For the last three years, our Blue Ridge Life Magazine ads have consistently paid for themselves, month after month, by bringing in new customers! It’s been the best use of our ad dollars that we’ve found. BRL brings in tourists and locals alike, and helps us get the word out on new products and store news. When we recently added the Big Green Egg ultimate cooker line, we were amazed at the number of units and accessories that we sold in the first month to customers who said that they came in because they saw it in BRL! We have advertised in a half dozen other local print and online publications, and BRL has brought us more new customers than all of the others combined!

thepublishers The animal kingdom is making its presence known this summer. We almost took the “fun Jeep” to the bay but decided against it when we saw a bird’s nest with eggs in the spare tire. More on that later. You won’t appreciate being alive and human until you breathe in the pungent aroma of a dead dolphin baking under the sun. We’re not sure why it washed up but a team of biologists affiliated with the Virginia Beach Aquarium hauled it away to perform an autopsy (the recovery mission was quite dramatic). CSI Chesapeake Bay. “No. Yucky!” Peyton said. One afternoon while playing in the surf with Adam, I shot out of the water like a rocket holding my left toe and shouted, “Ouch! A crab!” I must have made an impression on my young boy. We were in the grocery store aisle getting butter for the evening’s steamed crabs (karma) and he’d all of a sudden grab his foot. “Ouch! A crab!” Cue stares from the locals. Back home from vacation, Tommy was cleaning out some junk from his car when he noticed a foot long piece of snake skin near the back seats, where the kids ride. Then he saw another one, twice its length. 2 feet + 1 feet = a 3 foot long snake. Sure
enough, there it was curled up under the driver’s seat. Bye bye, Mr. Snake. On a date night (you need one after being on holiday with two kids under the age of 5), we took the fun Jeep and forgot about the nest in the spare tire until we got home and heard the birds chirping. There they were, bulging eyes shut, with their beaks wide open for a worm. Crossing our fingers that their mother wouldn’t shoot us evil eye darts for taking her children away from her, we were relieved to see her fly in with the goods. Soak it in, mom because one day those birds will leave the nest. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford AUGUST 2013 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

The art of the unusual I’ve always had a soft spot for underdogs and oddballs. Maybe you do too. The one-eyed dog, hopping along on three legs, hops right into your heart. Odd animals, odd people, odd wines, so why not odd grape varietals? Domaine des Huards, CourCheverny, Romorantin, 2010 – Michel Gendrier is on a mission to make sure the world learns about Romorantin, the grape his grandfather planted in 1922. If you’ve traveled through the gently rolling hills of the Loire Valley, dotted with castles and vines, you may have stumbled upon the Château de Cheverny. Built by Jacques Bougier, it recalls the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, (and no surprise since Bougier studied under Salomon de Brosse who built the Luxembourg) and has been more or less with the same family for six centuries. For a brief stint the château was in the hands of Henri II, who gave it to his mistress, the beautiful Diane de Poitiers. But she preferred Chenonceau. Alas. While the family still lives on the third floor, Cheverny is open to the public and there is a
majestic pack of hounds in the kennel outside. This is the landscape of the Romorantin grape. Well not within the château’s hallowed walls, but on the limestone soil around both château and town. Look for a honey and mineral nose on this bottle of 100 % Romorantin which is also organic. A wine sure to refresh in the dog (hound?) days of summer. $18 Paitin, Elisa, Roero Arneis, 2011 – Indigenous to the Italy’s Piedmont, Arneis once was used to soften tannins in Barolo and Barbaresco. But the grape fell from flavor and became no more than the domain of decoys, as Piemontese growers planted rows of Arneis between their prized Nebbiolo grapes, hoping the birds would eat the Arneis and spare the Nebbiolo. Arneis is a wine-lover’s grape and it’s weighty enough to stand up to a wide variety of foods from salty appetizers and seafood to game. Look for notes of melon and apricot layered with almond extract. Revitalizing in summer, full-bodied enough for winter. $18 Loire Valley, vineyards and châteaux. May 2014. Reserve your spot: Kpfaltz@cstone.net.

Filled with hops, a muslin brewer’s sock is dipped into the wort. From here, the wort is transferred to a bucket and left to ferment. Bourbon soaked oak barrel chips were also added for flavor after transferring the liquid to a glass carboy. A simple syrup will then be added after fermentation is complete and the beer will be bottled.

By day J. Beckham is a Professor of Communication Studies at PVCC in Charlottesville, but by night she’s Proprietor and Chief Zymurgist (someone who focuses on the chemical processes of fermentation) for her own company, The Batchery, which specializes in creating custom craft beer. She’s also reaching the brim of completing her doctorate in cultural and communication studies. Her dissertation: “The Value of a Pint: A Cultural Economy of American Beer.” “Usually I hop up on a fairly high soap box about knowing what’s in your beer,” says Beckham, who has also been teaching home-brew classes for the past four years and even sessions at events like the Top of the Hops Festival in Charlottesville. “I posted a link [on Facebook] to an article from the Wall Street Journal that was about a church that had a homebrew club. Marion saw the link and said, ‘Yes! We should do this!’” Marion Kanour, the Priest in charge at Grace Episcopal is nothing like the soft-spoken, mild-mannered gentleman I remember leading mass at my church a decade ago. Must be something in her holy water. “I’ve been the Priest at Grace, Massies Mill since April 2013. Folks have been very receptive to the new ideas I’ve been introducing. They’re a gracious group and very progressive theologically,” says Kanour. “The Graceful Brewers Guild has nine members now and the idea is being well-received by parishioners as well as community members.”
“Beer making and the church were not far off,” says Beckham. “The way that we experience beer on a large commercial level is very new, historically speaking. So what we’re doing today is more representative of this long history of beer making.” Although brilliant, this idea is actually not as revolutionary as you might think. Unfortunately the common association between alcohol and overindulgence has been a bit of a buzz-kill as far as the church is concerned. “That’s the opposite of our hope at Grace, Episcopal,” Kanour explains. “We’re enjoying the fellowship involved with creating an ale that can be enjoyed at special occasions at our parish.” “There’s lots of history of people doing co-ops, so you’d come and help brew and take home. The pub, or the public house, used to be almost always attached to the church, and that was where you met to do business,” says Beckham. When it becomes common practice again for members of a congregation to gather together and create something sacred that can be shared and enjoyed in a social setting over some good stories and a few laughs… that’ll be a religion I can really commit to. Because, let’s be honest; beer, wine and ‘shine are just about the closest thing Nelson County has to a holy trinity. BRL

“It all come about because Taylor Smack who also owns the Barrel House in Colleen had a problem with barrels,” says Chris, who’s been working the business since he was old enough to lift a hammer. “He gets the barrels from the whiskey distillers in Kentucky ‘cause they can use the barrel one time to age whisky and then they have to discard it. He gets the barrel and he can use it twice with his beer and then he has to get rid of ‘em some kind of way. So he approached me about building some stuff out of it and basically said let your imagination go wild.” When you’re skilled in chinking, blacksmithing, general restoration and you have a knack for picking up new trades… Well, there’s not much you can’t do once you get in the groove. “Basically when he approached us with this, it’s a brand new idea, something we’ve never dealt with before, so we just went online and there’s anything you can imagine out there. We just found pictures and then you basically stare at the picture and figure out how someone else made this piece of furniture,” Chris explains. And with an endless pool of possibilities, they haven’t even come close to scraping the bottom of the barrel. “With full barrels we’ve built tables, wine or liquor cabinets, and coolers. Now we’ve also got half barrel coffee tables, planters, things like that. And as far as stuff that when we take the barrels apart, Oh goodness there’s all kinds of stuff, we built bistro tables and stools, stemware racks that’ll hold 50 or 60 glasses,” says Chris. “It’s all kinds of stuff, ya know from baskets, to chairs, to coat hangers, to Lazy Susans. We’re just seeing where it goes and what happens with it. It’s been a really cool learning experience.” And let’s be honest, when you’ve got the best family name for the business you can get, you gotta have a little fun with it. “It all started through my dad,” laughs Chris. “When he was a younger man he had big ol’ red bushy hair, so everybody called him Woody Woodpecker. And when he started the business with the log cabins thirty years or so ago, he went with Woody Wood Chinking.” Some things are just ingrained at an early age. BRL

A 2013 midyear real estate summary
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
In the 2012 yearend report I mentioned that things were beginning to look more promising. As projected, the market continues to stabilize and improve as we close out midyear sales in 2013. Here is a quick market summary for Nelson County. Figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS) from January 1, 2013 to June 30, 2013. Midyear Countywide Overview; 99 residential properties sold midyear 2013 which represents a 39.4% increase from the same time period in 2012 when 71 properties sold. As you may recall in 2012 we had a slow start to the year, but ended with a bang. (Recap of 2012 quarterly sales: Q1-36, Q2-35, Q3-46, Q4-64 for a total sales volume in 2012 of 181.) While we are significantly ahead of Q1 and Q2 sales, we are below the burst of activity that we had in the second half of 2012.
Midyear Statistical Comparisons; Q1/Q2 2012: median $220,000, average price $241,673, Average price per sq ft 132.92, Days on Market (DOM) 212. Q1/Q2 2013: median $222,500, average price $246,495, Average price per sq ft 140.06, Days on Market (DOM) 214. When comparing midyear figures, the 2013 market has shown marginal increases in terms of average and median prices. DOM is relatively unchanged. However, it is important for sellers to not get too enthusiastic about expecting higher sales prices because the 2013 midyear price figures are slightly below the 2012 yearend figures. (2012 yearend: median $227,900, average price $258,651, Average price per sq ft 139.25, Days on Market (DOM) 217) Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; Q1 with 54 sales was a stronger quarter than Q2 with 45 sales. The strongest month for the first half
Marlo Allen
of the year was February with 24 sales followed by April with 21 sales. The slowest month was June with only 8 sales. Midyear Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 50 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 11 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 38 sales. When comparing Q1/Q2 2013 sales with Q1/Q2 2012 sales, all 3 markets saw an improvement with Stoney Creek realizing the most significant increase in sales volume at 83.3% followed by Wintergreen at 38.9%, and county/ non-resort at 31.0%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 50 properties sold and 36 of those were condos or attached properties representing 72% of all mountain sales. The other 14 Wintergreen properties were detached homes. Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the

county locality with the most sales was Afton with 9 sales representing 23.7% of the county/non-resort sales followed by Lovingston with 6 sales. Midyear Land Sales; 30 parcels of land sold throughout Wintergreen and Nelson County with a price per acre of $28,680. Of the 30 parcels sold, 4 of them were in Stoney Creek with a median of $45,500 and DOM of 335; 6 were in Wintergreen with a median of 41,500 and DOM of 309; 20 non resort parcels sold with a median of $69,950 and DOM of 282. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. APPALACHIAN HEART by LYNN COFFEY
This month I am writing to let readers of BRL know my newest book about the Appalachian culture will be available in August. Appalachian Heart is the fourth volume in the Backroads series written for and about the mountain people of our area. In the first three Backroads books most of the content was taken from the old newspaper articles that ran from 1981 until 2006. Many

FOOD TRUCK & LIVE MUSIC! of the people I interviewed in the 1980s and 1990s are now deceased and I am thankful they trusted me over a 25 year period to write their life histories and let me photograph them so both could be preserved. It was an honor I am still in awe of and humbled by. In comparison, Appalachian Heart contains the oral histories of 16 living Virginia highland natives and their memories of an earlier time in history are an invaluable gift to humanity. As I’ve said many times before, when the last generation of mountain people is gone, so is the culture that raised and sustained them. It marks the end of an unhurried era that young people need to know existed before computers, smart phones and tablets; even before electricity, indoor plumbing and telephones. It was a time when hard physical labor was a reward unto itself and many times the difference between surviving or not. In our world of plenty it’s hard to fathom such a time of hardship and yet, many people I interviewed said they wouldn’t trade the way they were raised for a million dollars and wished they could go back and live it again in the same way. One has to wonder, with all our modern technology, if society has really progressed or actually regressed by all the changes that have happened in the last 50 years. Appalachian Heart overflows with stories from the mountains. Like the two unmarried sisters whose homeplace was so isolated it took them several days to shovel snow eight miles out to the main road so they could walk to the country store for supplies and then walk the eight miles back home again. Read about a tough 91-year-old man who continues to bear hunt the old-time way; by turning the dogs loose and following them through the dense laurel thickets without the aid of tracking collars and GPS devices. How he fought a wounded bear, won, and still has the scars to prove it. Marvel at one family’s creative way of sending messages up their holler long before they had telephones and how a little orphan girl in Virginia’s early foster care system found her forever495home and future Cooperative Way, Arrington, VA 22922 husband in a place called Montebello. 434-263-4002 • bluemountainbarrel.com These stories and the multitude of photographs that accompany each chapter make up the pages of Appalachian Heart and I am proud to represent the hearty people of Virginia’s Blue Ridge. The mountain people have given me everything I’ve ever dreamed of and I hope this book in some small way can repay them by preserving their incredible histories. BRL

To these men and women, good livin’ means filling up a ruck with bricks (and/or beer) while a cadre leads you through the unknown, special forces style. The brainchild behind this insanity is a man named Jason McCarthy, a Green Beret-turned entrepreneur who founded GORUCK, a Montana-based maker of heavy duty ruck sacks. The Challenge evolved as an event to introduce people to the product by putting it and its wearers through a series of military-inspired missions that leave participants wet, muddy, and bruised. Sounds like fun? It gets better. These guys are bringing their brand of good livin’ to Massanutten Resort on September 21. Only this time, it’s not a Challenge. It is a 6+ mile course with 20+ obstacles called the Nasty. Jean Norum, a 57-year-old mother of two from Albemarle County, lives for these things. “It is hard to explain to somebody who hasn’t done something similar. The teamwork aspect is so cool and you recognize everybody’s contribution.”

Participants in a recent GORUCK Challenge in Charlottesville experience some good livin’, special forces style. A new obstacle course-based event called the Nasty will debut at Massanutten Resort September 21.
Jean began doing various GORUCK events after her sons urged her to do them. She says her experience in martial arts, as well as her training with SEAL TEAM PT, prepared her for the mentally and physically grueling experience. Jean recently tested her skills on a Nasty obstacle, a series of two walls she had to scale. One of them was straight and the other was bent at an angle. “When I came down the other side there was this great feeling of accomplishment,” Jean said. “I didn’t have time to think ‘I’m not going to be able to do this.’” continued on page 28

“It’s an introduction to what we go through for months in just a short period of time,” explains Matt Stoltz, who was the cadre for the GORUCK Challenge Jean did in Charlottesville. “We get people out of their comfort zone and find ways to strengthen their ability to work on teamwork as well as work on limitations they may think they have.” “Physically, it’s the hardest I’ve had to work in that short period of time. ... Today, I have bruises over my entire body,” Jean said giggling, the day after a GORUCK Light, a shorter version of the Challenge. For the Nasty, the cadre have been hard at work designing the course which includes obstacles with names such as The Belly Wall, Gorilla Swing and Confidence Climb. In other words, this is something the bored athlete can get excited about, Matt said. “Wake up, go to work, come home. And they don’t find that push. I feel like this is an opportunity where we can offer that extra push and get them out of that comfortable zone and relying on other people instead of just themselves. Jean agrees. With help from team mates, the impossible isn’t so impossible. If anything, preparing your mind to not over think situations is the real mind-bender. “What makes it hard is it’s so quick and you almost don’t have time to think about what you’re going to do next,” she said. “It’s a relationship that you build with the person to the left and right of you,” Matt explained. “When you’re going out on an operation, that’s what we focus on. We focus on teamwork, we build leadership, and we build communication. And the result, Matt said, can be transformative. “You can see the change in their faces: ‘Holy crap. I just went through this!’” BRL Join Blue Ridge Life Magazine for some good livin’ at the GORUCK Nasty at Massanutten Resort on September 21. For details, visit goruck.com/nasty

It’s not really a summer job when you own it. Caroline Tillman of Arrington is busy running business number 2: Poppy and Elle. “I already had a business before selling feather hair extensions and I wanted to have another business after that,” says Tillman as she measures and cuts elastic strips. “These hair ties don’t leave pony tail dents, they’re gentle, they don’t tangle as easily, and they look pretty on your wrist.” Tillman admits choosing the direction for her second business venture wasn’t exactly a divine inspiration. “I looked on Etsy, which is the platform I used for my other business and tried to find something that was easy to make, but also sold really well, and I replicated the idea,” explains Tillman. In just a few short months online, Tillman’s ties are already being worn worldwide. “I’ve shipped to Ireland, England, and Australia,” lists Tillman. “Eight hundred and fifty is my biggest order so far. It’s more of an assembly line kind of thing, but I can probably make two or three hundred in a few hours.” Caroline is no stranger to delaying gratification. She put in long hours on the tennis court before becoming nationally ranked. The time

Time is money. We’ll help you save both.
Just because it’s summer vacation doesn’t mean everyone’s stopped thinking about school. A group of good-hearted individuals is using this time to prep for the upcoming semester, and they have a lot of kids on their mind. The Tye River Cub Cares program is a partnership of churches, non-profit programs and local individuals and businesses that have formed a united front to supply provisions for Nelson County kids. “This program provides supplemental food on weekends for kids at two schools in Nelson – Tye River Elementary and Rockfish River Elementary,” says Mike Tapager who supervises both sections of the program. “What that means is that each Friday during the school year, the students whose parents have signed up for the program receive a package of food to take home. We provide this for about one-hundred and thirty students at Tye River and twenty-five at Rockfish.”

The Rockfish district is fairly new compared to Tye River, who has been distributing since fall of 2011. Dana Bond, woman in charge of distribution at Rockfish, was excited to become a part of the existing team. “We decided to do something for the kids here. And when we found out a year and a half ago that Tye River had started a program we went over and visited and decided that we didn’t need to reinvent the wheel that we would just join with them.” It only takes two hundred dollars to support a child for the entire school year, but more often than not, the individuals involved with this program will donate more funds to the cause. The money and man-hours offered by each volunteer far exceed the amount of recognition they deserve. “We don’t know who the kids are, but I do know that the kids are really excited to get their sacks every week. Adults have the food bank, they have the voice to speak for themselves and kids don’t. You know, kids can’t always feel free to tell you they’re hungry.” BRL For donation info, contact Mike Tapager: tapager@aol.com

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT...
By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC
One for the Show - Annual Vines Recently I was at a client’s home working on a small retaining wall. This small dry-stack wall was built mainly to encompass and distract your eyes away from their phone and cable pedestals in that immediate area. After the wall was done, we added in a post and birdhouse to move the eye up instead of focusing downward on the wall and the pedestals. Attached to the post, we chose an annual vine instead of a perennial vine for one main reason: like annuals, some annual vines literally bloom themselves to death - and this area required a workhorse. Don’t get me wrong, Clematis is an excellent vine, but when compared with a Mandevilla, the Clematis cowers back to the propagation mat. Top of the list is Mandevilla ‘Alice Du Pont’. Growing to around 10 feet or so, Mandevilla showcase large, trumpet shaped, three inch, cotton candy pink blooms from early summer to frost. Don’t be fooled by any of the newer varieties – if you want the tried and true, go with Alice Du Pont. Mandevilla require full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, and well amended soil to grow. They are medium feeders but do require consistent moisture and food to keep the show going until late October. Although they are relatively disease and insect free, I do recommend that you treat them with a systemic insecticide to prevent spider mites and aphids during the season. Considered to be the most romantic vine available, the Moonflower gains this reputation for its somewhat odd bloom cycle that opens at dusk (literally while you watch in very short time) and closes at dawn, hence the name ‘moon’ flower. Growing to around 10 feet, the Moonflower brightens up trellises with its 4-5 inch, somewhat flattened, white blooms that emit a beautiful fra-
grance. This plant does best in full sun and expect around 8-10+ weeks of blooms. Use this guy in your moon garden where its white colored blooms will light up a trellis or bench. Keep in mind that this plant is poisonous – how romantic is that?! Getting away from the normal ‘run of the mill’ varieties, the Cup and Saucer Vine is a beautiful option. Opening pale green, the two inch, large lavender purple/blue, bell shaped flowers with white calyx adorn this vine from early summer till fall. Its sweetly scented fragrance is also a bonus, allowing you the opportunity to dress up the air while dressing up a trellis, arbor or gate. With the vine itself growing upwards of 15-20 feet, allow this guy plenty of vertical space to grow. Best in full sun to part shade. Known for not only its flowers but also its fruit, the Hyacinth Bean is a unique vine with multiple seasons of interest. Growing to 10 feet in height, the Hyacinth Bean is adorned in the summer and early fall with whitish blooms that are kissed with streaks of lavender and are held in clusters that eventually set fruit and turn to a ruby-purple color bean, around 3 inches in length. For those that wish to make more for the following season, these guys are easy to harvest – just allow them plenty of time to mature and then pick them while dry and store in a zip lock bag with a tissue in it (for wicking moisture). Best grown in full sun. Equally known for its interesting, palmate foliage as its blooms, the Cardinal Climber is another unique vine that adds interest for the home garden. Growing to 15-20 feet or so, the Cardinal Climber has plenty of height to show off its bright, 1 inch crimson red tubular flowers. The huge foliage is elegantly divided and provides a picturesque backdrop for the flowers.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine
A member of Sentara Healthcare.
Discover why people trust Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, What can you tell me about heat illness? The temperatures have been high. How many of you do construction, farm, or other outside work? How about fish, hike, bike, or just find yourself outdoors in the summer? If you do any of these things, or, frankly if you just live in Virginia in the summer, you are at risk for heat sickness. Usually heat injury comes from high outside temperature mixed with physical activity and not drinking enough fluids. Heat illness comes in stages, with cramps first, exhaustion second, and finally heatstroke. Heat cramps usually start in the leg and abdominal muscles. If you are working outside in the heat, and start to get unusual cramps, beware. The key here is to slow down, take a break in the shade or air conditioning, and drink. Water is good, a sports drink like Gatorade is probably even better, because it has salt and other important stuff in it that you lose when you sweat. A
worse problem is heat exhaustion, which includes heat cramps but adds nausea, confusion, and headache. Now we are talking serious business. If you are feeling this, you had better be getting to a cool place to rest and hydrate. If you aren’t feeling better quickly, it is time to see the doctor. Heatstroke is even more extreme. This happens after a person has been through the cramps and exhaustion, and then passes out. Of course, most people never have these illnesses, probably because we all know we should slow down and drink more when it is hot. But, it is worth reviewing the signs of heat injury so you can recognize and treat it early. Remember that kids and the elderly get heat illness much easier than other folks. Watch them closely when the mercury rises. So, when it is hot, slow down, take breaks, and drink!

theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Cycling Training Tips One of the things I love about cycling is that there is always more to learn about technique. Several years ago, I cycled a moderate 30 miles and noticed the next day that I was physically exhausted. I thought that I had over trained but wanted to know more. So, I wore a heart rate monitor and repeated the ride. Well, I was riding at my maximum heart rate for the entire ride! No wonder my body was exhausted. There is value in starting slowly and riding smart. Warming up: Take the first 30 minutes of the ride to cycle at a slower pace and effort. It is a pace where you can carry on a conversation. If your heart rate is too high in the beginning, it will increase your metabolic rate and you will go into sugar burning mode instead of long lasting fat reserves. Starting slowly sets a precedent for longer rides so you can train your body to have the proper reserves in store. Revolutions per minute (rpm): this is the number of times your foot completes a full circle each minute.
Office Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30-5pm. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (540)-456-6710
Ideally, a cadence of 90-100rpm is the most efficient ratio for cycling. However, if you are a beginner this can take time to learn. Practice and count on your rpms on short rides. Count your rpm for 30 seconds and multiple by two and try to remember what that feels like on your legs. Maintain that cadence whether you are riding on levels or hills. Gearing: This takes practice and knowing your bike. It is important to learn when to adjust your gears especially on hills so you can maintain the 90-100 rpm. The wrong technique is to “muscle” your way up a hill; this places a strain on joints and muscles and can set you up for injury. Ride Consistently: Practice riding on a straight line and avoid weaving. This is important for safety on the road and also when riding in groups. Practice riding close to the rider in front of you. Practice being the leader in the line of cyclists and drafting behind the rider in front of you. It takes practice to ride comfortably close to other riders and not crash but learning this is important because
