elcome to NC’s Blue Ridge Mountains! Like many of you, I remember with utter delight family trips from my own childhood to this special place. My mother pointing out every new peak with enthusiasm, “Look children!” Camping in Pisgah and learning how to pop corn over the campfire. Holding my breath through tunnels on the Parkway. Square dancing in the barn. Learning to play a few guitar chords after supper. Waterfalls, lakes, canoes. Horses, apples, curb markets and quilts. All these memories are stitched together in my heart and mind. And now — what a pleasure to share all of this with my own children! Truly — the legacy and culture of these mountains spans generations — for my family and the many others who have fallen in love with this place. Enjoy it. Make the most of it. And remember — you are planting your own seeds for memories of the future. Thank you for picking up this guide — we hope it opens many doors to unforgettable experiences!

estern North Carolina is a study in contrasts. On a Friday night, you can check out a lively drum circle in Asheville’s Pritchard Park and then drive a few minutes to watch for falling stars from a Blue Ridge Parkway overlook. Lose yourself in the luxury of Biltmore, then visit the pioneer farmstead of former governor Zebulon Vance. Take a leisurely stroll among the 434-acre North Carolina Arboretum, or bike one of the trails that meander through the nearly 6,000 acres of Bent Creek Experimental Forest. Asheville has been hailed as a top travel destination by media outlets as diverse as Good Morning America, Outside Magazine, AmericanStyle and Fodors.com. It’s the perfect place for urban adventures, offering art galleries, fashion boutiques and esteemed music venues. Take a stroll down Main Street in Weaverville or Black Mountain, where life moves at an easier pace while still providing incredible dining, shopping and entertainment. Then get in touch with nature among the trails, waters and vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. No matter the pace you’re seeking, you’re sure to find your groove right here.

hen Asheville was first crowned Beer City USA in an Examiner poll in 2009, it was more than just a sign that people here appreciate a good brew; it was proof of the region’s growing prominence as a producer of fine craft beers. Asheville has taken this honor three more times, which should be no surprise considering it has more microbreweries per capita than any other city. For more information:

T

he rolling farmland of Henderson County is home to nearly 5,000 acres of apple orchards. Many of these are open to the public for part or all of the year, giving you the chance to buy fresh produce and even pick your own apples in late summer and early fall. On Labor Day weekend, the North Carolina Apple Festival features a street fair, entertainment, crafts and, of course, lots of apples. But the fun here isn’t limited to harvest season. The tree-lined streets of Hendersonville bustle with shops and sidewalk cafés. To the south is historic Flat Rock, where the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site and other locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places can be found. Flat Rock Playhouse, the state theatre of North Carolina, stages modern and classic productions at its home theatre and its venue in downtown Hendersonville. For an outdoor excursion, check out the 10,000-acre DuPont State Forest, which provides the ideal location for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, swimming or just soaking in the scenery. Or set off on a tubing trip from North Mills River Recreational Area in Pisgah National Forest. This place will curb your craving for adventure.

of apple orchards, which produce 65 percent of the state’s apple crop. This

industry has been thriving since the 1700s, and today it rakes in more than $22 million each year. Many of the farms are open to the public for part or all of the year, late summer and early fall. Some of the orchards even offer hay rides, corn mazes, and farm animals to pet and feed. Take a leisurely drive down any country road and you're guaranteed to pass roadside stands selling fresh vegetables and fruits, including — of course — apples. You're also likely to find delectable homemade apple pies, apple butter, apple fritters and more. Apples are such a vital part of the county’s heritage that each Labor Day weekend, downtown Hendersonville hosts the North Carolina Apple Festival. Main Street is blocked off so it can be lined with stands selling apples, baked goods, crafts and more. There are children's activities, live music, an apple recipe contest and a parade on Labor Day, all celebrating the big part this sweet fruit plays in the local economy.

he area encompassing Saluda, Tryon and Columbus ushers the eastern ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains into North Carolina, earning it the nickname "The First Peak of the Blue Ridge." The unique topography and weather patterns create an isothermal belt that gives some areas a milder climate than neighboring communities, keeping things a little warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer along the base of the mountains. Several vineyards have taken root here, using the longer growing season to craft exceptional wines. Visit any of them for a tour or tasting and take a sweet reminder of the mountains home. The aforementioned towns are also home to galleries and shops featuring fine crafts by local artists. Barbecue fans will want to check out the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival in June. Chefs from throughout the Southeast present their tastiest creations for judging, with the food complemented by music, crafts, rides, games and more, giving you a true taste of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

he lush mountains of Transylvania County — including Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Recreational Forest and Gorges State Park — are home to more than 250 waterfalls, providing a stunning backdrop for adventures both urban and rural. Bike Magazine declared this “America’s best-kept secret” in its January/February 2012 issue. Fly-fishing fans will discover some of the top waters in the country, and Rosman serves as the ideal base for renting a canoe and catching a trout dinner at the headwaters of the French Broad River. In addition, hiking aficionados can trek more than 1,000 miles of trails, while the campgrounds and children’s summer camps are among the best in the nation. Brevard was recently named one of the “coolest small towns in America” by readers of Budget Travel. This vibrant town has several galleries and shops featuring fine arts and crafts, while the nationally acclaimed Brevard Music Center and Porter Center of Brevard College draw names such as YoYo Ma and the Steep Canyon Rangers. For regional music, check out the White Squirrel Festival and the Mountain Song Festival. Whether you’re looking to get away from it all or immerse yourself in it, you’ve come to the right place.

stablished by Congress and the President in 2003, the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area honors the character, culture and natural beauty of western North Carolina. The organization has its headquarters as the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center, which features a gift shop, exhibits, kiosks and a 22-foot interactive map of the entire parkway. he beautiful French Broad River — the third oldest in the world — flows north through this region, serving as a common vein among several fascinating small towns. Among them is Marshall, which has a lot of personality packed into its 3.8 square miles. Downtown is home to restaurants, boutiques and art galleries, with regular events throughout the year highlighting music, crafts and more. For more art, check out nearby Mars Hill, home to the summerstock Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. Follow the French Broad to the northwest and you’ll discover Hot Springs, a popular stop for hikers along the Appalachian Trail, which runs right through town. Locals and visitors alike appreciate the natural mineral spring that gives the town its name. Hike a section of the famed trail, or rent a canoe or kayak for an outing on the river. Additional adventures nearby include skiing at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort, a hike at Max Patch (with its magnificent 360-degree views), and horseback riding at one of several stables, all of which allow you to soak in the beauty of Mother Nature.

ocated at the confluence of the French Broad River and Spring Creek, the small town of Hot Springs is home to the only known natural hot spring in North Carolina and one of only a few in the Southeast. Long before the pioneers settled here, the Cherokee believed these waters — which maintain a temperature of more than 100 degrees year round — to be healing for both body and spirit. The 12 outdoor mineral baths at Hot Springs Resort and Spa provide the perfect way to relax after a day of hiking, bicycling, fishing or horseback riding. Nearby, more of Mother Nature’s handiwork is on display at Roan Mountain, where you’ll find captivating panoramic views of North Carolina and Tennessee. Roan Mountain is also home to the world’s largest natural rhododendron garden, honored at its peak each June with the NC Rhododendron Festival, which features a pageant, car show and street fair with entertainment, food vendors, and — naturally — arts and crafts.

hile many people describe western North Carolina as heavenly, Mt. Mitchell State Park is a place where you feel you really can reach out and touch the sky. At 6,684 feet, this is the highest point east of the Mississippi, and on many days low-lying clouds gently brush the land. But when the clouds part, the view is something to behold. Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 355.4, this 1,946-acre park offers hiking, picnicking and — from May through October — an exhibit hall, concession stand and restaurant. No matter what time of year you visit, be sure to bring a jacket, as the high elevation means the temperature can be up to 30 degrees cooler than Asheville and other nearby towns. ith several wineries and one of the region’s most popular breweries located within its boundaries, Burke County offers a true taste of what makes western North Carolina so spectacular: the spirit of entrepreneurship blended with long-held traditions. Sample locally produced wine or beer, then hit downtown Morganton for shopping, dining and fabulous art galleries. The town’s historic district includes the Burke County History Museum — one of the nicest, most informative museums in the region. Nearby, Valdese features several historic structures that give a glimpse of the lives of the Waldensian — Italian immigrants that settled here in the late 1800s. For six weeks in July-August, the outdoor drama From This Day Forward tells the story of the persecuted people who traveled from Italy and settled Valdese. Enjoy world-class bluegrass at the Old Rock School. The spectacular Linville Gorge presents hikes of moderate and strenuous ratings. But, the views are worth it! On the lighter end is the one-mile trek to the summit of Table Rock. Lake James State Park, a 6,510-acre lake with more than 150 miles of shoreline, is the ultimate destination for swimming, boating, water skiing and other water-centric activities. Or hike along the many trails and imagine yourself as one of the explorers who first discovered this magical land.

ust east down the mountain from Asheville, the towns of Marion and Old Fort were the last stop for trains before they began their climb up the grade. Today, the original train station in Old Fort serves as a railroad museum, and the depot in Marion hosts a weekly, Thursday night Bluegrass Jam. Stroll the streets of the town's historic district visiting museums, galleries, shops and restaurants. Lake James' two state parks are ideal destinations for boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, bicycling and other adventures. Additionally, the dramatic changes in elevation make for dazzling waterfalls to explore throughout the area, such as Catawba Falls, with its 340-foot cascade and an upper plunge of 70 feet. Linville Falls, with its three-tiered, 90-foot drop, boasts the highest volume of any waterfall in the area. Tours of Linville Caverns, the only show caverns in the state, offer a spectacular look inside the Blue Ridge Mountains. Other points of interest include gold and gem mines, the town of Little Switzerland and the Orchard at Altapass, a 105-year-old orchard, where you can pick your own apples, take a hayride and listen and dance to live mountain music.

he dramatic peaks and rolling valleys of western North Carolina have served as the backdrop for many a big-budget picture. For example, Dirty Dancing was filmed partially at Lake Lure, which holds a festival themed around the movie each summer. The town also features a lakeside beach, a perfect launching point for swimming, waterskiing or simply sunning in the fresh mountain air. The dramatic finale of Last of the Mohicans was filmed at Chimney Rock State Park. Walk to the top of the latter’s namesake spire for a breathtaking view of the surrounding land, then hike the trails throughout this beautiful wooded park. Beyond a glimpse at Hollywood locales, the entire Hickory Nut Gorge area offers something for visitors of any age. KidSenses Children’s Museum has exhibits, programs and workshops for the younger set, while Bennett Classics Antique Car Museum is a popular destination for automobile enthusiasts. The towns of Rutherfordton, Forest City and Spindale all offer charming shops and down-home restaurants. The only downside to having so many entertainment options? Finding a way to fit in everything you want to do.
