thepublishers As of this morning, we have had more than 67 inches of rain on the farm. To put it in perspective, filling up a pool with that amount of rain would put me under water. Tommy would be bobbing around on his tippy toes. “How many more weeks until Christmas?” the kids are beginning to ask. Dearest children, can we please get through Halloween first? As I write, a big brown truck is on its way to deliver this year’s costumes: Adam is being Steve from Minecraft again but we had to re-order the head. In contrast, it was obvious Peyton had been planning her costume for a long time. “I want to be a Vampicorn!” For those of you who don’t know what that is – I had to take a wild guess when she told me about it – it is a blood-sucking unicorn. “I can wear a lady vampire costume and I’ve got a horn and rainbow tail from my birthday,” she explained. “Gothic Vampiress Costume, Size large.” Add to cart. The poor kids always want us to dress up but we both cannot stand putting on costumes. Though I do have an idea this year that may work:
Yanny and Laurel. You will swear we are different people until we swap bodies. It will be amazing. The truth is, if it weren’t for our height, our clothes would be darn near interchangeable. Down to the spandex. It’s my fault for introducing Tommy to that material but he needed something on his cold weather runs. Actually, up until the cold snap signaling fall, he had outgrown the stretchy stuff (it does get hot in the summer) and traded in his bottoms for ranger panties. Don’t know what they are? Look it up (Hint: They come in handy when you’re swimming in more than 67 inches of rain). Plus, it can’t be any scarier than a headless Minecraft Steve or a Vampicorn. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine Tasting Terms, Tannin Take a sip of wine with heavy tannins, and you’ll likely pucker up and feel like you just licked chalk. But that very same bottle may evolve into wonder with time in your cellar, like the gangly, surly teenager who morphed before your very eyes into a poised and gracious adult. This month it’s all about the tannin. Tannin is a naturally occurring polyphenol found in plants, and polyphenols (flavonoids, lignans and such) are the highly antimicrobial and antiviral antioxidants beneficial to health. Tannin is found in tea, grapes, pomegranates, barley, nuts, chocolate, rhubarb, quince, cinnamon, clove, legumes and in many berries. And while the terms tannin and tannic acid are often used interchangeably, they differ slightly, so we’ll stick simply with “tannin.” In wine there are two kinds of tannin. The first, which you perceive on the front of the tongue or roof of the mouth, comes from the grapes: skins, stems, pips (seeds.) The second comes from the oak, or the barrel. The more contact these elements
have with the wine, the more tannic it will be. Tannin relates more to texture than to flavor; it’s what makes a wine seem dry—the chalky sensation in your mouth. But if you want to be correct, don’t say “dry” since that relates to degrees of sweetness. Say “tannic” instead. Or you can speak in terms of smooth tannins versus harsh tannins, firm or grippy tannins. A common myth is that tannin is found only in red wines. True, reds have much higher tannin levels, but all wines have tannins. Grapes high in tannin include: Tannat (whose very name means tannin), Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Petit Verdot and Mourvèdre. Those lower in tannins include: Pinot Noir, Gamay, Barbera and Dolcetto. A young, tannic wine will taste harsh, astringent, or tight, but a wine high in tannins will be a wine that has the better aging potential. When you age a left bank Bordeaux or a Barolo, the tannins mellow over time, and the wine gains a beautiful complexity and sublimity it wouldn’t, or couldn’t, obtain without the tannins and aging process. No time for cellaring? There are
always tricks of the trade. Just think of black tea, known for its tannins. What do you do to soften it? Add a touch of milk. Same thing with a tannic red; take a bite of triple-crème cheese. The fat of the cheese binds with the tannins so your mouth doesn’t absorb all the shock. Or sip your Cabernet with a rare steak, which will also have the impression of softening tannins, when all the tannins are really doing is binding to the proteins in the steak rather than your mouth. Tannin taste test: Compare a low-tannin Beaujolais with the more tannic Cahors. If the tannic bite of the Cahors gets you, break out the creamy cheese. La Tour Chambert, Cahors, 2014 – Chewy tannins and earth. $16.99 Aging potential: Barbaresco 2003 – with already close to twenty years of age, this Barberesco can still go longer, softening the Nebbiolo until it drinks like liquid rose petals. A Life in Design An alarm beeps. A baby mews. Rose Valentino takes a bag of fortified breast milk and with nurse-like precision attaches it to a nasal gastric feeding tube that runs through the medical pump to her infant’s stomach. Her premature son, Koa James, came home this week and this routine happens- in addition to regular feedings- every three hours, around the clock. Born seven weeks early, he’ll need these extra feedings until he’s strong enough to consistently feed on his own. Once full, the tiny warm bundle snuggles into the crook of his mother’s elbow and sleeps. His little leg with its two-inch long foot and baby peas for toes dangles over her forearm. Izzy the dog takes a couple of sniffs, determines that all is well, then nestles into her cushion on the floor. “I think about how much time I used to spend time in the studio, just creating,” she laughs softly, stroking Koa’s head. “I know that time will come again.” For Rose, designing and sewing clothing is an art and a livelihood. Also the mother of a meandering four-year old, her days are long. And busy. She rises at six, fixes breakfast, sees Tye on the bus to pre- kindergarten, works through the day, and hopes to fall into bed by 11:00. Not to mention the round-the-clock feedings. She loves the boys and their energy. But like a true artist, her work is a meditation for her. “When I don’t get to do it, I kind of suffer.” continued on page 12

Her interest in design began as a child when she compiled pages of her drawings into entire albums. Ice skating costumes in particular appealed to her she says, “because as a family we watched the winter Olympics and they were just so sparkly and fabulous.” Later she began taking apart articles of clothing to see how they were made. “I messed around enough to get the idea that you have to create space for a body.” But it wasn’t until she attended Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Craft and Material Studies that she took on the challenge of transforming her two-dimensional sketches to threedimensional creations that were actually wearable. College was experiment time for Rose. She studied ceramics, tried her hand at metal-smithing, glass-blowing print-making and painting. On the side, she began to upcycle thrift shop items with artful additions. She found a pair of platform shoes and carved designs into the wood heels with a wood-burning tool. “I re-covered the tops with an awesome piece of faux-skin fabric,” she says, “and sold them at a Richmond shop called Urban Artifacts.” While in Richmond, she worked at the fabric shop, Les Fabriques, where, ever confident, she took on clients, learning the skills to take her designs from the sketch pad to the customer. “It was tough,” she remembers. “It was back to the drawing board every time because you’re working with a different body, a unique design and a new fabric. It took a number of years to get that body of knowledge both in the craft and customer service to be able to say to someone ‘this may not be the best choice for you.’

“Any job is like that – there’s a learning curve,” she says. “I had to figure out what was really important and I had to convince people that I’d done the work to get to this point and I really do know what I’m talking about.”

[For Holly, we] chose a sumptuous doublefaced silk satin for the body with an overlay on the bodice of silk organza which I would hand pleat, horizontally. Subtle but important details emerged as we built and fit: the slight sweetheart line of the bodice top, the band of satin that became the frame along the top. The red beads that became faux ‘buttons’ on the back and the red silk band peeking out from the hem were the final touch–unplanned but just what the gown needed.

Rose indulges her fascination with re-styling. “There’s something about gathering things, finding interesting pieces and collaging them together. Maybe something damaged that still has beauty, ” she says. “If these fabrics could talk!” She enjoys the challenge of making old things useful again, elevating them, creating new stories for them. Like the nightgowns for sale in Home Remedies and Mercantile in the town of Lovingston. She salvages a hand-crocheted antique medallion, adds couple of rows of rescued lace to the bottom of yards of organic handkerchief-weight linen, then gathers the top with a long ribbon that streams down the front. Much of her collection of fabrics and notions comes from clients, and this gets to the heart of why she works so well as a collaborator. They bring her a bit of lace that belonged to their grandmother, a family christening gown or perhaps their mother’s wedding dress that would never fit or is in desperate need of updating, and they get down to work. When Cathy Coyle (who knows a thing or two about weddings through her Nelson County business Willow Branch Flowers) approached Rose about her own wedding dress, she provided an idea about the basic shape and style she had dreamed about, as well as the fabric for the body of the dress. “I also mentioned to her that I have a collection of small pieces of vintage fabric,” Cathy said, “ many of them with floral designs.” To her delight, Rose cut flowers and leaves from the fabric and appliquéd them to the front of the dress, cascading down like a garden bower. “The dress fit perfectly,” she said, “and is a wearable work of art.” With Baby Koa home now, Rose finds her creative time in the 2-hour segments that fall between feedings. Unfazed, she accommodates to this new schedule by styling accessories. She displays a belt she just completed, an elegant sash of burgundy suede overlain with vintage lace, studded with white and gun-metal gray pearls, rhinestones and embroidered flowers- -a creation befitting a Russian princess. The rumble of tires on the gravel road outside her home signals the approaching school bus. She puts down the sash, picks up the baby and she’s up and off to welcome her four-year old back home, Izzy trotting alongside. Later – much later – after the boys are in bed, she’ll sort through her collection, pick up her needle and let inspiration take her. BRL

We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of perhaps the most recognizable car on Nelson’s 151, Lisa Davis’ “Echo mobile,” which has just rolled up to the parking lot of one of its happy places, Blue Mountain Brewery. And judging by the sticker job on Lisa’s ride, she’s hit every boozery and festival in this neck of the Blue Ridge. “I’ve had people ask to buy this,” she tells me from the driver’s seat of the 2000 Toyota Echo purchased used in 2003. “I had someone from Stoney Creek want to buy this because he had one that ran 500,000 miles.” She turns the ignition key to show me the odometer reading: 312,034. In spite of the driver-side visor being held up by a fish lure (genius!), Lisa’s black Echo – a unicorn in the sub compact car world that’s amassed a cultlike following – still has some life left. And it’s been a good life. 15 years ago Lisa was hitting a bunch of music festivals. She was on the exit ramp to one of the first Bonaroos when someone rear-ended and totaled her Nissan Sentra. When she got back home from the festival, she

started researching a new ride and settled on the Echo, which Toyota no longer makes. “I bought it because it was rated the most dependable car.” Aside from that, the stickered-up sedan has become a Rockfish Valley icon as it’s logged thousands of miles – an average of 18,000 a year – zooming up and down Route 151. A food and beverage industry vet, Lisa used to work at Devils Backbone before transitioning to a sales manager position at a Charlottesville t-shirt company. In many ways, she’s been behind the wheel of the Brew Ridge Trail awakening. But after getting rear ended a few months ago (it wasn’t the first time), Lisa took it as a sign to start searching for a new dependable ride: a Jeep Patriot. As for Echo Mobile? She’s giving it away to a local who could use a dependable car, even if it means it may only chug along for another year. asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My kids want to be on their phones all the time. How much is too much? Children these days, and adults for that matter, are immersed in digital media including television, video games, social media, and other types. Sometimes the time we spend on digital media can take away from other healthy activities and we need to prioritize how we spend our time. Overuse of media increases the risk of obesity, sleep problems, cyber bullying and poor school performance. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under 18 months should not have any time on digital media other than video chatting with family and friends who are not nearby. No screen times is recommended for 18-24 months but if it present it should be high quality programming and well supervised. Children 2 to 5 years should limit screen time to 60 minutes daily of high quality supervised programming. Children 6 and older should have consistent limits on the time they spend on media and what type
of media they are consuming. They should be supervised so that you know what things they are being exposed to. Media should not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity, hands on exploration, face to face social interactions and other healthy behaviors. I encourage you to have designated media free times such as meal times and media free places such as bedrooms. This may require a change on behalf of parents to model these healthy behaviors. And most importantly, talk to your children about their digital media use and how to find balance with this and the other healthy parts of their lives. My new iPhone tells me the average daily time I spent on it each week. Look at yours and your kids screen time and make sure that is balanced with other healthy recommendations, especially adequate sleep and exercise. What’s happening in Nelson? 2018 Third Quarter residential real estate summary

The outlook continues to get better for sellers within the Nelson County real estate market. Of course, a gain for sellers can be a loss for buyers. Hence, if you are looking to make a purchase, now is the time to move forward before inventory dwindles and prices and rates become less favorable for a purchase. Here is a quick market summary, with data extracted from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors Multiple Listing Service. Q1-Q3 Countywide Overview – 210 residential properties sold in Q1Q3 of 2018 which represents a 12% increase from the same time period in 2017 when 188 properties sold. Q1-Q3 Statistical Comparisons – Q1-Q3 2017 recap: 188 sales, median $250,000, average price $298,211, average price per sq ft $135.26, Days on Market (DOM) 185, median DOM 83. Q1-Q3 2018: 210 sales, median $231,500, average price $271,968, Average
price per sq ft $136.62, DOM 144, median DOM 78. Positive strides were achieved except for median and average selling prices. However, average price per sq ft increased. More condos sold (18% increase) and this may have played a role in reducing the median and average prices. Condos are often smaller and typically sell for less than detached homes. The 2018 Q1-Q3 sold median for detached homes was $300,000 compared to $137,500 for condos. Properties took 6% fewer days to sell when comparing the median DOM. Inventory has also been dwindling. There are currently 241 properties for sale at an average price per sq ft of $163.09 compared to 251 this time last year at a price per sq ft of $166.52. The current asking price per sq ft is 19% higher than the sold price per sq ft; I often refer to this difference as the gap between “wish for” pricing and true market value. If you plan to sell, make sure that you

set your asking price based on sold comps and not on inflated, unsold properties. Setting a market-driven price can make the difference in being “Sold” and not just “For Sale.” The properties currently for sale have been lingering on the market for an average of 246 days and counting. Q1-Q3 Sales Summary by Locality – Nelson County sales encompass three main markets: Wintergreen (mountain) with 111 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 27 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 72 sales. When comparing Q1-Q3 2018 sales with Q1-Q3 2017 sales, two markets had positive growth in sales. Wintergreen had the most significant increase at 22% followed by Stoney Creek at 8%. The county market held steady with 72 sales each period. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales: 111 properties sold representing 46 detached homes

The strongest month for Q1-Q3 was September with 30 sales followed by August with 28 sales. The slowest month was July with only 19 sales. On a Friday afternoon, a spunky little girl named Lilyahna is on her pink 2-wheeler kicking up dust along the gravel driveway, waiting for her big brother to get off the big yellow bus. She knows I’m here to do a story on him but she has a pitch of her own.

“Look what I can do,” she says, pleading for me to shift my gaze away from the road to the backyard, where she’s dare deviling around trees and flower beds. “She took those training wheels off a few days ago,” her dad tells me, home from work with tired eyes ready for the weekend. I turn the down the glass of tea he offers and it’s good timing because Bus 16 is turning the corner. My watch says 4:31. Out steps 9-year-old Landen Day, who has the rare distinction of being related to the bus driver. It’s his grandmother, Robin Rowe Fitzgerald, the reason why I’m at their home in the first place. “Would you want do a story on a little boy?” she asked me one morning at a local coffee shop. It’s been a good 30 years since I was Landen’s age but I still know that when a school bus driver asks you a direct question, you look up from your lap and listen. Clearly a proud grandmother, Robin whipped out her phone to show me some of the pictures her grandson’s been taking (some good enough to run in a local features magazine like ours). A grandmother bragging about her littles isn’t unique. But there is something rare and special about her relationship with Landen.

“This one here with his scoliosis ...” she says, motioning to Landen, who’s traded in his school pack for the camera backpack he’s unzipping, “… going back and forth to Rochester, we have never missed a trip. I think that’s where the bond came from. We’re just two peas in a pod.” Landen was born with an abnormal curvature of the spine but thankfully, doctors caught it quickly. But those early years meant many, many trips to Rochester, New York to treat his condition. “I go to New York,” Landen explains to me when we have a private moment. “Sometimes my mom and dad and my Pop-Pop take me. We have to travel West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York.” As a family, they’ve logged hundreds of miles over the years to get Landen’s back straightened. And for Robin, that may be how her bond with Landen began to form. Even with handheld screens and devices, long road trips involve a lot of looking out the window. “He will say, ‘Nana, look at that.’ … and I’ll say ‘Look at that mountain range or look at the windmills for energy along Route 15.’ And when I noticed that he started picking out stuff, and then I’m like, okay, ‘Would you like to learn to take pictures with me?’” Though Landen was born with a bum spine, there was nothing wrong with his eyes or his heart, with how he saw and felt the world. And as he gives me a tour of the backyards that connect to his — this is land that has been parceled up to family members over the years — there’s no telling how old this little boy’s soul is. “My great grandma and great grandma used to live here and when they passed away, we had to fix this part right here …” Landen tells me, pointing to the deck railing, his Nikon hanging from his neck. “I have my great grandpa’s radio. And I’ve got all kinds of pictures of him … “ The boy speaks of those possessions like another might speak of a treasured baseball card collection.

“When they passed away we started to clean out the house. When they passed away I didn’t do much. The only thing I [did] was take pictures and find some stuff with my Nana.” He would “find some stuff with Nana.” Like the blooming bush behind the brick rancher. Click. Or the birds lined up on the roof line. Click. Zoom. Click. And the old 1966 Chevy Impala SS on blocks, a rusty relic once driven by Landen’s Pop-Pop. Now, it’s another cool thing Landen can aim his lens at. Puttering around the yard with a camera is how this 3rd grader has been processing the events in his life. “What is it about taking pictures that you like so much?” I ask him. “Well, I don’t know. I’m still learning.” Nana nods, admitting that she too is still quite the amateur. Even so, she and her grandson have started selling prints of pictures they take together on road trips. “Do you know where Purple Cow is?” Landen asks me with the slightest of little boy lisps. The place is over near Waynesboro. “Sometimes we sell over there. And sometimes we sell it at the fire house. And now it’s me and Nana’s first time selling at Bold Rock.” He snaps off the lid of a plastic storage box. “My picture right here is a blue jay on a stick! My other one is this red, orange, yellow flower …” And then he pulls out a picture he and Nana took along the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of their many Saturday photography road trip destinations. “We like to get lost. Well, me, not so good,” he says. “He just started going on trips with me,” Robin adds. “We get in the truck, pack our lunch, pack all of our camera gear, tripods, our coats, flashlights, water and I ask him where he wants to go and he says, ‘Parkway,’ … I drive, he navigates.” There’s the time they crept along too deep down a fire trail in the National Forest and topped a ridge, only to accidentally end up in West Virginia.

“I feel scared when we get lost,” Landen sheepishly admits. “I feel like we might not find our way home.” But if anyone can find their way back home it is Nana, the grandma behind the wheel of Bus 16, who is more than a bus driver. “When I see a sunrise, I say, ‘Look kids, at the sunrise!’ Or if I see a deer or anything. A bear. I tell the kids about it and they will say, ‘Stop, Nana!’” She’ll hit the breaks and let the kids with cameras get off the bus to snap pictures. “If they want to do it, I’m going to do it for them.” Because one day Landen will trade his lisp and the wayward bend in his spine for clear words and a strong back. Too big to ride Bus 16 but never too old for a road trip, he’ll help his precious Nana into his car and get lost with her again. BRL

I’m trying to see this world through Harry Potter spectacles. Well, okay, they’re prescription Ray Bans, but I’m about to enter a realm built on the foundation of millions of imaginations, created by one. One Joanne Rowling. It is said good things come to those who wait. Rowling was waiting for a late train traveling from Manchester to London in 1990 when she conceived the glimmer of the Harry Potter tale. Seven years later J.K. Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Clear the tracks. The Potter series has sold over 500 million copies translated into 80 languages. The entire franchise is estimated to be worth at least 25 billion US dollars. Those franchise rights are fastidiously guarded as Staunton event originator, Sarah Lynch, can attest. Warner Brothers contacted her to be certain her brainchild, “Queen City Mischief and Magic” a celebration of all things Harry Potter, was copyright infringement free. It would take a force greater than Hollywood to slow Sarah Lynch down as her wizardry comes from her heart. It began when she picked up the original book and started reading to her first-grade son, Henry. Mother and son were enthralled.
Lynch says, “There are so many Golden Rules embedded in the books.” She subscribes especially to the dictums of acceptance, tolerance, and the notion that all souls are capable of benevolent sorcery. A clear case of the pot calling the cauldron black. The Rowling/Harry Potter series is devoured by the young and the mature alike. The older reader embraces the rite of passage while the younger might read, and reread, the embedded labyrinth of paths to maturity. Fielding an inquiry as to the revenue significance to Staunton, Lynch simply shares a story, “A retailer came into my restaurant (Baja Bean) after the festival and told me they had had doubts they would be able to stay in business until Christmas. This one weekend made it possible for them to cover the rent and buy inventory – possible to stay in business. I cried all day.”

The future of the event? Sarah envisions a smaller, tighter footprint concentrating activities. For a woman who can conjure mermaids and mermen, actual merpeople lolling about in pools of water there really can be no boundaries. The city of Staunton has maintained a population of around 25,000 for the past 100 years. For the last weekend in September of 2018 city authorities braced to receive an anticipated influx of over 10,000 visitors. One of the founders of the event tells me there are this weekend visitors from Australia, Great Britain, and lands as remote as Tennessee. Staunton Police Officer Nuffer comments, “This is one of the best crowds. I worked this last year too. We have never had a second of trouble, everybody is just as nice as can be.” The crisp of this Saturday morning has invigorated a circle of boys brandishing wands and spouting spirited incantations. An appreciative adult sphere has gathered round them. There it is. The mischief. The magic. And what this observer had not counted on: the devotion. Dare say, this may be bigger than Christmas morning for many of the participants. A prim woman in a pink suit daintily holding a china teacup portrays the character of Dolores Umbridge. She says, “Harry Potter is a lovely place to go in your imagination.”

The day is warming and a familiar voice behind me says hello. It’s my neighbor, Leah, with her daughter, Sophie, riding on her back sporting a toile tutu and ballet slippers. We walk a few blocks together and the scene begins to blur. Sophie is of this place. That she’s dressed as a sugarplum is entirely appropriate, but then she is every Saturday morning when she goes for her lesson. Staunton has the blood type to host and energize this event. There’s no separating Staunton’s dreamy reality from what is being visited upon the “Queen City” this weekend. Leah and Sophie turn off into a flowering garden behind the R.R. Smith Center to paint “magic dragon eggs”. A group of visitors pause consulting their maps, a 16-page guide provided free by The Staunton News Leader. It includes a whimsical centerfold map detailing the location of activities and businesses transformed for the event.

There shopkeepers Nancy and Penny are selling bottles of butter beer. Penny, an owl enthusiast, has Mary Baldwin University’s collection of stuffed owls on display. Hogwart-robed, repp-tied, Harry Potters clutch their fuzzy stuffed owls and gaze at the real ones in wonder. I meet up with some friends on a downtown stoop. Put a couple of antique dealers and a graphic designer together with license to create and the “next year we could . . .” ideas are flowing. Joey has a carved cane he is openly pointing at people as he puts spells on them. For three days out of the year this is perfectly acceptable behavior in Staunton. I find myself feeling warm and fuzzy about this little city that welcomes imaginative dreamers with open arms, both residents and visitors. Conveniently, Staunton has a restored train station built in 1902. Visitors wait with palpable enthusiasm as the train (the nearby marshaled Buckingham Branch Line) pulls into the station and The Harry and The Hagrid of the festival disembark. Cameras are clicking as fast as Hagrid’s heels. All of Sarah Lynch’s humility cannot undo the obvious. Crafting this event is a tremendous undertaking fueled by dedication. With Sarah conducting, Staunton can expect that magical train to arrive on time every year. BRL
