thepublishers Just last night, as the adults were bundling up in jackets and solving the problems of the world with glasses of cheer, a small gang of under dressed children attacked the wild night with sticks and squeals. It’s been just over a week since the day we bolted out the door to hit the polls and by god, we’ve needed a night like this. For the former TV news junkies we are, election day is like a Super Bowl to us. Chatting with friends at the polls, forking a stack of pancakes cooked up by local Rotarians, grabbing a drink at the nearest brew pub, bringing home a “newsroom pizza” as you settle into the office, opening multiple tabs on your browser. I had printed out a pair of blank electoral maps and gave each kid five different colored pencils representing each presidential candidate on the Virginia ballot. Reflecting the large portion of the electorate who chose not to cast a vote, Adam scribbled all over the map before flipping it over to draw a family of dinosaurs. Peyton on the other hand, sitting next to a newly acquired life-size Elsa doll (creepy), happily colored in her map, handing electoral victories galore: Clinton got Texas, Trump got Colo-

rado, Stein got South Carolina, Johnson scored Florida, and McMullin took the wild and woolly state of West Virginia. The next morning, I loaded the final electoral map on my phone and showed it to Peyton. “Only red and blue?!” she cried. “That’s crazy!” “Remember the White House I showed you when we went to the museum last month? The new president is going to be living there,” I explained. “He’s going to live next to the dinosaurs.” Adam added. We are living in amazing times, drenched with history. As winter approaches, I am reminded of the words of Peyton’s Elsa doll: Let the storm rage on. The cold never bothered me anyway! Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Bringing out what’s best about the Holidays Holiday Libations, Under $20 If the holidays have a preternatural knack for bringing out both what’s best and worst in humans, I’m all for betting on the best. As we celebrate similarities, while accepting differences, let’s bet on the winning combo lotto ticket of compassion and generosity, demonstrating the best by donating food or time to others less fortunate. We can also be grateful for family and friends—human and furry friends alike. Such joining together in mutual appreciation, traditionally and historically involves the preparation of food and its accompanying wine to celebrate. I love the holidays not the least because of all the different kinds of foods: traditional dishes, sweet treats and delicacies, which while often shunned for their caloric content during the rest of the year, remain sanctioned, even encouraged during the holidays. And with the ever growing number of wineries, consumers can have their wine and drink it too. A few fine and festive bottles needn’t

dent the bank account. Dolin Blanc, Vermouth de Chambéry – Nothing says cool sophistication like real Vermouth, just as nothing says 1970s embarrassment like its opposite. Vermouth is aromatized wine, and of the four categories in the world that stand out for enduring impact on classic drinks, Vermouth is the only one that, like Absinthe, is based on wormwood. The word Vermouth comes from the German word for wormwood, vermut, and recalls a Germanic tradition dating to the Middle Ages. Infusing wine with wormwood in any meaningful quantity imparts herbaceousness and a bitter undertone that does wonders for aiding digestion as well as for killing off unwanted critters. There is perhaps no better choice of aperitif than the elegant Dolin Blanc. Clear and slightly sweet with distinct notes of hazelnuts on the finish, it stimulates your digestion, helping you with what’s to come, ready or not. Serve chilled with a splash of soda, or best, just on its own. $18.99 Willm Riesling, Cuvée Emile, 2014 –If pressed to pair only one wine with an

array of foods, I’d opt for an Alsatian Riesling. In this example the fruit and its accompanying sweetness balance perfectly with a piercing acidity that can cut through any amount of goose fat or other holiday cheer. Tart apple notes, with pear and honeysuckle. $24.99. Holiday special: $19.99. Valle dell’Acate, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, 2013 –From the Jacono family, one of the great Sicilian producers, this is elegance in a bottle. It’s a silken blend of Frappato, offering light raspberry notes and finesse, blended with Nero d’Avola, for a velvety structure, with rich notes of black cherry, prune, carob, dark chocolate, licorice and leather. Nero d’Avola can have the big, full body of a Cabernet or Syrah without the price. 91 pts. Wine Advocate. $26.99. Holiday special: $19.99. As we bid this year adieu, we wish great wellbeing, love, joy and peace to you and all beings, and to our planet. Gently rolling hills, dotted with vineyards and châteaux, and long, lazy rivers: The Loire Valley, playground to the kings, and now to some of the most innovative wines in France. May 2017. Recently retired, Jake Garland’s new passion is an heirloom corn called

“For years they called it Thomas Family Farm corn ... The old Thomas family in Clifford used to grow this corn. It’s kinda sorta back home where it started.” – Jake Garland The Five Maple Farm

Blue Ridge LIFE

DECEMBER 2016

The twinkle in Jake Garland’s eye and the smile on his face can only mean one thing. “So I’m still like I’m on vacation. I’m the giddy retiree on steroids.” It was just months ago that this handsome 64-yearold career Sysco food guy quit his day job for good and checked out. He’s now free to do what he wants and for him, that means ignoring the buzzing of his cell phone and puttering around the farm where he’s planted four fields, totaling roughly six acres, of bloody butcher corn. “When I get tired of picking corn, I may take up golf, but not today!” he says, as we drive up in his Kubota tractor with his dog Belle, tagging alongside us. When a pair of donkeys in the adjacent field see that orange machine chugging up the hill, they know it’s picking time. Stopping the tractor above a row of corn that has yet to be picked, and wearing a pair of muck boots and what my husband calls logger pants, Jake hops off the Kubota and attacks a stalk. It helps that he’s tall because the ears on bloody butcher tend to emerge several feet from the ground. “Most of the time these things are like 10-12 inches. Like specimens almost. They’re beautiful.”

He’s a corn ninja. Crack, shuck and thump go the ears into a plastic tub. “I started with four pounds two years ago. I planted that four pounds and that year I got a 300 pound yield out of it. So last year, I planted about 20 pounds and we got over 5000 pounds of seed last year. Out of 20 pounds of corn!” No pesticides. No herbicides. But he did use a little 10-10-10 to kickstart things. “It’s amazing, really. This corn has an amazing germination rate. Every single seed I put in the ground has come up so I’m happy about that. It looked really pretty until I had that first wind and it’s still as tall but the ears aren’t as pretty as they were last year.” Even so, this is shaping out to be a decent harvest. The spring rains delayed planting until June 5 and the wind Jake mentioned, stunted things a bit. But it’s not like Bloody Butcher’s a new kid on the block. “For years they called it Thomas Family Farm corn,” Jake explains, as he rips off another ear. “The old Thomas family in Clifford used to grow this corn. It’s kinda sorta back home where it started.” In the old days, people may have eaten this stuff but it’s generally a feed corn that needs to be dried, shelled and ground. And there just happens to be a water-powered mill in Lowesville that can do just that. Jake was at the Local Food Hub’s warehouse in Crozet when he ran into the owner of the mill, Will Brockenbrough. “It turned out we were neighbors and he had grown a little bit of corn the year before.” DECEMBER 2016

Blue Ridge LIFE

13

Will’s late father, J. Gill Brockenbrough, Jr., owned the mill which uses the power of the Piney River to turn the wheels that turn corn into grits or meal. Built in 1794, Will’s father purchased it in the early 1980’s and began the restoration process. “In starting the mill, the really difficult thing has been being able to obtain really good high quality corn. There is very little organic corn available ... so I’ve had to go find small farmers willing to grow this for me. It’s taken years to get enough people on board to grow what we want, things like bloody butcher and Hickory King. It is that relationship that is so important and that’s the way it was done 200 years ago.” It’s the kind of thing many chefs are into these days – Chefs like Ian Boden who owns The Shack in Staunton. “Corn being a staple in Appalachia, and southern cooking in general, we use it quite a bit,” Ian explains. “We do a whole corn ferment and then grind that into our grits and then cook … It accentuates the corn flavor and gives it a little bit more sweetness. It makes for a more dynamic grit.”

14

Blue Ridge LIFE

DECEMBER 2016

Ask Jake how he likes his grits and his eyes brighten up like a kid on Christmas morning. “We’ve tried them all different ways. These are true stone ground grits. You’ve got to cook these things 30, 35 minutes. We like to put them in four cups of chicken stock, 1 cup grits. You stir them in slowly, a little bit of salt, add butter – I like salted butter in mine – add a little bit of heavy cream, you feel the consistency changing.” And then the cheese. “Smoked Gouda is my favorite.” As I leave, Jake’s handing me a sack of grits to take home and I’m reminded that this man knows how to sell it. But when you can spend an afternoon in a field and hand pick corn that predates anyone alive, Bloody Butcher sells itself. Up the road in Lowesville, Will would probably agree. “Something we’ve been trying to do from the very beginning is get back to the origins of what food is in Virginia and to be able to use heirloom corn in a completely water powered mill really is getting back to what it’s all about.” BRL

LOVINGSTON

[ nelson county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

DECK THE HALLS of the farmhouse that found you.

It’s safe to say that most Nelson County transplantresidents have stories of falling in love with the area after visiting, and subsequently relocating. In the tale of Mike and Deb Verplank, Nelson County found them all the way in Pittsburgh. The new owners of the Orchard House B&B didn’t originally intend on starting a new chapter of their lives in Lovingston, but as fate would have it, they’re here to stay. Mike had worked for the same company for 30 years and had a chance to move with the company or pack it in. Meanwhile their two kids were enrolled at the same college in Ohio, and Deb was ready for a career change herself. “We have traveled to B&B’s throughout our 30-year marriage and we would always leave them saying, ‘That was fun’ and ‘We could do that.’ The more we

started talking, the more we thought that now was our chance.” “It all just started to line up,” continues Deb. “We actually both enjoy wine, so we started Googling up-and-coming wine regions, and Nelson County kept popping up no matter how we approached it.” Having never heard of Nelson County or even visited Virginia, they relied on Google for information on B&B’s for sale in the area. The Orchard House was among the results. Deb recalls, “When we called the owners they said, ‘How did you find us? We’re not even for sale.’ “We had been looking at an old listing, but they called us back in about five days saying, ‘Let’s talk.’ We do think in some odd way it was meant to be. We love the atmosphere, this property, the people. It just feels like home.” continued on page 18

DECEMBER 2016

The previous owners had run the business for the past 14 years and were ready to retire, but they wanted to make sure it went to the right people. And if anyone doubted whether Deb was supposed to be there, the fact that she happened to have enough Christmas decorations to fill the sixbedroom farmhouse should seal the deal. “I really have a soft spot for Christmas. A lot of the things I love are things that help this job be so much fun. I love entertaining, I love decorating, I love making people feel special. And those are the elements I think that Christmas brings out.” Deb was clearly born to play the part of warm and caring hostess, but she’s not the only one filling roles in the household. “As well as jumping in and taking the role as head cook, Mike is also an outstanding visionary and big-picture thinker. So he’s able to look at this not just as getting up and making breakfast, but he’s got a whole business plan. It’s been

exciting and I have to say, kind of fun to get to work side-by-side with him. We’ve raised two kids but we’ve never really been business partners, so that’s kind of been an exciting opportunity.” In their short time at the Orchard House, the Verplank’s have already made big improvements to the property, including fixing the driveway and putting a functioning fountain in the pond. Not to mention the man-hours that went into redecorating and refurbishing the home. All without missing a beat as far as guests are concerned. “We sealed the deal April 29, 2016 so were entering our sixth month,” tells Deb. “We moved in on a Wednesday and that Friday we had two full houses. We jumped in with both feet and we haven’t looked back. It’s such a huge change from the corporate roles that we both came from, but we’re embracing those changes and enjoying every day.” BRL

Holiday “Honey-Do” List! A list of repairs that can protect your home and family

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

With gift lists, grocery lists, and guest lists, it just doesn’t seem like the time to ruin the festivities and introduce another to-do list. In reality there is no better time than the holiday season, when family and home may closest to your heart, to slip in one more check list to protect your home, investment, and the ones you love. Plain and simple, it makes good sense (and cents) to routinely perform and invest in these home maintenance tips. • Test smoke detector sensors and alarms. Batteries should be changed once or twice a year. • Test carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in America. If you have only one detector, place it in a hallway outside the bedroom mounted 14 inches off the floor to face height on the wall, but never where there is a draft.

• Test auto reverse safety feature on garage door openers. A ga rage door is often the heaviest and largest moving equipment around the home. Consult the owner’s manual for maintenance and lubrication tips. • Test the pressure and temperature relief valve for proper operation. A temperature setting of 120 to 130 can economize utility bills. An operable temperature relief valve (TPR) can prevent a pos sible explosion by releasing pres sure buildup in the water heater. • Check water purification and water softener filters. Excessive levels of calcium and magnesium in hard water can lead to buildup in water heaters and eventually clog pipes and diminish plumbing efficiency. • Clean and freshen your drains. To keep sinks running freely, throw a handful of baking soda into the drain and follow it with

hot water OR pour in 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit for 30 min utes; chase down with very hot water. • Degrease and freshen your garbage disposal. Turn on the disposal and throw in ice cubes made from equal portions of water and vinegar. • Clean range hood filter. Remove and clean the metal mesh filter that keeps grease from getting into the ductwork. Soak in hot water and liquid dish detergent and rinse clean with hot water. • Clean appliances. Use an allpurpose, handy dandy cleaner made from 1 teaspoon borax, ½ teaspoon washing or baking soda, 2 teaspoons white vinegar, ¼ teaspoon dishwashing liquid, and 2 cups hot water. • Remove and clean range burners and keep range top clean as spills occur. Immediately sprinkle food spills with table salt. This will

absorb the moisture and make the spill easier to clean up when the range top cools. • Clean and brighten tile and grout. Try hydrogen peroxide OR a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar along with a new hard toothbrush. • Clean and replace furnace and air conditioner filters. Filters are cheaper by the dozen. Label each filter by month to serve as your monthly installation reminder. Once you have made your lists, and checked them twice, pause and just enjoy spending time with your family and friends. Have a safe and happy holiday!

Meet Duppy. He’s a SnodBOT. He has one purpose: To dream Craig Snodgrass – Husband, Father, Artist, Space Cowboy – Attempting to navigate through both time and space, on a journey inside the creative chasm that is his own mind. “There is a whole world in there, and I’m not sure what’s going on in it. There’s definitely some themes that are always present, and usually they go back and forth between space girls and robots,” Craig tells me from atop a colorful stool in his immaculately decorated workspace that wreaks of artistic influence. On his bright and fresh website, shop.snodgrassart.com, Craig explains, “I like to think I tell stories with these pretty little pictures. Stories that are inspired by retro science fiction, rock and roll posters and old stuffed animals.”

This inspiration he speaks of is plastered across the walls of his Staunton home/studio in the form of vinyl covers and posters for bands like Gogol Bordello and David Bowie. These pieces are intermixed with some of his own sci-fi artwork, and also his most recent and most impressive work of art, DUP-1 or Duppy; a robot whose primary function… is to dream. “I was looking to take my art in a different direction. So this past summer I started tinkering around with some 3D programs, to start mashing pieces together.” After raising more than $6,500 on Kickstarter through his “Adopt a SnodBOT” program, Craig was able to finally bring his designs to life. “I designed the models, made some masters via 3D printing, and then sent those masters to these guys that know how to work with those materials, and they cast them out,” says Craig. “There’s a niche market for that, in the designer toy world, to make your own toys. That is another science that I was not about to get evolved in. I don’t do this art thing full-time, I do web development for another magazine. This is just something I’ve been pursuing.” What Craig is so gently stating is that, this is what he does in his spare time, instead of watching TV or thumbing through his phone.

“I get one little idea and then it explodes. When I made the toy I said, ‘Oh gosh, I can’t just have a toy. If you have a toy, he needs a comic book, and if he’s a comic book, he needs a backstory. And then we’ll need a board game too!’ It’s all these things that I want to execute, but I’m just one guy.” “I’ve got a very busy mind, is what some teachers have told me.” This past year was one of much exploration for new artistic outlets that could satiate that perpetually creative mind. In addition to making Duppy a palpable reality, Craig wrote, illustrated and self-published his first children’s book, The Clever Girl. He was also an award winner in 2015 at Staunton’s Art in the Park for his paintings and illustrations. All while working a full-time job and contributing to his family and household. (Maybe he’s a robot too?!) “I am always creating, to some degree ... I’ve got a better idea of how to do this now,” says Craig, referring to his SnodBOTS venture. “So it might make it easier going forward, but this was a lot of work just to get the whole thing put together. Everything was unknown, every step of the way was another thing.” And like all things collectable, a limited amount of Duppies were made to exist in this world, never to be reproduced again. For those lucky few who acquire this rad little robot, he just might become the next statement piece that sits upon your bookshelf till the end of time. “This is a very new project, and it’s something I have no experience in whatsoever, but it came out successfully. I’ve been lucky, encouragements really helped me, seeing people respond to my artwork, that’s what pushed me to keep going.” It’s the positive response from the public that keeps this man traveling to another dimension; ‘a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A journey to a wondrous land of imagination’. Next stop, Geartown – A place that is not as it seems. BRL DECEMBER 2016

Unlfiltered and Unprocessed,

RAW LEARNING is a Haven for Homeschoolers.

Blue Ridge LIFE

DEC. 2016

NEW! Christopher Staebell’s school day starts when he logs into his laptop and opens up Counter-Strike, a computer game that he and his friends play competitively. Here at Raw Learning, a homeschool resource center in Staunton, students are given freedom to pursue their interests with few limits. As long as thirteen-year old Christopher observes the 20-minute technology break, he may play computer games all day. Parents often serve as teachers or facilitators of Raw Learning’s project-based focus. “It’s hard to train our minds to trust kids to learn independently,” says Jen Kidd, parent and lead facilitator at Raw Learning. But that’s exactly what the four learning facilitators do each day as they interact with students throughout the many open learning spaces at the center.

$62,500.00 (1-K B5) MLS#551999 Original owner carefully selected this site years ago, and now offers it for the first time. Stunning golf front location on 14th hole. Terrific views. Quiet and private at the end of the Wild Ginger Lane culdesac. Upscale homes. The hardwoods on site are mature, providing a beautiful canopy and an open forest floor. The site rests on the much preferred left side of the fairway, as opposed to the slice prone right hand side. (Slices being the most common mis-shot). The cart path is on right side of the fairway, so players and passersby will be far from your back yard and patio. Underground electric, and central water. This is one of those rare circumstances where no compromises need be made. A spectacular property, in every way.

Raw Learning occupies the entire first floor of a building located on the campus of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. In addition to a classroom complete with a chalkboard, art supplies and lab equipment, there is also a library, a workshop for building, and spaces for cooking, tumbling and playing musical instruments. The outdoor area includes a basketball hoop, picnic tables and plenty of room to run. continued on page 30

Classes, focused around topics requested by the students, are offered throughout the week. (Wednesdays are field trip days, when everyone turns out to experience a local attraction such as Luray Caverns, Rope Adventure Park, or a pottery workshop.) Many students chose to learn independently rather than attend classes while at Raw Learning, particularly those who have recently transitioned from other environments where classwork is mandatory. Christopher, who left public school to attend Raw Learning just over a year ago, was one such student. “Last year was a detox year for me,” he explained. “I needed time to get into a routine and detox from peer pressure, bullying, that kind of stuff.” Each Monday the students write their goals for the week on sticky notes and put them on a large white board. Goals include building a computer, getting a job, making cupcakes, leveling up in a game, doing research, learning times tables, forming a book club, having a lemonade stand, and catching a Dragonite in Pokémon GO. When I visited on a Thursday morning, the majority of students were not in class. Groups of kids ranging from ages three to thirteen tumbled on mats, compared notes about computer games, and played with modeling clay. A class about water experimentation designed for preschool age children attracted some of the older kids, who stood at tables happily mixing baking soda with other substances alongside shorter classmates on stools. Raw Learning affords the opportunity for homeschool students to learn with other children. For parent Whitney Swales, who brings her three daughters several times a week, the benefits go beyond socialization. “They get more freedom here [than at home],” she said. This is slightly ironic, since there are 72 rules that everyone – both children and adults – must follow while at Raw Learning. These rules govern behavior related to safety, sharing, privacy and food. For example, rule #3 establishes that when someone is using something and another student wants a turn, a timer is set for 20 minutes. The complete list of rules, which was agreed upon by both students and staff, is posted on a wall. Anyone can call a meeting at any time to modify, change, or add to the list of rules. Each child and each adult has one vote. Whitney’s daughter Nariah shows me the cartwheels she’s been practicing down the long hallway. A few minutes later, I find her with sister Nalani in the detective class working with the instructor to decode messages. The eight and nine-year-old sisters are, in fact, the only students in the class, as other children have chosen to play kickball outside or engage in craft projects with facilitators in other rooms. Gleamer Sullivan, a homeschooling parent, founded Raw Learning after reading Alfie Kohn’s books on parenting and intrinsic motivation. Gleamer believes that all children are inherently motivated to learn. “We see emotional, physical and social learning as important as academic learning,” she noted. It doesn’t bother her that classes at Raw Learning aren’t always well attended. In a recent class, for example the teacher didn’t get the kids involved hands-on during the first session; the next time the class met, only five of the original twenty students attended. “Students don’t want to be talked at,” Gleamer said. “They expect interactive learning.” When asked what they like about Raw Learning, kids express satisfaction at being able to pursue their own interests. Christopher sums up his feelings about the center in two sentences. “At my old middle school, we always wondered why we needed to learn something the teacher wanted us to learn, and they never told us. Here, I see why.” BRL

Before I sign off, let me reiterate a few key points that I’ve discussed in this space: • Protect your family. I know it’s hard to think about, but we should all consider what we will leave behind. Prepare a will. Create a trust. Plan the distribution of your assets and liabilities. This is the last good deed we can do for our loved ones. We owe them that much. • Every criminal matter is serious. You never know what impact a conviction—any conviction—will have on your future. Your permanent record is not something you should risk. Even traffic tickets can cause significant consequences if ignored.

I’ve recently been called to serve in public office here in my native Nelson County, Virginia. I am excited to begin my new role, but unfortunately it will prevent me from writing in the future. Thank you for letting me share my thoughts with you over these past few years.

• Always be courteous with law enforcement. These men and women risk their lives daily on our behalf. If something is done in error it will be settled in the calm arena of the courtroom, but remember, you have a right to remain silent. Exercise that right. • Always read the fine print. Does your car insurance cover your expenses if your windshield breaks? How often does your homeowner’s insurance require you to clean your chimney? Are you allowed to have that grill on the deck of your rental property? What documentation do you need to file when you buy a new dog? So many legal issues can be resolved before they begin if you know the answers to these kinds of questions. • Know your rights and duties. Whether you’re a landlord, a student, a business owner, a caregiver, a spouse, or any other role in life, the laws of our Commonwealth and sister states give you certain privileges and responsibilities. Take the time to understand what the laws mean for you. • If you’re ever in doubt about a legal matter, consult a local attorney. The lawyers in this area know how to help people just like you, because they are just like you. Get the answers you need from professionals who practice in this community. Keep these points in mind and you’ll be ahead of the game. I’ve truly enjoyed connecting with you every month. Stay tuned—perhaps another Nelson County lawyer will be along shortly to share his thoughts with you. Sincerely, Daniel Rutherford

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

What a year! This year, the Virginia Off Road Series visited the Nelson County area multiple times for some awesome mountain bike and trail running races that included three at Wintergreen, one at Walnut Creek Park, three in Staunton, one at the Miller School of Albemarle, and two over in Charlottesville. Plus, Bold Rock Hard Cider was our Presenting Sponsor, hosting our Champion’s Ceremony to wrap up the season. Mountain biking has deep roots in the surrounding countryside and Virginia as a whole. Our oldest race is the Tidewater Challenge in Toano and will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017. Wintergreen Resort has been hosting races for the last three years. This year, Wintergreen took it up a notch and created a miniseries of mountain bike and trail running races called the Tread & Trai.. Then a short drive down US

29, Walnut Creek has been the host for the Chimney Chase mountain bike race off and on for the last 5-7 years. Massanutten Resort has its 29th anniversary of its multiday event, the Massanutten Hoo Ha coming up in 2017. Recreational mountain biking isn’t easy. Can you imagine racing one? This is a sport of trial and error best enjoyed with friends. That way you can enjoy your friends’ mishaps and vice versa. “Over the handlebars and through the woods we go” is the typical mantra. You are guaranteed to have mishaps. But as you practice, as with most things worth doing in life, practice makes perfect. It’s at that point you may wish to take on the trails at Wintergreen to challenge yourself versus your competition on a 4 mile lap with 800 feet of climbing per lap. It’s tough and rewarding when you cross that finish line.

Which brings us back to the Virginia Off Road Series. In 2016, we had 24 event weekends from April to October with more than 1,900 athletes participating. From the Tidewater/Central regions to the heights of Wintergreen, men and women mountain bike athletes cranked out results to earn points towards standing on the podiums at Bold Rock Hard Cider in Nellysford this year. One of our largest and most competitive categories was the Beginner Men and Women. The Virginia Off Road Series had more than 275 beginner athletes competing in more than 480 races. The Top 10 in Men and Women did more than 100 races themselves. That’s a lot of racing for first timers! So if you are thinking about it, you have company and lots of it. With 2016 in the books, you have time to train up for your first race next spring.

DECEMBER 2016

The Winter Landscape Wish List It should come as no surprise that once again, winter is here. Deep, dark and cold winter where the leaves of most trees and shrubs litter the barren landscape and the only sign of life, for many houses, is the smoke from the chimney and soft glow of lights inside a framed window. Unfortunately for many homeowners and their picturesque homes, winter lasts around five months in this area. That is just under half a year where many find themselves attempting to control a sick, deepened depression upon the realization that their landscape has nothing to offer guests more than twigs, trunks and silhouettes. It doesn’t have to be that way. Through bark, berries, modified hardscapes and other methods, your winter landscape can continue to show your hard work – even when it is only viewed from the warm side of a kitchen window or car door. Houses that sit against virgin forests have a unique setting that I covet. Tall hardwoods and evergreens are at the very heart of my dream home’s backdrop. Removing twiggy undergrowth and small scrub trees while limbing up the taller giants exposes a myriad of textured tree barks – some smooth, some deeply grooved, some shaggy, all fantastic. Where applicable, add in other trees that compliment this interesting bark including birch, Sango Kaku Japanese maple, paperbark maple, dawn redwood, Natchez crape myrtle, red twig dogwood and others. The important thing is to gradually tame the natural area with the aforementioned specimens as you approach your home or structure. Berries serve many purposes – they are aesthetically pleasing to an otherwise drab landscape during the winter months, they adorn our homes during the most wonderful time of the year (Christmas) and ultimately serve as a gourmet meal for our feathered friends when pickings are slim. Some

of my favorites are winterberry, American holly and heavenly bamboo. Don’t forget the male as some of these require a male to ensure berry production in the fall/winter. Your hardscapes can now take on a different role as the weather turns cold. Where there are none, add them. A figurine, birdbath, birdhouse or other hardscape creates focal points in an otherwise sea of tan and brown. Fill birdbaths and containers with pine cones, boughs of winterberry, magnolia and spent blooms of hydrangea. Consider planting dwarf conifers in containers. Walls can hold wreaths – even those that know no holiday, often times a mixture of hardwood twigs and winterberry. Experiment. The only wrong way is to leave them dark, cold and devoid of any attempt to create something interesting from an otherwise ordinary object. Evergreens are the backbone of any landscape – in particular, during the winter. The best evergreen settings are a combination of upright, mounding and low shrubs scattered throughout the landscape. Their uses go from framing doors to outlining walks and landscape beds to offering a strong, pyramidal, dark green hue in an otherwise sea of deciduous trees. Never underestimate their aesthetic value in your landscape and ultimately the resale value of your home. Finally, lighting. Winter lights are perhaps more of a reason to extend the UF wires to the landscape than in the summer. Nothing is more inviting or spectacular in the winter months than a sprinkling of snow onto a lighted patio or wall or an up lit statue with a blanket of snow forming on its crest. Always opt for a dimmer switch when installing lights in the landscape as you will dial down in the heat of summer and dial up when a coating of snow is in the forecast.

Gout is a painful problem to have. It is caused by an inflammatory reaction to extra uric acid in the body and affects the joints. Some people make extra uric acid; others don’t get rid of it as fast as they should. Either way, too much of that stuff in your system and you will probably get gout eventually. When the inflammatory reaction occurs, you get a very painful, red, hot joint. It usually comes on fairly quickly (over a few days). Often people tell me it hurts so much that a slight breeze hitting the joint is excruciatingly painful. They can’t allow a bed sheet to touch the joint. We’re talking pain! If you don’t do anything, it will usually go away in 1-3 weeks, but those will be some unhappy weeks! If you do have a painful, red, hot joint, you ought to see your doctor sooner than later, because whether it is gout, infection, or injury it should be cared for quickly. Your doctor

can give you medicine to calm down the attack and prevent more attacks. He or she will likely do some blood work to see how much uric acid is in your system to help guide treatment. Diet can have an effect on gouty attacks. Studies show that red meat or seafood can bring on attacks, while increasing the amount of dairy might help stave them off. Also, it is probably true that all of the following can cause a gout episode: alcohol, sardines, anchovies, liver, sweetbreads, oatmeal, peas, beans, lentils, spinach, mushrooms, and cauliflower. So, if you have a tendency towards gout, try to avoid the above. Also, make sure you do seek treatment, because gout attacks over time can lead to long lasting arthritis. Happy holidays to all of you reading this. I sincerely hope that the joy of the season touches each of you.
