from
thepublishers When your son approaches you with his toy tractor and asks you to clean it for him, it may be his subtle way of telling you he poured cinnamon all over the couch to create a construction zone. The good news is the couch is brown and cinnamon isn’t lard. While Adam may have a future in earth removal, Peyton’s passion is the pencil. As I type, she is sitting on my lap “grading papers.” She’s marking up a gift receipt Santa must have left behind. “Two and five. Two and five,” she repeats, making notes with the hieroglyphics of a two year-old: spirals and V’s. In her mind, she is doing important work. And even though I am tempted to hurry her on upstairs for her afternoon nap, I know the days of her climbing up on my lap, with the sticky hands of an apple eater, are limited. As are the days when Adam pushes the gravel in our driveway, or when he piles up some river rock to “build a fire,” mimicking the campfire ring we have out back. In his mind, this too, is important work. And I’m sure whatever compelled him to scale a fence and get tangled up in poison oak yesterday had something to do with “important work.” If Peyton (his conscience) would have
been around, she would have told him “No, Abbam, nooooo!!!!” At about this time eight years ago, we were introducing ourselves to potential advertisers in Nelson County. Armed with a hideously loud hot pink binder filled with diagrams of the notyet-published magazine, we gathered enough ads to launch the first issue of Nelson County Life, which was released on April Fool’s Day of 2005. We figured if the business flopped, well, April Fools! This January, we come to you as Blue Ridge Life. Email us your story ideas. We usually reply to emails quickly unless we are tied up with “important work” that involves cinnamon and grading papers. Happy New Year! Yvette & Tommy Stafford JANUARY 2013 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
New Hopes, New Castles of Popes January’s here. Resolutions made, new hopes stirred. The earth continued its eternal, axial spin post Solstice, and while spring will be nudging in a few short months, these shortened, winter days are a beautiful excuse to turn inward, reflect and… drink Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Châteauneuf-du-Pape owes not only its name, which means ‘New Castle of the Pope’, but also its existence to the Popes of Rome. The destiny of this area was much altered when a 72-year-old man decided to move in. The old man was thin and pale, and looked as though he should check into the nearest hospital, not go on to build a château more like a fortress than a palace. All of this would be unimportant if the man had not been John XXII, the second of the Avignon Popes, reigning from 1316 to 1334. The presence of the papal court in Châteauneuf encouraged winegrowing. John XXII planted a small vineyard with high quality wine and the wine from the area became the fashion of the times. About the same time, Petrarch
wrote that to be able to say how much you love is to love but little. I extend this to certain favorite wines, Châteauneuf-du-Pape among them. If Bordeaux is cerebral, and Burgundy sensuously elegant, then Châteauneufdu-Pape is the quintessential wine of pleasure. If you think about all the wines in the world, Châteauneufdu-Pape is one of the purest, most un-manipulated and truest translations of a vineyard. Most of the great Bordeaux, Burdgundy and California Cabernets rely heavily on new oak, whereas in CDP only a small percentage of new oak is used. In addition, Châteauneufs can be drunk young yet have tremendous aging potential. In youth you’ll taste exuberance and the sexy flamboyance of fruity Grenache. With age you’ll notice more secondary nuances of spice, earth and leather. And where else in the world can you find vines as old? So build a fire, light some candles, gather friends or, in their absence, reach for a great book…then pour the Châteauneuf-du-Pape. La Bastide St. Dominique, Secrets de Pignan, Châteauneuf-du-Pape,
Your toothbrush should be replaced after recovering from the Flu. Come get one, and quality preventive care, at our office.
2010 – Eric Bonnet is the talent behind La Bastide St. Dominique. A few months ago, a group of wine tasters and I enjoyed an excellent tasting at the estate. Eric’s wife Julia poured the Secrets de Pignan last. Made from sixty plus year-old vines, it was the unanimous favorite. Black fruit aromas layered among spicy notes, licorice, tobacco, black tea and bittersweet ganache. Rich and incredibly smooth. A special wine for a special occasion. Pairs best with strong cheeses, stews or game. $54 Domaine Grand Veneur, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Origines, 2010 – I like Alaine Jaume of Domaine Grand Veneur not only because his wines are excellent but also because he practices sustainable viticulture. Of the Les Origines Robert Parker writes: “The 2010 is nearly off the charts in terms of concentration. […] it is noble, reserved and pure with plenty of black and blue fruit notes intermixed with subtle garrigue, graphite and spice box. 94-96 pts.” $62 Spain & Portugal May 2013. He was graduating high school and there was no way Tim Smith was going to spend another day of his life inside a building, sitting at a desk. If anything, he would be outside making them.

His dad sold insurance and Tim had been to his office. “I just knew I couldn’t be indoors. I couldn’t wait to get out of high school, let alone couldn’t stand the thought of spending another day inside. I went to work on horse farms when I got out of high school and enjoyed being outside.” Working on horse farms soon led to working on houses and building them. “One thing led to another and I slowly drifted into furniture and working with woods ‘cause I always loved wood.” There’s a joke there – one Tim told me as we chatted – that we probably shouldn’t reprint. So instead, let’s talk about oiling wood. “I’m a nice Christian boy and one day I was out putting some oil on some hardwood I’d finished sanding and the color was so beautiful because the oil brings out the grain and the hardwood so beautifully. So, I told my love Victoria that when I died I wanted her in my obit to print that one of my hobbies was oiling hardwood.” And a business was born, or at least a name for one. Smitty’s Hardwoods specializes in crafting custombuilt furniture made of reclaimed woods, or pine that’s been intentionally weathered. “Like my father said about his profession, it’s for people who can’t do anything else,” he explained, with tongue firmly implanted in cheek.

“I built tree houses as a kid. Something about the feel of wood and how it splits, just works. Plus Jesus did it as a kid before he went to ministry. I figured if it was good enough for him, it would be good enough for me.”
So on a Saturday morning, you’ll find Tim and maybe one of his border collies, Pippin, in the shop, with the radio tuned to a show Tim’s Jesus would have enjoyed: Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me! After that, he grooves out to an acoustic show. “And real country music, not the new country music. Not the stuff they play today.” Though he admits to liking Jamey Johnson. “He’s real new but he’s a throwback country artist that’s fabulous and has got a gritty voice.” And there’s a guy who’s trying to make it big. His name is Dave Matthews. “I grew up listening to Matthews because he was local, before he was famous. Still love him to death and he’s a super guy on top of being popular.”
And he owns several of Tim’s pieces. Not only that, but Tim and his old business partner remodeled his Scottsville home. Good music and good craftsmanship tend to find each other. “They have an appreciation,” Tim explains, referring to musicians like Matthews. “I think they recognize talent. David definitely does ... “I know John Grisham pays for nice work and they have an eye for that thing. When you have money you develop an eye for food, art or anything. Music. Because you’re exposed to more. The more stuff you’re exposed to in life. Like in your youth, when you’re young, I see some of the stuff my kids listen to and I think ‘God, I see now what my parents were thinking about me and the crap I listened to when I was young.’” continued on page 13
One of Tim Smith’s border collies, named Pippin rests on a white pine harvest table outside his shop in Swoope, just west of Staunton in Augusta County (opposite). The popular harvest tables are made from reclaimed wood, and finished to allow the saw marks and imperfections to show through the hand oiled finish. Relaxing on a lunch break, Tim chats with his partner Victoria Godfrey in their home (below). For an expanded gallery of Tim’s furnitiure, visit SmittysHardwoods.com.

Welcoming the Winter Wonderland A gleaming blanket of snow is beautiful, but how can I temper its harsh glare? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful winter views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your brilliant winter views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of freshly fallen snow, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.
Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

Very good location in Diamond Hill. Few steps to both entry and slopes. The views of the mountains and slopes are great!
Even so, Tim thinks the “throwbacks” aren’t gone. Not in music. Not in wood making. “As long as people want to be outdoors and appreciate nature, that’s something that will never die. Because there’s something about a piece of wood. People says there’s energy in rock. A lot of people believe rocks are truly alive. I truly believe there’s a certain energy for wood. There’s something graceful and beautiful about wood. You know, it’s nothing more than a giant vegetable when you think about it. It’s rooted in the earth just like a vegetable you would eat. Just takes much longer to grow.” BRL

GUNSLINGER
Upstairs, you might be pumping gas, contemplating the fried chicken, or snatching a couple of jars of Rappahannock oysters sitting in the white cooler. Down in the basement of Ashley’s Market on Route 151 in Greenfield, Barry Patrick’s working on a customer’s hunting rifle. “A gentleman had a problem with his gun not extracting the round,” Barry explained, a smirk beginning to appear from a corner of his mouth. Let’s just say it needed some cleaning. Which Barry’s happy to do. Along with general gunsmithing like boresighting and installing scopes. As for the name of his shop? Blame it on a heavy metal band his wife, Tammy listens to. continued on page 16

Hope and Courage for the New Year STORY by LYNN COFFEY
Christmas is over and thoughts of New Year’s resolutions are still fresh in my head. Never mind that last year’s resolution of losing ten pounds is still with me. The slate is clean and I get another do-over for 2013… right after the last of the holiday candy is consumed and the carton of calorie-laden egg nog is drained! For Tommy and Yvette, the New Year has started off with a new name for the paper we’ve all come to know and love and call our own. Don’t think of the change as losing touch with people from Nelson but gaining a whole batch of different people from surrounding counties as well. Encourage the Staffords in the Blue Ridge Life magazine just like you did for Nelson County Life as they endeavor to bring us new and interesting material to read in the months to come. That should be everyone’s goal in 2013; to encourage those who need it most. It doesn’t cost us anything but a few words and the time it takes to say them or one simple act of kindness to make a huge difference in a person giving up or moving forward. I’ll give you an example. The Backroads newspaper was in its fifth year when the unthinkable happened. On the morning of March 20, 1986, I left the house to make my monthly deliveries to the advertisers who supported the paper and when I came home… there was no home. A fire had completely destroyed the structure

and everything I needed to run my business in one afternoon. Luckily my daughter was at school at the time and I was grateful no one was injured but standing at the top of the driveway, staring down at the charred remains of what used to be where we lived, I’ve never had such a sinking feeling of loss. People were generous and I appreciated the gifts of money and household items that folks gave us to start over with but I began having doubts about ever continuing the newspaper. I lost my camera, all the original copies of Backroads, my subscription list and the worst lick of all… photographs of those I had interviewed over the years. Also the April 1986 edition of the paper was lying on my kitchen table, ready to be delivered to the printer. I agonized over that, berating myself for not putting it in my Bronco where it would have been safe until I could have delivered it the next day. It was all so overwhelming and my heart was sad at the prospect of quitting but I didn’t think I had a choice. People said, “Just take six months off and start again,” but I knew if I stopped, the Backroads was done. While I was in this understandably despondent mood, a package addressed to me arrived at the post office and I went to pick it up. It was wrapped in plain brown paper and tied up with white string. I sat on the steps of our new place and unwrapped what appeared to be a book. Closer inspection revealed a well-worn dictionary; The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, College Edition, to be exact, with a note attached that said, “Don’t quit the Backroads.” The note was unsigned and at that moment, something rose up inside of me, a strength I had never known before and gave me courage to start again, amid the obvious obstacles. That’s not all. Ten years later, as I was thumbing through the old dictionary looking for a correct spelling, I came upon two words that were previously highlighted that I had never noticed before; HOPE and COURAGE. Let me tell you what those words said and what they meant to me, even after all those years. Hope is defined as, “the feeling that what is desired is also possible or that events may turn out for the best. To look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence.” Courage stated, “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty and danger with firmness and without fear. Courage permits a person to face difficulties with daring, boldness and bravery.” And with God’s protective hand, that’s exactly what happened. Today Billy asked to borrow my dictionary. He was appalled at its shabby appearance and commented that maybe I needed a new one for Christmas. “No,” I told him, “I don’t want a replacement. I’ll just tape it back together and it will be okay.” I admit, it looks pretty bad but I cannot bring myself to part with the old book. It came at a time when I needed it most, from an insightful person I never knew but always loved for what they took the time to do. And because of that one caring act, the Backroads newspaper finished its 25 year run and three books about the vanishing mountain culture of our area have been preserved for future generations. Make the encouraging words Hope and Courage your goal for the New Year. Give them freely… BRL

Real estate tax relief and/or exemptions for qualifying Nelson County residents
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
The holidays are fun, but the aftermath may leave you looking for a way to save. Savings, in the form of real estate tax relief, may be just around the corner for some residents of Nelson County. Relief programs are offered to the elderly and disabled; disabled veterans may even be tax exempt. Even if you don’t fall into one of these groups, you may have land that qualifies you for a tax break. When there are only a few things that are certain such as life, death, and taxes, it sure is a relief to know that discounts could be on the horizon for those who apply and qualify. May you kick off the New Year with one of these tax saving opportunities. Relief for the elderly and disabled: Who? The minimum age for an elderly applicant is 65. A disabled applicant is an individual who has been declared 100% disabled by the Social Security Board. Qualifications? Applicant must occupy the
Marlo Allen
home as a primary residence. The total household income of everyone living in the home cannot exceed $50,000. Income sources include savings, retirement, social security, and all other sources. If applicant has a family member living with them, than the first $6,000 of that person’s income is exempt from the calculation. Net worth cannot exceed $100,000; the home and 1 acre of land are excluded from the net worth calculation. Savings? Tax relief is based on a sliding scale and provides a 10-80% savings. When? Submit application between January 2 and February 15, 2013. Yearly application is required as tax relief is based on fluctuating variables such as income and assets. Exemption for disabled veterans: Who? Applicant must reside in the home as a primary residence and be certified as a veteran and 100% disabled. The US Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency must provide a letter to certify
•
that the applicant is 100% disabled. A surviving spouse of the 100% disabled veteran may also qualify if the veteran died after Jan. 1, 2011 and the tax exemption was already in place. Savings? Qualifying applicant will receive total exemption from paying real estate taxes on the house and 1 acre home site. When? Can be submitted anytime. However, it is best to submit early in the year before tax bills are mailed. Once qualified the program automatically renews. Land use eligibility and savings: Who? Residents with qualifying acreage; land calculated after subtracting 1 acre home site. Qualifications? Agricultural; minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of plants or animals such as beef cattle, poultry, hay, etc… Horticultural, minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of fruits, vegetables, nursery, or floral products, etc… Forest; 20 acre minimum devoted to tree growth (can be timbered) Savings? Some tax payers have had their
434-996-3525

tax bill cut in half; savings is variable as it is dependent upon the land classification and values. Note: Repayment of savings (up to past 6 years) can occur in the form of a roll back tax penalty if the land use is changed. For example, land that is taken out of land use and subdivided for residential purposes would be subject to the penalty. When? Applications are typically due by Dec. 31st for review by the land use committee in February. Non refundable application fee is $50 per parcel plus 25 cent per acre. Renew every 6 years upon renewal notice. Contact the Commissioner of Revenue office at 434-263-7070 for additional information or applications. May you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. LOWESVILLE
[ amherst county ]
STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES
Two years ago, Mark took a break from his winter chore of cutting wood and decided to use his chain saw a little bit differently. In Lowesville, on the Nelson – Amherst line, Mark and Dana Poleski have a piece of paradise they call, Sleepy Hollow. It’s here, surrounded by wooden statues of all shapes, colors and sizes, that Mark creates his wooden works of art. In this town, finding large trees isn’t a difficult task, but it never hurts to have friends in the business. “I get the logs from people in the area that do tree work and different logging operations,” Mark explained.

THE BEARS OF
SLEEPY HOLLOW
And since the majority of his pieces are created by special order, every sculpture is one-of-a-kind and shaped by hand or with the help of just a couple tools. “I use a chain saw, a 4.5 inch grinder, chisels, and a Dremel tool. Just about anything that will remove wood,” said Mark. “And then I paint ‘em or burn ‘em myself. Then I put outdoor polyurethane on ‘em to seal them up. Sometimes I’ll spray ‘em down with some Ortho-max just to kill the bugs in ‘em. Some of the stuff I get has blown down because of a storm, so it’s not a perfect piece of wood.” Having only started this artistic medium at the beginning of 2010, practice is clearly not a necessity
for Mark, who has already mastered the carving process. “I didn’t really fool with it much until the beginning of 2011 when I did my sister’s bear. After that I started doing a lot. I like practice drawing and rendering, so I got that down. Now I just do 3D sculptures. It consumes me,” said Mark. Working off of an artist’s eye and raw talent, Mark will even tell you that these carvings are “easy” for him, taking only between two to seven days to create a sculpture. “He’s been an artist his whole life,” said his wife, Dana. “He’s so good at the proportions and getting everything just right”. Fully supportive of Mark’s hobby, Dana also promotes his art by managing the Sleepy Hollow Art website, www.SleepyHollowArt.com. Here you can find his portfolio, showing a range of animals such as bears, bald eagles, owls, foxes, and even a selection of Tiki heads. Special orders are welcome, and with Mark, no idea is too small. “There’s not a shape I can’t make,” said Mark. “That’s all it is, just a collection of shapes. It’s easy. Even if I won the lottery I’d still do this. I love it.” BRL

HOT AIR BALLOON PILOT. CHECK. MOM. CHECK. 3RD PLACE FINISHER IN FEMALE DIVISION OF WORLD’S TOUGHEST MUDDER.
hooyah! If you’ve ever worked out with Mandy Baskin at one of John McGuire’s early morning SEAL Team PT boot camp style workouts in Charlottesville, you know what the “hooyah” means. For Mandy, a hot air balloon pilot and owner of Monticello Country Ballooning, she got a major “hooyah” this year. Even though she was in great shape, her performance at last year’s World’s Toughest Mudder obstacle course racing event bummed her out. So she put on her big girl panties, bought a wet suit, and signed up for it again, finishing third in the world in the female division. continued on page 31
Starting on December 26, and continuing through January 6, each member will donate to the Blue Ridge Medical Center or the Nelson Food Pantry. We are also hopeful that our customers will chip in with a small donation of their own during the 12 Days of Christmas.

“I was very prepared emotionally. I was very prepared mentally,” Mandy said. “I really went up there with a lot of confidence and I think it came from doing it last year.” She completed six laps – each lap is 10 miles – in 22:21:28. The furthest she had ever run in her life was a marathon. And Mandy will tell you, she wasn’t in the greatest health leading up to this year’s event. A soleus injury was threatening to sideline her. “I couldn’t walk for two days. I literally could not even walk. I could not put any pressure or weight on my leg. So I went up there with ice packs and had no idea as to how I was even going to run the damn thing.” It’s not like she hadn’t experienced setbacks before. Being a commercial pilot since the age of 23, Mandy said that experience alone accounted for confidence over the years. “I’m used to functioning and having to be on my A-game sometimes on little sleep. I’m used to being on my A-game when conditions are not ideal and can deteriorate very quickly in dealing with the weather and dealing with the responsibility of carrying passengers.”
Mandy Baskin of Gordonsville, Virginia carries a cinder block and crawled through plenty of mud to finish third in the female division of this year’s World’s Toughest Mudder in Englishtown, NJ. Her boyfriend, Mark Smith, was part of her support team and took these pictures.

As for future competitions? She’s planning to compete in a string of Spartan Race events. That obstacle race series offers prize money and with her third place finishing at WTM, Mandy feels she’s got a good chance of bringing home some dough. “I’m in. I’ve got a taste for it now.” Hooyah! BRL

A whole lot of beauty is waiting just on the other side of these ten items. Some are obvious, some are not so easy. Resolve to make 2013 your best garden year yet! 1) pH and grass. Take your soil sample and follow the recommendations. The sample is cheap and will save you tons of money on fertilizer and seed – both of which are useless if the pH is not addressed. Apply your fertilizer in the fall in three full applications starting in September and with each application separated by a rain event AND at least two weeks. No spring or summer applications are necessary. 2) Apply your crabgrass preventer to your lawn at petal fall on forsythia. Crabgrass is not that hard to control – if you apply your crabgrass preventer on a timely manner. Don’t forget that one application is not enough handle the whole season. Typically you will need a second application around 6-8 weeks after the first application. 3) Amend your soil before you plant. Don’t buy a $50 dollar plant and install it in a $.50 cent hole. If you want your plants to thrive amend your soil liberally with compost, gypsum, peat moss, organic fertilizer and high grade topsoil. 4) Add more grass. Grass adds a sense of simplicity and offers a common denominator that all landscapes need. The ebb and flow of landscape grass is one of my favorite features in some of my best designs. Yes you have to maintain it, but that mulch is not cheap and the weeds, well, you do the math… 5) Take into account the mature growth of your plant. I cannot tell you the number of plants that we remove each year that were planted too close to a structure. A rule of thumb for plants is to know the ul-
timate width, divide it by 2 and use this number as the distance from your home you can comfortably install your new plant. 6) Make your own compost. One of the best investments you can make is to buy a leaf shredder and apply the remnants of your trees to your landscape. Two words, black gold. 7) Go native. One day, although maybe years from now, we are going to wake up and see homes and cultivated plants littering our countryside with just distant memories of fields of trillium, bloodroot, ferns and butterfly weed. Establish a native area, add tons of leaf litter and organic matter (see No.6 above) and plant liberally. (do not mulch native woodland plants) 8) Hold the mulch. Yes, organic matter will be delivered to your lawn as the mulch decomposes, but too much mulch often suffocates perennials, shrubs and tree alike. I find it much more appealing and beneficial to add mulch on year one, compost on year two and then mulch again the following year. Terrible for business, great for your landscape! 9) Go easy on the curves. Yes, curves in the landscape are nice, but if you can’t drive them with your SUV, they are too wavy. Long flowing lines are easy on the eye, are more inviting and are the foundation to a simple design. 10) Add some hardscape. Nothing adds more curb appeal and ultimate value to your home than stonework and no landscape is complete without some form of hardscape – birdhouse, birdbath, figurine, column, etc. A modest planting around nice stonework is more valuable and appealing than an arboretum without any stonework .

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have a hard time getting the family together for meals. Is this a big deal? I am a huge fan of family meals, especially dinner. This is one of my favorite parts of the day. It is a time when we all sit down, share a meal and talk. It changes the meal from being just about food to a family experience where we learn about each other and share our day. In order for the family dinner to work you need to get everyone together, put the food out, turn off the TV and put away all cell phones and electronic games. After that you let things happen. Have everyone tell something about their day that they liked, and something that they did not like. We often play an alphabet game where we go around the table and each word starts with the next letter of the alphabet. The choice of topics is endless. For example, fruits – a-apple, b-banana, c-cantaloupe, etc. Some letters are really tricky! When you sit down together without the distraction of media
and electronics, meal time is not just about eating and moving on to the next part of the day. The time is about being together and communicating as a family. You get to learn about each other, and you’ll be amazed by what gets shared. Studies done researching family meals and their effects on teenagers show that teenagers who regularly eat dinner with their family are less likely to have tried tobacco, alcohol or other drugs, and less likely to have friends who use these substances. These same teenagers also tend to have better academic performance. Not every family is able to get together every day for dinner. Schedules do not always allow for this. If this is not workable, set aside another time that the family can get together and talk. It really is worth the effort. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Out with old, In with the New At the end of the year, in the news and in newspapers, there is usually a segment or article that pertains to what’s old and out of fashion and what is new and hip for the New Year. It usually relates to clothes, movie stars, restaurants, gadgets and other categories. So what’s old and out of style in fitness and what is new and going to make us stronger with more energy? This is a really good question and this is a great time to assess your personal fitness program. Because of each of us in unique, the answers are different for everyone. Where to start? First, examine the aspects of your program that you enjoy. Keep those and seek to adjust that portion to challenge yourself. For example, if you enjoy walking 30 minutes daily. Think about walking faster, monitoring your heart rate to ensure that you are exercising at the appropriate pace for maximum benefit. Try interval training. Secondly, write down what you don’t enjoy about your program
or aspects that have been successful. Consult with a professional to obtain input about to change your program, add a class, or overcome barriers to exercise. We all need a coach to guide every now and then when we get sidetracked. These fitness assessments are vital to become knowledgeable about your physical capabilities in every stage of life just as you would assess your finances, perform car maintenance or home maintenance. You are ensuring that this one time gift of a body runs as well as you take care of it. It is always helpful to evaluate your exercise program whether you are starting to exercise or a lifelong exerciser. The body changes over time and it is important to fit the program with each individual and his/her needs and modify the exercises periodically so the body is challenged appropriately. Agnes F.
