones eyes really had that focus from the state maintained street all the way to the back door. Considering the front of the house was all the ‘eye candy’ necessary, the fix was to literally move the drive about 50 feet up the street, add some stonework and a strategically placed tree (to cover one side of the garage) and ‘Voila!,’ a completely overhauled first impression that really emphasized a wonderful porch and associated stonework. When drives serve both the front and back door, always keep in mind that the drive that is the most direct route and requires the least amount of turning will become the main entrance just by default – even if your guest arrives at your garage to the side of the house. Therefore the front entrance should consist of long
flowing curves (best) with the road that serves the “back door” turning off of the main curve – often times at slightly harder angles that are not within the flow of this main curve. Keep in mind that when a circle drive is the objective, the right-hand approach (right turn) is typically the one that most guests will take when offered the two turns at the top of the circle – allowing the passenger, instead of the driver, to step out of the car at the front entrance. For this reason, the main curve of the drive needs to naturally flow right into this circle drive where the exit is just a touch of a turn. Plantings and stonework can also aid in labeling the correct drive to take when multiple options exist. Stone columns at the neck of one driveway where multiple options exists typically denotes the main entrance. We have also installed intermittent stone pillars with lights on them denoting an approach to the correct side of the house. The same is typically true of an allee or row of trees alongside a drive offering a clear distinction as to where a guest should continue to drive since this ‘common thread’ of plants does not stop until you arrive at the front door or has adequately moved one in the general direction of the desired entrance. It is also a nice design practice to have trees that will grow to over 25 feet tall to mask a particular wing of the house from the road, thereby clearly showing off the main entrance. Whichever method you choose, consider these plantings, stonework and other options as mere window dressing in comparison to an skillfully and creatively laid-out, beautifully curved driveway that puts your guests right where you want them – front center. Alas, it is YOUR house and perhaps a lot of YOUR design – take that first impression all the way to the bank.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My hands go numb and my wrist hurts! Do I have carpel tunnel syndrome? The carpel tunnel is a small opening between the wrist bones (the “carpel” bones) and a tough piece of ligament that holds the bones together. Through that opening travels a whole bunch of tendons and one of the big nerves that goes to the hand. The area sees a lot of action—every time you move your wrist or fingers things are sliding in and out of the carpel tunnel. So, you can imagine that the nerve or tendons there can get rubbed and irritated or inflamed pretty easily. Any repetitive use of the hands and fingers can lead to carpel tunnel, such as typing or manual labor. But, you don’t have to do those kinds of things to be plagued with this disease; it can just happen for fun (not much fun). When the area becomes inflamed, you might feel pain in the hand or wrist. The nerve that gets affected works on the thumb, ring, and middle fingers. So, often there is numbness in that area. But, sometimes the
numbness overtakes the entire hand or even leaves the hand and heads for the elbow. It is often worse at night or in the morning because we have a natural tendency to bend our wrists as we sleep which closes off and makes smaller the already tight carpel tunnel. So, if you’ve got it, what do you do? Wrist splints can help quite a bit. They keep you from bending the wrist so you don’t compress the carpel tunnel and make things worse. That allows the area to heal. A visit to your doctor might land you some drugs to try in the form of anti-inflammatories (such as ibuprofen or much more potent corticosteroids). Splinting will probably be recommended. Sometimes, if things get bad enough, a steroid shot can be a big help. Finally, in some cases it takes surgery to open up the carpel tunnel to give all of those crowded nerves and tendons room to move. Hope this helps! theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center The Holiday Phenomena The Holiday Phenomena or “THP.” I’m coining a new acronym because it happens so often. Each season starting a week before Thanksgiving and ending after the New Year, a large part of the population puts their fitness program on hold. There are many reasons: too busy, family arriving, cleaning, shopping, food preparations and more. The Holidays consume us. January first arrives; you have added weight, are tired and sluggish. That’s when you realize you should start exercising again. Because you missed several weeks, you have to start over and it takes more effort and energy. Is it possible to avoid THP this year so you start 2015 on the upswing instead of the up and down cycle of fitness? Much of the holiday celebration revolves around meals. As someone who enjoys socialization and eating, this is a special part of the holiday. My family and friends enjoy cooking and trying new recipes together. So, per-
haps trying new “lighter” versions of the traditional meals or creating new food traditions? There are many great meals to try; just searching on the internet will give you more than enough recipes. There is another place where we can share quality time with family and friends. I’ve had some great conversations walking, hiking, running or exercising with family and friends. Invite them to an exercise class, to a yoga class or set up a group personal training session together. It’s fun, healthy and relieves stress. Fitting in exercise will give you more energy this season. With each advancing year, it becomes harder to get fit, stay fit and it takes longer. So, this year, avoid THP and letting the holidays consume you. Stick with the program or get started on one. The time is now. Agnes F.
