Dedication from Mr. William Ramsey

A Legend, A Baron

Since coming here as a freshman in 1979, I have been a Blue Ridge School Baron. I was a four year boy graduating in 1983. The positive impact that this school had on me as a student was absolutely life changing in just about every way. The combination of the BRS mission, and its dedicated and caring teachers, coaches, and administrators, put into place as a result of the vision and outstanding leadership of Hatcher Williams, the new school’s 1st headmaster, proved to be a perfect fit for me and hundreds of other boys as well. I did very well in the classroom and in several sports. I was elected as a prefect my senior year, and was accepted to the college of my choice. I then worked at BRS as a summer school counselor and teacher during my college years, and that was when I decided to pursue a career as a teacher. I became a full time employee in 1990. During my 25 year career it has been my honor to have served the school in numerous positions including: history teacher, coach, dorm parent, summer school director, dean of students, assistant athletic director, summer program coordinator and athletic director. I can’t say that I have enjoyed every minute of my work here at BRS, or that my jobs have not come without many challenges; however, I can unequivocally say that the rewards that I have experienced through my work with so many young men over all these years have more than made up for the long hours, late nights, and tough situations. Teaching young men at Blue Ridge School has been my life’s work, and I have no regrets. My wife and I came here as a young married couple, and we soon had two wonderful children, Emily and Cal, who were born and raised here on campus. No matter what the future holds for the four of us, my family will always consider Blue Ridge School to have been our original home. I appreciate all that the school has done for me. I am especially thankful for the many special people, friends and mentors that I have met and worked with during my 35 years as a Baron. I have heard many people say that I will always bleed Baron Blue, and I am quite certain that they are correct. GO BARONS

A WORD FROM OUR HEADMASTER Mr. Trip Darrin School Headmaster Dear Blue Ridge Barons, What a year! A basketball state championship and one of the best years for the Ridge Rowdies, multiple awesome drama and musical performances, groundbreaking for the Baron Athletic Complex, countless academic achievements, the Food Pantry out of Gibson Chapel, service learning class trips, and daily examples of a school filled with great guys being stand-up young men of character. Not to mention a big rebound year for the golf team! I had to mention that. As I write this, I realize I have this feeling every year at this time. I’m struck by how fast the year has passed and in shock that a campus buzzing with constant activity will be all too quiet in just two weeks. Yes, I’m exhausted – as are all students and teachers -- yet I’m not in the least bit ready for the year to be over. I’m especially proud of this year’s seniors. The fouryear boys in this class were freshmen when I was first named as Head of this great school so I feel a special connection with these young men. We’ve been through a lot together, and I’ve witnessed truly impressive growth. This class is and will be a source of pride for Blue Ridge School – heading to college and the world at large to search for success and to make a positive difference in their communities. With big congratulations to seniors and every Blue Ridge student, thank you for making many sacrifices and for working hard to meet the high bar that’s set for you at this school. I know it’s not easy, but it’s a worthy endeavor. I’ll remember 2014-2015 as a great year for BRS – because you were part of it. Go Barons! 2

Mr. Markley Anderson Q: What is the furthest distance you have ever biked? And how do you use the bathroom on the bike rides? A: 2800 miles. You stop and pee like normal or hold it. If you are really desperate and a win is in the balance, neck and neck, pee on yourself. That would be an incredibly extreme situation though.

Mr. Peter Atkinson Q: What was the most fun part of being in a Doors cover band? A: The funnest part would have to be knowing someone that could actually play the Calliope Organ. ( I know it should be “most fun”, but this is ROCK'N'ROLL!)

Mr. Jon Baker Q: How many book have you ever read? A: I have read 11,578 books as of my November 12 response. Please add 5 books per week for each week after November 12. Though you should add six books for weeks we are out of school, since I have more time to read. ... Seriously, I have no idea how many books I've read, so lets say more than a few. 49

Mr. Matthew Bennet Q: What is your favorite thing in your daily life? A: Discussing Quantum Mechanics with Mr. Welty over a cup of Maxwell House dark roast.

Mr. Peter Bonds Q: Why do you like to vote? A: For years I have been organizing write-in campaigns to get Jim Niederberger elected as the Soil and Water Commissioner of Greene County. So far I have been unsuccessful, but 2015 might be the year. I also like the sticker they give you.

Mr. James Bourland

Q: What is your favorite experiment in your science class?

A: I guess it would have to be freezing candy in Liquid Nitrogen and then eating it. It is also fun to get shocked by the 50,000 volts of the Van der Graff Generator. Everyone likes to watch the hydrogen gas explode when elemental Sodium is dropped into Water. What could be better than watching model rockets fly 1.6 km into the sky?

Mr. Tony Brown Q: Best mustache you have ever seen at BRS ? Also what is your favorite type of mustache? A: Haven't seen many unique mustaches around here and I don't really like any. I guess cowboys look cool in them. I read somewhere that some leader made his generals have mustaches because it instilled more respect for those fighting under him.

Mr.Vinton Bruton Q: Which gun would you buy for hunting if you have 2000 dollars budget? A: Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather Stainless Steel in 30-06 ($1300) with a Leupold VX•R scope with illuminated reticle ($689).

Mr. Patrick Curtin Q: What was it like balancing your time in college between lacrosse and schoolwork? A: It was hard! Both were full time jobs, so balancing that and maintaining a social life was tough. My experience in high school helped, which made it easier. But I felt I could only give my attention to two of those things. So after winning the Ivy League championship Freshman year at Brown, I decided to focus on being a student full time. I think I made the right choice.

Mr. Daniel Dunsmore

Q: Why did you choose be a basketball coach? A: I played basketball in high school and was on an intramural basketball team in college. I’ve always loved the game. I now follow college basketball. I’ve been lucky to live in or near several college basketball towns – Knoxville, TN; Atlanta, GA; Durham, NC; and now Charlottesville, VA. I pull for both the SEC and ACC. Coaching basketball at Blue Ridge keeps my head in the game. I enjoy helping younger players develop their basic skills. More importantly, I hope they enjoy practices and games. Once the fun is gone, what’s the point?

Mr. Paul Fehlner Q: Do you think that you are the best wrestler in Blue Ridge? A: Absolutely, and the flying drop kick from the corner turn buckle has to be my favorite move.

Mr. Timothy Gillett Q: Why do you teach ELL? A: I teach ELL mainly because I enjoy working with international students and the different perspectives that they bring to the classroom. There is always something that I can learn about language and culture from international students. I believe that being open to ideas from other cultures brings the world closer together by fostering understanding, tolerance, and empathy; these are essential skills in the modern world and they provide us the prowess to inch ever closer to an ideal world full of peace.

Mr. William Hare What are the similarities between the navy and BRS? Structure, education, all male, team work, long hours, community living, comradery, courage, honor, pride, charity, mission orientated, “can do, will do” spirit

Mr. Hans Hermanson Q: If you had three wishes from a genie, what would they be? A: If I had three wishes they would be for the following. 1) That my family would go to heaven 2) I would be granted knowledge 3) I could see the face of God just once

Mr. John Hetzel Q: Why do you like lacrosse? A: No one knows exactly where or when lacrosse was originated but the first players were Native Americans who believed the sport was a gift from the Creator. They gave the game its diverse tradition of songs, rituals, and folklore that linked man to man, society to society, and man to the natural world around him. Lacrosse is more than just a sport, it is living history that has enriched the lives of generations of players and supporters, from its roots in Native American society and beyond to players around the world today.

Mr. Jerry Jared Q: Why do you run all time? A: I run for several reasons. I run because it feels good while I am doing it and when I am done. I like the competitive side of the sport and enjoy seeing if I can run a certain time. I really enjoy being out in woods on the trails. I enjoy doing it alone and with others.

Mr. Jerry King Q: Which play you have directed do you like the most? A: I really enjoyed directing the show “Urinetown” two years ago. The script was clever, funny, profound and quirky. The satire was sharp and the songs catchy. And the end had a gut-punch twist.

Mrs. Marcia Kozloski Q: How long have you been in United States? What do you like most about the U.S.? A: I have been in the United States for about 30 years. I love this country. It is a country of opportunities and freedom. Here I started my family, the job that I love, and found many good friends. I plan to stay in this country for the rest of my life. 55

Mr. Cade Lemcke Q: Why do you love basketball so much? A: The game of basketball has made me who I am today as a husband, father, teacher and coach. From the first time I started playing the game (age 4), I began learning about discipline, hard work, team spirit, poise, persistence and delayed gratification. All of these virtues carried over (and continue to carry over) into all aspects of my life. My only hope is that I can give back to the game of basketball (players, fellow coaches, fans) in a way that shows my appreciation for all it has given to me.

Ms. Jo McKeown Q: What is the most funny question that a student had asked you? A: The most funny question students often ask is, “Are we doing anything today?”

Dr. Kevin Miller Q: Do you feel any difference when you face students as a mister and as a doctor? A: No, there's no difference to me. I got the doctoral degree because it taught me more about how kids learn, which is interesting to me in any case. Besides, when I was here in the 1990's and was supposed to be called Mr. Miller, the kids just called me “Miller”, and I'm still known as “Miller' to a whole generation of my favorite BRS boys. 56

Mr. Don Mousted Q: Are there similarities between teaching and acting? How do they relate? A: Yes and no! As an actor, I had to memorize everything I was going to say and then make it part of the character I was going to play. I also had to dress in a specific costume, speak in a dialect, and be aware of the situation on stage in case something went wrong; I guess that last point relates to the classroom. As a teacher I use my drama training and experience in presenting material in an interesting or even dramatic way. I don't have to memorize information completely but I do need to know it well enough to think on my feet when dealing with unexpected questions or comments. There are many similarities between teaching and acting, which is why I think I like teaching so much.

Mr. James Niederberger Q: Where did you first learn how to play the piano and Organ? A: I started piano in the first grade, and then studied the organ as well as piano at the prep school that I attended.

Mr. Bryan Puckett Q: Do you think you are the best best basketball player among all of the faculty? A: I assure you that I am the best basketball player amongst all of the teachers that are hall parents on upper east. Other than that bold claim I will say that I feel like I am comfortable in the top ten overall!

Mr. William Ramsey

Q: Which year's basketball team you have coached do you think is the best?

A: From 1999 through 2001 we won back to back Prep League and State Championships with many of the same players. The 19992000 Team was 26-5 and the 2000-2001 Team was 27-7 and our schedule was much more difficult that year than the year before. Also our 2010-2011 Team was VIC Champion, State Runner Up and had the Best Record in School History 26-2, was ranked as High as 5th Nationally and set school record for by winning 22 consecutive games before loosing in the last regular season game of the season. But we came up short in the State Finals. I loved all three of those teams and many others as well.

Mr. Joseph Reilly Q: Do you think you will discover unobtainium? A: Element hunting just isn't the same anymore. Back in my day, you could take a holiday to Formosa and discover two new elements in your pajamas simply by distilling vitreous humor with the spirit of elderflower! Now you need a finicky cyclotron, 20 milligrams of plutonium-242, and and the blessing of Vladimir Putin himself to create one single new atom that has a half-life of seconds! While I long to land on the shores of the proverbial “Island of Stability”, I leave this task for researchers with more patience and better funding.

Mr. Gabriel A. Rhea Q: Why did you come back to Blue Ridge to teach? A: After studying in an all male environment for 6 years, I firmly believe in the advantages it gives young men. I also missed the food, and I will not rest until I catch the “citation” bass Jamie Miller “apparently” caught in the front lake.

Ms. Krystle Roach Q: Which trip you have planned for students do you think is the best trip? A: Kings Dominion and Jumpology. Kings Dominion has always been a lot of fun; however, it seems like the newest and most sought after trip is Jumpology in Richmond.

Mr. Stephen Swanger Q: Which professional soccer club do you like the most? A: I can't say that I have one favorite team exactly. However, I am a huge fan of Major League Soccer and enjoy the story of how the sport is growing in the american psyche, how the quality of play in the league has improved, and how the league has developed its fan base. So, I support the MLS. 59

Mr. Mike Vinson Q: Why can you play so many musical instruments? A: I've always been interested in all types of music, along with different stringed instruments. Started out learning the guitar in middle school, switched to bass and later bass guitar in most of my working bands through the years. learned the mandolin in college, after an unsuccessful attempt at violin. I was pretty terrible!! Took some piano in college, also. Took an interest in the lap and hammered dulcimers after retiring from playing full time.

Mr. David Welty

Q: Where are your Halloween costume ideas come from? A: My halloween costume ideas come from a cave deep underground, far out in the ocean, underwater, in outer space. It smells of fine cheese and drakkar noir. A talking gummy bear lives there and if I defeat him in a game of Peruvian flute hockey, he lets me use his wifi to search the internet for ideas.

Ms. Carrie Woods Q: what college would you recommend the students of BRS to go to? A: The college that fits the Best! She says “every college is good: just not every college is good for you” Go visit colleges and see what best fits for you and see what college feels like home. 60

Mr. Cory Woods Q: What specifically interest you about nature? A: I appreciate the challenge - to push one beyond a certain comfort level or require a trust in something beyond the individual; something bigger, stronger, or even more significant. But, an outdoor activity doesn't have to be extreme or risky to be valuable - there is a value in simply being familiar and comfortable in your natural surroundings (they probably effect our day-to-day life more than we realize).

Ms. Hairuo Yi Q: What is the difference between learning English and learning Chinese? A: Learning English is a lot harder than learning Chinese.

Mr. John Young IV Q: Do you think you can beat any BRS lacrosse player one on one?

A: At seventy years of age, I doubt it! Too old, too slow, and too fragile. However, I can knock them up side their heads with my stick real hard and make them cry! 61

Q; Whats your favorite musical? A: My favorite musical is Les Miserables. I love the portrayal of the themes of forgiveness, mercy and grace woven throughout the entire story, but which are particularly powerfully demonstrated through the relationship between the two protagonists, Jean Valjean and Javert. The music never grows old or too familiar for me.

Q; What is like being a Blue Ridge School nurse? A: I love being a nurse at the Blue Ridge School. I get to not only use my nursing skills here but my mothering skills as well. This job uses a combination of both and I really like that. School nursing is very different from hospital nursing. Working in a hospital, I was never alone. So, school nurses need to have a lot of confidence. They have to have confidence in their abilities . So, if there is an emergency, the school nurse is the person to whom everyone looks, to know what to do. That can be scary sometimes! However, it is a very rewarding job because I am trained to help people when they are sick or injured. When you are able to help people during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

The varsity golf team had a strong rebound year, finishing with 7 wins and 2 losses and placing third in the VIC Tournament. Three BRS golfers, Pedro Arrangoiz, Rob Lane, and Logan Parish earned 2nd-team All-Conference honors from the VIC. Pedro and Rob also qualified as individuals for the State Championship Tournament on Monday, May 18th.This year’s team was young, featuring among the starting six a junior and three sophomores. We were also roadtested, completing the successful campaign without a single match played at home (all three planned home matches were rained out). We were also Team UN – in one match, six countries were represented within the starting lineup. At the BRS Spring Sports Awards ceremony, Logan Parish was named Most Improved Player after reducing his scoring average by 12 strokes to finish strong in wins over Miller and Fishburne. Pedro Arrangoiz, who was Mr. Consistent all year scoring in the 40’s playing the #1 slot in every match, was named Most Valuable Player. And 3-year varsity golfer and Captain, Eric Zeng, the anchor and clearcut leader of the team, was given the Coaches’ Award. We’ll miss seniors Eric Zeng, Chul Woo Park, Jacob Morgan, and Palmer Hicks. Take your sticks with you to college, Gentlemen!!! Coach Darrin

The spring mountain bike season was awesome. The whole team participated in the Virginia High School Mountain race series did very well. Each racer showed great improvement. Going into the state championship which we host, the team standing had BRS in second place in JV and 6 out of 13 teams in the overall category. Colin Cahill was the lone Varsity rider sitting in 14th place in his 8th season racing with the big boys. The team also completed some much needed trail work on campus. Built a skinny on the lower loop for the brave. Looking forward to next season! 109

BLUE AND The Blue and White games is an annual event of games to test the two teams ability to work together. They have to use their smarts, strength, and athletic ability to work as a team to compete against each other to eventually win the battle. This year the White team won by winning two out of the three events, but like every year it was a close contest.
