from
thepublisher’sdog I’m in an awkward spot, you see. My owner, Tommy, used to be a weather man on television and now he plays one on the internet. What he doesn’t understand is that not only do I have softer ears and can run on all fours, but I could have told him all along that we would have snow closer to spring. And as his faithful companion, I don’t really want to bite the hand that feeds me. But I do have a keyboard and don’t think I haven’t been studying how Yvette uses the thing. Which by the way, she attacks it like I do a squirrel. And it often sounds like she is talking to herself as she types. Lord knows what she’s thinking. Women are strange. The kids? Don’t you worry. They’ll be fine as long as I’m around. Their parents are clueless. When I’ve got my snout in Adam or Peyton’s ears and they’re giggling, I’m not sniffing their ear wax as their parents would assume. I am whispering wisdom. 1) When a school system cancels classes on the threat of snow, expect rain. 2) That dinner you gave me was pretty good, kid. 3) Adam and Peyton, I’m glad you like the kombucha but please don’t
feed it to me. It gives me the burps. 4) There’s nothing better than scratches behind the ear. Actually, there is. But ear scratches are pretty close to heaven. 5) Adam and Peyton, did you ever notice that when your mother splits a “cookie bar” with you, she does it in thirds? Yep. Neither you nor I are getting that extra piece. 6) Peyton, I knew a poodle once with curls like yours. And she broke my heart. 7) Adam, I know a Belgian Malinoise you remind me of. I can see why you are friends. Finally, to my dad: Yes, you are missing a pair of Adam’s shoes and Peyton’s Pinky bear keeps disappearing mysteriously. I can solve both mysteries if you deliver some warm weather. April Fools! (8 years and running) Nick Stafford APRIL 2013 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

Springtime: Transition Wines At the end of March or the start of April, and of late sometimes in February too, there is something in the air that signals spring is imminent. This something has less to do with warm temperatures than it does with a subtle shift and softness that speaks of winter’s ebbing tide and a new season about to be born. Or perhaps more accurately, about to give birth: to buds, blossoms, butterflies and bunnies…to life. In the predawn hours there’s the cool new air, and as dusk descends at the close of the day there’s the promise of the peepers. What does all this have to do with wine? Perhaps nothing and everything. As we mark the passage of time with tradition and ritual, we seek also to differentiate time past from time present and time yet to be, giving us a sense of control over what will always be unknowable. For millennia, wine has been used in symbolic ceremony and ritual. In spring the ancient Greeks celebrated their new year and the Anethesteria, one of four festivals which made up the Dionysia in honor of Dionysus,
wine, inspiration, creativity and fertility. The Anethesteria was the Festival of the Vine Flower: three days of festivities celebrating the opening of the wine jugs from the previous crop. For the Greeks it was not only the final product which was sacred, but the vineyard and the process whereby wine was created from earth through the changing of seasons. Perhaps in modern times, the seasons more than anything else mirror back to us the paradox of change. April means transition time. But no need to renounce your flannel P.J.s for the flimsy nightie anymore than you must renounce red for white or rosé. Drink all three: Nativ Falaghina, 2011 – Falaghina thrives in southern Italy, in Basilicata and particularly in Campania where the vineyards around Mount Vesuvius offer rich volcanic soils adding minerality to the wines. This ancient vine is most likely the basis for Falernum of classical Rome, so prized and esteemed by the Romans. Clean, crisp yet round and smooth with distinct notes of honeysuckle. Organic. $14
HISTORIC
PHARSALIA
Domaine de Fontsainte, Gris de Gris, 2012 – A vin gris is a rosé yet differs from rosé in color (usually paler) and weight (usually lighter.) This one comes from the Languedoc’s Corbières where summers are hot and the perfect antidote is a chilled glass of rosé. This wine is testimony to the high quality possible in the hot and sunny region of so many vines. Although bone dry, look for aromas of raspberry followed by exotic notes of pineapple and mango. $19 Nativ Aglianico, Irpinia, 2009 – A favorite red grape of mine, again from Campania. Aglianico, pronounced ah-LYAH-nee-kohl, was planted in the region as early as the 7th century BCE and is seeing a bit of a revival. Medium-bodied, with juicy cherry fruit, it’s smooth with slight notes of coffee and chocolate. Quite stunning. Organic. $20 And gentle April comes and goes and we are still its fools.

SWOOPE
[ augusta county ] STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER
By the time your automatic coffee maker clicks on, Ben and Kristen Beichler have been busy getting your cream ready. The mornings of a dairy farmer are governed by
nature’s alarm clock.
APRIL 2013
Blue Ridge LIFE
9
Ben hoists Misty after trying to get her to bottle feed with his wife Kristen. The couple bottle feed their calves as much cows milk as they’ll drink in order for them to grow well and become good grazers. Managing dairy cows on grass is different than a typical dairy where the cows would also be fed grain.
“A lot of people are attracted to the romance of agricultural homesteading, that whole outdoor living lifestyle. The romance and the reality are two different things.” And Ben isn’t kidding. You can wake up to a calm morning with cows mooing only to find yourself soaking wet from an afternoon thunderstorm, covered in manure. “Not trying to make farming sound doom and gloom, and it was very much the romance of farming that I think attracted both Kristen and I,” Ben explained. “The realities of farming as a job, a career, and a life ... it can be daunting at times even for those that passionately love and enjoy it like Kristen and I.” After short-lived stints at college (they both admit, it wasn’t for them), they ended up interning at Polyface Farms in Swoope, the sustainable agriculture operation run by Joel Salatin, a selfdescribed “lunatic farmer.” “Lunatic” because the cows enjoy a grass-fed diet in open fields instead of feed lots. “Lunatic” because chickens spend their lives breathing fresh air and are moved to fresh pasture daily. “Lunatic” because Ben and Kristen aren’t saddled with start-up debt. They are married to themselves, not to a factory farm contract.

Kristen Beichler breaks open a bale of hay for the dairy cows at Creambrook Farm in Swoope.
Though Kristen grew up in the city or a suburb, her life changed at the age of 13 when her family started a dairy farm in Manquin, a small community in King William County located between Richmond and Tappahannock. By the time she was 16, she knew she’d be farming. “I graduated high school from home school and did a year of college. Then asked my parents if I could take a summer and a semester off to go to Polyface. I never came back.”
And that’s where she fell in love with farming and with Ben, who was a familiar face there. They married in January 2012, not too long after Kristen finished her internship at Polyface. “We sat down and had a long conversation about rebranding the business and all of that,” Ben said. As a single man, he had come up with a name: Double B Acres. “At [this] point, we were also adding dairy to it and decided to change the name to Creambrook Farm.”
“We both feel like farming is our calling,” Kristen said. “We both believe God called us to do this in our life. We definitely keep up with the business, so we’ll see which doors open and where we are going to go.” For now, the couple rents a farm just two miles away from Polyface. They have a herdshare dairy program where Creambrook’s customers can have access to raw milk, which can be delivered to homes on a weekly basis. continued on page 13
Ben Beichler loads hay onto the back of his antique tractor to feed the cows after the morning milking chores. Ben uses old equipment that’s been refurbished, to avoid going into debt. Ben and his wife also raise Freedom Ranger chickens, and Ben also operates a portable sawmill.

Letting in the spring light The spring color palette is breathtaking, but how can I keep the bright colors in my house from fading? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful spring views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your breathtaking spring views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of budding trees 0, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.
Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

They also raise freedom ranger broilers and pasture turkeys. During the slower winter months, Ben does custom mill work on a portable saw mill, turning trees and logs into lumber. “Right now we’re still a very young farm. This is the beginning of our third year in business. At this point we are still year by year laying the foundation blocks,” Ben said. “I always had the childhood dream of be-
ing a farmer but never actually saw a way to become one. It requires so much equity and money and experience and all of that. It wasn’t until I came across Polyface that I saw a way possible for someone who didn’t start off as a farmer to become one. That was the beginning of the path for me.” Stealing a line from a Robert Frost poem, “And that has made all the difference.” BRL

Not long ago, Nelson County potter Kevin Crowe received a call from someone wanting to know if the clay Crowe uses in his pottery was anti-biotic, or was it non-toxic. The caller wanted to grow something and had discovered that Virginia clay might be ideal for it. He wanted to grow coral – in Central Virginia. Coral are marine animals that live in colonies, mainly in tropical oceans, building colorfully sculpted reefs from the calcium carbonate that make up their external skeletons. Corals may be blue, green, purple, orange, yellow, white or red, in clusters ranging from a few inches to hundreds of feet. Corals can be hard or soft. Sea fans wave. Tree corals look like small trees and flowers. Stag horn and elk horn coral look like branches or antlers. Pillar coral looks like fuzzy tubes. Table coral spreads out. Brain coral looks like – well, brains. So what are they doing in Central Virginia? Enter Craig Downs, who spent most of his youth in the Philippines swimming and exploring coral reefs. He received his Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology from the University of Hawaii. Downs maintained his interest in corals as a scientist and is now executive director of the Global Coral Repository. The GCR is one of a number of non-profit organizations Downs has founded, including Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, which focuses on eco-toxicology, forensic investigations, and, among other things, looks for the contribution of pollution behind the decline of coral reefs all over the world. Many species of fish from both tropical and non-tropical areas require coral reefs as habitat, and these fish are critical for the diet of millions of people in the Caribbean and around the globe. Coral reefs are found in over 100 countries and cover an area larger than the state of Texas. Because corals turn carbon dioxide into limestone, they control the amount of CO2 in ocean water. Without coral the amount of CO2 would rise drastically and affect all living things on Earth. In the form of barrier reefs, corals protect coastlines from storm damage
r co^ al country
Downs’ research led him to figure out a way to grow coral, not just for research purposes but to provide a source for reef restoration. On that path he has had to invent or adapt technologies to address specific environmental problems. Like using local clay as a medium for growing it. Coral degradation started to become noticeable in the mid1990s, particularly in dense tourist areas. Downs was asked by the National Park Service (NPS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to conduct a study in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He went to Trunk Bay on St. Johns, a beautiful crescent beach that averaged 2,000 visitors continued on page 16

a day, many from cruise ships docking at nearby St. Thomas. Trunk Bay was famous for its underwater snorkel trail made up of various types of coral. Talking to colleagues at a grocery store in Cruz Bay, St. Johns, about why the coral was dying, Downs was overheard by a local Rastafarian. “Mon, it’s the tourists,” the Rasta said. A sheen of oil-like film on the surface of Trunk Bay drew Downs’ attention. He collected samples. He also noticed that baby corals were absent on the reef. When adult corals are present but baby and juvenile corals are absent, the reef will perish within a generation because the population cannot sustain itself. Downs has designated these reefs as “zombies” because they are dead. We just don’t see them as such yet. “When you do a biopsy sample on a coral reef it creates a divot. Healthy corals will regenerate its tissue and the divot disappears in three or four months. But in Trunk Bay, over three years (2006-09) there was no regeneration. Something was disrupting the healing process,” Downs says. Downs’ team sampled nearby Hawks Bay and Kaneel Bay. Later they did sampling at in Hawaii at Ala Moana Bay in Honolulu. All are heavily visited by tourists. One culprit turned out to be sunscreen. Or rather, an ingredient in sunscreen called benzophenone, listed in Europe, though not in the U.S.A., as a carcinogen. Downs found that a concentration of 25 parts per billion (ppb)of benzophenone has a toxic effect on corals. He had found 98 ppb around the reef in Trunk Bay before tourists arrive and 1,395 ppb closer to shore. He found similar concentrations in tourist beaches in Hawaii and in the Red Sea; beaches that used to contain an abundance of coral, but most of it had died. Downs said benzophenone is an endocrine disrupter and causes corals to encase themselves in skeleton, basically sealing themselves in their own coffins, where they then sink and die. According to the Coral Reef Alliance and several other organizations, 80 percent of the coral reefs in the Caribbean have disappeared in the last 30 years. In less than 27 years, more than 50 percent of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has disappeared. In 2010, it was estimated that the Florida Keys have lost more than 95 percent of its coral cover. Worldwide reports indicate that 70 percent of coral reefs are endangered by human-associated activities not associated with global climate change. Some of this has been caused by pollution from sewage coming from land and from ships and yachts. Downs wants to do more research into sunscreens

– there are as many as nine other active ingredients in addition to benzophenone. None of these chemicals have been tested to determine their threat to coral reef health. But Downs believes he can work with the personalcare product industry to develop safe products and he wants to develop an “OceanSafe” certification program and an educational marketing program aimed at tourists. He believes there are a number of countries, particularly in the Caribbean, who will sign on, pointing to Mexico’s ban on sunscreen lotions in federally managed coral reef areas like Cozumel. He also believes he can enlist the cruise ship industry and other tourist-dependant businesses to sign on to “OceanSafe.” The U.S National Park Service is already engaged in trying to reduce the sunscreen load in all National Parks containing coral reefs, thanks to Downs’ research.

Meanwhile, here in Central Virginia, Downs is establishing the Global Coral Repository in conjunction with colleagues at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, which will have a duplicate facility. The repository will have coral samples from all over the world that will allow governments to restore damaged coral reefs. Downs wants to expand the repository so it can handle all 1,000 or more species of coral. He’d also like to build a coral reef public aquarium open to the public and expand the capacity of his laboratory to do forensic research into the factors that are endangering corals and the marine life dependant on them. In February 2012 I wrote a story about Sonny Taylor, Don’s brother, who had passed away and was buried the traditional mountain way in the White Rock Cemetery not far from where he and his two brothers were raised up. Sonny was beloved by his family and friends but he had been ill for quite a while and folks had a chance to adjust their hearts over a period of time to what we knew was coming. With Don, illness came suddenly and took everyone by surprise. We didn’t have a chance to grasp what was happening before he was gone. Seems like he was okay one week and the next, he was down. I was touched at the stream of men who came to the house each day to visit Don even though much of the time he would drift into sleep. While awake he bantered back and forth to the good natured jabs the men threw at him but their underlying concern was unmistakable. They clearly loved this man they grew up around, were related to, and shared lifetime careers in the construction and logging trades. Not knowing exactly what to do, these tough men came in the early morning hours bringing Don biscuits and sausage gravy or a gift of food they or their wives prepared and brought along. They talked about near misses they all had in the dangerous job of logging, the sport of bear hunting and the big trucks and fast cars they owned throughout the years. They talked about anything and everything except the dreaded disease that was taking one of their own. At times like these, we all come to realize our own mortality and begin to reflect more on how short our earthly life is

and how long eternity will be. Don and his wife Sue regularly attended Evergreen Christian Church on the North Fork of the Tye River so he knew what God expected of him and tried his best to live it. Don was born on October 25, 1944, the second son of three born to Orcie and Gladys Coffey Taylor. The Taylors lived in a cabin overlooking the Tye River in the tiny mountain hamlet known as White Rock. Their whole world revolved around family and neighbors within the village that boasted its own church, school, grist mill, saw mill and country store all within a stone’s throw radius. When he was eight years old, Don’s family moved to the Stuarts Draft area and that’s where he lived for the rest of his life but the call of the mountains never left his soul and he spent a good bit of time back on the North Fork, at the family cabin. I got to know Don and his family back in the early 1980s when the opening day of trout season was a big celebration in White Rock. The Friday night before opening day everyone gathered at the camps along the river to visit, make music and eat the enormous amount of food set out on kitchen tables. The little village of White Rock came alive and reminded me of a country fair at nighttime with people wandering up and down the narrow gravel road. I loved it and that’s where I got to know a lot of the mountain people. Through their eyes and words, I was drawn to a time in history I was never part of but found a heart connection to, by those who actually lived it. Don Taylor was a man who lived it, along with his parents and grandparents and I have been unbelievably blessed not only to have known all three generations but privy to write their stories in the Backroads newspaper for 25 years and the Backroads books as well. So our hearts sank as we drove up to the Taylor home early on Saturday morning, March 2, and saw hospice equipment being carried out of the house. I hugged Don’s nephew, Jesse Taylor, and the sadness in his eyes told me what we didn’t want to hear. Don had passed just an hour earlier. We went in and paid our respects to Sue and all the relatives who had come, feeling stunned and unable to put those feelings into words that properly conveyed what our hearts felt. All the mountain people were at Don’s funeral to pay homage to a man small in stature but bigger than life. In his 68 years of living he made a lot of friends and the Taylors also opened the door to their home as well as their hearts to nephews, nieces and a young man named Chris who was raised like their own. Don’s burial took place at the White Rock Cemetery, situated high on a bluff overlooking the river. They laid him under the towering pines, next to his brother, parents, his grandparents and all the other people who had roots along the North Fork in Nelson County and wanted to return to them one final time. I weep for the loss of Don but I weep more for the passing of the mountain culture itself. Like the swift momentum of toppling Dominoes, each one that falls takes with it a part of Virginia history that can never be duplicated or replaced. Don leaves a lasting legacy of that culture with each person blessed to have known him and called him their friend. Take your rest, brother, and may we who are left take comfort, knowing one day we will be reunited at last, never more to part. BRL

Make your home steal the show
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
When was the last time you primped, fluffed, or staged your home? Staging your home for a sale should be a priority for any seller who actually plans on selling. The spring forecast is always favorable for increased buyer activity. However, the spring market also attracts more sellers and thus more competition. In a balanced housing market, Nelson County may have 180 homes for sale. There are currently more than 300 residential properties on the market. While the task may be daunting, the rewards can be great; here are a few tips to help you prepare your home for the “sold” sign. Spring clean; a clean home appears to be a well cared for home. Before staging, a house must first be thoroughly cleaned and painted or repaired as needed. Strip to the bare essentials; remove or thin books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear the
Marlo Allen
countertops. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. Depersonalize; pack away anything that makes the house “yours” instead of “theirs”. Take down the wall of family photos and put away the heirlooms and collectibles. Create positive focal points; take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight the key rooms; kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter,
clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets. Thoroughly clean the entire kitchen and then add the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and freshen a bathroom with new towels, shower curtain, bath mats, candles, and flowers. Don’t forget the outside; outdoor living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat your deck, porch, or patio like another room in the house. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Spruce up the appeal; room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, flowers, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets and soft fabrics. Arrange fresh flowers; fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good. Consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk,
434-996-3525
or indoors on a foyer stand, dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser. Strive for cheerful and bright; turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing bulky drapes or window coverings to bring the outside indoors. Appeal to all the senses; make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. Buyers have a multitude of options. If you want your home to steal the show, you had better get to work! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

BITES & FLIGHTS Saturday, April 27th from 6:30 - 8:30pm
5 delectable “bites” (small plates) paired with a flight of Wintergreen Winery’s hand crafted wines
snapshots Back in April 1999, then 17 year old Sarah Leake Shelton walked into the doors of Basic Necessities for the first time. It would be the start of her career there, on and off, for a period of 14 years. Fast forward to the end of March 2013 and Sarah Leake Shelton walked out the doors of Basic Necessities as an employee for the very last time. “Seriously, the friendships will be the big thing about leaving. Even the girls I work with. All of us working here for years. That’ll be hard to walk away from,” Sarah told us late last week parked at the two top table sitting in the front window of Basic. (Known as “Basics” to the locals) “Honestly. I missed it when I was in Texas. The biggest thing I will miss is the customer / friend relationships that I’ve grown. They’re not just customers, they’ve become my friends and a part of my life. That’ll be the big thing that I’ll miss,” Sarah said. For us here at Blue Ridge Life, it’s more than just a manager of a restaurant leaving. It’s a longtime friend as well. Most of you who read our web edition or the printed magazine know our kids have essentially grown up there with Sarah. Now, they’ll have to crash her new gig at The Melting Pot in Charlottesville. We wish you the best!

CRIMSON RIDGE NEWS
BUILDING PLANS The building permit for construction of a permanent cidery on the hill on our farm overlooking the Rockfish River was approved and construction was ready to begin, but Bold Rock already needs to expand! The plans have gone back to the architects for an addition on the east end of the building. This rustic, elegant timber frame barn, depicted on the bottle labels of all Bold Rock Hard Ciders, will have a tasting room and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall for viewing cider making activities while enjoying light food offerings from our kitchen! Meanwhile, visit us at our two barns in Nellysford.
ROCK BOLDLY! The Virginia Winery Association held their 2013 Virginia Governor’s Cup in February. Bold Rock is proud to announce that Crimson Ridge Vat No. 1 earned a silver medal, the highest award given in this category this year. Just a week after that win, Bold Rock Cidery bottled Crimson Ridge Vintage Dry for the very first time. This deliciously dry companion to Crimson Ridge Vat No. 1 is available at the cidery and will be in limited release in stores soon.
Bold Rock is all about fun and great hard cider. John Washburn and Brian Shanks, the owners and founders of Bold Rock Hard Cider, along with the other Bold Rockers on staff, invite you to visit and experience Bold Rock for yourself. Check out www.boldrock.com and www.facebook/ BoldRockHardCider for more information and great photos. Then, join the fun!

Tucked back in the Faber foothills of Nelson County, the sound of power tools and “motivational” hard-rock tunes roars in the wind if you catch Jake Faison on the right day. Thursday to be exact: his day off.
When Jake’s not working as a prep chef at the Edge restaurant at Wintergreen Resort, he spends his spare time making chairs. “I collected skis for about three years. I saw just piles of them there and I was kind of wanting to recycle them in some way. Most of them end up in the landfill. There’s nobody in the area that I know of that actually recycles them,” Jake explained. “So, I was originally gonna just store them here, thinking I was gonna make a project like a fence or something. And then I ended up getting a little more motivated with them cause they kinda piled up,” admitted Jake laughably. Growing up in a family of skilled craftsman, Jake already knew how to work with his hands. He just needed a plan. “I started looking online at projects, saw a couple cool chairs. There weren’t really any plans that were free, so I watched a YouTube video of this kid and his dad making one out in Colorado. And

I just went from there. I really wasn’t trying to sell them and I hadn’t been advertising except for at the Edge,” said Jake, referring to a single chair that sits on display in the corner of the restaurant with no clues or indications of its origin or retail value. “I was talking with a coworker after I was coming up with the project and built the first one and he said, ‘Man, you oughta sell those’. I said, ‘Well, you know, I was just making ‘em’. So, they had mentioned maybe giving part of the proceeds to a charity,” Jake recounted. “Wounded Warriors is something I looked into before and had donated to before. My grandfather was a fighter pilot in World War II. I didn’t know him very long, I was young when he died, but I still respected what he did.” With absolutely nothing but good intentions in mind, it was full steam ahead for Faison Ski Recycle. “Now I’ve built thirteen chairs. And I have a set of plans that I can go by. I’ve got several ideas,
but the chairs and the wine racks have been selling. I haven’t really caught up yet. This chair [seen in pictures] resembles me being caught up. So, after I finish this one today then I’ll be free to build some other stuff that I’ve wanted to do”. And how does one procure such an exclusive item? “I’ve only had a Facebook page for about a week. Mostly it’s people just coming up to me and saying, ‘Hey, I want some of these.’” Jake’s also been fielding inquiries via email at applebrrymtn@ aol.com. So, in a matter of a six-hour time span, Jake is not only able to create a fully-functioning piece of art by repurposing materials that would normally be discarded and eventually become an environmental burden, he also donates 25% of the profits from each piece to a charity founded by vets, for vets. sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC
The Fall of the Impatien The shade garden just got a sign dropped in front of it with the neon flashing words ‘VACANCY’ written on it. No it has nothing to do with the fact that it is still too cold for annuals or that your Hellebore should be looking just fine or the fact that any other shade loving shrub is not perfectly at home here – it’s about your summer heirloom Impatiens and a disease that is impacting the home gardener with a force that will most likely completely remove them from the home landscape for a number of years. The plant is your heirloom Impatien, Impatien walleriana, and the disease is a nasty form of downy mildew that specifically targets them called Plasmopara obducens. You may have seen certain forms of downy mildew in your landscape before, on your garden phlox for example, but this particular strain specifically targets your heirloom Impatiens with a vengeance that will leave only the skeletal remains of your purchase in your shade garden and much worse, spread it to other plants. Although nursery growers, greenhouse ranges and even some landscape maintenance companies have in their arsenal chemicals that will control this particular strain, the home gardener, at the writing of this article, has no known over-the-counter controls to combat it. Symptoms are similar, to an extent with a similar strain of downy mildew; stunted growth, off-color foliage, light green leaves, leaf and flower drop and eventual stem collapse and death. The difference now is that your typical controls will no longer work and death is imminent. Even more worrisome is the disease’s ability to overwinter and remain in the garden for years. Therefore if the disease finds its way into your garden it will remain there in dormant spores in soil debris and mulch and move into and through the garden and other previously healthy plants with wind as the main carrier. Although sanitary measures around
the home garden can seriously stunt the disease, like buying initially disease free plants, washing tools with a 10% Clorox solution, washing boots and clothes after you leave the area, removing of diseased plants at the first sign of trouble, most all gardeners will fight an uphill battle that will eventually leave you exhausted (and probably bewildered) and your landscape vacant. The answer lies in moving away from this particular plant, Impatien walleriana, for a number of years and letting the disease eventually ‘starve’ itself to death. You will probably find that your garden center has discontinued this particular strain of impatiens this year anyhow. So what does this mean for your shade garden for 2013 and a number of years down the road? Our assessment of this is to move towards naturally resistant varieties of Impatiens and other shade annuals until the disease’s life cycle is spent or the chemical companies develop foliar sprays that will combat it much the same as other similar foliar born pathogens. Here is a quick list of plants that you should look to for a short-term fix. From the Impatien line of alternatives, the New Guinea Impatien has been around the longest. Although they are a bit more temperamental than these heirloom varieties, they will work just fine in the home landscape – in particular once May heat arrives. Unlike their heirloom cousin, some of these plants have variegation in the foliage which adds another interest to their usage in the home landscape. Other Impatiens that are similar to these are the SunPatiens. Available in a kaleidoscope of colors, these also have interesting foliage and offer a heat and humidity tolerance that will make them uniquely adaptable to our long hot and humid summers. Other plants to consider are Begonias, Coleus, Torenia, Lobelia, and Caladiums.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, I have pain in my right side from time to time. Could I have gall stones? You certainly could, and if you do I’m sorry to hear it! The gallbladder is a storage organ that sits under the liver on the right side of the upper belly. It is like a muscular bag that holds bile which is a juice that helps with fat digestion. When the ingredients in the juice are just right (just wrong) solids can form and become like little “stones.” In fact, a lot of people have these stones and never know it. But, for some they become a problem. The gall bladder squeezes when you eat a meal, particularly a fatty one, and forces the bile out through a little tube into the intestine. If you have gall stones, it isn’t hard to picture one of the stones getting shoved into the tube and then blocking it. So, the gallbladder is trying to force fluid out of a blocked up tube and that hurts! It can feel like an ache or even a sharp pain in the right upper belly.
Often the pain can be felt in the back or even right shoulder. When the gallbladder stops squeezing (usually 3 or 4 hours later) then the stone can drop back into the sack and the pain quits. But, eat another fatty meal and bam! On comes the pain again. Of course, it is not always that simple. Sometimes bad stuff happens like the stone gets stuck permanently in the tube which can cause lasting pain and fever. Or, sometimes pain that feels like it could be gallstone pain is something else such as a pulled muscle, heartburn, appendicitis, or even heart pain. That is why it is important to see your doctor if you do have symptoms like this. You need to find out what is causing your pain. If it does turn out to be the gallbladder, then fortunately it is fairly easy to fix with surgery or in some cases medicine. Hope this helps! It’s April. If you made health/fitness resolutions about 90 days ago, have you kept them so far? Statistically, only a small percentage of resolution-makers succeed. The neuroscience behind why people can’t keep resolutions is fascinating. In short, the prefrontal cortex is the area of the brain responsible for willpower. As much as people try and use sheer willpower to keep resolutions, the prefrontal cortex needs to be trained and new habits need to be established. An unconditioned prefrontal cortex will easily become overwhelmed and resolutions will be discarded. Do you want to hit the reset button and work toward challenging, yet reasonable fitness goals and focus on establishing lasting habits? You need to get S.M.A.R.T. about your goals.

S- specific, significant M- measured, meaningful, motivational A- attainable, acceptable R- realistic, rewarding, resultsoriented T- time-based, timely, trackable Here’s an example of a poorly written goal: I want to get into better shape. This goal isn’t S.M.A.R.T. and is likely to fail. Here’s a better goal: I’ll work to improve cardio and skeletomuscular endurance to allow for the successful completion of the 50-mile Bike MS charity race on June 2, 2013 by following an appropriate training and strengthening plan and organizing regular rides with others for accountability and motivation. That is a much S.M.A.R.T.er goal. It fits each of the five criteria and stands a much better chance at being met. The therapy and fitness team at Nelson Wellness Center can help you set and reach your fitness goals. You don’t have to wait until you’re hurt to come see the team. Prevention is the best medicine.
