thepublishers Why is Peyton so pouty is this picture? Maybe it’s because we can’t seem to find a pair of jeans that fit. Welcome to the club, little lady. As the kids approach their 5th and 3rd birthdays, I’m reminded of what a difference a 2 year gap makes. When he was Peyton’s age, Adam wouldn’t think of holding my hand as we navigated a parking lot. Thank goodness he never got hurt but he sure did make people test the brakes of their cars! Thank you, people. These days, Adam will actually hold my hand but it has to fit a certain way. If our palms don’t lock together like Legos, he stops us in our tracks to readjust. Peyton – who thankfully hasn’t inherited her brother’s desire to scramble through a maze of parked cars – likes to wrap her tiny hand around my pinky as we walk. Folks, I’m here to tell you that will never get old. That little girl who grabs my pinky had her first hair cut the other day. Skeptical at first at the thought of a new person fussing with her hair, she sat on my lap with a sucker in her mouth. The boing boing curls survived and now, whenever we pass the salon, she tugs at my pinky and asks to get her hair cut.

Five and Three. This age combination is so dear to us right now. They are starting to look like little people but the world is still so magical to them. During dinner the other night, the kids squealed when they saw a rabbit gnawing at the long stem of a black-eyed susan out back. “He’s eating his dinner,” I told them. Before the question left their lips, I nodded and they ran out the door (spooking the critter), and came back with flower stems in their mouths, hopping around the den like bunnies. Happy Birthday, kiddos! Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford SEPTEMBER 2013 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

SEPTEMBER 2013

basicnecessities

Café Wine and Cheese Shop

By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Special September If August’s theme was “oddballs”, September brings us “special.” Special light, special days and special wine. There’s a change to the light that seems to hold onto summer, while at the same time heralding fall. Even as the sun beams down, there’s something in the air—a touch of coolness to the breeze, shortening days, the late-summer sounds of katydids zztz-zztzing out their last hoorah—that feels like autumn. The carefree, out-all-night party of summer comes to its end, and a comforting quiets steals into our homes and hearts. And since sweet September straddles that arbitrary mark of red/white wine weather, red drinkers rejoice, as minds slip to fires and hearty glasses of Cabernet or Nebbiolo while white wine drinkers quaff quickly, grateful for once for that last trace of hot humidity. Max Richter Brauneberger Kabinett, 2011 – An impeccably made Riesling from Germany’s Mosel. If Riesling is one of the most misunderstood grapes, it is also one of the most versatile with great vintages and late harvest bottles capable of aging for decades—then morphing to complex, nutty, golden nectars with everything from classic

notes of diesel to lychees and peaches. The Kabinett makes an excellent partner with a wide range of food, including poultry, river fish, shellfish and cheese, and it’s as crystal clear and clean as September’s late-afternoon light. Jefferson thought the Riesling of the Brauneberger (translated “brownbacked”) mountain the best in the world. My recommendation: a chilled bottle on your back porch, a chunk of Roquefort cheese, a hunk of crusty bread, and September figs and pears. $20 Domaine de la Solitude, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2009 – I may be chomping the bit, but it’s almost Châteauneuf-du-Pape time. An exceptional value from an exceptional estate, one of the most ancient families in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which boasted two bishops… and a pope. Very smooth with a perfume of plums, prunes and roasted herbs. At $39 we think we’ve the lowest prices anywhere. But if still too steep, try the estate’s earthy Côtes du Rhône at $16. Loire Valley, vineyards and châteaux. May 2014. Reserve your spot: Kpfaltz@cstone.net.

VERONA

[ augusta county ] STORY by SHARON ZOUMBARIS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

Students tumble off the bus and are quickly wrangled into a circle by a tall man wearing a straw hat. One student invited into the center yells, “Whose farm is this?” and 60 kids answer,

“Our farm!”

Again and again they shout, “our farm,” until Coordinator W. Ryan Blosser is sure they truly understand. Then they march off into the rows of vegetables that snake across the landscape at the Project GROWS 10-acre farm in Augusta County.

Tiliyah Hodgins looks over the afternoon’s harvest as Project GROWS coordinator Ryan Blosser tries to get the kids to guess how many pounds of food they harvested and how many people it would feed. AUGUST 2013

Blosser, along with farm manager Sam Berenstain and staff members Jenna Clarke and Lisa Millette use the farm as a hands-on classroom for area youngsters to teach them about healthy food and nutrition with the goal of improving obesity rates among the Shenandoah Valley’s youngest residents. It’s a big idea to foster personal responsibility using tiny seeds and fresh vegetables; luckily there is a lot of community support behind it. Project GROWS first took root in 2010 thanks to the Regional Partners for Prevention Services (RPPS). The group was looking for a way to address rising obesity rates among area youngsters as part of their service to local families. Their solution was to promote healthy eating through gardening. With a grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth and from Augusta Health, the program came together through the collaboration of nine agencies including the Boys and Girls Club, Augusta Health’s Working on Wellness Program, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Mary Baldwin College, Head Start, the Office on Youth, the Shenandoah Valley Social Services, the Valley Community Services Board and the Virginia Cooperative Extension. This “many hands make light work” approach is evident all the way down to the kids who come to the farm each week starting in April and ending in August.

Tescia Brown and Jaden Archie reach to catch an onion while harvesting under the eye of Project GROWS staff member, Lisa Millette, at right.

Ken Williams and Amani Woods haul in a tub of potatoes that they helped harvest while visiting the Augusta County farm.

Haley Williams from the Boys and Girls Club of Staunton sniffs a hot pepper.

Hannah Williams from the Boys and Girls Club of Staunton, digs in to help harvest potatoes.

This year alone the program introduced more than 230 kids during over 700 summer visits to the whole cycle of planting, harvesting and finally eating something delicious. Project GROWS stands for Growing Responsibly & Organically with Sustainability. Organizers say when the kids taste carrots still warm from the sun, or see cucumbers magically turn into pickles during one of many nutrition lessons, they genuinely experience how delicious fresh produce can taste. Blosser and his staff see kids light up when they get their hands dirty or even when they just watch. “It’s fun here, “ Halie LeDuc giggled to Blosser when asked why she likes coming to Project GROWS. Blosser handed out th one of his many high 5’s to the 6 grader and complimented Halie on how she has blossomed this summer. He reminded her of how quiet she was last year. Halie’s wide grin is proof the program is making a difference. During another visit older students teamed up to pick onions and quickly realized tossing the baseball-sized vegetables was easier than car-

rying them across the garden. So each onion was pitched to students like Tescia Brown, who caught them like a seasoned infielder. New this year, Project GROWS added selling vegetables through the Wednesday Verona Farmers Market and through CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm shares to their farm visits and nutrition education, which is coordinated by board member Pat Casson. Project GROWS was inspired by Will Allen’s Growing Power in Wisconsin, an urban garden that since 1993 has produced 159 varieties of food and more importantly, jobs and training for thousands of Milwaukee’s youth. Like Growing Power, Blosser one day envisions Project GROWS educating the community while creating a bumper crop of jobs and internships for the students who visit the farm. As a local farmer, he already knows that fresh, local food is good. Thanks to Project GROWS, its staff, supporters and volunteers, the entire Shenandoah Valley will know it too. BRL SEPTEMBER 2013

CHARLOTTESVILLE

[ albemarle county ]

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

“We’re one big happy family,” says bass player Travis Book of his fellow Infamous Stringdusters. “It’s like a

never ending college road trip.

The Stringdusters have been together for seven years and have taken six bus tours, but they recently partnered with American Rivers and a few other outdoor companies (like Patagonia and Osprey) to do it up right. They’ve got a bus that sleeps 12, complete with driver, and they just wrapped up the first leg of their American Rivers Tour where they play music at night and raise water quality issues during the day. “Whether it’s tied to fracking or stream and water quality issues, it will be interesting to see if we can shed some light,” said Travis, who lives in the Rockfish Valley – the only band member to still live in Virginia. And when his Grammy-nominated band is not entertaining or educating the masses, they manage to have a little fun: skiing, writing new music, or taking a seven-day raft trip down the middle fork of the Salmon River – with their instruments, a film crew, and a writer. “We’re gonna do a little fishing, a little hiking, and a whole lotta floating.”

The most recent tour was the “Beach Tour” which went up the East Coast and then headed west – Colorado, Idaho, Montana – and ended up in Wyoming. Since then Travis has been playing solo around Nelson – the farmers’ market, Blue Mountain Barrel House, but the Stringduster’s bus and driver have a few months off before they set off again in Denver on September 13. The buses – more like a temperature-controlled version of the west wing of your college dorm – sleep 12, including the five Infamous Stringdusters, four crew members, and occasionally the band’s management team. With a lounge in the front, a lounge in the back, and a kitchen and sleeping area in between, there’s plenty of space to rehearse, relax, and recoup. And since the driver drives all night (and catches some Zs in a nearby hotel during the day), the band can get a lot more done during the day.

“We wake up wherever we’re supposed to be,” said Travis, who said they love to check out the local towns they end up in. “That really frees us up to do things. Like the cleanup. Or mountain biking. Plus we’re always learning new material and working on the live show. We stay pretty occupied and then we go have a big dinner and go to bed and the driver drives us another 8-12 hours through the night.” After the September leg of their tour, the Infamous Stringdusters will be back in Nelson for the Festy at Devils Backbone Brewing Company in October – which makes Travis pretty happy. “I will be sleeping in my bed at night,” he said. “I have a new baby at home, so I sleep a lot more when I’m on the bus, but it’s always great to be home. Credit repair solutions

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

My daughter just opened up a teen checking account and it prompted some discussion on managing money and the importance of good credit. While it will be many years before she applies for a loan, it is never too early to start thinking about credit and how it can positively or negatively impact the future. Having great credit can open doors such as the ability to get approved for a home loan or qualifying for a more favorable loan rate. Lower rates can turn into thousands of dollars in savings over the life of a loan. In some instance qualifying for a loan may hinge upon the rate. While you may not have control over rising interest rates, knowledge about credit scoring can empower you to build or improve your credit score resulting in a better qualifying rate. Here are a few tips to help understand and boost your credit score! Credit overview; a FICO score

is a grade on your overall credit worthiness. Scores range from 300 to 850. Interpreting scores: 800 and up – flawless (18% of the population); 720-799 – excellent; 680-719 – good/great; 620-679 – average/fair; 580-619 – poor credit; 500-579 – bad credit; Below 500 – start rebuilding! Factors in your score: 35% – Payment history; 30% – Amounts owed; 15% – Length of credit history; 10% – New type of credit; 10% – Types of credit used. Get a copy of your credit report; you can’t begin to improve your score until you know what exactly it is you need to tackle. To get a free copy of your credit report visit www. AnnualCreditReport.com Clean up your credit report; sometimes things slip through the cracks and something that you paid off or previously cleared up may still be showing on your credit report. Dispute inaccuracies. Cut up the credit card; one of the

Marlo Allen

worst things you can do is to continue to pile on the debt. Stop accumulating debt and making the situation even more insurmountable. Remove the card from your wallet and resist the temptation to use it. Don’t max out the card OR close the account; Carrying high balances that approach the available credit limit can negatively impact credit scores. Even if you are not using the card, keep the account open. As the debt is being paid down, the available credit will increase and so will your credit score. Don’t apply for more credit; as long as you are in credit repair mode, avoid making any new applications for credit. Saving 10% on a department store purchase is not worth the additional hit on your credit. Get current on delinquent accounts; an estimated 35% of your credit score is based on payment history. Getting current on delinquent accounts can make a huge difference

$1,000 down = land + home

in your score. Contact creditors; if you are in a difficult financial situation, call your creditor to ask for assistance. Be cautious; some hardship programs may help relieve the current financial burden, but can negatively impact your credit (not making your payments can too!). Pay off your debts; make a GetOut-Of-Debt Plan. Instead of growing your debt, the goal is to reduce it. Seek professional assistance and stick with the plan! Even if you think you may not qualify, contact a loan offer or financial advisor for further guidance. It is possible to see results that can get you in a home in a matter of months! LONG DISTANCE FRIENDSHIPS by LYNN COFFEY

We all have them; friends who are dear to our hearts but happen to live in another part of the country. For us it is Brad and Amy Herzog, west coasters hailing from Pacific Grove, California. We met this young couple 17 years ago in the spring of 1996 when they knocked on our cabin door and asked if they could interview us for a book they were in the process of writing. They were traveling around the U.S. in a large Winnebago RV, gathering material for their first travel memoir called States of Mind. The book started as a search for small, out-of-the-way places to see if there were still people who exemplified the American virtues their towns were named after. Places like Wisdom, Montana; Honor, Michigan; Faith, South Dakota; Pride, Alabama; Joy, Illinois; Hope, Mississippi and others. States of Mind is the account of an amazing 10-month journey that ended in a heart-filling experience for Brad and Amy as they realized people of kindness and solid moral values could still be found in every American town. Marked on their map was the little mountain hamlet of Love, Virginia. As fate would have it, the Herzog’s stopped at the Nelson County Visitor Center located at the campground just up the road from where we lived. They asked the volunteer if there was anyone who lived in Love that could give a brief history of the village and meaning to the word Love. I guess the man thought we fit the bill and sent them to our door.

We hit it off immediately despite the fact there was a generation between us and we were on opposite ends of the spectrum. It was city folks vs. mountain folks right from the start but there was also an honesty which allowed us the freedom to simply be who we were. The relaxed interview was held around our kitchen table and after a pleasant few hours we bid our goodbyes and wished Brad and Amy a safe trip across America. Several years passed and the memory of the interview and subsequent book was lost in the busyness of day to day living. Until one afternoon I walked out the lane to our mailbox and found a package waiting inside. Curious, I showed it to Billy and we went in to open it. Imagine our surprise when the wrappings came off and I held a beautiful book in my hands. There it was, States of Mind, just like Brad had promised. On the front cover amid the other small town signs that made up the 18 chapters of the book, was the “Love” sign Billy had made for our mailbox. It appeared again at the end of Brad’s dedication page for his sweet wife, Amy. And low and behold, printed on a map of the United States over the state of Virginia was the name of our humble village! That alone thrilled us but when we turned to page 183, we were awestruck by the words Brad wrote and the photographs Amy took for our chapter. In fact, after reading the entire book, we had to agree on one thing … the boy can write! We wrote a letter and sent it to their California address, thanking them for making us a part of States of Mind and from that time on a long distance friendship was established and has simmered along nicely over the years. We have exchanged cards, phone calls, and several visits from the Herzogs when Brad’s two other travel memoirs were published and they were on book tours promoting them. Eight years ago we got to meet their two young sons who were traveling with them across country. This past July Brad and Amy stopped again as part of their 10th summer traveling for Winnebago, promoting the joys of RV-ing. This summer they drove the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, seeing the breathtaking mountain scenery that Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee have to offer. We had a delightful visit before they left Love and were once again surprised to find ourselves included in Brad’s blog page, along with another photo of us sitting on the porch swing, just like the one Amy took 17 years ago. You never know when a sweet friendship might develop. It doesn’t require like-interests, lifestyles or the same vicinity to blossom and grow. All it takes is opening your heart to those around you and respecting the differences that each person brings to a relationship, knowing these differences can enrich and sustain your soul in the years we are allotted on the earth. For that reason we thank God for bringing the Herzogs to our cabin door back in 1996 and allowing us to be a small part of their lives for all these years. Safe travel, dear friends, and Godspeed. backbone We’ve been covering the progress of Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland from its inception through adolescence, including the rearing of the Outpost in Lexington. Recently, both locations have been experiencing growth spurts as they undergo expansion. “We got an upgrade in the cooler size which gives us twice as much room: more room to store beer, more room to have beer going out the door,” says base camp head brewer Jason Oliver who’s been with the company since its opening in 2008. “We had our brewery space expanded too. That’s going to allow us to get some special small batch stuff out. We are constantly doing different things here and this will allow us to share those with more people.”

The development at base camp in Nelson County means a growth in production size by about 25%. This doesn’t even include the extension to their stage, a dais most popularly known for hosting musical events such as The Festy Experience. And with similar German-engineered Rolec fermentation systems in place at both locations, it’s not just quantity that they’re striving for, it’s quality. “This is the test kitchen, this is where things get developed, this is where recipes get fine tuned. And then we pick our favorites and we scale them up, and then they’re put into production over in Lexington and then they get bottled and kegged and sent out all over the state,” says Jason. “It’s similar in the basic approach to it, even though over there [in Lexington] is computer automated, and there’s a great repeatability to it. So, what I can do here can be replicated over there.” Out in Lexington, lead brewer and Virginia Tech Food-Science grad, Nate Olewine is looking at things on a much bigger scale. And you know all those six-packs you’ve been seeing on the shelves in grocery stores and gas stations across the region? You’ve got this guy to thank for that. “We’re in Virginia and Dc and Maryland right now and that’s part of this whole expansion right here. I think it will make things a little easier in that we can produce a lot more beer into these tanks and then maybe have a surplus of beer here, so we may have a little bit of a built in inventory. We just can’t brew stuff here fast enough,” says Nate. With the general public purchasing the product at such a high rate of speed, this expansion is really all about keeping pace with the consumer. “We’re creating a second building that is fifteen thousand square feet, which will house our current bottling system that’s in the original building,” Marketing Director Heidi Crandall explains. “We have, in the past year, expanded in our original building which had room to grow by putting in additional fermenters. We’re gonna go from approximately twenty three this year to forty thousand barrels and with the expectation of being able to carry up to one hundred thousand barrels with the second building and the outdoor fermenters that we have.” When short and long term goals are constantly being adjusted to compensate for increasing popularity, it’s hard to keep that excitement bottled up. “We’re growing so rapidly right now that before long these tanks might be inadequate too,” says Nate Olewine. The tanks may be inadequate, but their contents sure ain’t. BRL

5 different ways to repurpose an old

cold storage building Stacks of Lineberry Carts that will be restored and refinished for use as furniture have a temporary home at the old Arrington Cold Storage Building. It is one of five businesses run my husbandwife team Jeremy and Jamie Hale. Jamie manages Buteo Books, an online book store specializing in birding books.

If you think operating one small business in a rural community has its challenges, think about what juggling five of them must entail. Yet that is what Jeremy and Jamie Hale are doing in the Arrington Cold Storage building, originally built to provide apple growers with a place to store locally grown fruit for distribution to a much wider area. When the young couple purchased the mostly empty cold storage facility in 2006 from S. Vance Wilkins Jr., only a small part of the huge structure was being used. They set to work cleaning it up and modifying it to hold an architectural and industrial salvage business, a bookstore and warehouse, a recycling operation, and added residential storage to the commercial storage business already in place. Jeremy had a history of work in construction and renovation and was not daunted by the prospect of long days sweeping, scrubbing, patching holes in the roof, repairing the dilapidated lighting system and securing broken doors and windows. And Jamie had worked for Buteo Books, a mail-order science and natural history bookstore they had purchased from Alan Hale and Barbara Fiske. So setting up the shelving and office space to operate and expand that business was right up her alley.

In 2007 Jeremy’s passion for auctions and salvaging old materials and tools led him to bid on 100 factory carts made by the Lineberry Foundry and Machine Company in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and used by Hooker Furniture in Martinsville, VA to move things around the factory floor. He got them for $2 each. “Everybody wondered what I was doing with these ugly old carts, and Jamie agreed,” Jeremy recalls. But he saw the possibility of using the carts as furniture – coffee tables and end tables. “Someone suggested I check out the Restoration Hardware catalog and they were selling for $1,400 each” after having been restored. He set to work, taking a cart completely apart, sanding the wooden sides of the frame carefully so as not to erase the Lineberry Co. stenciling, wire brushing the metal castings and painting or polishing them, sanding down the wooden top and finishing it with polyurethane, then reassembling it. Along with other local woodworkers, Jeremy has restored and sold hundreds of carts since then, and recently purchased 1,500 more. They sell the standard cart for about $500 and up. The restored carts can be seen online at nelsonstoragellc.com. continued on page 32

The large rooms in the Cold Storage Building didn’t just lend themselves to residential and commercial storage and industrial salvage. While touring the warehouse with the Thomas Jefferson Planning District, which was considering the facility for a sustainable forestry program, Susan McSwain, then the Nelson County solid waste and recycling coordinator, saw a different opportunity. McSwain saw the benefits to the county in having a local recycler. She encouraged the Hales to look into post-consumer recycling. They did so and found they could get started with a relatively small investment – mainly a small baler capable of compressing paper, cardboard and metal cans. After a couple of months of trial and error, they were able to work with the trucks delivering loose material and make bales that mills could buy for recycling. “We were lucky the needs matched what we already had – a large covered area, a heavy duty electrical system, a loading dock, heavy equipment and storage space. The ability to store baled material is the key to the survival of our operation,” Jeremy says, “because prices fluctuate so greatly in the commodities market.” “Right now it just pays for itself with one fulltime employee, but if we can continue to grow, we hope to make it profitable and expand our hiring,” Jamie adds. It has been successful enough to allow them to purchase a much larger and more automated baler that can compress plastic as well as cardboard, paper and metal. McSwain had projected substantial cost savings and convenience for the county and that has hap-

pened. “Their operation is saving the county a lot of money,” she says. “The next closest place to send our recyclables is 50 miles away. The trucks get 5 miles per gallon, not to mention the drivers’ time and maintenance costs. It’s a huge savings.” The Hales have sought out other sources of materials, collecting cardboard from local businesses, and buying aluminum from community individuals on Mondays. In 2011, the Hales purchased the building next door, built for the Ford Motor Company around 1918 to assemble and sell Model Ts. “Jeremy sees beauty in historic buildings where others might see a wreck,” says Jamie. After renovating the building enough to preserve it they leased the space to a local company to store cars. “Our plan is to complete renovations to make it look like it did in the 1920s,” says Jeremy. This year the couple renovated a section of the cold storage building to house Buteo Books, where Jamie had worked for 15 years. She takes orders over the Internet and phone and ships books all over the world. The addition of this shipping department gives them the ability to expand into storage and shipment of products for other businesses. They already use it for shipping antiques from the industrial and architectural salvage business they operate. They even have an entire heart pine log cabin built in the late 1800s stored. Jeremy took it apart, numbering all the component parts for re-assembly. As if five businesses were not enough, they dream of having an event facility. But for now the task is making the buildings function as businesses that can support even more renovations. BRL

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT...

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

The Textbook Driveway With one of the wettest seasons on file, driveways, in particular those not paved, are suffering if extensive work had not been done to protect them from water damage. Protecting your driveway is more than a one time, one shot deal of grade, gravel and go – it is a dynamic process of continued light grading and the addition of gravel to prevent major damage. A textbook driveway and surrounding area is like a flattened letter ‘W’ – a ditch with grass on the sides and a broad, barely noticeable hump of gravel, or crown, in the middle. However, even with this textbook shape, driveways require considerable thought – in particular in rural, mountainous Nelson County. Here are some tips to keep your drive in good shape even in the rainiest of seasons. When it comes to driveways, first and foremost you should determine if any runoff water flow is impacting your driveway. By installing berms, or low mounds of soil covered in sod/grass, you can prevent adjacent water flow from impacting your driveway and lead to a tremendous savings in gravel and maintenance. These berms should typically be installed on angles less than 60 degrees (in relation to the ‘fall of the hill’) so that rushing water turns (soft angle) instead of jump out of the ditch (hard angle). These berms should also be deep enough to handle a severe storm, long enough to carry the water until it can be safely deposited in a spot where it cannot damage the drive, and broad enough to allow for you to cut them with a riding mower. Often times contractors will use a series of berms to control the flow of water around a drive. As you approach the drive from the surrounding area, there should

be broad ditches to both sides of the driveway. These two ditches are designed to prevent runoff water from impacting the drive AND safely remove the water that actually falls on the drive. These ditches will run the entire length of the driveway and will, again, be broad enough to mow as well as carry a substantial amount of water away from the drive. Remember that if this ditch, at any point is not wide enough, water will impact the sides of your drive and cause considerable damage – a process that will start small and grow over time. The center of the driveway should be crowned so that a drop of rain that falls in the middle of your road will want to flow to the left and right and not remain in the driveway. If you could envision the center of the crown (which is the center of the drive), the driveway will slowly fall going both ways until it reaches the center of the ditch, found in the above paragraph, and then reestablish grade with the surrounding area. Yes, it is more difficult in the winter to push a heavy snowfall since your driveway has a pronounced crown in the center, but a qualified snow removal company should not ‘push to gravel’ anyway - proper snow removal should leave a skim of snow on the gravel after the area has been pushed. Culverts are necessary when large amounts of water are contained on one side of the driveway and must move to the lower side due to both elevation and driveway dynamics. Proper sizing of culvert pipes is imperative and should not be done by an inexperienced contractor. Remember, it is better to err to the larger size as an undersized culvert and the resulting water impact will most certainly destroy your driveway.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, Why can’t I ever seem to get it right in terms of being healthy? I feel like giving up. It is easy to get frustrated when we try to do things and they don’t turn out exactly as we would like. This is true in many areas of life, whether it be in school, in our jobs, in sports, in almost everything. It is tempting to throw in the towel and say, ‘forget it, I can’t do it. I’m not good enough.’ My recommendation in these circumstances is to lower your expectations a little. This may sound like giving up, but it is not. There is a proverb usually attributed to the French writer, Voltaire - ‘perfect is the enemy of good.’ We are told that we should exercise 30 minutes a day, but if 30 minutes is not available we don’t exercise at all. If we can’t resist the temptation of eating some cookies, we eat the whole box instead. If we don’t think we can get an A on the test, we don’t study at all. If we can’t win the race we don’t even try. You get the idea. If we can’t do it exactly right then we don’t do anything.

A member of Sentara Healthcare.

When doing a project it is estimated that we spend 20% of our time doing the first 80% of the work and 80% of the time doing the last 20%. Sometimes we need to be satisfied with the first 80%. This may not be perfect but is better than not getting anything accomplished. This is not to say that completing the entire job is not important, especially if you are a builder, or a surgeon! But sometimes, a good result is better than no result. So if you only have 15 minutes to exercise, take advantage of those 15 minutes. If you can’t give up all the ice cream, eat a smaller amount that usual. If you are really attached to your soft drinks and can’t stop completely, cut back on them. Take small steps and eventually they will add up. You may eventually get close to perfect. But even if you do not have perfect health, at least you can have good health. theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Exercising While You Work Your new office perk could be a walking desk that fits over a treadmill so that you can exercise and work simultaneously. Sound like fun? Called a “Trek Desks,” it is an apparatus that fits your computer over a treadmill. Reviewing the website, Trek Desks boasts 60 (no less) benefits of walking while you work. These are the same benefits that occur from regular exercise, not exclusively from using Trek Desk. They did forget one particularly dangerous hazard and that is falling while walking on the treadmill which hurts a lot. I fell once and got a pretty good skin burn and I wasn’t working on the computer. I just turned to look at something and my foot snagged the edge of the runner. Your balance has to be pretty good to type and walk at the same time! Add wearing bifocal glasses to the picture! Yikes! There are significant strengths to taking short breaks during the work day to exercise. A twenty minute walk or doing yoga at lunch time. Using exercise tubing or light weights at your desk. Or ten minutes of meditation.

These exercise breaks reduce stress levels, increase energy levels and metabolism, increase blood flow to the brain, improve fitness and wellness reducing sick time from work, and increase productivity. The benefits of exercise are cumulative so add these exercise minutes into your weekly workout schedule. There are additional advantages to exercising when you are not working. It is important to take a break from work so that the mind focuses on the present moment whether it is enjoying a walk or hike on a beautiful day. A scenic bike ride with a friend. An exercise class with a group of friends. Training for the next race, match or event. This allows the mind and body to recharge. It is important to create such opportunities which aids in keeping life in perspective. It helps your outlook and ability to cope with life stressors effectively. I enjoy exercising outside so the Trek Desk isn’t for me but it might benefit office workers who only sit during the day, and perhaps, it is a tool to help folks start walking. Just hold on!
