America’s Favorite Drive Turns 75 Come Celebrate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina

We’re having a year-long party and your whole family is invited! It’s the 75th anniversary of America’s Favorite Drive — the Blue Ridge Parkway. The people of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the visitors who come to experience the area’s beauty, history, art and culture recognize the Parkway’s great impact on our region. There’s no better way to celebrate its legacy than to take the journey, explore what’s new and reach out and grab a Blue Ridge adventure that is all your own.

A Little History Interestingly, this triumph of human ingenuity began in a time of human misery — it was the Great Depression and America was desperate for jobs. One major element of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal was the creation of a workforce to build new public works, including parks. So a crew of eager workers was assembled to build a ribbon of highway stretching along the ridge tops from Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.

Appalachian parkway that would conform to three guidelines: (1) lie easily on the ground; (2) blend harmoniously with the topography; (3) appear as if it had grown out of the soil. Abbott’s plan for the road itself, as well as the adjoining mini parks and recreational sites that he described as “beads on a string,” was a masterpiece indeed. The project began on September 11, 1935. Construction progressed in sections, the last of which, the Linn Cove Viaduct, was completed in 1987.

The vision for the Parkway came largely from the fertile mind of a young landscape architect named Stanley Abbott. Having completed a linear park in New York State, he was chosen to design a Southern

A Road to Adventure As you travel the Blue Ridge Parkway in its 75th anniversary year, you’ll find things largely unchanged. There are still inviting hiking trails, towering

trees, diverse species of wildlife, fascinating cultural points of interest and, of course, those marvelous scenic overlooks with mountain views that steal your breath away. All of these features are in particular abundance in the 10 counties we call the Blue Ridge Mountain Host Region of North Carolina. As you travel our 100 miles of the Parkway, use this book as your guide or go online to ncblueridge.com. Both sources point the way to fascinating side trips that will fill your vacation with unforgettable moments. You can hike through an old-growth forest to a sparkling waterfall. Dine at a sidewalk café in a mountain metropolis. Plunge through frothy waters with only a kayak and a paddle separating you from a cold bath. Enjoy shopping for art

and antiques — many that were hand-crafted by stalwart mountain pioneers. You can sip vintage libations from the region’s vineyards and visit historic sites that bring to life a rich Appalachian past. Your next life-long memory is just over the next ridge.

Pack Up the Car and Go! No doubt about it, this is the year for your Blue Ridge Mountain getaway. With the Parkway as your starting point, all you need is a tank of gas and a spirit of adventure. The friendly mountain folks will happily steer you to the destinations that make this area unique — from clamorous clogging sessions to quiet, secluded pools that are teeming with hungry trout. This year, take America’s Favorite Drive through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains!

he passing of the Blue Ridge Parkway through the mountain metropolis of Asheville is one beautiful coincidence — well not really. In truth, Asheville community leaders of the day campaigned long and hard to bring the picturesque highway to their doorstep. Today the area offers several interesting stops that are right on the Parkway. These include the Folk Art Center (Milepost 382), the North Carolina Arboretum (Milepost 393) and the newly constructed Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center (near Milepost 384) — a “must see” in this anniversary year. Routing the Parkway through Asheville was indeed a fortuitous decision. The mountain metropolis turned out to be the perfect urban complement to the byway’s rustic charm. Wander through the historic downtown and you'll discover interesting restaurants, smiling street entertainers and fascinating shops stocked with fine art, local crafts, antiques and imported items. Conveniently, you don’t have to stop shopping to enjoy the city’s history. The ornate Grove Arcade, a focal point of 1929 Asheville, has been restored to its original glory, now housing locally owned shops and restaurants. You can also visit the boyhood home of author Thomas Wolfe or the beautifully restored

Smith-McDowell House. Or take a grand tour of Biltmore®, America’s largest and perhaps most beautiful residence. Endless opportunities for dining abound with more than 250 independent restaurants, most working hand-in-hand with local growers and artisan food makers to create innovative culinary experiences. You'll find delightful eateries, many with sidewalk tables and live music. In fact, this is a town filled with music, including “Shindig on the Green” the singing/dancing event that takes place on the town square on Saturday nights in the summer. When the sun sets, Asheville really shines — with great dining, theater, brewpubs and music from blues to

bluegrass to symphonic. So by all means, savor the quiet solitude of the Parkway, but when you seek the excitement of a mountain metropolis, Asheville is ready for fun! Just outside of Asheville you’ll discover two charming boroughs: Black Mountain to the east and

Weaverville to the north. The quaint shops, galleries and eateries of these peaceful little towns take visitors back to a time when all you ever needed was right there on Main Street. In many of our small mountain towns, that’s still the case.

Preserving the Parkway and the Mountain Culture The 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway is a joyous celebration — but it’s also a call to action. The yearlong observance should remind us all of the need to protect “America’s Favorite Drive.” “The Parkway of tomorrow will be defined by the extent to which people today are willing to speak out on its behalf and to invest in its future,” says National Park Service representative, Phil Noblitt. “Fortunately, many non-profit groups now work hand-in-hand with the Parkway staff in an effort to preserve and enhance the national treasure that is the Blue Ridge Parkway.”

Step into a Great American Novel You can almost smell the home cooking and hear the conversations of the boardinghouse guests as they amble toward the spacious dining room. Welcome to “Dixieland,” the not-so-fictional boyhood home of literary giant Thomas Wolfe. Though the actual name of Julia Wolfe’s boardinghouse was “Old Kentucky Home,” there’s little doubt that this is the real‑life setting of “Look Homeward, Angel,” Wolfe’s autobiographical masterpiece. Thomas Wolfe was greatly influenced by his hometown and the sprawling Victorian boardinghouse — now beautifully restored in downtown Asheville. All of the rooms appear as they did in Wolfe’s day and many of the furnishings are authentic family possessions. So whether you’re a Wolfe devotee or you just enjoy living history, be sure to stop by the Thomas Wolfe Visitor Center for an audio‑visual presentation. Then follow your guide to Old Kentucky Home and step into a great American novel.

The Orchard at Altapass is a 101‑year‑old apple orchard located right on the Parkway at Milepost 328.3 — but there's a whole lot more going on there than just apple growing. Likely as not, you'll find the hills echoing with the strains of traditional Appalachian music

The vittles at Altapass are just as authentic as the music. In addition to sandwiches and luscious ice cream, the shelves of the orchard shop are stocked with homemade jams, jellies, sauces and apple butter, not to mention Miss Charlotte’s to‑die‑for orchard fudge. Activities include an old‑fashioned hayride around the orchard, complete with breathtaking views and traditional mountain storytelling.

Down in the foothills near Morganton, one family has apple tree roots going back for five generations. Apple Hill Orchard and Cider Mill invites guests to experience life on a working orchard. A highlight of the visit is the orchard tour on the tractor‑drawn wagon. The Country Store is stocked with unique gifts, from jams and jellies to assorted candies, syrups, John Deere memorabilia, and country linens and towels.

ust off the Blue Ridge Parkway (Milepost 393 or 412) Hendersonville is the kind of town you wish you’d grown up in — friendly people, picturesque streets, flowering planter boxes, charming architecture, local restaurants with sidewalk cafes and shops surrounded by mountains and outdoor recreation. You will enjoy this ideal setting for family activities, reunions and group events In the 1820s, the area of Flat Rock became a summer retreat for wealthy Charlestonians seeking cool refuge from South Carolina’s low-country heat. Coined “The Little Charleston of the Mountains,” today the entire district of Flat Rock is included in the National Register of Historic Places. Spend some time in Little Rainbow Row enjoying studios, galleries, inns and restaurants. Take a guided tour of Connemara, the home of America’s poet Carl Sandburg. Visit the goat barn and stroll five miles of trails at this 264‑acre National Historic Site. If waterfalls are your passion, you must experience spectacular Triple Falls of DuPont State Forest, plus High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Hooker Falls and scenic Lake Julia. The many state and national forest

areas have a variety of terrain to explore the great outdoors no matter your level of adventure, from gentle hikes to mountain biking. In the fall, apple farms offer learning activities, hayrides, apple picking and pumpkin patches. The Farmers’ Curb Market downtown and many tailgate/roadside markets throughout the county invite you to sample their delicious farm fresh products year‑round. Located within the historic downtown district, the Henderson County Heritage Museum, Henderson County Mineral and Lapidary Museum and Hands On! A Child’s Gallery offer insight into our area’s history while entertaining and educating. This is small-town America at its classic best.

hould your travels on the Parkway arouse a thirst for a fine Chardonnay, a side trip to a picturesque vineyard is definitely in order. Known as the First Peak of the Blue Ridge, the area is located in the Isothermal Belt, a curious weather phenomenon that creates a year-round mild climate that’s ideally suited for viticulture. So drop by any of several local vineyards. Whether you possess a connoisseur’s palate or just an idle curiosity, there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than sipping the fruit of the vine as the sun sinks slowly into distant mountains of the Blue Ridge. The agreeable climate has prompted talented artists to make their homes here. That’s good news for visitors who thrive on exploring the unique shops of historic Saluda, Tryon and Columbus. Treasure seekers will delight in the fine pottery, porcelain, glasswork, jewelry and paintings that fill the quaint shops and galleries. History buffs will have a field day as well. The Polk County Courthouse in Columbus is one of the oldest still in use in North Carolina. Saluda’s Main Street is a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. For a Civil War-era experience, B&B

guests are invited to completely immerse themselves in history with a stay at the Green River Plantation. The area is also known for its equestrian events, especially the Block House Steeplechase, thrilling crowds every spring since 1946. For breathtaking natural beauty, you can’t beat the dazzling flowers along the path to Pearson’s Falls. If you prefer to take in scenery from the comfort of your automobile, follow the picturesque Pacolet River Byway. It ascends the celebrated Saluda Grade, making the same steep climb that first challenged steam engines in 1878.

Did you know? Parkway construction began in 1935, but had to be temporarily halted at the onset of World War II when the young men of the CCC and WPA were needed for the war effort. At that point, $20 million had been spent, with 170 miles completed and another 160 miles in some stage of construction. The project was resumed as workers returned from the war. BLUE

Pearson’s Falls In the late 19th Century, a young construction engineer was following a picturesque Polk County stream as it cascaded down the slope toward South Carolina. Charles Pearson was looking for passage to build a railroad line up the steep grade, but what he found that day would be much more enduring than any man-made structure. It was a beautiful 90-foot waterfall surrounded by lush mountain fauna. Pearson was so taken with the scene that he bought the land and it stayed in his family until 1931. Today Pearson’s Falls and Glen, owned and maintained by the Tryon Garden Club, is a 268-acre botanical reserve of native forest, spring-fed streams and a quarter-mile hiking path to breathtaking Pearson’s Falls. When you visit the quiet sanctuary, located between Tryon and Saluda, you’ll observe more than 200 species of ferns, flowering plants, algae, mosses and wildflowers. You’re welcome to take a self-guided tour or join one of the many tours offered by master naturalists.

diverse scoring for the splendor of the mountain landscape. Those whose interests run more historical than musical will enjoy downtown Brevard. Perhaps the most enchanting entree to the Land of Falling Waters is from the Parkway at Beech Gap (Milepost 423.2). Here you’ll begin a breathtaking 17-mile journey along Highway 215 to Rosman, near the headwaters of the French Broad River. Built on the right-of-way of two logging railroads, the curving highway defines the boundary between the Shining Rock and Middle Prong wilderness areas. Along the way you’ll see several waterfalls from the road, along with many more that can be accessed by hiking trails. When you get to Rosman, stop by Headwaters Outfitters for a paddling trip on the French Broad River. This is a great area to catch yourself a trout dinner, but be advised: you’ll have to compete with great blue herons and osprey who wake up very early in the morning.

Did you know? At Wagon Road Gap, Milepost 412, you can see Cold Mountain, setting of the Charles Frazier novel. In mid September, you may find yourself among thousands of migrating monarch butterflies. B LU E R IDGE PAR K WAY

fine pottery, glass art, paintings, sculptures, photography, metal work and more. The beauty of such artistry is complimented by the astounding natural beauty of the area including DuPont State Forest and Caesar’s Head State Park. If you take Highway 276 north out of Brevard, the beauty is provided compliments of Pisgah National Forest. Stop by the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education where the aquariums are stocked with a variety of North Carolina’s native fishes. Just up the road you’ll be awed at the sight of one of the Blue Ridge’s most popular falls. Looking Glass Falls, named for the glistening ice that forms along its sides during the winter, is a dazzling sight any time of year. Further up the road is the Cradle of Forestry — home of the nation’s first school of forestry. Bring the family for a walk along the Forest Festival Trail complete with a restored 1915 logging locomotive, or learn more about woodland lore at the Forest Discovery Center Exhibit Hall.

t 75 years old, the Blue Ridge Parkway is still relatively new compared to another renowned mountain passage. Way back in the early 19th Century, livestock drovers herded horses, mules, turkeys and hogs down the Buncombe Turnpike — a busy trade route along the French Broad River. Today you can follow their foot- (and hoof-) steps through the beautiful Land of the Mighty Mountain River. You’ll find that the charming towns that grew up here are fascinating places to visit.

This majestic area is home to more artisans per capita than any other place in the United States. Most will tell you they cherish the seclusion afforded by the inspiring mountains and remote coves. But don’t let that keep you from dropping in for a visit to their shops and studios. These friendly mountain artists are more than happy to chat a while as they create jewelry, stained glass, pottery, wood carvings and traditional mountain instruments. These rugged mountains and valleys also draw outdoor enthusiasts. Sport fishers will find rainbow trout lurking in the clear mountain streams. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders willingly share the trails with deer, foxes, owls and squirrels. And mountain golfers delight in discovering that a ball struck at these heights really does travel farther (or is it just the adrenaline rush caused by the breathtaking scenery?). If all this outdoorsy adventure begins to overwhelm you, take refuge in friendly Burnsville. It’s the host town for a variety of craft and music festivals held each year. It also offers a historic inn, unique shops and tasty eateries.

ne of the most popular stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Museum of North Carolina Minerals at Gillespie Gap (Milepost 330.9). This fascinating facility is the perfect entrée into the land of Gems, Mines and Mountains, whose history is intricately bound to the development of mining. You can learn all about geology and mining history at both the Museum and when you visit the mining exhibits in the Spruce Pine Mining District. At this point you’re ready for a little prospecting of your own. The area has a number of gem mines where the whole family can pursue the elusive sparkle of gold, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. When you’re ready to leave, you may be carrying out a lot more than just beautiful memories! If you’re prospecting for fine craftsmanship, you’re sure to discover some rare gems. Roadside studios are found throughout the county and the artists are only too happy to chat and demonstrate their skills. ust 500 feet off the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most aweinspiring sights you’ll find along America’s Favorite Drive. Linville Falls (Milepost 316.3) boasts the highest volume of any waterfall on the Northern Edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is a delectable opportunity for camera buffs. At this point you’re in the far northwest corner of the Land of Living History. To get to those historical sights, you’ll want to head southeast — probably via Highway 181, although, you could strike out through the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. Just a warning: it’s not for tenderfeet. Either way, if you follow the river far enough you’ll be rewarded with the sight of 6,400-acre Lake James, an expansive playground offering fishing, boating, skiing and camping.

But let’s get back to history. First stop is Morganton, where the Old Burke County Courthouse lies smack dab in the middle of the town’s National Register District. Today the courthouse is the home of the Heritage Museum, with fascinating exhibits that bring frontier history to life. Head east on I-40 and you’ll enter Valdese, whose history is unique in the state. The quaint town’s ancestors came here from Italy in 1893 to build new lives in the foothills of North Carolina. While you’re here you’ll want to tour the Waldensian Heritage Museum and attend the outdoor drama that tells the tale of their amazing journey, “From This Day Forward.” The Land of Living History is also known for great shopping. Stop by any of the towns’ charming stores for antiques, collectibles and Blue Ridge Mountain handmade crafts. And what’s the perfect way to end your day? Try a tour and wine tasting at one of two local wineries. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Did you know? The Parkway project was once derided by a Michigan congressman as “...the most ridiculous undertaking that has ever been presented to the Congress of the United States.” That statement would be roundly disputed by the more than 600 million visitors who have enjoyed the byway since its creation. Today efforts continue to provide better protection for Parkway land and views. BLUE

Linville Caverns and Grandfather Mountain Deep beneath Humpback Mountain, slow moving ground water sculpted a masterpiece in stone. This creation of underground labyrinths and passages are decorated with new deposits of minerals forming elegant shapes, textures and a spectrum of color. The cavern was discovered after fish were observed swimming out of the mountain. Since then, extensive research continues to try and understand the history, geology and biology of Linville Caverns. Towering 5,946 feet above northwest North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain is operated as a scenic travel attraction and is one of the world’s most environmentally diverse nature preserves. With 360° views of spectacular mountain ridge retreating to the horizon, you’re certain to discover your own perfect mountain adventure. Grandfather Mountain

or mountain folks living in secluded coves along the Parkway, the railroad was a vital link to the outside world. One place to make that connection was at Old Fort’s train station in the home of Singing Rails and Whistle‑Stops. Today you can drive to Old Fort from the Curtis Creek Recreation Area on the Parkway, close to Milepost 350. The renovated station now houses exhibits highlighting railroad history of the area. Just a short walk away, the Mountain Gateway Museum interprets pioneer lore. For more authentic mountain culture, drop by downtown Old Fort any Friday evening as local musicians play the tunes they learned at Granddaddy’s knee. Further down the line, the Marion Depot, built in the 1860s, is the oldest surviving depot on the western rail line and the home of Marion’s Bluegrass Music Jam. Nearby, in the Pleasant Gardens community, you can visit the beautifully preserved Carson House, as well as the home of Joseph McDowell, a prominent leader during the Revolutionary War. The Home of Singing Rails and Whistle-Stops stretches from the foothills to the high mountains, touching the Parkway at the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area (Milepost 316.3) where serious hikers can challenge the rugged backcountry. For

those who prefer a less strenuous mountain experience, we suggest the great shopping and mountain views at Little Switzerland (Milepost 334). Or bring the whole family for apple picking, hayrides and lively music at the old Orchard at Altapass, right on the Parkway at Milepost 328.3. The points of interest in this vast area are as diverse as the terrain. As you travel you’ll discover skyblue lakes, roaring waterfalls, underground caverns and fascinating gem mines. And all along the way there are shops and studios where skilled artists practice the crafts handed down from generation to generation.

From Cottage Industry to R enowned School In 1920, a remarkable young woman named Lucy Morgan came to the Blue Ridge to be a teacher at the Appalachian School near Penland, North Carolina. Captivated by the creative spirit of the mountain people, she learned to be a weaver and later began the Penland Weavers, a cottage industry which provided local women with looms and materials and then marketed their hand-woven goods. Within

a few years, Morgan added other crafts and began to raise funds and construct buildings. Today, the Penland School of Crafts is a national center for craft education, dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Each year the school offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles,

and wood. It also sponsors artists’ residencies, community education programs, and a craft gallery that features the work of affiliated artists. The Penland School craft gallery is a great place to shop for gifts, add to your craft collection, or learn about contemporary craft. And while you’re in the Land of Gems, Mines and Mountains, be sure to visit the dozens of working studios, as well as the school’s resident artist studios.
