without blinds ...

... or fading.

In the top photo you are looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through 3M™ Prestige 40 window tinting. By softening the glare just a little bit, adding our 3M™ window tinting to your current windows will give you more crisp high definition views. Sunlight emits harmful UV & Infrared rays into your home that destroys your hardwood floors, furniture, & artwork. In addition, these rays also cause serious harm to your skin and eyes. The sun also brings in excessive heat & glare making your home inefficient & uncomfortable. Our 3M™ window tinting is a sun filter. We use air & water filters in our homes for our health & quality of life. They keep allergens & chemicals out of the air we breathe & water we drink. If this is so important to us, then why aren’t we filtering the sun coming through our windows? Blinds, curtains, or lowE windows ARE NOT sun filters. They work well for nighttime privacy, insulating, & interior design. 3M™ has invented a new line of window tinting that is the proper sun filter. They filter 99.9% of UV & 97% of infrared rays while allowing an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF PURIFIED SUNLIGHT into your home. This new tinting is not dark, won’t bubble or fade, and will literally improve the quality of your views. Installed locally by Clear View Window Tinting, they come with a lifetime warranty. thepublishers As I write this, the wood stove is roaring, my throat is angry, and the sun is taking its time to rise over the trees. One of those trees is going to be in our parlor pretty soon. “It’s not the parlor. It’s the Christmas room!” Adam is quick to point out. He is right. The room – part of the home’s original 1876 construction – has finally been given a face lift. Gone is the thick layer of blood red carpeting that preserved the gleaming heart pine floors for the last few decades. And even though the tree doesn’t stay up long, for the other 11 months of the year, the kids refer to this room as the Christmas room. Battling the sniffles and wearing her Santa pajamas that came out after the first frost, a raspy-voiced Peyton shuffles to the kitchen table with Pinky to dive into her new Paw Patrol coloring book. Adam has his iPad opened up to the toy he wants this year. “Deer Santa,” he writes. “May I have a Paw Patrol lookout playset?” Normally, I’d pipe up and offer a spelling correction but I’m so impressed by his handwriting (it hasn’t been easy for this lefty) and his determination to communicate to the bearded guy that I ignore it. “Is there anything else you’d like

to say to Santa?” I ask Adam. He shakes his head. “Maybe ask him how Mrs. Claus is doing or the reindeers?” I suggest. After considering what I said, he picked up his pencil. And a little car please. After helping him spell “Sincerely,” Adam signed his name below it. “Adam, you’re getting a lookout playset and I can get a lookout playset!” Peyton declares. “But he has to come down the chimney first and he can’t break the toys,” Adam warned. “And we won’t have the fireplace going in the parlor so he doesn’t burn himself,” I added. “The Christmas room!” they said. Indeed. Merry Christmas! Yvette and Tommy Stafford DECEMBER 2015 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Wine in celebration, Pineau & Pinot I remember when I was at that age when you are not quite sure whether or not to believe in Santa Claus. I think I was 15 or 16. I went to ask my grandmother, Nanny, for the truth because I knew she would tell me the right story. I asked her, “Nanny, is there really a Santa Claus?” And her answer has stayed with me to this day. She told me that there really is a Santa Claus. Not a man with a white beard and a red suit, but Santa is the spirit of giving that comes around every Christmas. I believe Nanny was right. I do feel that every year, around Christmas time, people are a little friendlier, kinder, more patient and more giving. So whether you celebrate Christmas, the Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or just rampant consumerism, with multiple bottles of wine from Basic Necessities, I hope that Santa’s spirit visits you. This year, give the gift of yourself and your time, and if all else fails, give a bottle of wine. I offer some favourite pairings for festive occasions. Aperitif: Paul Marie Pineau de Charentes Blanc “JEP”- Here’s the

perfect holiday aperitif, but don’t tell that to the young and trendy French; it’s what their uncool grandparents in the country drink. Pineau des Charentes, or Pineau, as it’s called in France (and pronounced the same as “pinot” in Pinot Noir) is a sweet, strong Vin de Liqueur of the Cognac region. Though not well known outside of France, it entices those who discover it, uncool or not. And while Pineau can be used as a dessert wine, I find it better pre-dinner, when it stimulates appetite and gastric juices. Pour some, chilled, into a sherry glass and voilà... aperitif nirvana. Notes of caramelized apple, Assam tea and honey. Pineau will keep in the fridge for a month or so. $59.99 The traditional meal of roasted meat and many sides: If you could only serve one wine, opt for something light with excellent acidity. For red, a good Pinot Noir can cross many culinary boundaries. Medici Pinot Noir, 2009 - We can’t keep this in stock. From Oregon’s Willamette Valley, it tastes somewhere between the earthy terroir of a Burgundy and the soft fruit of the Pacific Northwest. $29.99

The vegetarian meal: When matching root veggies or leafy greens, both reds and whites work. For white, Chenin Blanc (also, and confusingly, sometimes called Pineau) makes a great choice and has the acidity to pair well with a multitude of flavours. Clos du Papillon, Savennières, 2009 – Notes of quince, orange and there’s an umami taste, which develops further when paired with complementary foods (sautéed chanterelles, risotto). $34.99 The sure bet for all: Hofgut Falkenstein, feinherb, Riesling, (Saar) 2014 – Riesling from the Mosel and its even cooler tributaries, the Saar and Ruwer, is one of the world’s most distinctive and least imitable wines. Because of its relative low alcohol and fruity acidity, Riesling is a great hero to food, actually pairing better with rich meat dishes than jammy, fruit-driven reds, and reaching sublime heights with oysters and fish. The Falkenstein Rieslings’ natural spritzig (effervescence) makes them delicious with or without food, too. Piercing, clean, pure, with aromas of lotus, lime and the slate on which it was grown. $24.99

Sophie Oglivie brushes Lilly before going for a ride at Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue in Afton. Oglivie volunteers at the rescue once a week. Lilly came to the rescue in the spring as an owner surrender which is why she’s able to be ridden.

continued from page 11

It was dark by the time Maya Proulx arrived at Peaceable Farms in Orange County and what she found was a nightmare. The smell hit her first. “The barn smelled like death,” she said. Using a flashlight, she entered the barn where several horses were being kept. “Everywhere the light shone, you would see another walking skeleton standing there looking at you.” With seven years of experience in rescuing horses and donkeys, Proulx said nothing could have prepared her for what she saw. “I have never seen anything that awful in my life.” Outside the barn, dead horses were being loaded into a dumpster to be removed from the property. Several more were clinging to life. Seven were identified as “Red Tag” cases, meaning the veterinarians had determined they were so critical they needed to be removed immediately or they might not survive the night. Those seven were loaded onto trailers and taken to Proulx’s horse rescue farm, Hope’s Legacy, in Afton. Proulx’s love for horses inspired her to found the equine rescue farm in 2008. The first year, she cared for one horse. Now she has a few dozen. Proulx said sometimes animal control will call and ask her to take in a horse that’s been neglected. Other times, someone asks her to take their horse because they are no longer able to care for it financially. Proulx said she has seen some sad cases, but the sheer magnitude of neglect in this one has been overwhelming. After the first night of the rescue, Proulx returned to Peaceable Farms the next morning to collect more horses. In the daylight, she noticed the pastures were just dirt and weeds. The stalls had eight inches of manure. “Just nasty, filthy stalls,” Proulx said. “It was really bad.”

12

Blue Ridge LIFE

DECEMBER 2015

Proulx and several other horse rescue groups lined up trailers in the driveway and took turns loading horses. “We pulled one trailer at a time up. Whoever’s trailer it was would say this trailer is going to Hope’s Legacy, we can take four horses. The next four horses we caught would get loaded on the trailer and that trailer would leave for whatever foster home it was going to. The next trailer would pull up and say we can take six,” Proulx said. “It was a heck of a process, that’s for sure.” In all, 81 horses and donkeys were rescued from Peaceable Farms over two days in late October. It was one of the largest animal rescue missions central Virginia had ever seen. Working with the Orange County sheriff’s department and animal control, 29 of those rescued horses were taken to Hope’s Legacy. 25 of those of those 29 are still living. Romeo was one of the horses considered a “red tag” case that first night. Even in his terrible condition, Romeo was a charmer and quickly became a favorite at Hope’s Legacy, endearing himself with the volunteers by licking their faces. With all brown hair, volunteers styled him up with a purple plaid blanket. But after a few days on the farm, one morning he couldn’t get up in his stall. “Six people tried to lift him up for over an hour but we couldn’t bring him to his feet,” said Linda Haschart, a volunteer at Hope’s Legacy. “He just had nothing left.” Romeo had to be put down. He was one of three horses rescued from Peaceable Farms that didn’t make it. “He really stole a piece of my heart and it was tough,” Haschart said. Other horses, like Raisin who refused to drink water at first, are now thriving. “You’re going hey, did anyone fill this bucket?” said Haschart. “They are just diving into the water buckets.”

Maya Parker and Kiki Harris empty a tub of manure. The work has been non-stop since executive director Maya Proulx (below), took in 21 horses following a raid at a farm in Orange County.

Proulx swears some of the horses have already started putting on weight. But its going to be a long road to recovery. The horses must adhere to a strict diet, because like the old adage goes, too much too soon can be a bad thing. “It’s hard because when you see them in that condition you really just want to start feeding them and you can’t because it can cause more problems like organ failure if you do to much to quickly,” Proulx said. Because they were starved for so long, all the bacteria and enzymes in the digestive tract died. To help rebuild the whole digestive system, Proulx said the horses are given several small meals throughout the day with no sugars, to prevent throwing off their electrolytes. continued on page 14

Volunteer Linda Haschart walks Goose, while executive director Maya Proulx walks Raisan at Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue. The two horses were among 21 animals rescued from a farm in Orange County in mid-October. Meanwhile Taylor Thomas, one of the organization’s younger volunteers, hops over a fence after feeding two miniature horses living on the farm prior to the recent rescue. For information on how to help, visit HopesLegacy.com.

continued from page 13

The horses being able to eat and drink has led to a new problem. “They are making such messy stalls,” Haschart laughed. “We are going through shavings by the ton full.” That’s where Proulx’s “miniature workforce” come into play. A group of about ten elementary school kids from the area volunteer one or two nights a week. They help feed the horses, clean the stalls, and groom the horses. “We just see what needs to be done and divide it out among all the kids and helpers,” said Taylor Thomas, a sixth grader who has been volunteering for the past two years. “I see differences in most of the horses. There’s a couple that are still pretty afraid of you but most of them seem happier,” Thomas said. Proulx estimated it will cost around $4,500 to care for each horse. Hope’s Legacy operates entirely off of private donations and Haschart said people have come out of the woodwork offering help. Veterinarians have donated resources and community members have given feed. They have even received donations from as far away as Canada. “The community response has been unbelievable,” Proulx said. When Orquida and Dan Ingraham opened up Afton Mountain B&B in 2002, they knew they’d be taking a step back from their busy corporate lives near Washington, D.C. But that didn’t mean their lives slowed down — running a B&B is 24/7 work! “Three times a day we fire that oven up,” said Orquida, who manages most of what goes on in the kitchen. And all of that cooking (and laundry… and ironing…) started them thinking about changing the way they think about power. Just last February, Dan heard a presentation about solar panels at the B&B Association of Virginia Conference. After the presentation, he was introduced to someone from Solarize Nelson, a group that brings together individuals and small businesses interested in solarizing to create one large bid for installation and reduce the price per customer. And as luck would have it, Solarize Nelson was having a meeting the very next week. Joe Moore, VP of Operations at AltEnergy (the company that won the bid and completed the installation for a total of 17 homes and businesses in Nelson County), is excited about how excited the Ingrahams are and how they can benefit from solar power. “I think for [Dan and Orquida] it’s going to help their bottom line,” said Joe. “And that’s also the really cool part for the industry because we’ve gotten to that point where it does make financial sense and that makes my job a lot easier.”

Joe added that it might not make financial sense – or even be completely possible based on sun exposure – for everyone, so he encourages those interested to consult a solar company from the beginning to make sure planning is done properly. Dan said, though, that the financial incentive is only a small part of why he and Orquida chose to install the solar panels at the 4,400 square foot B&B. “We knew we would eventually be saving money,” said Dan, taking into account the estimated power they’ll be generating plus the tax credit and the increased resale value of the home. “But it was more environmental.” “It’s definitely a different way to think about your work during the day,” added Orquida, who hopes to be generating about 60 percent of the electric power they use every day from the new panels. Dan, who says they would have probably gotten solar panels even if they weren’t business owners, has become a huge advocate for going solar and for Solarize Nelson. “We are happy to speak to anybody in the region who is interested or thinking about it,” he said, describing the six-week installation process as “really easy.” The national Solarize movement is a growing one and Joe says there are groups in Massanutten and Rockbridge forming now. “Both homeowners and businesses are getting interested,” he explained. “It’s just catching on kind of generally in our area. We don’t have a lot of state incentives, so it’s been a little slower to get here, but I think people are really coming around to solar.” BRL

Advantages of selling in the winter

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Timing is everything. Fortunately, there is “perfect” timing. Unfortunately, there is “bad” timing. Quite often life events don’t fit so neatly within our lives and on our terms. Perhaps that is why sellers would rather not open up their homes to prospective purchasers over the holidays or in the cold, dreary, winter months when their home may not feel as showcase worthy. While that is understandable, buyers don’t always have the luxury of timing their needs; making a move may be dictated by job relocations, divorce, or other major life changes. Hence, no matter what the season, there will always be buyers. Let’s explore a few reasons why sellers may want to consider listing in the winter months. Less competition; everyone knows that spring brings more buyers. However, what some fail to realize is that it also brings more sellers. When a buyer has more options,

sellers have to be even more mindful of making sure their property stands out in a crowd. It may be easier to win the race in the winter when there is much less competition. More motivation; the spring market brings out more buyers, but are they more motivated? Would you rather go look at homes on a nice warm, sunny spring day OR on a cold, blistery winter day? Any buyer willing to venture out on a less than desirable winter day is probably a serious buyer. When sellers celebrate holidays with extended family and friends, so do buyers. Buyers don’t typically want to disrupt their holiday festivities either, so again, if a buyer is house hunting over the holidays, that buyer is typically a motivated buyer, one choosing needing to purchase a home because of relocation or other life event. Cozier and inviting; emotions can

Marlo Allen

play a huge role in a buyer’s purchase decision. Hence, sellers may be able to capitalize on that fact by setting the stage to evoke that emotion. As long as they are not overdone or too cluttered, holiday decorations can be inviting. In addition, a warm interior with the fireplace going can entice a buyer to cozy up to the fire and focus on what may be a big selling feature such as a stone fireplace or an economic advantage of an alternate heat source.

to major cities, open up another opportunity for sellers by bringing in good second home prospects.

View worthy; there are BIG mountain views and then there are “seasonal” mountain views. Winter is the perfect time to feature a mountain view that may not be as evident when the foliage returns.

You never know when a buyer may be in the market for a property just like yours. If you want to sell, “any” time could be the “right” time. Follow these tips and it just may be time to celebrate!

Location, location, location; what may attract buyers to the area? In the winter, a ski resort such as Wintergreen, can be a big draw. Highly touristed areas, within a short drive

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

434-996-3525

Preparation; In order to make the most of the winter sales opportunity, sellers should price the home appropriately, have the home in tip-top showing condition, and make sure the home is easily accessible. Buyer’s slipping and sliding to your front door may not make the best first impression.

HOLIDAY HIGHLANDS ‘Tis the season to sip the taste of Scotland in Virginia First there was wine. Well, there’s always been wine. But there was more wine. Then came the beer. And the cider. And with two distilleries in town, it is now fair to say that Nelson County has it all. Virginia Distillery Company (VDC) opened to the public on November 14 and will start distilling their own spirits later this year. In the meantime, they’re creating Port-Finished Virginia Highland Malt Whisky, a unique Virginia single malt. “We bring in spirit that was originally distilled in Scotland and aged there for six years, but then we do the finishing in Virginia barrels, making it unique to Virginia,” said Gareth Moore VDC CEO and Chairman. And unlike a lot of the bourbons or other more traditional American whiskeys, he says VDC is sticking to what it knows best: single malt. “We’re going to be making one product and one product alone and we’re very focused on that. Single malt uses 100 percent malted barley and we’re making sure we’re getting everything right from the start.” In addition to the first few batches of whisky coming from Scotland to be finished up here, the new distillery has quite a few other things coming across the pond as well. “We have a distillery system that comes from Scotland. We’re bringing our grain, initially, from Scotland because the type of malted barley that makes high single malt isn’t available in the U.S.,” said Gareth. “And we’re bringing our expertise from Scotland - Andrew [Shand, master distiller] joined us last year and has been instrumental in getting the distillery built and departing that old world expertise here in Virginia to make an authentic product.”

Everything about VDC’s whisky has a Scottish heritage, but a very Virginia feel. The port-style wine casks they’re using to finish the Scottish wines? Yup. Those come from local wineries including King Family Vineyards in Crozet and Horton Vineyards in Gordonsville. And they’ll also be partnering with local farmers on a continual basis. At Virginia Distillery Company’s new Lovingston location, visitors will have the chance to taste the whisky and also try some whisky-based cocktails. “We’re going to be working with local Nelson County farmers as much as possible for seasonally inspired cocktails,” said Marlene Steiner, VDC’s Brand Director. “We’re working pretty much exclusively with the bounty of the area and we’ll have some input from Virginia mixologists, as well, who can help us craft a very local menu.”

Construction on the distillery started in 2011, so Gareth and his team are excited to finally be able to share the fruits of their labor. “It’s been a long time in the making and a lot of passion and emotional investment has gone into the project. I’ve looked forward to this day for several years; it’s the apex of many years of hard work,” he said. But whisky is a long-term business so the hard work isn’t over. In addition to waiting several years for the first batch of Virginiadistilled whisky to mature, they’re also expanding their visitor’s center and eventually building a museum to welcome tourists and locals alike. But in the meantime, VDC’s whisky-loving team is just happy to be finally tasting and sharing. “It’s just going to be a really amazing experienced and we’re all just thrilled to get it up and running and share it and tie it into Nelson County,” said Marlene. “We’re really excited about being in Lovingston.”

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

HARD CIDER HIGH UP

When Brian Shanks and John Washburn first came to Nelson County and thought about whether it was the right place for Bold Rock Hard Cider, one of the first people they met was Henry Chiles, a fifth generation apple grower of Carter Mountain Orchard in Charlottesvile. “He had everything we needed and wanted,” said Brian. “They were one of the reasons why we’re here and have been able to continue to expand the cidery. They grow such a good quantity of brilliant apples.” The Chiles family has helped Bold Rock expand, yes, but they’re also acting as host to the cidery’s newest outpost, the Bold Rock Cellar at Carter Mountain Orchards. “It just kind of connects the dots for people a little bit more,” said Cynthia Chiles. “We love that people can sit outside. They’re looking at the apple trees and drinking the cider out of the glass that came from those trees. It helps with the full education and shows people that cider doesn’t come out of the grocery store. It’s real fruit and real apples and there are real people who make it.”

The Bold Rock Cellar opened up in May and Lindsay Dorrier III, Bold Rock’s Director of Retail Operations, said they’re already looking forward to a bigger and better 2016. “I honestly think it’s a mutually beneficial partnership across the board,” said Lindsay. “We’re lucky to have a location that’s closer to Charlottesville with ready-made traffic and they’re grateful to have us up there because it adds a new angle of excitement.” At the Cellar, visitors to Carter Mountain can do almost everything they can at the Nellysford location. There are tastings, tasting flights, complimentary samples, pints for sale, growler refills (especially popular for the new IPA), retail cider, merchandise and more. Oh, and the view is nothing to pass up, either. “When you’re out there at Carter Mountain surrounding Monticello, if the world didn’t curve, you could just about see the sea,” said Brian. “It’s such a fabulous setting. I think people are overwhelmed with the site, the quality of the apples, and being fortunate enough to have Bold Rock out there and show the results of what fruit can be turned into.” BRL

Move over, Balsam. The magic of Magnolia can last until March.

In 100 years of local farming, the Saunders Brothers have certainly made a name for themselves in Nelson County. But it wasn’t until the 1990s that their Christmas season got as busy as the springtime. Tom Saunders learned how to make wreaths back when he ran a choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm and realized folks were looking for some holiday cheer for their front doors. He enlisted his wife’s help and they got good at it. Almost too good. “We couldn’t keep up with the demand so the company started doing it,” he remembered. “And in about three years the business grew to the point where we were making about 10,000 wreaths a year — all in three week’s time!” When making wreaths started cutting into employees’ holiday time off, Tom decided that enough was enough. The wreaths were undoubtedly popular, but such a small percentage of the business that it wasn’t worth all the stress and hard work during the Christmas season. So they scaled back. Last year, they sold just 400 wreaths ranging in price from $26 to $52. And they go fast.

“Early on, we entered some in a Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Contest and at least two years we won first in state, so that was pretty special,” said Tom. “I only have a couple of guys who make them now for the farm market, but those couple of guys are really good at what they do.” Tom’s wreaths are hugely popular not just because of how gorgeous they are, but because of how long they last. “We figured out some tricks,” he divulged. “Through 20 years of work we perfected it. I’ve sold magnolia wreaths that people say last until March!” Tom has employees make the majority of his wreaths but he still likes finding ways to be involved and keep his hands dirty. “What I enjoy doing is going around and looking at what’s wild in the woods and mixing all that stuff into wreaths,” he said, recounting all of the different colors of berries he can add to personalize the wreaths. “I’ve put turkey feathers in ‘em before! To me, it’s the different stuff that makes ‘em. I don’t want to be like the other 6,000 down the road. I want to be different one way or the other.” BRL

To whom would you like to leave your most cherished possessions? This is one of the basic questions of estate planning, and it is typically addressed in one of the first articles of a Last Will and Testament. But this simple question can also lead to the most heated family arguments following the passing of a loved one. Your children may get along just fine during your lifetime, but throw in grief and a slight disagreement over who gets grandma’s antique silverware, and they could find themselves completely estranged. When feelings get involved, the smallest decisions can have major consequences. Proper estate planning doesn’t just handle your assets. It considers the emotions of your heirs to prevent these arguments and to help them mourn without added stress. It aims to keep your family together. Personal belongings, legally speaking, are labeled as tangible personal property when constructing a Will. Tangible personal property includes things you can touch, hold, and move. These possessions – artwork, jewelry, dishes, furniture, collectibles, and so on – are attached to memories. You should consider your loved ones’ fond memories as you direct your possessions in your Will. But deciding who gets what takes time, and you probably don’t want to pay your attorney to list every item you possess in your Will. On the other hand, simply directing all of your tangible personal property to your residuary estate without itemized instructions will cause a lot of confusion and arguing. But there is a simple solution. When you meet with your attorney to discuss your Last Will and Testament, ask to incorporate a personal property memorandum. This will allow you to itemize your possessions and state explicitly to whom they belong after your death. The memorandum must be properly cited in an article of the Will, but you can add to the list as much as you like after your Will signing. Just sign and date your memorandum each time you add to it, and keep it in a safe place with your Will and other fiduciary documents. But do not postpone completing the memorandum. A personal property memorandum puts you in absolute control of the distribution of your possessions. But more importantly, you can rest at ease in life knowing that your descendants will not be able argue with one another over your material things. Your Will is not just for you. It is for your descendants and heirs. Your family and friends. As you make a responsible plan for your estate, meet with an attorney who works in estate planning to prepare a Will that is best for you and your loved ones.

Fall (Was) in the Air By the time you are reading this, Fall will be in the rearview mirror and looking straight into winter. But we will take a step back and remember this Fall for some time to come. The Blue Ridge Life Community has so many opportunities it’s not difficult to find a starting point. Adventures On The James : James River State Park
In October, we wrapped our last race of three with James River State Park’s Adventures on the James. We added a Nighttime 5K Trail Run to their Fall Festival. The weather was as perfect as the Brunswick Stew that was cooked on site starting in the wee hours of the morning. Sunset was 6:47 pm, which seems late by this reading, and gave plenty of time for the sun to slip over the ridge line by the start. With twilight’s perfect glow in the back drop and headlamps blazing, we sent the

runners into the abyss of the Park. All of the runners had a great time that could be seen at the races end with all the podium pictures regardless of whether they had won or not. I always love putting on night trail running events. I think the reason is mostly watching the uninitiated make their way through the dark but having so much while doing it. Like the night runs we used to host at Devils Backbone back in the day. With the wrap up of the Adventures on the James Games, I want to give a Big Shout Out to this year’s winners: Men – Ed Ross-Clunis and Women – Carrie Parker! These two competed in all three races and charged hard in every event. They are great people and athletes and we appreciate them joining us. Part of their winnings include A Weekends Cabin Stay in any Virginia State Park! Also our races were part of Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s (Presenting Sponsor) #Finish-

WithGold Series and greatly appreciated their support. We would also like to give a big applause to other supporting cast including Blue Ridge Life, Trager Bros Coffee, Rockfish Gap Outfitters, James River Association, Car Quest Appomattox, Appomattox River Company and Jamerson Building Supply. We look forward to doing it again next year! The Great Outdoors We hope everyone stopped by Rockfish Gap Outfitters on the way out to their favorite camping site this past Fall. Rockfish has everything and Mother Nature definitely tested our gear on some of our outings. Our camping out at James River State Park saw temps drop into the 20’s and for October that’s cold! Camping at the Festy was a great Fall chill as well. We escaped to Old Rag for a great end of the Leaf Season hike. We took on the whole enchilada loop

of about 8 miles. We started with a sunny crisp morning around 35°F. The trail was perfect to a touch of dusty. The top was the usual Old Rag Spectacular looking out and seeing the leaves go from dark green to orange to red to fallin’ and done at the top of Hawksbill. We took the fire road return and the trees seem to stretch up forever with their golden colors. If you have not made this journey, make sure to do it in the Shoulder Months! So by this reading, we trust Wintergreen Resort has some white stuff on their slopes and you have time to slide on down for a few turns. If the powder is natural, you can find me somewhere up around the Blue Ridge Parkway or Sherando running or snowshoeing through the trails. That is so much fun in the snow! Otherwise, the holidays are all around us and hope you and your families make the most of them. Get Out!

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

Vive Pierre I was recently at a friend’s house showing examples of some stonework and landscape concepts to a potential client. As we moved around the landscape, I admired an evergreen specimen that I had installed in front of a stone breezeway many years ago. In my mind, I recalled the quandary for how to landscape this area since the prominent stonework, height of the structure and proximity to a patio, walkway and garage were all factors that would need to be carefully considered. Ultimately, the decision fell on three of my favorite evergreen specimens: I chose ‘Pierre.’ In an otherwise monotonous melancholy of plants situated around your home, these specimens are like giant anchors that help contain the ebb and flow of tidal plant trends that find their way into your landscape on a yearly basis. At the top of my list is the aforementioned specimen. No, ‘Pierre’ is just a name that my friend attached to this particular specimen in their landscape. The real name is Chamaecyparis nootkatnensis ‘Pendula’ or the Nootka False Cypress. In form, this graceful specimen is a pyramidal upright tree with long weeping branches with sprays of dark green handsome foliage hanging from the limbs. This specimen grows best in full sun in a protected spot from the drying western winds. Although it tolerates a wide variety of soils, it is best in a moist, welldrained, slightly acidic soil. Size is variable but the species can grow to 25 feet with a 10 foot width. At the garden center, purchase a specimen that is at least 6 feet in height as training these guys to the preferred habit and shape can be challenging. Companion plants can be as formal as boxwood and as open as panicle hydrangea and a host of perennials. When I first moved back to this

area, I visited Pharsalia and was given a landscape tour by the late Perkins Flippin. During that tour, I really admired this next specimen - a very old, 20+ foot Japanese Umbrella Pine or Sciadopitys verticillata. Ok, don’t think ‘pine’ when you hear this because it is about as far from the humdrum, vanilla pines in this area as you can get. With an upright pyramidal habit, the Japanese Umbrella Pine exhibits dark green, stiff needles that are arranged in a whorl on the stem creating a texture and overall effect that is no less than stunning. Its appearance is almost fake as the combination of foliage, stems and bark are waxmuseum like. This guy works best in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Although the ultimate height found online is over 30 feet, accept that you will NEVER see this guy get to that height as its rate of growth is less than 6 inches per year (at best). Although this one is expensive already, purchase them with some size (4 foot at least) as there growth rate really is SLOW. Companion plants are really broad but perennials work well with its habit. Moving more to the front of the border, I really like the Montgomery Spruce or Picea pungens ‘Montgomery.’ This particular plant only grows to about 4 feet in height with about that same width. Yes, you get the INTENSE Carolina blue hue but in a dwarf, pincushion form that’s suitable for the perennial border. Be sure to keep other plants from being planted to close to this one as once you lose the foliage due to overcrowding, its gone for good. Always plant this guy in full sun and in a well-drained soil. Companion plants can range broadly but I always try to make them work off of the rich, deep blue hue. By the way, if you can’t find ‘Montgomery’, another cultivar called ‘Globosa’ is very close in habit and color.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, I have pain in my right side from time to time. Could I have gall stones? The gallbladder is a storage organ that sits under the liver on the right side of the upper belly. It is like a muscular bag that holds bile which is a juice that helps with fat digestion. When the ingredients in the juice are just right (just wrong) solids can form and become like little “stones.” In fact, a lot of people have these stones and never know it. But, for some they become a problem. The gall bladder squeezes when you eat a meal, particularly a fatty one, and forces the bile out through a little tube into the intestine. If you have gall stones, it isn’t hard to picture one of the stones getting shoved into the tube and then blocking it. So, the gallbladder is trying to force fluid out of a blocked up tube and that hurts! It can feel like an ache or even a sharp pain in the right upper belly. Often the pain can be felt in the back or even right shoulder. When the gallbladder stops squeezing (usually 3 or 4 hours later) then the stone can

drop back into the sack and the pain quits. But, eat another fatty meal and bam! On comes the pain again. Of course, it is not always that simple. Sometimes bad stuff happens like the stone gets stuck permanently in the tube which can cause lasting pain and fever and infection. Or, sometimes pain that feels like it could be gallstone pain is something else such as a pulled muscle, heartburn, appendicitis, shingles, constipation, liver disease, stomach ulcers, or even heart pain. That is why it is important to see your doctor if you do have symptoms like this. You need to find out what is causing your pain. The main test used to evaluate the gallbladder is an ultrasound, thankfully a painless test! Lab (blood) testing can also be helpful. If it does turn out to be the gallbladder, then fortunately there is surgery (or sometimes medication) that can help. Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
