Gabriel Metsu A virtuoso Leiden painter in seventeenth century Amsterdam By Pieter Roelofs Curator of 17th century Dutch painting, Rijksmuseum

8 I Rush on Amsterdam

Winter 2010 - 2011

Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667) painted scenes of everyday life in the Golden Age with an exceptional feel for detail and materials and left us with a wonderful image of Dutch people, their costumes and activities in the seventeenth century: a young man writing a love letter, a woman washing her hands, an old drinker raising his glass.

The

Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is now dedicating an exhibition to this prominent genre painter, who produced an impressive body of work despite his relatively short life. Today, over 130 of his paintings have been identified, including a number of works that are considered to be amongst the best paintings created in the Golden Age, such as 'The Sick Child' (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) and the companion pieces 'Man Writing a Letter' and 'Woman Reading a Letter' (National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin).

A Virtuoso in Leiden As the only son of the painter Jacques Metsu, who died some eight months before his birth, Gabriel Metsu started his career at a young age in his birthplace of Leiden. He took his first steps as an artist from the home he shared with his mother, Jacquemijntje Garniers, a midwife, and her fourth husband, the shipmaster Cornelis Gerritsz Bontecraey, on the west side of the old De Mare river arm. He was 14 or 15 when he was first mentioned as a painter in Leiden-related documents in 1644. Four years later, Metsu paid his first annual contribution to the newly established Guild of Saint Luke.

It is uncertain who taught Metsu how to paint. He probably received his initial training from the Leiden silversmith Claes Pietersz de Grebber, and Grebber's son Anthonie may have introduced the young Metsu to the basic principles of painting. Based on his early paintings, it can be assumed that Metsu then stayed in Utrecht for some time, where he familiarized himself with the work of Nicolaus Knüpfer, Jan Baptist Weenix and Maerten Stoop. The influence that these artists had on him is clearly evident in the paintings he produced in and around 1650. Metsu initially produced monumental Biblical depictions and several farcical scenes, such as 'The Dismissal of Hagar' (Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden) and 'Twelfth Night' (Alte Pinakothek, Munich). The latter of these works catches the eye because of its humorous overtones. It depicts the so-called ‘bean feast’, a popular old Dutch custom that was traditionally celebrated at Epiphany in the first week of January. In this painting, an old man who has found a bean hidden in his meal has been crowned king. As a ‘reward’, he is expected to gulp down the contents of his flute glass, with three generations of his family looking on. The composition of

the depiction and his rendering of jocular types of individual make the scene unmistakably reminiscent of the households painted by Jan Steen, one of Metsu’s famous fellow guild members in Leiden. Metsu’s early works often depict striking, colorful accents against a slightly dark, monochrome background, painted in quite coarse brush strokes. These relatively large paintings were bought by devotees in the area local to the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke and by acquaintances of the Metsu family, such as the physician Gerard van Hoogeveen, the goldsmith Jan Jansz van Griecken and the wool merchant Michiel van Peene. Metsu also painted portraits from a young age. A document in the Leiden archives expressively describes how the painter, then about 20 years old, immortalized his fellow townsman Nicolaes de Roy in about 1649. Although the whereabouts of the portrait in question are no longer known, it is clear that Metsu received not just money for his work in those days, but was sometimes also paid in kind: in this specific case, he received painting supplies.

Interpreter of the ‘Leiden genre’ in Amsterdam Looking for a bigger market for his paintings, Metsu

Winter 2010 - 2011

moved to Amsterdam, probably in 1654. At the age of 25, being an adult under 17th century Dutch law, he was able to claim his share in the inheritance left by his father and his mother, who had now also died. He set up a new studio in a small property in the old center of Amsterdam: on Prinsengracht, in the alleyway also accommodating the De Gecroonde Hoet brewery, between current house numbers 351 and 353. Unlike Leiden, Amsterdam had a strong tradition of history painters, including Rembrandt and his pupils. As a result, it is no surprise that Metsu chose not to go up against the tough competition in the art market and moved away from historic scenes and started to specialize in a type of painting that was not customary in Amsterdam at all. He is regarded as the most important interpreter of the ‘Leiden’ genre painting in Amsterdam and was able to gain a position for himself in the market with his knowledge of recent developments within genre painting in the Dutch Republic. Initially, he sold his works to citizens of Amsterdam with some kind of connection with Leiden, such as Maria Flaman, wife of the rich merchant Abraham Muyssart, who bought paintings by Metsu in the city by the river Amstel. However, he very quickly

started to also attract the attention of the local elite, prominent figures from trade, but also from the political field, including the wealthy ship-owner Jan Agges and the influential regent Jan Jacobsz Hinlopen. The large canvasses showing historic and religious depictions, which are so characteristic of Metsu’s years in Leiden, no long feature in his body of work after the mid 1650s. Instead, his trademark became intimate, everyday scenes on small-scale panels that were easy to handle in his modest home: street sellers, young domes-

…his virtuoso brush strokes and often amazing, loose technique... tic servants, old drinkers and smokers. These works are often difficult to date, because Metsu rarely added a year to his signature and did not ever adhere to a consistent style for very long. He often combined his own ideas with influences from other prominent genre painters. One example is 'The Old Drinker' (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), which shows a man in a dark pub, and is reminiscent of the tavern scenes painted by his contemporary Gerard ter Borch. Metsu used an accurate, fluid technique for his paintings, by doing so giving his own twist to the polished style adopted by the Leiden fine painter Gerrit Dou. 'A Baker Blowing his Horn' (private collection) is also indebted to scenes by Dou in terms of the window used, such as his 'Painter Smoking a Pipe' (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). It would be a misconception to regard Metsu merely as an epigone of his influential contemporaries, a skilful lad who derived his fame from incorporating the inventions of others into his own work. Although he did carefully study the work of Dou, Ter Borch and Vermeer, his paintings can always unmistakably be recognized as typically ‘Metsu’: with the characteristic human, elegant aura of his figures, his virtuoso brush strokes and often amazing, loose technique that gave him a certain reputation even when alive.

The Artist Himself His Self-portrait of ' The Artist Standing at a Window' (The Royal Collection, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth) shows how the young Metsu, now in his thirties, presented himself as an established artist in Amsterdam. Self-assured, cloaked in a tabard, with his painter’s stick and brushes in his left hand, he is drawing in chalk on a board with his right hand, surrounded by motifs that emphasize his status as a ‘learned’ artist: a 17th century print showing Christ on the column and a model of a classical sculpted head. Metsu painted himself on several occasions, in a different role each time: as an artist, hunter, or as a historical figure. His wife, Isabella de

12 I Rush on Amsterdam

Wolff, whom he married in 1658, also featured in some of these works. Metsu’s most notable ‘self portrait’ is 'A Hunter Getting Dressed after Bathing' (private collection), which barely has a parallel in any other Dutch painting from the Golden Age. Swimmers are usually depicted as background subjects in landscapes and very rarely on a larger scale, let alone in the image of the artist himself. In the work in question, Metsu painted himself naked, sitting at the water’s edge, putting on his undershirt. He depicted himself undeniably as a member of a higher social class, since hunting was reserved for the court, nobility and state officials in those days. However, having said this, perceptive individuals at the time will also have noticed the humorous reference to sensual lovers, which is how hunters were repeatedly depicted in the 17th century.

Painter of affection It is striking how Metsu often emphasized the relationships between the figures in his paintings. 'The Sick Child' (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), one of the most confrontational paintings from the Golden Age, plainly involves the observer in the depiction. Metsu makes us the witnesses of an intimate moment between a woman and her somewhat weakened, feverish child. The depiction, which also features a painting of the crucifixion of Christ on the wall behind the mother and child, is a reflection of the Christian Pietà. This small canvas was undoubtedly intended for a Catholic buyer. In the 1660s, a time when the plague was raging in Amsterdam – claiming more than 24,000 victims in 1663 alone – this painting, which is imbued with affection and depicts a vulnerable, pale child, who is staring intensely in the direction of the observer, would certainly have appealed to the imagination.

Spectacular drama In the final years of his life, Metsu produced a number of historical paintings and allegorical depictions – from 1666, he was able to do this from his new house at the end of Leidsestraat. The most spectacular of these is 'Christ on the Cross' (Pinacoteca Capitolina, Rome), which dates back to 1664. This painting emanates a theatrical drama that is quite untypical of Metsu, but is very much in keeping with his Amsterdam contemporaries Karel du Jardin and Adriaen van de Velde. According to the New Testament, darkness descended at around midday on Good Friday. The darkness persisted for three hours, until the time at which Jesus died. Metsu chose to depict the most dramatic moment from this Bible story, when Jesus expires and a bright, divine light breaks through the clouds and lights up the scene from above. The position and movements of the figures are full of pathos. In the foreground, Mary Magdalene is

grasping the cross with one hand, while her other hand is resting on her chest in grief. John the Evangelist has his hands folded in prayer. The Virgin Mary is raising her left arm in grief.

A virtuoso and refined From the beginning of the 1660s, Metsu produced a number of paintings using a delicate, time-consuming painting method that is reminiscent of Gerard ter Borch and Frans van Mieris. Fpr example, 'A Man Visiting a Woman Washing her Hands' (private collection). At this time, Metsu’s paintings increasingly depicted how people from the higher social circles spent their time: young men and women exchanging love letters, musical gatherings and hunters. What is striking in various works is the motif of the man who enters a room in which there are one or more women. Expensive, fashionable attire with magnificent satin and colorful red, yellow or blue jackets, opulent interiors full of valuable objects and the consideration of refined etiquette typify his paintings in a style that was not previously available in Amsterdam. An interplay with work by Johannes Vermeer, who was three years his junior, is also clearly visible in Metsu's

Winter 2010 - 2011

paintings. The spatial composition and use of light in 'The Sick Child' and the companion pieces 'Man Writing a Letter' and 'Woman Reading a Letter' show similarities between the work of Metsu and that of his famous Delft contemporary. Metsu used various elements that he evidently regarded as characteristic of the style of Vermeer: dotted highlights, light-yellow jackets and the typical use of shadow. However, he used paint in a completely different way, adopting a clean, fluid brush technique and rendering light in an abstract manner. It is not improbable that Vermeer himself was then also influenced by these aspects of Metsu’s work. At the exhibition in the Rijksmuseum, more than 35 of his best paintings are being brought together from international museums and private collections. The show includes various works that have only recently been rediscovered and that are now returning to the Netherlands for the first time in more than 250 years in some cases. This exhibition gives us the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with a talented artist who produced famous works depicting genre scenes, but also fascinating historical paintings, idiosyncratic portraits and several still lifes.

The Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) will take Place January 26 through 30. The AIFW is organized twice a year, in January and July. It is the platform for young and talented fashion designers. Deviating from the traditional runway format as seen in the leading fashion cities, the AIFW is typically Amsterdam with catwalks scattered across the city center and much attention for fringe activities, such as lectures, exhibitions and parties. Resistance Museum is 25

Amsterdam’s Resistance Museum is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Opened on November 1985 by the late Prince Bernhard and the then mayor Ed van Thijn, it was located in a former synagogue at the time. Soon this became too cramped and in 1998/1999 the museum moved to its current home, the Plancius building on Plantage Kerklaan. The museum will have record number of visitors this year: 55.000.

Eurocities Awards

The City of Amsterdam has won a EUROCITIES Award 2010. ‘The Free State of Amsterdam’ project, an Amsterdam City Planning Department initiative, beat the competition from Lyon and Leipzig in the Participation category to take home the prize. EUROCITIES is a network of more than 140 major European cities. They annually honor city governments with the EUROCITIES Awards for projects that improve life in the city. ‘The Free State of Amsterdam’ project topped the Participation category this year after the EuroLink Department of the Economic Affairs Division put for project forward for the prize. The jury was impressed by the wide range of Amsterdammers that benefitted from the project and noted that ideas stemming from the project could be put to good use in the future and could be easily applied in other cities. The Netherlands claimed a double success this year as Eindhoven was presented with the EUROCITIES Award in the Cooperation category.

FLASHBACK

1648 By Cathy Harris

In 1648 the burgomaster and magistrates of Amsterdam commissioned the famous architect Jacob van Campen to design a town hall for the city’s administrative and judicial authorities. Amsterdam at the time was the most powerful trading nation in the world and people were attracted by its power and prestige. Newcomers were flocking to the city and in the space of a century its population increased six-fold. The old Gothic Town Hall was no longer up to its task and the renowned Exchange Bank, which was housed there, was unable to cope with its growing workload. As a result, the city fathers decided to build a bigger and more impressive town hall, an edifice worthy of a metropolis of Amsterdam’s stature. Jacob van Campen’s classicist building, recalling the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, was monumental by Dutch standards of the day. Both the architecture and the decoration proclaimed the city’s supremacy and prosperity. The Antwerp sculptor Artus Quellinus and other celebrated artists were engaged to execute Van Campen’s designs in oil paint and costly stone. The most important rooms were decorated with paintings that related to their function, made by famous artists like Rembrandt van Rijn, Ferdinand Bol and Govaert Flinck. Though far from ready, the town hall opened its doors for business in 1655.

FLASHBACK

Burgerzaal Westzijde

The

delighted citizens of Amsterdam proudly referred to it as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’, and the poet Joost Vondel proclaimed it the ‘crown of creation’. He said it was built like the human body: ‘It has a midriff, arms, feet, head and shoulders…..and also internal organs. Each limb, each organ has its own function, purpose and disposition ‘. The town hall was built to serve a secular purpose, but there was more to it than that. It was homage to creation, with all its splendor alluding to a superior power.

Palace of Louis Napoleon 150 years later, in 1808, the town hall acquired a different function. Napoleon’s brother, Louis Napoleon, who had become the king of Holland two years before, decided to make the Town Hall his residence. Finding himself in an impoverished country, the twentyseven-year-old Louis was moved with compassion. To his brother’s fury, he turned a blind eye to the trade between Holland and France’s archrival England, and so obstructed Napoleon’s efforts to isolate England economically from the rest of Europe. The entire administration was moved out of the build-

ing. However, given the poor state of the country’s economy, it seemed wiser not to relocate the Exchange Bank. But, a palace with an Exchange Bank on its premises was certainly something out of the ordinary. The lavish interior and furnishings give us some idea of how the building was transformed from what was essentially an office complex into a palace in the French Empire style. A reformist at heart, Louis tried to revive the decaying city. He promptly took measures to deal with the appalling state of the drinking water supply, the silted-up harbor, the polluted canals, and the practice of burying the dead within the city. The ancient Weighing House in the center of Dam Square lacked the prestige that had saved the Exchange Bank, and, deaf to the protest of the populace, Louis insisted that it be demolished. But Napoleon’s patience soon wore thin. Louis was forced to leave the country with undignified haste, only to spend the rest of his life reminiscing about his brief spell as the king of Holland. After Paris and Rome, Amsterdam had been the third capital of the Napoleonic Empire. And for a fleeting moment in its history the Town Hall had served as the third Imperial Palace in the declining years of the

Empire. Almost the entire collection of costly furniture dating from that time was left behind. It is one of the best-preserved and most complete collections of its kind.

Palace of the House of Orange In 1813 Prince William of Orange, later King William I, returned the palace to the City of Amsterdam. But after taking the throne, he came to appreciate the benefits of having a residence in the capital, and the city agreed to grant him the use of the building once more. At present the Royal Palace is one of three palaces used by the monarch, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix. It is the venue for State Visits, the Queen’s New Year receptions and other official functions, including the annual presentation of the Erasmus Prize, the Silver Carnation, the Royal Awards for Painting and the Prince Claus Prize. When not in use by the Queen or members of the Royal House, the palace is open to the public under the auspices of the Amsterdam Royal Palace Foundation. Two exhibitions are held each year.

The Royal Palace open to the public The Royal Palace is open to the public most of the year and attracts about one hundred thousand visitors annually. It is open daily in summer, otherwise from Tuesday to Sunday. The annual summer exhibition focuses on the rich history of the building and highlights a heritage dating back to the Golden Age. In the fall, the works of up-and-coming young artists are shown in a special exhibition held in conjunction with the presentation of the Royal Awards for Painting.

Amsterdam’s Shopping Areas CITY CENTER

JORDAAN

UTRECHTSESTRAAT

DE PIJP

Two of the city’s most popular shopping streets can be found near Dam Square. Running from Central Station to the Dam, Nieuwendijk has a misleading name - it means ‘new dike’ - for it is actually the oldest dike in the city. This shopping area with numerous clothing stores, boutiques, shoe stores, souvenir shops, fast-food restaurants, etcetera, bustles with tourists. Kalverstraat runs from the other side of the square to the Munt. Named after the calf market that was held here in the 15th century, it is teeming with fashionable clothing, footwear and gift stores. The boulevard Rokin also starts at Dam Square. Just ignore the construction going on (for the North-South Line metro) and stroll along the stores with women’s wear, gorgeous shoes, art, cigars, diamonds and jewelry. The short but very busy shopping street Heiligeweg crosses Kalverstraat just before the Munt and leads to Koningsplein where you’ll find the worldfamous floating Flower Market and Leidsestraat, ending up in renowned Leidseplein.

This district (to the West of the center) may be Amsterdam’s most famous neighborhood besides the ‘Walletjes’ (Red Light District). The streets and canals extending north from Rozengracht as far as Brouwersgracht are what original Jordaaners consider to be the Jordaan proper, but the Jordaan actually extends south from Rozengracht to Elandsgracht and includes indoor market De Looier, which is the largest permanent indoor Art and Antiques Center in the country.

To the east of the city, between famous Rembrandtplein and Frederiksplein lies Utrechtsestraat, a popular shopping street rich in history. Undulating over the bridges that cross the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht canals, Utrechtsestraat is renowned for its many speciality stores and boutiques and a great variety of (international) restaurants.

The De Pijp district, roughly rectangular in shape, is located to the southeast of the city center, just beyond the girdle of canals, close to Leidseplein en Rembrandtplein. Its perimeters are demarcated by Stadhouderskade and the Amstel. It has become a very popular neighborhood, a true cultural melting pot and boasts, among others, a great variety of (ethnic) restaurants and the Albert Cuyp Market.

9 STRAATJES (THE 9 ALLEYS) This lively and picturesque neighborhood encompassing the cross streets between Singel and Prinsengracht, in the area between Raadhuisstraat and Leidsestraat, offers a great variety of shopping, restaurants and cafés. The area is also fascinating for its architecture: indeed, the 9 Straatjes is a microcosm of canalbelt architectural styles. Read

more on the 9 Alleys in our feature on the following pages.

Fall 2010

OLD WEST Not far from the Jordaan lies Old West with, among others, Kinkerstraat and the Ten Kate Market. Close to the Vondelpark, parallel to Overtoom (these days known for its great number of interior decorating shops as well as variety of restaurants) and within a stone’s throw of the city’s center is Kinkerstraat, a cozy shopping area characterized by an interesting mix of people and cultures, a great variety of shops, a busy but friendly atmosphere and the pleasant Ten Kate market which crosses Kinkerstraat.

HAARLEMMERBUURT Running from Singel (near Central Station) to Haarlemmerplein (near Marnixstraat and Westergasfabriek), the Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk together form one very long street, even though the two ‘halves’ are quite different. The area boasts a cinema (The Movies), many restaurants, cafés, coffee places and (second-hand) clothing shops. An up-and-coming neighborhood, the Haarlemmerbuurt attracts people from all over the city as well as a lot of tourists.

SPIEGELKWARTIER Spiegelkwartier, a shopping area in the eastern part of the city center, has an international reputation for fine art and antiques. Concentrated in and around Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, this district close to the Rijksmuseum boasts over 80 antique shops and galleries. An area that’s a must for lovers of art and antiques!

MUSEUMKWARTIER Hobbemastraat, Van Baerlestraat and the Byzantium plus chic P.C. Hooftstraat are part of the Museum Quarter in the south of the city and famous for its designer boutiques. Shoppers will find virtually every famous label and fashion house here, among them Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, René Lezard, Chanel, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Louis Vutton, Roberto Botticelli and Tod’s, to name just a few.

DEPARTMENT STORES/ SHOPPING CENTERS Behind the Royal Palace on the Dam is the shopping center MAGNA PLAZA. In the past this magnificent building housed the main post office, but today it is the home of numerous trendy clothing stores and unusual gift and gadget shops. Also on the Dam (Damrak) is the elegant department store DE BIJENKORF (Beehive) where shoppers will be delighted to find an extensive range of cosmetics, clothing, shoes, accessories, music, books, toys, furniture, home wares and more. At the end of Kalverstraat, near the Munttoren, is the KALVERTOREN - absolutely a shoppers’ paradise! The most striking feature of this building is the 100-foot-tall glass tower providing an extraordinary view of the city center.

APOLLOKWARTIER Beautiful villas and luxury hotels abound in the chic, elegant district known as the Apollokwartier (Apollo Quarter). Go and have a look at Cornelis Schuytstraat, and be sure to leave yourself some time for a leisurely stroll along Beethovenstraat.

Say Tasteand By Emily Cannon

It’s an ancient food whose origins predate recorded history. We don’t really know where cheese making actually originated, in Europe, Central Asia or the Middle East, but we do know that the practice had spread within Europe prior to Roman times and had become a sophisticated enterprise by the time the Roman Empire came into being.

And

when the Roman legions spread out over Europe, they wrote home about the barbarians, i.e. the inhabitants of, among others, the Low Lands, who drank a lot of milk and ate unfermented cheese. (These days, however, cheese, a product of drained curds, is usually fermented.) The Romans called cheese Caseus, and it is easy to see that our word cheese, and the name for cheese in many other languages, is derived from it: kaas (Dutch), Käse (German), queso (Spanish) and qeuijo (Portuguese). Dutch Cheese Holland is known for its windmills, clogs, tulips and… cheese. The country produces some 12.5000.000 kilograms of cheese every week, circa 8.500.000 kg of

which is exported worldwide. The remaining 4.000.000 is eaten by the Dutch themselves. Best known abroad are Gouda and Edam cheese, but the true connoisseurs among you may be familiar with Reypenaer cheese, produced by a small cheese dairy according to age-old traditional methods. It’s a family business: Jan and Rien, currently at the helm, are third generation Van den Wijngaards. In the warehouse of the Van den Wijngaard family, dating back to 1906, on the river Oude Rijn in Woerden in the green heart of Holland, the cheeses mature just as they always have. Vents ensure the air in the rooms stays fresh and once a week the cheese are cleaned by hand. They use as much milk as possible from cows fed on grass in the summertime, we are told, because cows fed Winter Summer 2010 -2009 2011

on such grass give milder and better milk. No artificial ingredients or environmental conditions are used to accelerate ripening. The historic ripening process of the Reypenaer cheeses is unique in the Netherlands. In this natural ripening (known in the trade as drying), the proportional weight loss of the cheese is significant, reason why Reypenaer cheeses tend to be flatter than similar types of cheese ripened industrially. (Factory cheese is ripened by keeping the temperature artificially low and humidity artificially high to be able to sell the cheeses as quickly as possible with the minimum loss of weight.) Along with the ripening condition, craftsmanship is equally important; it is the craftsmanship built up over decades that enables the cheese maker to best guide the ripening process towards the desired taste. Reypenaer cheese can be described as a cheese with an intense flavor, creamy, lingering in the mouth and producing exceptional aromas. Reypenaer has won many (international) prizes, for its VSOP cheese as well as its Wyngaard chèvre. At the prestigious Nantwich Cheese Show (UK) 2009 Reypenaer again won the gold medal: “Best Dutch Cheese”.

Amsterdam: Cheese Tasting Room But you don’t have to take our word for it. Go and participate in a Reypenaer cheese tasting session and enjoy! Ron Pieters, who organizes these tasting sessions, gives us a tour of the shop and the wine tasting room housed in a charming classic house on Singel canal in the picturesque heart of Amsterdam. Here, you can personally test and evaluate the flavor of the cheese under the guidance of Pieters, cheese taster par excellence. And you’ll be using the unique guillotine, designed by Wyngaard for the precise cutting of their cheeseboard size Reypenaer cheeses. Each cheese tasting sessions lasts approximately one hour and caters for a maximum of 20 people per tasting. Tasting workshops take place Sunday and Monday from 12.00-18.00 and Wednesday and Saturday from 10.00-18.00 (times may vary according to the season). You can choose between a Basic Introductory Workshop, an Advanced tasting with wine and a Connoisseur Tasting with wine and port.

World Christmas Circus Royal Theater Carré

The circus is never more beautiful than at Carré, is the familiar slogan of the World Christmas Circus, taking place from December 16 through January 2 at Europe’s most splendid circus palace on the river Amstel. To add more superlatives: this year’s program is the most awarded in over 25 years.

...it is one of the biggest and most beautiful circus festivals in the world...

Only

the very best circus acts in the world take part in this program, which certainly does its name justice. The World Christmas Circus is internationally famous but it is actually much more than just a circus; it is one of the biggest and most beautiful circus festivals in the world! This season the World Christmas Circus presents top artists with top acts who at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival (the circus’ Olympic Games, so to say) were awarded no less that twelve times. Thus, this program at Carré can rightly be called the crown on over 25 years of World Christmas Circus and a record! Never before so many prize winners of Monte Carlo and festivals in China, Russia and France were united in one program. For example, this year’s winner of the Golden Clown at the Circus Festival in Monte Carlo 2010, a Chinese troupe with the biggest ‘man-juggling’ act in the world. Super clown David Larible, the clown of all clowns, will be presenting his new acts, and there will be a big Russian swing and trapeze act from Korea. People flying up into the rafters of Carré are always – literally – the high point of this classic family program. And of course there are horses, but also parrots that fly over the heads of the

44 I Rush on Amsterdam

audience in a magically beautiful act.

Circus History So it is not an exaggeration to say that this program will occupy a prominent place in the annals of circus history. Florian Richter and his wife Edith, who in the past few years were unbelievably successful in Carré with their horse acts, won the Silver Clown in Monte Carlo way back in 2004, and in 2008 they won the highest ranking circus award in the world, the Golden Clown. David Larible, at this moment the world’s best classical clown and eight years ago the big star of Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey in the US, won the Silver Clown already in 1988 and was awarded the Oscar of the circus, the Gold Clown, in 1999. For years now, North Korea has been considered ‘world champion’ in the field of the big flying trapeze, and the World Christmas Circus has been collaborating with the National Circus of Pyongyang for 25 years. During this period, the North Korean circus won the Golden Clown of Monte Carlo no less than nine times. Their current act which they will be performing at Carré, the Russian swing and trapeze act, also won the Golden Clown, in

1998. In 2009 the Great Chinese State Circus Shandong also went home with the Golden Clown, for the most impressive and spectacular antipode act ever seen. As you can imagine, offers for this act came in from all over the world, but it can be watched exclusively at the World Christmas Circus, which has been able to engage the best acts from China every year for twenty-five years thanks to their successful cooperation and contacts. To sum up, in this program you’ll be able to see no less than four Golden Clowns. But then, the whole show is a triumph of winners! The Velez Brothers, who will be performing dangerous somersaults in their Wheel of Death for the first time at Carré, were awarded the Silver Clown at the 2005 Monte Carlo Festival, and the jongleur Picasso also won silver in that same year. The Bronze Clowns of the Monte Carlo Festival went to the remarkable snake girl from Argentina, Elayne Kramer, as well as to the air acrobats the Sorellas in 2009 and the gold acrobats Golden Power in 2004. All in all, it can safely be claimed that as far as quality is concerned, this program surpasses even that of the Fes-

Winter 2010 - 2011

tival in Monte Carlo, for it presents only the award winners of all those festivals with hundreds of competing acts. Think of the Head to Head Balance from China, awarded the Gold, and the pas de deux from Dalian, also in China. But the incredible parrots of the Italian Alessio Fochesato won prizes as well. This twenty-sixth World Christmas Circus promises to be the most beautiful circus party of all of Europe. Oscar Carré, who since a short time is honored with a splendid statue by Kees Verkade in the hall of ‘his’ theater, would be very proud. For after 123 years his building is still very much alive and kicking!

That means plenty of fish and plenty of wine at Bridges. Poirot learned the secrets of the trade many years ago, as a protégé under two-star chef Alain Dutournier at the Parisian Le Carré des Feuillants**. He subsequently transferred to Alain Ducasse’s Il Cortile*. This was followed by a position at one of the world’s leading restaurants, Le Taillevent***, headed by master chef Michel Del Burgo. This in turn was followed by Laserre**, the Le Meurice Institute*** and Spud’s restaurant in Sofitel Brussels.

Its legendary location, which formerly served as the canteen of the former Town Hall, is now a place where gourmets can savor the culinary skills of French chef Aurélien Poirot. His style can best be described as a bridge between Dutch and French culinary traditions: fresh fish from Holland, prepared with a French twist. At Bridges, guests can savor the delights of the Restaurant, the Raw Bar, the Cocktail Bar, the Vinothèque and the completely restyled courtyard garden. Sommelier Hans Tuin pours the pairing wines from his Vinothèque and the restaurant manager Jos van Hunen, ably supported by his team, ensures outstanding service for his guests. Since 2005, Pont 13 has its anchorage at the romantic post-industrial Westelijke Houthavens, characterized by a great deal of cultural development. A beautiful place to be, with a wonderful skyline – the Amsterdam harbor, interesting new architecture, and numerous boats of all kinds. The European cuisine of Pont 13 has an original character, with the Italian slow food tradition as inspirational starting-point. On an open fire organic dishes are prepared. The combination of the décor of the rebuilt ferry, the impressive view, and last but not at all least the slow food kitchen makes this a place where you just love to be. Distinctive are the relaxed, homely atmosphere and the delicious food. In addition, Pont 13 supports cultural initiatives such as music performances.

The World’s largesT Swan Lake It is fairy-tale time at the RAI Theater this Christmas season. The world-famous Russian Tchaikovsky Perm ballet (together with the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky Kirov Ballet considered one of the three top ballet companies of the country) presents the captivating classic SWAN LAKE. And not just any Swan Lake: it’s the world’s largest ever with no less than forty-eight swans!

The ballet is accompanied live by the company’s own Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. The Messiah is divided into

three segments: the announcement and birth of Christ, his suffering and ascension, the promise of salvation and what this means for the believers. Until his death in 1759, Handel conducted the Messiah fifty-six times, often adapting the score to specific circumstances, such as the availability of certain soloists and of specific instruments. It is Handel’s most popular work. A few decades after its conception and the rise of choral societies, the Messiah developed into a British cultural icon par excellence.

museums RemBRANDT HOuse museum December 3 through February 13 THe LAsT CARAvAggiO This is a world premiere: on exhibit will be an almost unknown painting by the Italian artist Caravaggio; St John the Baptist Reclining comes from a foreign private collection and has increasingly been accepted as an authentic Caravaggio by experts since its discovery in 1976. They also consider this painting to be the very last work by the renowned Italian master and date it to 1610. Winter 2010 - 2011

This work of art will be shown to the public for the first time exactly four hundred years after it was painted. The painting will be exhibited in an iconic space: Rembrandt’s studio. Rembrandt is often described as Caravaggio’s true artistic heir. The artists’ powerful depictions of strong emotions, dramatic lighting and astonishing realism set them apart as the two great geniuses of Baroque painting. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) In 1592 Caravaggio established himself in Rome, then the center of the arts. His exceptional talent did not go unrecognized and important commissions followed. His dramatic, extremely

realistic manner was admired by art-lovers and fellow-artists, but appealed less to the lower ranks of the clergy and the ordinary people, who felt that his work was vulgar and irreverent. Around 1600 Caravaggio achieved great fame by producing spectacular paintings for churches in Rome. Cardinals and royalty paid huge sums to acquire his works for their collections. Artists in Rome were influenced by Caravaggio’s innovations, adopted elements from his work and disseminated them throughout Europe. Caravaggio cannot be said to have led an exemplary life. After fatally wounding a rival in May 1606, he narrowly eluded the papal guards. His wanderings

took him to Naples, Malta, Sicily and back to Naples, all the while hoping for a pardon and a speedy return to Rome. On July 18, 1610, shortly before that saving pardon reached him, the thirty-eight year-old painter died in Porto Ercole, less than a hundred kilometers to the north of Rome. His grave was only discovered in June of this year. Anders Zorn (Sweden), and Thomas Anshutz (United States). In the last quarter of the 19th century, Naturalism was one of the dominant movements in painting. This photographic style transcended national borders, and fanned out throughout all of Europe and the United States. The central themes within Naturalism include labor (in the country, in cities, and in industry), religion, and youth. The painters often used simple peasants as their subject material, or the hard life of workers in the cities. The style of painting was particularly detailed, and the works have the appearance of snapshots of real life.

In his letters to his brother Theo, he often mentioned the themes that they used, and the way they worked. Van Gogh also collected illustrations of these masters’ paintings. THE RED SHOES The famous director Martin Scorsese was the driving force behind the digital restoration of The Red Shoes (Michael Powell, Great Britain 1948), a flamboyant recreation in Technicolor of the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen of the same title. Powell situated the story about the ballerina Victoria Page (Moira Shearer), who has to choose between ballet and love, in the milieu of Sergej Diaghilev’s famous Ballets Russes. Beautiful camera work by Jack Cardiff. At EYE Film Institute and Dutch cinemas from December 9.

LE QUATTRO VOLTE A stylistic, refined and poetic portrait of country life in southern Italy, at the Cannes Festival 2010

Winter 2010 - 2011

Le quattro volte proved to be a favorite with press and public, and won the Europe Cinema Label prize. The film will be shown at EYE and in Dutch cinemas from December 23.

THE AFRICAN QUEEN This is a restored version of the classic from 1951, directed by John Huston and starring Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. It presents a superb combination of souse Bogart (who won an Oscar) and spinster Hepburn traveling downriver in Africa during WWI, combating the elements and the Germans, and each other. Script by James Agee and director Huston from C.S. Forrester’s novel, gorgeously filmed on location in the then Belgian Congo by Jack Cardiff. Showing from January 27.

POETRY Guilt and penance, suffering and loss, victims and culprits: Lee Chang-dong created ‘Oasis’ and ‘Secret Sunshine’ around the same themes as ‘Poetry’. This third intimate masterpiece by the Korean director, deservedly awarded best script in Cannes, is the moving story of Mija who, while suffering from dementia and having problems remembering even simple words, enlists in a poetry course. A serenely filmed and subtly acted portrait of a remarkable woman, in which the verbs ‘forget’ and ‘forgive’ are analyzed to the bone. With Yoon Jeong Hee, Ahn Nae-sang and Kim Hira. From February 10.

AIrPOrt LIbrAry

Since late August Schiphol boasts a permanent library. And even though their claim that they are the world’s first airport to have a library is not entirely true – Nashville, Tennessee, US, was the first, way back in 1962! – what they are presenting here can certainly be called unique in the world. Travelers who are transferring or who simply have a little spare time, can read books here in 29 languages, listen to music and watch movies. There are translations of books by Dutch authors as well as books on Dutch architecture, visual art and photography. Borrowing books is not possible – they are an airport, after all! – but you can read as long and as much as you like. The library is obviously meant as a cultural visiting card of Holland, and for those who wish to get a taste of Dutch culture in a short time, this is an ideal spot. Travelers can watch short films on Dutch national heritage, from the Delta Works and Dutch Design to Anne Frank and the Amsterdam canal belt. One can also browse through photo books on the Netherlands and download music by Dutch artists. The Airport Library is located behind passport control on Holland Boulevard, the connecting corridor between the E and the F gate, and is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

rIjkSMuSEuM AMStErdAM SCHIPHOL

On Holland Boulevard, there is also an auxiliary branch of the Rijksmuseum. So, before or after your chocolate and/or Bols genever, go and look at some magnificent paintings. This winter, until March 21, there is an exhibition of Dutch winter landscapes: DUTCH WINTERS. The changing of the seasons is one of the oldest themes in Western European art, with the winter undergoing nature’s most spectacular metamorphosis. Several works from the Rijksmuseum collection present an exceedingly varied and sublime picture of winter. The 17th century ice scenes by Hendrick Avercamp from the Rijksmuseum collection are considered to be among the most famous examples of winter landscapes. Undoubtedly, the Enjoying the Ice on exhibition at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol is an icon of its genre. Winter landscape by Barend Koekoek represents the romantic period of the 19th century. The winter scene of Two Girls in the Snow by Isaac Israels and, serves as the perfect finale for the winter landscape genre. From the intervening period, we encounter works by great masters such as Jacob van Ruisdael. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol, Holland Boulevard, in the area beyond passport control between Piers E and F. The museum is open daily from 07.00 until 20.00, and access is free of charge. It houses a permanent exhibition of ten works from the Rijksmuseum collection by Dutch masters from the Golden Age and a temporary exhibition is also displayed three times a year. There is also a Rijksmuseum Shop.
