thepublishers Like all families, we have issues. 100 to be exact. 100 issues ago our kids were two lovable hounds, Millington and Jerky, who have since passed away. Nick is our floppy-eared beagle boy these days and when Adam isn’t pulling his ears back like an airplane, the hound enjoys being a part of the family. He even gets to pen this column every year for April Fools’ Day. And the timing couldn’t be better for Issue 100. Almost by accident, Adam learned how to skip count by 10s the other day using dimes. Ten, twenty, thirty ... one hundred! If we had a dime for every issue we’ve printed, that would be a lot of dimes, Adam. With his recent fascination with coins, we decided to surprise him with a rare one. You would have thought we had gotten a teenager a sports car when we gifted him a hard-to-find half dollar. Now all he talks about are half dollars and John F. Kennedy, how quarters have ridges on them, and how Jefferson’s on a nickel, which has smooth edges. The other night after Peyton had gone down for the evening (she’s got this thing about watching a stomp rocket video on her dad’s phone which makes the routine quite inter-

esting), Adam tugged at me to lay down and stay. Being on deadline, I unfortunately told him I had to go back downstairs and work some more and earn some dimes. “Get a gold coin!” the boy deadpanned. I like the way he thinks. I am thinking about making a 10 x 10 grid, maybe using a rotary cutting pad, to illustrate the meaning of 100. Using pennies, I’ll have him fill up the grid and tell him that’s one dollar. And to get a gold coin, we’d have to stack that grid at least 100 pennies high. So back to my original thought: we have issues. Here’s to 100 more! Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford JULY 2013 Blue Ridge LIFE 5

June is Pintxo

basicnecessities

Café Wine and Cheese Shop

By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Red, White and Rosé July 4th is nearly here and while many people will be reaching for a cold beer (we sure have an abundance of great breweries from which to choose) we here at Basics will be drinking wine. I offer three color choices incase your hand, or taste, also leans that way. Red, white and, in the absence of blue (plenty of blue bottles for diehard traditionalists, and then there’s always food coloring) . . . rosé! What better way to say, happy summer, happy July and happy Independence. And we know Mr. Jefferson would approve. White: Crios Torrontes, 2012 – Susana Balbo is the winemaker at Crios, and in a country dominated by male winemakers, Susana stands out not only for her gender, but also for her incredible skill. Torrontes is Argentina’s signature white grape with aromas—peach, apricot—similar to Viognier. Look for a lightly floral nose with hints of honeydew, tangerine and lychee. A great sushi wine or picnic wine, and equally good with Mexican food. 91 pts. Parker. $18 Rosé: Becker, 2012 – For eight of the last nine years, the Becker estate

CORE

located in the Pfalz on the border of Alsace, has been the Paris-based foodie’s guide, Gault-Milhau’s top pick for Pinot Noir in Germany. I tasted the rosé for the first time several months ago and was impressed. Vivid fruit, but the wine has depth and elegance— much more than just fresh fruit. Taste it and feel winemaker’s Fritz’s successful attempt to “transfer the gift of nature into fine wine.” $18 Red: J.K. Carriere, Pinot Noir, Vespidae, 2009 – My first love in wine is and always has been Burgundy, so I am always on the lookout for excellent Pinots. Pinot Noirs make good summer-drinking reds because they’re lighter, although the J.K. Carriere is big and rich. In owner/winemaker Jim Prosser’s words, “smells like an earthy, smoky plum and juniper berry jam.” And the Vespidae? The Latin name of the family of wasps that have almost killed Jim twice. Interesting that he puts it center-stage on the label. Perhaps a message to value each day as though it were our last. $42 Like a taste of adventure? Taste wine in Argentina! October 2013. STAUNTON

[ augusta county ] STORY by MARCIE GATES PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

Dave Young, Tony Jones and Frank Tumor chat as Abby the basset hound looks in the door to Armstrong’s Barber Shop.

A CUT ABOVE

THE REST

David Young is late for school but at least he’ll look sharp as he arrives tardy. “It’s his last week of school…This guy here has been my buddy since I opened up,” says Armstrong’s Barber Shop owner Kevin Armstrong as he trims the young man’s hair. “He comes in every two weeks. Instead of going to the hair salon, they’d rather come to the barber shop. It truly is an experience for ‘em. And this is his favorite part right here: the hot towel. He likes that.” Trying to beat the school bell, David caught a ride to A.R. Ware Elementary in “Petunia,” the ’55 Chevy Bel Air that had been parked out front all morning. Everything is old school here at this Staunton barber shop. From the classic red, white and blue barber’s pole outside to the two vintage barber chairs inside, right down to the authentic hot lather machine.

“Shorty, who used to own this barber shop years ago, I located him,” Armstrong recounts. (Let’s pause for a moment to recognize Shorty’s exemplary barber name). “I went up to Shorty’s house and I said, ‘I’d love to have me one of those old lather machines.’ He said he had one in storage. He said a lot of his customers come to me, so I was worthy of it.”

Landon Somer, 1-1/2 gets his haircut by Kevin Armstrong at Armstrong’s Barber Shop (above). Armstrong is Landon’s great-uncle. Terry Kirby plays his Gibson guitar while Somer Warren and her son Landon listen (below). One day a month Armstrong hosts a blue grass music night outside his shop.

And with over a decade of clipper-cutting skills behind him and a newlywed bride by his side, Armstrong’s ready to replant his roots. “I’m originally from this area. I went into the military directly out of high school. And when I got out I went to cosmetology school and graduated there in ’86. Seems like forever ago that I opened up my own barber shop in Scottsville for a total of thirteen years. And then I went to Charlottesville, Barracks Road Shopping Center at Staples Barber Shop,” Armstrong explains. “Then I took a little sabbatical for a while and all my friends and family kept telling me and sending me newspaper articles where the local barber shops had closed up. So, I just took a gamble, opened up a traditional barber shop, and so far all my friends in the community have been really supportive. It’s worked out really well. I haven’t been here a year yet and business is real good. And I’m glad to be back home.”

Dear Nelson County, It’s time to switch. Since 1921, Foster Fuels has been fueling the energy needs of families and businesses in Virginia. We started small and have grown to be a nationally recognized name in the industry for two simple reasons:

Best service.

3

We started out as a family-owned shop and we still are one. As one of the Virginia’s first Texaco distributors, we’re good at getting the job done and getting the job done right.

Best value.

Business is so good that Armstrong’s even decided to bring his twenty year old nephew, Aaron Springel, into the business to fill the empty station next to his. “I put him on the apprenticeship program,” says Armstrong. “He’s been a real big help.” Still fairly new to the trade, he’s sticking to crew cuts for a while. “He doesn’t want me giving anyone bald spots yet,” Aaron says smiling at his uncle. Only at Armstrong’s Barber Shop will you meet an affable Basset Hound named Abby, who incidentally was not there getting a haircut, a quiet gentleman pickin’ away at his acoustic guitar, and a barber; a man with more friends and family in the shop than you can count on both hands. But it’s not just the good haircut and uncensored conversation these men keep coming back for, it’s the tradition of it all. “Yeah, this is more of a family type of atmosphere. Everybody comes in and just hangs out. It’s an end of an era for sure. We’re keeping the tradition alive, the barber shop. And, as you can see, people like it,” says Armstrong. “You see, in a barber shop, a man can be a man.” And that, my friends, will never go out of style. BRL

Weddings | Private Parties Reunions | Gatherings Meetings | Workshops | Tours

This time of year, everyone’s making big plans. Some have decided to spend their daze sprawled across a beach somewhere, others may have chosen to go trekking through the mountains, and some lucky few managed to scrounge enough money together to hop across the pond for a couple months. No matter what route you’ve settled upon, there’s one thing everyone can still agree on: the dire importance of having a good book. At the end of those fun-filled summer days with the kids, sometimes that quiet time before bed can be the most precious. They slow down long enough to rest their sweaty little heads on your shoulder as you read them their favorite book and they listen intently as the story unfolds. Lazy Daisy, the Love Dog, by Marti Regan is a charming page-turner that demonstrates how everyone is good at something, even if it’s unexpected. And no one knows more about unexpected paths than the author herself. “I loved my thirty year career at NASA, where I retired as a Senior Executive responsible for R&D of Goddard Space Flight Center’s mission information systems and technologies. And while I certainly was able to apply creativity when solving mission challenges, I primarily utilized the left side of my brain with an emphasis on logical thinking, analysis, and accuracy,” says the multi-talented Marti. “It wasn’t until 2001 that I ventured into writing fiction. I’ve taken courses on writing, attended some workshops on writing children’s books, joined a children’s book critique group. I’ve enjoyed the learning process, and my right brain is more active these days.” Maybe your summer actually entails nothing more than hanging around your hometown, spending more time with your family, and living vicariously through your friends’ Facebook updates. Sunday drives have been a popular way of spending a beautiful day since the ‘20s, often considered aimless and unplanned; this may be why you need a full week to recover before attempting “family time” in such close quarters again. At least now we have, Sunday Drives - Cruising the Back Roads of Amherst& Nelson Counties, by Margaret G. Myers and Ann H. Rucker. This informative guide is a gold mine for those wanting to witness the historical beauty our local counties have to offer. Especially if you like knowing just how many miles of beauty you’re actually in for. Straightforward right from the start, it states, “Yes, time is precious; yes, gasoline is expensive. Nonetheless, both counties are lovely and well worth anyone’s time to cruise a few back roads.” Anyone living, visiting, or just driving through the Blue Ridge area can appreciate the slower pace that surrounds our home. For local author, Billy Coffey, it’s a point of pride. “I’m from Stuarts Draft, born and raised. Still live there about five minutes from where I grew up,” says Billy who’s been writing since high school. “It really reflects in my writing. It’s very laid back and very simple. But at the same time a lot of stuff happens, and sometimes it happens pretty quick. It’s a nice little balance.” His newest release, When Mockingbirds Sing, is a stunning novel that forces its reader to question, “What marks the boundary between a miracle from God and the imagination of a child?” and the back blurb alone will give you goose bumps. BRL

You can order Lazy Daisy, the Love Dog online at www.trafford.com. Sunday Drives and When Mockingbirds Sing are both available on Amazon.

Tips for Purchasing Land

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

If you have looked the world over and just can’t find your dream house, then it may be time to alter your plan and look for a dream lot. A good candidate for a land purchase is one that looks at an existing home and sees the shortcomings instead of the possibilities. This would be the right home “if only” it had x, y, or z. If you are unable to find that perfect home, then you may consider finding the perfect lot and building to YOUR specifications. Here are some points for consideration when purchasing undeveloped land. Suitability; ensure that the topography accommodates your specific building plans. Have the builder visit the location for a site review. If unable to coordinate this before the offer, incorporate a study period into the offer. In case the site is not suitable, be certain that you can terminate the contract without penalty.

Right of Way & Road Maintenance; there should be a deeded right-of-way in place for land not accessible by a public road. The deed should give you and future owners the right to access the land. When the land is not accessible via a public road, verify that a road maintenance agreement is in place so that everyone utilizing it is responsible for upkeep. Utilities; if public water and sewer are not available make an offer contingent upon these factors. Allow for a soil study period to ensure that a septic system, rated for the number of bedrooms that you require, can be installed. Check availability of electric, gas, cable and telephone services. If the lot does not currently have electric, make the offer contingent upon the seller providing a recorded electric easement. Easements; does someone else have the right to access the property?

Marlo Allen

Find out before you make an offer, or add a contingency that you must approve of existing easements. Restrictions; can you build what you want? If the land is located within a home owners association (HOA) review covenants and restrictions to understand potential limitations such as minimum house size. Also review zoning ordinances to ensure that the land can be utilized per your intentions. Survey; retrieve a plat/survey and locate the boundaries. If the survey is not current and there’s a question about the number of acres, especially for large acreages, make an offer for “X” dollars per acre as determined by a new survey. This will ensure that you are getting the exact amount of acreage purchased and nothing more or less. Environmental Liabilities; ask if there are any known underground oil or gas storage tanks and if they exist

negotiate who is to pay for removal. Other considerations; If you have already done your research and know that the land is priced right and meets your needs, make an offer with limited contingencies, no/minimal study period, and a quick closing. A seller may accept a lower price if the contract is strong on all other fronts. With 227 parcels of land available in Nelson County, you may want to enlist the help of a real estate professional to help you find that perfect parcel. If you plan to build, ask the agent for builder resources that will best match up to your site location, home style, and budget.

THE COCONUT MONKEY by LYNN COFFEY

Our granddaughter Renea just graduated from high school and along with her regular gift we gave her another she probably wasn’t expecting and one that’s sure to get a laugh. The tradition started when Billy and I married. Our youngest daughter, Bec, was in Virginia Beach when we surprised the family by eloping in the spring of 1993. When we returned from our honeymoon Bec handed us a beautifully wrapped wedding gift with a big smile on her face. I was giving her the “Oh, you shouldn’t have” speech when the final wrappings came off, the box was opened and there nestled in a bed of colorful tissue paper was a coconut monkey; the kind that are carved from coconuts and are sold in every cheap

souvenir shop along the beach front. Ours was particularly ugly with bare arms, horn rimmed glasses and a set of red painted bongo drums. I lifted it from its box and was trying to be very diplomatic about my thank you when Bec suddenly laughed out loud and said, “Well, one thing’s for sure… you won’t get any duplicates!” That’s when I knew I would fit well into our new blended family. The monkey sat on top of our bookshelf until that summer when our son Mike celebrated his 25th birthday in July. It was then I put the monkey in a box and took pains to wrap it up with lovely paper with matching bow on top. I handed it to Mike on his big day and he, just like me a few months earlier, began to protest that we shouldn’t have. We all watched as he opened the box and hoisted the monkey for all to see. Bec screamed, “You gave away my wedding gift!” I smiled innocently and told her I didn’t want to hoard the love that went into selecting such a thoughtful present but wanted to pass it on. That’s when they knew their step-mother would fit well into the new blended family. From that point on, the monkey made the rounds, showing up when we least expected it. Whoever was in possession of it would let enough time elapse so everyone would forget that they may get it next. He was always a complete surprise. We never gave him to any of the grandchildren until they were the age they could understand that he had to be passed on and not kept permanently by one person. He showed up for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and every other important event the family celebrated. He’s been Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, a pumpkin and Uncle Sam. He arrived at our daughter-in-law Audrey’s baby shower, wearing a Pampers diaper, a terry cloth bib and a pacifier with appropriate palm trees painted on it. He surprised Billy on his 70th birthday and my mother on her 80th and she loved it! We dressed him in a black cape, gave him fangs and skeleton earrings to surprise our daughter Teresa on her October 30th birthday. I got him for Mother’s Day one year and he sported a new “Mom” tattoo on his arm. I was in possession of the monkey when our daughter Bec got married and the girls of the family dressed him up in a bridal gown with matching veil and placed him in the middle of the bride and groom’s table. I told her, “It’s only fitting you should get him for YOUR wedding!” Granddaughter Ashley received the monkey for her high school graduation, complete with cap and gown and a rolled up paper diploma. Now it’s Renea’s turn for the graduation ritual. For twenty years the coconut rascal has surprised the daylights out of each recipient, always with enough time between visits that we momentarily forget who’s the next one to be embarrassed. BRL

In the late 1920s, Tim Spicer’s grandfather worked as a fullservice attendant at a gas station in Woodstock, Va. Fast-forward about eighty years down the family line and it’s safe to say Tim’s following closely in his family’s tracks. “I’ve been in the petroleum business for twenty-seven years. It was just kind of a natural fit, ya know,” says Tim who decided to work in distribution. “I got it on both ends of the gene pool. On my father’s side, my great-grandfather was an Esso distributor,” Tim divulges. “My grandfather on my mother’s side, he worked at or owned a gas station his whole life over in Woodstock. So when we were kids, when we were visiting we’d always go over and hang out at the station. It was so different from the hustle and bustle today.” And Tim will do just about anything to keep that world alive, including constructing a second building on his property in Crozet just to display his collection. From the very bottom to the tippity-top of the eighteen-foot high ceilings, it’s fully stocked with your garden variety of gas pumps, cans, jars, jugs and signage. Not to mention two authentic barber chairs, vintage tractor, and general store knickknacks. Tim is the first to admit his hobby is more like a sickness Case in point: the garage next door, which you could kind of call his workshop, also shows off his two immaculate ‘50s era Chevy trucks and some random signage. But mostly importantly, it serves as a constant reminder to Tim. “I started in the garage. When I built the garage I said, ‘I’ll never fill this up.’ And then it probably wasn’t even a year, I couldn’t even walk in there. So that’s when I decided to build the new building just to store the collectables. It definitely takes you back to a different place in time. It’s definitely an escape.” Considering his deep-rooted love for the culture, Tim got a late start in building his collection. Now that he’s on a roll, he’s certainly not wasting any more time. And you can bet he knows all the good honey-holes in the surrounding area, including Dewie Henderson’s house over in Waynesboro. With a collection that’s been growing for the past three decades, it’s not surprising Dewie has frequent visitors like Tim. continued on page 30

“We both got a pretty good collection, but I got Tim started,” brags Dewie. “I got into the gas stuff, I reckon in the early ‘80s. ‘Bout four or five years ago, Tim come by to visit me, and it took off with him.” “I dabbled in it, probably started about fifteen years ago, I got my first sign.” Tim explains. “But about five years ago, I really cranked it up. Seeing the inventory that Dewie had kinda motivated me to go and find more. He was the first person that I visited that had that much stuff.”

Every piece of Tim’s collection has a story. One of the better ones happened by complete accident. “This is in later years, but this is my grandfather’s Sinclair station in Woodstock,” Tim says holding up a framed black and white photo. “It’s a funny story. My wife and I went over to a farmers’ market on Route 11. There was a set of these prints of old different gas stations around the valley. At the time we were renovating the office and I said that would be cool to use to decorate.” “I bought the whole set, had them framed up, and I kept them here while the renovations were going on,” Tim continues. “So, Mom and Dad were out one day and Daddy saw I had ‘em sitting in here behind the chair, and he said, ‘What are those old pictures?’ So he starts looking at them and he says, ‘Well that’s your grandfather Cooley’s gas station. And Mama said, ‘Yeah, So-and-So lived in this house and the bank was next door.’

“So… total coincidence. I didn’t know when I bought it, come to find out that that station was in Woodstock. It was meant to be. Just too cool.” With juju like that, Tim’s gotta feel good about his own place in history. Because at the end of the day, he’s not just collecting vintage items, he’s preserving memories. BRL

GOLF Lately it seems as though moonshine is taking the world by storm. Thanks to shows such like Moonshiners, this illicit nectar has once again captured the eye of both the public and law enforcement alike. One Crozet area eatery is capitalizing on this trend by becoming the first restaurant in the Commonwealth to serve it. This fiery clear spirit is relatively ubiquitous around this area, so it only made sense that Southern Way Cafe owner Jason Fitzgerald would add it to the menu, albeit legally. Jason himself has a family connection to the spirit, as both his grandfather and great grandfather ran stills. “My great grandfather was a moonshiner up in the Piney River area,” Jason said who himself had his first taste of moonshine at a very young age. “Lord, I’d probably go jail for telling you this, but I was probably twelve or thirteen when I first tasted moonshine. My cousins and I found a jar down at our hunting cabin in Nelson County.” It was this family connection that motivated Jason to bring moonshine to the masses, including using his grandfather’s recipe for “apple pie,” a mixture of apple cider, moonshine, and other spices that is mixed by hand when served. “We checked with the ABC people about getting a moonshine liquor license to serve it, and at first they said we couldn’t do it, and I [said] I don’t understand why we can’t do it,” Jason said. The ABC replied that it had never been done before, but Jason persisted saying that just because it had never been done before didn’t mean it couldn’t be done. Ultimately, what was normally a relatively simple 30-day process to get a liquor license turned into a three month ordeal. However, in the end Jason prevailed, and the public has been quite receptive to the shine. “It’s really taken off man, people are digging it,” said Jason, who has the moonshine itself distilled by the Belmont Farms Distillery in Culpeper, though he hopes to also incorporate moonshine from a Nelson County distillery in the future. The Cafe offers a wide variety of flavors of moonshine, including blueberry, blackberry, and the house special, apple pie. In addition, the Cafe incorporates moonshine into its Southern-inspired menu, making such things as corn whiskey collard greens, Vermont maple syrup moonshine desert sauce and several varieties of barbecue sauces. “When I moved to Nelson County, I had friends drive me around just to show me the massive county. From what I’ve heard, it’s supposedly bigger than Rhode Island, but that might be a rumor,” said Jacob Tal, the CEO and co-founder of Tours for Tunes. “They just showed me first-hand all the back roads and beauty and now it’s kind of my job to do the exact same thing for other people coming here for the first time.” Jacob’s Tours for Tunes started almost two years ago as a wine tour business with just Jacob and his van. Now Tours for Tunes, which donates 15% of proceeds to music in schools, has four drivers, they’re working on securing two additional vehicles, and they do tours of all kinds – wine tours, pub crawls, art and history tours: you name it and they’ll drive. Tours for Tunes is growing in popularity both with locals hoping for an official designated driver and out-of-towners looking for a tour guide. Kirsten Melberg of Richmond, VA visited Standardsville with her sister, Alyssa and some of their family and friends for their joint 25th/22nd birthday celebration and they knew they wanted a DD-slash-tourguide but didn’t want anything super fancy. “It was through Google I found Tours for Tunes,” said Kirsten. “I saw that part of the proceeds are donated and I thought that was great and I read about Jacob on the website and it’s just a guy with a van; I love that.” … and yes, it’s just a rumor. Rhode Island is about 2.5 times the size of Nelson County. BRL

ARRINGTON [ nelson county ] STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY courtesy SALENA HITZEMAN

cicadART

Remember the roar of the cicadas you heard last month? A lot of them ended up in Salena Hitzeman’s gutters at Three Rocks Farm in Arrington. “They’re all over the place,” she said. “They’re on the underside of the leaves, the lower most branches of the trees, just covered. The chickens and dogs really like to eat them. Not a problem.” Though she’s had to clean the gutters at least twice, Salena admittedly has a thing for bugs. A picture of a cicada she painted some years ago and available for sale on society6.com – a web site where artists can sell reprints of their work – has been getting some attention. “I think if I’d gone to school and gotten a B.S. instead of a Bachelor of Arts I would have gone into entomology instead of going to art school. It’s important to me to combine the world of science and art. I find they should be more integrated with one another to understand the world. I kind of want that to be my mission as an artist to open up both worlds to each other.” Mission accomplished. BRL

spring/early summer. Well-drained soil on a sun to part shade location is a must, as well as being a lover of this genus as they are typically shortlived in Virginia – lasting only about 3 years. For those wishing to attract hummingbirds and butterflies in moist to wet locations, Lobelia siphilitica or Great Blue Lobelia will not disappoint you. Deep blue, trumpet shaped flowers adorn the spikes of this 3 foot tall plant in summer. This plant typically is around 18 inches at maturity and needs full sun to give both you and your winged critters a show and meal respectively. Aquilegia ‘Winky Blue & White’ is a fantastic addition to any border. With its blooms born on 18 inch stalks, Columbine makes a real show in the late spring border. If left unmulched, this plant will colonize an area and turn 3 plants into a dozen or so in one season. Plant columbine in areas that receive some break from the sun during the day. What house is not complete without a buffer zone or natural habitat loaded with native species? And what buffer zone could be installed without Virginia Bluebells? Ok, the answer is none. Mertensia virginica or Virginia Bluebells has large leafy ‘spinach-like’ foliage with deep blue blooms on them in early spring. Like the columbine, Mertensia also will colonize an area in short time. Plant in shade to part sun. An annual that must have some recognition is Salvia ‘Black and Blue’. Overall a medium sized annual reaching around 14-18 inches in height, this plant has an intense blue bloom that starts off black. We commonly mix this specimen in patio bowls allowing it to contrast with other plants in the orange and yellow color range. Plant in full blazing sun and remove spent bloom spikes to encourage extended bloom periods.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT...

...And it’s $10 BAG DAY at the TREASURE CHEST THRIFT STORE! 9 AM—4 PM

The Color Blue Deep blue – the Holy Grail of the horticulture industry. Plant breeders around the globe incessantly work to cross species in an effort to find a way to produce blue blooming cultivars – the deeper the blue, the more valuable. Choose your genus and you are pretty much guaranteed there is someone, somewhere working on a blue version of it right now. The list of blue blooming plants that I really like in the landscape is short, mostly because there are just so few that are hardy. However, these few, when in bloom are striking and worth adding to your landscape. If you have been reading my columns, you know what is on top of my list – Hydrangea ‘Endless Summer’. If you are still getting the soft pink on Endless Summer, add aluminum sulfate to the soil in early spring. It could take multiple applications, in particular if your soil is naturally alkaline but the reward is well worth it. The best area for them is the eastern side of a structure where they get 4-6 hours of early sun. Just about everyone is familiar with Buddleia or the butterfly bush. However, mention the word Chaste Tree and you will leave many scratching their head – similar to Buddleia in flower, but vastly different growth. Vitex agnus-castus ‘Abbeville Blue’ is a large shrub/ small tree that has deep blue, fragrant flowers born on panicles at the tip of the plant. The foliage is palmate and has a silvery green hue to it. I love to train these into small trees with no limbs under 18 inches or so. Plant in full sun to get your money’s worth. Perhaps the most striking blue in this entire article is Delphinium grandiflorum ‘Summer Nights’. We are not just talking blue now, we are talking electric blue – the color of blue that really almost looks artificial. Growing to around 12-14 inches, the blooms are born on stalks in late

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My mother keeps falling and I worry that she will hurt herself. What can I do? Falls in older people is something to be taken seriously. About 1 in 3 older people will fall each year, although only half talk to their doctor about this. Falling is the leading cause of injury death and the most common cause of hospital admissions due to trauma in this age group. The medical cost of falls in 2010 was about $30 billion. About 25% of people who fall suffer significant injuries. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury. Most fractures in older adults, including over 95% of hip fractures, are due to falls. These injuries can make it difficult for people to get around or live independently. Falling can have a significant effect on people because they develop a fear of falling. This may cause them to limit their activities, reducing mobility and physical fitness, which actually increases the risk of falling. Regular exercise will reduce the

risk of falling. Exercise should focus on increasing leg strength and improving balance. Movement programs, such as Tai Chi, are very good at achieving this. Physical therapy for balance and strengthening may be needed to get you started. Review your medications with your doctor to see if any cause dizziness or drowsiness. Having updated glasses will maximize your vision. You can make your house safer by removing tripping hazards. You can also reduce your risk of falling by keeping your feet on the ground. Standing on an old chair to change a light bulb or climbing up a ladder to clean your gutters significantly increases the likelihood of falling. Be sure to prevent falls by staying strong and working on balance. Use a cane or walker if necessary – they don’t make you look old! And talk to your doctor to see what can be done to reduce your risk of falling.

Office Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30-5pm. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (540)-456-6710

Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center Cycling Safety Tips of the Road Cycling is one of the simple joys of childhood that can continue throughout your lifetime with kids and grandkids. I still remember getting my first bike as a 6 year old. It was white and purple with a banana seat and tall sissy bar in the back. Streamers from the handlebars flew in the air when I sped around the neighborhood. I didn’t have to follow any street rules in my neighborhood; folks knew to drive slowly and watch for the kids in the streets, whether we were on our bikes or playing ball. Times are different and our area presents more of a challenge for safe cycling. This is part two of our series on cycling Last month’s article discussed getting your bike ready to ride. Now, it is important to address riding for safety. Here are some other tips: • Be visible by wearing bright clothing, use a blinking light on the rear of your bike and use reflectors on the front and rear. • Be “Bike Ready”: Check your helmet, tires for air, chain, brakes and
