thepublishers The poison ivy and ticks are worth our trips to Mystery Island. Every kid needs his hideaway. Adam and Peyton’s is a curvy stream that barely trickles behind our house. To our delight, nature has carved out a sandy peninsula that sits under the shade of a bank. It’s the place we found a fox’s back bone last year. This season we scored a leg bone from a deer. And then there’s the stuff that still kicks like the minnows, mud puppies and tad poles. I guess I could have turned this into a science lesson but sometimes all you need to do is sit and watch your kids throw around clumps of sand and squeal when the minnows dart out of the way. And nature has a way of getting back at you. When you venture off the deer path, you’re bound to run into the brambles that seem to be growing an inch an hour. Having two years on his sister, Adam’s pretty good and wiggling himself around the thorny vines. As for Peyton, lets just say she earned her Mystery Island stripes. At first nothing would stop Peyton from squirting these big alligator tears. That is, until we saw – think fast, mom! – the band-aid tree. What used to be a large tree had fallen on the other side of the stream.

Over the years, a layer of velvety moss spread over the top of it. “Look, Peyton. Feel with your fingers. Doesn’t it feel nice?!” You would have thought we had discovered the buried treasure on Mystery Island. “You see, kids, some things are thorny and some things are soft. Isn’t it nice to have a band-aid tree?” Of course by now, Adam is trying to figure out how he can peel off some of that moss and take it with him. Alas, the kids had worn themselves out and we got them ready for bed to dream sweet dreams of Mystery Island. Close your eyes, sweet children. Mommy needs a “band-aid tree” for her poison ivy. Enjoy! Go Green Literally. After the color explosion of flowering fruit trees in March and the flowers of April, the month of May, while gentle and soft, often presents us a landscape of monochromatic green. Paint your own May colors and let your paint brushes be a beautiful chilled bottle of amber rosé, the quintessential picnic wine. Going green in May means picnicking outdoors amongst the green. It can also mean going green for the environment with: Monte Bernardi’s, Fuori Strada Sangiovese, 2011 – which comes in a one-liter Tetra Pak not a glass bottle, 75% of which is paper, a renewable and recyclable resource. Tetra Pak cartons use 54% less energy, create 80% less greenhouse gasses, and produce 60% less solid waste compared to 750ml glass bottles. Grapes are handpicked, double sorted, and small-lotfermented using gravity flow. Liquid fruit notes of dried cranberry and dried cherry. $14 Veritas, Rosé, 2011 – Another great winemaker right here in our backyard is award-winning Emily Pelton of Veritas. This rosé is a beautiful blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc with cherry and raspberry on the nose. Grover Spradlin, of Augusta Springs croons a country song to his friend Dee Mays, of Staunton while Randy Turner of Staunton listens. Spradlin has been coming to Marino’s to play music and listen to the jams for 40 years.

In the thick crowd we see a woman with an instrument clutched under her arms. Her name is Marta Szuba, she lives here in Staunton, having moved from upstate New York eight years ago. People kept telling her she needed to go to Marino’s. “It just reminded me of what it was like when music was really swinging high back in the ‘70s. I came back about a year later and I haven’t stopped coming on a Tuesday since then.” Marta started out playing guitar until a group of guys convinced her they needed someone on washboard.

“If you had told me that’s what I was going to be doing, I would have said ‘You’re nuts.’” Occupied by a picking band, the only way to walk through the front room during a set is by shuffling sideways. And since that’s not easy to do, you might as well start a tab at the counter and grab a beer. Cash only, no plastic. PBRs and “Natty” Lights are $2.25. A Bud is $2.50. Heinekens are $3. They’re selling a lot of PBRs. “You get all kinds of characters in here. People have been coming here for 30 years.” People like Grover Spradlin of Augusta Springs,

who’s parked himself on a bench for the evening. Otherwise, it would have been standing room only. “Oh my goodness,” he starts. “Before I went in the military, I was coming in here in 1964 and I had to buy Pepsi instead of Old Milwaukee, and I had a friend that would come in older than I. He would buy the beer and I’d buy the Pepsi. We’d play music in the back room and switch while Arline Marino, bless her heart, and she would be over there serving food and stuff and didn’t catch us switchin.’ She said she caught us, but she never did catch me!”

Dwane Knowles of Staunton is a regular. He was at the center of the back room jam the same night Nathan Moore and Molly Murphy joined forces on kazoos.

Tuesday night was the start to Grover’s weekend, so you can imagine the fun he and his buds have had here. He gets nostalgic. “The things we used to do ... We’ve had foot races and arm wrestling, throwing tater bombs. We used to have a ball in here!” Pam Brooks was probably too young to be throwing tater bombs with Gordon. But her dad would bring her here as a little girl and they’d head to the back room behind the kitchen. “He would come in here when we were little and pick music in the back,” Pam said. “Set me up on – they used to have cases of beer stacked in the back – set me up here and play music.” Diner food + beer + live music. It seems like a simple formula but for the Marino family, keeping a mom & pop going isn’t as easy as it used to be. Their lunch crowd pales in comparison to what it was some 30 years ago. Tony Marino admits the economy isn’t what it used to be. Add to that an ABC fine triggered by the accidental sale of a beer to someone under 21. For a business operating on slim margins, a

$2000 fine can be the death knell. “At that time she was planning on not paying it and closing it up, and keeping it closed,” recalled Beanie Ruleman, Tony’s sister. That didn’t sit well with customers. Armed with a notebook and a pen and a superhuman ability to juggle cash, beer and a smile, Beanie’s role behind the counter was a big reason why Tuesday nights became so popular to begin with, according to her brother. “I think Beanie had the personality to draw the crowd and people started coming in playing music on her night,” Tony explained. “And then more people came in and it seemed like buddies started playing with buddies. And I’d say Beanie really somehow or another kicked this whole event off.” So customers started pooling their money together to pay off the fine. Right now, the joint’s still open but Beanie and Tony say their mother is tired (she had called it a night by the time the music had started). She has poured her life into this place. “My father died when I was nine and she’s carried the store on ever since,” recalled Tony, who’s 59 going on 60. “Raising seven kids, yes. Seven kids running that store

pretty much all day and all night.” The business has been in the family ever since “Grandfather Marino” started it the ‘40s. Tony was “pretty much the mopper,” he said, bringing in cases of beer and sweeping. Beanie began helping out when she was nine or ten. “I used to work there full time. When my husband retired I went to this a couple of days a week. Mama asked me to keep ‘em because she needed help on those days,” she said. These days Arline is a frail woman who is still very much the matriarch. Both Tony and Beanie are tight-lipped about her age. “Well, I’d mention that but she would break my neck,” Beanie told me. “Miss Arline ...” Grover begins, looking away as his mind travels back in time. “She has fed tramps off the street. They come in here and we call him Bag Man. Colonel Bag Man. And she would feed him and she is a very wonderful lady ...” Grover and I are chatting outside since the music, now coming from both the front and back rooms, is making it hard to carry on a conversation. “There’s nobody in the world that don’t come through these doors that’s not welcome,” he said. “I’ll tell you it’s the most beautiful place in the world. They come from Scottsville, Highland County, West Virginia.” “She raised seven children,” Grover said, peering through the window. “And all of them are my friends. Every one of them ... And what am I gonna do on Tuesdays?!” Marta says whatever happens – if a buyer comes in or if it shuts down – it will work itself out. “You wonder what’s going to happen to this group of people that come together. And what I’ve been told by other people who have been doing this a lot longer than me is that this is not the first place this jam was at and it won’t be the last place that this jam is going to be at ... Letting in the spring light The spring color palette is breathtaking, but how can I keep the bright colors in my house from fading? Writer’s Note: This is a continuation of sorts, to March’s column, Confession of a Dumpster Queen story, whereby I wrote about finding hidden treasures at the dumpster. This month I graduated to picking up items on the road. It’s weird, I know, but hey, it’s free!

I’m not sure when the habit of stopping to pick up items along the roadside developed but let’s just say it’s been an ongoing addiction throughout my life. I started out gathering the abundance of black rubber bungee cords that drop off the back of pickup trucks which have a multitude of uses such as securing trash can lids to discourage midnight raccoon raids. I then graduated to bigger and better things as I kept a sharp eye out for items lying in the middle of the road, driving to town. I have gotten a wealth of shirts and jackets that fit perfectly and after a good laundering, served me well for many years. One in particular was my favorite; a blue plaid flannel shirt that I always wore

when fly fishing in streams around the area. I found it laying in the road on Arch Avenue in Waynesboro back in the 1980s and I have it still. I also added to my summer ensemble, several T-shirts with highend logos on the front. Everything from Pepsi and Nike to a large Harley Davidson that made a perfect sleep shirt. The practice included leather dog leashes even though I am basically a dog-less person, heavy log chains when I didn’t have a log to my name and over the years, a plethora of watch caps and gloves, just in time for the winter season. Imagine my utter delight when I married a man who wasn’t above stopping in the middle of the road to let his bride scrounge what she might. I did embarrass him one time on a city street when we passed a fabulous wooden barrel out by the road for trash pickup that was all to pieces. We had already passed the house where the large barrel stood and I made him circle the block so I could jump out and snatch my find. I remember him slinking down in his seat while I claimed my prize and stepping on the accelerator before I got my door completely closed. Back home he patiently put the staves back in place and slid the wooden rim on tight to make a wonderful decoration on the front porch of our cabin. By this time he, too, was a confirmed roadside picker and one day when our granddaughter Renea was in the car with us we happened upon a small black object on the road. He slowed down to take a look and suddenly whipped the car around and grabbed up a very expensive leather motorcycle glove. A few hundred yards down lay another black object of the same size and sure enough, it was the opposite hand of the glove. We figured someone laid the gloves on the back of their bike and forgetting to put them on, they slid to the ground. While we were ohhing and ahhing over his exceptional find, Renea was mortified and I can still hear her laughing as she said, “Granddaddy, I can’t believe you stopped and got those gloves!” Since Billy is a bike rider, the gloves found a perfect home. But by far, the best item gleaned was a 12 foot fiberglass step ladder that was lying along the roadside that had no doubt, toppled off of a service truck of some kind. To be fair, we stopped and propped the ladder up against a tree and left it there, feeling sure the owner would come looking for it. Imagine our surprise when it was still there the next day when we went down the road. We were in our little Honda CRV but somehow managed to load the thing lengthwise into the car with the top step resting on the dashboard and the rest of it hanging out the back hatch window. It was a really nice piece of equipment that we didn’t need so we advertised it free in a local paper and were amazed when someone offered us a huge price for it. For that amount we offered to deliver it and everyone was happy. We told our son and daughter-in-law about our successful roadside pickup and subsequent sale and they about laughed their heads off over the deal. They now keep their eyes peeled while riding the roads ... BRL

FLIGHT BEHAVIOR For a novelist, inspiration can come in mysterious ways. For Barbara Kingsolver’s novel “Flight Behavior,” her seventh, it came three years ago in the form of a vision. “I woke up one morning with a very strange visual imagining of something that I had never seen or thought about before,” she told an overflow crowd on March 21 at Sweet Briar College’s Waxter Lecture Series on Environment and Sustainability. It was a vision of millions of monarch butterflies descending from the air and landing on trees in the mountain hollow in southwest Virginia where she lives. “It sounds sort of religious but it really wasn’t,” she said. Kingsolver had majored in ecology and evolutionary biology in college and had been thinking for a while about writing a novel around the subject of climate change. The vision of butterflies landing for the winter in the forests of southern Appalachia rather than their normal habitat in Mexico is the linchpin for her story set in eastern Tennessee, not far from her home. Butterflies also led her to Dr. Lincoln Brower and Dr. Linda Fink, residents of Nelson County and faculty members at Sweet Briar. Brower is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the behavior of monarchs, and Fink has co-authored several of the scientific papers they have written on the monarch, including at least three on the subject of freeze resistance of monarchs overwintering in Mexico. This topic applies to the novel, though in a very different setting. “I needed to know about the science of monarchs. I knew they migrate and congregate in a small area of Mexico, go through several generations and then re-migrate north.” But she wanted to know if her vision of monarchs over-wintering in Appalachia could be a consequence of climate change. “I wanted readers to trust me. I wanted

to be accurate, even though I made the whole thing up. That’s how I got to Brower.” She emailed Brower and he and his wife invited her to visit. It turned out Kingsolver needn’t have worried. “They are literary people,” she said. “They read fiction and they understand fiction is about real things. I was so gratified by the generosity of their imagination.” As she wrote the sections of the novel that involve the science of monarchs she sent them to Brower and Fink, asking them to correct her mistakes. “And they did,” she said. Brower said he found the novel “Very insightful. I loved it.” The characters representing clashing points of view and experiences are drawn with the empathy of someone who grew up in a rural community. She puts that understanding into the character of Dellarobia Turnbow, whom we first see on her way up a mountain to begin an affair, but whose encounter with millions of monarchs adorning the trees changes her life and that of her family and the inhabitants of the farming community in which she lives. What she sees is something of a miracle: “Brightness of a new intensity moved up the valley in a rippling wave, like the disturbed surface of a lake. Every bough glowed with an orange blaze.” Dellarobia and her family and neighbors will seem very familiar to people from the Blue Ridge communities similar to those of the southern Appalachian region of the novel’s setting, people who put family and community ahead of self as their first values. Kingsolver’s imagination and her ability to capture the interest of readers using a nearperfect balance of plot, character and setting give “Flight Behavior” an unusual power. And it was done with the help of two of our neighbors. BRL

There may be a light at the end of the tunnel for home sellers in Nelson County; first quarter home sales have increased by 50% when compared to this same time period in 2012. However, with a high inventory of 315 residential properties currently for sale, there is still a need for buyers to carefully weed through choices, and sellers to position their property to stand out in the competition. Statistical findings from the 2012 National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers may help market participants better understand one another and develop more customer centric approaches to buying and selling. Here are the report highlights: Characteristics of Home Buyers; 78% of recent home buyers said their home is a good investment, and 46 percent believe it’s better than stocks; 39% of all home buyers were first-time buyers; the typical home buyer was 42 years old; 16% of recent home buyers

were single females; the median household income of buyers was $78,600; first-time buyers plan to stay in the home for 10 years and repeat buyers plan to hold their property for 15 years. Characteristics of Homes Purchased; the typical home purchased was 1,900 sq ft with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; 79% of buyers purchased a detached single-family home and 14% purchased a condo or townhouse; new homes accounted for 16% of sales; the main factors influencing location choice were quality of neighborhood, convenience to job, and overall affordability of homes. The Home Search Process; 90% of home buyers used the Internet with 96% of those under the age of 44 utilizing it; for 41% of buyers the first step in the home buying process was looking at properties online; buyers searched an average of 12 weeks and viewed 10 homes (they

viewed 12 homes the previous year). Home Buying and Real Estate Professionals; 89% of buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent or broker, this is a steady increase from 69% back in 2001; 40% of buyers found their agent through a referral from a friend or family member and 10% used an agent that they had previously used. Financing the Home Purchase; 87% of home buyers financed their recent home purchase; buyers typically financed 91% of the purchase price. The median down payment is 9% ranging from 4% for first time buyers and 13% for repeat buyers. Characteristics of Home Sellers; The typical seller lived in their home for 9 years (back in 2007 the typical tenure was only 6 years.) Sellers typically sold their home for 95% of list price and 60% reported

at least one price reduction; 40% of sellers offered buyers incentives such as home warranty policy or closing costs; About 46% of sellers traded up to a larger and more expensive home and 62% purchased a newer home. Home Selling and Real Estate Professionals; 91% of sellers were assisted by a real estate agent; 38% of sellers found their agent through a referral by friends or family; 23% used an agent that they previously worked with to buy or sell. Nearly two-thirds of home sellers only interviewed one agent prior to listing. Understanding the market participants can lead to a more successful buying and selling experience! Gordon Dalton, along with a loose network of paddling-pals, doesn’t get bummed out when the forecast calls for heavy rain. He gets pumped. Not an organized group by any means, Gordon refers to the crew as, “Just a bunch of friends who paddle together when there’s something to paddle.” “After there’s been a good rain [or melt], Nelson County has a half dozen or more of the best stuff in the state. Creeks mostly,” says Gordon, a paddler for Team Pyranha, who’s been kayaking since his teens and has conquered rapids in almost a dozen states. “The kayakers statewide and even in the larger region really know about Nelson County for its creeks and the low volume streams, such as the North and South fork of the Tye and the Piney,” he said. “And they’ll drive from all over the state to come paddle it.” Sid Crocker, West Virginia native and coast-to-coast kayaker, agrees. “Nelson County is definitely a favorite, the Tye River especially.” It was at the North fork of the Tye that Sid actually dislocated his shoulder in March with this informal group of go-getters. “It was one of the first rapids. I flipped over in some really shallow rocks, tried to roll and dislocated my shoulder,” he recounts. As a registered nurse in the orthopedic unit at Martha Jefferson, “I can usually get it to go back in myself, but this time it was pretty severely dislocated,” says Sid, casually admitting a history of shoulder problems. Resilient rapid-riders from all across Virginia including Nelson, Charlottesville, Staunton and Roanoke recently gathered for the 6th Annual Goshen Pass Race held on the Maury River in neighboring Rockbridge County. “It’s real laid back, kind of a grass roots gathering,” reflects Gordon, who helped organize the event. “We had fifty something racers this year. We had a women’s class, youth class, canoeing class. Different groups, so we can share the prizes and things like that. We just all start at the same time, so that’s kind of a spectacle. Folks line the road to watch.” But Gordon doesn’t like to restrict himself within the boundaries of the familiar. “Myself and a couple of my friends have been really involved in the past with finding new places to paddle. Exploring new creeks, scouting out new stuff that may or may not be fun to paddle,” explains Gordon. “It’s that whole exploring kind of fun. And we have found some really good stuff in the area that have now become classics.” continued on page 28

This nonprofit organization focuses on the restoration and conservation of rivers all across America, as well as keeping a national inventory of whitewater rivers. “If someone finds a good run that hasn’t been known before, they usually put it up there and they put in the GPS coordinates and it’s shared for other paddlers to go check out,” says Gordon, who has noticed a noticeable increase in the sport’s popularity, especially in Nelson County. “Kayaking got really popular in the mid to late ‘90s, then there was kind of a dry period, I guess pun intended, because it did stop,” laughed Gordon. “The design of the boat has changed, so I think that has brought folks back to the sport. Definitely more women and a few more younger people.” Renee Lavin, a manager for Back Country Ski and Sport, is a rarity in the kayak community. “I would love for there to be more women out there. I think it’s just a really emotional sport. It’s hard for women to commit to it. They may already have kids and families … My boyfriend and I kayak all the time and are known as the one couple who will come out kayaking together.” “It’s cool to see the next generation,” says Gordon, reflecting again on the increase in popularity. “It’s definitely growing pretty fast. It’s good to see. I’ve been at it for a long time. But things come and go with how wet it is. For Waltons International Fan Club President Carolyn Grinnell, seeing Earl Hamner standing in the well of the Virginia Senate to receive the plaudits of the nation’s oldest legislature “brought tears to my eyes.” Hamner, 89, was recognized for both his literary achievements - “Spencer’s Mountain,” “Fifty Roads to Town,” - and his television successes - “The Homecoming,” “The Waltons,” “Falcon Crest” - and having put the state of Virginia in a very favorable light before national audiences. The Senate proclamation was the latest in a long string of honors for the Nelson County native stretching back to the early 1970s when “The Homecoming” and then “The Waltons” drew millions of viewers entranced by the stories of a Virginia family struggling through the depths of The Great Depression and later World War II. Hamner based the characters on “The Waltons” on his own family. His sister Nancy and her husband Garnett Jamerson, and brother Paul beamed proudly from the Senate gallery as Senate President Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling praised Hamner, saying “The Waltons” became “a piece of Americana that captivated the audience,” and called Hamner’s achievements “truly remarkable.” Also on hand were Hamner’s wife Jane, his son Scott and his daughter Caroline as well as other relatives and friends. Hamner had been honored the night before by the Library of Virginia for having donated his writings - scripts, books, correspondence - to the library. He was interviewed before an audience of 150 well-wishers by former television anchor Lisa Powell. “Some people said The Waltons’ taught lessons,” Hamner said. “I wasn’t trying to do that but because I wrote about people of character and decency it was interpreted that way.” Hamner told Blue Ridge Life, “I’m trying to persuade myself that I’m worthy” of the honors he has received. He said he was very glad to see friends from Nelson County in the audience Tuesday night and in the Senate Gallery. BRL

How do you describe Phillip Kerl of Wheeler’s Cove? For those of us at Blue Ridge Life, two words come to mind: family man. For others, he was a soccer coach. An artisan. A musician. He was no doubt a character. And a kind soul. We did a story on him in the August 2008 of Nelson County Life. He was raising money to go to Kenya so that children at an orphanage could play sports. Maybe basketball. Or if there was enough money for goals, then soccer. He passed away in March after a long fight with cancer. In his honor, friends and family gathered at the Rockfish Valley Community Center for a celebration of Phillip Kerl’s life, which concluded with a pick-up game of soccer. Shortly before Kerl’s passing, Karen Ratzlaff, Director of Advancement at Hospice of the Piedmont, interviewed him. With his family’s blessing, we print her story below:

CHOOSE the LIGHT On a sunny day in 2010 shortly after his fifty-sixth birthday, Phillip Kerl scored two goals in a pick-up soccer game with his sons and their friends. One week later, he was diagnosed with inoperable, stage four, throat cancer and his life changed forever. Seven months later, following unimaginably difficult but successful treatments at the University of Virginia, Kerl was dubbed “the miracle man” after beating enormous odds. “Cancer is a coward,” Kerl reflects. “It’s a worthy nemesis that shows up when you aren’t watching. I’d never judge anyone else’s response or reaction to its unexpected arrival; this is just my story.” A lifelong artist and musician – and a much-beloved soccer coach in Nelson County for more than 25-years―Phillip Kerl found his voice after treatment by writing songs about his experience. Vikki Bravo, a social worker at the Cancer Center, wanted others traveling a similar road to hear his work. One of his physicians quietly financed the creation of a music CD. One week after the completion of the CD―a year after he completed treatment―the cancer returned with a vengeance. The first reaction by the medical community when the cancer returned was that nothing more could be done for Kerl who had “maxed out” the amount of chemo and radiation his body could handle in the first round of treatment. But familiar with Kerl’s strength and resilience, it wasn’t long before a radiation oncologist sug-

gested a new round of therapies followed by a different type of chemo. “Cancer literally had me by the throat but lying there in the dark during radiation therapy I would meditate and try to breathe out the cancer and breathe in love.” A deeply spiritual person who does not identify with any one religion, Kerl felt bolstered by the support he received from his family and community. In the darkness and quiet he would focus on sending his love and prayers to others on their own cancer journey who didn’t have the support he enjoyed. Through it all, Kerl did his best to reflect on the best in his life. “Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow,” he points out. “The projections we are given for our longevity mean nothing. All we can do is get up every morning and see what we can accomplish.” “Everyone has dreams―you just never know if you’ll get to see them realized.” Kerl had already been fortunate to live out one very special dream. In 2008 he organized the donation of sports equipment from friends and colleagues in Nelson County who also helped fund a trip to an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya. He lived with boys and girls in squalor for three weeks, but it’s clear when he relives those memories that the trip was like going home, and that those were three of the most miraculous weeks of his life. He helped build basketball goals for children who had never played the game, and coached all ages in soccer. Remembering the beauty of their souls and the respect afforded him as their coach and mentor, he smiles when he says, “That was the greatest game I ever coached.”

By the time he left Nairobi, the children called him Babu, Swahili for “grandfather.” Another dream came true three weeks into his second round of treatment. Staff from the Emily Couric Cancer Center found funding to make it possible for Phillip and his beloved wife, Peggy, to travel to New York City to perform at a convention of cancer survivors and physicians. “To be honest, I wasn’t sure my message was still valid. How could I still be called a ‘miracle man’?” Reassured that he still had plenty to say of value, Kerl combined his music with narrative and reflection and gratefully remembers the comments shared with him afterwards by members of the audience. Even now his music is reaching people living in uncertainty and providing them with reassurance and support. More than four years after receiving a critical diagnosis, Kerl is still grateful. Driven forward by the strength of his will, he is a man who has experienced numerous, emotional ups-and-downs over the past four years including significant hearing loss that left him feeling isolated until his hospice social worker helped arrange the donation of hearing aids. But he admits that the latest transition has been the most difficult. “I had an enormous mental adjustment to make when I was admitted to hospice.” This chapter has required a re-shaping of his hope and he readily admits he’s still learning that lesson. But some things are crystal clear. One is his gratitude for the love of his wife, their eight children, and the extended community that sustains him. Peggy is amazed by his selflessness. “Phillip has made all of this easier on us. It’s wonderful to watch him teach our children how to be graceful and strong in the most difficult times.” Their son Koda, a young musician living in Charlottesville, speaks for his siblings when he predicts, “I know I’ll be able to handle anything that happens in my life after seeing how my father has handled all this.” Today, Kerl’s hopes look a little different than they used to. Never anticipating the loss of his voice, he hopes for more time and the strength to keep working on a legacy project with Koda to record the hundreds of scraps of lyrics he’s written over the years. He hopes for warm sunshine and the strength to walk in his field on good days, deep in Nelson County. Acknowledging all that she has had to bear he hopes that Peggy is sustained and supported, and he compliments the Hospice of the Piedmont team members who are working to make her life easier and his life more comfortable. And he shares his story with others because of his hope to pass his message on to others. “Enjoy more of each moment,” he advises. “If you have a choice, choose the light.” “No one ever knows how much time they have. But this is your life; it’s your breath you are drawing in. Yes, it’s difficult. Certainly, it’s uncomfortable. I can understand how hopeless others feel.” “But life is beautiful and to be treasured, and that’s what I’m focused on each day.” BRL

Bold & Beautiful Exbury Azaleas Bold blasting colors are so unusual in large sized plants that those that possess such an attribute are noteworthy. This is not to say that I enjoy loads of vibrant bold orange, fuchsia or brilliantly hot pink in my landscape, but a handful of plants are a nice added interest. Such is the case with my deciduous or Exbury azaleas that take center stage around the middle of April each year in my landscape. No, they share just about nothing with your common, mundane, typical evergreen azalea; these guys are definitely not as finicky to grow as most evergreen azaleas, they get some nice size and they can accent a border with flower colors that are electrifying when in bloom Unlike your common azalea, deciduous azaleas, as the name implies, lose their leaves each year. These azaleas bloom in large clusters at the end of the stem when the plant is just sprouting new foliage in the spring. The foliage is also different – Exbury leaves are larger than your typical azalea, not as deep green and you can see hints of maroon and pink in them. Sometimes they even offer a decent fall color. Adding more interest to this group, some of these deciduous azaleas also have fragrant blooms which, again, continue to set them apart from their evergreen counterparts. I have had a lot of success with them in either in full sun or with at least a half a day of sun. It should be noted that the more shade they are in, the less blooms you can expect and the more open and airy the plant tends to be. Like their evergreen counterparts, Exbury azaleas still have a shallow, fibrous root system forcing you to dig deep, amend well and remember that irrigation hose in the heat of the summer. They also prefer (and do best) in slightly acid soils so fertilize accordingly (Hol-

lyTone is best). When you get into varieties, the list is long and you can not really go wrong. All of them are hardy to Zone 5 and 4 so planting here in central Virginia, even on her mountains, is easily achievable. Just be sure that you leave them with plenty space to grow as I do NOT like to do major pruning cuts on them – their best form is how they naturally want to grow. Gibralter is perhaps one of the more widely known ones that has been around for a long time. The bloom color is bright vibrant orange with a gold tinge on a plant that will easily make it to 4 feet tall and wide. Also a veteran variety, Klondyke is a noteworthy plant that has soft orange buds that opens to a golden yellow with a hint of orange. The plant gets to around 5-6 feet in height with about a 4 foot spread so plant it where it can grow to full size. Mandarin Lights is one that I have just recently been planting. It offers redorange buds that open to a light orange. This variety grows to 5 feet in height and with about a 4 foot spread. Those of you into double blooming flowers may find interest in Cannon’s Double. This variety starts almost salmon red in bud and opens to a nice cast of creamy white, gold and pink. Again, give this guy some space as it will mature around 5-6 feet high with an equal spread. Finally if you happen to be working with a white motif, Northern Hi-Lights is a nice selection. This particular variety starts soft yellow in bud and then opens to a mostly white bloom accented by a yellow blotch on one of the petals. Northern Hi-Lights grows to about 4 feet tall and wide. And unfortunately, yes, just like just about every other noteworthy plant deer do sometimes forage on them, but with a little Deer Off, you too can enjoy these selections for years to come.

Sunburns are very common and can cause pain and discomfort, but can also cause permanent skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancers. The obvious sign of a sunburn is reddened, painful skin. This can happen much more quickly then you expect, even on days that do not appear very sunny. Some skin types burn much more easily than others – redheads beware! Underneath the skin the ultraviolet rays can cause damage to the DNA of cells. This can cause premature aging of skin and can increase the risk of skin cancers. A mild sunburn may just cause some redness of the skin. A more severe burn may cause pain and blistering, with fever, chills, nausea and vomiting. Several days later the skin will peel. Once a sunburn has occurred the treatment is aimed at controlling the symptoms. Cold compresses or cold baths can ease the inflammation in the skin. Lo-

tions or creams containing aloe, menthol or camphor can soothe the skin. Over the counter pain medications can help ease the pain. It is important to stay well hydrated after a sunburn and to stay out of the sun. Prevention of sunburns is important. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10AM and 4PM. If possible stay out of the sun during these hours. Wear protective clothing – long sleeves and pants, a wide brimmed hat and UV blocking sun glasses. Use UVA and UVB blocking sun screens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. This needs to be applied before you go outside and reapplied at least every 2 hours – more if you are swimming or sweating a lot. And don’t forget the top of your feet – I remember many beach vacations with my father not able to wear his shoes due to sunburns!

Measuring Progress There are several fun gadgets on the market to measure fitness performance and progress. There is the regular heart rate monitor to keep you exercising in the appropriate zone to the watch with GPS that measures the distance you have run/ walked, average pace, distance per week, heart rate and other features which you can download to your computer to have a record of your workouts. There are food journal tools online to record your calories. You could spend a lot more time on the computer than you already do recording everything you eat and do. Prices vary from affordable to unbelievable. The question is do these tools benefit us. Recording your workouts is a helpful measure to show progress. It also helps you to make adjustments in your workout routine if you are not making progress. It is helpful to record resting heart rate, exercise

heart rate, endurance time, repetitions and sets during weight training and days per week that you exercise. Recording how you felt during and after each exercise session is beneficial.
